Players Triumph With First Full Musical Production Review by Assistant Editor, Karen Emma White From the awe-inspiring opening number to the joyous finale, Oliver! was everything you would expect to see from a professional theatre company; not a local amateur group with a few days to rehearse on their set and a live brass section. New leads Craig Plumley as Fagin, Maddie Soan as Nancy and Tom Chamberlain as Bill Sykes brought a fresh feel to the group with many old favourites appearing in supporting roles. The quality of the sets, costumes and make-up not only enhanced the acting, but took the production to a whole new level, proving that it’s not just the actors who make a successful performance but the entire crew and musicians working together as a team. Highlights included the incredible stage presence of Harry Smith as Dodger, Emma Kelly as Widow Corney and Jack Jenkins as Oliver. Speaking after the opening night, director Caroline Foot said “It all went brilliantly, everyone was nervous about opening night as we’ve never done something like this before. I had tears in my eyes at some points because I was proud of them all.” Thetford Players Chair, Jo Cooper followed on “I’m worn out, impressed, ecstatic, and very very proud. It’s our first full length musical and everyone has done themselves proud. It’s been fantastic” For Craig Plumley, it was his first time on stage since school “I feel exhilarated! I had a really good time on stage, I thoroughly enjoyed it, I enjoy singing the songs, it’s a delight.” For information on joining the Players email: thetford.players@hotmail.com

Out & About Thetford
Methodist Church Unveils Peace Pole On July 9th the latest Peace Pole to be installed in Thetford was unveiled in the garden of the Methodist Church on Tanner Street. The original idea for a peace pole was thought up by Masahisa Goi in Japan 1955, with the first installed outside of Japan in 1983. Since then 180,00 have been placed in over 180 countries around the world. Today the project is promoted by the World Peace Prayer Society. Each peace pole is inscribed with the words ‘May Peace Prevail on Earth’. Speaking about the project Church Minister, Ken Nicholls said “ Peace Poles have been placed in such notable locations as the magnetic North Pole, tHiroshima Peace Memorial, the site of the Pyramids in Giza and Robin Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Many are in schools, churches, temples synagogues, mosques and community parks around the world. That's why we want a Peace Pole here, to signify our intention to work for peace.” In his speech, Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Terry Jermy said “We are aware of so much in the world that troubles us and that's what makes something like a Peace Pole much more relevant now than they ever were. Its a physical opportunity to come together, to want for a better world, for peace and to provide that space for reflection which is so important. Isn’t it wonderful that here in Thetford, we don’t just have one peace pole, but a number of them and there’s even plans to bring them together into a trail.” Thetford Young Business Group Summer Social
Launched in December 2015 at Thetford Business Forum, this group of enterprising young people has grown from strength to strength. Talking about the group Jake Shannon said “The idea is that normally networking is held by middle management & higher so generally they are older people. Younger people can find it quite intimidating or have little in common to start up a conversation, so we thought why not make one specifically for young people with the help and support of the existing Business Forum. They helped with the initial set up and costs. The idea of the summer social is to get everyone together and help raise money for a good cause, in this case it’s the Charles Burrell Centre.” The group hold monthly meetings with a speaker either on a specific subject or sharing a skill such as when Editor Andrew Fitchett talked about the type of stories news desks are looking for. The meetings are free to attend and a great way to develop new ideas, networks or increase your skill set. Business studies students and 6th formers are welcome. Alex from The Lively Crew added “I meet new contacts, every month, I enjoy meeting new people and it’s a good thing to do outside of work.” To attend the next meeting on Wednesday 21st September please contact Alex Long alex@thelivelycrew.co.uk Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

ZIMBE! By Cecily White
On the 13th July we were invited to watch the Thetford Singer’s performance of Alexander L’Estrange’s Zimbe! Thetford Singer’s invited Admirals Academy to join them to bring the songs and music of Africa to Thetford in the Carnegie rooms. The adult choir consisted of 40 singers and 32 children from Admirals Academy taking part. Wearing tops showing the colours of Africa, the group opened the show with a big number called ‘Njooni! Zimbe!’ accompanied by a lively jazz band. This song gave the audience a small taster of what to expect from the rest of the evening. Brian Robinson set the scene by reading poems and pieces of writing about Africa to break up the music. The young school children sung their hearts out and really got involved with the performance, putting smiles on the faces of the audience. Parents and people of all ages attended the show and danced in their seats to the sound of the choir. Chris Parsons, Thetford Singer’s musical director, did a really fantastic job of conducting both choirs and the band all of whom had only got together 2 hours before the performance began! Huge congratulations to everyone who performed as it really was a night to remember.
Weeting Steam Engine Rally
Engines and over 140 tractors from across the country were on display at the annual rally. This year the sun was out & visitors were entertained by heavy horses, Flyin Ryan with his motorbike stunts and chainsaw carving, alongside well loved demonstrations such as steam powered farm machinery. With something for everyone, it was a great day out! Picture: Kate Lee
Admirals Academy bids
farewell to Mrs Petty
About Thetford was delighted to be invited to join a very special surprise tea party. After 33 years of dedicated service, one of Thetford’s most popular teachers is bidding farewell to the classroom. Originally Mrs Petty started her teaching career at Raleigh Infants, before moving next door to Admirals Academy where she enjoyed a variety of roles from class teacher, SENCO to Vice Principal. “It’s been magic! I’ve known every head that’s ever been and every member of staff since our infancy. I’ve been very lucky. Some of my highlights are the pantomimes & performances with the children because I’ve been in them with them. And the residential trips because you always see everyone in a different light.” Mrs Petty has taught generations of Thetford children including the current Deputy Head next door at Raleigh Infants, and is fondly remembered by many.

3rd Thetford Scout Group Celebrates Its Heritage Local Cubs are celebrating 100 years since they let their older brothers know that they could not have all the fun, and more recently Beavers are 30 years old. To mark this occasion, 3rd Thetford Scout Group would like people to come and share their Scouting experiences with them on Saturday 10th September. We are a relatively new group being founded in 1973 and we have about 100 young people and 20 leaders, but we are aware that many people in our community have been in the Scouting movement, either here or elsewhere, and we invite them to come and see what we get up to today and see maybe what they did in years past.

Heritage Celebration Event
Reliable and professional plastering service.
Location: Kilverstone Hall Estate, Thetford. IP24 2RL Date & Time: Saturday 10th September 2-6pm Bring along old neckers or badges, memories and photos. We understand that Scouting was alive in 1917 in Thetford - was it going before then? Does anyone have details of the closed Scout groups 1st, 2nd, 4th and was there a 5th Thetford? Share your memories with our young people as they compile the Thetford Scouting Archive through interviews and photos to act as a legacy to this exciting milestone in Scouting history. We are having an exhibition of very modern equipment and comparing that with how things were when Baden-Powell was starting this adventure. See today’s young people enjoying the Scouting way and you may be amazed to see it does not differ widely from your own experiences.

Solicitors’ Support Dementia Group
Village Church Encourages Visitors
Ashtons Legal are big supporters of local and national charities. For a number of years their staff have annually nominated charities to support over a 12 month period and have raised thousands of pounds for good causes.
The Victorian architectural gem which is St. Ethelbert’s Church at Wretham (IP24 1RL) is using August as a month for an experiment in raising visitor numbers.
Ashtons Solicitors recently presented Thetford and District Dementia Support with a donation of £2500. Christine Findall, on far left, is a Secretary with Ashtons Solicitors and is daughter-in-law to a TADDS volunteer, Ron Findall. Receiving the cheque are the officers, volunteers and clients of the group.
The 150 year old church, set in the only Conservation Area in the 300 population village, holds two services a month and, while it is normally closed at other times, can be opened for anyone who wants to see inside. When regular mowing operations are under way in the churchyard, visitors often ask to tour the building. In August, an experiment will see St. Ethelbert open on each of the four Sundays, 7th,, 14th, 21st and 28th, between 10.30am and 4.30pm, when church members will be on hand to welcome people, offer refreshment and answer questions. The church has a display in its north aisle focussed on the role of Czech and Polish aircrew who flew from the village during WW2 and a fully illustrated 72 page guide book, first published in 2010, is on sale for £3.
Vanessa Deacon from TADDS said: We are very Thetford and District Dementia Support grateful to Ashtons for their support. Can You Help Provide A Lifeline To Older People In Norfolk? For some people, growing older can bring about social isolation, anxiety, frailty and loss of independence. Age UK Norfolk is the first and most trusted port of call for so many older people and their families. We work hard to engage with older people and respond to their needs; our support services reach out to those who need help and enable them to enjoy later life. But the vital link in this chain of life is often the volunteer – people from all walks of life, and of all ages, who feel they can make a difference.Volunteers are the lifeblood and backbone of Age UK Norfolk. The success and efficiency of our services are dependent upon the people who generously donate their time, experience and compassion, and we currently are in urgent need of new volunteers to be able to continue supporting older people living in Norfolk!

Aged 19 - 99? Nothing on TV - again? Need a new interest?
Loneliness can have a devastating impact on the lives of older people and it’s on the rise - which is why we’re urging new volunteers to commit to just one call a week, a call that can make all the difference to a lonely older person. Age UK Norfolk’s Telephone Befriending volunteers love nothing more than brightening someone’s day, whether it’s by having a friendly chat, completing a fun quiz or simply laughing together about something funny that has happened during the week.
Why not try indoor shortmat bowling? We are offering a series of FREE INFORMAL LESSONS to anyone interested in this popular sport which is easy to learn, friendly and sociable. The 2 hour sessions will begin on Wednesday 31 August from 6pm to 8.00 pm and will last for 4 weeks. . Bowls will be provided, but please wear soft, flat soled shoes (or just socks). Please ring Pauline on 01953 717275 to reserve a place, or just turn up at the clubhouse in Church Road, East Harling (opposite the Church) We look forward to seeing you.
We also have opportunities helping older people keep up with their paperwork from banks, building societies, landlords etc, which can become too much to cope with. At any one time, Age UK Norfolk is providing ongoing support to over 250 older people, with the help of their volunteers. We are looking for people with a basic experience of handling household finances who could spare time to help older people to stay independent. These are examples of just a few of the roles available. We have a wide range of roles in established services, and depending on your talents and interests, there is bound to be an opportunity where you can share your knowledge, learn new skills, make new

Thetford U3A Welcomes New Members Every month Thetford U3A has an influx of new members, retired and semi-retired people in the area willing to share their knowledge and life experiences and continue to learn from others. That's what the U3A is all about. Meeting with like-minded individuals and learning together, not for qualifications but for the sheer enjoyment of discovery. At a recent new members welcome meeting, eleven new members attended. There was a short talk about Thetford U3A, followed by a questions and answers session. New members happily chatted with each other over a drink. Some had already joined one or more of the many interest groups. Trustee, Vivienne Enefer, one of the Group Coordinators said, “Thetford U3A has really given retired people in this area a chance to continue keeping their minds and bodies in good shape. We cover an incredible range of subjects, as well as sporting and social activities. It amazes me that members keep coming up with new ideas, not just for new interest groups, but for ways to contribute to the local community as well. For example, the Woodwork Group learned that residents of The Red House Care Home were having difficulty leaning over a
table when painting and drawing. So they designed and built some easels for them. A really simple but effective solution.” If you are interested in Thetford U3A, please contact us through our website at www.thetfordu3a.org, or come along to one of our monthly meetings at the Carnegie Room (opposite the Library). The August talk, Clive Regulous on “A year in the life of a celebrity booker” promises to be a bit of an eye-opener. Free to members but non-members are also welcome for a donation of £2 which is refundable if they join on the day. Deadline for inclusion in the September edition will be the 15th August

Most nights will be spent in a tent, hopefully on a nice camp site but he will have a back- up vehicle to take him to performance venues. The longest day will be the last day, which is approximately 25 miles from Byrness to Kirk Yetholm on the Scottish border. He says he will need to average 15 miles a day in all. His walk also includes part of Hadrian’s Wall; an 80 mile walk Vince has enjoyed before and not to be under estimated. The Riversdale Centre is important to Thetford; it acts as a haven for those who may be unfortunate enough to find life is more than difficult and are in need. It is advisable to remove the side shoots springing from the base as they will not have time to produce fruit in our climate. In contrast the mini-sweetcorn (the sort you eat at 4 inches long) does not need to be fertilised. This means you can grow it in rows and in fact it is best to cut off the tassel (tuft on top which produces the pollen) as you want to concentrate all the plant’s energy on producing lots of cobs. (Yum!)
Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Gardening Notes - August Now that the first flush of blooms is fading, plants whose appeal lies in their interesting leaf shape and colour come into their own. Five years ago I had never heard of heucheras, now I search these out at plant sales and am keen to add them to my borders. I think they must have become widely available quite recently as I have not heard of a different “everyday” name. The range of colour in the leaf is wide, from lemon yellow to darkest purple with a marmalade orange my favourite. The reverse of the leaf is sometimes different from the front which is very striking. Their special merit is that they seem very happy in our soil, can cope with limited rain and go on looking good all season. They form a neat clump, 12-18 inches across and 6 inches high; the flower is reminiscent of London Pride so quite pretty but not showy. If you are going on holiday this month you should trim back flowering plants if there is a chance of a further flowering. Try to harden your heart and take off blooms currently in flower, then the buds can swell up while you are away and you won’t come back to a lot of dead flower heads. If you have a “garden buddy” you can keep the essentials ticking over for one another; you can’t leave hanging baskets, tomatoes in the greenhouse and tubs sitting in the sunshine for long. Any real gardener will be happy to help out with this sort of task – it is painful to watch plants dying for want of a can of water. In the vegetable garden your runner beans have probably reached the top of their support. Nip the tops off at this stage to encourage side shoots and prevent the crop forming out of reach. It must have been a very mild winter as a couple of runner beans roots sent up shoots where I had left them in the ground. I have never seen this before (though my best potatoes are often those that grow independently in strange places). I have planted these survivors with the other plants and hope they provide a crop. Sweetcorn is quite a favourite in our house and I grow two types. The usual large sweetcorn needs to be planted in blocks rather than rows as it is wind-pollinated.
No evening meeting this month; instead the club BBQ is being held at 4pm on Saturday 20th August on the London Road site. This is a free event for members though a contribution to the eats or the purchase of a few raffle tickets is appreciated; £2.50 for guests so if you have hungry visitors, bring them along as there is always lots of splendid food. If you have ideas for the club, this is a good opportunity to buttonhole a committee member and discuss your thoughts – anyway, we can all grumble about the weather... Tone Up Several years ago when I first did my training, toners were a product we used to act as an astringent and help remove any trace of cleanser which may have been left on the skin. They often had a drying tightening effect because they contained a high percentage of alcohol. This resulted in stripping off the skin’s NMF, the natural moisturising factor which would leave the skin vulnerable to surface dehydration and the penetration of pollutants and airborne bacteria.

As a consequence there seemed to be a drop in trend to use toners and some miss the process out all together. Toners became the black sheep of the family! Today, the modern toner is a very different animal, it has been dramatically reformulated. Most toners contain a cocktail of active ingredients, botanicals, plant extracts, essential oils to name a few and are highly effective at hydrating the skin with humectant properties. In fact, they are very much an essential part of any skin care routine. Many of them are available in a spray form and are designed with many different skin types in mind, for example, to replenish, calm, brighten, and rebalance. Another advantage of being in a spray form is the toner may be applied in the morning after cleansing and then throughout the day over makeup as a refreshing spritz.

s first twinning of archaeological sites
A series of special events have marked the twinning on July 14th of two exceptional archaeological sites, the Neolithic Flint Mines of Grime’s Graves and the Hoshikuso Obsidian Mines in Japan. Thought to be a world first, the event was attended by civic dignitaries from Thetford & Japan. An international conference featuring speakers from the British Museum, The University of Tokyo, Meiji University, Newcastle University and the UEA, a schools workshop and family day cemented the close links the two towns have despite being separated by two continents. 14 Young Obsidian Ambassadors also travelled to Thetford, following in the footsteps of Ancient House Museum’s Teenage History Club who travelled to Nagawa last year. Speaking about the events Jan Summerfield from English Heritage said “We are delighted to be involved in such a unique partnership and to be working together to promote the importance and Neolithic heritage of both sites.” At the family day, visitors were able to watch a Napoleonic soldier firing a flint lock musket, observe flint knapping, demonstrations of Jomon (Japanese Neolithic) cooking, make a clay pot and have a go at Obsidian knapping.
Artist in Residence For the third year running Dan Morgan is returning as Ancient House Artist in Residence from 23 August to 1 September. In 2014 Dan took used the museum’s pottery collections and Sir Thomas Brown’s “Hydriotaphia – Urne-Buriall” to produce still lives. In 2015 the focus was on flint. This year Thetford’s revolutionary son, Thomas Paine is the inspiration. A highlight of this year’s residency is a workshop for local children and teenagers. Speaking about the workshop Melissa Hawker, Learning Officer said: “We are thrilled that Dan will be sharing his model painting skills with our visitors. Anyone out there who plays Warhammer or other table top wargames can learn Dan’s top tips for model painting to wow other players.” Dan’s workshop is on Saturday 27 August . Artist’s Statement Last year for my residency in the museum I created the two model flint miners for the ‘Flint Rocks’ exhibition. Having for most of my creative life combined painting and drawing with all kinds of model-making activities, I have never really been about any perceived dichotomy between the two activities. So this summer I am looking forward to creating another model to fit in with the museum’s exhibits. The young Thomas Paine must have walked regularly down White Hart Street, past the Ancient House in the 18th Century; and I intend to make a diorama scene of him proclaiming the stirring of his republican thoughts in the streets of Thetford. This year, rather than creating figures ‘from scratch’, I will be using some produced by a friends of mine in Lewes (the town Paine moved to, when he left Thetford). Some of these Tom Paine figures – painted gold to echo the statue in King Street – will be hidden around the museum at this time; to create a ‘Where’s Tommy?’ trail for children. I am looking forward to bringing this glimpse of the town’s history to life.

Property rise or fall? What does Brexit mean for the UK property market... In the run up to the referendum, local estate agents reported that they experienced a drop in new instructions, as sellers appeared cautious on whether to sell now or wait until the market held more certainty. The immediate impact to the Bury St Edmunds housing market appears evident that a fall in housing turnover will potentially lead to a hold on house price growth, as sellers and buyers adopt a wait and see approach. Bank of England’s Mark Carney spoke immediately after the Prime Minister’s resignation to reassure the financial markets. Including those who have invested and those looking to invest in the property market, he asserted that he will not hesitate to take any additional measures required. These measures could include a cut in interest rates to 0.25% that could in turn reduce monthly mortgage payments. Many potential purchasers will be adopting the wait and see approach to see whether this will actually take effect.
Shazad Butt - Property Specialist talks about what Brexit means to UK property owners.
T
he UK has decided it’s fate to exit the EU, but what will this mean for the UK property market and more importantly, Bury St Edmunds’ property market?
Before the referendum took place, the Remain camp made it clear that a Brexit could cause the property market to collapse. It is still too early to speculate whether this will happen, but so far the notion of the property market collapsing is far fetched. Zoopla, the online property giant along with George Osborne believe the average UK property value may fall by 18%. Maybe a little extreme in their predictions but not one to out rule at this early stage. According to Nationwide Building Society’s latest index, house prices crept slightly higher in June 2016 by 0.2% but the effect of the Brexit vote on the market has yet to be felt in the upcoming months.
The first half of 2016 has been an interesting time for the UK property market with stamp duty changes, more challenging conditions for investors and most recently the EU referendum. When there is uncertainty amongst society, confidence is affected, which in turn affects decision making. Those people deciding whether to sell or purchase a property may now decide to delay that decision until the market has more certainty and stability. As we move forward in the post-Brexit Britain, it is expected that the market will slow down around the local area and prices will soften but not fall. First time buyers may find it a little easier to get onto the property ladder with further positive news if interests rates are further reduced.

The Inner Game
It’s a tough, long road and can really dent your self esteem. Don’t let it! Keep going, remember why you started and play the long game. 2. Take in a biography: Chances are you’re not the first person to embark on your journey. Reading bios of people who have made this trip before give you food for thought, insight and inspiration. It will help speed up your success rate especially if the bio shows you how not to reinvent the wheel. 3. Hobbies: Finding and nurturing new hobbies helps relax you and take your mind off work. It allows you to be creative and surprisingly it often leads to breakthroughs and finding solutions to problems while also giving you a chance to meet future business partners. 4. Seek advice: Building an informal network of skilled and knowledgeable advisors is a must. Their trusted help will help you overcome issues which we will all face especially if they cut right to the heart of the matter. 5. Learn to enjoy: With all new things we have to live outside our comfort zone, if you enjoy the process and treat building the business as a game you’ll get so much more out of it.
by Ryan Windsor It’s often said that to be successful we have to play two games. One outer and one inner. Most focus on the latter, making sure they are seen as successful, confident, outgoing and coping with tasks set with ease. But this is not always the case. So what is the inner game I’m talking about? It’s how you think, feel and perceive the world. These things often are thought of as secondary but to me and many others, mastering the inner game is the first step to success and happiness. “There is always an inner game being played in your mind no matter what outer game you are playing. How you play this game usually makes the difference between success and failure” -Tim Gallwey It’s a fundamental shift in your mindset that can really boost every area of your life. Most people start a business wanting to make money; only they don’t reflect on their true inner value system and passions, therefore struggle to get things running and their business starts to become a Grind. Now if you work on the inner game, shift your mindset and become fully congruent with yourself you’ll love the grind and hustle of entrepreneurship. Soon it will be more about the journey and development than the destination.

Tax Clinic, by Colin Chamberlain BREXIT – The Tax Implications On 23 June the UK decided to leave the EU. At this stage, it is impossible to predict the full consequences of that decision as it will depend on the outcome of negotiations surrounding the UK’s exit. These negotiations will take place over the next two years or so. In this article, I intend to just touch upon some of the relevant issues that may impact on the UK tax system as a result of Brexit. Corporation Tax The first announcement on tax occurred in the days immediately after the referendum when George Osborne, the now former Chancellor of the Exchequer, said that he intends to reduce the UK’s corporation tax rate to 15%. The rate is currently 20% and prior to Brexit there were plans in place for it to be reduced to 17% by 2020. The reason for this announcement is to incentivise multi-national businesses to remain in the UK. It remains to be seen if the new Chancellor will also adopt this policy. Corporation tax is a UK tax, but nevertheless over recent years it has been significantly shaped by EU law and EU directives. There have been some notable successful challenges at the Court of Justice of the European Union (‘CJEU’) on the grounds that UK tax law was in breach of the freedoms enshrined in the EU Treaty. In theory therefore, the UK will no longer be bound by decisions of the CJEU, although it remains to be seen to what extent the UK will rewrite its tax code to eliminate these decisions. One particular area that affects the levels of certain UK tax reliefs (eg: tax relief on research and development expenditure) is the EU’s legislation in respect of state aid. However, the UK’s ability to ignore these rules is likely to impact on the terms of any future deals with the EU.
Customs Duties The EU is a customs union. Therefore, goods are supplied freely within the EU without the imposition of customs duties. Unless an equivalent trade agreement is negotiated with the EU, exports and imports of goods between the UK and the EU will become more expensive as they will be subject to customs duties. The effects will extend beyond the EU as well, because of the favourable trading terms the UK has with other countries, as a result of being a member of the EU. VAT VAT is a truly European tax. UK VAT legislation has had to fall in line with the EU Principal VAT Directive. In recent years, the UK has had to repay significant amounts of VAT to businesses for failing to comply with the EU Directive. Therefore, it is likely, that the UK Government will have more freedom in future when formulating its VAT policy. Individuals and Personal Tax Individuals who own properties in other EU states could find that they are no longer protected from the punitive tax and social charges that are imposed by some EU countries on non-EU/EEA nationals (such as France where taxes on capital gains can be as much as 49%). However, future negotiations between the UK and the EU may secure continued protection. Social Security Contributions Workers who are nationals of one EU member state but who live and work in another EU state are currently only required to pay social security contributions in one state. Hopefully agreements can be reached so that such arrangements can continue. Conclusion This is undoubtedly a period of uncertainty for the UK, but it is hoped that favourable deals will be negotiated with the EU in the coming months. It is too early at this stage to accurately predict what the final tax implications will be and, in my view, in most areas, immediate action is unlikely to be necessary. Citizens Advice Bureau I’ve applied for a job at an accountancy firm, but they’ve emailed to say that I would need to take a three month training course which costs £4,000 first. I’m keen on the job, but should I pay for the training? Some employers do ask you to pay for training, but will normally take the cost from your wages rather than asking you to pay in advance. Asking for up-front payments is one of the classic signs of a scam, so it’s important you do some research on the firm before parting with any cash.
scam or have been scammed, will often post on forums or social media. Genuine companies will usually have client reviews outside of just their own website. If you spot something that doesn’t sit right and you want a second opinion visit the Citizens Advice website www.citizensadvice.org.uk. If you don’t have internet access you could pop into our Breckland House office (opposite the bus interchange – we are open Tues-Fri, 9.30-2.30) or call us on 01842 752777.
Start by checking if they have a website. If there isn’t a website, they are unlikely to be legitimate. Pay close attention to their email address too - look to see if they are using a personal email account such as Gmail or Hotmail, rather than one that’s branded. Next, check how they describe their company - if they are an Ltd or Plc they should be listed on the companies house website. If you can’t find them there, they probably aren’t real.

News from Thetford Probus Atomic Base Veiled In Secrecy The 20th century’s Cold War between the West and the communist bloc might be a distant memory, but on the outskirts of Thetford there remains a chilling reminder of those days as members of Probus Club discovered when they visited the Gorse Industrial Estate.
Probus members with Keith Eldred (third from left) at the top of one of the 50ft-high watchtowers. From left: Mike Brindle, David Wood and Gerald Goucher.
During the 1950s and early 60s the site situated close to RAF Barnham, stored and maintained an arsenal of deadly atomic weapons, which formed part of Britain’s nuclear deterrent. With owner Keith Eldred as their guide, the visitors were given a tour of 23-acre site that still resonates its history as one of the Cold War’s most top secret bases. The two high perimeter fences, a 75ft-wide strip of ‘no man’s land’, watchtowers and guardhouses are all still much the same.
During the tour the visitors saw a near completed reconstruction of the awesome ‘Blue Danube’ atomic bomb. Fortunately this one has no fissile material, but nonetheless its size and shape echoes an ominous power of devastation. Visitors heard how Mr Eldred and his wife became owners of the site and the various uses – at one time it was Norfolk’s largest producer of mushrooms – and over coffee in the visitor centre they were shown videos made by the UEA. They were also told about conservation and wildlife aspects of the estate which includes many bird boxes.
The bunkers and other reinforced buildings are also intact, many of them now used as industrial units by local businesses. Some are being restored and renovated like four of the five watchtowers with help of grants from English Heritage because the site, a Scheduled Monument, is regarded as an important and unique record of a critical period when the threat of a Third World War was at its highest. Mr Eldred explained that although the purpose of the site was never known by the public, one rumour put around was that monkeys were being trained there in preparation for going into Space. It was likely that the Soviets knew about the site, so an element of subterfuge was also employed by building more storage ‘hutches’ than were ever needed. The impression would have been that there were many more bombs than actually existed.

The July meeting of the Thetford Society began with information on the latest Society events. The trip to the Cromer Pier Show would go ahead, although the BBQ had to be cancelled. Members received copies of the June newsletter with details of current Thetford issues which the Society is involved with, especially concerns over graffiti and the need for appropriate maintenance in the conservation area. Parking questions were raised in view of the forthcoming temporary closure of School Lane car park.

Fine Night For St Ethelbert’s Church Summer Party Earlier fears of a washout as torrential rain hit the village were unfounded as St Ethelbert’s Church at Wretham staged its annual summer party at Wretham Lodge, at the invitation of owner Gordon Alexander. The 80 plus visitors took the chance of a fine evening to tour the NGS gardens of the former rectory before settling in for a convivial evening, with their host providing wine and soft drink and a dining table packed with buffet food for every taste, produced by church members.
1st Glass WindowCleaning The reach & Wash System No ladders • Purified Water eco friendly
The evening made a profit of £1199, not least through the efforts of Rector’s wife Glynis Baker with a raffle, which produced over £300. It was appropriate that, when the Rector (the Rev Canon Bob Baker) drew the winning numbers, both he and his wife each gained a prize at this, their last Summer Party before retirement.

Fly Tipping Officer’s Report Over the last month, it has been great to see so many residents reporting fly tipping via the Breckland website or to Flagship Housing via the Flagship Response phone number. I understand how frustrated people get when they see a fly tip, particularly in a ‘hot spot’ or one that is particularly large in size and turn to Facebook to vent their feelings. However, it takes the same amount of time to complete the on line form with all of the details and you can add a photograph too. With the school summer holidays here, please encourage your children to put their litter in a bin or in their pocket to bring it home to put in your bin. Every little helps and making children and young people aware of the part they can play in keeping their environment clean is an important ethic for later life.
Pictured above - Barbara with some young people who have been learning about recycling.
Vicarage Road Ward Residents’ Association The Vicarage Road Ward Residents' Association meets on the last Wednesday of every second month, at 7pm, in the Deer's Leap. The next meeting is on 31st August. This Association is for residents of Vicarage Road, Wheatacres, Glebe Close, the north side of London Road and the east side of Croxton Road. For further information or to suggest items for the agenda, please contact Councillor Colin Burnett at: cburnett839@btinternet.com
Please also teach them the dangers of playing with fly tipped rubbish as I often find rotting food, sharps, broken objects, car batteries, glass etc. Old fridges, freezers and washing machines are an obvious danger as children like to hide inside them.

The Benjamin Foundation Celebrates Most Successful Butterfly Walk To Date More than 300 people took to the trails at High Lodge in Thetford on Sunday 10th July, to take part in the Benjamin Foundation’s annual Butterfly Walk. Children and families enjoyed a leisurely walk and general knowledge quiz trail, raising more than £3,000 in the process. All of the proceeds will go towards the charity’s service Meet Up in Thetford, which is in desperate need of £30,000 for essential building repairs; in order to keep its services for families, young people and senior citizens in the community running. Mike Towndrow, manager of Meet Up who took part in the Butterfly Walk, said: “We are delighted that the Butterfly Walk was such a great success. The £3,000 raised is a hugely valuable contribution to our current fundraising drive to help fix our building and keep services for people of all ages within our community running. Over 100 young people regularly attend youth clubs at Meet Up, Babies as young as six months come with their parents to our toddler group and older members of the community enjoy our senior citizens lunch club where they are provided with a hot meal”.

New Sponsor For Bulldog Belles Thetford Bulldog Belles Under 16’s would like to thank their new kit sponsor Atlantis Fish Bar, Admirals Way Thetford for sponsoring them their new kit this season. Belles have been busy since they finished their season with some football tournaments, playing at Sprowston 5 a side, Waveney 6 a side and Bedford. At Sprowston they finished 5th and 6th, at Waveney they finished 3rd and at Bedford they finished 1st. Picture: Thetford Bulldog Belles with their new kit sponsor, Admirals Fish Bar For more information, contact Kirsty at Thetford Bulldogs on 07771 744437
The Bedford Tournament was a 11 v 11. The Belles travelled down the evening before with their manager and parents. Belles started their first game at 11 v 11 with a draw against City Belles. Their next game against Flitwick Eagles (tournament organisers) saw Belles winning 3-0. Goal scorers were Mellisia Boulton, Shannon Richardson and Kamila Omelativa.Their next game was against the team that they were drawing on points with, and again with yet another great game it was a draw, but Belles went to the top of the leader board as they had 1 goal difference. They then had to play City Belles again in the semi’s and seeing as the first game had been a draw, it was very even, going to extra time and then penalities. Thetford went 2nd, but City put their 1st in, Mel stepped up 1st for Thetford and made it 1-1.City then got their 2nd in, but Hannah Rogers made it 2-2. Gk Thea Gosling then saved the next City penalty, and Kamila put it to 2-3, Thea then saved another City penalty. Shannon stepped up for Thetford and took them into the final. The final itself was again another close game as in the previous game against Woburn & Wavendon Lionesses it had been a draw. Yet again another great game from both teams, which resulted in the game going to extra time, before Mellisia made it 1-0. Thetford Bulldogs Belles won the final - well done to the whole team. It was a great team performance, as with all their tournaments they played some great football coming up against some fantastic teams. Congratulations to all involved.

Pregnancy Pilates Are you or do you know any expecting mums in the early weeks of pregnancy? I’m releasing an exciting new programme and looking for mummies to bloom throughout their pregnancy. I appreciate some may have not announced yet so please feel free to private message me.
What’s Available
Classes - Pilates Stretch - Pilates - Fitness Yoga - PiYO - Ab Blast - Complete Conditioning - Weight Management KSFL - Clean Eating Cooking 1.1 & Small Group - Personal Training - Weight Management KSFL - Back & Hip Release - Transformation Bootcamp - Self Esteem Package
From September I am looking to run Mummy & Bump Pilates sessions, they will run on block bookings 4 weeks at a time. One morning and one evening - to be confirmed. But, I’m also considering a ‘Pilates in Pregnancy’ book. I would like to use real women going through real pregnancies to share their stories as let’s be honest, some have little symptoms, others experience severe sickness, some develop a neat bump while others pile on the pounds. In a time when we should be enjoying our growing bump it can be scary. I want to hear your stories, during various meetings or communication via email, you share your memories on when you found out, your symptoms, we then go through the trimesters and I use your story to inspire others. This programme will offer you free photo shoots throughout the pregnancy and on arrival of your bundle of love, a free private support group whereby you can ask questions about exercise and nutrition. I’m just finalising a midwife coming on board to support the programme and you will receive discounted exercise sessions and having just trained as a Pelvic Floor Specialist, I’m the right person to know for post baby. Please private message me asap to discuss further. Michelle Jermy Mobile: 07725582817 E-mail: michelle@michellejermyfitness.co.uk

The recipient of the Student of the Month award for June 2016 is Hannah Davies. Hannah is 10 years old and currently working towards her blue belt. She works incredibly hard in each and every class and listens closely to feedback from our instructors. Her skill level and competence in all aspects of our martial art has improved impressively over recent weeks and she is fantastic example to other students. In addition to this she is exceptionally well behaved, polite and always smiling. Congratulations Hannah and keep up the good work! Mel’s One in a Hundred!
AYd D N r
In 2010, Mel Sturman turned 40 and decided that despite not doing any sport since she was at school, it was time to get fit. Since then in the past 6 years Mel’s running adventures have taken her across the country and Europe and her medal hoard has to be one of the most impressive in Thetford. Mel started her marathon running in 2011, inspired by Paula Radcliffe by completing the London Marathon. Since then she has run an astonishing 166 marathons and ultra marathons, including recently first female to complete 10 in 10 days at Barrow, for third time.

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Thetford, Brandon, Mundford,
Croxton, Barnham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
