Welcome to the January 2015 About Thetford Health and Fitness special feature.... Hello and a warm welcome as we move to the end of 2014 and start a whole new year. It's the time of year when many people look forward to a fresh start in life and decide to improve their health and fitness. Whether your goal is to lose weight, exercise regularly or stop smoking, embrace the New Year, look to a New You! Locally we have many clubs, groups and instructors that offer a high quality, professional and diverse range of classes and services; there is something for everyone and you have the support you will need to achieve your goals. Reading through the advertisements and case studies and testimonials I feel very proud on what the town offers for the health of the community. Many people ask what is the best form of exercise, what is the best weight loss method. We are all different, some body types respond better to certain training systems, if an individual has an injury or medical condition certain types of exercises may be advised against. This applies to dare I say ‘diets’. Many have tried various fad diets - great for initial weight loss but being healthy is a lifestyle, be the best version of you, aspire for total health & well being. Look for something you enjoy, the more you enjoy the more you do! In best health, Michelle x P.S. We would love to hear your health and fitness goals, send them to; michelle@michellejermyfitness.co.uk Those individuals that achieve their goals and are willing to motivate / inspire others will be featured in our New Year edition 2016.

Thetford Pamper Zumbathon & Market 2014 raised £9,000 for three excellent charities

Over £6,000 raised for Cancer Research UK through Thetford Race to Life 2014

We are extremely proud to announce our final total for the Thetford Pamper Zumbathon and Market 2014 is £9000.56!!! In 2014, we supported three charities East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), Stillbirth & Neonatal Death charity (SANDS) & Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSHC). Cheques for £3000.18 were presented by Zumba Lou Lou to Ruth Beattie on behalf of GOSHC, Sharon Wing on behalf of SANDS and Juliet Garnham on behalf of EACH at a presentation evening. This is our second event, previously we raised an amazing £5,300 for EACH and couldn’t comprehend beating that.We are so pleased when we thought we would reach £7000 but £9000 is a truly outstanding amount. The money raised for GOSHC will be put towards the cost of a new echocardiogram (which currently costs in the region of £249,000). This is a piece of equipment used to examine the heart and provide information on the condition of the chambers, valves and major blood vessels. In addition to showing the health of the heart, the test can help identify types of heart disease, or the effectiveness of treatment. GOSH currently scan 12,000 children’s hearts a year and this machine will replace some of the older end of life machines but also enable GOSH to set up extra outpatient clinics, meaning children are seen and treated earlier than ever before which can be lifesaving. We would like to thank everyone who took part in the event, stall holders, entrants, helpers, guest instructors, fundraisers, sponsors and donators for making the event a success again this year! If you are interested in sponsoring or supporting next year’s event, and making a difference to local lives please contact Zumba Lou Lou on 078660534087 & Zumba-loulou@hotmail.co.uk

Sign up for Race for Life 2015! A cheque for £6417.85 was recently presented to Tom Bamford, Norfolk Co-ordinator for Cancer Research UK. The funds were raised at the Thetford Race for Life event held held during 2014. Organiser Mark Robinson, said: “I’m delighted with the huge amount of money raised, this would not have been possible without the support and generosity of the community. This is the second year we have hosted Race for Life in Thetford, the event goes from strength to strength. I have been overwhelmed by people’s kindness and wish to thank all people who contributed to a great day. Plans are already at the advanced stage to deliver a bigger fun event in 2015 to raise much needed funds for a worthy cause". The next event will be taking place on the 26th July 2015 and will be for both men and women. Registration details will be published soon and this year we will be opening up an online registration process to make taking part even easier. Please do get in touch if you wish to help out with this event in any way. To get involved contact Mark on 07864 882768 email: mark@dust-free.co.uk

Jo is always there to give me the motivation to put that bad week in the past and to get right back on track and I've maintained my goal weight for over a year now. I still look forward to the weekly class, not just because it helps me to stay motivated, but also because I have made some good friends at class and through the social events that Jo organises." "My fitness levels have greatly improved as a result of my weight loss and Jo's classes, so much so, that I now participate in classes at Leisure Centre as well as the Thetford Parkrun which I joined 18 months ago. This in turn has led to me taking part in a number of 5k and 10k races and this August saw me completing my 1st marathon followed fairly swiftly by 3 more. At the age of 64, I can honestly say that I am now much fitter and healthier than I was in my 30's."

"After retiring from a busy work life, I decided to join the Thetford Rosemary Conley Class. From a size 18 I soon managed to trim down to a 14 but then my weight yoyo'd for a few years until 2009 when the classes were taken over by Jo Butcher (which last year became Jo's fit4all classes.) Jo proved to be the motivation I needed. She herself had lost a lot of weight and her enthusiasm was infectious. Her exercise classes are fun and filled with humour, with everyone encouraged to work at their own level. With her support and encouragement, I found the determination to shift a further stone and finally in Spring 2013 I achieved my target weight of 8st 7lbs (a 3 stone weight loss) and now fit comfortably into size 10 clothes. I may gain a lb or two from time to time, but

So what do the student's think? "When Sarah approached me to hold a class at Thetford Academy I was excited to be able to offer a new class to our community, but even more so that I would be able to join in on Tuesday evenings. Like most mums my life can be very frenetic. Running in the woods helps to keep a sense of balance; however finding quiet time is more challenging. That's what Yoga has brought to my life in these few short weeks since we started our practice, quiet time to reflect, regroup my thoughts and restore some equilibrium to my life. Sarah is an inspirational teacher and I'm looking forward to continuing our journey in 2015” SARA C “I love going to Sarah’s classes. The classes are really friendly and have a really positive atmosphere. I find it helps me relax and quieten my mind especially if I have had a busy day. I also feel like I am starting to build my body strength and loosen tight muscles, I am sure this is all helping with my other hobby, running“ CAROLINE P Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

Tracey’s story... how Slimming World changed my life.. My name is Tracey Foster, for most of my life I have had a weight problem and have tried so many diets where I’d lose weight then gain it again once I stopped going. But in 2009 I decided to actually do something about it once and for all. With the help of a friend, I went to my first Slimming World Class at Cloverfields Church run by Shani Yates. I couldn’t give anyone eye contact because I didn’t feel that I deserved it, so used to huddle at the end of the row of chairs and only speak when spoken to..

the wrong route again. My exercise routine, well, what can I say. From never doing anything, to now, Two years ago I swam the English channel at my local baths for Aspire. All this from a person who until last year was told I could end up in a wheelchair as my legs were giving up.

That was then….Now, I have lost 11.5 stone, and am on the final stage to get to target. I wouldn’t say it’s been easy as there has been times when I struggled. But at Slimming World it’s not a diet, it’s a way of life. Everyone says cut this out, cut out that, but with Slimming World there are no forbidden foods. Not only have I gained confidence but with the help of exercise, this has helped me to realise that I will not go back down

Editor’s note: Thank-you to Tracey for sharing her story with us and congratulations on what you have achieved. We hope that it will inspire others.

THETFORD PARK-RUN... how it began! Has managing weight or fitness been difficult for you? Are you apprehensive of joining a gym or you do not have the spare finances to join a gym? So, how can you lose weight and get fit in a friendly environment?. In 2013, Melanie Floyd, a runner thought about bringing parkrun to Thetford with the aim of improving fitness for people of all abilities and all levels of fitness. Four years ago Melanie was a non runner herself and trained herself to complete the London marathon in 2011. Since 2011 Melanie has completed 89 marathons and in 2014 completed 57 marathons in a year. Melanie with a small core team obtained funding from Moving Thetford Forward, Town Council, Breckland Council and Parkrun UK to set up a parkrun. Parkrun is 100% supported by volunteers from the community and takes place at 9am every Saturday morning. The start and finish of the parkrun is at the Priory car park. The aim of parkrun is to attract walkers, runners and joggers and we have people who can complete the 5k (3.1 mile) run from 16 minutes to over an hour. Time is not a factor and we welcome walkers equally. If you think 5k is too much to begin with we encourage and support people to start less and build up. We ask participants to register at www.parkrun.org.uk where you can obtain your own personal athlete number and monitor your improvement each time you take part. We are a very social group and everyone is supported. Youngest taking part is 4 years old right through to someone in their 70’s. On average Thetford parkrun attracts over a 100 participants each week and we have a good collaboration with Slimming World as well. The volunteers of parkrun are passionate about exercise and we also have a social run group on a Tuesday evening who complete a 5k run in the winter and a 5-10k run in the summer. We also have a group on a Sunday morning who complete an endurance run which means they are able to work towards taking part in 10k events through to marathons.

Thetford Park Run meets every Saturday morning at 9am at the car park near to the Priory entrance on Water Lane - it’s free to take part. Register at: www.parkrun.org.uk/thetford

Your first ‘community hero’ has been chosen! After consideration of all the entries that we received, we are pleased to announce that Digby Smith has been chosen as the ‘community hero’ for this month’s edition. Digby was nominated by two people; Stuart Wilson and Jane Varanand. Stuart said; “I wish to nominate Digby Smith for the Community Hero award. Digby is an active member of the Thetford Society serving on the Environmental Committee. For seven years Digby has run the ‘River Corridor Group’. This group are tasked with the objective of keeping Thetford’s river corridor a place to be proud of. Each week, whatever the weather or time of year, on a Thursday morning, Digby and his band of volunteers walk the river banks and surrounding areas working to keep footpaths open, to clear litter, fallen trees, and invasive plant species as well as reporting their concerns to the necessary authorities. Digby co-ordinates the work and liaises with Breckland Council, the Town Council, the Environment Agency and SERCO to ensure that work is not duplicated, is carried out legally and the mounds of debris are collected to be disposed of. Jane Varanand added; “It can often be a thankless task - picking up so much rubbish etc. and I shouldn’t think a lot of people in Thetford even know that it is being done. A great guy and definitely an ‘unsung’ hero” Congratulations to Digby, and also to all the volunteers that assist with the River Corridor project. Thanks to Thetford Garden Centre he now has £50 to spend with an advertiser of his choice from the January magazine.

January ‘Community Hero’ Digby Smith

What’s it all about?

Those of us that live in Thetford know that we have a very vibrant community and we have many local residents that go that extra distance to support community life in the town. Starting this month we will feature a different ‘community hero’ each month to recognise those people that so often go unrecognised for their efforts - but we need your help! We are asking our readers to nominate someone that you feel should be recognised as a ‘community hero’. Someone who you believe works hard to support community life, or perhaps goes that extra mile. So, it’s over to you! Send you nominations to Community Hero, About Thetford Magazine C/o 21 Crecy Mews, Thetford, IP24 2ZB or e-mail: aboutthetfordmagazine@googlemail.com Nominations must be received by the 15th of each month

New Years Resolutions

Halcyon Days

Now Christmas is behind us, all the decorations have been packed safely away and we feel we may just have indulged a little bit more than we meant to! Usually we like to start the New Year with a resolution to improve ourselves in some way. This may be in the form of taking something up or giving up something. I think we try too hard and then get disappointed with ourselves if we don’t succeed. This year perhaps approach any new interests, such as being more healthy or making more time for doing things you enjoy by tackling it in a different way:Organise yourself in shorter amounts of time, for example, make a plan of things you need to do and also things you would like to do. Then see how you can slot some of your like to’ s into your week. Reward yourself with healthy treats when you feel you have been good, all be it a trip to the gym or the salon.

The lovely Milo, from last month, found his forever home. Little Molly who had the knee operation is bouncing around now and is ready for her new home. She needs a home without young children. We start rehoming again on 3rd January. All our cats are with us through no fault of their own but through manmade conditions and they deserve permanent, loving homes. We have lots of friendly cats and kittens. If you can offer a home to any of our rescue cats please contact us either by phone or our web site: www.breckland.cats.org.uk where you will find a link for our Facebook page.

Thetford Rotarians with their partners enjoyed their Christmas Dinner at West Suffolk College’s Edmunds Restaurant. The first year students provided an excellent three course meal preceeded by very tasty canapés. It is a pleasure to be served by enthusiastic youngsters just starting their careers in catering. The Reverend Bob Baker entertained with an irreverent grace and amusing reflections on the meaning of Christmas. Following the entertainment members agreed to donate £200 to Thetford Food Bank.

The December meeting of the Thetford Society heard Vince Thurkettle speak on his love of wood fires - an appropriate topic for what was a frosty winter’s evening. His long association with trees and burning wood made for a fascinating talk. He touched on the great importance and long history of fire itself, the ethics of using trees for fuel and how we might get the best results from our own domestic fires. Copies of his book The Wood Fire Handbook sold well. Mr Thurkettle is also an expert on gold panning and it is hoped that he will return to share his knowledge on that topic on another occasion.

It had been decided that we would send extra support to the Thetford Food Bank this month, and a collection of foodstuffs was given, which was later taken along to the Food Bank by Carol Manderfield and Carol Goodchild. Following our Christmas meal, an entertaining quiz, organised by Marie Muir rounded off the meeting. Mary Rolton, Club Correspondent.

The society’s Christmas buffet will take place on January 3rd and the next meeting is on January 6th at 7.30pm at the URC when the subject will be “50 years of Radio Caroline in 50 minutes”. New members are always welcome. Corinne Brindle, Secretary

Introducing Mark Snowdon... Manager of the Charles Burrell Centre The Charles Burrell Centre opened for business in May this year, almost a year after the former secondary school on the same site had closed. Thetford Town Council requested to lease the site from Norfolk County Council in order to open it as a community and business centre to benefit the people of the town. In September, Mark Snowdon was appointed as the Centre Manager and has continued to ensure the development of the site by supporting its tenants and securing new ones. Mark was formerly the Duty Manager at the Breckland Leisure Centre and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the project. “I am a former pupil of the school and having spent over nine years in local leisure management, I took a very keen interest in the site’s plans. I was subsequently very excited to be given the opportunity to help the centre thrive. I have lived in Thetford my entire life and have three young children so this community is very important to me. My plan is to make Charles Burrell Centre the very heart of this community with a vision of it providing support to local business, helping create new ones and providing the area with a busy and vibrant hub that unites people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities”. The centre will run as an independent entity from April 2015 following the Town Council’s approval of plans to form a cooperative. This will give the tenants and the wider community a chance to become shareholders and have a say in the future running of the centre. Shares are now available to purchase and can be bought from the reception at Thetford Town Council at Kings House, Thetford.

tel: email:

The Centre also welcomes any volunteers that wish to help in this community project or gain valuable work experience. There are many roles available including reception duties, maintenance tasks, cleaning and gardening. For more information please call 01842 779867 or email: marksnowdon@thetfordtowncouncil.gov.uk

News from Thetford Probus Horse racing empire that’s a key part of Thetford’s economy Just how much globalization affects us all was vividly illustrated by Shadwell Estate’s Finance Director Chris Kennard when he spoke at the Thetford Probus Club December meeting. Giving a wide-ranging insight into the work of the famous Stud, based at the 6,000-acre Shadwell Estate, Mr Kennard explained its importance as a premier breeding centre in the world of horse racing. He pointed out that this makes major contribution to the local economy, too, not least through jobs - 160 people are employed on the estate making it one of the largest employers in the area - along with investment in conservation and support for community charities and projects. Statistics such as the planting of 25,000 trees, creating 25 miles of hedges, with 1.3 kilometres completed along the B1066 this year, show how this is a priority. He also referred to the importance of Wildlife in the estate’s policy of biodiversity by providing breeding boxes for barn owls and preserving habitat for over 120 varieties of wild birds including Stone-curlews.

Chris Kennard of the Shadwell Estate presents Charles Napier with his prize, a shoe & boot horn in polished aluminium

Taghrooda’s grand sire, command many thousands of pounds for every mare they cover and he reputedly had some 1300 partners at the stud! Mr Kennard added that the Sheikh has 666 horses in training throughout the world and ranked as the second biggest owner of Arabian thoroughbreds, only eclipsed by his brother, the Ruler of Dubai. In a snap quiz concluding his talk, Probus member Charles Napier won a boot and show horn, not surprisingly with an elegant handle in the shape of a horse’s head.

Local Chimney Sweep All Sweeps Certificated

In its’ involvement with the community Mr Kennard indicated that many local projects benefited, particularly schools through an annual art competition, while the East Anglian Ambulance also receives significant support. He added that all this would not happen, but for the estate owner’s love of the sport of horse racing.

THETFORD TOWN COUNCIL

Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven....

As an enormous crowd gathered in eager anticipation for the Thetford Christmas light switch on, the town centre buzzed with laughter, chatter, noise and excitement. The Mayor of Thetford Councillor Sylvia Armes arrived in style, joined by the Sheriff of Norwich, William Armstrong, and his wife Monica as well as Father Christmas in his sleigh before Town Crier Mike Wabe gave a cry written especially for the occasion, leading the large crowd in an enthusiastic count down for the switch on. The Mayor then pressed the button lighting up the town centre. Father Christmas then travelled to his grotto on Guildhall Street, saying hello to all the excited children as he passed. Many then queued to meet Father Christmas in his grotto and receive a little treat. They were also able to meet his friends the reindeer who were positioned next to his grotto. The fun continued throughout the evening with the fair rides on Well Street, the Continental Market on King Street and the Sort It Christmas Fair in the Guildhall. Also hugely popular in the Guildhall, the children of Thetford were entertained by Elsa and Anna, whilst Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Carl the Minion and Peppa Pig entertained those on the Market Place. Thetford Town Council would like to thank the following for their sponsorship of the Christmas Lights: About Thetford (Trevor and Marje Bowden), Breckland Accountancy Limited, British Heart Foundation, David Turner Funeral Services, Discover Hair, Hudson Property Services Ltd, L Gray & Sons Funfairs, Metcalfe, Copeman & Pettefar Solicitors, Royal British Legion, Simark Accountants, Simon Long Removals, Specsavers Opticians, Rudlings Wakelam Solicitors, Wereham House Hotel. Happy birthday to Bouncin’ Bubbles! All parents know the problems of juggling work with family life, and Nicole King, with a two year old and three older children, wanted to be there for her family while she made a living. She spotted a gap in the market, bought two bouncy castles, and so Bouncin’ Bubbles was born. January marks the first birthday of this new business and now Nicole has nine bouncy castles as the business has grown...and grown! First family, friends, then through social media to the wider world, people have heard about Bouncin’ Bubbles, and castles have been hired out to private parties, weddings, community events, sports facilities and local pubs. And not only does Nicole offer bouncy castles, but she (with her partner) can also appear as Elsa and Olaf, two characters from Frozen, last seen at Bury St. Edmunds Christmas Fair. All castles are set up for you, and all the safety aspects are explained fully, and of course they are fully insured and safety checked. Don’t let the weather put you off, as they can be set up inside, as long as there is enough room. As a special first birthday present, Bouncin’ Bubbles are giving a 10% discount to all bookings made in January!

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club

BETTS of BRANDON Ltd

Happy New Year! Here’s a suggestion for a New Year resolution: grow something to eat at your next Christmas dinner. It can be very satisfying to see something you grew on the plate, especially if you have visitors. However it does take some planning when you select your seeds as some plants, like leeks, have early, midseason and late varieties. Now is a good time to make a list of what you plan to grow and to read through those tempting catalogues again. The house can look a bit bare once the cards and decorations have been removed – though little bits of twinkle will be with you for some weeks! Hopefully, you have some indoor winter plants to brighten the rooms. Poinsettias are a recent introduction but now well established as a Christmas feature. Do you remember how expensive they were a few years ago? Now they are cheaper than fresh flowers and give weeks of pleasure – in fact I still have one from last year. You can encourage them to produce more red bracts if you control the hours of light and dark; mine is mainly green but still very attractive. It turns out that they come from Mexico where they grow like weeds!! With grafting and selective breeding the producers now provide us with bushy plants and pink and white bracts as well as red. Keep them on the dry side and they will go on looking cheerful. If you have let your shed or greenhouse get a bit untidy – ‘filled with things that will come in useful one day’ is how I describe it – choose a sunny day, muffle up and have a sort out. There may be some treasures there or perhaps you can get rid of a stack of rubbish. There will be so many things to do once Spring is in the air that having your tools ready for use and pots and seeds sorted out will be a great help. This month is also a good time to get your mower serviced. And as a reward, come along to our January meeting on Thursday 29th January at 7.30 in the URC; Clare Simm from the BTO will be entertaining us with a talk about ‘Garden Birds’. Sue Pilgrim

Thetford and District Dementia Support Group The last 4 months of 2014 have been amazing for the newly launched Thetford and District Dementia Support Group. We have held a weekly group meeting on a Friday between 10am and 1pm in the lovely lounge area of Lord Walsingham Court, which has seen our group members enjoying crafts, reminiscence activities, poetry and a variety of speakers on different subjects. December was no exception with a great display of cameras for people to look at, brought in by our volunteer and committee member Robin (see below!).

If you are someone caring for a person with dementia or if you have dementia and would like more information, or would like to be part of our fantastic group, please contact us on taddsgroup@hotmail.com or by mobile at 07542 866 519 or just drop in and visit us at Lord Walsingham Court and see Jo, Vanessa, Yvonne or anyone of our friendly volunteers you will be made most welcome. We have already set in motion a number of outings for this coming year for group members to enjoy and of course we are always looking for able volunteers. We are on Facebook at Thetford and District Dementia Support Group, please stop by and "like" us to keep up to date with all the group happenings, support information and training. We have been fortunate to receive donations which have supported our room hire and will help with the purchase of more activities for people to enjoy in 2015. Thank you especially to; Centre Stage Engineering Ltd and Housing and Care 21, their tenants and manager Heather Hart. As we go forward into 2015 a big thank you also to our team of volunteers and our lovely members we look forward to working with you all this year! "
