It’s Panto Time With Thetford Players! Thetford Players are putting on a Panto with a difference in their next show – bringing the classic musical ‘The Wizard of Oz’ to the Carnegie Room stage this January. Based on the book by L. Frank Baum’s ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ written in 1900, and the first stage musical in 1902, this Spotlight Publications script brings Panto to Oz – with some really bad jokes for good measure. Taking the lead roles are Thetford Players regular Charlie Wilson as Dorothy and Michael Heslop as Harry her love interest. Michael is new to the Players, as is the Scarecrow, Amanda Kingsnorth who often performs with Barton Players. Regulars in Player’s shows and taking their first principal roles, George Cooke as the Tinman and Josh Plumley as the Cowardly Lion are really bringing their characters to life. The songs may be changed but the characters will take you ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’. Thetford Players are delighted to have Luke Jeffries return as the Dame, Auntie Em. Liz Staight is also welcomed back after a break for her first principal role, the Wicked Witch of the West! New adult and junior chorus members have joined the many regular Players members returning for another show.

Cast member Ben Matthews at rehearsals

First time Director, Barry Bailey, said “I am so proud of how hard the cast work during rehearsals. Under our Musical Director Jon Settle’s guidance, and the choreography skills from Sam Hoffman, the cast are working hard to polish their performance”. Caroline King is back doing the makeup for the show and will be working her magic to bring the characters to life with a mix of makeup and prosthetics. Techniques Hair Salon are also back behind the scenes working on cast hair and wigs.

Rotarians Celebrate Fundraising Success for Foodbank A charity Race Night organised to raise money for Thetford Foodbank has proved to be a big success. Organised by Rotary@CBC, a satellite group of Thetford Rotary Club, the event raised £1150.45. Eighty people attended the event held at the Charles Burrell Centre and was supported by a number of local businesses. “Each race was sponsored, and we also had the prizes donated, along with a donation from the caterers and the bar at the event. We’re absolutely delighted with the response from the local community and the support we’ve received”, explained Karen-Emma White, Chair of Rotary@CBC, “We had a speaker at a recent meeting who talked to us about the problems that Foodbanks were facing with the introduction of Universal Credit and decided that we should do something to help.”

Karen-Emma White from Rotary@CBC handing over the fundraising cheque to Andy Richardson, a volunteer at Thetford Foodbank

Ricky put his years of leading cruise entertainment to good practice and would have given John McCririck a run for his money! Each race was accompanied by raucous laughter as the race progressed. Gary Goodchild said, “It’s been a great night, we’ve had a lot of fun and everyone has joined in and made the evening one to remember.” Rotary@CBC would very much like to thank the following businesses for their support: East Anglia Swift Transport Ltd, The Mulberry, Party Poppers, Simon Long Removals, Mark Skinner Funeral Services, Thetford Business Forum, Lovewell Blake, Shadwell, Leaping Hare, About Thetford Magazine, Charles Burrell Centre, Tiger Fitness, Old Skool Bar and Aya Cuisine.

Garry Goodchild (Right) with a fellow jockey

Gary Goodchild and Brian Farrell from Thetford Rotary originally pitched the idea of a Race Night using the Thetford Rotary equipment, enabling the groups to work together for the first time. Using hobby horses, each jockey moved along the race track under the guidance of the race pundit, ‘Rotary Ricky’ – otherwise known as Ricky Jermy, Director of Old Skool Bar Ltd.

the

When Karen contacted Thetford Foodbank to inform them about the grand total for the evening, Ali James said, “Wow! This is the most fantastic news. Thank you to all involved so very much. This is such as boost. We are really grateful for your help.” In the last year Thetford Foodbank supplied 2011 3-day emergency food parcels to people in crisis. This month’s Thetford Face is Ted Zipfel. Ted is a lifelong football fan and has dedicated many years to Thetford Rovers Football Club. Ted celebrated his 90th birthday on November 21st, in honour of his milestone birthday the Ted Zipfel Foundation has been set up. Ted is the 5th longest serving Football Club Secretary in the UK. Have you lived in Thetford all your life? I was born in the row of thatched cottages in Weeting, but I’ve lived in Thetford the rest of my life and went to Norwich Road School. What did you do once you left Norwich Road School? I left school when I was 14 and went to work at the East Anglian Electric Light Company. Their showroom was where Lloyds Bank is now, next door to Normans Greengrocers. I stayed there until I went into the Army, I was drafted into the Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (REME) and spent time with the 14th 20th Hussars up at Catterick. When I came out of the army my firm had been nationalised and I was then working for the Eastern Electricity Board.

What was Thetford like during WW2? I was 18 in 1946 and called up in 1947 to do my National Service. During the war I started working at the East Anglian Electric Light Company. There were a lot of Americans stationed nearby and they had a lot of dances, but us blokes weren’t really welcome. The only bombing I experienced was near Croxton. I was part of the Army Cadet Force during the war and my father was in the Thetford Home Guard. You must have seen many changes in Thetford during your lifetime I can remember when you could drive up King Street. I watched them putting in the traffic lights at the corner of King Street and White Hart Street because I lived in St Nicholas Street at the time. I was known as one of the Back Street Boys. About 4,000 people lived in Thetford then. I used to go to the Palace Cinema three times a week, Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and sometimes on a Sunday as well. I also belonged to the YMCA, which was based where the Conservative Club is now. We used to play table tennis and snooker there.

Do you have a highlight during your time involved in Thetford Rovers? The 1987 Norfolk Senior Cup Final is a day that I’ll never forget. We also played Ipswich in the mid 1960s, Bill McGarry was the Ipswich Manager at the time. After the game we all went down to the Fish and Chip shop in Earl Street, opposite the Oddfellows Hall. I’ve worked with several boys who have turned professional along with Simon, Dean Greygoose went to Crewe Alexandra and Ian Henderson went to Norwich. Ted Zipfel, who celebrated his 90th birthday in November and has a Foundation named after him

Did you meet your wife in Thetford? No, I went to the cinema with a friend and my wife was sitting in the row in front, she was from Didcot. I brought her back to Thetford, she was a terrific woman. My wife wasn’t a football fan, she would come along and watch though. She used to say, “What football again!?” because she preferred Bingo. My family still live in Thetford, we had 7 children, lots of grandchildren and even a great, great granddaughter who is 3. What part has football played in your life? I’ve always loved football, when I left school Thetford Town was the only club in the town. I was captain of the Reserves until I was called up. When I came home I played for the 1st team for the first time. We used to play at Kent’s Field. As soon as Rovers was formed in 1950 I joined them. The Club Secretary was Curly Robinson. George Angus Senior played at Rovers and had a chance to join Tottenham Hotspurs. We only played friendlies until the club was registered in 1951. I was a player until I had a bad knee injury in my mid 30s. Then I took over as the Club Secretary and I’m still there! I love grassroots football, I’d sooner go to a grass roots game rather than a professional one. You’ve given many years to grassroots football, have you ever had any recognition for your work? I’ve had a few awards over the years, I was given a gold medal by Football Norfolk for 50 years of service, I’ve been Secretary Of The Year for the South Norfolk League, Sir Trevor Brooking presented me with an outstanding contribution to Community Football award which was signed by himself and Sir Geoff Hurst. That was a lovely award. Last year I was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the TARAs. It was presented by Simon Milton who used to play at Thetford Rovers before he played for Ipswich. I was very very pleased to receive my TARA, it was such an honour.

What’s your favourite thing about living in Thetford? I think it’s a nice little town to live in with nice people. I’m always glad to get back to Thetford, I’ve had a lot of good mates.

Ted with members of Thetford Rovers at the Ted Zipfel Foundation Football match at Euston Park.

The Ted Zipfel Foundation was launched this year by Ed Sheridan and Colin Woods with the aim to raise money for local good causes each November, the month of Ted’s birthday. This year a charity football match was held in Ted’s honour with over 100 spectators attending. A Just Giving Page has also been set up. £435 was raised recently enabling the Foundation to sponsor a new U15 kit for Thetford Bulldogs. Christmas Service Of Remembrance Christmas can be a most wonderful time of the year but also one of sadness if you have lost a loved one. The season of Christmas is a time of peace and hope and a time to be joyous with family and friends. However, for many who have love loved ones it will bring painful memories. With these thoughts in mind, Thetford Town Council are holding a Service of Remembrance at the Cemtery Chapel on London Road on Friday 7th December, commencing at 7pm. The Chapel will be open from 6.30pm. Robert Ogden will be leading the service. From Tuesday 4th December there will be a memorial Christmas tree in the Cemetery Chapel for you to come and place messages for your loved ones.

Youngest Speaker Wins Jamboree Support Plaudits were well deserved for Thetford teenager Elizabeth Wright, who was recently Thetford Probus Club’s youngest-ever speaker. Her talk at the club’s November meeting, revolved around her ambition to attend the 24th World Scouting Jamboree being held in in the United States next year. Elizabeth’s story made a big impression with members as she explained her involvement with the scouting movement which she joined in 2015. This had helped her develop a whole range of interests and skills. After giving a potted history of scouting and how it was formed by Baden Powell in 1912, Elizabeth told her audience how she had set her sights on going to the important event and how she was fortunate enough to be chosen to be one of 40 representing Norfolk and Suffolk at the Jamboree. While the selection process was a huge hurdle in itself because she needed to show the right abilities, especially inter-personal and teamwork skills, it was only the first step. With over £3,500 to cover all the Jamboree costs, it might well have put off many, but Elizabeth’s determination and efforts in raising the money have brought her close to reaching the target. She admitted that at the start it had seemed a daunting task, but as the fund-raising and experience in giving talks began to pay off, she said her confidence had grown. Members were full of admiration for Elizabeth and were in no doubt she will be doing Thetford and her county proud in West Virginia next year. Applause wasn’t the only way of showing appreciation for her talk and she was presented with a cheque by Chairman Nigel King and Treasurer Anthony Boutle on behalf of the club. Members also made individual donations.

New Members For Rotary A recent meeting of Thetford Rotary Club, saw members discussing club business with a number of members giving reports on the Club’s activities. During these reports, it was announced that the Club’s charity account had received a generous anonymous donation. Members agreed that this should be ‘topped up’ to £595, the cost of a Shelterbox which contains day-to-day necessities for families hit by natural disasters. Most recently large numbers of the boxes have been sent to Indonesia, following the tsunami which devastated many homes.

Spotlight On The Thetford Society As we hurtle towards the end of 2018 our tenth guest speaker this year was Fred Wickens. Not a local chap although he does now reside in Brandon. Fred was once a fireman with the London Fire Service and it was just a fluke that he fell into the ropes and trimming business. For him it began as a part time role 40 or 50 years ago (his words) which has led him to some fascinating places including India, providing him with so many incredible stories that would make him a desirable guest at any dinner party. What is special about ropes and trimmings you may ask? I think everyone in the audience was probably asking themselves the same thing. However once Fred began to reel off his long list of uses for these items especially tassels, we soon realised that they are actually everywhere, it is we just don’t necessarily notice them. From stately homes to film sets, aircraft to churches, the military and ceremonial to furniture and plenty in between, these beautiful, sometimes costly handmade items are there not just looking pretty but doing a job, tassels are very practical. The making of tassels and ropes was once a cottage industry until the introduction of the minimum wage which forced production to Asia, where most of today’s tassels are made. Fred’s talk included lots of photographs and samples of the finest ropes and tassels, we even saw one that was made for the Royal British Legion which was very topical given the 100th anniversary commemorations for WWI. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 4th December when Tony Dobbin will give a talk titled ‘It’s a Dog’s Life’. A warm welcome will be given to everyone, so please come along. Cost: £1 members, £2 non members. Mac McDonald

Community Project Steaming Ahead Full Steam Ahead, based at the Charles Burrell Centre, began at the end of April 2018. The project is now 7 months in and organisers are pleased to report that 14 participants are employed and a further 19 are currently enrolled on the project. The fourteen participants who have completed the project are now successfully employed as a direct result of the one to one support, CV and cover letter writing assistance and interview skills given by Lyn FSA Project Co-ordinator. Several participants have also received basic IT training with Project Administrator Julie. They are working in the following industries: Security, care homes, an opticians, a café, a school, manufacturing, a supermarket, a legal company and regulatory affairs. Five participants have completed an Emergency First Aid at Work course which was provided by West Suffolk College and three of these participants have also successfully entered employment, two in a care home and the other in a school canteen. One of the current participants is being provided with work experience at Shadwell and is thoroughly enjoying this opportunity as she is passionate about equine management. Another participant has attended and passed a CSCS course, another has attended an Excel course whilst a further four will be attending a business admin course. A Fire Marshal training course took place in November with a further one planned in December. Five participants will also be attending an Emergency First Aid at Work course in December.

Coats for Kids @CBC The Charles Burrell Centre have launched a new community initiative, ‘Coats for Kids’ after they became aware that many children in Thetford did not have a warm winter coat this year and the journey to school or nursery was often a very a cold one. FSA participants and CBC staff collected good quality second hand winter coats for children aged from 1 to 11 years. They were so inundated with support that they are not currently collecting but if you, or someone you know would benefit from a coat, please visit the Centre reception or telephone 01842 779867.

The largest referrer to the project has been Thetford Job Centre, but there’s also been self-referrals from the Full Steam Ahead Facebook page and the local Citizens Advice Bureau. To find out more, please visit the Centre.

Dan’s Latest Creation Delivers Christmas Cheer At Your Local Museum Look out for a figure of a Victorian Father Christmas in the Ancient House Museum front window over the Festive Season. Made by artist and museum volunteer Dan Morgan pictured here at work on his creation, the figure will greet passers-by throughout the month of December. Dan said, “I really enjoy working with cardboard and wanted people to see the sculpture was made from this material. I have been inspired by the pictures in Charles Dickens of A Ghost of Christmas Past. This is a green figure and a much earlier Father Christmas image than the more familiar ‘Coca-Cola’ red version”. We hope you enjoy something a little different.

The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday all year and is closed on 25 th, 26th December and 1st January. Curator Oliver Bone said, “We would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy Christmas and our very Best Wishes for the New Year.” If you would like more information on the Ancient House groups or activities visit the museum’s social media pages on Facebook and Twitter, call by or telephone the museum on 01842 752599 during opening hours.

A funny, warm-hearted and interactive rustic tale to make you squeal with laughter, bristling with puppets, live music and lots of joining in. Garlic Theatre entertain the whole family with beautifully crafted puppets, music and a garlicky French twist to the tale. This performance will be on Thursday 20th December, at 2pm. Tickets are £3 and available from Thetford Library. To book call 01842 752048, or pop into the library.

Out and About Thetford

Pink Floyd Tribute Success There was an air of

excitement as the audience arrived for the second of the sell-out shows performed by What The Floyd Band. Over 500 people enjoyed a fantastic live performance of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon at the Carnegie Rooms over two evenings. Some of the audience had travelled from as far as Southend and Brighton to enjoy the show. What The Floyd Band started 2 ½ years ago in Woking and have been touring around the UK over the past year, “Thetford is one of the smaller venues we’ve played, there are a few Floyd bands around, but none are playing in this area, so we wanted to bring our show to Thetford. We’ve become bigger quite quickly and have to find somewhere that can accommodate all our tech, the light show is terribly What The Floyd Band who performed at the important” explained keyboard player Richard Smith, “The town’s Carnegie rooms recently Carnegie has been a great venue, the team here have been really helpful, Paul is brilliant.” The light show and audio visuals played a big part in the show, but the real stars of the evening were the group themselves, especially vocalist Adele Harley. The show featured a mix of well-known tracks in the first half and the entire Dark Side of The Moon album during the second half. The performance was exceptional, finishing with a standing ovation from the audience. “We’re all huge fans and playing stuff we grew up with, it’s great fun. We’ve spent a long time really finding out how it all fits together to create our show.” What The Floyd Band are hoping to return to Thetford with their next tour. Home Show Triumph Thetford Town Boxing Club are celebrating following the success of their second Black Tie Home Show event at the CBC. The event was supported by a number of local businesses, either as sponsors or by booking a table. The club is going from strength to strength with 7 qualified coaches and team of dedicated volunteers. Diners were served a delicious 3 course meal and enjoyed 12 different fights featuring Thetford boxers against clubs from across East Anglia and the South East. Younger boxers kicked off the show with their skills bouts. Cheered on by both opposing sides, the young boxers received a huge round of applause at the end of each bout. For many this was the first time they had performed in front of a crowd. Joe Kerry admitted that he had felt a bit nervous before his bout but was really pleased with the support he’d received from the audience. The final six bouts were contested fights. Fighting for the second year running Archy Stannard said; “I’m looking forward to my fight, I’m really excited to be here tonight.” Kyle Mckechnie and Archy were also congratulated for completing their boxing leader course with the Police Community Clubs of GB, the first step on the England Coaching pathway developing younger fighters as coaches. Club Chairman Pat Pearson said, “I’m really pleased to see how well the Thetford boxers have done this year and yet again Charlie and her team have done an excellent job organising the evening. Bubbles And Baubles Product Launch Evening

Excited fans of Stepping Stones Emporium flocked to the Leaping Hare shop on King Street to enjoy the Christmas product launch. Caroline King started creating her products over two years ago, and after spending a year developing products and going through rigorous testing, has created a fabulous range of pamper products. New for this Christmas are her soy candles, Christmas bauble bath bombs and salt bath potions in festive fragrances. “It’s a dream come true, I’ve always wanted to do candles and home fragrance. It had to be soy to fit in with the ethos of Stepping Stones, but I always get nervous launching new products” explained Caroline. “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Corinne and Simon for believing in my brand and supporting me from day one. I had a vision and they trusted in it. Their continued support is always appreciated.” Guests enjoyed a glass of bubbles and festive music whilst Caroline was on hand to talk about her products. The new products proved very popular with the gingerbread candles, Frosty Snowmen bath bombs, cold pressed soap and soap flower Caroline King with some of her products bouquets eagerly snapped up by happy shoppers. Regular customer Hazel said; “They’re lovely, very girly and all locally made. I think Caroline is amazing and these make the perfect gifts.” Her daughter Adrianna continued; “There’s no one else in Thetford who is doing this kind of stuff, it’s just like Lush but nicer.” Another customer told Karen that she couldn’t believe that the flower bouquets were made of soap; “They’re so beautiful and I have just the person in mind for one.” Speaking about the event Corinne Fulford from Leaping Hare said; “It’s been a real pleasure to host Caroline for this evening’s launch and for people to see the incredible range that she has managed to build in such a short time.” Leaping Hare are Thetford stockists for Stepping Stones Emporium, to shop on line visit www.ssemporium.co.uk

Christmas Shopping For All

There was a festive cheer in the air as TADDS held their first ever Christmas Market during one of their regular Friday morning sessions. TADDS Trustee Jo Cooper explained, “If you have dementia or are caring for someone with dementia it can be really hard to get out and do Christmas shopping, so we thought we’d bring it to the group.” TADDS opened the event to the wider community and were delighted with the response from the local community who joined in the fun. Jo Mountjoy-Dixon continued, “People feel Trustees and service users enjoying their Christmas Market included and can access gifts for loved ones and enjoy a shopping occasion without being taken around busy department stores, because the event is open to family and friends everyone can enjoy the experience together.” TADDS are always looking for new volunteers to help at the Thursday or Friday morning sessions. Recently TADDS took over the Thursday morning group previously run by the Alzheimer Society at the Methodist Church Hall. This group meets from 10:30am until 12:30pm for tea, coffee chats and group activities and is free to access. The Friday session is held at Cloverfield Church from 10am. Thirty people regularly stay for lunch which has a small additional charge. The final Friday session of this year will be the Christmas Party on Friday 14th December. For more information about TADDS please call Jo on 07542866519 (answerphone after hours) or visit the website; www.thetford-dementia-support-group.org Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 27

Mayoral Visit For Link-Up Link-Up had a visit from Councillor Roy Brame, Thetford’s Mayor, and his wife, Karen, to one of our talking newspaper production evenings at Thetford Grammar School. The Mayor is one of Link-Up's patrons and, as Thetford has a different Mayor each year, this gives us the opportunity to show off what we do annually to a different person. John Morgan, one of our producers, took them through what happens on a production night, while Sue Colledge and I explained the scripting and mailing side of the process. Link-Up was set up in 1984 to provide a free fortnightly talking newspaper for blind and partially sighted people in Breckland.

Are You A Fan Of Brussel Sprouts? For a vegetable so much disliked it is amazing how many tons of Brussels Sprouts are consumed in this country. In fact, along with the Netherlands, the UK produces over 80,000 metric tons a year. It must be admitted that, if they are boiled too long, they are awful – so try sautéing them with bacon and some chestnuts. I have read that they can be roasted too! It seems that we can thank the Romans for Brussels Sprouts as they come from the Mediterranean and had spread to Northern Europe by the 5th century, though the name comes from their extensive cultivation in Brussels in the 13th Century. They stand the cold well, so are a good crop for picking during the winter and in fact are sweeter after being touched by frost. If you plan to grow some, look at the descriptions in seed catalogues where you can select the type you want for size and flavour – some are quite mild in taste. December is a good month to prune hedges back drastically as it is best done while the bushes are dormant but before the severe frosts. Allow for plenty of new growth in the Spring as you decide where to cut. If you are buying a Christmas tree, the Nordman Fir is the type which holds its needles well and saves a lot of clearing up though they are quite expensive. You can get rooted trees but do not feel bad about buying one that is without roots – the saplings are planted close together initially and then some are cut down to allow other trees to grow to a commercial size. So some smaller trees are a biproduct of that. Remember also that all green waste is free at the Amenity Site on Mundford Road. This means that after Christmas, the tree can be stripped of its decorations and go for recycling. To make your house look welcoming to visitors in the next few weeks you could buy some plants and fill a container to stand by the front door – these

Great White Seen In Thetford You might think you would never see these words written in relation to a wild animal seen in Thetford but you would be wrong. The words ‘Great White’ conjure up a Jaws-esque scene, where an oversized predator strikes terror into the heart of the community. In this instance we can all rest easy, the Great White in question is a Great White Egret, found by Thetford resident Nick Moran on the BTO’s Nunnery Lakes Reserve on Friday 9 November, and still present at the time of writing. Great White Egret is set to become the next new colonist in the UK, following in the footsteps of its smaller cousin the Little Egret, which is about half the size of the Great White. This is not the only difference. For most of the year the bill of the Great White is yellow, in Little Egret it is black. Little Egret also has dark legs with contrasting yellow feet, in the larger bird the legs are entirely dark, including the feet; the legs and neck are also very long compared to Little. Great White Egret has a global distribution, only really being totally absent from the Arctic and Antarctic regions, but it is thought that the birds currently beginning to colonise here are from the near continent. East Anglia is ripe for colonisation; Great White Egrets nest in reedbeds and trees over water, a lot of which can be found in the Fens and Broads but they will also join other heron species colonies. The nearest Grey Heron colony to Thetford can be found at Euston and maybe in the future we will see Great Whites in amongst the more familiar Greys. Three species of white heron now breed in Britain, Great White, Little and Cattle Egret, and with the two former species currently being seen on the Nunnery Lakes Reserve, it is surely only a matter of time before Cattle Egret turns up too, as this species has also begun to colonise the UK.

Great White Egret - photographed by Andy Mason

Anyone wanting to see the Great White Egret on Nunnery Lakes stands the best chance by looking at the flood from the Barnham Cross Common viewing areas. Even though the bird stands at around a metre tall and is white, it can prove difficult to see so a bit of patience might be needed.

The Nunnery Lakes Reserve is open to visit 365 days a year. Information leaflets on the reserve can be picked up in the reception of the BTO headquarters during office hours. Stancliffe,13:33 Pa Home Flame QP Ad.qxp_Layout 1 Paul 10/10/2018 British Trust for Ornithology

Counting The Cost Of Cats Pets can be an expensive commodity and owning one should not be taken on lightly. Our adoption fee for a cat or kitten is £60 which helps towards our very large vet fees. All our cats are checked by a vet before they are rehomed which might include blood tests for feline leukaemia and feline immunodeficiency virus, as well as vaccinations, flea and worm treatment and neutering if the cat is old enough. We spend about £120 on each cat and kitten in our care.If potential adoptive families can’t afford to pay the £60 adoption fee, they should consider whether they want to take on a cat at all. Because owning a cat doesn't stop there. For kittens we pay for the first vaccine, but they need a booster 3-4 weeks later to cover them for a year, which the new owner will pay for. This could cost £30 depending on the vet that is used. Although we pay for the neutering when the kitten is 4-5 months old, there is still the cost of flea and worm treatment, not to mention food and litter. Although you can buy cheaper versions of flea and worm treatment from the supermarket, they are not as effective as buying it from the vet. Fleas become resistant to all flea treatments eventually, and therefore new treatments are coming on to the market all the time. Your vet will make sure you have the most up to date and effective treatment for your cat. Most vets suggest you join their 'healthy pet club' and this certainly helps with the cost of keeping your cat healthy. You pay the vet a set amount each month, and for that your cat will receive check-ups, flea and worm treatment, annual boosters for vaccines and a discount for any other health problems that the cat may have. With Christmas approaching, we do not recommend that cats and kittens are given as presents. The recipient of the cat or kitten should be able to choose their own cat, and where children are involved the

Would you like a Maid to Clean your home?

parents should have a say in which cat or kitten is chosen. For that reason, we do not home cats or kittens in the lead up to Christmas and New Year. A cat or kitten can be reserved, but sending him to his new home in the festive season is not fair to the cat. With boisterous households and guests arriving and leaving, the cat would feel very unsettled and frightened. Cats that have been reserved can go to their new homes after 2nd January, when things have calmed down. At this time of year be aware of the dangers of your Christmas tree. Kittens are likely to climb them and become entangled with potentially fatal consequences. Make sure your tree is in a room that the kitten can be shut out of when you are not around. For help or advice or if you need assistance with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. Could You Bring The Magic Of Reading To A Child In Your Community? Life is better when everyone can read well and express themselves confidently. However, low levels of literacy continue to be a persistent problem both nationally and locally. Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that transforms children’s life chances by recruiting and supporting volunteers and placing them in local primary schools. These volunteers work with children who have either fallen behind with their reading, lack confidence, or struggle with their comprehension, fluency or vocabulary.

Support For Annual Gala On the 10th November at Breckland Waterworld, Thetford Lions Club organised their twenty-first annual Swimming Gala for those with disabilities. This year more than eighty swimmers attended which is the highest number in the history of the event. Competitors enjoyed a race programme of fifty one races. Teams entered from Colchester Phoenix Swimming Club, Great Yarmouth and Waveney Special Olympics, Peterborough Special Olympic Swimming Group, Special Olympics Norfolk, Runnymead Swimming Club and Stowmarket Swimming Club. The enthusiasm and volume of sound reverberating around Waterworld was tremendous. Competitiveness and endeavour was much in evidence. The Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Roy Brame and Mayoress Karen Brame attended and not only assisted with the event but featured in the closing medal ceremony.

The charity is searching for members of the community in Thetford who can spare a few hours a week helping children to become more confident readers. As a Beanstalk reading helper you will work with children at a local primary school and spend 30 minutes with each child twice a week, during term-time, for at least one academic year. Very importantly, Beanstalk sessions are meant to be relaxed, informal and fun. By having this one-to-one time with each child the reading helper can help to develop the child’s reading skills and wider language acquisition in a fun and engaging way. Reading helpers are able to tailor resources to the individual interests to ensure it’s relevant to the child. No experience or qualifications connected to working with children are required to become a reading helper. Beanstalk provides training and ongoing support. Beanstalk just needs volunteers to have a passion for working with children to give them the best possible chance of improving their confidence and literacy. If you would like to become a Beanstalk reading helper in Thetford, please call Beanstalk on 0845 450 0301 or visit www.beanstalkcharity.org.uk

Renew And Regenerate This Winter It is at this time of year we begin to experience changes to our skin. It may appear much drier, become chapped and much more hyper sensitive to things, especially the lips and hands. Products and creams that we have used in the past and been perfectly fine with may now irritate the skin causing inflammation, redness and even itching. Other factors which cause changes may be triggered by a change in the environment, cold weather and central heating which can cause dryness. We try to overcome these effects by applying more moisturiser but this in turn may not be the best solution. The moisturiser may be too rich, which can make the skin feel congested instead of what we really wanted which was hydration! Also, some moisturisers can contain perfumes and or colours which then makes the skin become itchy and or red and easily irritated. For maximum results keep it simple, try hydrating, soothing spritzers which contain humectants to bind and attract moisture to the skin, and calming extracts of liquorice, cucumber and raspberry extract. They are really easy to use and can be applied several times during the day, even through make up and they will help create a protective shield against assault from the environment. We are all wanting to look our best over the holiday season, some of our most popular treatments leading up to Christmas are the ones which tighten and firm the skin. Using radio frequency, magnetic pulse, and intense pulse light will get the skin boosting production of its own natural collagen giving our clients a younger looking complexion in time for the upcoming festivities. Wishing you a Happy Christmas! Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days

Thetford Inner Wheel News The club met for dinner in November and were pleased to welcome the District 8 Chairman Linda Fellas who belongs to the Great Yarmouth Club. She told us about her interesting life and how, when widowed, decided to go to University to do a degree and a Masters at the UEA. She then became a social worker. It was during this time she learnt about her chosen charity, Asperger East Anglia. This is a small charity locally which offers help to those with the syndrome and their carers. Before taking up her role in Inner Wheel she had been Chairman of the local U3A. She is not a lady to put her feet up, even now in retirement! Linda told us about the Association President’s charity which is Jessie’s Fund. This is a charity which helps children through music. She was thanked by Cathy Witton and presented with a selection of items to remind her of her visit to Thetford.

Local Estate Agents Scoop Major Prize Thetford business Chilterns has been independently identified as one of the top estate agents in the country and now features in the Best Estate Agent Guide. The guide is a website that lists the top estate agency branches in the UK. It was compiled by the Property Academy, an organisation set up to improve business performance and service standards in the property industry – with the support of Rightmove, the UK’s leading property portal. There are c.15,000 estate agents in the country and Chilterns was awarded a ‘Shortlisted’ status in its size-band and region, putting it in the top 5% of sales and letting agents in the country. In addition to this, Chilterns’ Thetford branch was announced as the fifth best sales and lettings agent in the country and awarded ‘Double Exceptional’ standard for sales and lettings agents nationally. Senior Manager of the Thetford branch, Andrew Overman, said; “To make the ‘Top 100’ last year was an achievement and we were delighted to have made 35th place, to better that this year and finish 5th out of 26,000 estate agents in the country is exceptional and shows consistency, I’m extremely proud of my team”. The Property Academy carries out one of the largest surveys of home movers and each year has responses from over 15,000 home sellers, buyers, landlords and tenants. The survey identifies what home movers feel are the most important aspects of an estate agent’s service. This insight is used to establish the criteria for the Best Estate Agent Guide - in other words, agents that are listed in the Best Estate Agent Guide have demonstrated that they deliver a performance and service that home movers truly value. Explore 4x4 Crowned Best Outdoor Pursuits Company In The East Outdoor activity, adventure and survival specialists, Explore 4x4 were crowned the winners of Best Rural Recreation or Outdoor Pursuits Business in the Rural Business Awards recently. The award created to recognize a business that not only successfully contributes to the rural economy and people, but one that is also entrenched in the rural way of life. Originally established to provide top quality 4x4 off-road driving experiences and training in 2010, Explore 4x4 is now a dual sided company, one complimenting the other. They have evolved to become purveyors of the finest country activities, adventures and experiences. Now offering a whole host of shooting, driving and rural sports both as experiences and professional training. Not only do they bring these outstanding experiences to the public, they are also provide important training to some of the country’s most important institutes including; wildlife trusts, construction companies, archaeologists, water supply companies and the agricultural industry. They are constantly involved in training the securities agencies including the Police, MoD and Fire and Rescue Services. On top of all this, they believe they are one of the only companies in the UK to provide the blind and visually impaired with the opportunity to drive themselves, not just be driven. For those who have driven before losing their sight, and those who have never driven, having been blind from birth and occasionally, for those with other problems preventing them driving. It is a very special experience for drivers and their families alike and people come from across Britain to participate. With activities to suit all ages, numbers, abilities and pockets, their base on the Elveden Estate, with its farmland, forestry and abundance of wildlife, is a wonderful place to introduce and develop a respect for the rural way of life to many; some for the first time. Whether training or leisure clients, all are taught to preserve and respect the countryside and wildlife. Having entered this award and the Outstanding Rural Diversification Project, the country pursuit experts made it down to the finals in both awards, but it was the Best Rural Recreation or Outdoor Pursuits Business that they bring home the trophy for. Explore 4x4 are delighted to have been recognized for their contribution to the rural sector and have clearly proven they are a business that

Christmas Festivities Wow, what a year! Surely, I’m not the only one that is wondering where the time has gone! The festive season is a great time for all those that celebrate it. It is a time to see all of the family you haven’t seen all year, feasting on delicious food and of course the presents! We all tend to let our diets take a back seat in December; whether you’re out with your work colleagues at the Christmas Party, braving the shops or being held hostage by the sofa, there is usually a convenient/unhealthy ‘cheat’ meal on the menu (I am definitely guilty of this when the cold weather hits!) If you’re one of those people that enjoys a good feast but regrets it after, here’s a few pointers in keeping those pesky thoughts at bay: Drink a pint… of water every morning. This helps kick start your metabolism and keeps your chance of dehydration to a minimum. Keep all of your sweet treats and unhealthy snacks in one room and preferably different to the one you’ll be sitting in most! When the sweet treats are readily available and at arms length we tend to eat a lot more than what our brain registers, especially when watching those Christmas films whilst snuggled up under our blankets!

Merry Christmas from Tiger Fitness! For more information about health and fitness services available for you, visit the website: www.tigerfitnessclub.co.uk

Try and be active for 15-30 mins each day. Even if it’s playing with the kids at the park, getting a quick HIIT session in or, where possible, swap your car for a bicycle for your commute to work in the mornings. It’ll all help and keep your ticker working to shift those unnecessary calories! Be good, stay safe and I hope you get spoiled! See you inMCP the New Year – Rich (Tiger Fitness). Thetford Dolphins Thetford Dolphins Juniors were agonisingly close to winning the Fenland Junior League final at Whittlesey, falling short by 2 points, but some consolation, they finished an excellent 7th place overall from 15 teams throughout the season.

Thetford Dolphins at the recent Whittlesey final

More than just golf available at Feltwell

Our Juniors have started their next session of coaching which will go on until just before Christmas and Jo is planning an exciting range of activities, enabling the children to not only learn how to play the game of golf but also learn the rules and the generally accepted etiquette of the game, which will stand them in good stead when they start playing with other members.

Victorious Dolphins were Charis Neill-Gourlay 100m IM (Pb); Toby Flood 50m free (Pb); Tiffany Pestell 50m free (Pb); Hannah Twells 50m breast; Tabitha Payne 50m fly (Pb); Charlisse Harding 50m back; Harry Fasey 50m fly & 50m free (Pbs); Ciara Lewis 50m fly (Pb); Samuel Wilkinson 50m back (Pb); Ella Darton 50m breast; Harvey Durham 50m breast; Toby Dickenson 100m IM (Pb) and Nathan Ruggles. Personal best for James Foot while Dominic Trowell, Starr Hutchinson, Joshua Barrett, Miah Bull, Oran Campbell, Thomas Ridding and Ella Aylott were all part of the team. Well done.

Boxing Club Thanks The Town For Its Amazing Support The second annual boxing event held by Thetford Town Boxing Club was again a massive success. And the club would like to thank the town for its amazing support. The evening was made a success by an army of volunteers who all gave up their free time to help put on another great event, without these volunteers the show would not be the success it was. The club, coaches, boxers and team would like to convey a big thank you to all that helped. They would also like to thank the Charles Burrell Centre for use of the venue and ‘Say It In Lights’ for providing the amazing backdrop and for the talents of DJ VNDS with Boothy Lights. The evening started off with guests enjoying a three course meal provided by Whelan Bespoke Catering with drinks served by Old Skool Bar. Once completed the town’s newest boxing stars made themselves ready to enter the ring. The first six bouts were skills bouts.

John Tom Kerry (C) from Thetford Town Boxing Club with Stanley Nunes (R) from Watford ABC with their trophies after their bout

These are bouts where no winner is declared but to introduce new and upcoming boxers to performing in front of a crowd. First up was Jay Russell who was up against Roman Street of Sudbury. Rory May entered the ring next to go up against Harvey Garnhem from Progress Boxing. Joe Kerry entertained the venue with his talent against Max Shaw from Canvey Boxing Club whilst Vinney Russell was fourth into the ring for his bout with Tommy Hopkins also from Canvey Boxing Club. John Tom Kerry was up against a much taller opponent from Watford ABC, Stanley Nunes. After, an impressive display followed as John Tom ducked and dived to gain every the advantage with both boxers looking proud of their achievements as both hands

Guests in the main Hall at Charles Burrell Centre ready for the Home Show bouts to start

were raised. The last skills bout saw Ellen Senior go up against Channel Garnham, from Ipswich ABC. With the Skills Bouts now over Tommy Iwanicki was against Raven Dodsworth from New Astley BC and after a tough few rounds lost on points. Kyle Fearless McKeckney was up next, determined to overcome his last loss with a win in front of his home crowd. He was up against Harry Betteridge from Islington Boxing Club. Kyle won unanimously on points. Archy Stannard fought a tough bout against Archie Bennett from Sudbury, despite Stannard giving his opponent a standing count in the second, he lost on a points split decision. Kieran Golden Boy Keen fought a fast handed opponent from Top Yard Boxing, Junayd Ali.The bout ended with Keens hand being raised on a split decision. Erikas Archramouicius fought three tough rounds against Jamieson Chambers from Progress Boxing, the bout ended in a spilt decision and a loss for the Thetford boxer. The last bout was Roman Novickis against Gary Williams from Ipswich ABC. Roman thrilled the venue on the last bout of the night taking a split decision win against his opponent. The club has yet again smashed expectations and wowed fans and residents of Thetford. The club runs as a non-profit organisation and all funds raised will go directly back to the club, and help fund travel to return bouts and events nationwide. The club has posted photos of the event on the Facebook page and is open on Monday nights for juniors 6pm until 7pm and seniors from 7pm until 8.45pm and again on Thursdays for juniors 6pm until 7pm and seniors from 7pm until 8.45pm. with running sessions on Fridays and Sundays.
