Dad’s Army Royal Mail Stamps As most people will know, 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the first ever showing of a Dad’s Army episode. 25th July 1968 to be precise. Royal Mail regularly produce commemorative and collectible stamps with recent ones including ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘Royal Academy of Art’, ‘Votes for Women’ and ‘Star Wars’. Stamps are produced in a variety of packages and prices from first day covers, presentation packs, framed sets and occasionally some that have been signed by those depicted. Once Royal Mail had decided to celebrate 50 Years of Dad’s Army, the press manager Natasha Aviyor began searching the internet for links to Dad’s Army to decide how best to advertise and promote the range of stamps. She came across the museum in Cage Lane, Thetford and read up about the subject, then realising the series was filmed in Thetford. Natasha said, “I was wondering how I could use the location to promote the new stamps and when I was at home one day, I saw an edition of Four in a Bed filmed in Thetford and using some of the museum’s platoon and that seemed like a wonderful opportunity.”

After contacting the chairman Stuart Wright, Royal Mail’s PR team and photographers arrived in Thetford on 2nd June spending several hours taking photos and a video using the platoon and Jones’ van as a backdrop for some oversized stamps, which were carefully kept under wraps. Some of the platoon were also recorded doing interviews and telling how Dad’s Army encourages people to become involved and how it draws so many visitors to Thetford every year. The Dad’s Army stamps were formally launched on 26th June and the filming photos taken by Royal Mail at the museum is regularly promoted on Social Media and on the BBC. The museum is expecting a supply of stamps to sell at the time of writing this article and many people have already visited the museum trying to purchase them.

Additionally, the Dad’s Army Museum in Thetford has now been open for ten years so this year marks a double Dad’s Army celebration. The museum continues to be open every Saturday from 10am until 3pm and on Tuesdays in the school holidays. As well as there being many articles and pictures about the series, the museum boasts a tunic and helmet worn by warden Hodges, a blouse of James Beck and the clothes worn by Catherine Zeta Jones in the 2016 film. The Marigolds tea room sells tea, coffee and soft drinks and cakes made to war time recipes made by our volunteers. The museum also owns the original Jones van used throughout the series which is normally housed in the Charles Burrell museum. Visitors to the museum this year as part of the celebrations include Thetford’s Ruby Sisters, 40’s singer Jayne Darling, the Jeff Short Band and the Apple Blossom girls. Birmingham’s Steve Llilly who has produced brilliant art work for the museum will also be joining us at the museum and at the 1940’s event in King’s Lynn, where he will be unveiling his latest drawing of the platoon and the additional main characters. Another very busy year for the Dad’s Army team which attracts some 10,000 visitors to the museum every year.

Out and About Thetford

New President for Rotarians Karen was delighted to be invited to Thetford Rotary Club for the annual Handover Dinner as the outgoing President handed the reins to President Elect John Gallen. Brian said that his standout moment of the year was the formation of the satellite group, known as Rotary @ CBC, “I can’t believe how quickly the year has gone. I would like to thank all the members for their support over the year and John for engaging with the idea of new members. It’s really nice to see the club as a whole supporting John and the satellite club; it’s been a period of gradual change over the year.” Brian also spoke about his delight that Thetford Rotary had sponsored a new kit for John Gallen is welcomed as new Thetford U12 football team, the Old Boys Night that he had President by Brian Farrell thoroughly enjoyed and sadness at the passing of one of the original founding members earlier this year, Brian Boughton. In his new President address John told of his plans for the coming year; “The biggest thing I’m involved in is the club development programme, we’ve made the club less formal, the dress code more relaxed and produced some brochures to attract new members. A new website is being developed and it will be great to end the year with an increase in numbers.” The Thetford Club had been in existence for over 60 years and has raised funds for a variety of different charities alongside the Rotary International Charity. They have supported many different causes over the years and Brian was delighted to announce that his birthday box collection resulted with £220 being donated to the Lend with Care fund, an initiative of poverty fighting charity Care International UK. Karen is involved in the Rotary@CBC and thanked the members for their support on behalf of the new group, “I’m delighted to see how much support the new group has from Thetford Rotary Club, it’s exciting to see how the new group will develop and how we can work together.” For more information about Thetford Rotary Club or to join please visit www.thetfordrotary.org.uk An Evening with Sartinder Sartaaj As part of the Festival of Thetford & Punjab, international Sufi

star and festival patron Satinder Sartaaj hosted an evening in conversation with an audience of invited guests and the Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Roy Brame. Alongside his fame as a performer, Sartaaj is otherwise known as Dr Satinder Sartaaj and has a strong academic background as a researcher and lecturer at Punjab University, Chandigarh. Talking about Maharajah Duleep Singh Sartaaj said, “The Maharajah was not considered a hero as he didn’t die by the sword or a bullet, if he had his picture would have been in every Gurdwara. After The Black Prince movie every Sikh or Punjabi considers him a good person.” Sartaaj then went on to to tell the audience that he had had the opportunity to visit the

interior of Elveden Hall for the first time despite having visited Thetford regularly since 2010. Interviewer Manjit Thandi then asked Sartaaj about his work as a Sufi poet, songwriter and academic “Sufi is a combination of many things but it is not a religion. It’s about love.” Sartaaj continued to discuss his work, where he finds inspiration for his song writing and his thoughts on humanity. “Be happy with what you‘ve got, start living and be caring to the people around you.” Throughout the evening Sartaaj entertained the audience by singing some of the songs he talked about, reducing some to tears. “I think we all must live for each other, do not be self centred, when you live for someone else you will surrender yourself. Love everybody; try to feel the pain of everybody. The beauty of humanity is that he or she can cry for someone else.” Copies of The Black Prince DVD are available priced £10.95 from Thetford’s Great Information Centre, 20 King Street Thetford www.leapinghare.org.uk Summer Concert Success The queue ran from the Carnegie Room round the corner to the Market Place as an eager audience waited for the Thetford Singers’ annual Summer Concert. Thetford Voices and Admirals Academy Singers joined Thetford Singers creating a choir of almost 100 singers for A night at the Musicals. This proved a very popular theme with the performance selling out despite a number of events and activities going on in the town on the same evening. The audience was treated to a whistle-stop trip around the world with songs linked to Africa, England, USA and France. Despite Thetford Singers continuing to surpass themselves with each performance, Admirals Academy Singers stole the show this time with beautifully performed songs form Matilda the Musical, The Greatest Showman and an Oliver! medley. Phantom of the Opera was a clear favourite of Thetford Singers who sang beautifully filling the Carnegie Room with beautiful harmonies. 13 young people from Thetford Voices, Quire of Voices were introduced by John Weeks and entertained the audience with a musicals mash-up during their showcase. Finally the performance was rounded off with all 3 choirs coming together to perform a foot tapping medley from Oliver! and Les Misérables. It was wonderful to see how the Admirals Academy Singers were enjoying singing with the older choirs. Speaking about the performance Sue Garland said, “Tonight was a first for us, a year ago we joined with Thetford Voices to encourage young people to sing. We have our bursary scheme available and are accepting applications now. We came together for the first time this evening at 5pm; all the choirs have practiced separately as has the band. We hope you enjoyed the performance as much as we have.” Sue then went on to thank Musical Director Chris Parsons for his work directing the performance, John Weeks, Polina Sosnina, Fiona Barnett and Sally Bauer for their work with Thetford Voices and Admirals Academy Singers. For more information on the bursary scheme or an application form please contact suegarland@outlook.com For information on Thetford Singers and up coming performances visit www.thetfordsingers.org.uk

Can You Help Thetford Foodbank? Who in 2018 genuinely needs such a thing as a Foodbank? Sadly, all too many of us at one time or another discover that we are all too close to needing this help. How long would we each be able to keep a roof over our heads and food on the table if our next income payment was wiped out, or seriously reduced? And if that were on-going? Sickness (especially mid- to long-term with frequent travel for treatment), inability of the employer to pay, relationship break down, a drying up of work, bereavement, delays when benefits are changed, an unexpected large bill, and myriad other reasons can throw us into crisis. Foodbank enables there to be a line of help while the situation is stabilised – a neighbourly hand-up in time of need. We could be forgiven for thinking it’s all doom and gloom, but time and time again people tell us how their spirits have been lifted when they realise that there are others out there who care enough to give.

As often happens in early Summer, our stocks are getting pretty low and we are needing help to build stocks to cover families for the summer holidays and keep stocks at a good level to be prepared for when the switch over to Universal Credit happens in September. There is a list of standard items that go into our emergency food boxes:

About Thetford Editor - Terry Jermy with some of the items donated to Thetford Foodbank

• Also needed - breakfast cereal, tinned meat, pasta sauce, instant mash, tinned fruit, biscuits, snacks, tinned sponge pudding, custard, sugar. • We currently have lots of - pasta, rice, soup and baked beans. We can also receive any unopened, in-date, nonperishable food and other basic items (toiletries, loo roll, baby basics, pet food, cleaning products) that we would struggle to do without. Items can be dropped off at the Foodbank (Charles Burrell Centre, Staniforth Road IP24 3LH) during sessions (Friday: 7:30pm - 8:30pm, Saturday 10:30am - 12 noon, Mondays 12 to 1:30pm), or the CBC reception staff very kindly receive donations on our behalf when our volunteers are not there. Sincerest thanks for your continued generous support Thetford (And Watton, Brandon and Attleborough too!). on behalf of us all at Foodbank.

• Urgently needed as almost out - tinned tomatoes, tinned fish, tinned veg, tinned rice pudding, UHT milk, MF Cleaners AD 05.18.qxp_Layout 1 09/05/2018 09:55 longlife juice, teabags and instant coffee.

This month’s Thetford Face is Archy Stannard. Aged 16, Archy is making waves in the world of clay pigeon shooting with trials for the England and GB teams on the horizon. Archy is also a member of Thetford Town Boxing Club and a lifeguard at Breckland Leisure Centre. How did you become interested in shooting and when did you start? I took the sport up around 3 years ago when I was 13. Before that I used cardboard boxes with a 4 10 gun when I was 6 or 7 years old. My grandparents have been involved in shooting for a long time. My Granddad shoots for England and GB, he was the GB FITASC Captain once. My Nan was a British Champion at Skeet. My Granddad suggested that I had a go as he always wanted me to shoot, so I had a go and got the bug! I shoot at Eriswell Lodge near Lakenheath. Which forms of clay pigeon shooting do you take part in? My main discipline is Skeet, I am looking forward to trialling for the England and GB teams next. In August I’ll be at the British Open Skeet Championship in Northampton. My second discipline is FITASC (part of the ‘Federation Internationale de Tir Aux Sportives de Chasse’ based in Paris. FITASC, is an international form of Sporting Clays and enjoys a following the world over. It is said to be the ultimate challenge in clay target shooting). It is the harder of the two disciplines. Although I have 3 different guns, I mainly use my Krerghoff K80.

Archy with his Grandad, John Dyson when he first started shooting at Eriswell Lodge

What kind of success have you had so far? I compete in the Juniors group (up to 21 years old). I have competed in Holland at the Dutch Grand Prix twice, in 2016 I came 5th in my class and in 2017 I came 3rd. There are around 80 competitors in my class. In 2017 I competed in France and came 4th. In 2017 I became the Norfolk County Champion at Skeet and FITASC. Recently I shot my first 100/100, a few days after my first 99/100 which I’m really chuffed with. Have you been surprised with your success as you have only been shooting for a short while? I find it a mental challenge as well as a physical one.

Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 12

A round is 25 targets, I don’t talk to anyone whilst I’m shooting or waiting to shoot. I just concentrate on the targets and what I need to do. I’ve learnt not to fall to pieces if I miss a target early on I just keep my head together and keep going. Shooting is a very friendly community; everyone wants you to do well.

You are also part of Thetford Town Boxing Club, what part does boxing play in your life? I love boxing, it’s my hobby and I really enjoy it. I love sport generally but when I saw a new club had started up in Thetford I wanted to join straight away. I had my first fight at the Home Show last year, which I really enjoyed. Fortunately the boxing season has finished now, this time of year I’m really busy with shooting but I’ll be back to boxing in the autumn. I’ve played cricket for Thetford Town Cricket Club in the past. You’ve only just taken your GCSEs, what ambitions do you have for the future? My main ambition is to be part of the England and GB teams. I want to compete in the British, European and then World Championships at some point. In September I am due to go to City College to study Sports Science after which I want to join the RAF as a physical training instructor. What’s the best thing about living in Thetford? I’m close to all my family and as I’m really an outdoor person, I love the countryside. I’d rather be out on my bike than on a computer game! You can follow Archy’s progress on Instagram: archy_shooting For sponsorship enquiries please email: gemmastannard1977@gmail.com

Archy at a competiton in Holland last year.

Do you have sponsors for your shooting? Shooting is extremely expensive, not only the guns but the cartridges. I have help from Essex Gun and City & Guilds Qualified with over 20 years experience Ambassador Services who are also based in Essex. PLUMBING • HEATING • BATHROOMS I am now at a stage where I do need to get some more Affordable Kitchens Supplied and Fitted sponsors so I can continue to compete. I would really with free 3D drawings like to get a local sponsor so I can promote Thetford when I compete. Unfortunately there isn’t funding for Please Contact Nick White for advice and a no hassle estimate shooting, most competitors pay their own costs through Telephone: 01842 750505 • Mobile: 07737 044700 MTS Electrical AD.qxp_Layout 1 24/11/2017 sponsorship or by QP working. Dry Weather Causes Challenges

Garden & Allotment Club News - August August is usually reckoned to be a dry month but after the weeks of rainless weather in June and July I rather hope at least for showers in the next few weeks. It is really noticeable on the allotments where plots that received lots of manure and compost over winter have held the moisture and so plants look healthy and green. Where the soil is poor, plants are short and parched looking, needing watering daily. Some deeper rooted crops cope better than others and I had a good result from my gooseberries. It is usual to prune gooseberry bushes after they crop but you can make life easier for yourself if you cut out those awkward lower branches and then take off the berries. Guaranteed there will be fewer gouges from the thorns that way. With regard to allotments, I have to admit that I have had letters from the Council about my failings as an allotment-keeper and I don’t know anyone who hasn’t. This doesn’t seem the place to get into the issues but I would recommend visiting the council or writing in detail about any matter where you feel you are acting reasonably but are somehow offending against the regulations. If your raspberry canes have shrivelled up in the heat or are starting to die back after fruiting you can cut the canes out to encourage fresh growth for next year. In the unlikely event of a glut of raspberries, a good way of preserving them without too much fuss is to open freeze them on trays and then store them in bags to use – such a good taste in the winter months. Alternatively if you have a few sad fruits from a variety of bushes, you could cook them altogether and freeze the mix to make a summer pudding later. The poor old horse chestnut trees are now quite brown as the dryness aggravates the damage done by the larvae of the horse chestnut leaf miner moth. The tree originates from the Balkans and has been widely used as a park specimen in temperate parts of the world. In WWI the conkers were collected in Britain to process the starch into cordite. This did not work very well but at least meant that precious food crops did not get diverted for this use. More peaceably, because the trees are shallow rooted they were planted to provide shade to keep beer cellars cool in Germany – and hence the development of beer gardens! If it is continuing dry, in the flower garden the priority for rain water from the butt is to keep Camellias and Rhododendrons well supplied this month. This is because they are forming the flower buds for next spring. If you have to use tap water, a dose of

The Nunnery Arch with grass a distinct shade of yellow - like much of Thetford currently

sequestrated iron would help counteract the calcium in our water supply. It is also essential to let tap water stand for some time in buckets to let the sun draw off the chlorine before you put it into fish ponds. Our water supply is very pure and healthy but does not suit everything. In the veg patch, it is a good plan to pinch out climbing beans when they reach the top of their supports; this should encourage side shoots and keep the crop coming. Pick beans and courgettes young to get the best flavour and tenderness – and this too should encourage more fruiting. It is also time to pinch out the top of tomato plants. The plan with standard tomatoes is to leave 5 or 6 trusses to ripen before the cooler weather and shorter days make the plants stop trying. Strange to think that this essential element of our diet was considered poisonous or at least unfit for eating when it was first introduced! No evening meeting this month but the BBQ is on Saturday 18th at 4pm on the London Road site. Be aware also that the main show is on September 1st – see more details in your handbook. There is a club site on Facebook and the Leaping Hare can give more details of the show schedule to any non-members who would like to exhibit. Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

Wretham Lodge Hosts Evening Out The annual Summer Party at Wretham Lodge drew 95 people from the village and other local areas and made a profit of over £1,300 for St Ethelbert’s Church funds. Organised by church members, its guests were able to wander through the magnificent grounds of Wretham Lodge, the former rectory and the home of Gordon Alexander and Ian Salter for nearly two decades. The two of them mingled with guests on a sunny evening where the gardens were in magnificent condition. A raffle organised by Sharon Ford produced over £270 of the total profit on the evening, where wine provided by the hosts and the usual large cold buffet was enjoyed by everyone. At the end of the evening, church warden Eileen Kitson thanked those attending, those who had provided much of the food and, especially, their hosts.

Birds And Weather Whilst many of us might be enjoying the current run of hot weather there will be those that aren’t, this will also be the case for our wildlife. It is easy to see the negative impact that the drying out of a pond will have on the animals that live in or around it but less clear how weather extremes might affect other animals. For our birds there will be winners and losers. Some of our summer visitors, birds like Swifts and Swallows will be taking advantage of the abundant airborne insects that a warm spell brings and, even though they had a late start this year they could be on for a good breeding season, we will know better towards the end of the year. However, for our Blackbirds things might not be so rosy. Blackbirds are earthworm specialists and as the soils become dryer the worms move deeper underground and out of reach. This comes at a time when there are very few berries about too. During the winter when the ground is too hard to forage for earthworms Blackbirds feed almost exclusively on berries. Right now there will be some hungry Blackbirds out there. Seed-eating birds such as sparrows and finches might also benefit from the warm weather, grasses have set seed early and should be providing more than enough food, perfect timing for birds like Goldfinches and Linnets, and Yellowhammers too. During the next month or so waders from the Arctic will be heading south through Britain and for these birds the long run of hot weather will have provided the muddy water edges that they need to feed. The flood on the eastern edge of Barnham Cross Common may well host the odd Green, Common and Wood Sandpiper, along with post-breeding groups of Lapwing and Sullivan 1-8thduring Advert_Layout 1 weeks. 14/12/2016 08:28 Oystercatchers the next few Kingfishers will also benefit from the lower water levels; small fish

are easier to catch in shallow water and small fish are essential food for young Kingfishers during the first few weeks of their life. The hot weather could not have come at a better time for what is arguably our most colourful bird. The beast from the east seems to have hit Kingfishers hard. Access to these small fish may help them recover. During hot, dry weather birds need access to clean drinking water, and if Blackbirds are regular visitors you can help them by putting out water soaked sultanas – be aware that sultanas are poisonous to dogs though. Thetford Rotary Club – A Short History The Rotary Club of Thetford was founded in 1954 with guidance from District (a committee formed from all of the clubs, chiefly in Norfolk and Suffolk) and advice from the Diss club, which became Thetford’s “mother”. After some months of initial ‘interim’ meetings, the club was formally chartered in 1955 at which time there were 21 members, most of whom lived and worked in the town centre. Several were shopkeepers – a butcher, a baker (but no candlestick maker), a chemist, a tobacconist, a TV retailer, and the manager of the Electricity showroom; also, a Doctor, a Solicitor, a bank manager, a printer, a garage proprietor, a newspaper reporter, several local authority staff including the town clerk, and a selection of other businessmen. Once the club was underway various committees were formed, as was normal in Rotary, each having different responsibilities. Probably the most active has always been the Community Service Committee, which in the early days organised assistance to local people, including transport to social clubs for the visually impaired and disabled, and paying for minibus transport to local hospitals for relatives of patients. After some years, and much fund raising by the club, jointly with Thetford Round Table, a new minibus was purchased at a cost of £1,047(!) and handed over to Norfolk County Council Welfare Committee. Fund raising by this committee included, for several years, a Donkey Derby and Fete (jointly with Round Table) which raised large sums of money for the club’s charity funds, and indirectly for a large number of local organisations who took stalls at the fete. Other fund-raising over several years was for the construction of a swimming pool for the town. The funds eventually went towards the cost of the original swimming pool at the sports centre and speeded its construction by quite a few years.

The International Committee worked to create a relationship with RAF Lakenheath and thereby to improve International relations; the club also developed a relationship with a Rotary Club in Denmark, which lasted for a number of years, and gave rise to a number of long-lasting friendships. During crises for refugees from Hungary, and more especially from Uganda, the club assisted with preparation of housing. Socially, this committee organised long weekend trips for members and partners to a variety of countries, which continues to the present day. The Vocational Service Committee was active – early in the club’s life it organised careers exhibition and created a register of over 60 activities in the town for the benefit of new arrivals. In later years this and the Community Service Committee merged. The Club Service Committee has always had the responsibility of managing the day to day running of the club, planning meetings (frequently with speakers), social functions, and not least, looking after membership. Rotary has now served communities locally and worldwide for over 100 years and as it adapts to social and media changes of the 21st century the same culture of friendship and support for those less fortunate is unchanged. If you would like to know more about the history of Thetford Rotary Club or info about becoming a member contact John Gallen on 01953 887191 Thetford Rotary have recently launched a new ‘satellite’ group - Rotary @ CBC This is a more informal group with shorter meetings, held fortnightly at the Charles Burrell Centre, visit ‘Rotary @ CBC’ on Facebook for more info

Recently the group spent a day in Southwold, which was very enjoyable in this beautiful weather. The days are organised so that the members can go off to do their own thing Other trips planned to visit are the Pensthorpe Nature Reserve, the Hippodrome in Great Yarmouth, this is a circus without animals, Hampton Court, a Boat trip next month in Woodbridge also Burghley House (National Trust) which is well worth a visit with stunning gardens/ house. Sadly this free resource has not been best served by planners, nor has there been investment in a way that would realise its potential. Stuart Wright, who serves on the Town Council aims to change this, as he clearly outlined in his talk to Probus Club members at their July monthly meeting. The ambitious plans stem from an in-depth study that examined ways to develop and improve the waterways to benefit the whole community. One of the key aims is to make the river navigable for boats from Thetford to Brandon, as it once was in the past. This would open up a whole network of waterways to many other parts of the country.

Mr Wright doesn’t underestimate the scale of task. He explained that investment to the tune of millions of pounds would be needed and support for the project has to be won from Breckland District Council, the Environment Agency and the Forestry Commission. He added that it is a struggle to galvanise these organisations into any positive action, but knowing the benefits that will result from a vibrant and attractive waterway, he is determined to press ahead. While the ultimate aim is to install four locks over the nine mile stretch to Brandon plus fish passes and many other amenities, the river is already being used by more people for paddle boarding, canoeing and kayaking, and reinstating riverside paths, complemented by features such as tree sculptures, will give access to lovely parts of Breckland encouraging more local people and visitors to enjoy it. He pointed out that local support and volunteers are very important, too, along with efforts to reduce litter contamination of these beautiful rivers. A minute’s silence was held at the meeting as a mark of respect for member Mike Kew who has sadly died.

A Festival to Remember Wow what a festival! For two incredibly busy weeks Thetford has welcomed visitors from near and far as we showcased the cultural connections that link Thetford with the Punjab. The Punjab is a state in Northern India, once ruled by the mighty Maharajah Ranjit Singh, his son Maharajah Duleep Singh was the last ruler of the Punjab and eventually settled in England residing at Elveden Hall in the 19th century. This year has seen the 125th anniversary of the death of Maharajah Duleep Singh and to mark the occasion a two week festival was developed by Essex Cultural Diversity Project and organisations from the town such as Thetford Town Council, Leaping Hare and Ancient House Museum. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and in partnership with Norfolk Museum Service, Norfolk Library Service and Norfolk Arts Service, the festival has been a huge success. Thetford has featured not only in the local East Anglian press but also on television and digital TV such as the Sikh Channel which is watched worldwide. Such was the importance of the festival that Sufi superstar Satinder Sartaaj, the Festival Patron flew in on route to the Canadian leg of his latest worldwide tour. Well known members of the British Sikh community have taken part in a number of events. We were all fed amazing Punjabi food cooked by Paul Babra from Canterbury Curry Club at the Thomas Paine Hotel. Film director Gurinder Chadha, best known for films, Bend It Like Beckham and Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging opened the festival and was hosted by About Thetford’s very own Karen-Emma White. Thetford Town Cricket Club entertained spectators with an afternoon of T20 cricket, playing for the Maharajah Ranjit Singh Trophy against a Sikh team from Gravesend. Ancient House Museum hosted a number of events and activities including the launch of a Duleep Singh special exhibition featuring the Singh Twins ‘Casualty of War’ painting which is on loan until December. They also had a fantastic interactive screen created by the Sikh

Museum Initiative using new technology to interpret Sikh relics. The museum hosted a series of family activity days each Saturday of the festival and a puppet workshop. 56 ladies from Gravesend Gurdwara made the return journey to be reunited with their new friends from Ancient House knitting and spinning groups. At Thetford Library, authors Yasmin Alibhai Brown, Sathnam Sangera, Shrabani Basu and poet Daljit Nagra delighted their audience with stories relating to their books and their experiences as migrant families. Kaleigh Garrod, Manager of Thetford Library said she had never seen so many people in the library for an event as over 100 people gathered to hear comedian, presenter and writer Hardeep Singh Kohli in conversation with Sikh historian Peter Bance. Thetford put its best musical foot forward with a Folk ‘n’ Curry night, showcasing local performers and a little bit of Dhol drumming! The riverside area not only provided the perfect backdrop for world renowned Sitar performer Jonathan Mayer, but also Bollywood dancing and the fantastic Festival Finale. Starting with a whirl of colour and noise from the street procession, this was a day to remember with a perfect blend of culture from both Thetford and the Punjab. Bhangra Dancers joined Folk Dancers in a cultural mash up, Morris Dancers, Dohl Drummers and Gatka demonstrations entertained the crowds on the green whilst two special films were previewed in The Light Cinema.

Photographic Club Brandon & District Photographic Club again took a stand at Weeting Engine Rally at the end of July. We had many prints on display depicting past Rallies and is always a golden opportunity for our Club Members to show off their photographic skills to a wider audience. Taking stands at local Fairs is a chance for members of the public to talk to us about the Club and what we get up to between September and May! Brandon & District Photographic Club is not all about Competitions and pitting one member against the other in a bid to win that all elusive (to some!) 1st Place, it’s about learning about photography and the skills involved in taking that outstanding shot. We hold several Workshops and Tuition Evenings throughout the year looking at Portraiture, Macro, Mono and Night Photography to name but a few and always encourage our members to stretch and improve their skills. Why not come along in September, meet us and see for yourselves just what you can achieve.

Everyone is welcome to come along, meet some of our members and get a feel for what is on offer in the coming year. The first meeting is ‘Meet and Greet’ where you can learn some basics of mounting photographs and discuss with us what it is you would like to learn about in photography during the year.

Our first meeting this year will be on Wednesday 5th September from 7.30pm in the room behind the Baptist Church on the High Street, Brandon.

Don’t forget to follow us on and keep up to date with what’s going on. Check out our website on: www.brandonphotographicclub.co.uk

This is our best year ever and everyone is delighted with the result. The golden orb in the sky shone down on the whole of the day as our visitors walked around Thetford, some waiting patiently outside their chosen first stop for the start time of 11am. Although it was hot, there were plenty of refreshment stops and our gardeners provided extra water and ice cold lollipops to keep everyone hydrated. Lots of raffle tickets were sold beforehand and on the day and the lucky prize winners have all been notified. Some gardens had added extras including mini competitions, which were enjoyed by those participating and the archery became quite competitive.

Thetford Inner Wheel Summer has arrived and Inner Wheel President Jenny Childerhouse welcomed members to her lovely garden for supper. This was the first meeting of her Presidential year when Thetford Inner Wheel will celebrate its 60th Birthday. Although we don’t meet officially in August plans are already being put in place to celebrate this momentous occasion on our official birthday next April. We also hope to support local and international charities with our fundraising ideas throughout the year. Recently we were invited to be with Thetford Rotary Club for a most enjoyable dinner where we almost joined in a local school’s Prom complete with Lorry and a white horse!

Skin Facts: Did You Know….? We do a lot of post graduate training with the International Dermal Institute and I thought I would share with you a few interesting facts about skin protection. Did you know SPF (suncream) should be worn 365 days a year? While summer months increase our risk of burning, the risk of ageing from Ultra violet light is happening all year round. The UV rays which are responsible for skin damage are the same strength all year round! Sunburn can double your risk of skin cancer. You should avoid full sun between 11am-3pm, top up sunscreen every 2 hours and always apply 30 minutes before sun exposure to avoid accidental damage. When going hiking or on a mountain holiday sunscreen becomes even more important. With the increasing altitude there is less atmosphere available to absorb UV radiation. To achieve the best SPF level of sunscreen you need to apply a teaspoon amount to the face and a shot glass amount to the body. Most of us fail to apply enough and are therefore not getting the level of protection we require. You should always reapply post swimming or excessive sweating. By Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days

The Fate Of Cats Here at Breckland Cats Protection, we hear lots of stories of the fate of various cats. Some are happy endings, some very sad. Take the 8 week kitten who was thrown over the wall at Cromer into the sea. Fortunately a couple saw it happen and managed to rescue the kitten, but the man who had done the deed was long gone. It makes us wonder whether these people who inflict terrible things on to kittens and cats, have any conscience at all. How do they sleep at night? Then there is a family who want to hand over to us four adult cats aged between 10 and 12, because they now have a puppy and he terrorises the cats and they are outside and too afraid to come indoors. How can anyone have cats for 10 years or more, and then want to be rid of them because they now want a dog? These poor cats could be in one of our pens for months and months, waiting for a new home, because when they are older, it takes longer to find homes for them. The owners could, of course, train the puppy to leave the cats alone, but that seems to be beyond them.

Tiger, who went missing for 3 weeks but managed to find his way home and is now recovering

again. This couple left no stone unturned to find their treasured cat and he is now having the best treatment possible to get him back to full health. Lots of cat owners go that extra mile for their beloved pet, whereas others shouldn't be allowed to have a cat in the first place. For help or advice of if you need assistance with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018.

Then there is the other extreme. I once homed 2 kittens John Oliver June/July/Aug 2018 Ads.qxp_Layout 1 10/0 which I had hand reared from tiny, to a lovely family, Rita Thompson who adore them. The kittens have now grown into beautiful cats. Sadly one of the cats, Tiger, went missing a couple of months ago and the owners were distraught. They rang all the vets, put notices up around where they live and spent hours roaming the streets looking for their beloved cat. 20 days went past and they had almost given up hope. Then on the 21st day, late in the evening, the cat managed to drag himself onto their front door step where he collapsed in a heap. The owners were at the vets first thing the next morning. Peter, Lorraine, Tracey & Ricky The cat had muscle wastage in his back legs, and that's why he could hardly walk. Fortunately he is fine. Students Showcase Shakespeare What better way to celebrate Midsummer Day than to watch an outdoor performance of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the woods? Students from Thetford Academy created a magical clearing in the woods for their performance providing the perfect atmosphere for one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies. Head of Drama, Helen Thomas-Jones introduced the performance; “This year has been a real challenge, normally this play is the preserve of the sixth form, but this year we’ve given years 7 to 10 the challenge of outdoor theatre. The cast have worked really hard to learn their lines and take on roles that would normally be played by much older students.”

William Bailey following in his father’s footsteps as Thisbe said, “It was really fun, although my wig was pretty ichy.” When asked who was the better Thisby in the family he replied, “I thought I did a better job than my Dad, he never looked as fabulous as me!” Review by Karen-Emma White

What does Thetford Society offer? Established in 1987 to promote high standards of planning and architecture and to educate the public in the geography, history, natural history and architecture of Thetford. Apart from our monthly talks where there is always tea, coffee and biscuits for a social afterwards, our aims are: 1. To promote a good image of the town by all appropriate means; 2. To act as a pressure group when necessary on a broad non-political basis; 3. To draw together people who have a common concern for the quality of resources and services in Thetford and 4. To encourage fresh initiatives which will benefit local residents.

Grimes Graves - part of the talk by Dr Nick Ashton The site is open throughout August from 10am - 6pm and free entry for English Heritage members Visit: www.english-heritage.org.uk

G RE AT

Nick started our journey through time when England was attached to the continent, it was a bitterly cold place in the winter and human settlements were much further south in Europe. Some of those early humans would follow rivers in the summer to scavenge for food. At that time the Thames travelled through East Anglia and finished at Happisburgh where the footprints of a family group have been excavated, estimated to be 9,000 million years old. On another dig at Barnham, evidence of frogs, snakes, terrapins, elephant, rhino and lion were discovered, thankfully these lion remains were 400 million years old (early Neanderthals). Another dig site at Lynford covering the late Neanderthal (60 million years ago) showed that they still had no fire, so with daytime temperatures of -12 degrees they must have been seasonal visitors sharing the land with Mammoths. By the time we reach Grimes Graves (2,500 years BC) there was fire, flint axes to cut trees and farm the land. A truly absorbing talk raising many questions from the audience.

Tax Clinic By Colin Chamberlain In this article, Colin Chamberlain of Lovewell Blake discusses the use of trusts in tax planning. What Is A Trust? Trusts have been used for many years to provide both tax and practical benefits. A trust is created when a person (described as the settlor) transfers assets to trustees for the benefit of their chosen beneficiaries. Assets can include shares, property or cash and a trust can be established either by deed – during the settlor’s lifetime, or can be included in a will – to take effect on the settlor’s death. How Can A Trust Help Me? There are a variety of benefits to setting up a trust, both from a tax perspective and a practical one. These include: - Inheritance Tax Savings; A gift of assets into a trust will enable those assets to fall out of the settlor’s estate if they survive the gift by seven years. - Income Tax Savings (an example); Mr ‘X’ is a higher rate taxpayer. He wishes to make a gift of an investment property to his three grandchildren and decides to settle it on a discretionary trust. The property produces a rental income of £10,000 per annum. Mr ‘X’ would normally pay tax on the income at the rate of 40%. The trustees will instead pay tax at 45% on most of the income. However, if an appropriate amount of the net trust income is distributed to the grandchildren, and they have sufficient unused personal allowances, they will be able to recover all of the tax paid by the trustees (a tax saving for Mr ‘X’ and his family of £4k per annum) - Control; A trust will enable you to gift valuable assets (as part of your inheritance tax planning) without losing control of them.

Pictured: Colin Chamberlain from Lovewell Blake

The tax rules that apply to trusts are complex and it is important that you seek advice before setting one up. Lovewell Blake has a great deal of experience when it comes to the set up and management of trusts, and can help you find the right legal advice and help with all aspects of the tax planning and ongoing administration. - Protection; Assets held in trust are protected to a greater extent from the claims of creditors in a bankruptcy or divorce. - Flexibility; You can allocate the income/capital of the trust as you wish.

Will The A11 Dualling Finally Deliver For The Town? It is now over 3 years since the A11 dualled carriageway was officially opened, following the sterling efforts by a group of local business people, over 10 years ago, to get the dualling moved up the government’s transport priorities from number 26 to number 2. At the recent quarterly business breakfast forum, held at Grand Central, 60 local business people heard about the progress being made using the improved transport infrastructure to attract investment into the area. Linn Clabburn from the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership spoke about opportunities on the Cambridge-Norwich Tech Corridor, the midpoint of which is Thetford.

Cambridge - Norwich Tech Corridor A new opportunity for Thetford?

Robert Campbell from Breckland District Council explained what plans were in place to improve employment prospects for those living locally as well as to give support to existing businesses in the area looking to grow. In this respect, the ability to

Linn Clabburn, Business Development Manager, Cambridge - Norwich Tech Corridor

accommodate new employees and their families on the new housing planned for the north east of the town is a valuable attraction. There was broad recognition across the room that Thetford would only be able to attract the level of investment it deserved if it were able to project a more united front, with both public and private sector able to operate transparently, confident in the knowledge that we were working together for the greater good. The Town has a rich history and the Forum hope very much to play a part in writing the next chapter. Chris Kennard – Chair, Thetford Business Forum Greater Thetford Development Partnership Community Subgroup Next meeting: Wednesday 19th September 2018. The Subgroup meetings are open to the public and discuss issues of local concern. For more info visit: www.gtdp.org.uk

Governance Change For Fire Service? “Efficient, effective and economic” is how Norfolk County Council describes the Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service (NFRS), in a document published recently. The report outlines exactly why the governance of NFRS should remain with Norfolk County Council. The document comes after the Norfolk Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Lorne Green, outlined why he should be in charge of running the County’s Fire Service, and not the County Council. Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, Chair of Communities Committee at Norfolk County Council, explains: “Having considered the PCC’s business case, we are strongly of the view that Norfolk Fire & Rescue service should continue to be run by Norfolk County Council. The risks far outweigh any potential operational or financial benefits. So much more would be gained by working together better. I’d like to encourage the people of Norfolk to take the time to consider the business case and respond to the public consultation."

improve the capacity to keep the people of Norfolk safe The Council claims that their efficient management of NFRS will deliver the same benefits outlined by the PCC without a change of governance. Councillor Dewsbury continues: “You only need to look at the level of respect received from the local community to see how well-loved Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service truly is. Such trust is priceless”. Thetford Amnesty International The Thetford group of Amnesty International meets monthly at the Bell hotel in Thetford on a Wednesday or Thursday evening. Its next meeting is on Wednesday 5th September at 6.30pm. On Saturday 14th July we held a stall in the market place particularly about the issue of reuniting refugee children in Britain with their parents. Many refugees who reach safety from persecution and repressive government such as Syria are left isolated and traumatised as they grapple with a new language and live in a new country. Meanwhile the people they love are far away facing unthinkable dangers. The current UK laws governing the rights of refugees are restrictive and unfair. They deny child refugees the right to bring their parent or guardian to the UK. They keep parents apart from children who have only just turned 18. And they lead to elderly relatives being left behind in war-torn countries to fend for themselves.

Members of Thetford Amensty International at the recent stall. Left to right; Toby Stokes, Susie Dowling, Simon John and Julia Phypers

Minister for Immigration. Anyone who wants to support Amnesty International in this cause should contact the group via its Facebook page.

On 16th March 2018 a private members bill on refugee family reunion passed its second reading and was supported a cross-party 1group of MPs. The Group MCP HP by Advert_Layout 12/02/2016 16:45 Page 1 collected signatures which will be delivered to the

Marathon Mel Becomes Record Breaker Thetford marathon runner Mel Sturman has become a record breaker after completing the Great Barrow Challenge last month. Overcoming sweltering heat and bad blisters that made getting trainers on almost impossible, Mel also used the event to fundraise to start a new Junior Parkrun in Thetford whilst running trails across the Norfolk and Suffolk countryside. Junior Parkrun in Thetford will be aimed at 4 to 11 year old using a 2km route on a Sunday morning. Mel is keen to launch the new event by the end of the year but needs to raise £3,000 to over the initial start up costs. "I am very pleased to become the first woman and GB record holder to complete 10 marathons in 10 days for the 5th time. It is fantastic to be a record holder and pleased to put Thetford on the map in such a positive way. I hope my efforts continue to inspire others to turn a dream into reality". Mel started running when she was 40 and in the 7 years since has clocked up an impressive 230 completed marathons with a goal to reach 300 next year. This month Mel will extend her record by taking part in the

Saxons, Vikings and Normans 10 in 10 challenge at Gravesend. Mel will then head to the USA for the Boston marathon in October. Mel is also finalising plans for the now annual Iceni Marathon, half marathon and 10k which will be held in Thetford on 9th September 2018. Parkrunner Of The Month

Thetford Dolphins

Lacie is one of our many young people who attend the weekly parkrun. Lacie aged 6, started parkrun when she was 4 years old. When Lacie first started she wasn't keen on the running but has so far completed parkrun 14 times. Her first 5k run took 1 hour and 10 minutes and now she confidently completes the distance chasing her mum around the route in 41 minutes and 33 seconds. Lacie regularly volunteers with her mum and recently clocked up her 27th volunteer. Lacie likes to marshal and her favourite spot is "jelly baby corner" where she can hand out jelly babies to other participants.

Thetford Dolphins third and final round of its mini gala once again saw a great turn out, swimming over 50m free, 50m fly & 25m fly and witnessed 3 swimmers share first place and 2 new club records. Filipe Marinho was leading swimmer going in to this last round but was caught by Francesca Long and Emily Chandler, all finished on 19 points. Francesca set a new club record for the girls 12y 50m fly and Aimee Dickerson for the girls 11y 50m free. New times for Abbie Nelson, Dylan Harvey, Eden Macduff, Edward Allman, Eleanor Harvey, Ellie Buckley, Emily Chandler, Ethan Harris, Frazer Canham, Hannah Murrell, Hannah Twells, Harriet Denton, Isabelle Kemp, Keira Cronin, Lucy Brown, Lukas Gardeikis, Madeline Ramsey, Nathan Ruggles, Oliver Nelson, Oscar Harris, Ruby Perrin, Samuel Fleet, Samuel Rush, Shannon Taylor, Tiffany Pestell and Toby Flood. The Black team were overall winners with 235 points, while the green team were the best supporting.

Lacie Bailey aged 6, our August 2018 Parkrunner of the month

Lacie likes parkrun because she likes to run down the bridge and shout "weeeeeee". Lacie says the best thing about parkrun is seeing and talking to all of the grown ups and having them cheer her on. Lacie has also completed the junior parkrun at Bury St Edmunds and the Banham Zoo fun run. Lacie's mum Kayleigh Bailey said she has seen many benefits of Lacie participating in parkrun. Kayleigh says she has seen Lacie's confidence grow. Lacie used to be shy but now has the confidence to talk to other people and it has helped her with activities outside of parkrun. Thetford Parkrun takes place every Saturday morning at 9am, meeting at the Priory car park off Water Lane and its completely free to take part.

Recovery – The Importance Of Stretching Finding time in our busy schedules to workout is one thing but then finding the time to stretch both before and after is another! Stretching plays a very important role in our training and too many of us do not do it! Stretching before we engage in exercise is important because; it lubricates the joints, it opens our muscles, helps with an initial flow of blood before you start. Once the body is warmed up and the muscles have been loosened, you’ll benefit with the movements in your workout! Stretching after training is just as important. When we workout, lactic acid builds up in our muscles, which leads to muscle soreness and fatigue. Have you ever worked out, felt nothing the day after BUT the day after that you can hardly move?! That’s what is known as DOM’s – Delayed Onset Muscle soreness. This will occur when relatively new to training or real strenuous exercise and can be mitigated by stretching! Stretching the muscles when they’re warm, increases blood circulation and enables us to open the muscles we’ve just tightened by training. In every class I provide, you will be coached through a full and valid warm up and cool down. Not only does this minimise injury but generates greater flexibility and helps pin point any muscles which are particularly tighter in the body or can identify injuries sustained while training.

* Passive Stretching – Help from an external agent * Isometric Stretching – Resistance of muscle groups without motion * Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation –For rehab Enjoy your training and look after your body! - Rich Contact Richard via email: richard@tigerfitnessclub.co.uk
