Robert McLean from the British Property Awards said “Our awards have been specifically designed to be attainable to all agents, removing common barriers to entry, such as cost, to ensure that we have the most inclusive awards. Our award has also been designed to remove any opportunity for bias or manipulation. If an agent has been attributed with one of our awards, it is simply down to the fantastic customer service levels that they have demonstrated across a prolonged period of time. Winning agents should be proud that their customer service levels provide a benchmark for their local, regional and national competition.”

All Fired Up! Celebrating Success At Charles Burrell Centre Volunteers at CBC have recently taken part in a Fire Marshall and Awareness Training session, which was really informative and enjoyable for all team members who took part. They even got the chance to use fire extinguishers! The Centre is dedicated to supporting the continued development of all staff and volunteers, many of whom took part in this recent training. One of the core volunteers has become an outstanding example of this. In recent months Philip Turner has successfully developed and learnt new skills completing training in Fire Marshall & Awareness, Computing and ICT as well as First-Aid.

Philip said: “I like coming in to CBC and seeing people. I have learnt how to set up computers and also what fire extinguishers to use in an emergency”. Philip is just one example of the many dedicated volunteers at CBC without whom the Centre would be unable to run and offer the opportunities that it does for the people of Thetford and the surrounding area. If you would like to find out more information or you would like to get involved in volunteering to develop new skills, add to your CV or just want to give some of your free time then get in touch. You can also become a member of CBC for just £1. You can contact Tom Fadden, Community Engagement Co-ordinator on 01842 779867, E-mail: tom@charlesburrellcentre.org.uk or visit the Centre on Staniforth Road, IP24 3LH. Church Launches Fundraising Campaign

The second phase is to replace the pews in the church and level the floor for new chairs. The church will then be able to use the space for a variety of activities rather than now where the space is restricted by the fixed pews. There will be an opportunity to sponsor a chair, perhaps a child being Christened or in memory of a loved one. St Cuthbert’s is regularly used by Thetford Grammar School as well as Thetford Town Council for their annual Civic Service and Christmas Carol Service.

St Cuthbert’s Church in the centre of Thetford is starting a fundraising campaign to bring the building up to date for the 21st Century. Dating from the 13th century, the Church was heavily restored during the 19th century and was the burial place for Thomas Paine’s father and sister. The Revd. Helen Jary Team Vicar explained, “We are seeking to renovate St Cuthbert’s Church in order that it may continue to be a wonderful place of worship, but also a multi-purpose facility for the community.” The first phase is raising enough money to renovate and extend the kitchen facilities. This will enable the hall to be used for lunch clubs and training young people as well as giving our regular users improved facilities.

Ask The Undertaker About Thetford is delighted to welcome Mark Skinner (pictured) to our family of columnists. Mark Skinner has been working in the funeral industry for 38 years, his grandfather was a funeral director and now his children, Sam and Lauren, work alongside him in his independent family funeral business. Over the years he has seen many changes, but one of the most obvious is the way people are now a lot more open in wanting to ‘know more’ about certain aspects of the funeral industry. Here we will feature some of the questions posed to them. If there is any topic or question you would like to appear here, please contact them using any of the contact choices in their advert. They look forward to hearing from you.

How do I know the ashes I receive are definitely those of my loved one?

is the case), there are multiple machines, all of which can only fit one coffin in at a time. Therefore as each person is cremated separately, the ashes received are most definitely those of your loved one.

This is a question we are most frequently asked and it is a very reasonable one. Unless you are in the funeral industry, how would you know how things work? It is not something that a lot of people want to talk about. For reassurance, however, we can tell you that instead of one big cremation machine (which many people believe

Thetford Society Talk On Edith Cavell Our July meeting began with a reminder of upcoming events and a gentle prompt for members to bring their annual subscriptions to the September AGM which should include the agreed £1.00 increase on all membership types. Our guest speaker for the evening was Barbara Miller who told us of Edith Cavell, the celebrated British nurse who saved lives of many soldiers from both sides during WWI. For these acts of valour she was arrested by the Germans and accused of treason. Found guilty by a court martial she was sentenced to death and on Whitechapel and spent the next 18 years working in 12 October 1915 aged just 49 Edith was shot dead by various roles at different locations within the profession. a firing squad in Belgium. Probus Visits BTO Headquarters

Village Church extends Open Sundays

Probus members never tire of learning more about Britain’s birdlife. Last year Dr Leuan Evans, of the British Trust for Ornithology, spoke on the subject and hosted the club’s July meeting held at his organisation’s headquarters. It provided the perfect opportunity to follow up his earlier talk and give Probus members even more insight into the BTOs work.

Greatly encouraged by a 2016 experiment, the Victorian gem which is St. Ethelbert at East Wretham, will be open for four Sundays in August and two in September. Normally the little church, with its wall, organ and font cover paintings by the Rev James P. Whalley, Rector at its 1864-65 rebuilding and its display relating to the Czech and Polish war graves in the churchyard, is closed to visitors, although it can be opened swiftly on request. The church will be open and manned by congregation members on August 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th, as well as on September 3rd and 10th, from 10.30am to 4pm. LIght refreshment and plenty of parking is available each time at the church, which is just off the A1075 outside Thetford (IP24 1RL).

Probus members at BTO’s Nunnery headquarters

Speaking about the headquarters, he said that it had been established in 1993, occupying buildings that in centuries past had been a Nunnery and now after careful restoration, housed the Trust’s staff in a modern office complex with conference areas and the country’s most extensive library on birds. Out & About Thetford

Songs and Stories says goodbye to Louise After 4 years at the helm, Louise Sanders has passed on the baton at Songs & Stories held every Friday during term time at the URC in Earl Street. The sessions include time to play, a craft activity based on a bible story, a snack and singing time. “As we’re in a church it makes sense to make the link and share a bible story with the children, but everyone is welcome and you don’t need to be religious to join in.” Louise explained. “Children are welcome from birth until they reach school age, this summer we have quite a few older children leaving us so we’re really keen to get the word out that we’re here and new members would be very welcome, it’s a great way to make new friends.” The new group leader Alex Elmy has a background in working with young people and is also mum to Jack aged 18 months. Alex and Jack joined the group just over a year ago and have loved taking part. “It’s such a lovely group, when Louise said she needed to finish I wanted the group to carry on and thought it would be a new challenge.” Songs and Stories every Friday during term time 9.30 – 11am at the United Reformed Church, Earl Street. For more information contact Alex by email: alex.elmy7@gmail.com

Thetford Grammar School Nifty Fifties Reunite School leavers from 1983 and

1985 were brought together at the beginning of July to celebrate their 50th birthdays. The event was organised by Lorraine Campbell and Jane Kabey, the group enjoyed a tour around the school and a celebration cake, an afternoon at the school summer fete followed by an evening get together at the Thomas Paine Hotel. Travelling from across the UK and USA for their reunion, for many it was the first time they’d seen each other for 30 years or more. Jokes about the classrooms being the same and that one or two teachers still remained were prevalent, but as one current parent commented, “That’s why my son loves being at TGS, the history and being in the same environment that I was.” Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

Horticulture project opens in Thetford a new social enterprise has

officially opened at the Charles Burrell Centre. The Horticultural Industry Scheme—known as THIS, has spent the past few months working on a piece of land which was originally the school’s allotment. Tim Melvin and Georgina Keatley have already set up a similar site in London, with a third planned for Essex in the near future. Tim explained, “All the people we work with have had contact with the judicial system. This contact has L to R: Ben, Tim and workforce members then created a barrier for them. We help people to improve their employability. Horticulture has long been associated with personal growth and well being.” The project aims to produce high quality salads and edible flowers for the local restaurant trade. One well known local restaurant recently featured the project’s borage flowers in a salad on their menu. Tim and Georgina have recently taken part in the Lloyds School for Social Entrepreneur Start Up Programme and were joined by their mentor, Ben Makowiecki Area Director, Agriculture, East of England for Lloyds Banking Group at the opening. Tim is keen to hear form people with horticultural expertise willing to share their skills and knowledge as volunteers, or anyone who has redundant tools, excess plants or seeds that the project can reuse. You can follow their progress at www.this.org.uk, via Facebook: The Horticultural Industry Scheme CIC or for more information email tim.melvin@this.org.uk

My Fair Lady wows Audiences

An elated cast from Thetford Players are celebrating their latest success. My Fair Lady is the second summer musical the group has performed, but the first with an adult cast. Director Caroline Foot and Musical Director Claire Lowe joined forces once more along with the Players regular back stage team. Stars of the show were Charlotte Jeffries with her portrayal of Eliza, and Craig Plumley as Professor Higgins. Andy Cunnell also deserves a mention for his supporting role of Colonel Pickering, completing a compelling trio who kept the audience spellbound. As with every Players production there are simply too many outstanding cast and crew members to name check, but every single person should be congratulated on a job very well done! This production had an additional shimmer of stardust from several members of Thetford Academy 6th Form Drama department. Highlights of the performance included ’Wouldn’t it be loverly’ and ‘I could have danced all night’, not only sung to perfection by Charlotte, but also beautifully choreographed by Maddie Soan. Some of the best comedy moments were provided by Phil Pearson as Eliza’s father; playing the loveable rogue in his own inimitable style culminating with a fabulous rendition of ’Get me to the Church on time’. Yet again the Thetford Players have shown that they’re a talented bunch on every level and can take a ’national treasure’ and make it their own. www.thetfordplayers.co.uk

Celebrating First Anniversary Of Lifesaving Partnership More than 400 patients have been helped by a lifesaving partnership between firefighters and ambulance staff in Norfolk.

We take the pain out of the painting Free estimates & competitive rates. For your all interior and exterior decorating requirements. Professional, friendly & reliable. Fully insured

A pilot project between the East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) to treat the most critically ill patients started on 18th July 2016. Since then firefighters have responded to 405 medical emergencies across the county to help save lives when someone is unconscious and not breathing. Firefighters from Great Yarmouth, Gorleston, King’s Lynn, Norwich, North Walsham, Sheringham and Thetford are dispatched to cardiac arrest calls alongside ambulance staff and volunteers.

Call Arry 01842 752620 or 07540 661503 Email: infonj2s@gmail.com

Wendy Risdale-Barrs, EEAST Co-responding Regional Lead, said: “This milestone is a testament to the excellent collaborative work in Norfolk between our emergency services. I would like to pay tribute to everyone for getting behind the scheme since day one which has made a significant impact on the lives of many. Every second counts when someone is in cardiac arrest and getting someone there quickly doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and equipped with a defibrillator greatly increases the chances of survival.” Paul Seaman, NFRS’s lead officer for emergency medical response, said: “In the first year of coresponding, firefighters from nine Norfolk stations took part in the national pilot attending patients in cardiac arrest, alongside paramedic colleagues. The scheme has undoubtedly seen some successful outcomes for patients and staff at Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service have approached this new work with upmost professionalism. I have been immensely proud of the firefighters’ work in what at times have been extremely stressful situations.”

Brecks Conference Celebrates Fascinating Heritage Since 2014, the Heritage Lottery Fund - supported Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership Scheme has delivered a wide range of projects focussing on the rich natural and historic environment of the Norfolk and Suffolk Brecks. As the partnership enters its final months, a one-day conference was held to report on and celebrate the results of the numerous heritage related projects which have been undertaken by partner organisations with help from local volunteers. On Saturday 24th June, a multitude of presentations took place at the Carnegie Room in Thetford, free for anyone who wished to attend. Speakers included Jon Gregory from the University of East Anglia, Vicky Tustian from the Forestry Commission, Peter Goulding from the Breckland Society, Sarah Horlock from Norfolk Historic Environment Service and Richard Hoggett, who organised the event.

“The archaeological record of the Brecks is really first class, ranging from some of the earliest known sites of human occupation through to the extensive military use of the landscape in the 20th century. During the last three years the Breaking New Ground project has enabled local people to research the heritage of the Brecks in a number of different ways and it was great to see all of those strands coming together at our conference.”

Over 85 people attended the event and were treated to topics such as the newly uncovered stories of the Brecks’ military history, post-medieval landscape change, the Brecks Archaeological Training Programme and Brandon Engine House. Details were revealed of the extensive range of archaeological sites hidden in Thetford Forest which have been newly revealed by laser scanning from the air.

Nick Dickson of Breaking New Ground said “It is wonderful to see so many come to celebrate the lesser well-known human heritage of the Brecks. The biodiversity importance of the area has been highlighted in recent years, so to see so many people interested in the stories to be told across the landscape is a great testament to the work by our project partners.” Richard Hoggett, who ran the Brecks Archaeological Training Programme and set up the conference said

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Gardening Notes for August If you are growing vegetables, they are probably ripening in abundance now and you are able to feast on your produce. In fact, it may be very inconvenient to go away on holiday! Ideally in your absence a plant sitter is required not just for watering and weeding but also for picking crops before they get too big or coarse. Vegetables like beans are so much nicer to eat when young and before they become “stringy”. If you do have to leave a crop to mature, ruthless picking is required when you come home. Plants like courgettes and beans will concentrate their efforts on the large maturing fruit and not produce a fresh crop unless you interfere. Before you throw some of your pickings away, do consider whether you have a contender for the heaviest marrow or longest runner bean in our September show or can convert some items into chutney – there is even a recipe for courgette lime cake in the members’ diary! I recently lifted a head of elephant garlic and found several hard brown lumps adhering to the cloves. These are corms and should be planted at the same time as cloves in the autumn. The outside shell is very hard so should be soaked or chipped before planting – in fact I shall just re-plant them as I come across them as they will get even harder once they are exposed to the air. While a clove should produce a head of garlic, a corm will only give you a mono-clove, though it may be quite big. If you leave it to grow on another year, you should be rewarded with a good head of cloves. (Elephant garlic is worth growing if you care for the flavour; it has

cloves easily twice the size of normal garlic and a mild flavour. It is very easy to handle in the kitchen and I find it grows more happily on my allotment than the ordinary type of garlic.) This is a month when strolling round the garden can be combined with dead-heading flowers as they go over. This gives you a close-up appreciation of your plants, their colour, form and scent. Roses seem to grow to just the right height for this. You may decide to leave some of the old flower-heads in order to collect the seeds or let them broadcast naturally. A good plant for this would be larkspur which is such a striking blue in the border, especially for those of us who do not have much success with the delphinium, its grander cousin. Aquilegia is another simple plant with pretty leaves and a good self-seeding habit. I am always pleased to see the hollyhocks springing up and curious to find which colour variation will appear each year. Pruning is part of August’s list of tasks. If you have trained fruit trees they are probably looking quite shaggy by now and all those side shoots need taking back to the third double leaf. Berry bushes need crossing shoots and the centre of the bush clearing – keep thinking of how you will manage to find and pick the fruit and that gives you a sense of the shape to aim for, often described as like a goblet. Also needing attention are single-flowering rambler or climbing roses. Ramblers will send out long, wild shoots which which catch you in the face as a reminder! To set against my grumbles about the muntjac deer eating my plants, within a few days in July we were visited by a large grass snake, a frog and a hedgehog. I think all these would eat a slug or other pest so was mightily pleased to see them briefly before they rushed into hiding again. No general meeting this month but there is the members’ barbecue on Saturday 19th at 4pm on the London Road site. Let’s hope the weather is kind...

‘Old Skool’ Inspires New Bar Business When Ricky Jermy returned to Thetford after more than 10 years working on cruise ships, he was looking for a new challenge. Having spent so long developing his customer service skills and enjoying making people’s special moments memorable, a new career that included working with people was inevitable. When About Thetford’s Assistant Editor, Karen sat down with Ricky recently, he said, “I was aware that some of the furniture at my old school was surplus to requirements and it got me thinking. The history contained within that furniture was phenomonal. I thought I’d rediscover a former hobby - woodwork, and build a bar.” With the help of his late Uncle Dennis, Ricky created the original Old Skool Bar set up from some exam tables, a teacher’s desk and a bookcase. Sadly, Uncle Dennis unexpectedly passed away before the first big event but his efforts with Ricky constructing the bar live on with Dennis’s name featuring on the bar.

Ricky with his new Tiki bar that he built from scratch

The success of Thetford’s first Gin Festival has lead, by popular demand to a follow up – ‘Battle of the Gins, Gt Britain v Europe’ on September 30th. Gin fans will be able try an expanded range of British gins and compare them to a greater collection of European gin. Alongside the CBC based events, Ricky has also catered for weddings and a variety of celebrations. Old Skool Bar is fully licensed and mobile, with a selection of outdoor events taking place in August.

Old Skool Bar - Can you spot your name on the original exam tables that make up the front of the bar?

Since New Year’s Eve, Ricky has not only developed the bar business with the help of his partner Leah but he has also built another 3 counters to serve from. The latest, a Tiki Bar, featuring 1704 two pence pieces on the counter was the star of the July Beach Party. Ricky continued, “I really enjoyed the New Year Eve’s Party and we’ve continued to develop events using the Charles Burrell Centre as a base. There’s a demand in the area and I want to host events where the theme and décor is as important as the temperature of the beer! We’ve put in lots of research, especially for specialist events such as our Gin Festival and really want to create something in Thetford that the larger towns and cities are doing on a weekly basis. We don’t want you to have to travel far to enjoy a unique quality evening.” Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

24

Ricky explained to Karen: “We aim to offer a bespoke service and can develop special drinks for your event, including non alcoholic drinks. For those wanting an alcohol free bar for large teenage parties we can create mocktails, shakes and sodas. We aim to provide the service that you want”.

PRESENTS

The Old Skool Bar parties based at the CBC are a mix of family friendly and 18 year+ events. “When I planned what we wanted to do throughout the year it was clear that some of the parties could be family friendly such as our Barn Dance in May, enabling parents to enjoy an evening out without worrying about babysitters. Other events like the Gin Festival are very much for adults to enjoy without children present. We have something to offer for everyone, we’ve even had a Hen Party join in the fun and then we provided the bar service for the Wedding reception.

Tickets for all Old Skool Bar events are sold through the Leaping Hare Box Office at Thetford’s Great Information Centre provided by. Tickets can either be purchased online or in person at the shop which is opposite Greggs in the main Town Centre. Ricky said “I don’t think many people realise that this information service is provided completely voluntarily with no regular financial support so we are more than happy to support Leaping Hare and encourage everyone to get their tickets there for our events. Also, at our events we normally undertake a fundraising activity of some kind for a local charitable cause. Our Beach Party featured a Treasure Map with proceeds raised going to support the balcony upgrade project at Charles Burrell Centre. It’s our way of giving something back to the community that we grew up in”. Rotarians Hear About TADDS Thetford Rotary Club held a Handover Dinner in The Thomas Paine Hotel where the outgoing President Gary Goodchild passed over the chain of office to the incoming President Brian Farrell.

Free MOT

The evening was enlivened by a talk given by Joanne Lyle Cooper on behalf of the Thetford and District Dementia Support Group (TADDS). It is traditional in the club that during the year when a member’s birthday comes up he -or she- makes a small donation which the President can donate to his favoured charity. This year the donations amounted to £235 and this sum was presented to Joanne to assist in the running costs of the Thetford and District Dementia Support Group.

Lip Talk

Halcyon Days

The skin around the mouth known as the perioral area is one of the first places along with the eyes to show early signs of ageing. We develop small feather lines around the lip line, our laughter lines deepen and we see marionette lines appearing. Reasons for this are several factors but mainly as we age our lips loose volume and it becomes a battle to keep them hydrated and smooth. The lip tissue itself is very thin, only 3-5 layers compared to 16 on the face. Also, there is very little natural protection from oils and melanin hence this delicate area is more prone to premature ageing and extreme, dehydration.

Skin Care & Laser clinic

IPL Hair Removal IPL Skin Rejuvenation Permanent make up Dermalogica Facials Eve Taylor Facials

When you think about our mouth, really it is in use most of the time. The constant action of speaking, eating, drinking through a straw, UV exposure not to mention kissing and pouting in those selfie pics!

Opi Nail Treatments CACI Non Surgical Facelift Venus Freeze

With advances in product innovation, clients can be introduced to specific lip treatments designed to target both the lip tissue and the perioral region to help reduce lines and boost volume. We have a new nightly lip treatment which will firm, hydrate and restore, reducing the signs of lip ageing whilst you are asleep. There is a cooling applicator head which helps with precise application and there is also a lip smoothing DIY technique to focus on massaging laughter and feather lines to give faster results. Combining this homecare with regular professional treatments dramatic results can be seen. Home care is important, such as thoroughly cleaning over the area to remove all traces of lipsticks, glosses and balms using an oil based cleanser, this will help to improve congestion around lip and mouth area. Support your lips and care for them during the day with a protective balm but avoid mineral oils or petroleum based balms as they can confuse the lip tissue and reduce the production of the natural barrier protection. This results in an addiction to the lip balm- without it your lips seem to have none of their own natural protection, are extremely vulnerable and become even more parched and flaky, they may even split and bleed. Try nourishing dry lips with products rich in plant oils such as shea butter, this will restore the natural barrier and also hydrate the lips. Best wishes, Lisa Stallings

Let’s Get More Families Into Golf If you missed our recent Ladies Taster Day in June, why not come along to our Family Day and bring the family with you and see what Feltwell Golf Club can offer you and your family. You won’t need any equipment, just wear some trainers, we can supply clubs and balls and you can enjoy a couple of hours, meeting some of our members and seeing what the game of golf is about. We are always being encouraged to do more exercise and golf can be fitted into any busy schedule be that because of work or school. We are a 9 hole course, so playing a round doesn’t have to take all day either, 9 holes is achievable in under 2 hours, leaving you time to enjoy a drink and some delicious food in the clubhouse. Golf is an ideal opportunity to get some exercise, some fresh air and you can do all of this in really good company. For the juniors we are in the process of creating an Academy Course below our practice area for them to learn the game in safety, so why not come on Sunday 6th August at 2pm and see what we can offer young aspiring golfers. A PGA Professional will join us on the day and she will be able to help, talk to you about the game of golf and give you some tips. We will hold a putting competition for the children to enter to test their skills and there are six Pitch and Putt Holes for them (and you) to practice. Gulls Glorious Gulls I’ve been living in Thetford since 2010, and to me it’s increasingly Walmington-on-Sea. That’s not because I’ve been maxing out on Dad’s Army box sets, but because of the growing gull presence in the town. Many of these birds roost and nest on the flat rooftops of the industrial estates, which provide them with a perfect, predator-free habitat. Two species of gull now breed in the town, the Herring Gull and the Lesser Black-backed Gull. Both are large, white-headed species and have a fearsome reputation in some seaside resorts and cities as noisy predators and scavengers. However, these species are of conservation concern (falling numbers led to the Herring Gull being added to the Birds of Conservation Concern Red List in 2009, while the Lesser Black-backed Gull is on the Amber List), and are struggling to thrive in their natural coastal habitats. In the winter, Thetford attracts rare gulls. Last winter, unusual species included Caspian Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Iceland Gull and Glaucous Gull, some of which come from as far away as the Baltic and Russia.

do this by not leaving leftover food in places gulls can easily access, like on tables outside or next to litter bins, and also by not feeding the gulls in public places. Gulls are fascinating birds. At the BTO, we have used GPS tags to track individual Lesser Black-backed Gulls nesting in East Anglia to as far away as Mauritania in winter! Given how much of our wildlife is in trouble due to human activities, perhaps we in Thetford could set an example, finding a way to live alongside our local gulls rather than engaging in a conflict with them.

Too busy?

For more information on gulls and BTO research, see www.bto.org/gulls-allowed. Viola Ross-Smith, Science Communications Manager, BTO

Should we be encouraging Thetford’s gulls or trying to control them before they too are regarded as pests? In my opinion, our gulls currently co-exist with us harmoniously. They are not nesting on people’s homes, so residents aren’t being woken by loud calls, or having to worry about birds trying to protect their eggs or young (gulls only act aggressively when they perceive danger to their offspring). Thetford’s gulls are still primarily seeking food from outside of town too. However, this could change, so we should take steps to keep nuisance behaviour at bay. Individual gulls learn to specialise on particular feeding methods, so we mustn’t encourage birds to specialise on sandwiches and ice creams being enjoyed by Thetfordians in the summer months. Cat Collar Safety Tips

4. Check what is attached to your cat’s collar. Bells and tags are good for identification and to warn wildlife, but cats claws can become trapped in the attachment rings. If you are choosing a collar with a bell or tag, make sure the groove in the attachment ring is wide to prevent cat’s claws from becoming trapped.

The safety and security of our pets is always of paramount importance. Cats can be microchipped as well as dogs, but wearing a tagged collar lets anyone know that the cat is owned, and not a stray. More and more frequently the Cats Protection are receiving reports of cats entangling themselves in their own collars. Some are getting front legs caught through unsafe collars when attempting to remove them, usually because the collar has been incorrectly fitted and come loose. Furthermore when cats are out and about unsafe collars can become caught or trapped on fences, gate posts or branches, leaving the cat incapable of escape, this can be very dangerous. Nowadays collars come in a range of fashionable designs and colours, but in reality safety should be the priority. Here are some tips to ensure that the collar your cat is wearing is safe:

5. Avoid collars with elasticated inserts as these are far more likely to result in cat collar accidents. Avoid using flea collars that can give a bad reaction to cats. Instead use the veterinary ‘spot on’ flea products, which are effective and safe to use. Cats collars should be used for identification purposes only. They do not need to wear a collar until they are old enough to go outside at about 6 months of age.Cats wearing collars is a personal preference. The photograph is of a cat who has sustained a bad injury to her underarm from getting her front leg through the collar, which was obviously fitted too loosely. This type of injury is very difficult to heal because it is on a joint which is constantly moving.

1. Check that your cat’s collar is fitted correctly. So long as there is enough give to slide two fingers underneath the collar, it is not too tight to be uncomfortable, but any looser and your pet risks becoming a victim of a collar-related injury.

For help or advice or if you need assistance with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. Rita Thompson

2. Continually check your cat’s collar, especially with younger cats, as your pet will grow. Keeping an eye on the tightness of your cat’s collar means that it will not become too small and uncomfortable and your cat will be less likely to try and remove it. 3. A ‘quick release’ collar is the best option. These are collars fitted with a catch that releases when the collar is pulled on with enough force. This allows your cat to break free if they become trapped. Best to test these collars first, as they are built to withstand different levels of pressure applied to the catch. The best are those which will withstand a moderate force as any less could end in your cat constantly losing their collar.

Ahoy! Thetford Sings For The Mary Rose A delighted audience enjoyed the second summer concert by Thetford Singers featuring Admirals Academy Singers. Ahoy! Sing for the Mary Rose was written by Alexander L’Estange and commissioned to celebrate the opening of the new Mary Rose Museum in Portsmouth. (Thetford Singers pictured below).

We look forward to welcoming old and new buyers & sellers

Sunday Car Boot Sale & Cafe open from 8am—1pm

Almost 472 years to the day after the ship sank, the Carnegie Room was filled with music and singing from 42 adults and 27 children. An uplifting version of Greensleeves demonstrated how well both singing groups work together; it is always a joy to see Thetford Singers with Admirals Academy Singers. Thanks to the incredible work of Fiona Barnett the children fit seamlessly into the performances and it is obvious that they enjoy every minute of performing. Chris Parsons, Musical Director and Conductor and the five piece band took the audience on a journey. At times we were back in the reign of Henry VIII, and then we were jostled by rowdy sailors singing sea shanties before being soothed by gentle choral influences. Thetford Singers themselves continue to go from strength to strength, demonstrating their versatility with every performance. Speaking about Ahoy! Chris said, “It’s been a great piece of music to work with. Thank you to the children for their unbelievably amazing singing”. After the thrilling finale of ‘Up she rises!’ the audience were encouraged to join in ‘The Water is Wide’ as the encore. Finally closing the evening, Liz Hosegood thanked the audience for their support, “This is a community choir for people who love to sing, hopefully some of these children will be Thetford Singers in the future and perhaps we might have a few new members in the audience.” For more info on joining Thetford Singers or to find out about upcoming performances www.thetfordsingers.org.uk

10% OFF All Tints in August

This year’s Summer Social event saw the group go head to head in an action packed game of laser tag. The group headed to Battle Stations Activities Centre in Snetterton, and led by the centre’s Lee Belcher, the session took place in their outdoor ‘Battle Town’ zone in the searing summer heat! In the two games played during the course of the hour members were able to work on improving their team building skills in both games. The blue team consisting of Jack, Jake and Calum worked well together with a strong strategy but were unable to beat the red team who dominated throughout consisting of Beth, Alex, Ellen and Ben - only for Ben to admit at the end of the session that he has previous experience!

Tax Clinic By Colin Chamberlain HMRC’s New Tax Rules Are Too Complicated For Its Own Computer Systems Do you remember the TV adverts a few years ago which were aimed at encouraging tax payers to file their self-assessment tax returns? I recall the tag line ‘tax needn’t be taxing’. Those of us who are ‘in the know’ realise that this clearly is not correct in many cases, particularly as the UK has the longest tax code in the entire world and it keeps getting longer and longer as each Budget comes and goes. In recent times, successive pronouncements have clearly demonstrated why the ‘tax needn’t be taxing’ tag line was dropped. Most people will be aware that everyone has a personal income tax allowance – ie an amount of income that they can have before income tax is due. For the year ended 5 April 2017 this amount was £11,000. The 2016/17 tax year also saw the introduction of a savings allowance of £1,000 for basic rate taxpayers (£500 for higher rate taxpayers) together with a dividend allowance of £5,000. And then there is the zero per cent savings rate of income tax that applies to up to £5,000 of savings income as long as your non-savings income is no more than £16,000. Confused? Well, HMRC’s software technicians certainly were. Unfortunately they, not entirely unsurprisingly, failed to properly take into account all the possible nuances and interactions between the various rates and allowances. As a result HMRC’s self-assessment tax software has been programmed incorrectly, leading to a potential income tax overcharge of up to £1,000. There are three main groups of taxpayers affected: 1. Those with total income made up of savings and non-savings income over £32,000 of which the non-savings income is between £11,000 and £16,000; 2. Those with non-dividend income of £27,000 to

Colin Chamberlain from Lovewell Blake

£32,000 plus dividends which take their total income to over £145,000; and 3. Higher rate taxpayers with interest income of more than £500 but who would be additional rate taxpayers if qualifying deductions were ignored. Taxpayers who fall within these parameters and file their tax returns online will be overcharged to tax. HMRC’s current answer to this problem is to add these taxpayers to an already long list of types of people who are excluded from filing online. Therefore HMRC’s advice is to file using a paper return. The filing deadline for paper returns in these circumstances will be extended from 31 October 2017 to 31 January 2018. Unfortunately anyone such as professional firms, who use commercial software other than HMRC’s own software are also likely to be affected as all commercial software must be designed to fit HMRC’s programming. The very latest news on this is that HMRC may be developing a fix to this problem which might be available in around October 2017. None of this appeared to bode too well with Making Tax Digital for Business (‘MTDfB’) seemingly just around the corner. But HMRC has now very recently announced a significant delay with regard to the introduction of MTDfB together with a complete streamlining of the proposed system that I described in my article in the May 2017 edition of About Thetford. If you would like to discuss these issues or any other tax issue with Colin he can be contacted on 01842 755032 or at c.chamberlain@lovewell-blake.co.uk Disclaimer: Please note that this article is provided for your information only. Clubs compete at Summer Tournament A local football club is celebrating after hosting a Summer tournament attended by 90 teams from across Norfolk and Suffolk. Thetford Bulldogs FC held their 3rd annual summer tournament at their Euston Estate home game pitches over the first weekend in July. Speaking about the tournament, Club Secretary Kirsty Turner said, “It was a wonderful weekend seeing some great teams all play football and having fun. I’d like to say a massive thank you to all our refs, teams and supporters that came over the weekend.” The tournament featured games from U6 up to U15. Thetford Bulldogs were delighted with the success of their U9 Marvels team, runners up against Morley Youth and U10 Thetford Bulldogs Purple. Other local success came from Thetford Town U12, runners up against Wymondham. The U15 teams were fielded by girls with Blofield winning the final against Tavernham Tigers. Kirsty continued, “Thank you to Warburtons, all the Thetford Bulldog coaches and their families for all their help making this tournament happen, especially those who helped with the arranging, setting up, running the event and of course clearing up.” Through the Tesco Bags for Cash initiative the club now has the chance to raise some additional funding for some much needed portable floodlights, which would enable all year round evening training. “Please do support this great cause and help us when you go shopping; we would like to thank Tesco for this fantastic opportunity.”

Thetford Bulldogs are now looking for players for their new U16 girl’s team. Girls in Years 9 and 10 from September are welcome to come and join in the fun and perhaps take on Blofield and Taverham Tigers at next year’s tournament. Thetford Bulldogs continue to go from strength to strength, and are continuously improving their facilities. Recently they were donated 38 rolls of 3G pitch, but needed to get them to Thetford from Norwich. With the help of RG Carter they are currently at the Charles Burrell Centre waiting to be laid. It took RG Carter 9 return journeys to get the 2.1 tonne rolls back to Thetford. That’s an incredible 79.8 tonnes in total! Once the pitch is laid it will provide an extra all year round training area and the local community will also be able to hire the space through the CBC. Thetford Bulldogs are also looking for players for their mixed teams,

Johnnie Ellis (driver) and Marc Fowler (co driver) spent Saturday completing a thorough recce of the stage to make the notes for the weekend. With the recce completed and the help of Simon Stoodley (Senior Tech), the team were ready to hit the tarmac on Sunday. Team TI had a flying start to Stage 1 and Johnnie's smooth handling of the Mitsubishi persisted throughout the day. The results revealed that the crew had managed to climb the leaderboard from 5th position in Stage 1 to 3rd fastest car overall. With such confident and effortless driving, they held onto the title of third fastest car whilst also being awarded first British crew. On top of this fantastic achievement, Team TI were also named the first British Crew to ever finish in the Top 3 in the history of the rally since its debut in 1979. After collecting their trophy at the awards ceremony, the team headed out for a celebratory dinner with their families. A brilliant weekend was had by all, many Congratulations to Team TI! Exercising - Where To Start? For a lot of us life is pretty hectic. We all have our own responsibilities; whether it be picking the kids up from school, challenging work deadlines, renewing our mortgage, getting the car through the M.O.T, all of which can leave us stressed and causing us to neglect our health. Ask yourself, how often do you miss a meal or plan exercise which just never happens? It’s so easily done but what we need to remember is, without our health, it’s all for nothing.

If you have any questions or would like some advice please contact me at tigerfitnessclub@hotmail.com Richard

So, where to start to make a difference? Planning! Forward planning will help you achieve and reach targets set by yourself; it will also help to build a steady routine and ultimately make you feel better. If you’re not training currently and you are not sure where to start, it may be beneficial to chat to someone who knows what they’re doing. Many people in the fitness world, including myself, welcome any questions and can advise on an appropriate course of action. If getting started seems a little daunting, get the Google search bar up and start researching for yourself. Google, as well as YouTube have made it so much easier for us to broaden our fitness knowledge and they are awesome tools to help get started in a comfortable environment.
