THETFORD PAST AND PRESENT
Ford Street was once known as Gaol Lane and before that this part of the town formed the south side of Thetford’s market place. The market closed in 1786 and buildings erected in its place. After the medieval market cross was taken down, a ‘big house’ named Ford Place was built at the east end of the former market place in the 1790s. The past photograph was taken about 1900. Do I have to be an expert baker? No. The aim of Free Cakes for Kids is to help families who find it difficult to provide a homemade birthday cake for a child. For many of these children receiving a homemade birthday cake, perhaps with their name on it or in the shape of something they really like, will make a real difference whatever the cake looks like and there are no expectations that cakes look professional.
Free Cakes for Kids Thetford are looking for volunteers who are willing to make a birthday cake for a child in the Thetford area. The idea behind Free Cakes for Kids is simple; we match enthusiastic bakers with families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child.
Who covers the costs of the ingredients? Volunteers are usually expected to cover the costs of their ingredients. If we have funds available (from donations) then when a referral comes in, the volunteer may be offered £5 towards ingredient cost. I always state on the cake requests whether there will be anything available to the baker. Local business' have also offered support so if it is ingredient costs putting you off, get involved!
What do I have to do? Once a cake request comes in, I post it on our Facebook group so the volunteers who are able to make the cake can comment offering to bake. After 24 hours I will then select a volunteer from the list. My choice is determined by who has baked before, making sure new volunteers get a chance and also location.
Do I have to commit to making a certain number How will the cake be delivered? This will vary with each different referral. In most cases of cakes? No. You might make one cake a year, you might volunteer bakers should expect to deliver the cake to make one a month; it really is up to you. Becoming a a public location in and around the Thetford area. Our volunteer baker is flexible; you can fit it round your last birthday cake was given to the family directly at a commitments and bake when you have the time. There garage. Sometimes they're given to the support worker. Happy Faces Quarter Page Ad_Layout 1 13/07/2015 1 Our most popular hand over place is Tesco. is no pressure to bake. On the hunt for DNA! The Year 4 and 5 children at Thetford Grammar School had a wonderful time being DNA detectives for the afternoon. They experienced lots of hands-on activities which gave them an insight into the fascinating world of DNA.
Government funded pre school for children 2 years to 5 years Child led learning through play Absolutely free 15 hours a week, choose your sessions, Monday to Friday 9-12 12-3 term time
Pupils found out what DNA was, where it is found and also had the opportunity to extract DNA from kiwi fruit. The session concluded with the children gathering DNA from a crime scene in order to find out who had been stealing from the sweet jar! One pupil said “I loved it and thought it was amazing and interesting” while another commented “I had a lot of fun and learnt so much about DNA”. A great time was had by all!

Calling all local businesses!
Local Usborne books organiser, Hannah Butler-Hand, has teamed up with School Lane Surgery as part of a Community Book Pledge project in order to provide books for the children’s area of the waiting room.
What is a Community Book Pledge? Local businesses are contacted to see if they would like to support our NHS services by making a donation towards the purchase of new books.
Not a business but want to take part? Any personal donations would be very much appreciated. Maybe you want to show your appreciation for the service you or your family have received at the surgery? This is the perfect way to say thank you!
Why is this an important community project? An inviting waiting area for children makes the experience of going to the Doctors a less apprehensive one. The books help the children to feel comfortable and at ease, especially at a time when they themselves may be unwell. It also provides the opportunity for children to immerse themselves in literacy and the world of books.
Hannah Butler-Hand, Independent Usborne Organiser
How can you donate? Any amount you are able to donate will be greatly appreciated and directly pays for new books (there is no additional charge for Hannah’s services or for the delivery of books). Please send a cheque made payable to School Lane Surgery, labelled on the reverse with your business name, to: Community Book Pledge, C Osterberg, The Surgery, School Lane, Thetford, IP24 2AG by Monday 21st August 2015. If you would like a book plaque in the books bought with your donation to advertise your business, please include an additional £5 and note this with the cheque.

What is in it for me? Supporting our community is important and your role as a local business is invaluable. Little things can sometimes make the biggest difference! Use this as an opportunity to help improve our local services, bring beautiful books into the hands of children and optionally advertise your business too.

News from Thetford Probus Talk paints a picture of art
Members of Thetford Probus were treated to a guided tour of some of Britain’s great art galleries in a wide-ranging talk entitled ‘Discovering Art’ given by one of their own members. Tony Dobbin’s passion for art quickly became apparent as he spoke about the many galleries that he has visited, among them The Bowes at Barnard Castle, with the silver swan as its star attraction and the Saltaire at Bradford, where much of David Hockney’s work can be seen. He also highlighted the wonderful galleries closer to home such as the Fitzwilliam at Cambridge, Norwich Castle, the Sainsbury’s Centre and the Wolsey Gallery in Ipswich. Another gallery that he recommended visiting was Kettles Yard in Cambridge – a rare gem in a domestic setting. Illustrating many of his favourite paintings appropriately using a large blank canvas, he emphasized the rich art heritage of East Anglia from Gainsborough and Constable, Cotman, Crome and Stannard of the Norwich School to more recent painters such as Munnings and Seago. His talk focused mainly on impressionism, but other genre were touched upon and he urged everyone to explore and enjoy art by visiting galleries whenever they could. He also encouraged everyone to draw and paint as a leisure pastime. Tony should know; as well as being a trustee of the Thetford’s University of the Third Age (U3A) he leads their Art Workshop which meets at the Small Court in the Guildhall on the third Thursday of each month. More details on the website at www.tu3a.org
One of the many pictures used to illustrate the talk; this one by local amateur painter Sheena Robson.
As the meeting was held on the 10th anniversay of the 7/7 bombings, members stood for a minute’s silence in memory of the 52 people who were killed and the many others injured by the terrorist atrocity.

Brandon Camera Club Start of a New Season I can’t quite believe that a whole year has swept past and we are already looking forward to another new and exciting season at Brandon & District Photographic Club! We will be opening our doors again on Wednesday September 2nd with an informal evening for members old and new, to discuss our fixtures for the coming year, find out more about the club and what it has to offer budding photographers as well as watch a rolling slide show of members’ past work – to tempt you further there will be free tea/coffee and delicious cake. Our calendar for the coming year will include tuition evenings on Flash Photography, Composition beyond the Thirds and The Secrets of the Crop Tool (Photoshop), as well our regulars – Pat’s Tips and a Q&A session – all your questions answered! There will also be a good array of Workshops throughout the year to help improve your understanding of your camera and not forgetting regular Competitions, judged, in the main, by recognised Federation Judges. This year we are also introducing a series of JPG competitions, judged by ourselves, which we hope will be great fun. This year’s Exhibition will be a little later than normal, on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th October – so please put these dates in your diary now. We will be featuring a History of Brandon & District through photography, so come and see if you can recognise any of your ancestors, grannies, aunts, uncles, cousins as well as see the high standard of work we produce. We look forward to seeing you at the Baptist Rooms, Brandon High Street – don’t hesitate, come in to find out more about us and visit our website on www.brandoncameraclub.co.uk
Thetford Lionesses Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses are delighted that President Dorothy, Secretary Lesley and Treasurer Ann would continue for a second year in their roles. A bouquet of flowers was presented to each. Pictured below are Lesley and Ann receiving their flowers.
The Lioness Club, with help from a generous public, raised £2,145.30 in the year 2014/2015. This money has been donated to the following charities: Clowns in the sky, Lomba Sewing Machine Project, Kit it out, Nepal, Cystic Fibrosis, St Nicholas Hospice, Wicken Fen, Silverline, Ebola, LCIF, Prairie Dog at Banham Zoo, Dogs Trust, and McMillan Cancer Care. Thank you for your help in helping us to help others. Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses enjoyed an outing to Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve. Ranger Lois took us out in a boat along the fen where we were fortunate to spot barn owls, a marsh harrier, reed warblers, ponies, and a variety of dragon flies as well as a vast display of plant life. A meal at the local pub gave opportunity thanks to Lois for taking time to give us a personal tour and to enjoy time out together.

VJ DAY - 70th ANNIVERSARY The war in Europe had ended formally on the 8th May 1945, but conflict still continued in the Far East. This year marks the 70th anniversary of VJ DAY, (Victory in Japan), and on the 15th August, a national day of commemoration will be held across the nation and Commonwealth for all those who were held as Japanese prisoners of war. With the end of the conflict in the Far East this was finally the end of World War Two. The commemoration will begin at 10am at the FEPOW (Far East Prisoner of War) Tree at the Nuns Bridges, which is dedicated to the men of the 18th Division who were taken prisoner by the Japanese. The Mayor of Thetford, with guests and standards of the Royal British Legion and RAFA, and other associations etc, will pay homage, the last post will be sounded, followed by a two minute silence and the laying of wreaths.
The Mayor of Thetford will welcome his guests and the gathering, then the Reverend Bob Baker will conduct a small service. A reading will be given by pupils from both the Thetford Grammer School and Thetford Academy. The last post will be sounded and a two minute silence will be observed. On the completion of the service, the parade will then march back up King’s Street to be dismissed. Upon the conclusion of the parade, dignitaries and all guests are invited back to the Royal British Legion Club where light refreshments will be available and the club will be open to receive guests during the day.
Upon returning to the town, the standards will join with contingencies from the Royal British Legion, RAFA, the Training Wing from RAF Honnington, and units from the local Army and Air cadet forces, and members of the Ex-Servicemen’s Club. At approximately 11.15am the parade will march down King’s Street to King’s House.
THE ASSOCIATION OF RAF REGIMENT WARRANT OFFICERS AND SENIOR NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS In February 2017, the RAF Regiment will celebrate its 75th Anniversary. As a contribution towards these celebrations, the Association of RAF Regiment Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers has undertaken ‘Project 17’. Project 17 is a fund raising venture with the aim of commissioning a fine art piece in Bronze and Granite, comprising an inverted Rifle and Bayonet, driven into the ground, with a combat helmet mounted on the butt of the weapon. It is an updated version of the time honoured way in which the unmarked battlefield graves of the fallen were identified. At RAF Honington, there is a wonderful memorial to those RAF Regiment personnel who lost their lives, either on operations or during peacetime activities. RAF Honington often hosts the families of those who are honoured here, either on the anniversary of their loss or at a particular time of the year. A short distance behind the memorial is the Garden of Reflection. This is a small garden area with benches, where they can sit, pause for thought and reflect. This association hopes to have the sculpture added to the area of the Garden of Reflection, in January 2017. I do hope you will agree that this is a very worthwhile cause, and will help to bring a great deal of comfort to the visiting families of those who gave their all, and made the ultimate sacrifice. We will remember them, we must remember them. Our fundraising efforts continue, but we do need a little help and we are seeking donations, no matter how small, to help us achieve our aim. Would you help us please?
Donations may be made directly to the project account as follows: Account Title: Project 17 Sort Code: 20-16-12 Account Number: 33634035 Please remember to identify yourself in the Reference section.
I thank you, on behalf of the association and all bereaved families. Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

planning strategy to overcome this, often families lost out on a nil rate band unless they took professional advice. The Labour Party, with Gordon Brown as Chancellor, introduced the concept of a transferable nil rate band between married couples and civil partners. Therefore, using today’s nil rate band of £325,000 per person, this means that a married couple or civil partners now have £650,000 between them without the prospect of wasting any of the nil rate band.
In the Summer Budget on 8th July, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, proposed measures that will, by April 2020, effectively achieve the current Conservative Government’s much heralded £1 million tax-free threshold for Inheritance Tax.
Proposals in the 2015 Summer Budget - For several years now the Conservatives have been talking about a £1million nil rate band and now unconstrained by their previous Liberal Democrat coalition partners, George Osborne explained his proposal to achieve that goal on 8 July. The proposal is to introduce an additional nil rate band for the main residence. This will be with effect from 6 April 2017 when a residence is passed on death to one or more direct descendants – eg children, grandchildren etc. The additional nil rate band will be phased in as follows:
In this article I am going to look both at the past and the future. I will give a brief history of the Inheritance Tax threshold (‘nil rate band’) and look at some of the detail behind the Chancellor’s latest proposals to get to the Holy Grail of £1 million.
Tax Year Additional Nil Rate Band £ 2017/18 100,000 2018/19 125,000 2019/20 150,000 2020/21 175,000
History - Death duties of one kind or another have been around in the UK since 1694. Although it was 200 years later before a single Estate Duty was introduced in the 1894 Finance Act. Estate Duty was replaced in 1975 by Capital Transfer Tax which was renamed Inheritance Tax in 1986.
By April 2020 therefore the combined nil rate band and additional nil rate band will be £325,000 + £175,000 = £500,000. The additional nil rate band will be transferable to a surviving spouse or civil partner so therefore by April 2020 the overall Inheritance Tax threshold for a couple will be £1 million. Mr Osborne also announced that he would be consulting on the possibility of including funds that replaced a property on a down-sizing within the additional nil rate band. There will also be provisions in the legislation to restrict the additional nil rate band on large estates – ie those exceeding £2 million.
Inheritance Tax – The Holy Grail of the £1 Million Tax Free Threshold
The concept of a nil rate band was first introduced to Estate Duty in 1914 under the First World War Government of Herbert Asquith. At that time the nil rate band was set at what today seems like an incredibly low amount of just £100. The figure then remained at £100 all the way through to 1946, when it was substantially increased to £2,000. Thereafter the nil rate band has been gradually increased over the years. At the time of the introduction of Capital Transfer Tax in 1975 the nil rate band was £15,000 and by the time Capital Transfer Tax had been renamed as Inheritance Tax in 1986 the figure stood at £71,000. Today the nil rate band is £325,000 which means that the first £325,000 of the value of an estate is taxed at zero per cent.
Conclusion: Whilst the Budget proposals are not yet law, it seems that we are likely to see an effective £1 million nil rate band by April 2020 – but remember that tax legislation is complex and it always pays to seek professional advice. I can be contacted at on 01842 755032 or c.chamberlain@lovewell-blake.co.uk Disclaimer: Please note that this article is provided for your information only. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure its accuracy, information contained herein may not be comprehensive and you should not act upon it without seeking professional advice.
Transferable Nil Rate Band - Up until 9 October 2007 it was not possible for married couples and civil partners to transfer unused amounts of the nil rate band from the first death to the survivor. Whilst there was a tax

August is often a very dry month but you can extend the flowering season in your garden if you can spend some time watering and dead-heading. Pots and tubs now need attention every day and hanging baskets can need watering twice a day. Even if it rains all day, the water does not get into containers and you will need to be out there with your hose or watering can to keep the display going (even if you feel a fool in your mac). The other thing that needs generous watering is any bush or tree you planted this year; it takes time for the roots to grow down enough to support the top growth and help at this time means years of pleasure – also you probably paid good money for a plant and it’s worth the time and effort of watering to keep it alive. As for flowers, by removing spent blooms you stop the plant diverting its energy to making seed and it will send up more buds which is what we want to see. Consider using a liquid tomato feed for your special flowering plants as this will help the size and brightness of the blooms – and it helps tomatoes colour up of course. In contrast to the way you manage flowers, you can encourage the development of the fruit trusses of tomatoes by nipping out the central growth and any flowering shoots. Similarly cutting off the tendrils shooting up from the top of your runner beans will make sure the plant develops its beans rather than just continues growing. This is when I wish I hadn’t used 8 foot bamboos as I try to reach the top growth which is heading for the sky!

07901105904 01842 766812 I have no skill with taking cuttings but will try a few pelargoniums this month as they must be the easiest to get rooted. Layering is an easier technique, requiring less follow-up attention and this is suitable for pinks and carnations and also for clematis. Lawns can look a bit miserable at this time of year but you can help them by raising the cutting bar higher when you are mowing so that you keep a neat look without letting the area get too dried out. If you want to help the grass on our thin soil, go for a high phosphate feed which will strengthen the roots for the winter rather than anything to promote lush top growth. Generally it is better to wait a month before working on grass as lawns need water after feeding and September is a cooler and wetter month. August has two club events with the BBQ on the 15th at the London Road Site (see your club handbook) and a talk by Rodney Tibbs on the 27th. As well as being a highly regarded artist and author our speaker has been gardening for 50 years so should have some good tips for us with his illustrated talk on “Vegetables for Value”. This will be as usual at URC on Thursday 27th at 7.30. Non-members are welcome. Sue Pilgrim

ALTERATIONS
Anyway, we felt this month was a good time to remind people, yet again, about the importance of neutering, as at the moment we are inundated with kittens and have taken in several pregnant females, who have subsequently given birth. It is so important for cats of both sexes to be neutered. A female cat can have 3 litters of kittens in a year and if they then all grow up to have kittens, the numbers can soon get out of hand! Females come into season at 6 months old, so when they have a litter of kittens 9 weeks later, the mother cat is not fully grown and sometimes is not interested in looking after her babies, as she is really still a kitten herself. We have had this situation a couple of times this year already; the kittens have been rejected by mum and so have been taken away from her and hand reared, which is a really time-consuming task! Unneutered cats also are more likely to fight and therefore are more at risk of being infected with feline leukaemia, which is a virus which invariably proves fatal and feline immunodeficiency which is similar to HIV in humans. Picture shows some of the kittens cared for.

Spotlight on.... ‘LINK-UP’ - the talking newspaper During July, the About Thetford met with Mike Wabe, Thetford's Town Crier, however it wasn't to talk about his announcement making skills, but rather another of his passions that he puts his voice to good use for - Link Up, Breckland's Talking Newspaper. Mike is one of over a dozen volunteers who gives a little bit of his time each month, taking local news and making it accessible to people for whom it is easier to listen to rather than read the news. In fact Mike joined Link Up after seeing an article in the About Thetford eighteen months ago and is now hoping that others will be likewise inspired.
If you would like more information on helping to produce Breckland's Talking Newspaper, know someone who would like to receive Link Up news recordings, or would like to support the charity- perhaps by donating memory sticks to the project please get in touch on 01842 755131. Website: www.linkupbreckland.org.uk E-mail: contact@linkupbreckland.org.uk
Link Up desperately needs a range of volunteers to help them continue the service and there are different ways in which you could help. The group is looking for a publicity officer, someone who can promote all the fantastic work the group does and help find more people that might wish to receive an audio version of local news each fortnight. Alternatively there is the opportunity to be a reader, helping to record selected new stories, or to join the team as a post production operator. These are just the sort of roles that would make good work experience & training can be provided. The talking newspaper is prepared every other Thursday evening at the Thetford Grammar School, who support the project, and there is a rota for volunteers, so even if you only have a couple of hours to spare each month there is the chance to give something back and be involved in a fantastic community project that has been running for over thirty years. Don't worry though Link Up has moved with the times and no longer sends out tapes, rather it produces digital recordings that are transferred to USB memory sticks. They even provide listeners with the equipment to listen to the recordings.

First Aid for Skin!
As gardeners are in full swing now a lot are suffering from dry, chapped hands. A good home made exfoliant will help to remove dry skin and also stains (for those who refuse to wear gloves!). Mix sugar together with lemon juice to form a paste, rub into hands and fingers concentrating on dry or stained areas then rinse with warm water. Next apply a good moisturiser as it will be easily absorbed now the dry skin has been removed. You could pop your hands in some rubber gloves or a plastic bag to create heat so the cream can penetrate into the skin better.
By Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days Our skin is so amazing how it heals itself from cuts, bruises and burns etc. We tend to take for granted how well it does these jobs until things go wrong. Often we can prevent damage to the skin by wearing sun screens and avoiding extreme changes in temperature but sometimes we need to give it a little help. Here is a short guide to looking after your skin:- If you have a minor burn, cool it immediately, if possible run under cool water or apply cool compress to the area first to get the temperature lowered. Then apply Aloe Vera. You can use it straight from the plant by tearing open a leaf and just applying the gel straight onto the skin, or it is available in a tube. Make sure it does not have lots of other added ingredients though as that may cause irritation. It really cools, calms and heals, hot, sore or swollen skin. Aloe Vera is also an excellent aftercare for over exposure to sun.

Insect bites can be treated with either. Apply either 1 drop of Lavender oil or a small amount of aloe Vera to the bite, to calm and soothe the skin. Lavender also has good healing properties and can be applied to the skin neat but must be used very sparingly. It is good also for bruises, insect bites and cuts, and it has antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties. I found it to be amazing when I suffered a bad case of chicken pox in my 20’s. I used it instead of calamine lotion - I had a cream form which I used on my face and also put a few drops (about 10) of the pure essential oil into a warm bath. It really helped with the itching and also the redness. My skin healed extremely well and I became a convert to the many therapeutic values of lavender.

Cosmetics Shelf Life
By Caroline King How many of us can honestly say we check all our dates on our cosmetics? Wash your make up brushes and hair brushes regularly? Hmm...I can guess the answers to most of those. We are all a little guilty, which is fine with busy lifestyles, family and social commitments. We shop for food and check the dates so why not the same for your cosmetics?
Fiona, Peter (Owner) and Ricky
The Hairstylists Looking forward to styling your hair
Storage of cosmetics: Most will remain safe and fit for purpose for long time provided they are stored in suitable conditions and not subjected to extreme conditions. Shelf Life: Products are generally made to last a long time, although it is not always clear how long “long” is? If a product has a limited shelf life (less than 30 month) it is required to be labelled with a “best before” date as food does. Best before dates are not common place on cosmetics as they are generally formulated to ensure they have a long shelf life. So how do we know how long to keep our cosmetics for? Symbols introduced by the industry in conjunction with the European Union recommend the length of a product remains usable after opening. This period is referred to as the “Period after Opening” or PAO. This period is given as number of months and an open jar. If a product has been stored correctly you should not experience any problems. Make sure lids are always kept on, you use clean hands prior to using the product and you follow the manufacturer’s instructions in regards to storage....and you should not experience any problems.

Cynthia Della Hoys’ Croxton Charity
Registered Charity Number 118374. The above charity was formed on the death of Cynthia Della Hoy who had many connections within the area and bequeathed properties and any subsequent surplus income for charitable purposes. The Trustees are able to apply any income of the charity to both the core village of Croxton and the local neighbourhood of the village, this being interpreted as the town of Thetford, the villages of Kilverstone and East Wretham all being within the Thetford Team Ministry. To this end the Trustees would like to highlight the availability of such funds to any other existing charities, community groups and organizations that may wish to to seek assistance from this charity, either for themselves or behalf of another. Any requests for funding should be made on a Grant Application Form available from the charity’s Secretary. Our Community Hero for August is someone that has dedicated the last decade to helping to save lives on an entirely voluntary basis. David Smith has been a volunteer community first responder with the East of England ambulance service for the last 10 years. Like other first responders he is trained to deliver medical assistance until the ambulance service arrives. He is dispatched by ambulance control and can attend life threatening emergencies and this scheme allows that little bit more time to get treatment started. Dave also volunteers for the St John Ambulance based in Brandon and previously worked on the night bus in Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds providing crucial support when needed. The About Thetford magazine has in the past supported this community group so much so that the vehicle that the Community First Responder has advertises the magazine on the side. Now it’s time that we recognise Dave for his personal commitment which is why, following an anonymous nomination, we’re making him the community hero for the month.
Congratulations to Dave, he receives a £50 voucher to spend with an advertiser of his choice from within the About Thetford magazine kindly sponsored by Thetford Garden Centre. If you know someone that you think should be nominated as a ‘community hero’ - please email: aboutthetfordmagazine@googlemail.com

THETFORD SINGS GOSPEL Have you ever been asked to start something from nothing? “What do you think about a choir event for the Thetford Great Festival they said”? It's February and to put everything together for a concert in August was a tall order but we advertised and people responded. Not a big group but all enthusiastic and 'up for a challenge'. The band are mostly local as are the crew and they are excellent. So what is Thetford Sings Gospel? The idea is to give local people a chance to come together and sing 'Gospel' music that carries rich harmonies, can be soulful and very funky and jazzy which is so different from the style of many other choirs. But it is also a chance for those that come along to have the opportunity to participate from their seats. Simon Barnett, Thetford Sings Gospel

HMRC has just contacted me to say that I owe them money as they have overpaid my Tax Credits. I didn’t realise that this could happen, and I don’t have enough money set aside to pay them back. What should I do? Tax Credits are designed to give working people a little bit of extra income to help guarantee a decent standard of living from work. Unfortunately, the system by which entitlement to Tax Credits is decided is complicated and can often lead to people falling into debt when they are asked to repay money they’ve wrongly been given. Tax Credits are gradually being phased into the Government’s new Universal Credit system, which is intended to reduce Credit miscalculations and overpayments. However, whilst we wait for the system to change, problems with the current process seem to be getting worse. Last year, Citizens Advice across England and Wales saw a 14% increase in problems relating to debt caused by Tax Credit overpayments. The combination of pressures on people’s living costs means that being asked to repay Tax Credits at the end of the year can be a real blow. Sky-high energy bills,
expensive childcare and wages which are still failing to keep up with costs mean that it can be a real struggle for households make ends meet. The last thing hard-pressed households need is for HMRC to put them in more debt. Often, HMRC will be willing to work with you to see what you can afford to pay back, but in many cases, poor communication and delays by the agency have led to our clients struggling to get a fair outcome. If you’re struggling with debt then it’s important to take steps to get on top of your bills. Debt can seem impossible but there’s always a way out of problems. Copyright Citizens Advice. For the most up-to-date a dvice, please visit www.citizensadvice.org.uk or telephone your local office on 01842 752777. Also, if you have a couple of hours to spare and would like to volunteer at your local CAB, we offer training and support in areas such as giving advice, administration work and/or reception. Please pop in or telephone 01842 754310 for an application form. LEAFLET DELIVERY SERVICE Don’t forget, the About Thetford magazine is pleased to deliver leaflets alongside the monthly magazine. NEWS FROM THETFORD DOLPHINS
Dolphin's swimmers were rewarded for their efforts throughout the season, with a break from training and a week of leisure activities for them and their families. Sessions included the ever popular water polo, rounders and aquaerobics and a new addition this year, Rollerskating at CurveMotion in Bury St. Edmunds. Barnham Village Hall was once again the venue for the highlight of the week, the annual Summer Barbecue on 3rd July. Presentations were made on the night by Head Coach Terry Clucas, to the winning team from the Club's series of mini- galas held in January, April and June. The Black Adders had held the position as team scoring most points for the first and second rounds, but were pipped to the post in the last round by the Red Arrows, who took the trophy for top scoring team overall. Final positions were Red Arrows, 1st place with 208 points, Black Adders 2nd, 186 points, Mean Green Beans 3rd, 176 points, Sunrays, 4th place, 170 points, Blue 5th, 164 points and White Wolves, 6th with 155 points. 14 swimmers tied for the title of Top Swimmer of the series this year. Swimmers scoring most points in the series were: James Foot, Oscar Harris, Toby Szczerbicki, Bethany Wilson, Charlie Trowell, Katie Bloomfield,
Lucy Whitehead, Grace McGill, Liam Cronin, Mia Moon, Toby Dickenson, Jack Pinkney, Amalee Neill-Gourlay and Oliver Niedziejko.

Thetford's nearest Roller Derby team are looking for new recruits! Roller Derby is a full-contact team sport, played on roller skates on an indoor track, in which a speed skater from each team scores points by overtaking members of the opposing team. Players try to hinder the other team's scorer using teamwork, agility and extreme force! The hard-hitting athleticism and alternative aesthetic make Roller Derby a popular and fast-growing spectator sport. Just 20 minutes drive from Thetford, Suffolk Roller Derby has grown from humble beginnings in 2012, taking beginners and forming them into fully fledged competitive teams. This year, for the first time, Suffolk’s women are entered into the national championships, beating Hertfordshire's Herts Breakers but losing to the Norfolk Brawds. The two remaining fixtures in the South East division are against Eastbourne's Bourne Bombshells and the Killa Hurtz Roller Girls from Essex, with a place in the play-offs still up for grabs! 2015 has also seen SRD's men's and co-ed teams playing their first matches.

Belly Dance, sometimes also known as Danse Orientale, is a beautiful form of low impact dance which actively tones deep muscles in the body. It makes us feel wonderful and it is fun. It is also deeply feminine and connects us with the goddess within! We do not need elaborate clothing – leggings and a tee-shirt are all that is required. We dance either with dance shoes or with bare feet. For all the classes, we warm up and cool down. Safety and well-being of each student is paramount. Lottie also teaches one:to:one sessions. Lottie is a qualified complimentary therapist and Touch for Health Practitioner and these skills give her an understanding of the healing effects of movements.
