Concert Success For Singers Due to the kindness of Thetford Methodist Church, a last-minute venue change prompted by stormy weather forecasts meant that ‘An Ode to Thetford’, Thetford Singers Summer Concert evening, was not to be enjoyed in the King’s House Gardens, but the more traditional venue of the Methodist Church. Its excellent acoustics served only to amplify a wonderful evening of music celebrating Thetford in song. Musical director Chris Parsons once more took masterful command of the evening, alongside Fiona Barnett with the Admirals Academy Singers and John Weeks directing of the junior branch of the Singers, Thetford Voices. Skilful accompaniment by a talented group of musicians and accompanists meant the audience were treated to another professional standard evening of the choral arts which might be more in keeping with one of England’s great cities, but there again Thetford has been great. A joyful traditional summer opener was followed by ‘Early One Morning’ with the sweetest of harmonies which got the evening going beautifully. Thetford Singers shaded their sounds with even more variety than the beautiful pastel shades worn on their scarves and ties. Once the Admirals Academy Singers took the stage, their joyous lively tones had the audience enrapt with their cherubic sounds, starting with a wonderful round of ‘Derrie Ding Dong Dason’; their skill and enthusiasm took them through their repertoire beautifully. The mood changed for the final part of the evening as we were treated to the premiere of the newly commissioned Thetford Singers piece ‘An Ode to Thetford’ composed by Nils Greenhow. Eight musical vignettes highlighted aspects of life in Thetford and its surrounds over the years, was a fitting tribute to a town which once again finds itself on the rise. Narrated brilliantly by John Weeks, ‘Thetford The Mighty City In

The East’ feels most appropriate for our time as our town grows so rapidly, however the Ode began with a powerful look back to the ancient sounds of Thetford. The penultimate movement ‘Thetford Forest’, our hidden gem of sanctuary in the East, was described so perfectly in this new piece it took me straight to the heart of Cranberry Rough on the Pingo Trail with lyrics celebrating the wildlife and nature on our doorstep. New EACH Shop Coming To Thetford East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is excited to announce another new addition to its retail portfolio. EACH has acquired premises in Thetford which opened on the 25th July. The clearance shop in Lime Kiln Lane will trade seven days a week. As well as offering the usual clothing and bric-a-brac, it will also be the new home of the charity’s growing eBay team, currently situated in EACH’s Retail Distribution Centre (RDC), also in Thetford, in Brunel Way. Sarah Throssell, EACH Shop Acquisition Manager, said: “We’ve long had ambitions to open a shop in Thetford and are delighted plans have come to fruition. This outlet will have different coloured hangers and tubs to reflect the various prices, and customers will be able to bulk buy children’s clothing in bags. We’ll also hold larger items here that have historically only been suitable for local auctions. Our busy eBay team will relocate from our RDC where they currently operate in a space of 400 sq ft. They’ll now have 1,500 sq ft to play with so that they can continue doing a great job bringing in money to support our work caring for children with life-threatening conditions and supporting their families. Of course, they’ll need more support, so if you’ve got a few spare hours to give then please get in touch.”
The new EACH shop located at Lime Kiln Lane
- An item of good-quality furniture or prom dress worth £24 could fund an hour with a psychologist to help guide and support families going through, likely, the toughest period of their lives. In the past financial year, EACH shops generated an impressive profit of over £1.1 million that all went towards helping families make the most of their precious time together. Anyone interested in more information on volunteering at the new shop can call Sarah on 07540 335680 or email; volunteerservices@each.org.uk
EACH’s retail portfolio is growing at a fast pace, with nine shops having opened last year. This latest one in Thetford will be its fourth of 2019, 16th in Norfolk, and 39th overall. The charity welcomes donations of the following; Clean and good-quality goods: clothing, brica-brac, modern paperbacks, toys, jewellery, DVDs/CDs, household linens, retro and vintage clothes, and small electrical items. These can be dropped off at the new shop located at Lime Kiln Lane. EACH also needs donations of good-quality furniture and can collect it free of charge if you are unable to transport it yourself. Call 01842 821620 for more information. To put into context the difference just a small donation to a shop can make to the vital work EACH does, here are some examples of what your donation could pay for: - A tea set worth £11 could fund an hour of specialist play tailored to a child’s individual needs - A nice wedding hat or jacket worth £19 could pay for an hour of vital physiotherapy Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 7

Stunt Team Heading To Thetford A racing stunt team is set to thrill crowds this year at the annual Charles Burrell Centre Community Day. Taking place on Sunday 1st September 2019, the event seeks to showcase many of the organisations operating in Thetford that are available to local residents. Tenants and hirers of the Centre will be on hand to demonstrate what they do and answer queries. Numerous other groups from around Thetford are also participating. For the first time the event will feature a headline act - Two Brothers Racing. They’re a racing stunt team consisting of Mark Van Driel (Vandal), Paul Todd and Katrina Van Driel. They will be performing two 30 minute shows for attendees using their stretched drift bikes. Both Vandal and Toddy are real petrol heads loving all forms of motor sport but of course primarily they love bikes. Vandal has been the UK street bike freestyle champion three times and holds a Guinness world record while Toddy was the 2016 UK Champion. Both riders have been in blockbuster films as stunt doubles, TV shows and featured in chart topping music videos. Billie Lawler, one of the organisers of the event said; “Two Brothers Racing were part of an event last year
which raised £1,000 for CBC which went towards our Power To Change project. We wanted to invite them back to our Community Day to showcase their skills”. The CBC Community Day runs from 10am - 4pm. There will be a variety of demonstrations in the main ring plus a range of children’s activities. With a beer tent, BBQ and other food stalls it looks set to be a great day out so make a note in your diary to go along. Parking will be limited so attendees are encouraged to walk if possible, or park on the field at the bottom of Staniforth Road entrance will be marked on the day. Out and About Thetford Good Neighbour Sheme Launched
Abbey Neighbourhood Centre was a hive of activity as Keystone Development Trust launched the Friends of Abbey Good Neighbourhood Scheme. The Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Brenda Canham joined residents, invited guests, Keystone Trustees and CEO Louise Humphries for a drop in session and BBQ. The 1 year pilot project has been funded by Community Action Norfolk and is aimed at supported care patients. Part of the project is to encourage residents of the Abbey Estate to volunteer to support their neighbours in their homes, with a wide range of one-off tasks such Mayor of Thetford (centre) next to Rachel Harrington (right) and Tonya Windsley (far right) as mowing the lawn, changing lightbulbs, taking people to appointments, shopping or collecting and returning library books, filling in forms, listening or having a chat. The project is led by Rachel Harrington, Keystone Community Manager with the support of Tonya Windsley, Development Worker from Community Action Norfolk. “We’ve provided some seed money to get the project started,” explained Tonya, “The plan is to develop the project into something more sustainable for the long term.” The service will be free to access but travel expenses for lifts and the costs of any materials needed for a job will need to be covered. Rachel is looking forward to the project taking off, “It’s early days but we’ve had lots of interest from prospective volunteers and requests for support. I’m really looking forward to seeing the local community on the estate working together to support each other. The project is aimed at anyone on the Abbey estate who is in need of a small job they are unable to do, for example if they have been in hospital, and still require support at home, we could go in and do some odd jobs for them. We could also go and chat with them if they are isolated.” Alongside the home support project, there are also plans to offer a weekly free community meal on a Thursday lunchtime over 12 weeks at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre. This will enable the centre to be used as a base to combat loneliness. “Sharing a meal will enable people to touch base with others and access any support information,” Rachel continued. A longer term aspiration for the project is to offer lunch deliveries by bike across the estate by working with The Bike Shed. All volunteers will be screened and supported by Rachel. To find out more about the project contact: abbey.reception@keystonetrust.org.uk or call 01842 821643.
Mosaic Workshop Success
Artist Maggie Campbell returned to Thetford Library for the second of her mosaic workshops as part of the Silver Social programme. The group each created a clay mould which was then studded with tiles before plaster was poured in to create the mosaic artwork. Speaking about the activity Maggie said, “The plaster work created today is brilliant, I absolutely enjoy coming to Thetford and working with the groups here. I’m very happy with today’s session and hope the ladies are too.” Joy aged 91 who took part was delighted Silver Social participants with Maggie Campbell with her piece, “I’ve enjoyed today immensely, it’s a lovely (centre) and their plaster mosiac creations way to meet new people, especially like minded craft people.” One of the participants, Jan was so inspired after Maggie’s original workshop that she has been creating her own mosaic mats and tiles at home, “I couldn’t wait to try what I learnt out at home,” explained Jan. Dominque Tonitto, Silver Social Project Co-ordinator said the workshop was a really enjoyable way for older people to get together and try something new. Festival Talks For Museum The first in a series of talks held at Ancient House Museum as part of the Festival of Norfolk & Punjab saw researcher and author William Cross talk about Prince Victor Duleep Singh and the Curse of the Carnarvons. Prince Victor and George Herbert, 5th Earl of Carnarvon (of Highclere Castle and the tomb of Tutankhamum fame) had a lifelong close friendship having met as Eton College schoolboys before going to Cambridge University together. Both were said to have experienced dysfunctional aristocratic childhoods which shaped their friendship and adult lives, and both were important male heirs within their families. The young men enjoyed high society shooting parties together and gambled their fortunes away in Monte Carlo and Cairo. Despite both men marrying, their close friendship endured, with Almina, Countess of Carnarvon and George’s wife describing them as ‘umbilically connected’. Prince Victor enjoyed a close friendship with the Countess spending most of his time at Highclere, even accompanying the Author William Cross at Ancient Earl and Countess on their honeymoon and they in return accompanied Prince House Museum, founded by Prince Victor and his new wife Lady Anne Coventry on theirs. Both men are said to Victor’s brother, Frederick have experienced celibate marriages, George showing no interest in Almina and Princess Victor instructed not have issue with Prince Victor by Queen Victoria. Prince Victor and The Countess however developed a tight close friendship and it was to Prince Victor that she turned when her beloved mother died, not her husband. Using archive material gathered over many years and lengthy conversations with members of Almina’s close circle, William has uncovered perhaps the most controversial secret to date, that Prince Victor was the father of Henry, 6th Earl of Carnarvon. A letter discovered in 1996 by Rev David Sox, historian to the Earl of Carnarvon was discovered in the Highclere archives and appears to confirm the century old rumours amongst British Aristocracy, where the 6th Earl’s parentage was described as a ‘grey’ area. It clearly stated that Prince Victor had fathered a child with the Countess, providing the much longed for heir that the Earl refused to sire in 1898. Prince Victor was named Godfather to Henry, Lord Porchester and took a close interest in Henry passing on his exceptional shooting skills. The ring that his father, George had given to Prince Victor was bequeathed to Henry in Prince Victor’s will to be regarded as a family heirloom. For festival details visit; www.essexcdp.com New Play Area For Children A team of 11 volunteers from Thetford Sainsbury’s have given up their day off and joined together to help create an outdoor play area for Thetford Toy Library. Sainsbury’s is 150 years old this year and as part of the celebrations each store was given an amount of money and encouraged to support a charity. Thetford Toy Library has been running for over 17 years and is run by local volunteers. Alison Milldown, PR Ambassador for Thetford Sainsbury’s said, “When we were asked to undertake a community project our first thought was the Toy Library, and we wanted to keep our project local. Other stores have gone further out into the community or worked with national charities. We already had a link to the Toy Library The Sainsbury’s team during the sandpit installation as Michelle uses the store for her awareness days.” With at Thetford Toy Library’s outdoor area help from one of the Toy Library volunteers, the group created a sandpit and outdoor chalking area. The store also donated sandpit toys and Alison is hoping the same team will create a water play area later in the year. Speaking about the support from Sainsbury’s, Thetford Toy Library leader Michelle Gray said, “It’s really nice that Thetford Sainsbury’s have chosen us as we’re generally too small for most organisations to be interested in, so we’re really grateful for their help.” For more information about Thetford Toy Library visit; www.facebook.com/thetfordtoylibrary Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 11

This month’s Thetford Face is Mike Wabe. Mike is not only an award winning Town Crier but also the guide for Thetford’s Ghost and Heritage walks and takes part in Thetford’s offer for Heritage Open Days (HODs). He is also in demand during December as a certain white bearded, red clothed gentleman. How long have you lived in Thetford? We moved here in June 1995, I had just retired from the RAF after 23 years and it was equidistant between two jobs I could have done. We found our house and soon settled in. Had you been in the town during your time with the RAF? I was at RAF Honington during the hot summer of 1976 and spent most of it putting out fires on the common. Other than that, no we didn’t know much about the town before moving here.
Mike Wabe, who retired to Thetford and has thrown himself into our local history and community
which led me to research and develop a talk on the Victorian Gaoler. I was secretary and a reader at Link Up for 3 or 4 years, I thoroughly enjoyed it because I’d been part of a project when I based at RAF Coningsby for the RNIB called The Talking Books project. I also started a Murder Mystery business in 2013, writing, producing and performing around locations in East Anglia.
Mike receiving the High Sheriff of Norfolk’s award in recognition of great and valuable services to the community for ‘Prison! Me! No Way! in 2010’
You’ve been involved in several groups, what started your involvement in community engagement? I’ve always had an interest in history and became a member of the Thetford Society initially. Once we moved here I saw an ad for the Euston Park Bowmen. I had a go, found out I was quite good at the longbow and joined a group of reenactors, the Feudal Archers. From that I developed the Medieval Archer and did talks during the early days of HODs in Thetford. Around the same time, I was involved in a Prison Project
Have you worked with the museums in town? Yes, I’ve volunteered at all three. At Ancient House I developed some storytelling sessions, helped with a crime and punishment day and a special murder mystery for their History Club. I was part of their Christmas celebrations for a couple of years too. I’ve been Mr Burrell at the Charles Burrell Museum and also attend their opening and closing events in my role as a town crier. I’ve supported Dad’s Army Museum as a town crier before now too. How long have you been involved with Leaping Hare CIC? I’ve been volunteering there for the past 5 years. I wanted to give something back, and as I’ve retired I could, and I absolutely love it. It’s great talking to visitors to the town about what they can see and do during their time here.
Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 14
You’ve developed the very successfull guided walks along with the team at Leaping Hare, how did that happen? I started doing ghost walks in Bury St Edmunds initially, then I suggested trying a Thetford version. The walk has been running for 4 years and is very popular. We introduced a Heritage Walk for the summer months, but once I started researching I soon discovered that there was too much for one walk, so we split it into two, the Castle side and Priory side. Have you got any plans for more walks? I suggested a Henry Cable walk would be a good one to add and we’re launching it for this year’s HODs. It’s a totally unrivalled story from the past and the future, it’s a love story and unique. We still get visitors from Australia coming to the town because of Cable’s story.
Mike in action as the Medieval Moneyer during HODs
Do you enjoying being part of HODs in the town? I love it. I’ve gone from being a Medieval Archer to Michael the Moneyer now! I really enjoyed researching the history of money and the mint in Thetford. At Leaping Hare, we strike hammered coins as they would have been from 800 – 1154. I really enjoy playing the character and talking about money to younger visitors. How did you become a Town Crier? Towards the end of 2012, I was researching a new talk and came across town criers. I had a look at Thetford Town Criers and discovered that the town hadn’t had one for many, many years, so I wrote to Thetford Town Council and became qualified in the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers. I started off doing a regular Saturday morning cry linked to Thetford’s history and what was happening that coming week. I also started entering competitions in Ely and Warwick. In 2014 I hosted a Town Crier and Junior Town Cryer Competition as part of Thetford’s Great Festival. I mentored Harry Tuberville, the current Thetford Junior town crier after he won the Junior competition. I was invited to enter a competition in Brandon and having won discovered I was their
Winning 2nd Place at the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers British Championships
Town Crier which I did for several years. Watton then approached me to become their Town Crier around the time that Thetford Town Council were focussing on Harry as the Junior Town Crier; but I still do some duties in the town such as the SpecSavers charity events and the Burrell Museum. If I can help, I will. Did Town Crying lead to becoming a toastmaster? Yes, it was a natural progression. When I was interviewed by the Guild they mentioned it, so I completed the training and appear regularly at weddings and charity events in and around Thetford. I also trained as a civil celebrant after someone suggested I’d be good at it. What is your favourite thing about Thetford? I think there’s so much community work going on here. There’s always something going on in the town and it’s good quality stuff too. I love the history of the town; all you have to do is walk 2 minutes from King Street and you’ll see that history.

All unpaid carers are entitled to support but many find it hard to navigate their way through the services available. In recognition of this, Norfolk County Council has funded a comprehensive support service for carers, Carers Matter Norfolk, which offers: - A 7 day a week Freephone advice line 0800 083 1148; Carers can chat to our experienced, friendly advisors about any of their caring concerns. The advice line is open from 8am-8pm Monday-Friday, 4pm-8pm on Saturdays and 8am- noon on Sundays. - One To One Support; We have a team of Carer Connectors who can visit you in your home or a place convenient you, to offer tailored support and in-depth, complex advice. - Counselling; We have a free counselling service for carers who find that their caring role is affecting their own health and wellbeing. - Education and Training; We have created the UK’s first dedicated Carer’s Self Help Hub with over 450 online
videos, podcasts and training courses in areas such as general healthcare to first aid, infection, nutrition and how to navigate the healthcare system. - Carers Voice; We provide a forum for carers to share their views, keep in touch with each other and access to one of over 140 peer support groups. Club With Worldwide Appeal The name Probus frequently begs the question, ‘What does it stand for?’ It represents the first part of the word ‘professional’ linked with the first part of the word ‘business’. Probus was first formed in the UK in the 1960s. The idea then was to enable retired and semi-retired men to meet together to make new friends and develop interests free of any political or sectarian influence. Since those early days Probus has spread worldwide with some 4,000 clubs and a membership that has grown to over 400,000. And today there are women’s clubs and mixed gender clubs. Thetford’s Probus Club was formed in 1974 and has about 40 members. It holds regular monthly meetings at which plans for outings and lunches (also held monthly with wives and partners welcome as are widows of members) are discussed. Usually there is guest speaker and sometimes members speak about their own experiences and careers. It is interesting to see how the club reflects the locality with people from many walks or life. They come from agriculture, industry, commerce and public service. Inevitably, in the Thetford area a number of members have been in the RAF and in the United States Air Force, but there is also a sub-mariner. At least three members are former mayors of the town.
Murder Mystery Actors Wanted A leading Murder Mystery Company is looking for actors to join in the fun. Murder Most Foul hosts high quality murder mystery evenings in venues across East Anglia including The Elveden Inn. Acting experience is helpful, but more important is having buckets full of enthusiasm to take part in a totally immersive event. You must be over 18 years old and have your own transport. There are no lines to learn, each actor is supplied with a plot and everything they need to know about their character. You will be told what the character is like, who they get on with, who they don’t get on with and additional background information – the rest is up you on the evening. Before each event the cast is given the plot so far and has the opportunity to rehearse. The cast are made aware of what they can reveal during each section, running up to section 4 when the reason for the incident is revealed to all. Actors are paid expenses and enjoy a 3 course meal as part of the event, where they sit with guests and keep the plot running. To apply please download an actor’s application form and return along with a current photo. For an informal chat to find out more about Murder Most Foul event please call Mike Wabe on the number below:

Day Trip For U3A Members We recently enjoyed another day out with the day trip group leaders, this time a mystery tour. We met at Tesco’s car park, the weather was rather overcast but we were hopeful it would change. We set off - first stop Brandon to pick up the rest of our group. 48 altogether. Driving along we were speculating about where we were going, but no-one guessed. Our first stop was Norwich Aviation Museum where there are large selections of aircraft on show, amongst them the Vulcan last used in Afghanistan. There are many sheds containing war memorabilia, uniforms of various airmen, sad remains of crashed planes, there was so much to see. This is such an interesting place to visit, I can thoroughly recommend it. After coffee we set off again. This time the destination was Cromer, where we had lunch. I believe many of us gravitated to the fish n’ chips restaurant. Unfortunately the rain had become quite heavy, the sea grey and choppy - not a day to look around. Back on the bus it was decided to go for plan B which involved us going to Priory Garden Centre / Maze in Sheringham. In spite of the weather we had a great time and we look forward to our next trip which take place every month. Our thanks to Marilyn, Jane, Lynne and

Local Charities Urged To Apply For Up To £20,000 In Funding Local charities and community groups are being encouraged to apply for funding of up to £20,000 from a pot worth over £3 million that has been raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. A wide range of community organisations, from registered charities, to community groups and social enterprises, can apply for grants of between £500 and £20,000. Applications are open from Wednesday 31 July for two weeks, until 14 August. The funding is available through three different trusts, all of which are funded by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Each trust supports projects focussed on specific themes: People’s Postcode Trust wants applications from projects aimed at promoting human rights, combatting discrimination and the prevention of poverty. Postcode Community Trust supports initiatives working to improve the health and wellbeing of communities, including arts and physical recreation projects, as well as those with a focus on reducing isolation. Postcode Local Trust provides funding to groups that are dedicated to improving outdoor space, in addition to increasing access to it. Groups working on flood prevention measures and looking to implement renewable energy strategies are also eligible to apply. Over 300 groups were awarded grants earlier this year, with sports groups for military veterans, counselling support services and sensory gardens for people with dementia among the groups that benefitted.

Thetford AI Supports Refugee Week Thetford Amnesty International (AI) had a stall in the market to note Refugee Week displaying a brilliant Magnum exhibition of Refugees through the decades. This prompted some great discussion as people really thought about what it is to be a refugee. Most people talked about family members who had moved in the past because of economics or war and the difficulties of starting again after such great loss. Several people talked about how East Anglia was the destination for London evacuees in the Second World War. Everyone had been touched in some way by family or friends having to move at some point in their lives. Inspired by a challenge Andrea Jarrold had taken up to live on the rations a person would be allocated in a Syrian refugee camp, one of the members, Lisa brought along a sample of those rations. It contained a small bag of lentils and rice, a tin of sardines and some oil. People thought it was a ration for a day but, infact, it was rations for a week! It was humbling to think about how some people have to live in this world, on top of losing everything because of war or famine or, more frequently, climate crisis.
It was generally agreed that, if we had to move because of some crisis, we would hope that somewhere there would be a welcome for us from that misery. On a more positive note, it was also agreed that a diverse community is always more vibrant and that Refugees often contribute so much once they are established. Information about The City of Sanctuary movement was also on display. It was great to have so many uplifting discussions and a wish for a more peaceful world where people didn't have to move because of crisis. Past & Present
The Chequers Inn stood in King Street from at least the 18th century until closure in 1921. The past photograph was taken during the Great War 1914-18, when hundreds of soldiers were either billeted in the town or stationed at camps on the town’s periphery. After closure the old Chequers became the shop premises of Herbert Ellis, game dealer and grocer until closure and demolition in 1962. Our guest speaker for July was Robert Leader, a local author of more than 70 books and a former merchant seaman, Robert gave a talk “In Search of Secret Norfolk”. Using photographs from his book of the same name, Robert charted the heritage and history of our county through its great Norman castles and abbeys, its guildhalls and mediaeval wool churches, and the stately homes of the great land-owning families who helped to shape it all. He explained how important Thetford once was and how many mills it had, although now there is just the one. This led on to how Norfolk's rivers were so important for trade and transport and the importance of Kings Lynn which once was a major port. He described the fishing villages and genteel Edwardian towns, and theTel:wide Norfolk skies and lonely beaches, mysterious 01359 259818 or visit www.ovenclean.com fenlands and the lovely Norfolk broads.

Fly-tipper Fined £745 By Council A Thetford man has been fined £745 by Breckland Council after illegally dumping waste in Kilverstone. After the man was interviewed under Police caution, the Council's Enforcement Officer issued him with a fixed penalty notice of £400 for flytipping, plus a further £300 for not having an appropriate waste carrier's license and £45 administration charge. It comes as the result of a successful investigation by the council, which was prompted by a member of the public reporting the flytip to the district council. The council's officer investigated the site and was able to link the waste to the offender, who had been hired by another local resident to clear away household furniture and take it to the local recycling centre, but instead dumped it on a nearby open patch of land.

Councillor Alison Webb, Executive Member for Housing, Health and Environment, commented "Flytipping is illegal and a serious environmental crime that harms the countryside and costs taxpayers money to clear up. The council has a zero tolerance approach towards flytipping and we will not hesitate to take action to make sure people pay for their crimes. Anybody who sees a flytip should inform the council as quickly as possible, as this gives us a greater chance of catching the culprits. If you're hiring somebody to take waste away for you, make sure they are legitimate and have a waste carrier's license to avoid choosing a rogue trader who may not dispose of your material responsibly”. Householders are being encouraged to be particularly wary of businesses that only operate through social media or those who come to their door offering to take away rubbish cheaply. Residents can report suspected fly tipping online at www.breckland.gov.uk/flytip

Peace Comes to Thetford The Forgotten Soldiers Interesting portrayals of WWI soldiers were seen in Thetford on Saturday 20 July together with activities at Ancient House, all raising awareness of a new year long project focusing on Thetford’s First World War soldiers who survived and returned home but dying later from related injuries. Often in their twenties and thirties they were never commemorated, with no record of what happened to them. The project will enable schools, community groups, volunteers, family members to get involved. We need your help. There will be opportunities to learn new skills and be involved in a valued community project. Discover the local graves of First World War soldiers (interred between 1914 – 1935) and help us to design information panels at Thetford Cemetery to ensure that they are finally recognised. Further elements of the project will be a Christmas Tree Trail, inclusion in Heritage Open Days and a celebration event for all participants at the end of the project in September 2020. Garden Notes For August 2019 Most plants are now moving into the flowering and fruiting phase. There is much to enjoy but you may need to provide help to keep up a show of flowers. For instance, an application of slow-release fertiliser would perk up tubs and baskets which will have exhausted some of the initial nutrients in their soil. If you have suitable material to use as a mulch, an application after some good rain or a thorough watering will help plants through this dry month. It’s never too early to think about next year – as you deadhead and remove finished plants, collect some seed or scatter it straight away if you like a more random cottage-garden style. Poppies, larkspur and cornflowers will all provide you with splashes of colour for very little effort and at no cost! Aim to leave some spent plants with striking shapes to provide interest in the winter, especially when coated in frost. August is likely to be a month when watering is required, I think a lot of us are resigned to a yellowing lawn at this time of year. Vegetables must be provided with water to get any crop at all and it must be at steady intervals to prevent the skin splitting or distorting. Rainwater is supremely the best source of moisture; however, any water will do to keep the plot ticking over, and better a drenching every few days rather than ‘little and often’ which keeps roots near the surface – the opposite of best practice for hanging baskets, of course. Keep harvesting repeat crops (beans, courgettes, sweet corn) to encourage the production of new fruits. More demanding plants like melons, tomatoes and peppers will benefit from a high potash feed at this point. Fast growing salad crops like lettuce and radish will give you a quick return. You could also put in Swiss Chard which will stand the winter, is not a favourite of pigeons and will be there for the ‘hungry gap’ next year.
Keeping plants watered is a priority in August
National Allotment Week runs from the 12th to the 18th August – don’t expect any parades or fireworks but it is a good time to find out more about renting an allotment. Our trade post is open on Saturday mornings from 10 to 12 on the London Road site. The club BBQ is on Saturday 17th August at 4pm – time to raise a glass to Roger Rout, who served the club and committee so well, and Stan Baker, a true gentleman and veteran alotmenteer – both will be much missed. The BBQ is at the London Road site and is free for members, £2.50 for visitors. About Thetford ad June 2018.pdf 1 25/05/2018 10:14:53 Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

Pheasantly Surprised! Millions of Pheasants and Red-legged Partridges, both non-native to the UK, are released into the countryside at this time of year. You’ve probably noticed this when traveling the roads around Thetford, either by seeing more splattered remains or experiencing the sharp increase of kamikaze birds poised to surprise you by leaping from the verge. We don’t know for sure how many are released each year, but estimates by the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust suggest 41–50 million birds. This equates to around 45,000 tonnes of biomass – more than twice the combined weight of all of our native breeding birds! Increased collisions with vehicles aside, what effects might this quantity of non-native birds be having on other wildlife and the whole ecosystem?

at higher levels than they would otherwise reach? If so, could this have knock-on effects for other species that are vulnerable to increased predation pressure, such as Lapwing and Curlew? The scientists tested whether there were any links between the gamebird releases, and numbers and population changes of predators and scavengers: Buzzard, crow (Carrion and Hooded combined), Jay, Magpie and Raven. They found that generally there were more predators (specifically Buzzard, Jay and crows) in areas of high gamebird abundance, and that the predator populations grew faster where there were more gamebirds.
In a recent study, BTO ecologists used existing datasets to investigate. Game management can have positive effects, as measures to make agricultural habitat better for gamebirds often help other species. The creation of cover strips can provide food for seed-eaters such as buntings and finches, whilst woodland rides can also benefit butterflies. What about the impacts of the gamebirds themselves, though? For example, their foraging habits could have effects, perhaps by altering hedgerow structure – important for nesting birds – or reducing the numbers of invertebrates available for other birds to eat. The recent BTO work looked at another question: whether the extra food resource that these millions of gamebirds represent might have an impact on predatory and scavenging birds that feed on them. We know that most released birds do not end up in game bags, but are instead predated, scavenged, hit by vehicles, or survive to become part of the breeding population. Gamebird releases typically occur in autumn, when other food may be scarce, so is it possible that predator populations are being sustained
The results suggest that gamebird releases do boost predator numbers at a national scale. However, the ecology is very complicated: with more gamebirds, there may also be supplementary feeding, predator control and more habitat provided, which will all influence predators, gamebirds and other prey in different ways, so more work is needed. One thing that would really help our future understanding of the impacts of releases would be better knowledge of exactly how many gamebirds are being released, and how many predators are being controlled. Target Smashed For Open Gardens The team behind Thetford’s ever popular Open Garden event are celebrating after the grand total for the 2019 campaign was announced. With the addition of one final pop-up garden on July 14th, the total is now a fantastic £11,728.77, an increase of over £300 on last year’s total. All the proceeds go to St Nicholas Hospice, a charity which has touched the lives of so many locally. On the day the sun shone and hundreds of people enjoyed visiting 32 gardens, many not normally open to the public. Organisers Rachel Woods, Suzanne Norman and Susie Dowling would like to thank their main sponsors, Lawsons Estate Agents and Thetford Garden Centre, all the garden owners, businesses, raffle prize donors and supporters who enabled this year’s event to be such a success.
Dolly and Charles enjoy one of the 32 gardens opened in aid of St Nicholas Hospice this year
Suzanne said, “There are so many people who work behind the scenes to enable the event to be a success, I couldn’t host my refreshments without the team I have to help me and there are businesses and people across the town working together to make this happen for the hospice.” Suzanne and her neighbour both open their Betts oftogether Brandonand 1/8had AD.qxp_Layout 1 09/04/2019 gardens a staggering 50 cakes on offer in her garden along with tea, coffee and other

goodies and is a firm favourite with visitors starting their day with a bacon butty before heading off across town. Rachel continued,” We’re so pleased with this year’s total, the day was fantastic and to increase our total as the hospice celebrates 35 years of service is fantastic. We were thrilled to be part of Radio Norfolk’s Treasure Quest on Open Garden Day and have Julie Reinger at the CBC to see their Sky Garden. Rev Ken Nicholls wrote a delightful poem about Thetford Open Garden which Thordis Fridriksson read out on Radio Norfolk, so Thetford Open Gardens is very much putting the town on the map.” One visitor, Charles Napier wrote to Rachel to say that the day was the “Best ever, really superb – and nearly all new to us. We made ourselves at home and Dolly met new friends. Congratulations all round!” Thetford Open Gardens will return next spring with a selection of pop-up gardens with the main event on Sunday June 28th 2020.

Commonly Believed Myths Here are two myths clients often ask us when having skin care and body treatments.
Eating chocolate makes my skin breakout in spots! Myth. Chocolate does not cause breakouts. It does however contain high sugar and fat content, so too much would not be good as a high fat diet can make the skin oilier. I am thinking of having some sunbeds before my holiday to prevent my skin from burning. Myth. A sunbed will not protect your skin from burning simply because you have accelerated the melanin (pigment) in your skin. There is no such thing as a ‘safe ‘ tan, the skin goes darker in colour because it is trying to protect the body from ultra-violet light. The UK now has the highest reported cases of skin cancer in the world! Not something for us to be proud of. It has never been more important to be sensible & prevent burning or over exposing the skin to sun damage and wearing a high factor 25/30 sunblock. Kind regards, Lisa Stallings

Turning A Passion Into A Business With over 35 years experience, seamstress and tailor Alli Jones classes herself as a professional all-rounder. “There isn’t much I haven’t sewn over the years, I’ve worked with most materials including specialist fabrics. If it can be stitched together, I’ll make it happen!” said Alli. With over 35 years of tailoring experience, Alli also offers a home service for alterations which includes measuring and fittings. “I will come to the privacy of your home and ensure your clothes fit like a glove. It’s not only special garments such as Wedding dresses that I offer this to, but also for everyday clothing such as suits and jackets.” Another area Alli specialises in is creating memory items and bags, “I recently made someone a bag from a favourite jacket that belonged to their dad. I really enjoy interesting commissions like this and work with the client to create something special.” Her other love is working with vintage fabrics. Alli’s daughter, artist Faye Jones works with natural fabrics and dyes which Alli then turns into small sewing and knitting accessories such as needle rolls. Alli also makes curtains and other soft furnishings. For people interested in sewing but in need of tuition Alli is available for small group workshops or 1- 1 tutoring on sewing problems, “One of the groups I worked with had been on a dyeing course and wanted help to create something from their fabrics,” she explained. Alli has also recently started a project with TADDS (Thetford and District Dementia Support), each week she supports group members to start and finish small needlework projects or clothing alterations. “It’s lovely to be able to work with the local community and share a little bit of my passion as awell as helping to support someone.”

Summer Photograph Opportunity Summer is upon us and time for us all to go out and take some incredible photographs. When you are out and about this summer with your cameras, bear in mind some of the subjects we have in store for our members this year. There’s Reflections, Dereliction (now that could be interesting!), Riverscapes and Dramatic Wood – all subjects that are around us all the time so there is plenty of opportunities to choose from. We have an interesting and eclectic year of topics ahead of us, including tutorials and workshops on Depth of Field and Focusing; using a Flash and Multiple Exposures; Composition, Cropping and Cleaning-up Clutter and Macro Photography, so don’t miss out. Come along on Wednesday 4th September to meet the members, hear all about the year to come and watch a DVD on the Art of Travel Photography (Getting Beyond the Postcard). You don’t need to spend a fortune on expensive cameras to start learning about photography, many phones, compact and bridge cameras take some really good images and are well worth looking at. Give it a go and see how you get on.

Breckland Cats Protection Sometimes adult cats spend a lot of time in our care waiting for their forever home and we have two in particular right now that we would love to see go to a loving family. Kitten season can mean that our adult cats get overlooked, despite making lovely companions who won’t climb your curtains! They just want a comfortable bed, maybe to sit on your lap, regular food and a wander outside in the sunshine. Harry is one such cat. He is a black and white boy and blind in one eye. With a bit of patience, his true personality comes out. He is very curious and playful once you gain his trust, and wants no end of fuss and cuddles. Harry would be best suited to a quiet home with no other animals or children, maybe someone who works from home or is around the majority of the time to give him all the love and attention he deserves. Harry's previous owner died and that is why he is up for adoption. He is neutered, vaccinated and has had flea and worm treatment. He is a lovely sweet boy who needs a second chance. Trinity is a beautiful black girl, about 18 months old. She came into our care because the children of the house were giving her a hard time. She was very thin and distressed when she first arrived, but with lots of TLC she has turned into the most adorable girl. She has a feisty character and knows her own mind. She loves to play with her toys and adores being stroked. She is not keen on other cats, so we are looking for a home where she will be an only cat with maybe older children. Trinity is neutered, vaccinated and had flea and worm treatment.
For help and advice or if you need assistance with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. Rita Thompson

Project Showcases New Site A beautiful evening greeted guests to The Horticulture Industry Scheme (THIS) summer garden party at their Thetford Garden Centre site. THIS now has two sites in the town, their original site at the Charles Burrell Centre on the old school allotment and more recently at the back of Thetford Garden Centre where in the past 6 months, they have developed a large polytunnel and edible flower beds. Guests included the High Sheriff of Norfolk, The Lady Agnew of Oulton, Julia Nix, DWP District Manager East Anglia plus current and former participants from the project. “It’s been a lovely evening, we appreciate the support of everyone, the High Sheriff, Lady Clare, our Directors and supporters” said THIS CEO Georgina Keatley. Guests enjoyed fabulous live music from Ollie Trevers, delicious food and a chance to find out more about the success of the project. Director Tim Melvin said that the move to a second site had been a real success, “The support from all the staff has been tremendous, it’s been a natural way to work together and the quality of the garden centre plants inspires us, we want ours to look as good as theirs!” THIS is a non profit, social enterprise funded by the European Social Fund. There are currently 4 participants and 2 volunteers, all participants have been in contact with the judicial process and the project supports them back into work. “We’re delighted that we have our first THIS baby,” Georgina continued, “Its lovely to see our former participants getting on with their lives. We are here if they need ongoing support at any time.” Aiden has been with THIS for 4 months and is now planning to go to college to become a counsellor. “THIS has given me the opportunity to work as part of a team and for someone to have a bit of faith in me. I’m a new person, I’ve made a fresh start and it’s helped me to become a better person.” The High Sheriff talked to all the participants and said she was delighted to have been invited to the event.

Lady Clare has been instrumental in raising the profile of smaller Norfolk Charities since taking on the role in March this year and was particularly interested to hear from participants how the project had changed their lives. THIS supplies a number of local high end restaurants with edible flowers, leaves and vegetables and herbs including The Mulberry in Thetford alongside ground maintenance to make the project sustainable long term. Sensational South Pacific The Carnegie was transformed to a South Pacific Island during WW2 for a fantastic polished performance of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific by the Thetford Players. Accompanied by a live orchestra, the Players production was as ever their best yet, and with superb past performances of Oliver and My Fair Lady, the bar was set high. A great set, and excellent costumes, hair and make-up supported the cast who all performed their hearts out. The casting was spot on with Tina Matthews stealing the show as Nellie, a nurse from Arkansas who finds love with Emile. Julie Settle’s Bloody Mary was an audience favourite along with David Williams as Luther Billis, and in a departure from his normal Dame role, Luke Jeffries as Lt Cable demonstrated his versatility and beautiful singing voice.
The cast take a bow in front of the orchestra
Although primarily an adult cast, Ella May Weston and Oliver Matthews held their own as the children of Emile. Congratulations should go to all the cast and crew members, yet again the Players worked together as team producing outstanding results. With the annual Panto appearing on the horizon, Thetford Players have proved again that Thetford has talent and they are amongst the best. Tina Matthews (centre) steals the show with her incredible vocals
Dave Griffiths carried off the perfect French accent consistently throughout the performance including his solo numbers playing Emile with great emotion and conviction. Susan Dupont from NODA wrote to the Players after their opening evening and said, ‘Much larger orchestra than your usual and how good they were under the baton of Simon Barnett; must congratulate them especially for the excellent underscoring in the show as we heard every word, and then those wonderful familiar melodies. Directors Katie Wright and Craig Plumley have assembled a cast filled with energy and movement. The male chorus really hit the roof with ‘Nothing like a dame’, a great wake-up call for all the audience and some lovely cameo character roles to capitalise the action.’ The show was the complete package with the audience clapping loudly throughout, comedy moments, touching scenes, thought provoking social comment and historical references regarding WW2 and the part the Japanese played in the region.

Fasted Training Fasted training in my opinion is awesome for tapping into our energy stores and using fat as a fuel rather than anything we have in our bellies! People, including body builders and athletes use fasted cardio when they’re stripping down body fat. Mostly in the mornings, before breakfast, with nothing apart from water in their stomachs for hydration, this can be very effective for that particular goal! If you’re looking to drop some fat weight, then fasted cardio can be a good way of doing so, look to get your heart rate between 120bpm-150bpm. This can be done by walking incline on a treadmill or jump in on one of my Ti30 classes, which start at 8am! Here are a few other benefits of fasted cardio; Burning more fat Anti-aging effect Better brain function Increased growth hormone levels Improved insulin sensitivity Increased testosterone Enhanced fat loss Better endurance
Do be aware though, working out on an empty stomach can seem harder due to insulin levels, so your workout rate may decrease. Also, if the workout was really good and the body becomes really hungry, be careful not to overeat and/or stuff your face with the wrong foods and undo all that work you’ve just done! Fasted cardio should only be done when incorporated with a healthy balanced diet and not used to drop masses amounts of mass, fast. Please speak to a professional to get any info and remain safe! Empower Group Get Empowered! Members of Thetford Empower Hub enjoyed a monthly meeting with a difference recently. Kris French from Kuk Sool Won of Thetford joined the ladies for an introduction to self-defence. Empower Business Networking for Women was set up to provide locally based networking that’s child friendly and to allow working mums the opportunity to join in with networking, support and learning opportunities. The group meets on the first Wednesday of the month at Grand Central restaurant at 10am. Former Police Detective Kris has over 30 years of experience in Kuk Sool Won, a Korean Martial Art and his school is based at Thetford Grammar School. With the sun shining, the 10 ladies headed out to the riverside green and enjoyed a series of exercises designed to make them feel more confident when encountering a prospective attacker. Despite plenty of laughter, the ladies were unaminous in agreeing the session had been positive. Kris gave the group advice on what level of force is proportionate in the view of the Police, and other options that could be used with the strikes he demonstrated. “It was understanding the little differences in techniques that help you defend yourself,” one another member commented, “I didn’t

know I was capable of that! What an instructive, fun and therapeutic session we had today,” said another. Speaking about the session Kris said, “It was wonderful to be invited to the Empower Networking group, where the ladies totally engaged in a session of personal safety training. It was tremendous fun and they’ve all gone away with some very simple techniques to create some space away from a would be attacker.” For more information on Thetford Empower Hub e-mail; bkins1971@gmail.com For more information on self defence classes and Kok Sool Won classes call Kris on 07984494146

Mel‘s 6th Barrow Triumph Running one marathon is tough but Thetford’s Melanie Sturman has just completed the Great Barrow Challenge; 10 marathons in 10 days - for the 6th time! The event starts and finishes at Barrow, Suffolk and comprised 5 different mulit-terrain routes in Suffolk. Each person follows a marked course and completes the single lap routes ranging from 26.2 miles to 27 miles. Runners are supported along the way but do have to be pretty self sufficient by carrying additional fluids, nutrition and of course navigating the routes. 28 people started the event and there were 22 finishers. Melanie said the heat and hills make the event very challenging and ended up with 8 blisters, slight improvement on the 13 last year. The event has been held since 2014 and Melanie is the only female and just one of two people who has completed all 6 events.

Championship For Thetford Athletes
Parkrunner Of The Month
Mid July saw the prestigious English Schools National Track and Field Championships held at the Alexander Stadium, Birmingham. This event is renowned as the 4th biggest Track and Field event in the world behind the Olympics, World and European Championships. The Championship sees some of the best young athletes in the country represent their county for the right to be crowned English Schools Champion in their event. It is one of the highlights of the junior track and field calendar; qualification is a culmination of each athlete’s success at County and Regional level, along with the need to achieve the qualifying times or distances for their event.
Our Parkrunner of the month is Myra Day. Myra, aged 50 joined the parkrun community in April, two months after the inaugural event. Myra said she wanted to join to improve her fitness and stop smoking. Parkrun is a free timed 5k event and Myra’s slowest time was 44 minutes. Improving fitness has happened for Myra because she now regularly completes the parkrun event in 24 minutes.

This year Thetford AC had three athletes qualify in their chosen events. These athletes were Jessica Norkett, Asha Soanes and James Peck. Jess, qualifying for the third year in succession, was part of the Norfolk Schools team. Jess contested the Intermediate Girls 1500m, finishing in 7th place in heat 1 and finding herself only 0.4 second off making the final. Fellow Thetford AC athlete Asha, representing Norfolk Schools for the second time, contested the Intermediate Girls Long Jump finishing in 25th place overall. Qualifying for the first time and representing Suffolk Schools, James contested the Junior Boys 1500m. James had a great race finishing in 3rd place in his heat and following it up with a 7th place finish in the final. All athletes should be very proud of their achievements, showing dedication and commitment in order to gain selection for these championships. Jessica Norkett, Thetford AC Junior Press Officer
On the 28th June Myra became the first female at the Thetford parkrun to reach the magical milestone of 250 events. When participants achieve this milestone, they are able to claim for a free 250 parkrun shirt. Myra regularly takes part in social runs with other members of the Thetford Walking and Running groups. These runs take place on a Tuesday and Thursday evening, either 17:45 or 18:30 and members complete distances from 5k -10k. Improvement in fitness has enabled Myra to complete a few 10-mile races and a half marathon. Myra said she will continue running at parkrun because she loves the sense of community and has made lots of friends.
