This month’s Thetford Face is Rachel Woods. Rachel is very active within our community, welcoming visitors to the town, daily litter picking and advocating Thetford. Rachel has been part of the Thetford Open Gardens organising team for the past 12 years. How long have you lived in Thetford? We’ve lived here since 2006, although we bought our house in 2001, but were posted to Berlin with the Foreign Office. What made you choose Thetford? I discovered Thetford whilst on a computer in South Africa when David gave me 3 weeks notice to find somewhere to live in England. We looked at Downham Market, Needham Market and Woodbridge but fell in love with Thetford. We had been coming to Norfolk since we were 18. Once we moved here we discovered the communication links were excellent and the community was great. You are well known for your love of gardening, did this help you settle into our community? I joined Thetford Garden & Allotment Club when we first moved here which helped with getting to know people, then I became the Chair for 5 years. I’m still a member and enjoy getting involved. I also helped Ancient House Museum by tidying up their Tudor inspired garden every now and again. My father was a good gardener and I’ve always loved gardening. My current garden is the biggest I’ve ever owned, it’s been a major project.

Rachel working on her garden at The Paddocks
How did you become involved with Thetford Open Gardens? Barbara Neal who founded the event, knocked on my door and asked if I would open on the first year. I didn’t think the garden was up to much but Barbara assured me that people would be interested in seeing it. The following year I helped to organise the event with Liz Hodgson and it’s grown from there. It’s a great community day which with the help of multiple people has gone from strength. Over £60,000 has been raised to date. I couldn’t do it without the help from my ace cake maker Sue Norman and Susie Dowling. We’re all working together to support St Nicholas Hospice. Do you volunteer anywhere else in the town? I’ve been volunteering at Leaping Hare for several years I find it sad that tourist information isn’t supported by local government on the whole. As a traveller I’ve used a lot of such Centres all around the world. It’s really nice to greet visitors to Thetford and watch their jaws drop when they hear what we have on our doorstep, the rich heritage and amazing things we have to do now; from ghost walks to local musicians performing outdoors. Are you involved in anything else in Thetford? I’m on the Parochial Church Council at St Cuthbert’s which I never intended to be, but the PCC has done some amazing work and we are now able to undertake our redevelopment. We will be opening a café and plan to work with ex-offenders to teach them skills ready for when they can go back into the workplace. We’re also

opening the church up so the community can fully use it. I do feel strongly that the church in the centre of town should be part of the community. Another way of having fun in Thetford is to join the U3A. I used to lead the wine tasting group and now belong to the cinema and theatre group. There is so much good stuff going on in the U3A it’s great! What inspired you to fundraise for Parkinson’s UK? David and I are learning to live with Parkinson’s as are many. It does affect your lives but in different ways. We’re lucky that David is able to do what he wants, maybe more slowly than before, but he’s still doing things that he loves. I decided that as well as living with Parkinson’s, you should also have fun so we are hosting a Charity Ball. We’re working with Old Skool Bar and the team at Leaping Hare to create an unforgettable evening. Gary Winter is providing the entertainment and there will be a 3-course dinner by Shefs. Both David and a good friend who also has Parkinson’s loved the ‘Shaken not Stirred’ title for the Ball. Parkinson’s UK are an amazing charity and are incredibly helpful to individuals and their carers living with Parkinson’s. They are very well organised and helpful, they share all the latest scientific news that’s out there. It’s just staggering what the research is

What is your favourite thing about Thetford? That’s an impossible question – there are so many things! If I had a magic wand and could do anything I would make sure no one threw litter ever again, it would save me having to pick it up! I take my litter-picker out with me daily as Thetford is so lovely to walk around. I’m a bit of a water baby, so really my favourite thing is the river system, the two rivers and the lakes to walk around is amazing and right on our door step. I love to spot the abundance of wildlife linked with the river whilst on my walks aroud Thetford.

Prize Draw Raises £2,000 For Charity One local hearing company recently held a charity Prize Draw in an attempt to mark its 20th anniversary by raising £20,000 for a hearing dogs charity. The Hearing Care Centre, which has a centre locally at Thetford Healthy Living Centre, organised the draw in support of deafness charity, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, giving entrants the chance to win a prize bundle of over £1,000 – the top prizes being a luxury stay at The Swan in Southwold and a meal for two at Gordon Ramsay’s Maze restaurant in Mayfair. Through faceto-face ticket sales and donations on the company’s JustGiving page, The Hearing Care Centre managed to raise £2,083! This year to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary, The Hearing Care Centre pledged to raise £20,000 for the charity and this was one of the last of many events held this year to meet this ambitious target. Final totals are currently being calculated but such wonderful support from the local community means this target is definitely within sight. Hearing Dogs for Deaf People delivers expert training for Hearing Dogs which provides invaluable emotional support to their deaf recipient. New found owners gain confidence, independence and companionship. The Prize Draw received generous support from local businesses – Coes, Fred Olsen, Dulux, Salthouse Harbour Hotel, Theatre Royal Norwich and Archant, as well as from hearing solution providers Phonak, Sivantos, Oticon and GN Hearing. To find out details of winning tickets, visit: www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/ prizedrawwinners Karen Finch, Managing Director and founder of The Hearing Care Centre, said: “This prize draw just goes to show the power of our community, with support not only from the general public but also from local businesses, we can all be proud of this fantastic total”.

Player’s Panto Triumph Thetford Players have done it again! Audiences have laughed, cried and most of all left saying, ‘I can’t wait until next year!’. The Wizard of Oz was the 8th Panto for the Players and saw the directorial debut for Barry Bailey. With some additional support from Katie Wright from Barton Players and experienced producers Jo Cooper and Sue Balaam alongside a strong backstage team, Barry brought this much loved story alive and with a fresh look. The Cowardly Lion played beautifully by Josh Plumley gave a nod to the big screen musical and evoked happy memories for those of us who crowded round a TV on high days and holidays. Star of the stage this year had to be George Cooke, playing the Tinman in a style all of his own. George had the audience roaring with laughter and lived up to his promise in the programme, he was FAB-U-LOUS! Strong performances from fellow principals made this show one to remember. Luke Jeffries made a triumphant return as the Dame from the moment he appeared on the stage, Amanda Kingsnorth had great stage presence and was perfectly cast as the Scarecrow in her first Panto. On opening night director Barry Bailey admitted he was feeling a mixture of nerves and excitement, “You don’t realise the work involved until you take something like this on, it’s been brilliant, there’s been ups and downs
obviously, it’s an emotional roller-coaster at times. They’ve been a good bunch of people to work with.” Barry also added that he was missing being on stage massively this year, “It’s really hard now standing here watching them, I really want to be on the stage! I think I’ll be back on the stage next time, that’s where I really enjoy being.” Panto wouldn’t be Panto without fantastic costumes, make-up and hair and this year was no exception. Long standing Wardrobe Mistress, June Lewis did a brilliant job again with the costumes, and if you were able to get close up to any of the cast you would have appreciated the fantastic make-up created by Caroline King and hair by Sharon Street. Year on year, Thetford Players a group of dedicated and keen volunteers continue to delight audiences with a Panto that a professional company would be proud to produce. Thetford has some great talent within its community - it takes a team to pull a performance of this quality together, and what a team they are. Now did someone just say ‘there’s nothing like a dame... Review provided by About Thetford reporter

Out and About Thetford Ancient House Opens New Exhibition
Councillor Robert Kybird, Chair of Breckland Area Museums Committee welcomed guests including the Mayor of Thetford to the new exhibiton launch recently. They were joined by Cllr John Ward, Chair NCC Joint Museums Committee who thanked the Norfolk Museums supporters Arts Council England and Heritage Lottery Fund for their continued support. The new exhibition features more than 60 rare photographs taken by Olive Edis over a period of 55 years from 1900. Speaking about the exhibition Curator Oliver Bone said, “We’re delighted to celebrate the life and work of Olive Edis. I’m really pleased that we have the opportunity to bring the exhibition to Ancient House. Often our exhibitions have a real Thetford focus, but this has more of a wider Norfolk History Club members with their Take Over appeal.” The opening event was also part of a Kids In certificates picture: Norfolk Museum Service Museums‘take-over’ event by the young people who attend two of the clubs held at Ancient House. Members of Teenage History Club helped with refreshments and looking after the guests whilst History Club entertained the guests with a performance about the life of Olive Edis. “Every time I come here it just blows my mind that the children know their stuff and how interested they are in their subject” commented the Mayor after Cllr John Ward presented the young people with their Take Over certificates. MP Visits Horticultural Project As someone interested in the judicial system and mental health issues, Norman Lamb MP was keen to meet the team behind The Horticultural Industry Scheme (THIS) and to find out first hand from some of the participants how they have benefited from the project. THIS was set up by Georgina Keatley and Tim Melvin at the CBC almost 2 years ago. The project supplies local restaurants with micro salad leaves, edible flowers and honey. One previous participant, Craig returned for the visit after a successful placement which led him back into work. Georgina explained that if participants need support in looking for work again once they have finished they can come back and access a job support session. Norman Lamb told the group that he was immensely

impressed that Georgia and Tim had created THIS. “It’s enormously valuable to people, and important we give opportunities to people who have offended. If you give a chance to people that offer is repaid because people appreciate the opportunity. We have a shortage of workers and skills, this is giving someone the skills and motivation and I’m excited by the potential of the project to grow and give people a chance to get themselves back on track.” Georgina responded, “We have got a good track record, no one who has been on the project has reoffended.” During a Q&A session participants had the opportunity to share their thoughts on THIS and the impact it had on them and the training opportunities they can have in prison. One member of group said, “It’s a really positive scheme, it gives people the chance to change, to get back to being themselves, have some self-respect, confidence and earning my own money gives relief on the system.” Another participant followed on, “It’s schemes like this that help people get back to being people.” During his visit Norman asked if the focus should be on horticulture or other areas. Tim explained that THIS have also started a grounds contract service so they can try to tailor placements to people’s needs. The project has also delivered sessions in HMP Highpoint North on opportunities in Horticulture when people are released. For more information on THIS visit: this.org.uk

Register My Appliance Day Residents of Norfolk are being encouraged by the county council’s trading standards team and fire and rescue service to register household appliances and help ensure the safety of their home and family. The 24th January was ‘Register My Appliance Day’, a national campaign encouraging people to ensure they notify manufacturers when they have purchased white goods including fridge freezers, washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers. Registering appliances is important for many reasons. If products are faulty and may need to be recalled the manufacturer can get in contact with the owner of the appliance easily, helping to prevent potential fires. Registering new appliances also ensures that warranties are valid and details can be sent about potential warranty extensions or product upgrades. Taking just a few minutes on the website to register appliances and ensure your address details are correct really can help to save lives. Website: www.registermyappliance.org.uk Councillor Margaret Dewsbury, Chairman of Norfolk County Council’s Communities Committee, said: “We know that appliances are kept for many years and very few people realise that they can register older models. These are the products that are most difficult to trace if a safety repair is ever needed and only their current owners can let manufacturers know that they have them. Our trading standards team can help to spread the word about products being recalled but the only way to find out directly is to register your appliances." With less than a third of large white goods registered when purchased (average 31%), many of the leading manufacturers are offering prize draws or incentives to encourage owners to get their older fridges, freezers, washing machines, dryers and cooking appliances on record, in case a safety repair is ever needed. New research published just recently by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) has specifically looked at multiple-ownership asking where one, or up to four, of each type of appliance is in use in homes. As we don’t necessarily de-commission an old appliance when we buy a new one, this has permitted revised and more accurate estimates of the vast number of large white goods currently running in GB households. The Register My Appliance web portal, is a safety initiative designed by AMDEA to make it quicker and easier to register over sixty leading brands of

appliances, directly with the manufacturer. Recognising the lack of ownership information on many older products, the majority of brands offer registration of products up to at least twelve years old. However, two thirds (67%) of people have never registered an older appliance that they may have bought a couple of years ago, found in their homes when they moved in, were given by family or friends, or bought second-hand. Insight Into Life As A Journalist The world of reporting the latest news, meeting press deadlines, holding the front page, writing headlines and all the other aspects that go into newspaper publishing were brought alive at Thetford Probus Club’s first monthly meeting for 2019. Eschewing a powerpoint presentation, guest speaker John Kitson MBE drew on over 40 years experience working in the industry, where he rose from a junior to chief reporter with the Eastern Daily Press. Much of his long career in journalism was spent covering the Thetford area for what is still Britain’s biggest selling regional daily newspaper. Recounting many of the changes he had seen in the industry, he said that printing and production methods had changed dramatically since the introduction of computer systems. Some things never change though and he prided himself that, at approaching 80, he still uses Pitman Shorthand just he did when he first started as a young journalist, though he admitted he was now slightly slower than the 150 words a minute he could once achieve. Despite many revolutionary developments in the newspaper industry, he lamented what he saw as the accompanying slip in standards of writing and use of the English language, especially in punctuation. Sadly, too, the circulation of today’s printed EDP is a shadow of the five figures it could once boast although the change is largely due to the growth and popularity of online editions, with their huge following. As might be expected, his talk recounted many amusing incidents and he said his job was one that he had thoroughly enjoyed and had been great fun. To round off a hugely entertaining talk, there were plenty of questions from Probus members who then expressed their appreciation LJ Taxis 1/8 AD.qxp_Layout 1 08/11/2017 15:51 in the usual way with a vote of thanks.

Thetford Lions News Once again the Club experienced the generous support of Thetford people in support of its fundraising efforts. A total of £834 was raised from our King Street and Tesco activities on the weekend before Christmas. We have been able to support the Salvation Army Night Shelter, act as a collection point for Thetford Foodbank and provide gifts for more elderly patients at the West Suffolk Hospital. Planning has begun for 2019 fundraising through the raffling of giant Easter Eggs (look out for these at local pubs and other venues), and town centre bric-a-brac and tomobola stalls. A summer time garden party for carers is also planned. The Club would be pleased to hear from anyone who would be interested in joining and contact details can be found on our website and Facebook page. Page www.facebook.com/ThetfordLions/

Write for Rights Amnesty International Thetford group held their annual Write for Rights campaign in Thetford Library in December and dozens of cards and letters were sent to and on behalf of prisoners of conscience around the world as part of the national campaign. The 2018 campaign focused on women around the world doing extraordinary things to protect human rights like Nonhle Mbuthuma, in South Africa who received Death threats for protecting her community. Two years ago the same campaign focused on Johan Teterissa a primary school teacher sentenced to 15 years in prison in Indonesia for waving a flag of independence for his island. Last week he was released after 10 years in prison. Estimates suggest that Amnesty members wrote over 100,000 letters to the Indonesian government from around the world and Johan received between 30-40,000 letters and cards of support whilst in prison. He has said this was an enormous support to him.
an Egyptian lawyer charged and threatened with imprisonment for representing women who have been raped and for suggesting that rape might occur in Egypt.
It’s great to know that being part of such a movement can bring about positive change. The Amnesty Thetford group continues to work on behalf of Azza Soliman

Spotlight On The Thetford Society There is always a danger when you live somewhere that you assume to know everything about it! Our speaker for January was Fraser Harrison dispelled that theory with an informative trip through the history of the Duleep Singh statue. Duleep Singh’s story is well documented, a child Maharajah who after the death of his father was placed on the throne. After the Punjab was annexed by the British after two Anglo-Sikh wars he was eventually exiled in Britain, renounced his faith and became a Christian. He lived with his family at Elveden Hall with a pension set by the Government. Much loved by Queen Victoria he lived the life of the landed gentry. In later years he believed his true wealth was being kept from him and he rebelled. Returning to his original faith, he tried unsuccessfully to reclaim his kingdom, the Punjab. Sadly, he died alone in Paris in 1893. His body was returned and buried in the churchyard in Elveden where he had given a great deal of money in happier times. 100 years later the Sikh community endeavoured to have a lasting tribute erected to him at Elveden. Their plans were huge, and never really gained any traction with the estate management at the time, which was fortuitous for Thetford. Harbinder Singh Rana was the driving force who dealt with the statue and it was his single-minded approach which meant our town was chosen to have a 14 foot high statue of a Sikh Warrior on a horse (not a perfect likeness of Duleep Singh) which was opened by Prince Charles in 1999. Designed by Denise Dutton, a horse sculptress on her first commission, from an initial architectural plan by John Wormald. The original khanda shaped cobbled pathway has recently been replaced with a smooth flagstone base and two benches. Regrettably, the funeral of Harbinder Singh Rana took place in January, after his death in December; a true pioneer of Anglo-Sikh relations, perhaps the statue is also a tribute to his endeavours. Thetford And District Dementia Support Group This month sees the much needed internal building work start at Cloverfield Church, what this means for our TADDS group is that we will not be able to provide a hot lunch until the start of March. However all other group activities will remain unaffected so we will still be there every Friday from 10am, and we will still have hot refreshments available to our group members. This month at group we have a guest speaker on the 8th and music on the 22nd. We also have our Thursday morning group which runs from the Methodist Church Hall on the 4th Thursday of the month which for the month of February will be the 28th starting at 10.30am. TADDS Helping Hands Befriending - If you are caring for someone with a dementia, and in need of some essential “me” time, even if its just to be able to put your feet up half an hour or attend an appointment, then give us a call and we can arrange for one of our befrienders to sit with your loved one; Our befrienders can encourage your loved one to go for a walk, watch TV or engage in other meaningful activities, allowing you as Carer to just have some time out. If you would like more information or need to discuss a possible befriending arrangement, call Jo Cooper on 07724 175827 All details are available on our website www.thetford-dementia-support-group.org
Singers Celebrate A Busy Month Thetford Voices enjoyed their busiest Christmas for some years in 2018. ‘Quire of Voices’ followed their annual visit to the Christmas festivities in Bridgham with participation in Thetford Singers Christmas concert. Their varied programme, well-received on both occasions, ranged from the atmospheric echoes of Cecilia McDowall’s 'The Night is Still' to the energetic, hand-clapping a cappella of 'Shepherds come quick' (Ruth Gray). Friday 21st December was Carolling Day with 65 singers, musicians and leaders gathered to rehearse and sing carols around Thetford. After dividing up to visit Alexandra Court, Hanbury Court, Kings' Court and Ford Place they came together as one for an exhilarating concert performance in St Cuthbert's Church. Also, the collections on the day raised over £200 for Quidenham Children’s Hospice. One more gig awaited: a first time invitation to sing carols during Wyken Vineyards’ Farmers’ Market the next morning. Thetford Voices signed off with yet more enthusiastic singing and playing. Diary Date: Summer Open Workshops: Tuesday 13th & Wednesday 14th August. More details will be posted on: www.thetfordsingers.org.uk/thetford-voices

Busy Few Months For Rotary During the last few months, Thetford Rotary Club has been involved in a number of activities. Looking back to November, the club, together with Thetford Inner Wheel Club organised an Armistice Day lunch for about eighty people at Croxton Village Hall. £1170 was raised for charity, the money being split between the 2 clubs to be passed on to needy causes locally, nationally and internationally. Rotary@CBC members joined forces with their parent club and fundraising collections were held at Tesco, Roy’s and Thetford Garden Centre at which £1,326 was raised. Rotary is very grateful to the three stores for allowing access for these collections, and to the generosity of the public. Sandy Witton, representing the Club, was pleased to attend the Christmas Concert of the Thetford Music Project. A donation of £200 was made to the Project, recognising the excellent work introducing students to the pleasure of playing music for their own entertainment and the entertainment of others. At the club’s January dinner meeting members enjoyed a talk from Keith Tovey, who is a Reader Emeritus at the University of East Anglia. Keith explained the benefits and disadvantages of fracking, more properly known as hydraulic fracturing, which is a means of extracting gas from deep below the ground. Finally both Rotary groups joined together for their first social, cementing the partnership that has developed since Rotary @CBC was established by Thetford Rotary last summer. Inner Wheel The club has been busy during January. At their monthly dinner meeting President Jenny Childerhouse welcomed Tim Jenkins one of the local Norfolk fundraisers for EACH (East Anglian Children’s’ Hospices) who gave an insight into the work of the Hospice at Quidenham and news of the new building called the Nook just outside Norwich. This is a wonderful purpose built hospice complete with hydrotherapy pool which is nearing completion. Quidenham will be handed back to the order of Nuns who own the building which has given many years of extraordinary service. He told us of the help also given at home to children from birth to late teenagers who have life limiting or life threatening illnesses. There are also meetings for siblings of these children who otherwise might feel left out. The support given to such families is quite overwhelming. EACH has been the Inner Wheel Association President’s charity for this area for which she did a zip wire challenge at the Conference at Bournemouth! Thetford who had already donated £500 gave a further £150 to Tim. We learnt it costs over £16,000 per day to run the three children’s hospices in East Anglia. Earlier three members had joined together with others from our District to visit the

Christmas Tree Festival in Stowmarket. They came back full of ideas to have a tree at the Methodist Church next Christmas! Finally to celebrate Inner Wheel Day Thetford joined together with Watton Inner Wheel for a superb afternoon tea and listened to a talk about the Linus Project. This is a group who make quilts to be given to seriously ill children or those going into foster care to keep as their own. The examples Jane Lond-Caulk brought along to show the group drew admiration from all present. The work involved was enormous and the results fantastic. The Month For Love & Well Being With Valentine’s Day just around the corner our thoughts turn to a spot of serious pampering for our loved ones. Relaxation and wellness types of treatments make an excellent choice as a very personal gift which is usually welcome and appreciated by the recipient! In the salon we are busy offering bespoke facials tailored to the individuals needs and requirements along with hot stone massage therapy which has been a popular choice during the cold winter months. The massage involves using large, smooth volcanic stones of various sizes, which are heated in a special water tank. The therapist holds the stones in their hands and glides over the skin using essential massage oils and concentrating on specific areas. It is said that massage using Hot Stones is seven times more effective than a tradition massage! So, if you have never tried a massage before this could be the one for you.

This treatment is deeply relaxing and can not be underestimated at the power it has on the body. It is a cumulative effect and therefore is best as a course, regularly rather than a one-off treatment. A lot of our clients who are time short will opt for two treatments simultaneously such as a facial and pedicure or facial and reflexology. Provided they book in advance to guarantee we have two therapists available to carry-out treatments at the same time. Wishing you a healthy, happy February! Garden Jobs For February February can still bring very cold weather and is traditionally a wet month, called ‘February Fill-dyke’ in the old days. However, there is plenty to be getting on with in the garden. Pruning wisteria and evergreen hedges will keep you warm and you could dig up and divide snowdrops which cope with a move best if they are still ‘in the green’. If the ground is very wet from rain, try to stand on a board or plank to avoid compacting the soil. Another warming job is turning your compost heap. The weight of material can press down and prevent the microbes which perform the magic transformation from getting enough oxygen. Turning also gives you a chance to mix up layers and help keep the texture in balance by adding moist material (ideally kitchen waste but maybe a bucket of water) where things have dried out and dry material (crumpled cardboard or newspaper will disappear very rapidly) to compost that is too wet. It is worth taking action to limit pests early in the year. If you are coming to the end of brussels sprouts and other brassicas, lift the stumps and bury them in your compost heap or even in the ground (ideally where beans or peas will be growing) as this will prevent mealy aphids and whitefly spreading to new members of the cabbage family. If you have a space for a bird box or two, you might consider recruiting some feathered allies against caterpillars. At the same time, you may want to net broccoli to protect it from hungry pigeons in the next few weeks. Now is the best time to prune winter flowering shrubs such as mahonia and viburnum bodnantense, treat yourself to some good gauntlets if you have to tackle a mahonia as it will put up a spirited resistance. Deciduous grasses should be cut back too, along with deadleaves from evergreen grasses. Dogwoods should be pruned now also as it is the young

2019 will be the 13th year people across Thetford have opened their gardens. We’ve had small gardens, large gardens, gardens that are developing and have even had one that had been turned into an outside gym! Some gardens include an activity, game or refreshments which makes Thetford Open Gardens a really special day out. Visitors love to see how people have used their outside space and be inspired. It doesn’t have to be your back garden either, we’ve have also had some impressive front gardens join in on previous years too. Thank you again to the kind people who have nominated us for a TARA award and also to those who have offered to sponsor some of our baking ingredients via our Facebook page. Keep a look out for regular up dates in the coming months and details of where to buy your raffle tickets and programmes for the day. Short-Stopping Swans It’s hard to miss Mute Swans – all along Thetford’s two rivers, pairs and family groups of these majestic birds sail aloof among the geese and ducks and sometimes hiss threateningly if approached too close when resting on the banks. Although largely sedentary, Mute Swans do make some local movements. Counts at BTO’s Nunnery Lakes reserve have peaked at 27 individuals, in the winters of 2011/12 and 2015/16, suggesting that outside the breeding season Thetford probably also receives visiting birds from slightly further afield. However, Britain hosts wintering populations of two other swan species that make more substantial journeys: Bewick’s Swans that breed on the Russian tundra and Whooper Swans originally from Iceland and Fennoscandia. Sometimes referred to as ‘wild’ or ‘winter’ swans, these birds can be distinguished from Mute Swans by the yellow rather than orange areas on their beaks – if seen well enough! Unlike Mute Swans, both of these long-distance migrants also tend to call to one another in flight: a far-carrying, bugling sound. Bewick’s and Whooper Swans visit East Anglia in winter, with the largest concentrations being in the Fens. Coordinated mid-winter censuses organised by the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust, coupled with monthly counts made by Wetland Bird Survey volunteers, are revealing changes in the numbers reaching us.
Bewick’s Swans are becoming increasingly scarce in the UK, so local birder and photographer Neil Calbrade was lucky to find these three briefly resting on the BTO’s Nunnery Lakes in early January
ice and snow-free grazing and roosting sites. With mild winter weather now increasingly common, fewer Bewick’s Swans are crossing the North Sea each year, choosing instead to remain on the Continent. Whilst the Whooper Swan was named for the sound it makes, Bewick’s Swan takes its name from Thomas Bewick (1753–1828), an English ornithologist and artist. His woodcuts of birds and other animals were ahead of their time, and made an important contribution to woodcutting becoming established as an art form. Nick Moran, BTO
The number of Whooper Swans wintering in the UK has been rising steadily since the 1980s, with about 15,000 of these birds now flying non-stop from Iceland each autumn to spend the winter here. In contrast, Bewick’s Swan numbers have been decreasing since the early 1990s, in part through a phenomenon known as ‘short-stopping’. Many waterbirds move from northern breeding grounds to winter further south and west, and they typically only travel as far as necessary to find

Help With Neutering The 26th February 2019 is World Spay Day and in honour of the occasion we are running a neutering campaign for all of February, reducing the cost of neutering to just £5.
Safeguard the long term health of your cat by ensuring that they are neutered
We urge you to do the responsible thing and have your cat neutered. It may protect your cat from future suffering it is the most important action you can take to help the wider cat population. Rita Thompson Don’t forget! There’s lots more to see and read on the About Thetford magazine website: www.aboutthetfordmagazine.co.uk You can read all past copies of the magazine Thetford Raj QP Advert 4_Layout 1 10/01/2017 14:54 online and advertiser testimonials FO B R OO VA K L N D EN OW AY T IN ES
The campaign includes male cats as well! Neutering normally costs around £35 for a male and nearer £60 for a female cat, so this is the perfect time to take care of your cat’s long-term health. If you live in an IP24, IP26, IP27 or IP28 postcode, just give us a call on the number below and we will send you a voucher. You need to tell us the sex, age and name of your cat and which vet you will be taking your cat to. Female cats can come into season as early as 4 months old, and by the time they are around 7 months old, they can have a litter of kittens. A single unneutered female cat can be responsible for 20,000 descendants in just five years, they are more likely to contract diseases spread through sexual contact and also risk cancers of the ovaries, uterus and mammary glands as well as developing pyometra, a serious infection of the womb. Male cats need neutering for many reasons too, including the prevention of testicular tumours. Unneutered males are more likely to be involved in fights, becoming injured or diseased and because male cats travel many miles looking for a mate, they risk being hit by cars. Male cats also spray smelly urine to mark and attract females. During the rest of the year owners on low incomes can apply for neutering vouchers. In these circumstances they must have proof that their income is less than £15,000 a year. But with this scheme, anyone can apply for a voucher and there is no need to prove your income.

The Making Tax Digital opportunity Complying with new digital tax regulations is actually an opportunity to do things better, says Jamie Norton, Partner at Lovewell Blake’s Thetford office. There are now just weeks until one of the biggest changes in the way businesses interact with the tax man comes into effect – and for many, the change will be a big one. Under the government’s ‘Making Tax Digital’ (MTD) initiative, from April most VAT-registered businesses with turnover above the registration threshold will have to submit their VAT return, using proprietary, computerised software. I know plenty of businesspeople who enthusiastically embrace technological solutions, but who remain wedded to the familiar, tried-and-tested way of keeping their accounts. Perhaps there is a feeling of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’; or concerns about the amount of effort involved in learning something new; or even a concern that the new system comes with a slight element of ‘Big Brother’. After the introduction of GDPR last year, some businesses might think that they are facing a tidal wave of new regulation. But just as sensible enterprises used GDPR to use data better for the benefit of their business, so MTD should be viewed not as a regulatory burden, but as an opportunity to improve your business. There are many benefits to cloud accounting: having up-to-date information at their fingertips can transform the way entrepreneurs plan and monitor the progress of their businesses. That information will be more accurate, more timely and more accessible than it would be with traditional record-keeping methods. And the flip side to that ‘Big Brother’ concern is that we may see far fewer HMRC tax inspections with the new system, because HMRC will be more confident that the information behind business’ returns is accurate. Any company which has experienced a full VAT inspection will know just what a time-consuming hassle they can be. The best way to comply with the new MTD regulations, and to enjoy the fullest benefits of making the switch, is via a subscription to a proprietary cloud accounting software. This approach will mean that you
Jamie Norton, Partner at Lovewell Blake writes this month’s column
will always have the most up-to-date version of the software, and that it will be fit for purpose should HMRC introduce more new regulation in the future. More importantly, it will ensure you have the best tools to run your business – as well as saving your valuable time in inputting data. Don’t forget that this technology also allows your business advisers to give better quality advice, because it will also be based on the most accurate, up-to-date information. It may be that MTD is the piece of red tape which forces many businesses to make the move to cloud accounting; I’m pretty confident that the vast majority will look back in a year’s time and be very glad they made the move. Lovewell Blake is holding a series of free Making Tax Digital masterclasses across their offices in East Anglia. It’s Thetford office will be hosting two masterclasses on Tuesday 26th February. The first is being held at 7.45am to 9.30am followed by a second starting at 12.30pm and ending at 2.15pm. Club Scores With Food Collection Thetford Bulldogs and Thetford Rovers have been busy collecting food to support residents in Walmington Court Hostel in Canterbury Way. Run by the Benjamin Foundation, the hostel provides supported housing for single homeless people aged 16 – 25 years.
Their next project is to collect kitchen equipment such as cutlery, plates and small appliances. Thetford Bulldogs is the biggest youth football set up in Thetford with nearly 300 young people signed up to one of the 16 teams including an U16 girls and ladies’ team. They also host a training school for children aged 4-6 years and Wildcats which introduces young girls into football. Thetford Rovers are playing their first season in senior football for over 35 years since gaining promotion last season. For more information about the club please contact Kirsty by email; kturner007@hotmail.co.uk
Winter Wipeout Gala Ed Sheridan (L) with Joanne Simpson (R) from Thetford Bulldogs and Freddie and Austin with some of the food collected for Warmington Court Hostel
After meeting with the Benjamin Foundation, the local football teams decided to create an appeal on their Facebook page and start collecting donations. Club Secretary Kirsty Turner said, “There’s always collections for foodbank which is greatly needed but other charities also need help so it was nice to choose something smaller that might have been overlooked otherwise. We are really pleased with the support we received form our players, their families and friends.” To help the young players understand the value of money, some of their parents gave them £10 and took them shopping to see how much they could get for their money. “It was interesting to see what our players bought, they really thought about what they needed to buy and what the best deal they could get.” The club also set up drop off points at the Charles Burrell Centre and at their Euston site. Thetford Bulldogs have also decided to continue supporting Warmington Court Hostel throughout 2019.

SMART goals are a great way to keep track of your progress and to keep setting the bar higher and at a good pace. SMART is an acronym and this is what it means: S - Specific: What is the next goal you’re setting for yourself? M - Measurable: How are you going to measure your progress? A - Achievable: Is this goal within your own scope? R - Relevant: Are the goals set in accordance to your overall goal? T - Time: When are you going to achieve this goal by? I speak to many people who have changed their whole mindsets by using this Acronym, setting more realistic goals, having that mini fist pump moment when they hit their specific goal and then set new ones.

Parkrunner Of The Month Mick Colledge is our parkrunner of the month for the month of February. We have chosen Mick because he is one of our full time volunteers. Mick is 73 and joined parkrun in 2017. Mick first came to parkrun to support his wife, Sue who had been taking part in parkrun for some months. Mick wanted to see what parkrun was all about. Mick is physically unable to take part in the run due to poor health, but really enjoys socialising with the runners and other volunteers. Mick has supported with marshalling, time keeping and has found a niche where he can help (e.g. bar code scanning) and be an active part of it. Mick proves you don't have to be a runner or walker to become involved at parkrun. Parkrun is supported by the community and completely managed by volunteers. Volunteers help make parkrun happen.
illnesses to contend with. However, volunteering at parkrun each week has given Mick something to look forward to, and he has even found ways to volunteer at other local running events too. Volunteering has also become something that Mick can enjoy with his family as, now, not only does his wife take part, but his daughter and granddaughters as well. Mick has now volunteered at Thetford parkrun 70 times. For more information about volunteering at Thetford Parkrun please visit: www.parkrun.org.uk/thetford/volunteer/
Thetford Golf Club Winter League Glenn Beardsall and Graham Sloan are clearly four-ball better-ball specialists - for the second time they won the Winter League round at Thetford with a cracking score of 43pts. However, they are not so proficient when it comes to foursomes, which accounts for the other half of the overall competition. In their two rounds so far they have scored just 15 and 29pts! They have two more chances to improve on their scores in the remaining rounds of the Winter League, with the best two scores in each format counting. In Sunday's fourth round Beardsall/Sloan returned a back nine of level par for 23pts, to beat Robert Bentley and Paul Garnham on countback. Bentley's birdie at the 18th gave that pairing 21pts on the back nine - but not quite enough. In the overall table previous leaders Steve Burridge & Michael Smith came in with 39pts as their advantage was cut to a single point by Ross Sanford & Rob Taylor, who had 41. It is very tight at the top with just three points separating the top four pairs. Round five, which is a foursomes round took place on Sunday January 27th.

Because of Mick's various illnesses, he was at risk of becoming isolated. In January 2018 Mick was diagnosed with a fast-growing prostate cancer but, with the support of the parkrun team, he was still able to help out (e.g. allowed to park close to the start/finish, provided with a chair). Mick found he was able to discuss the cancer with parkrunners and knowing that they were all rooting for him helped him through his radiotherapy treatments. Mick is currently in remission, although does still have other quite serious
