Moat Road Nursery

Simon Robson has been trading on Thetford’s Saturday Market for around 20 years. Moat Road Nursery is based at Terrington St Clement, near King’s Lynn and has been owned by the family for five decades. Simon was offered the site on Thetford Market when the previous owner decided to retire from the markets, “It was a full and busy market back then. Like many markets it has declined over the years but we still get a lot of regular and loyal customers that support us”.

The Nursery is also open to the public for an even greater range. Details can be found on the Facebook page or the website: www.moatroadnursery.co.uk

There’s also a large range of fresh cut flowers that Simon tries to buy from locally grown suppliers alongside importing flowers from Holland. In December the stall sells a range of UK grown Christmas Trees and holly wreaths. Now is the ideal time to start planting your summer bedding plants so pop down on a Saturday and have a look. Tomatoes, cucumbers and vegetable plants also ready.

With years of experience, Simon is always happy to help if customers ask for advice about the plants. “We still grow a lot of plants on site but due to the large range we offer we also buy from other nurseries. We try to buy as many locally grown plants as possible but also import some plants

What can I recycle at home?

What can’t I recycle at home?

Recycling the right items that are clean and empty means your recycling can be transformed into useful everyday items.

Some items can’t be recycled at home or need to be treated by more specialised recycling equipment.

Recycling Right really does make a difference. It enables us to collect good clean recycling that can be turned into something new. It can boost Norfolk’s recycling rate. Householders in Norfolk already recycled almost half the waste they produced last year. With your help we can recycle even more.

Womble 100 Challenge For Thetford Litter Pickers Mac and Sue McDonald (who are featured on our front cover this month) are well known in Thetford for the regular litter picks they organise on the Admirals Estate with the residents group. On a Saturday in late March Sue noticed the large amount of rubbish all along the Croxton Road during a dog walk. The ongoing cycle path work had exposed a lot of legacy litter which had built up over years. Sue decided to put out a request on Facebook for anyone who might wish to join a group of socially distanced litter pickers the following morning. There was clearly a lot of interest as they stopped taking any more names within a few hours.

Mac and the team who cleaned up Croxton Road Image: Sue MacDonald

The next day 9 people (including 3 family groups) started at the Healthy Living Centre and headed up past the Academy finishing at the edge of the town. In only an hour and a half an amazing 33 Breckland bin bags were filled. “As seems normal nowadays there were many face masks, but the sheer volume of alcohol bottles was a real shock, as were the unused COVID lateral flow testing kits. Plastic drinks bottles and fast food takeaway containers continue to be prolific, but the half an exhaust was not expected!” said Sue. The group all came from different parts of the town and collectively felt a huge sense of well-being. In the following days Mac and Sue came across the Captain Sir Tom Moore’s 100 challenge to mark his 101st birthday. Inspired by this Mac and Sue created the Womble 100 Challenge, undertaking at least one hour of litter picking every day from April 17th until July 25th. During this time they will be inviting special guests to help with the litter picking. Breckland District Council are

supporting the challenge by providing green bags and collecting the rubbish as soon as possible after each pick. Alongside the litter picking Mac and Sue have also set up a crowdfunding page where donations can be made. All funds raised will be split between Thetford based wellbeing charities, Men’s Shed, Art for Wellbeing and purchasing litter picking equipment that can be given out to Thetford residents or local groups to encourage others to keep Thetford tidy. On day one of the challenge, Mac and Sue were joined by a group including Norwich Road Residents Association, Cloverfields and Willows Residents Association and staff from Tesco, who also donated £50. Over 25 bags of rubbish were collected from the surrounding area. Tesco also donated 25 litter pickers for the team. Moving to the other end of town for day two, Mac and Sue discovered the Sainbury’s end of London Road was a hot spot for fly tipping, which has since been reported. Although they collected 12 bags of rubbish Sue said, “Sadly the amount of litter and fly tipping in this area is enormous and in the 1 hour we only skimmed the surface. We will head back to that location at some point during the challenge hopefully with some volunteers to make more of an impact. We are delighted how the challenge is going so far, although even we have been shocked at the amount of litter. Everyone has been so supportive and positive. We are hoping that a tidier Thetford will be a lasting legacy from this event.” You can follow Sue and Mac’s challenge on Sue’s Facebook page Sue MacDonald or Litter Free Thetford or Twitter #Womble100 To make a donation please visit: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ suzanne-macdonald-1

Children’s Bubble Party The children and staff at Queensway Infant Academy and Nursery in Thetford ended their Spring term with class bubble birthday parties. Pupils would normally celebrate their birthdays by having a birthday lunch at school with all their friends throughout the year. Unfortunately, due to the current situation and the closing of schools most pupils missed this opportunity. Parents of the school are always very supportive and it was suggested by one parent (a member of our ‘Friends of the School’) the idea to have whole class birthday parties. This involved every child in the class having a birthday cupcake provided by the school kitchen each with a candle to blow out, a small gift to take home and a goody bag. Party games were played in class bubbles and fun was had by all children and staff. All the gifts and goody bags were put together and delivered to the school by one of our parents and we would like to say a huge thank you to her for all her hard work. Sainsbury’s in Thetford were very kind and supported this idea by donating a Cadbury’s cream egg for every child. We would like to also send our thanks to them.

Bubble Party at Queensway Infant Academy

The school followed the Government Guidelines by keeping the parties strictly to class bubbles. It was lovely to see the children smile and have fun together after such challenging times. As one child shouted to his mum when leaving school “That was the best day ever!”

Choosing The Right Education For Your Child Norwich Road Academy’s origin dates back to the 1860s, when the original Victorian school was built and boys and girls were taught separately. Today, Norwich Road Academy is a two-form entry primary school, with nursery and accommodates children from 3 years to 11. Working parents are supported by before and after school provision from 7:30am to 6pm. The Academy is part of Eastern Multi Academy Trust. The current Principal, Julia Miles, has been in post since 2019 and is an experienced school leader. She said, “We have a highly skilled and professional team here. We work closely with parents and their feedback to us is extremely positive.” One parent recently commented, “I couldn’t be happier. I am sure that I made the right decision.”

Thetford Rotary Club

Over the last few weeks the Rotary Club has held a number of meetings by Zoom, most being joint meetings with our satellite club Rotary@CBC. In February, our speaker was Justine Staines from Senara Hypnotherapy. She explained (and demonstrated) how she is able to help people with addictions, and irrational fears, through hypnosis. Justine also told us about another of her particular skills, a detailed knowledge of tea and how best to enjoy it. She is not impressed with teabags! In March one of our members, Brian Farrell, talked about a period of his career in the RAF, in the late 1980’s when he went to the Falkland Islands. This was a few years after the war in 1982. As an engineer, he and his team were maintaining and installing surveillance equipment on different parts of the islands. Apart from our regular meetings, members of Rotary@CBC organised a very successful quiz night over Zoom, with nearly 40 participants. Aside from a very entertaining way to spend a Saturday evening, the aim was to raise funds for our charity account. The outcome was a net profit of a little over £400, all of which will be used to help charities, both local and further afield. At Norwich Road Academy pupils enjoy reading together and a love of books is encouraged

The academy benefits from extensive grounds. Visitors are astonished by the size of the site behind the Victorian frontage and infant playground. Beyond this, there is an additional junior playground, a brand-new purpose-built dining hall, a dedicated Early Years outdoor area, two fields and a nature area. There is a carved seating circle that can accommodate a whole class for learning outdoors. The emphasis is on high standards and engagement. The curriculum focuses on core knowledge acquisition, and children are supported to find their learning aspirational and fun. Reading is an important feature of academy life and there is a well-stocked library on site. Have a look at their website to find out more about what they do, particularly if you are interested in supporting their young people or securing a place for your child.

At Norwich Road Academy, we are a dedicated setting for pupils in Nursery to Year Six. We have a highly trained and professional team who can support your child to achieve their best.

Is your child ready to start school?

What we can offer you at Norwich Road: • A ‘Knowledge Rich’ curriculum. • High standards across all areas. • Strong values and high aspirations. • A dedicated Early Years setting for pupils in Nursery and Reception. • Extensive school grounds, including football pitches and a nature area. • A well-stocked library. • Extra-curricular activities. • Before and after school care (7.30am – 6pm). George Wild Staniforth A Legacy For Thetford

Not much is known about when GW Staniforth arrived in Thetford or why he chose to come here along with his sister Harriet. One of the most personal items bequeathed to the museum is Staniforth’s penknife, engraved with his name and the year 1920, this object was found in a chest once belonging to Waddie Stagg, and donated to the museum. In 1937 Staniforth is mentioned in the Sheffield Independent as having presented a collection of books to Sheffield City Museum in Weston Park. Staniforth also enjoyed a variety of sports including cricket and bowls. We know he was a member of the Ex-Service Bowls Club and was a very keen player. There is now a Staniforth Bowls Club situated in King’s House Gardens, his former home. Staniforth lived a quiet life in the town until he passed away in January 1947 at Kings House, almost 3 years after his sister Harriet had died at Briar Bank Nursing Home in the town. Two years later Staniforth’s name appeared in the Daily Mirror. He had left his fortune of £77,728 (worth £2,764,793.12 in today’s money), collection of books and his property Kings House along with its gardens. At the time the Town Clerk, George Blaydon said that Staniforth had ‘expressed a wish that a building be found to house his

collection of books and animals. So as soon as the council offices are moved to Mr. Staniforth’s house, the old offices are to be turned into a library and museum”. The Staniforth Collection of books remain in the ownership of the GW Staniforth Trust who maintain Kings House and its gardens. The gardens have been used as a backdrop for Thetford Town Council activities, wedding photos, community events and are home to the Staniforth Tennis and Bowls Clubs. The Staniforth name was one of those chosen to be honoured when the Overspill project was developed. In the 1960s Thetford Secondary Modern school was built on the new Barnham Cross Estate, on Staniforth Road. The School was later renamed as Staniforth Secondary Modern School before becoming Charles Burrell High School. Today many Thetfordians are aware of the name but few know that the person behind the name was not a Thetfordian, but a Yorkshireman by birth who came here to live out the last 20 years of his life, but left so much to the town he adopted as home. A pair of shoes used for special or ceremonial occassions, pierced holes in each heel indicate that these have been hung up and could have been on display. Thetford’s in the movies

You really can’t stop a team of passionate volunteers when they want to do what they do best – being loud and proud about the town they love. Nope, not even a global pandemic and a load of lockdowns can curb their enthusiasm. The amazing Leaping Hare team have made a series of three-minute films highlighting some of Thetford’s unique history, encouraging everyone to “Leap into

Thetford”. We featured the story of the Bell Inn corner post and pillboxes, as well as covering the U3A “Our Beautiful Thetford” booklet and the virtual Thetford Open Gardens event. We worked with Neil James Media on a film about the Maharajah Duleep Singh memorial at Elveden church. Neil brings such skill and talent to every project, and we were pleased

to collaborate again on our Castle Hill film. Neil cleverly incorporated stunning drone footage to help convey the breathtaking scale of one of our most recognisable ancient sites. This month Neil and the team captured another ancient site on the other side of town: Thetford Priory. You can watch all our films on our YouTube channel (LeapingHare). Subscribe to avoid missing out on future films.

Events are slowly returning to our lives: contact our box office for tickets for our new Strolling Through Time walks, tours of Euston Hall and Gardens, Thetford Open Gardens and Flourish.

VOLUNTEER FOCUS

We’re open again! After all these months in lockdown, we’ve missed everyone so much and we couldn’t wait to re-open the doors of our King Street shop. Our lovely makers have been busy creating new stock – we have brand new Kettlecorn, plus a full range from Stepping Stones Emporium: vegan-friendly soaps, bubble bath bombs and shower steamers, wax melts and soy candles. Dan Morgan has produced new framed full-size prints, and we have some lovely pieces from Woodcrafts by Dejay. Dejay is a talented 12-year-old wood turner, specialising in bespoke pieces made from wood and resin. Look out for a feature about him in next month’s About Thetford.

Leaping Hare volunteer Mike Wabe is passionate about history in general and Thetford in particular. He is our lead tour guide, helps to write our scripts and does a terrific job of presenting our Leap into Thetford films. He is at the heart of our new “Strolling Through Time” heritage walks and can’t wait to welcome people along. Mike also becomes Michael the Moneyer, striking coins as they would have been made when Thetford had its own mint. In his spare time (!) he is a professional toastmaster, runs the successful theatrical murder-mystery evening Murder Most Foul and is currently Watton’s town crier. He also gives presentations on a wide variety of historical subjects for groups and organisations. Busy? Just a little!

The leisure complex, which is owned and managed by Breckland Council, will see Dough and Co serve up freshly baked pizzas from its wood-fire ovens. Meanwhile, another restaurant, Burger Amour, will offer delicious gourmet burgers from its grill. The restaurants are both expected to open in the spring and are owned by Chris Sharman, who gained experience working as a chef in Michelin Star restaurants. He later worked for celebrity chef Marco Pierre White. Mr Sharman first started his pizza business from a converted horse box in 2015, but has since opened seven restaurants, including at sites in Colchester and Bury St Edmunds, with six more preparing to open their doors.

Chris Sharman, Chief Executive of Dough and Co, said: "Our ethos is to do it well but keep it simple and I can't wait to share that with people in Thetford. We source our pizza ingredients direct from Italy and our burgers are all grilled to order, so we can offer an authentic taste in a really relaxed atmosphere. Being alongside the river is a fantastic dining location and I can't wait to throw open the doors and welcome customers."

The new pizza and burger restaurants will share the space at the leisure complex currently occupied by Burger Brats, which closed during lockdown. The owners have since decided not to reopen, instead focusing on their outlets in Suffolk and Essex. There is currently one vacant unit at Thetford Riverside, however the council is in advanced discussions with a prospective tenant and hopes to announce its occupancy in the coming weeks. Spring Has Sprung! Spring has sprung and my heart is lifted by the sight of daffodils along the roadside, and buds bursting open on trees and hedgerows. Birdsong wakes me each morning and makes me smile as the dawn colours change the sky outside of my window. A few more weeks and we will be able to start meeting others outside. The Rule of six has had me thinking about the people I most want to be with again. My children don’t live locally, so I will have to wait a little longer to be with them, a little longer to wait for those most important hugs and kisses. Until then I’ll choose locally; anyone whose company lifts my spirits. With light appearing at the end of the tunnel, I have been thinking about my new ‘normal’ life. I’ve had time to realise how much effort I’ve put into things that haven’t helped me, or my community long term. I’ve decided to throw out old ways of thinking, and being, and only keep in my life those things that are helpful and supportive. Walking around the trees and waterways of Thetford have kept me sane, so those walks must certainly stay. Helping with the Conservation group has also been wonderful, though social distancing meant we worked together, apart. It felt great to be helping, and to see the difference we made to the green spaces. With more people out walking and cycling it means everyone benefits from a valued and protected environment. I’ve also thought about what habits I can change, and which habits need scrapping. I’m going to prioritise a safer future. I’m going to walk the long way to the shop and appreciate whatever nature I come across. I’m going to take my own food containers with me to the supermarket to cut down on plastic, and I’m going to only buy cake or chocolate when I’ve someone to share it with. I will only meet people that make me feel happier; I'll focus on all the best bits of life, and act now against what is harmful.

I invite you to focus for a few minutes on your ‘New Normal’. What harmful things can you remove from your life and what easy changes can you make to help protect the future for all our children and grandchildren? Thank you. Gardening Notes For May 2021 One thing about the chilly weather in April is that the daffodil flowers last longer. Now it is the turn of tulips (tucked away out of the reach of the muntjac so all the more precious) and all the new growth of May; this must be one of the most pleasurable months for those who like gardens – the long days with milder weather and the world all green again at last. Take the time to walk round your local neighbourhood and enjoy other people’s efforts – and pick up some ideas of what does well locally to transfer to your own garden. Less delightful is the fact that grass is really into its stride now and you should aim to cut once a week to encourage new fresh growth. This is a job to do when you have finished with the borders because that neat finish shows off everything else growing there to advantage. In fact, even clumps of weeds like dead-nettle can look attractive as they lean over the lawn – and you are doing your bit for nature with anything flowering for the insects and for the climate with green leaves soaking up carbon dioxide for us all. Keep an eye on the longrange weather forecast now and choose your moment to indulge in summer bedding. The Brecks can get frosts in May, though a sheltered garden in town will escape them while an exposed site risks losing anything too delicate. If you are able to start flowers or vegetables in the greenhouse, give them a few extra nights outside in a protected area before transplanting to harden them off. The vegetable plot is beginning to fill up. Potatoes benefit from earthing up and any still left to plant should go in the ground as a priority. Brussel sprout plants can be transplanted now or you can buy half a dozen from a garden centre; beware pigeons however and put some wire or fleece protection round the new plants – birds love young brassicas. Sweet corn should be planted out in

blocks to aid wind pollination though, if you are growing the mini version for stir-fries, this is picked at an immature stage before the seed sets and can be grown in rows. A tip for the more advanced gardener who is going to grow melons in the greenhouse: apparently it gets things off to a good start if you keep the growbags in the greenhouse for a fortnight before planting in order to warm them through and you should also water the growing medium a couple of days before the plants go in. This is well beyond my skills but I do anticipate planting out courgettes this month, ideally near the water butt as they are a thirsty crop – though perhaps not as demanding as pumpkins which can almost be seen to swell up with lavish watering.

Two Bank Holidays this month – just right for this busy time in the garden and on the allotment. Make sure you have somewhere to sit and drink a cup of tea and admire your endeavours though. If you see a patch of nettles in your empire, bear in mind that it is Be Nice to Nettles Week from the 15th May; the balance of the natural world depends on a bit of wildness and freedom from our interference; nothing goes to waste – though I could wish there were fewer slugs and snails wanting to share all the new growth. Still, how dull life would be without challenges! No Job to Small 1-8 Advert REV2.qxp_Layout 1 11/09/20 Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

Charles Burrell Centre Happy To Be Open Again! The 12th April saw CBC being able to open again for tenants to welcome back their students and clients for dancing, martial arts, cheerleading, hairdressing, arts classes, West Suffolk College courses, beauty treatments and more. It has been great to see more and more people accessing the centre and bringing back the Burrell Buzz! Staff are getting back to more normal working hours and Joanne is on hand to take enquiries about hiring the hall or rooms for events, meetings and training. The Burrell Shop continues to grow from strength to strength and in May will be open to members from across South Thetford. It also will deliver different services; and the Hygiene Bank is one of those services which will be available by 1st May.

The Hygiene Bank is like a foodbank but focusing on any product that helps to keep us, our clothes MCPour HPhomes Advertclean. 11.18.qxp_Layout 1 19/11/2018 and Hygiene should not be a luxury but with local people taking time away from

school or work due to lack of access to these products we need a solution. We will be able to take donations of products from individuals as well as companies. We can also take donations via Just Giving We can then purchase at wholesale cost the items that are in demand making your £1 go even further! Items are then given for free to local schools, charities, churches and organisations who in turn will give for free to families and individuals they are aware of that need a helping hand. To donate via Just Giving use this link: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/thbthetford We are also now a registered Fuel Bank via the the Fuel Bank Foundation. Currently we may be able to help anyone in Thetford and the outlying villages who is struggling financially who has a top up meter for gas and or electricity. For information on that or The Hygiene Bank please get in touch with Billie at the Burrell Shop via email: billie@charlesburrellcentre.org.uk We have some projects and events in the pipeline that we are very excited about such as looking for volunteers to support the development of a Wellbeing Garden and Allotment. Baby Birds Writing this in mid April, baby birds are already starting to appear: the first Robin and Blackbird broods are fledging, and Mallard ducklings and Egyptian Goose goslings are afloat on our local waterways. By the time you read this, the young of several more birds will be making their first forays into the big wide world. This can cause some nerve-wracking moments for human on-lookers (not to mention the parent birds!) as these naïve young animals are particularly vulnerable. The young of ducks, geese and swans hatch with their eyes open and covered with downy feathers, and can leave the nest and fend for themselves straight away. The scientific term for this strategy is ‘precocial’. Whilst they tend to stick close to their mother (ducks) or both parents (geese, swans), ducklings, goslings and cygnets can feed themselves and swim strongly from the outset. Sometimes the youngsters are separated from their parents and although predators can take advantage of such temporary separation, the family usually comes back together quickly, as the parents and young recognise each other’s calls. If you see young waterbirds with no parents in sight, it is best to back off and leave them to reunite. Songbirds (Robins, Wrens, thrushes, tits, finches, etc.) are relatively undeveloped when they hatch – they are helpless, blind and lack feathers, and must be fed by their parents in the nest until they have grown their first full set of feathers. This strategy is described as ‘altricial’. Unfortunately young songbirds do sometimes fall out of their nest before they are fully feathered, hence cannot fly. In this case, it might be possible to replace the bird in the nest but only if you know where the nest is and can do so without damaging the nest, the surrounding vegetation or the bird itself. If that isn't possible, you could take it to a wildlife hospital for hand-rearing by an expert – RSPCA East Winch Wildlife Centre is our closest.

Fledged Robin being fed by its parent, by Tommy Holden / BTO

Even when songbirds are fully feathered and ready to leave the nest, the process of fledging often leads to these inexperienced and weakflying birds hopping around on the ground or in low vegetation. The parents will be nearby and will continue to feed them, if left undisturbed. At such times, the very best things we can do are to stay out of the way and keep cats indoors. Families of fledged birds usually move to areas of cover quite quickly, so this is only likely to be for a day or two at a time and will make a huge difference to their survival chances. Do you think you might have birds nesting in your garden? Could you take a closer look and find out? By being careful and following BTO’s code of conduct, it is safe to monitor nests. Doing so through the breeding season provides hugely valuable data, as well as a giving you a special insight into the lives of your local birds. The information gathered helps BTO scientists to better understand bird breeding success and what may be affecting it, making participation both enjoyable and very rewarding. Volunteers Appeal For EACH We need YOU to help us keep our shops open and raise vital funds! With many of our shop volunteers currently unable to lend a hand due to the pandemic, the number of hours’ support we normally receive is down more than 50%. We are facing a financial deficit over the next 12 months, following disruption to all our fundraising and retail, and at the same time our care and support is more important than ever as vulnerable families become exhausted from shielding. It is very important we manage our retail activity back to sustainable levels of income, but we will not be able to do this without more volunteer support. Might you be able to help? Just a couple of hours a week can make a difference. There are so many ways you can support us, from sorting donations and dressing windows to running the till and listing items on our eBay shop, and we always guarantee a friendly welcome! Why not pop in to your local EACH shop – we have 43 right across the region – chat to our team and arrange a taster session? Thetford Inner Wheel

It is amazing that one year has passed since we last met as a club. Since then we have all cooked, knitted and sewed for various charities. Over one hundred little hats have been delivered to the West Suffolk Hospital for the neonatal unit. We’ve kept our spirits up by zooming and emailing to keep in touch with each other. Some members joined Thetford Rotary in their online quiz but didn’t win! We are making plans for the future and only hope they will happen. Most of us have had at least one jab of the vaccine so hopefully things will return to normal (or as near as possible to it) soon. Get Set For Open Gardens The Open Gardens Team are busy with the final preparations for this year’s double event on June 6th and 27th. There are twelve special gardens opening on June 6th, all of which have been lovingly tended throughout the various lockdowns and will be looking glorious for you. Due to Government restrictions tickets will be limited and no more than 30 people will be allowed in a garden at the same time. Each garden will have a steward to greet you, and some of our smaller gardens cannot cope with that number of people so we ask for your patience if there is a queue at a garden you wish to visit. Early June is a fantastic time for roses and one of our gardens is almost exclusively devoted to them. Ola has over 100 roses in his gardens where he takes cuttings and multiplies his own roses. He said that he is devoted to roses because of their fragrance, colour and the amazing varieties, from small ground cover, to shrub and climbers. If you love roses, his garden is certainly one to visit. Another garden has over 40 roses and will have a prize for anyone who can name at least 20 of them! We want you to enjoy your day and so there will be refreshments available. We will be using individual recyclable cups for hot drinks and sandwiches and cakes will be in takeaway bags. Sue will miss using her fabulous china, but hopefully next year things will be back to normal. Plant sales will be in at least two of our gardens, but if you see something you like, please ask our garden hosts, they are often very generous with their cuttings.

Discover Ola’s passion for roses on the first of this year’s Open Gardens days

All tickets will carry a special prize draw number so not only are you supporting the hospice, but you could also win a fantastic prize.

Sherlock Holmes Investigates! This month Ancient House will be reopening for pre-booked school and group visits in line with the government advice. For all our visitors we are continuing to offer a varied online programme. To mark International Sherlock Holmes Day on 22nd May we have teamed up with Don’t Go Into The Cellar! Theatre Company, practitioners of theatrical Victoriana in a macabre vein for an online theatre experience. Acclaimed actor Jonathan Goodwin plays one of the greatest detective of all time in this one-man show. The performance has been specially filmed for the museum. The show is scripted by Jonathan Goodwin, based on the classic stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. International Sherlock Holmes Day commemorates the birth of Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. While most people associate Sherlock Holmes with London, he does have links with Norfolk. For example, research in the 1980s by the late Bernard Davies of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London revealed that the house in ‘The Gloria Scott’ was based on Rollesby Hall which used to stand north-west of Great Yarmouth. ‘The Gloria Scott’ is an unusual Holmes tale as it is narrated by Holmes himself and he tells Doctor Watson it was his first investigation and resulted in him choosing a career as a consulting detective. One of the stories which will be performed is ‘The Adventure of the Dancing Men’, which is set in Norfolk. In 1903 author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stayed at The Hill House pub in Happisburgh and was inspired by some stickmen figures drawn by Gilbert Cubitt, the landlord’s son. In 2014 Hill House started a brewery called The Dancing Men Brewery. Doyle also stayed at Cromer Hall in 1901 which served as a model for Baskerville Hall in ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’. Many believe that the Norfolk folk tale of Black Shuck was the inspiration for the ‘gigantic hound’ of the tale too.

Don’t Go In the Cellar Theatre Company’s work explores the relationship between the original source material and its broader appeal in subsequent twentieth century popular culture. This event will be hosted via Zoom webinar on Saturday 22nd May beginning at 7pm. Tickets are £5 or £2.50 for Norfolk Museums Service Passholders (only one ticket per household is required) at: www.norfolk-museums.arttickets.org.uk/ ancient-house/2021-05-22-sherlock-holmesinvestigates-online-play

Work Recommences! Sadly, the past few months have seen work practically grind to a halt within the Charles Burrell Museum. As the Manager, I’ve still been going into the Museum for safety checks and to do a bit of painting and display reorganisation... but there's only so much that I could achieve on my own! The lifting of restrictions means, that while the Museum sadly remains closed for the foreseeable future, I can at least begin to have volunteers back in the building to resume work – in small, socially distanced groups compliant with the Covid-19 guidelines of course. The biggest outstanding job is still the replacement of the tyres on Showmans Engine Queen Mary, and this has now been resumed in earnest with both back wheels having nearly two complete rings of tyre segments. Once these are welded in place the engine team will begin to bolt the centre ring in place, hopefully in the not-too-distant future! Other work is underway within the Museum itself also. The display boards now have their new content in place and look very good, even if I do say so myself! The painting and decorating within the building is now almost complete but there are a few other DIY jobs underway – including the

Some of the revamped display boards at Charles Burrell Museum

revamp of the Museums swinging sign which was looking very weather beaten and worn. The Museum is a different place with the volunteers back in it, they bring the building back to life and make it a real hive of activity which is wonderful to see. I’m ever hopeful that it won’t be too long until we can welcome visitors back too! Join The Teams Of Prison Gamechangers At Wayland Do you believe everyone in custody deserves to be treated fairly? Are you looking for a role which gives insight into a world that few people see? If so, the local Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) team at HMP Wayland are looking for people from all walks of life who live locally (within 30 miles) to join them and visit the prison 2-3 times a month.

Monitors in 117-plus IMBs across England and Wales come from all walks of life. Key qualities needed include analytical, decision making, plus communication and teamworking skills, and a commitment to independence and inclusion, as well as an open-minded approach. You’ll need to undergo selection and vetting processes, which can take a number of months, ahead of being formally appointed by Ministers in line with the Government’s public appointments process.

You’ll monitor activity across the establishment, and talk to prisoners to make sure that the prison is treating them fairly, and are also given the support they need to stop reoffending and rebuild their lives. Successful applicants have access to the prison in order to undertake the role, and although it’s unpaid, travel, childcare and loss of earnings expenses are available and full training and support is provided.

Interested? Book onto one of the virtual events being held during April to hear from current IMB members about the role or apply direct via: www.imb.org.uk/11082-2/

As Mike Gander, the Chair of the IMB at HMP Wayland, says: “It could be the most rewarding thing you have ever done. You can make a real difference to prison life, not just in responding to an individual prisoner’s request or complaint, but also by raising concerns about everything from crumbling buildings to people being kept in solitary confinement for too long.”

Do you waste hours of time on paperwork you loathe? Or do you loathe it so much that it’s not getting done at all? Make life easy, call for a free consultation:

Breckland Cats Protection In the past few months there have been a shortage of kittens, which is most unusual. We can only assume that owners are keeping their kittens and selling them on websites that allow it. Facebook do not allow anyone other than charities to advertise kittens, and posts are immediately taken down. But there are other unscrupulous sites that allow cats and dogs to be sold. A recent case in point, is that of a family who bought kittens from one of these sites. They paid £400 for 2 nine week old kittens and once they got them home realised that they were not well. They got in touch with a local rescue centre who took the kittens to their vet. Sadly one of the kittens was so infested with fleas that the next day he died. The other kitten was fighting to stay alive. This means that whoever raised these kittens didn’t even give them basic flea and worm treatment, let alone vaccines. Remember fleas kill kittens and even adult cats eventually. Fleas, once on the coat of a cat, multiply and multiply and suck all the blood out of them. This particular kitten’s gums were white, a good indication that he was severely anaemic. The mother cat must have had a very bad flea burden and the house they came from also must have had lots of fleas.

Make sure your kitten is vaccinated, and use the correct worm and flea treatment from your local vet

on line and it nearly killed her two kittens. They came into our care where they were taken immediately to our vet where one of them spent a few days. His coat was washed to remove the flea treatment and it was discovered that he had been blinded by it. Fortunately the blindness only lasted a few days and the kitten was fine again, but it could have been so much worse. Be careful where you buy kittens from. Charities such as ours care for their cats and kittens properly, and they are immediately given flea and worm treatment and are also vaccinated and microchipped and checked over by our vet. Charities also ensure that all kittens are neutered when they are old enough and pay for the operation. We spend around £120 on each cat or kitten that comes into our care, and our adoption fee is £80, meaning we are always out of pocket and without being able to fund raise for the past year or so, our funds are very much depleted. Hopefully as we come out of lockdown we will be able to fund raise again.

If your cat has fleas, only 5% of them are on your cat – the rest are in your home, living in carpets and soft furnishings. Once you have fleas in your home, they are very difficult to eliminate. That’s why it is so important to treat cats and kittens for fleas regularly and that you buy it from a reputable source, such as the vets. Fleas become resistant to all flea treatment eventually, and your vet will have the most up to date product that is known to kill fleas and the eggs that they lay. Therefore If you need advice, help or assistance with the buying cheap products from the supermarket or cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. on line, may not work and may even harm your cat Ovenclean AD.qxp_Layout 1 22/01/2021 08:41 Page 1 Made to Measure 1/8th Advert 2020.qxp_Layout 1 11/0 or kitten. South Suffolk Show 2021 The trustees of The South Suffolk Agricultural Association have now taken the decision to cancel the 2021 South Suffolk Show. This will be only the fourth time in the show’s 133 year history that the event has not occurred over two consecutive years, during which shows were cancelled from 1914 –1922 due to WWI, from 1931 – 1935 due to the depression and 1939 – 1945 due to WWII. Prolonging the decision for as long as possible in order to conserve any chance of the show going ahead this year, and even considering delaying the date until the weekend of June 26/27th being the last weekend possible before the commencement of harvest in the region, Chairman of The South Suffolk Agricultural Association Jim Mann advised that continuing with plans to hold the show was just too risky at this stage, with the lack of clarity around the easing of the lockdown restrictions meaning that we couldn’t guarantee the health and safety of the show’s visitors, judges, stewards, exhibitors and contractors. The Association is now focusing on the 2022 South Suffolk Show scheduled for Sunday 8th May, for which they are delighted to have secured the return of the hugely popular and

CHANCES Employment Project: Helping People Across Norfolk Citizens Advice Diss, Thetford and District (Cadat) are delighted to be partners in a £4.9m project with the aims of helping people to get back into work and to support people with barriers to work, for example, ill health. Led by Norfolk County Council, we will be working with Voluntary Norfolk, Norfolk Citizens Advice, and Future Projects. Local advocates will be based in the seven Norfolk district areas, working to provide personalised one to one support. Our advocates will be based in the Thetford area. Advocates will develop a Personal Action Plan to establish support required, skills gaps or training needs, as well as other important activity. The scheme will provide tailored help for people unable to access current national support schemes. Depending on individual needs, the project will help to identify skills gaps and find suitable training and qualifications, support to access services to boost health and wellbeing, or finding ways to overcome barriers such as transport or accessing childcare. This will include providing help to access services for those with physical or learning disabilities, with support available from specialists working with the team.

Mel Jones, CEO, Cadat, said: “Employment advice has been a major issue during the past year. The arrival of Chances is particularly timely and we are proud to be involved with this important project. It will help us to better support people furthest from the labour market, while giving a much needed boost to local residents excluded from work by Covid-19.” The project, administered by Norfolk County Council, has a total budget of £4.9 million, of which £2.5m is funded by the European Social Fund. The remainder comes from match-funders in Norfolk, including Norfolk County Council, The New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, and Norfolk’s Pooled Business Rates Programme. The Yoni Wellness Clinic Open Event May 2021 As lockdown continues to ease many individuals are so happy to be reunited with family and friends, relief from having received the vaccine. Pleased as they can return to business, place of work. Excitement as life can start to look a little like pre Covid. Though you may be feeling positive take a moment to pause for all the individuals who have had the greatest loss; the loss of life. Those individuals who have not received the best treatment or care due to restrictions. So many businesses have had to permanently close. Some individuals are dealing with demons of fear and anxiety as lockdown eases. Many people have much apprehension on what life will look like, longing for life to return but fear the life we once knew has gone. Some people are experiencing anxiety that it's all too soon and fear another lockdown as we are seeing in neighbouring countries. Not everyone has had the vaccine, some will choose not to, feelings of further segregation, divide of the 'them and us'. There is so much in the media about losing the weight you have put on as a result of lockdown. All I ask is that you be kind to yourself; what is important to you? Also, please can we all be kind and patient to each other as we move towards the next chapter and in truth no one knows what lies ahead. We cannot change the situation BUT we can change how we react! Here at The Yoni Wellness Clinic a number of free small group workshops in person and online are being held to support the community. Please contact for further details and to book your space. Coping Strategies For Anxiety Michelle will explain why anxiety occurs and introduce you to a number of strategies to help you deal with anxious thoughts or situations.

Time To Get Neck Fit! I can’t believe it’s the May issue already. It’s great to be back in the salon and giving treatments again to our wonderful loyal clients. This issue I thought we would discuss treatments and homecare available for helping to tighten and firm the neck area. Many of us are good at looking after our face but drop the ball when it comes to cleansing, moisturising and applying sunscreen on the neck. We have three treatments available in the salon. Firstly the Caci, also known as the non surgical facelift. This works using micro currents to tighten and firm both muscles and skin. This is a bit like a workout for the muscles so regular treatment is recommended. It is not a new treatment, it was designed for Bells- palsy and stroke patients but they soon discovered how it helped in tightening the skin and it was then used in the beauty industry. The second treatment we offer is our Venus Freeze. This uses radio frequency together with magnetic pulse and the skin feels instantly firmer but the effect will only last approximately 5 days so a course of 6-8 is recommended once a week for best results.

The third treatment is IPL and using intense pulse light to tighten and firm the skin and helps the skin by promoting its own production of collagen. 1-3 treatments are needed for optimum results between 3-4 week intervals. We have some amazing neck replenishing cream developed by Eve Taylor for homecare use. It contains avocado to nourish dry skin texture whilst a blend of frankincense, rosewood and clary sage to repair and strengthen the skin for soft and supple texture. If you are unsure which treatment you would benefit best from it is best to call us or pop into the salon as there are some health care restrictions for some clients on certain medications or certain medical conditions and one treatment maybe better suited than another. Keep well and stay safe!

Thank you for your ongoing support, it means so much to us! Hopefully, the roadmap will continue to schedule and we are looking forward to opening up for physical book clubs when we can.

is ignited that will put more than one life at risk. Spiralling around Mehar’s story is that of a young man who in 1999 travels from England to the now-deserted farm, its china room; locked and barred. In enforced flight from the traumas of his adolescence, his experiences of addiction, racism, and estrangement from the culture of his birth; he spends a summer in painful contemplation and recovery, finally gathering the strength to return home.

As always, we like to share with you the Indie Books of the Month. This month’s Fiction title is China Room by Sanjeev Sahota which has been described as an intense drama of classic themes - love, family, survival, and betrayal - told with passion and precision in Sahota’s economical, lyrical prose. China Room twines together the stories of a woman and a man separated by more than half a century but united by blood. Mehar, a young bride in rural 1929 Punjab, is trying to discover the identity of her new husband. She and her sisters-in-law, married to three brothers in a single ceremony, spend their days hard at work in the family’s china room, sequestered from contact with the men. When Mehar develops a theory as to which of them is hers, a passion

The Children’s title for May is By Ash, Oak and Thorn by Melissa Harrison: Three tiny, ancient beings, Moss, Burnet and Cumulus, once revered as Guardians of the Wild World, wake from winter hibernation in their beloved ash tree home. When it is destroyed, they set off on an adventure to find more of their kind, a journey which takes them first into the deep countryside and then the heart of a city. Helped along the way by birds and animals, the trio search for a way to survive and thrive in a precious yet disappearing world. Inspired by 1942 classic The Little Grey Men by BB, with shades of The Borrowers. A tale of disappearing wilderness that couldn’t be more relevant in today’s environmental crisis, brought to life for children by three tiny, funny, eternal beings - the hidden folk. Happy Reading!

Being Mindful We all have mental health, and it’s just as important as physical health. However, we often find that supporting and treating the body is prioritised over the mind. Mental and physical health are equally important. We know what steps to take when our bodies fall ill - we rest, take medicine, hydrate and see a doctor if needed. But, what steps do we take when our mental well-being is poor? How do we deal with mental illness?

We sometimes struggle to recognise the symptoms of mental illness, and even if we do, it can be difficult to know how to get help. But, there are things we can do to support our mental well-being. One of them is practicing Mindfulness. Joanne Milton, a teacher at the Thetford Academy, was trained to teach Mindfulness to students in 2015 and has recently completed a course to support adults with their mental well-being through Mindfulness, which she has been teaching to students aged 11-18. Joanne defines Mindfulness as “a way to calm a busy mind” by “focusing on the present moment”. This can be done by “focusing our breathing, moving mindfully and directing attention to the body” in a meditative way. So why practice Mindfulness? It aims to “help ease our mind” and provide a “sense of spacious calm”, which prevents our brains from becoming overwhelmed. The NHS and mental health charity Mind UK both advocate the benefits of Mindfulness, and research shows that Mindfulness can help manage worry, stress, anxiety and depression. Mindfulness can, with practice, help provide a new way of looking at the world and support our mental well-being. At a time when things still aren’t quite back to normal, it’s so important to treat our minds as we treat our bodies, and be mindful about our mental health.
