Much-loved Thetford local hub reaches out to community for help Meet Up, the community hub run by The Benjamin Foundation, on Redcastle Furze Estate, is asking for help from the local community to ensure that it can continue working to support people of all ages in Thetford for years to come. But the community centre’s building is in a declining state, with the repair bill for the roof alone estimated at £30,000. Mike Towndrow, manager of Meet Up, said: “Meet Up means so much to such a diverse range of people within our community. It is a social lifeline as well as a professional resource for many. We help people to raise their aspirations and believe in themselves, which in turn benefits the wider community.” For more information and to donate to Meet Up, contact mike.towndrow@benjaminfoundation.co.uk Telephone: 01842 820871. Thetford Society The March meeting of the Thetford Society welcomed Andrew Hamilton, a local osteopath. He outlined the history of osteopathy from its beginnings in Missouri in 1894 to its introduction into the UK in 1917. With the help of his friendly skeleton, he explained the structure of the back and the potential for damage with increasing age. He recommended techniques for avoiding problems and the importance of posture and flexibility. The next meeting is on April 5th at 7.30pm at the URC when the speaker will be local Town Crier Mike Wabe whose subject will be Witches and Witchcraft in East Anglia. New members are always welcome.

Business is booming at British Heart Foundation By About Thetford Editor, Terry Jermy

Speak to anyone that I know and they will tell you that I do love a bargain. Given that I also like to help a good cause it is perhaps no surprise that I don’t mind having a good rummage in a charity shop. I was therefore delighted when I received a phone call from the new Manager of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) store in Thetford asking if I wanted to meet and find out a bit more about how it all works.

Picture: Manager of British Heart Foundation - Eric, ready to greet customers with a colleague

Having purchased items myself from BHF, I had a rough idea what to expect but I was still surprised. Eric, the new manager (pictured) explained that in fact, Thetford is one of the top performing stores for BHF. Because of this, they are in desperate need of more donations. This surprised me. You would think that in todays ‘throw away’ society they would have an abundance of items - but this is obviously not the case. He said no sooner do they get items in then they go again. During my visit a van load of items arrived and started to be offloaded, by the time I left some of the items were off out of the store again having been purchased by a now content customer. There’s a total of six staff employed at the Thetford store, two full-time positions and four part-time positions and they’re supported by between 10 and 15 volunteers. The store is open seven days a week, which clearly wouldn’t be possible without the support of those volunteers. Whilst visiting I spoke to some of the volunteers and asked why they volunteered. Several were ‘between jobs’ and wanted to keep busy whilst others wanted to improve their CV’s and learn new skills. Some people have been known to volunteer specifically because they are suffering with a heart condition, or know someone that has and they want to ‘give something back’. Volunteers with BHF have a

range of tasks to complete including customer service, sales floor support and merchandising, warehouse support - loading and unloading and stock control. All stock on the shop floor is checked after two weeks and if necessary reduced in price. Items generally turn around very quickly but if not, they have the ability to rotate stock around different stores thanks to their dedicated van and driver for the six stores in the area which includes Norwich and Cambridge. One thing that particularly surprised me was learning about Gift Aid. Coming from a charity work background I was already kind of aware of this, i.e. if you’re a UK tax payer and donate say £100 to a charity they can reclaim Gift Aid on that donation of 25%. What I didnt realise is the same applies for donated furniture and other goods. So if you donate an item valued at say £100 - it is treated the same as cash and that item is already worth 25% more to BHF - a great incentive to donate items. The Thetford British Heart Foundation store is located on Minstergate next to Iceland. It is open Monday to Saturday from 9.30am - 5pm and 10am - 4pm on Sundays. If you want to donate an item this can be collected free of charge - contact 01842 422100 or visit the website: www.bhf.org.uk

The Jack Pilling Art Gallery

The Open Art Exhibition proved very successful with some excellent entries. It was judged on Wednesday 9th March by three judges; Margaret Rutter, Kevin Donaldson and David Harrison. The high quality of entries made it very hard for them to make a decision but the final result was reached with a lot of deliberation. Results: 1st. Brett Straight - ‘Despair’. 2nd. John Hayes - The Woodsman and 3rd was Kath Mason - The Lovers. The overall winner was Brett Straight whose name will be on the Bob Jest Shield. The judges also gave 3 Highly Commended to Gabrielle Whitcombe for ‘On the Beach’, Colin Kirkwood for ‘Marilyn Monroe’ and Val Ablewhite for ‘Guilty as Charged’. The Awards evening took place in the Large Court, Guildhall on Wednesday 16th March where the winners were presented with their cheques and diplomas by Lord Fisher. I have to thank our Mayor Councillor Robert Kybird and the Mayoress for also attending the event. May I take this opportunity to thank all the artists for their participation, in my eyes they were all winners. Our thanks also go the Miranda McCall from St. Nicholas Hospice Care who supports us greatly in all we try to achieve. Our photographer Liz McClaglen did a grand job as did our helpers Dolly and Don. Thank you all once again. Pam Goveia, Administrator.

Update from Charles Burrell Centre Manager, Mark Snowdon A busy start to 2016 continues at Charles Burrell Centre as we welcome a handful of innovative new businesses. Hats Don’t Sell, a brand new men’s clothing retailer is now open after transforming a science block storage room and we’ve also welcomed Melhado Furnishings, a family business that specialise in restoring and upcycling furniture. Two tenants that add even greater strength to our diverse range of community assets. Further developments are also taking place across the site with Hazel Dixon Nails launching a brand new training academy which will offer courses in nail art and various treatments. We are also pleased to welcome Thetford MMA and Fitness Studio as they make the short journey across Staniforth Road as their current building is set to be demolished in the coming months. As our first year of being financially independent comes to a close I would like to thank our staff, board members and volunteers for their relentless efforts to ensure the centre has remained sustainable and of course the tenants and local community for their continued support. West Thetford Community Fly-tipping Project Report by Barbara Bysouth

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to report fly - tipping this month either via the Breckland website at www.breckland.gov.uk/flytip or via Flagship Response on 0808 1684555. This really helps towards areas being cleared as quickly as possible. There has been many postings on social media recently about people fly-tipping in certain areas because they know that Serco will be around to pick it up anyway. This is still fly-tipping and if caught, it will be investigated and you may be fined. There has been a big increase in the amount of larger items being fly-tipped on the Abbey Estate in the last month and on an estate walkabout last Thursday, we observed two full trucks of rubbish being removed. I have also seen many posts on social media concerning what can and can’t be taken to the Recycling Centre. Please take a look at the website: www.norfolk.gov.uk/Environment You will find details of amounts you can take as well as opening times etc. Failing that, I have a stock of leaflets containing all the information you might require before you head for the re-cycling centre. Please email me if you would like a copy. My email address is:

The Barnham Cross Family Litter Pick on 13th March was attended by 33 adults and 14 children and we cleared 35 bags of litter in an hour - see picture above. It was such a success that it will become a regular activity. Residents and Councillors representing the Redcastle Estate have now also joined together to form the ‘Redcastle Rangers’. They will be meeting on a monthly basis to undertake a litter pick and walkabout of the areas to collect small items of rubbish and report any other issues to the relevant authorities. There is also a weekly litter pick taking place on the Abbey Estate. For more information and to get involved, you can contact Barbara on 07835 316370.

News from Thetford Probus Visit is insight into food Thetford Probus Club members had a glimpse of the future of what we eat when they visited the Institute of Food Research in Norwich. After a general introduction to the Institute’s role and work by Head of Corporate Affairs Laura Knight, Dr Paul Kroon, one of the institute’s research leaders delivered a talk amusingly titled ‘Can eating chocolate really be good for my health?’ It quickly became apparent that it posed a vital question that underpinned much of his and the institute’s work involving a myriad of foods and beverages that are part of our everyday diet.Dr Kroon’s insight into the ground-breaking research being done into many aspects of food and particularly in identifying healthy foods and what makes some more nutritious and health-promoting than others provoked an animated dialogue of questions and discussion and no one was left in any doubt about the importance of the research.

Picture: From left to right. Probus Chairman Mike Brindle, IFRs Dr Paul Kroon and Club Vice Chair Gerald Goucher

The visit was rounded off with an opportunity to see the Biorefinery Centre and hear from Research Scientist David Wilson how different components in foods and crops are identified and precisely measured using a process of high pressure and temperatures. The visit replaced the Club’s usual monthly meeting at Hanbury Court and it is hoped that there will be more visits to other places of interest in the future. Deadline for inclusion in the May edition: 20th April 2016

One interesting local connection came to light during Dr Kroon’s talk, when he revealed that he knew Thetford well as his father, who was originally from the Netherlands, has lived in the town for many years. The IFR forms one part of a world-leading cluster of research expertise based on the Norwich Research Park with the Institute working closely alongside its neighbours – the University of East Anglia and Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital. Soon this will become even more integrated when the multi-million pound Quadram Institute, currently under construction, opens to become the Institute’s new home.

Ice Age Brecks Day School Saturday 23rd April 2016 The Brecks is a surprisingly large area in the heart of East Anglia with a unique landscape characterised by heathlands, sandy soils, pine lines and forest plantations. Not only does this make the area look and feel different to other parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, it has meant that the way humans have lived and worked in the landscape throughout history has been very different. But have you ever wondered how the rocks, rivers, hills, sands and soils of the Brecks developed? The Breaking New Ground 'Ice Age Brecks' day school is an opportunity to find out about the evolution of this distinctive landscape in Norfolk and Suffolk, over 10,000 years ago. It is also an opportunity to discover the story of changing plant and animal species and earliest human settlement. From verdant forests to chilly tundra, from hippopotami to woolly mammoths, the Brecks area has seen great changes in its landscape and wildlife over the last 500,000 years. This FREE day school will focus on the contribution that successive warm and cold periods have made to life and landscape in the area. You will be introduced to the evidence for environmental change, not forgetting to weave in the story of earliest human occupation.

The day is open to anyone interested in the subject. You will need to bring suitable outdoor clothing and a packed lunch with you. You can book you free ticket for the event on Saturday April 23rd at http://tinyurl. com/IceAgeBrecks2 or by contacting the Breaking New Ground Team directly on 01842 815465. Starting at 9:30am at The Carnegie Room in Thetford and ending at 5.00pm. For more information on this project or to discover the many other exciting opportunities to find out more about the Brecks or how to get involved, visit: www.breakingnewground.org.uk

The day school is the second in a series of three on this subject being delivered as part of the Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership scheme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. It will include specialist presentations in the morning by geologists Dr Peter Allen and Tim Holt-Wilson form the Norfolk Geodiversity Partnership. This will be followed by a fascinating field trip into the Brecks (by coach and on foot) to discover first-hand some key sites; assisted by the renowned flint-knapping specialist John Lord. This event will open up a new dimension of understanding for you, and so contribute to a greater appreciation of the role that the physical landscape - sediments, soils, landforms and water - makes to the biodiversity and history of this fascinating natural area. BNG Project Manager Nick Dickson said “Conservation often focusses on the visible landscape, and these fascinating workshops demonstrate that everything we see in the landscape occur as a direct result of what’s going on underground. This is a perfect opportunity to get to the roots of why the Brecks is so different and so special”.

Wild Walk in Thetford with the RSPB Why not join us on our next monthly wildlife walk starting at the Captain Mainwaring statue on Bridge Street in Thetford on Sunday 10th April at 11am? The walk lasts about 90 minutes but recently our walkers have wanted to go on a bit longer; it’s down to you! We’ll be walking along the river, looking for birds and other wildlife. Everyone is welcome, from expert to beginner and the walks are aimed at adults and families with budding young naturalists. Wear stout footwear, wrap up for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them. These wildlife walks are free but donations are welcome! There is no need to book but for more information, contact 01842 753732 or email us: thebrecks@rspb.org.uk There is always something to see and on our March walk we spent some time listening to birdsong. It’s a great opportunity to learn about bird songs and calls... don’t worry if you don’t know any; we can start with the basics! March songsters included finches, wren, robin, blackbird, song thrush, grey wagtail and chiffchaff (one of the first returning spring migrants). We were able to spend some time on the identification of the tit family including marsh tit and also had excellent views of kingfishers and green woodpeckers. Three species of raptor (kestrel, buzzard and sparrowhawk) put in appearances again and as we’d headed up to Nunnery Lakes we were able to identify several types of waterbirds such as Egyptian and Canada geese, tufted duck, little egret, oystercatcher, curlew and magnificent great crested grebes. We look forward to seeing you there to help us add to our tally!

Thetford Open Gardens 2016

This is the 10th year of open gardens in Thetford and we have been joined over those years by gardens in Croxton and Kilverstone. We have always given the proceeds to St Nicholas Hospice Care starting with around £2,000 in 2007 and over £7,000 in 2015. This year it would be amazing if we could raise £10,000 to celebrate 10 wonderful years of gardens in the Thetford area and the hospitality provided by our gardeners, who make it such an enjoyable day for all the visitors both local and from far away. So please, if you would like to join us by opening YOUR garden for this special anniversary year, do contact us on 01842 753590, 01842 765753, or 01842 762165, via our Open Gardens Facebook page, Twitter @ThetOpenGardens or by emailing: rwiad@talktalk.net

Wretham Welcomes Visitors Only a few miles out of Thetford, the village of Wretham opens up at the start of May as local people work together to welcome visitors. At Wretham Lodge (IP24 1RL), the former village rectory, the National Gardens Scheme gardens will be open to the public on Sunday and Monday May 1st and 2nd, from 11am to 5pm on both days. The current owners have lavished years of design and practical work in the site, with its sweeping lawns, tree planting, herbaceous borders and walled garden, all of them on view. The May opening comes because the traditional opening time at Easter was too early this year.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club GARDENING NOTES - APRIL April is such a busy month in the garden and on the allotment. Potatoes should be going in. The difference between earlies and maincrop varieties is mainly in the length of time they take to produce a crop so they can all be planted at about the same time. Although a frost can take the tops off completely, potatoes will survive and shoot again. The practice of earthing-up protects the new shoots and also ensures that there is a good covering of soil to stop the new crop of potatoes turning green. It also kills off weeds – well worth the effort! If you have the time when sowing vegetable seeds here is a tip for limiting the weeds that are in the soil already. Prepare the area so that it ends up smooth and raked, ready to go. Leave it for a week and then hoe the area clear of the hundreds of newly sprouting weeds. Now the top layer is clear of wind-borne weed seeds and your vegetables can get going before the next set of weed seeds takes over. Hoeing is the absolute essential for keeping your vegetables clear of weeds and in addition it roughens up the surface of the soil so that rain can sink in more easily. A push-pull hoe is a good choice here as you can walk backwards and remove your footprints as you go. Sometimes you need to sow seed on a windy day and there is a risk of them blowing away. It helps if you pour water into your furrow so that the seeds stick to the damp soil. Of course, you must also crouch down to bring your hand as close to the soil as possible and release a few seeds at a time through your pinched fingers. You can buy seeds on tape so that they are correctly and evenly spaced and will not fly away. They are rather more expensive of course. This is the month to divide herbaceous perennials (eg Michaelmas daisies) A labour saving method is to plunge two forks in back to back and prise the plant up and apart; this tears the plant into sections without slicing into the growing shoots or chopping the roots which can happen with a spade. If you have border plants which grow tall you can usefully put in supports, either elegant iron work from the nursery or humble bamboo and string.

Trying to lift and support blooms which have fallen over and grown at a strange angle is not an easy job later in the season. This is a good time to add general fertiliser to the ground, both for perennials and bulbs. Bulbs like daffodils need to be fed to make a bloom for next year, which is also the reason to remove the seed pod but not the stem or leaves – the green upper growth is essential to feed the new bulb. And if you didn’t get your roses pruned last month, do it at once – they will be rocketing away with the longer days and milder temperatures. Camellias are looking wonderful at this time of year. There are two problems with growing them in our area. One is that they need an acid soil so put in lots of leaf mould or compost and add sequestrated iron if the leaves start to yellow. The other is the frost. These are plants that thrive in the shelter of woodland in the wild so the answer is to plant them where they will not get scorched by the early morning sun and ideally against a house wall where they can borrow some warmth. Have a cup of tea while you enjoy the blooms and you will be drinking Camellia sinensis a related species. Of course, you could keep the plant in a tub in the porch – but do read the label before purchasing a plant; their hardiness varies considerably. Our meeting this month is on Thursday 28th April at 7.30 in the URC; the speaker is Don Andrews who will talk about Growing and Showing Dahlias. In addition the Spring show will be on Saturday 16th April. This year we are at the Methodist Hall in Tanner Street so hope lots of shoppers will drop in to see the colour and elegance of the blooms from 1.30 till 3pm. As well as the main flower classes there will be vegetable classes (including forced rhubarb), a culinary section (including simnel cakes) and a seasonal table (including Easter bonnets). Entry to the show is free so do come along. Sue Pilgrim

Help Put Local Wildlife on the Map Would you be interested in learning more about wildflowers or how to record different wildlife habitats? Could you spare a day or two during the spring and summer of 2016 to help Norfolk Wildlife Trust with an exciting new wildlife project? This spring NWT launched a new project funded by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund called Norfolk County Wildlife Action, which aims to encourage people to record the wildlife they see in churchyards and on County Wildlife Sites. This summer we will be carrying out wildflower surveys and creating a habitat map for four County Wildlife Sites in Thetford. We are looking for a small group of people from the local area to help us carry out these surveys by becoming Community Wildlife Surveyors.

Surveying underway. Picture by Matthew Roberts.

News from Thetford Voices Thetford’s young singers can look back on an enjoyable programme of singing in the last few months, with their annual Christmas Carolling event at its heart. Over 70 children and leaders took part this year, singing at Hanbury Court, King’s Court and for Laburnum Grove and Alexander Court and, to our great pleasure, filling St Peter's for an inspiring closing concert. Individual ensembles augmented the enthusiastic carol singing and ending with Cynthia Gray’s ‘Let us sing with glee’ and a full choral version of ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’. We were delighted the day raised £267 for EACH. One featured ensemble in that concert was Quire of Voices, singers aged 10 to 18 chosen from regular members of the open workshops run by Thetford Voices to take on more challenging singing in parts. They performed with distinction as guests of Thetford Singers at their Christmas Concert and of the congregation of Bridgham Church at a less formal festive entertainment. Then in the new year they found another gear to join the Chapel Choir of Magdalene College, Cambridge in a workshop with Polina Sosnina, Magdalene’s Senior Organ Scholar and a regular Voices’ conductor and accompanist. .

Picture: Polina Sosnia conducts carollers at Laburnham Grove

Thetford Voices aims to be 'a singing programme for today and tomorrow'. So looking ahead, Quire of Voices will be singing in the concert arranged for Saturday 25 June to usher in this year’s Open Gardens event while preparations are in hand for our fifth music theatre tour of local primary schools, with ‘Young Wizard’, a show based on Ursula Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea. Finally, the summer session of Open Singing Workshops, themed this year as ‘Fun(fun, fun) and (the)Games’ will take place on Tuesday August 2nd and Wednesday August 3rd, with full details and the opportunity to register in May. For information, please email: thetfordvoices@gmail.com

More recently Thetford Voices has turned to another strand of its programme, working directly with schools. March 14 saw a return visit from Early Years and Key Stage 1 specialist, London singer-songwriter Steve Grocott. Thoroughly enjoyable song sessions with pupils from Bishops Primary School and Queensway and Raleigh Infant Schools were complemented by an evening INSET session for two dozen teachers. The title of Steve’s series of song booklets - Bright Sparks gives a clue to the character and success of his Striking Sparks Tour.

Which is best Venus Freeze or CACI?

Halcyon Days

I have a lot of clients asking me what is a ‘Venus freeze’ and can they benefit from having a treatment, or is a CACI better?

Skin Care & Laser clinic

Too busy?

The answer is they are both very different types of treatments working with completely different methods. Both are designed to achieve great results. But as with all things some clients prefer one to the other.

IPL Hair Removal

IPL Skin Rejuvenation Permanent make up

CACI (which stands for computer aided cosmetology instrument) works by using micro currents and re-educates the muscles to stay in a fixed place, we are fighting gravity! It will reduce the appearance of fine lines and enchance tissue repair. It’s mainly used on the face but can also be used on the body. Treatments take 75mins and the client needs a minimum of 2-3 weekly sessions with a total of 8-12. This treatment is very safe and comfortable and relaxing, it was first designed for use on Bell’s Palsy and stroke patients.

Most clients receive 6-8 treatments per area with each session lasting only 30 -45 mins approx. Reduction in fine lines, increased elasticity and the skin will appear tighter. The long term effects will be cellulite reduction, inch loss and overall improvement of the appearance of the skin. The treatment is very safe, radio frequency and magnetic pulse have been used in medicine for many years and are proven safe and effective technologies. The treatment is very comfortable, relaxing warm and pain free. There is absolutely no down time, and it produces long term results. They are both beneficial treatments and lots of my clients will have a blend of the two for their maintenance appointment to get maximum results.

Beauty Geek Column by Caroline King Beauty Balm Creams What are beauty balms? Also known as BB or “beauty balm” or “blemish balm”. They were invented in Germany in the 1960s to help clients protect their skin after getting laser treatments. Yes they really have been around that long! What do they do? BB creams ideally are supposed to incorporate primers, moisturizers, serums, SPF, and foundation into one product. However, it’s important to know that BB creams don’t tackle every skin issue. If you are looking for a specific product to tackle your skin needs such as a spot cream to fight acne. This will not have acne active ingredients in it.

How do I apply it? You can apply your BB cream in numerous ways, as you would your foundation. Apply after you have moisturised with your regular cream and allow that to dry as you would normally. You can use your fingers, a sponge or brush. I generally apply mine using my fingers and dot over my face, then blend in. You can also re-apply and layer it depending on the amount of coverage you are looking for. BB creams v tinted moisturisers: There is a common myth that BB creams are just tinted moisturizers, but that’s not true. BB creams should provide a heavier coverage than the sheerness of tinted moisturizers. True BB creams should contain priming and moisturizing ingredients, vitamin A, C, or E, SPF, anti-aging ingredients. Select one suitable for your specific skin type.

Breckland Cats Protection

Elles Beaus & Belles

Now that Spring is on its way, its time to think about protecting your cat from fleas and other parasites.

Dog Grooming Room

Fleas are the most common skin parasite. Adult fleas live permanently on their animal host and the female flea produces eggs at a rate of 50 a day. The eggs fall off the cat and hatch into larvae in 2 to 16 days. They then change into immobile pupae in a cocoon. An adult develops in the cocoon and awaits signals suggesting the presence of a cat, such as heat, carbon dioxide and vibrations. The flea will emerge and attach to the host in seconds. If no host is present, the flea can wait in the cocoon for up to 2 years. In the right conditions the whole cycle can be completed quickly. Centrally heated homes with fitted carpets provide ideal conditions warm and humid - for fleas to develop all year round. An itchy cat or insect bites on human ankles maybe the only signs of infestation. Unless cats are allergic to flea bites, they often show remarkably little response. Fleas move around at great speed making them difficult to spot. The best way to check is to place the cat on a sheet of white paper and comb it meticulously. A fine-toothed flea comb may trap one or two fleas, but black specks of ‘flea dirt’ - flea droppings consisting of undigested cat blood - can usually be found on the paper. When placed on damp cotton wool ‘flea dirt’ slowly dissolves producing bloody streaks. Flea dirt or white eggs may also be found where the cat sleeps. For effective control, adult fleas on the cat must be killed and re-infestation from the environment prevented. Products intended for dogs should not be used on cats, as they can be toxic. The new, safe and most effective flea control products are available from veterinary surgeries where advice on their use is provided. Some flea control treatments also kill ticks, and internal parasites such as roundworm and tapeworm. And also ear mites and biting lice. Check with your vet - if you live near the forest you may need a product that kills ticks as well. You need to treat all the animals in your household with appropriate flea treatment for their species.

If your cat goes outside, it is inevitable that he will pick up fleas. It is therefore your responsibility to protect him and your home from a flea infestation. Most flea treatments need to be administered regularly - every 4 6 weeks. Fleas can become resistant to flea treatment, so check with your vet that you have the latest treatment that is effective. For help or advice, or assistance with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. Rita Thompson

You may also need to treat carpets and furnishings and a spray is available from your vet. Frequent vacuuming can help to reduce the numbers of fleas, but it will not eliminate them. These products are specifically for the environment and should never be used on the cat itself.

“I’ve just received a £2,000 gas and electricity bill for payments going back two years. I’m not sure if I owe this money - what should I do?” The first thing you should do is work out whether your energy supplier has made a mistake as they may have the wrong meter reading, or your meter may not be working properly. They may even have sent you someone else’s bill. Take a meter reading then call your supplier to discuss your bill. If your supplier hasn’t sent you an accurate bill for more than a year, they shouldn’t ask you to pay for more than 12 months’ usage. This is the ‘back-billing’ principle, which applies to all suppliers If you think your supplier is at fault but they are still trying to charge you for energy used more than 12 months ago, make a complaint. They should look into your case and provide an explanation. You may find that your supplier has billed you for the right amount and they are not at fault, particularly if you haven’t provided regular or accurate meter readings. In this case you will probably have to pay some or all of the money. If

Landlord - Gatekeepers for Immigration?

08/03/2016

To ascertain a tenant’s immigration status, Landlords are obliged to see original documentation that proves their right to remain in the UK. Copies of these documents must be retained by the Landlord for a minimum of twelve months after the tenancy has come to an end or the occupier has left. The type of documentation that proves an individual’s right to remain in the UK includes a UK passport, EEA Identity card and a Residence card. A full list can be found at www.gov.uk. If a tenant asserts they are entitled to remain in the UK but for some reason the documentation is not available, an online check of a person’s status can be made via the Home Office website. In the event that a person only has a temporary right to remain in the UK, Landlords must diarise the expiry date and carry out further checks to ensure the tenant’s right to remain in the UK has not lapsed. If a tenant stays in occupation after their right to remain in the UK has lapsed, Landlords are legally obliged to 10:55 report the individual to the Home Office. Given that Landlords also need to comply with discrimination laws under the Equality Act 2010, it is advisable that all applicants are taken through the same tenant verification and selection process.

A

s part of the clampdown against illegal immigration, private Landlords throughout England now have to conduct “right to rent” checks against their tenants. Landlords who fail to do so can be fined up to £3,000 per tenant and Landlords who persistently fail to conduct right to rent checks can be prosecuted under the criminal law. The changes were introduced courtesy of the Immigration Act 2014 and took effect from 1st February 2016. Under the legislation, only people with the right to stay in the UK are permitted to rent. Whilst it is not currently necessary to check existing occupiers, Landlords (or their agents if the responsibility has been passed to them) do need to check new tenants and lodgers over the age of 18 years. Checks have

Whilst it is too early to assess the impact of the legislation, it is clear that private Landlords are facing an increasing legislative burden and the uninformed amongst them could be taught a very expensive lesson.

Start your business with little to no money

one and maybe have little experience with baking. Well then, start your business journey but working for the best bakery around, gain experience and get paid to learn and make mistakes. Make friends with the owner share your passion and become friends, who knows they might even become your mentor.

‘Business Matters’ column, by Ryan Windsor

3. Start small: It’s ok to start with what you have. Using the above example you could start by baking for friends and family moving into corporate gigs, then get a market stall and slowly build that brand save your profit and reinvest in more products what you’ll also build is a solid track record of success and if you have been successful you’ll be in a much better and stronger position to open up that bakery. The best things about this strategy is you’ll have loyal customers who will follow you and support you on your journey and the best bit? You’ll have an income straight away.

I recently got asked by one of my clients about the financial cost of starting a business. What this client wanted to know was how much it costs to start a business. Now this may vary depending on the type of business, the capital costs and barriers to entry like competitions, industry and if you need any licenses but in many cases you can start with little money “Bootstrapping” or to no money at all. Now with any business one should always speak to an expert and conduct market research to determine if the venture is feasible and viable in the area you wish to trade in.

So don’t let a lack of starting capital hold you back. You don’t need to leave your job straight away, you don’t need to take out a huge bank loan. You just have to show up, put in the effort and a lot of hard work! It will pay off so… Believe in yourself

So here are 3 ways to build a business without money 1. Change your mindset: The first thing to do is the most important! You have to change the way you think, most of the things you have been taught about business is wrong! What I mean by that is that the news, schools and even friends and family give you the wrong impression and advice. They make it seem so complicated. Well that’s the old way of thinking, start surrounding yourself with positive people who have an abundance mindset and show up not show off. These people and hopefully you will start to think anything is possible if you put in the effort and hard work.

Would you like to ask Ryan a question? Email: ryanwindsor89@gmail.com

Local knowledge, personalised service

What this mindset does is put you in control on your life. 2. Model success: Learn from the best. For example, you want to open a bakery, but are not sure how to run

“You may choose to look the other way but you can never say you did not know” William Wilberforce The Global Slavery Index estimates people in some form of modern slavery globally number 35.8 million; 61% in 5 countries – India, China, Pakistan Uzbekistan, and Russia. Some governments impose state-sponsored modern slavery, as experienced by the 1.2 million people forced to harvest cotton in Uzbekistan, or those forced to labour in prison camps in North Korea. The Atlantic slave traders, ordered by trade volume, were: the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Spanish, and the Dutch Empire. Current estimates are that about 12 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic, over a period of over 400 years. This trade was made illegal in 1807 on both sides of The Atlantic.

doing many varied things, that we need to learn about. The Home Office believes that the numbers enslaved in the UK is likely to be between 10,000 and 13,000. If the spread around the UK is statistically even, there are likely to be a handful of slaves in Thetford. Modern slavery is a hidden crime. It takes many forms, and is known by many names: slavery, forced labour, or human trafficking, debt bondage, forced or servile marriage, and the sale and exploitation of children. All forms involve one person depriving another person of their freedom: their freedom to leave one job for another, their freedom to leave one workplace for another, their freedom to control their own body.

The life expectancy of a slave is very short. The number, at any one time, during the Atlantic Slave Trade, is likely to have been a small fraction of the current figure of nearly 36m over 200 years after slavery was “abolished”. For a variety of reasons not applicable today, enforcement then, was challenging but relatively straightforward. The slave owners were respectable people who at Abolition were handsomely compensated, so had little motive to continue illegally. The sea trade routes were well known and operated from known bases: thus it was possible for British and American navies to threaten to sink the slave boats while empty. Many slaves tended then to work on known large plantations. This time around it may be down to the citizen, in partnership with agencies, to root out slavery on the ground where it is happening. Those places aren't well known and are much less well defined. The slave Brunning Electrical .qxl:Layout 1 citizens. 25/11/2013 owners aren't generally respectable Slaves23:53 are

Modern slavery involves one person possessing or controlling a person in such as a way as to significantly deprive that person of their individual liberty, with the intention of exploiting that person through their use, management, profit, transfer or disposal. Modern slavery contributes to the production of at least 122 goods from 58 countries worldwide. From the Thai fisherman trawling fish-meal, to the Congolese boy mining diamonds, from the Uzbek child picking cotton, to the Indian girl stitching footballs, from the women who sew dresses, to the cocoa pod pickers, their forced labour is what we consume. Modern slavery is big business. Acknowledging the problem, and advocating against it is not philanthropy – it is our responsibility. The National Crime Agency’s (NCA) UK Human Trafficking Centre (UKHTC) reported in December last year, that 3,309 people, including 732 children, were identified by them as potential victims of trafficking for exploitation in the UK in 2014, an increase of 21 per cent on 2013. The report shows that for the fourth consecutive year, Romania was the most prevalent country of origin of potential victims of trafficking, although in this reporting period, victims exploited for labour surpassed sexual exploitation for the first time.

promised a better life in the UK with well-paid work. They are paid wages well below the legal minimum for extremely long hours and their pay is often taken to service debt on their accommodation. Victims are usually too scared to tell someone of their situation and are reluctant to seek help from authorities. Larger businesses have been encouraged to take action to ensure their end-to-end supply chains are slavery free.”

The UK remained the third most prevalent country of origin for potential victims with 300 cases, a 55% rise on the previous year. In other words about 10% of people identified in the UK as potential victims of trafficking were British: not from abroad.

Saturday, 23rd April 2016

The premise of Thetford's 23rd April Forum is that Trafficking is on the increase in the UK (up 21% last year) and Europe generally; that Thetford's demographic makes it a likely location; and that "trafficking is hidden in plain sight, existing "in our own, comfortable, local communities here in the UK".

Amnesty International Thetford Group Forum on Human Trafficking in the Thetford area Venue: Salvation Army Hall, Magdalen Street, Registration and drinks: 10am Sessions start at 10.30am and Forum ends at 1pm Aims: 1. Raise awareness in and around Thetford of the signs of trafficked people 2. Enable contacts and links to be made between individuals and groups 3. Raise confidence in the reporting of suspicions 4. Give clear guidance about contact details for referrals

Stephen Bett, PCC for Norfolk said: "I am sorry to say that Modern Slavery is a reality and is happening everywhere, including in Norfolk. There is no doubt that we are talking about an abuse of Human Rights which affects society’s most vulnerable and we all have a role to play in helping those who are being exploited”. Local forces say modern-day slavery is happening in Norfolk - and are urging people to keep an eye on what's going on in their neighbourhood. They highlight how to spot the signs and how to report anything suspicious. Mr Wabe spoke about the history of Town Criers, why they carried out the job that they do and their importance, especially in the past. He went on to explain all about the clothes that he wears after which pupils were then treated to a demonstration of a Town Crier in action! The pupils have now been given the chance to participate in the Junior Thetford Town Crier competition which takes place in August for children aged between 6 and 14. Iris and Holly in Pre-Prep said 'He had a bell' and 'it was very loud’. Tom in Year 5 said that he would definitely like to enter the competition as he would also like to be a Town Crier.

Personal Training We all need a little help just starting out sometimes or maybe we’ve been at it for a long time. There are a variety of help options with exercise. Sometimes that help comes in the form of hiring a personal trainer. Some of the reasons for this are listed below:

Personal Bests for Club Members Thetford Dolphins Junior swimmers travelled to Whittlesey for round 1 of the Fenland Junior League and were again in outstanding form, producing one club record, 16 first places and 30 personal bests resulting in a fantastic first place finish. Archie King broke the clubs 9 years age group record in winning the boys 50m free. The following Dolphins were victorious.

- You’re not seeing results. - You don’t know where to start. - You need to be challenged. - You want to learn how to exercise on your own. - You need accountability and motivation. - You have a specific illness, injury or condition.
