Bakes by Rose is a traditional home-based bakery in Thetford which was established in July 2020. Opened by local resident Hannah Higgins, who decided to follow her baking dream and start her own baking business. Bakes by Rose offers a range of traditional baked goods such as cakes, brownies, bread pudding, chocolate oats and scones but also offers delicious afternoon tea boxes and celebration cakes too!
Speaking about her love of baking Hannah said, “From a young age, I have dreamt of owning my own little traditional bakery shop, I vividly remember the old traditional bakery in the town centre next to where Savers is now, and I’ve always dreamt of having something similar which I can call my own. Creating Bakes by Rose was the first step, and I can’t believe how popular it has been this far, maybe one day you’ll find me in a shop in the town centre offering an array of traditional, home baked treats but for now I hope that people will continue to support my little business and help it grow.”

This month the Friends of Ancient House Museum are taking their popular talks programme online via Zoom. The programme will kick off on 13th April at 7pm with Dan Morgan, Secretary of the Friends, talking about Victorian Toy Theatres. This will be free to attend for Friends (or those who are Norfolk Museum Pass Holders). If you are not already a member the ticket price is £7.50. Or you can join the Friends of Ancient House Museum up to December 2021 for £7.50.
Dan Morgan said “Today the idea of a toy theatre with paper actors and scenery seems inextricably linked with Benjamin Pollock, and in London today it’s possible to find both a shop and a museum bearing his name. In this talk we will explore the rich and colourful history of an ephemeral toy that began in Regency London, became a staple of Victorian childhood, was blown up in the Blitz, but even today has a small but dedicated following.” Oliver Bone, Curator of Ancient House Museum said: “We are excited to see the Friends talks programme joining the digital age and a great bonus for our loyal Friends during Covid. Remember your 2020 membership card is valid until December 2021. Ancient House Friends give us wonderful support and members are entitled to an array of benefits, such as a 10% discount at Norfolk Museums Service shops and free entry to Ancient House throughout the year (when we are able to reopen!)”. Tickets for all Ancient House Museum and Norfolk Museums Service events can be found online at Art Tickets. Prior to our Victorian Toy Theatre event you can join us for our Ask The Expert session on 8th April and meet Dayna, the Assistant Curator at Lynn Museum. Find out about Dayna’s job and one of the strange behind the scenes tasks!

The area surrounding St Peter’s Church and the Burrell Works has changed dramatically over the past 96 years. Thetford Inner Relief Road was built in the late 1960s; the Burrell buildings on the bottom left have given way to retail units and a car park, although the paint shop remains as the Charles Burrell Museum.
