NEW! - Nominate your Those of us that live in Thetford know that we have a very vibrant community and we have many local residents that go that extra distance to support community life in the town. The About Thetford magazine has long strived to showcase what fantastic community spirit exists with pages and pages of local news, events and information. Starting in January, we would like to feature a different ‘community hero’ each month to recognise those people that so often go unrecognised for their efforts - and we need your help! We are asking our readers to nominate someone that you feel should be recognised as a ‘community hero’. Someone who you believe works hard to support community life, or perhaps goes that extra mile. Someone who perhaps cares for an elderly neighbour, or runs a local voluntary group. All you need to do is to write to us, either by letter or via email and outline why you think this person should be nominated.

Nominations must be received by the 20th of each month

Supported by

We’re delighted that Thetford Garden Centre have agreed to sponsor this initiative and the ‘hero’ chosen each month will be entitled to spend £50 with an advertiser of their choice from that months magazine. Shane Hinkley speaking on behalf of Thetford Garden Centre said; “Thetford Garden Centre understand how important our community is in Thetford and it’s fantastic that our local heroes will be recognised in this way” So, it’s over to you! send you nominations to Community Hero, About Thetford Magazine C/o 21 Crecy Mews, Thetford, IP24 2ZB or e-mail: aboutthetfordmagazine@googlemail.com

“LEST WE FORGET” BY THETFORD METHODIST PLAYERS Performances of “Lest We Forget” by Thetford Methodist Players were part of the” Thetford Remembers 1914-1918” project. The moving documentary drama followed the lives and deaths of Thetford people in the Great War, using original sources and memories and written by Wendy Serjeant especially for the Methodist Players. A collection was taken in memory of David O’Neale OBE, a former colleague of Mrs. Serjeant, with whom she had researched the impact of the First World War on the town of Thetford. £180 was raised for Motor Neurone Disease Association. Thetford Methodist Players have been involved in four events since August 4th 2014, commemorating The Great War.

Swimmers cause a splash at the Disabled Swimming Gala 2014 The event, organised by the Thetford Lions Club, took place on the 15th of November and saw clubs from around the region compete in a number of races with 51 swimmers competing in 32 individual races and 5 team relay races. This culminated in the prize giving for Bronze, Silver and Gold medals by Lions Club Vice District Governor, Chris Crick (Beccles), Chairman of Breckland Council, Robert Kybird, and Thetford Mayor Sylvia Armes. All competitors received a medal of participation. Lion Cheryll & Lion Joel ClarkeMorgan from Newmarket Lions Club and Vice District Governor Chris & Lion Evelyn Crick from Beccles Lions were on hand to assist in the smooth running of the event. Festive Cheer Wiith the holiday season upon us once more and the party season starting we all strive to look and feel good about ourselves. New outfits, shoes and makeup can all give us a much needed boost during the depth of cold wintery days. It’s important too not to neglect your hair, skin and nails at this time. To get the best look when applying your makeup make sure your skin stays well hydrated, by this I don’t just mean drinking water! Central heating combined with cold windy weather will leave the skin parched and chapped. Regular exfoliation for the face, hands and body will help rid the skin of excess dead skin cells and encourage new ones. A regular hydrating masque applied once or twice a week followed by a good moisturiser will help seal in the moisture and not just stick down flakey dead cells! Look for one containing Hyaluronic Acid, it acts as an humectant and helps bind moisture to the skin. A primer applied just before foundation is a good way of getting great results, it can help smooth away fine lines and brighten and even out the skin. Avoid foundations containing talc as they will dehydrate the surface layers. If wearing nail polish or gels regularly make sure to apply cuticle oils/creams this will help to avoid dry hard cuticles and hang nails. The best time could be just before going to bed as it will get maximum time for it to work.

Breckland Cats Protection

THETFORD INNER WHEEL

Tel: 01842 754670 / 01953 681092 We must say thank you to the people who are feeding stray cats that we are not able to take in because we are full to overflowing. The message is not getting through that all these people letting their cats have kittens are causing hundreds of thousands of homeless strays who will never stand a hope of getting a nice cosy home. We have a long waiting list and it upsets us when we cannot take in a cat needing help. Our volunteers have cats in their spare bedrooms and living rooms as well as in pens in their gardens. We need a new volunteer who could take on the trapping of ferals. These are trapped, taken to the vet to be neutered, then returned to where they came from. You would need transport but we pay your mileage. We offer training and support, all we need from volunteers is their time. This could be as little as a couple of hours a week or more if you are available.

This is Milo, approx 1 year old. He is a shy boy but once you win his trust he will be on your lap, legs in the air, having his tummy rubbed. He’s been neutered, vaccinated, blood tested and micro chipped. We have a Christmas Bingo in Brandon British Legion on Wednesday 10th December at 7.30pm. There will be Christmas nibbles on the tables and raffle prizes and a Christmas Hamper. Look forward to seeing you there We have lots more friendly cats and kittens looking for homes. If you can offer a home to any of our rescue cats please contact us either by phone or our web site:

The last few weeks have been very busy for members of Thetford Inner Wheel. Earlier in October, nine members, including President Pat Fuller, went on a day out to the seaside at Lowestoft for the District Rally. There we met the Association President - Thelma Pascoo, who addressed the meeting after lunch. Later in the month members held a very successful Coffee Morning at the home of our Community Service Chairman, Carol Goodchild. A magnificent £450 was raised for the Macmillan Cancer Care Fund at the West Suffolk Hospital. The club would like to thank all who supported that event. Carol will be representing the club at the launch for the new hospice for EACH late in November. At the November meeting, held at the Wereham House Hotel, the District Chairman Yvonne Eaton joined the club for dinner. After inducting Annalee Clarke as a new

member she entertained us with memories of her life in various parts of the country and told us of her chosen charity Canine Partners. It was decided to send a donation of £100 to the DEC Ebola Crisis fund. Plans are in hand for further fundraising and social events next year. Christmas Dinner is the next thing to look forward to!!! Where does the time go?

www.breckland.cats.org.uk Last but not least we would like to thank Marje and Trev for including our articles each month for years in this lovely magazine which is always close at hand as it is packed with information. Good luck to the new owners. Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

THETFORD REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMEMORATIONS Under threatening skies, Thetford prepared for the Remembrance Service on Sunday, 9th November. First to assemble in the square were the town representatives, led by The Worshipful, the Mayor of Thetford, Mrs. Sylvia Armes, resplendent in her regalia, followed by the town councillors all wearing their flowing robes of office. Also present were the High Sheriff of Norfolk, the Countess of Leicester, and Lady Fisher, with representatives from RAF Honington, Mildenhall, and Lakenheath.

Then, led by the Norwich Pipe Band, representatives of all the services processed through the town and swept into the square. The Thetford branch of the British Legion was followed by the RAF regiment, RAF cadets, Army Cadets, The Salvation Army, the Police Cadets, veterans from the services, and then the Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Beavers and Brownies, with representatives of the fire service bringing up the rear. The service began, with large crowds pressed around the Market Place joining with the hymns and responses, and gradually the heavy clouds gave way to blue skies and the sun broke through. As the minister spoke the final words of the service, the clock began to chime eleven; on the final note, the Last Post sounded. The Last Post is normally sounded at the end of the day in the British Army; in this setting, it is symbolic of the dead soldier having finished his duty and is now able to rest in peace. The Last Post was followed by a two minute silence in which to remember the fallen of the many wars that have taken places since 1914, then, as wreaths were laid, the names of those of Thetford whose names are inscribed on the war memorial were read out. We will remember them.

The Thetford Branch of the Royal British Legion would like to take this opportunity in thanking everyone who participated and attended in this year’s concert and Remembrance parade and once again we were blessed with dry weather. This year is a poignant one, with it being the 100th Anniversary of the commencement of WW1, many families within our community will have paid their own private and individual respects. The Thetford Branch spent a weekend touring and visiting the Commonwealth War Graves in Belgium and France, visiting the graves of family and friends. The Branch standards paid homage and wreaths were laid in respect for the fallen in both world wars, and had the honour of taking part in the evening ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. We would also like to thank you the community for supporting the Poppy Appeal once again this year as the money raised goes in helping the members of the Armed Force’s and their families who have suffered losses and suffered terrible injury. On the 11th November the Legion along with the RAFA paraded the standards to lay a wreath on the 11th Hour of the 11th day, of the 11th month as usual, and took part in a service of remembrance at the United Reformed Church in Earl’s Street in the evening.

New World War One Thetford History Book launched on Friday, with evidence for the famous Christmas 1914 truce Thetford saw on Friday the launch of a new book at the town’s Ancient House Museum by the highly respected local historian, David Osborne. A Small Fragment of the Great War tells the distinctive and unexpected story of the town’s involvement in the First World War. The book includes a transcript of a letter from Thetford man Albert Wyatt, which forms one of the tangible pieces of evidence for the truce on Christmas day 1914, now featured in the 2014 Christmas advertisement by one of the major supermarkets. The advert was filmed in East Anglia and there has been debate about the accuracy of the accuracy of the events portrayed, Military Historian Taff Gillingham who was involved in the project told the BBC that evidence for the events had come from a letter from the Thetford soldier Corporal Wyatt. Wyatt wrote in 1914: ‘I regard this as the most historic day ever spent on the battlefield. I arrived in the trenches 24th December and found everything quiet. There was no rifle firing, when we heard someone singing Christmas hymns. Then all at once there were shouts of, “Three cheers for the English”. To our surprise the voice came from the German trenches. Then both our men and the Germans started singing hymns together. ‘On Christmas morning it was very thick and we could not see far in front of us until about mid-day. Then we heard the Germans shouting, “Come over here – we will not fire!” They got out of their trenches and started walking about on the top. Our chaps seeing them did the same. Then all at once came the surprise. The Germans started walking towards our trenches and two or three of our chaps went out to meet them. When they met, the Germans, speaking in English, wished them a “Merry Christmas.” ‘Then came the fun. Everybody on each side walked out to the middle of the two firing lines, and shaking hands wished each other a “Merry Christmas.” To our surprise we found we were fighting men old enough to be our fathers and they told us they had had enough of the war, as they were nearly all married men. We finished up in the same old way, kicking a football about between the two firing lines. So football in the firing lines between the British and Germans is the truth, as I was one who played.’

Florrie Clarke, the teenage daughter of the Official Town Crier and Bill Poster. When he went off to fight in 1916, his daughter took up her father’s bell and is shown in the book in photographs putting up recruitment posters.. There is the history of the Royal Flying Corps at nearby Snarehill Airfield, tank testing just outside Thetford and the many human stories of all the young men who went to serve in Flanders and other areas of conflict. David Osborne’s book forms part of the Thetford Remembers 1914 – 1918 project supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Norfolk County Council, and others. The book launch was well attended and Paul Smyth, Chairman of the Communities Committee at Norfolk County Council, said about the Thetford Remembers project: “The First World War impacted on the lives of millions of people, and each of them has their own story to tell. This project highlights some of those stories, and is testament to the Town’s collaborative spirit and commitment to commemorate the experiences of its war-time residents. It should appeal to anyone with an interest in the war, which is one of the most significant events in our country’s history.’ Stuart Wright, Deputy Mayor of Thetford said “I was thrilled to be present at the launch of David Osborne’s book which will be a great reference book for future generations and allows a greater understanding of Thetford’s role in the first world war.” The book is only available at the Ancient House Museum, Thetford open 10 – 4pm Monday to Saturday.Admission is free and the Museum also features an exhibition Thetford and the First World War, which also opened on the 11th November. The book is priced at £8.95. All proceeds are to be used for further commemorative activities in the town.

Other local stories in the book include that of Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

News from Thetford Probus Chemist talks about his best sellers It’s fortunate that those responsible for organising speaker programmes are frequently very capable speakers themselves and this was certainly the case when Probus’s Danny Jeffrey filled in for the scheduled speaker at the club’s November meeting. His off-the-cuff talk covered a 33-year-long career at local chemical company, Jeyes and his work developing many of the company’s famous products. Starting at their then Plaistow plant in East London, Danny was first appointed Chief Microbiologist then, after they moved to Thetford, Chief Chemist.

Probus’s Danny Jeffery who talked about his 33-year long career at Jeyes

He played a pivotal role in the formulation of a wide range of products that are household names not only in Britain but around the world. Everything from bleach, washing and cleaning liquids, soap and, of course, the novel toilet cleaner dubbed Bloo that became a bestseller with annual sales of 150 million blocks.

the British Association of Chemical Specialities and has many local interests besides his membership of Thetford Probus. He has served as a governor of Rosemary Musker School, a member of the environment committee of the Thetford Society and is President of the Thetford Liberal Democrats Association.

“Developing and perfecting this product was one of my most challenging jobs,” recalled Danny. “The blocks have to last for at least a month, but being submerged in water demands a composition that only allows it to dissolve gradually. It took about a year to get it right and several years to obtain patent to protect the formulation.”

Taking the meeting for the first time was newly appointed chairman, Mike Brindle. His predecessor Trevor Burlingham, who has stepped down because of illness, thanked Mike for his help as Secretary during his years as Chairman. Les Howard has now taken on the role as Secretary. Member, Mike Kew, paid tribute to Arthur Everett, who died in November. Arthur was an honorary member, having joined Probus in 1989 and served as past Chairman. Members showed their respect by holding a minute’s silence.

Danny spoke about his work on many disinfectants, insecticides, germicides and antiseptics, some for agriculture, helping prevent and control foul pest and foot and mouth disease in cattle, while others for domestic use, such as anti-louse shampoo to prevent head lice in humans. Retiring in 1994, Danny is a past chairman of

“I’m behind on my energy bills, credit cards and rent and my phone is ringing constantly with people demanding money. The stress is getting me down and I don’t know how I’m going to pay what I owe. What can I do?” The most important thing is not to panic. Remember that this is a common problem and help is freely available from Citizens Advice. Dealing with debt is daunting and at times seems insurmountable, but it is better in the long run to tackle your debts rather than taking out more loans. You first need to get a clear idea of who you owe money to: make a list of your creditors then work out which debts you should prioritise. The most important debts are those that would have the most serious consequences if you didn’t pay them. You should look to get rent and energy bills sorted first so your home isn’t at risk and so that your water and electricity keep running. Once you know your priorities, you should try to get a clear idea of how much money you have spare. Make a list of all your income and spending. Go through your spending line by line and think about any savings that you could make: can you cut any spending? Or switch your energy supplier? Can you walk to work and not take transport? Next, give your debtors a call. Stay calm and be honest with them: tell them how much you have available and see if you can agree a repayment plan with them. If you can’t see any spare cash and do not have anything you can sell to makes ends meet, then it is much better to first seek help than to take out a loan. Loans can sometimes end up getting you more into debt rather than helping you. You should remember that Citizens Advice can help you at any stage, and more advice is available. Alternatively you can visit us at Breckland House, St Nicholas Street on Tuesday, Thursday or Friday, 10am – 3pm. If you have a couple of hours to spare and would like to volunteer at your local CAB, we offer training and support in advice, administration and reception. Please pop in or telephone 01842 754310 for an application form.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club

BETTS of BRANDON Ltd

Some people are lucky enough to have space in their gardens for fruit trees and now is a good time to go out pruning apples and pears to keep the centre open. This does not apply to plums which have to be pruned in the summer. December is also a good month to plant new fruit trees so that they can start to establish roots before the severe frosts. If you do have trays of apples it can be a nasty shock to attempt to pick up one which has started to rot. Imagine how much worse it is to try to grasp a marrow that has gone soft! There is nothing to get hold of and it took a fish slice to clear the gunge up – ah well, all good for the compost heap. I then checked the apples and found several sad ones needed removing. Any fruit or vegetable in store needs the occasional check. If you want to plant some bare-root raspberry plants, you can clear and prepare the area now so that you easily set them when they become available. Autumn fruiting rasperries are my preference; they don’t seem to suffer from bird attack or grubs and I was picking the odd handful of berries until mid-Novermber this year – such a special flavour in a fruit salad. They don’t take up much room so why not give them a try?

BR Garden Services All Garden Maintenance

It is gardening law to put a tennis ball in a fish pond to help deter ice from forming across the whole surface. I have never had a pond but it sounds good sense. I certainly plan to put some protection around the outside tap. You can buy protective covers but a home-made bubble wrap version will also do the job. That’s if you have any bubble-wrap left from making a snug area in your greenhouse for delicate plants. We all enjoyed seeing our neighbours’ tubs and hanging baskets all summer, and now the containers can be filled with ivy, heathers and pansies for a splash of brightness to last through the winter. A tub of winter plants can make an excellent Christmas present too. While you’re thinking of presents for others, you might want to treat yourself to the gift of membership of the TCAC – with monthly talks, a non-profit shop, a BBQ, 3 shows, a trip etc. it’s excellent value for £6.50! Happy Christmas to all readers. Sue Pilgrim

You may not be aware of just how much fantastic work goes on within the town and how many volunteers are involved. The Town Council would like to express their sincere thanks for all their efforts. Its part of what makes our town so special. Reporting issues, though, can be a complicated business so the Town Council are currently workng on a helpful flyer and an update to their website (which should go live early in 2015). In the meantime here’s how to report any issues that you might come across within the town: For litter, dog mess, waste, abandoned vehicles, noise or nuisance, contact Breckland District Council: www.breckland.gov.uk – go to the top right of the home page and select ‘Report It’ and then choose a topic from the list, a form will appear for you to complete. Alternatively you can email the issue to contactus@breckland.gov.uk or call customer services on 01362 656870 (Monday to Thursday 8am to 6pm, Friday 8am to 5pm). For street lighting or highways contact Norfolk County Council: www.norfolk.gov.uk – go to the top left of the home page select ‘Report’ and then scroll down until you find what you need. Allternatively call 0344 8008020 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm). You may prefer to visit www.fixmystreet.com as this site allows you to report, view or discuss local problems without the need to work out whose responsible for what – someone else does that for you. We would urge everyone to report everything they can – help us to help you. Don’t forget that you may have a local residents group, working hard for your area – visit www. thetfordtowncouncil.gov.uk and select ‘links’. In addition you also have 16 Councillors who represent you. Alternatively call us on 01842 754247 or call into King’s House just behind the Thomas Paine statue.
