Thetford Boxing Club Host Inaugural Home Show Thetford Boxing Club hosted its first ever Home Show recently, an event superbly organised by Charlie Dean. Over 260 guests attended, with 144 enjoying a perfect 3-course meal and table service. About Thetford Assistant Editor Karen-Emma White was delighted to join the event on behalf of the magazine. The evening began with the compere announcing “It’s so good to see boxing back on the map in Thetford!” For Thetford Boxing Club, the show was the culmination of 18 months of hard work after setting up the club in 2016. The evening consisted of 9 fights with 3 rounds each featuring boxers from both the Juniors in their first skills bouts and Seniors matched to counterparts from other clubs. Boxers travelled from as far away as Essex, Portsmouth and the East Midlands to take part. Junior members diligently showed guests to their table and displayed the round cards outside of the ring during the fights. The Dean family were well represented by Connor, Alfie, Roni and Taylor, with Archy Stannard, Charlotte Thomas and Harvey Lott also fighting. Speaking about the event, Head Coach Matt Dean said, “I am buzzing about tonight, I thought it went well, we’ve tried to jazz it up a bit for the kids and engage the younger members.”

Members of Thetford Town Boxing Club pictured at the Home Show at Charles Burrell centre

delighted to be asked to present a trophy during the evening. Thetford Town Boxing Club Chair, Pat Pearson summed the evening up perfectly when he said, “It’s been a very good evening, a huge amount of organising, but the club has worked together as a team, everyone has had their job and look at what they’ve achieved.”

Thetford Town Boxing Club are now fund raising for their own mini bus to enable them to get their boxers out more. Old Skool Bar who provided the bar and table service at the Home Show have helped with the fundraising by donating £350. If you would like to help by sponsoring either a boxer or donating towards the mini bus fund, please email sponsors@thetfordtownboxingclub.co.uk

The evening was well supported by the spectators who encourage both fighters during their bouts. Shaun, a retired Flyweight boxer told Karen, “No matter how fit you are, when you get in the ring, you tire really quickly. There have been some really good boxers here, it’s been hard to call on some on the fights.” Barry Trainor and Veronica Nimmo have long standing links with boxing in Thetford, Barry told Karen he was ‘over the moon’ with the evening and Veronica said she was

New Year, New Challange How about Zumba? Zumba Fitness is one of the most popular exercise crazes in recent years, and with good reason. By joining a Zumba class you will get a fantastic full body workout, aid weight loss, and improve not only your fitness, but also your coordination, which is extremely important as you grow older. Dancing, however, does not benefit only young people. The health benefits of dancing for seniors include positive impacts on your physical health with improvements in posture, stamina, agility and flexibility, to creating strong social connections that increase your sense of happiness and well being. There has also been studies citing that dance, more than any other leisure activity reduces the risk of dementia. From January, I’m excited to add 2 NEW Zumba Gold classes to my timetable aimed at the active older adult. It is also the perfect introduction for beginners as it is low impact and easy to follow.

New Years Resolutions! Type ‘New Years Resolution’ into Google and this is what you’ll find; “A New Year's resolution is a tradition, most common in the Western Hemisphere but also found in the Eastern Hemisphere, in which a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behaviour, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life”. What it doesn’t state is most people make these resolutions and break them within the first month of committing to this new way of life! The question is, are you one of these people? New Functional Fitness Suite now available Facebook: TFFunctionalFitnessSuite Mobile: 07737 582906

In the fitness industry, I see a big interest in health and fitness take place in January, which more commonly than not isn’t followed up in the months shortly after. We all have these amazing thoughts of how we’re going to give up smoking, lose weight and get fit but what do we actually put into place to make this happen? Give up smoking cold turkey, Join a gym, then what? When setting yourself a new years resolution, give yourself a chance and set yourself a goal. So if you’re planning on quitting smoking, look to cut down weekly before actually cutting them right out. If you’re planning on becoming healthier and fitter, seek help and advice from a professional who you can discuss your goals with and put a plan of action together. Talk about your diet, your current exercise regimes and what sports you like to do and see where you can incorporate the lot. If joining a gym isn’t for you but you’d still like the perks of a gym, then send me a message regarding my NEW Functional Fitness Suite based at CBC, Thetford. We hold classes from Circuits and Tabata to Boxercise and Core. Private Hire is also available if you’d like to rent space to train by yourself or with a friend, as well as Personal Training. Good luck with your New Years Resolution, no matter what it is, give yourself a fighting chance and plan ahead

of things and great fun was had by all,” explained Sam. “It was unfortunate that we happened to be in one of the worse places in the country for snow that weekend. However, we had a great day on the Saturday and did really well in the competition. Our next big competition is in February so we’re hoping there won’t be snow next time!”

The first day of the competition saw some notable success for Thundercats, with a first place for Tiny Pom and Mini Stunt, 2nd place for Mini Cheer and Youth Pom, 3rd place for Mini Pom and 6th place for Youth Cheer. Unfortunately the snow arrived overnight resulting in the second day of the competition being cancelled. Out and About Thetford

Charity Concert Success Thetford’s Carnegie room was filled with the sound of beautiful singing as Admirals Singers joined forces with Thursday Nights and a live band headed up by Simon Barnett. Over the past 4 years, money raised from the performance has been donated to The Quicken Trust, a charity that improves the lives of the people in Kabubbu, Uganda. This community has been ravaged by poverty, despotism, epidemics such as malaria and AIDS and failing harvests. Thanks to the work of The Quicken Trust, Kabubbu now has access to fresh Below: Geoff & Geraldine Booker from Quicken water, schools, a dispensing clinic, hospitals and training. 100% Trust with the Mayor and Simon & Fiona Barnett of the donations are used to continue the work in Kabubbu. The parents of Alice from year 6 told Karen, “We’re so proud that our daughter is part of this, even after she broke her ankle.” Along with the Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Dennis Crawford, the Carnegie was packed full as the story of Mary and Joseph was told using narration, songs and an interesting slide show. The music ranged from traditional to blues and even included a bit of rapping during a modern rendition of ‘We three Kings’. Everyone involved poured their hearts and soul into the performance. Can you Imagine Christmas was the perfect way to start the season. For more info about Quicken Trust visit www.quickentrust.com U3A Celebrate Christmas The annual Christmas party for Thetford U3A members kicked off with a murder mystery to entertain guests. John Woods took on the role of DI Naughton, investigating the murder of a local speaker at a WI meeting. The witnesses were played by U3A members who borrowed WI props from the Thetford WI ladies. Each table was a team and set about scrutinising the evidence over tea and cakes. The ever popular U3A band took to the stage to perform a number of well known Christmas songs and some of their firm favourites from their regular set. As a keen fan of murder mysteries, the Mayor was delighted to take part, “It’s nice to see all the members getting Above: Some of the U3A band members together and enjoying Christmas. I’m really happy to see how many U3A Below: Murder Mystery winners with the members there are. The U3A band is deeply involved in the Mayor, Cllr Dennis Crawford community, I just love it.” The Walkers team correctly guessed the murderer, weapon and motive. Current U3A Chair Lynn Ready said, “We’ve had a brilliant turnout this year. This is my last Christmas Party as Chair, I’ve tried to think of something different each year, and the murder mystery has been a great bit of fun. I’m really grateful to my friends at the WI for lending their kit. The music group were keen to perform again as we bought them their mics and PA system with some funding earlier in the year, and everyone enjoys seeing them perform.” The party ended with a grand raffle, each guest was given a free ticket with prizes donated by members from different groups. Speaking about the exhibition Curator Oliver Bone said, “I’m delighted to be able to bring interesting objects from the collections to illustrate the craftsmanship of making. It’s Curator Oliver Bone with objects from the Handmade Exhibition been very interesting to put these objects into the spotlight for people to enjoy.” Other highlights include a patchwork star quilt, a carved stone mortar from Thetford Priory and a sketch of the Market House, a building grand in scale, but never built – the Shambles taking its place instead. Annette is a former Theatre Sister who developed her love of textiles after studying for a City & Guilds qualification when she was 40. Annette is internationally reputated for her work, travelling to Australia, the USA, across Europe and the UK exhibiting and teaching. Dan is well known locally as Artist in Residence at Ancient House Museum, creating dioramas for several exhibitions and his work features in one of local historian David Osborne’s books and is the creator of the drawings in this column.

granny kept. I went to Gloucester College of Art & Design when I was 18, and from there into teaching.

How long have you lived in Thetford? A: We’ve lived here almost 9 years after moving from Bury St Edmunds. I think people are really friendly here, more than most of the places we’ve lived in. D: I really enjoy the walks along the river, and going to the boat for coffee and cake. You can walk anywhere in Thetford and it’s full of interesting people.

How do you express your creativity? A: I work mainly with hand or machine stitching, and creating my own fabrics to work with. I create all my own printing screens for my work, dye all my own fabrics unless I’m recycling old fabric, like the French linen I’m working with at the moment. Although I’m well known for quilting, I also teach patchwork, quilting and machine embroidery City & Guild courses through the WI. I have been the British Isle Vice President and President of the Quilters Guild and one of my biggest achievements was to help to establish the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham. We now get 28,000 visitors over the 4 days it runs. People think of quilting as little old ladies sewing hexagons, but it isn’t like that at all, quilts these days are works of art in their own right.

Have you always had a love for being creative? A: My Dad who was in the RAF, taught me to knit and sew when I was little. I can remember knitting a pair of mittens at Costessey Primary School when I was little. I made my own wedding dress, my daughter’s wedding dress and some of my friends’ wedding dresses. I’ve always knitted and I always have something on the go. D: I have always been interested in art, I still have drawings that I did when I was 3 years old and my

D: I’m an avid collector; I have an archive of ephemera that I draw on in my work. I’m a keen model maker, I love painting historical models and creating dioramas, I enjoy block printing and painting. I’ve also written and illustrated a book, It’s Mr Toby and Friends, about some of the objects in our home for our grandson Luke. I’ve also written a book about Melbury Bubb, a bear that my daughter Louise made me for my 60th birthday. How does your work reflect the community that you live in? A: I’m very inspired by the Brecks landscape. My book Sticks and Stones is about using the local environment as inspiration. There’s a real history behind Thetford, but we like the international community it has too. I also used some of Dan’s paintings and photographs in the book, which worked really well. Alongside the book we held an exhibition of both of our work at Wymondham Arts Centre. D: Although I don’t think of myself primarily as a painter, I do tend to paint the Breckland landscape. I’ve also created a series of block prints featuring cottages and landmarks in Thetford. I have twin passions of art and history, this often inspires my work.

Dan with one of his paintings of Breckland Fir

Are you involved in anything else in the town? A: I’m a trustee of Hope Church which I attend when I’m not teaching. I also run textile workshops twice a year for a small textile group that I organised in Thetford for a few years. D: I volunteer at Ancient House Museum and I’m the Friends Secretary, I also run an art group for Norfolk Recovery Partnership, formally the Matthew project. I’m also part of a music group, we play blues and rock and roll. Where can we see more of your work? A: I have two exhibitions coming up, one in April at Braintree Museum with Anglia Textiles Work, and in September at Snape Maltings with Tin Hat Textiles. D: I’ve wanted to work in a museum since I was 13, now I’m retired and get to produce work in the museum, it’s a great joy for me. I have a print on display in the Handmade Exhibition at Ancient House Museum. For more information on Annette’s work visit: www.annettemorgan.co.uk or fadedredhead1 on instagramDan has a range of cards available at Thetford’s Great Information Centre, King Street.

Annette with ‘Old Jugs and Bed Springs’ ready for exhibiting in Braintree Museum

Have you ever tried each other’s disciplines? A: We have tried to work in each other’s styles, but it’s never been successful. I’m just not good at painting, but give me a piece of cloth and a pair of scissors. My work is more abstract whereas Dan’s is more figurative. D: I do like cloth and the feel to it, old linens and red spotty hankies. We’ve only collaborated on one piece, and tend to work independently although we do comment on each other’s work.

Thetford Women’s Institute The November meeting was the Annual Meeting listening to various reports and giving us a chance to hear all we’d been up to during the year. There had been many interesting meetings with the highlight being the birthday party, a lovely summer’s evening held at Croxton Village Hall when we had “all the fun of the fair”. We’d also heard about sheepdog training, the history of The Great Hospital in Norwich, how to write a book, and hearing the amazing story of a family of five who back-packed through Europe on their summer holidays. During the year we had welcomed some new members although sadly losing some others. With some members of the Committee retiring and new nominees, there was an election and the new Committee now stands at 8 members who have since met and agreed their new roles. Lots to look forward to in 2018! Following the business part of the evening, Lorraine Scott gave a demonstration on making a quick Christmas table decoration (with particular emphasis on using some Poundland products to enhance the arrangement). Rose Peterson gave a vote of thanks. At the Christmas meeting we welcomed The Windmill Ringers who gave us a wonderful evening listening to their musical talent, with the opportunity of joining in with some well-known carols. Awards were presented during the evening to members who had gained the most points during the year. 1st prize went to Andrea Goodman and the runner up was June Dyson (incidentally mother and daughter). The competition for a pretty parcel was judged by the entertainers and the winner was Rita Aho with Barbara Youngs and Lois Yates as runners up. After some seasonal refreshments it was the chance to distribute all the secret Santa gifts, lovingly decorated by members.

Dry, Dehydrated Skin Dry dehydrated skin can be a temporary problem, one which you only experience in the winter. Dry skin is also called xerosis and it is a very common problem which affects people of all ages, even children. Scientists agree that because of a sharp decline in lipids (these are the fats that are essential for the structure and function of living cells) especially a drop in ceramides (these are one of the more important components of the lipid barrier), by the time we reach 40, our skin will almost certainly be dry and or dehydrated. Such a depressing thought I know but one that we can do something to improve!

Lionesses Quiz Success

Thetford Inner Wheel

Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses held their popular winter quiz recently, providing soup and a light hearted but challenging set of questions. The team “Silk" were the winners of the evening. In excess of £300 was raised, which will support the Lioness fundraising for a medical detection dog. Thetford Lionesses meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday at 7:30 PM 0f the month at Kings Court Earls Street, for further details please contact Dorothy on 0845-833746

Our Christmas meeting was held at the Thomas Paine Hotel where we enjoyed Christmas fayre and friendship. A new member, Muriel Hadley-Brown was warmly welcomed into the club and we hope she enjoys her membership. A collection was made for the food bank, and £100 donation was sent to 'My Wish' charity at West Suffolk Hospital. This appeal is for £500,000 to go towards a £5,500.000 appeal for a new cardiac diagnostic unit. The unit will be built alongside the cardiac suite to create a fully integrated cardiac centre that will enhance treatment for all cardiac patients, thus preventing long journeys to other hospitals.

A New Routine A New You Wondering why you find it so hard to stick to your new healthier life choices? One area to consider which may help you is to understand we all have a habitual response to stimuli. The stimuli can be an emotion or the environment/situation. See if you can relate to any of these: Stimuli Situation / Environment Birthday Pub Mornings Sad Stress

You may have a different response to these, I recommend you continue the table with as many things as you can think of. Your life to this point has consisted of these responses, which turn into habits, this then becomes your routine. When trying to change your routine focus is needed when a strong emotional experience is felt or a rare situation arises. This is when our brains go into the files of our minds and an automatic response is to go back to old habits as this has always helped/worked for us before. Next to your list write a new response you want to choose. When you have a strong desire to go back to old habits, remind yourself why that old habit is not the response you want. Ask yourself will that old habit help you reach your goals. Give yourself the option to take the old way if you want to but gently remind yourself there is an alternative response. The more often you pick the new response you truly want to have, this will then become your new habit in time an established routine and with this the New You.

A Trip of a Life Time In October I had the amazing experience of travelling to Shanghai with my school King Edward VI in Bury St Edmunds. We spent ten days in the wonderful city exploring a very different culture. The Shanghai Advance Leadership Exchange is designed to encourage students to gain leadership skills and an understanding of the Chinese culture and language through a range of challenging experiences. Shanghai is one of the largest cities in the world, home to around 24 million people. When in Shanghai we had the pleasure of exploring many incredible modern skyscrapers. The diverse infrastructure of these astonishing buildings attracts tourists from all over the world to visit this incredible city.

Zoe pictured with some of the young people she met on her trip to Shanghai

One of the unique features of the exchange was that the students control it; we were the ones who determined what we aimed to get out of it. It is a bespoke experience with every student taking something different from the experience. I learnt that being an advanced leader is not always about being at the front of the group or being the loudest, it is about taking a step back and letting others take the forefront. This is the biggest message I have taken away from this Advanced Leadership Programme. I often find myself leading a group at school; but by going to Shanghai I have realised that you can learn a lot as a leader by standing back, watching and listening to the way others interact and work within a group. My favourite part of the exchange is the home visit. This gives us a chance to get to know the students and their families, talking to them about their daily lives, eating local food and seeing how their culture differs to ours. Our daily lives are polar opposites; they live in a much more competitive society which requires them to spend many more hours working. This was an amazing experience. I made many friends and loved every minute of the trip. ZoĂŤ Pettit

During our stay we were guests of the Yangjing Juyuan Experimental School (our partnership school) for five days and worked with students on English, PE and music. I was mainly based with the PE activities where we had to adapt to changing situations. For example, we thought we were going to be working with 25 students but for one lesson we had 250, and we had to change the activity to allow everyone to join in. We had to communicate and re-plan the lesson.

The Greatest Wealth Is Health How many times have you considered or wanted change? Maybe you are unhappy in a relationship, at work, with how you look? Have you heard of the saying a problem is only a problem when viewed as a problem? Meaning what if there was the guarantee that the ‘thing’ that gets you down will be resolved? If someone could show you the steps to resolve? How would it make you feel? Would you feel more confident to take the plunge? I am currently looking into a research project on Applied Positive Psychology, why? My interest in the fact it’s not what you say to everyone else that determines your life it’s what you whisper to yourself that has the greatest power and what decides your total health and wellbeing. Change is hard at first, we often say the first step is the hardest, then it gets messy in the middle; this is where support, solutions, positive psychology and guidance comes in, then something wonderful happens; the end is gorgeous. Over the last year I have been working with individuals on health goals, those living with medical conditions wanting to improve the quality of their life, the results have been outstanding, I have been closely supporting women on self-worth/confidence issues which have impacted their relationships or prevented them from embarking in the dating scene. Recently I’ve been discussing significant work changes with a chosen few & devised information on how they felt initially, to process of change through to the excitement and happiness they now experience. I am keen to hear from anyone who is considering change. Please contact me for further information on the research project, workshops or to sign up to newsletters. Contact details below.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Post-Christmas Gardening Tasks The decorations must come down and be packed away. Hopefully you have gained an indoor plant or a bowl of bulbs to supply some interest inside and some bulbs will be showing above ground in the garden. It is amazing how daffodils resist the toughest weather. (You may come across a bag of bulbs that was overlooked in your tidying up - plant them rather than bin them as you may be lucky and get a late showing.) If you had a real Christmas tree that you are turning out, a quick visit to the Amenity Site on Mundford Road will deal with the problem before it starts losing needles everywhere. Take your secateurs with you as you go around the garden on a sunny day and you can tidy as you go. Hellebores often have dead or dying leaves that can be removed to reveal the new growth and flower buds. If you have ornamental grasses, now is the time to give them a haircut – down to a couple of inches. If it is frosty however, it would be best not to walk on the lawn as this causes damage. In the vegetable patch you can go on digging if areas still need attention but try not to compact wet soil. If you are planning to sow early peas, it is a good idea to warm the soil by putting out cloches a couple of weeks in advance. Another job that needs forward planning is forcing rhubarb. It takes about 8 weeks for shoots to develop fully under the cover of heavy pots with some straw protection. You can use buckets but they do need to be anchored down to stop them blowing away in the winter storms.

Barnham Common dusted by snow, by Kevin Gorman

If you have a pond, remember that two or three old tennis balls floating on top can help to keep ice from forming right across the surface in most winters. This will be a hard month for wild birds and it is important to keep feeders filled regularly – they are creatures of habit and do depend on humans for survival now. Throwing some peanuts in shells on the grass could bring some interesting visitors. Birds also need access to water so if you have a bird-bath it would be a kindness to remove or melt the ice on a frosty morning so that they can drink – and sometimes the birds like a bath even in January!

Best wishes for a happy and successful year of gardening in 2018! Sue Pilgrim

Food, Glorious Food Mid-winter can often be a time of struggle for our wild birds; in some years there is a bounty to be found in our hedgerows and woodlands, whilst in others the larder can be bare. This winter seems to be somewhere between the two. However, cold weather, particularly prolonged freezing conditions and snow cover, can turn all of this upside down. In these conditions birds can flood into gardens in search of food, and our familiar visitors can be joined by some rather unfamiliar ones. Our Blue and Great Tits will almost certainly rub shoulders with Coal, Marsh and Long-tailed Tits, whilst woodland finches, such as Brambling, Siskin and Redpolls, could join the House Sparrows at the feeders. At this time of the year it’s a good idea to provide a wide variety of food to accommodate the new birds on the block. Finches seem to prefer the larger seeds and sunflower hearts, and black sunflower seed will keep most of them happy. The tits will feed on these too but will also take peanuts, and in very cold weather they will feast on fat cakes. These are a particular favourite of Long-tailed Tits and now come in a variety of flavours such as berry, insect and seed.

A Long-Tailed Tit feeding. Photo by John Harding / BTO

For these types of feeders, fat cakes and apples can be put onto the table. If you are very lucky you might get a visit from a warbler or two. Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs are insectivorous birds and as such the majority of them spend the winter months in southern Europe and North Africa. However, recently more of them have forgone this hazardous journey for a winter in our gardens. This is a risky gamble; in mild winters it is one that may well pay off and provide a shorter journey home in the spring. But during particularly cold winters they may well pay with their lives. The food we put out can offer birds a lifeline when times are tough.

The smaller finches, Siskins and Redpolls, will also feed on nyger seed, a small black seed that is very For more information on feeding garden birds, visit: similar to thistle seeds that are found in the wild. Understanding Your Cat’s Behaviour If you are having problems with your cat’s behaviour, you may be interested to know that your vet can refer you to a suitably qualified cat counsellor. If your cat is insured, your sessions can be paid for by your insurance company, although you will have to pay the excess. Many cat owners may not understand the needs of their cats. Is the insistent meowing of the cat trying to communicate with you for food or affection, or something more complex? The cause of the problem can sometimes be difficult to identify. Seek help sooner rather than later, as it can be more difficult to rectify long-standing issues. Cat counsellors can help owners with many different problems, from soiling in the house, being aggressive, pulling out their own fur and many more. A friend of mine was recently referred to a behavioural therapist by her vet as one of her cats was urinating outside the litter tray. For £200, she had a 3-hour intensive visit where the lady met the cats, looked all over the house, checked the garden and where other cats in the neighbourhood live. She also took a detailed history of the cat and the problems my friend had been experiencing. The therapist left my friend with lots of recommendations and asked her to keep a diary. The therapist sent a very detailed report with her recommendations and my friend had to report back on the progress. Included in the fee there is also another visit to check on the progress in the New Year. So far, most of the recommendations have been successful and there has be no more inappropriate urinating.

Talk Is Tale Of Tailwaggers Probus member Tony Dobbin gave the final monthly talk of 2017 to his Thetford club. His choice of title for the talk was ‘Going to the Dogs’ and it swiftly became evident why. Tony traced his and his family’s relationship with dogs, greyhounds in particular, and how they had shaped and influenced their lives. Tony told his audience about his first job, working for the then leading pet food firm in Britain – Spratt’s. He designed advertising and publications and was involved in some of the first commercial television advertising in the UK. But it was another 20 years before he and his late wife, Sue, became involved in greyhounds. After rehoming a retired racer, they nursed an injured dog back to full health and he went on to achieve numerous successes on the track. It started an interest that brought them a host of trophies and victories, mainly at Wembley Stadium, but when they moved from their Hertfordshire home to Norfolk, also at tracks in the region. They repaid their dogs by making sure they came home to comfortably live out their retirement. Tony spoke about some of the highlights of greyhound racing and dogs such as Master McGrath, a three time Waterloo Cup winner, and Mick the Miller, who won the Greyhound Derby twice, then retired to stud, interestingly, in Norfolk. His concluding message was apt for this time of year: ‘Remember, a dog is not just for Christmas, but for life.’

Could 2018 Be Your Year To Join Thetford Society? Every month a piece appears in this magazine about the Thetford Society and what we have been up to, but what is the Society all about? We are a group of likeminded people who care about Thetford. We offer support to the preservation of its many ancient sites, from the Cluniac Priory through to disabled rights such as dropped kerbs and much more in between. We also have monthly meetings where we are entertained by guest speakers ranging from local dignitaries, rural estate managers, to handlers of birds of prey; an eclectic mix, but always entertaining. The committee also organise outings, which this year have included a guided tour to the secrets behind the Stanta battle area and the Christmas Spectacular at Thursford. There are also social events such as the summer BBQ, charity quiz night and Christmas buffet.

Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk, Richard Jewson, left, with Thetford Society President Stuart Wright

He has to retire from the post at the age of 75, when either his Deputy Lord Lieutenant, or one of the 36 Deputy Lieutenants should be selected to carry on this peculiarly British tradition.

Our December meeting began with a warm welcome from our Chairman, a roundup of upcoming social events and a reminder that from January the £1.00 charge for each meeting will begin. All those who were lucky enough to go to the Thursford Christmas Spectacular agreed that it was a fantastic day out, perhaps an outing that can be repeated next year. Our speaker was Richard Jewson JP who spoke to us about his role as Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Norfolk. The Queen’s personal representative was originally a military position dating from the time of Henry VIII, whose job it was to keep the tax collecting Sherriffs in line. A former businessman (Jewsons, the builder’s merchants) Richard was selected for the role 13 years ago by the Prime Minister – Tony Blair. He makes sure that any royal visits that come to the region are highly organised, although he had some amusing anecdotes where things didn’t go quite to plan! Another of his duties involves the presentation of awards such as the British Empire Medal and Queens Award for Industry.

Benefit Checker Service For Older Residents Many older people are entitled to claim benefits – but not everyone is aware of what their entitlements are, and how to claim. Age UK Norfolk is working hard to raise awareness so that those in later life, and their carers, can claim; and helping them along the way to make those claims. The awareness campaign begins in January and the charity is aiming to ensure that the people concerned will be better informed and know their rights. As part of the awareness campaign Age UK Norfolk want to make sure that older people are claiming their entitlements and are fully informed about attendance allowance, pension credit, council tax benefit etc. Where relevant, there will be support for residents to get the help and assistance they need to claim those benefits. Age UK Norfolk hopes to achieve this by offering benefit entitlement checks and free and confidential advice about home safety, housing, care issues etc. Providing this service in a place of a claimant’s choice, either in their own homes, at Age UK Norfolk’s premises, in a care home, or any other venue that is deemed suitable. To find out more about benefit checks, call the Age UK Norfolk advice line on 0300 500 1217, Monday-Friday 10am-4pm.

Rotarians Raise Christmas Charity Cash Thetford Rotary has held its annual Christmas Collection and extend their thanks to Tesco, Thetford Garden Centre and Roys for allowing us to collect on their premises, it is much appreciated. A fantastic £1205.58 was collected in total for Rotary charities and our thanks go out to the people of Thetford and the surrounding area for giving so generously. The money will be used to fund local and international good causes. Rotarian Tom Muir who organised the collections also expressed his thanks to the Rotarian collectors and friends who stood often in very cold uncomfortable conditions. The Rotary Christmas Dinner was held at the Thomas Paine Hotel with almost forty Rotarians and guests attending. If you are interested in joining in the fun and fellowship of Rotary and with the opportunity to give a little back to society, you are most welcome. TADDS Helping Hands Befriending Service On November 1st Thetford & District Dementia Support Group launched its new befriending project. TADDS have secured grant funding via the Royal Voluntary Service for one year using money provided by the “People’s Health Trust” & Health Success through The Health Lottery. TADDS Helping Hands Service will provide an important local service to help people who live with a diagnosis of dementia. The project will enable them to keep doing the things they love with the support of a volunteer. Oneto-one support makes it easier for people with dementia to cope with day to day living. Some may sometimes feel isolated, find it difficult to leave their home or who may struggle to live well, to remain active and feel part of their local community.

Jo Cooper, left, with Jo Mountjoy-Dixon at a TADDS event in the Guildhall

To request a befriender or if you think you may like to be a volunteer, please contact Jo Cooper, Befriending Co-ordinator on 07724 175827 or email: taddsbefriending@hotmail.com Visit TADDS website on: www.thetford-dementia-support-group.org

Co-ordinated by Jo Cooper, the befriending service will have dedicated volunteers to visit people in their homes. The volunteers will offer regular contact, social support and a link to other information and additional support. TADDS are continuing to work towards establishing Thetford as a Dementia Friendly Town.Training is available to local businesses who would like to support the project.

Cinnamon Trust Needs Volunteers The Cinnamon Trust is the national charity whose wonderful volunteers help people over retirement age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness by offering all kinds of pet care. We are desperately trying to find some dog walking volunteer support for an elderly resident and their two beloved elderly dogs who live in the Thetford area. What happens if illness, injury or just the fact that we all get older eventually affects our ability to look after our four legged companions? A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, feeling that their only option is to rehome them, this is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together. We’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, n Ceramic wall & floor tiling we’ll fetch the cat food, even clean out the bird cage or n Natural stone, mosiac, litter trays. Managing a Family Split

T

Here at Rudlings Wakelam all members of our family department are also members of Resolution which is the association for family lawyers and we are therefore committed to resolving family issues in a constructive way, helping you to focus on what is important in the long term and putting the best interests of your children first.

he breakdown of a marriage or relationship can be a difficult time and emotionally draining.

As solicitors we cannot take away the emotional pain but we can help by providing independent advice. The first thing to do if your marriage or relationship breaks down may be to find out where you stand and most solicitors including Rudlings Wakelam offer a stand-alone meeting at a fixed fee. Such a meeting can be wide ranging, covering your various options such as divorce or a separation agreement also what arrangements you need to make for any minor children and the various ways in which financial matters may be resolved between you.

We will use our experience to guide you through the options available to you. The Resolution (first for family law) website can be very useful to visit. This can be accessed via www.resolution.org.uk

“We cannot take away the emotional pain but we can help by providing independent advice.

An initial meeting with a solicitor can be used to discuss the possible costs of the various options available to you and to agree the next step that you need to take which may be as simple as talking to your spouse or partner or self-referring to mediation, which is a referral to an independent, usually legally trained, mediator who will help you move towards an agreement.

Once you have decided what your next step is, we can work with you to move forward for example by sending a letter to your spouse or partner or by drafting a divorce petition. No matter what you decide to do, all steps would be agreed with yourself beforehand.

In order to resolve financial issues the first step is nearly always a process whereby you and your spouse or partner exchange details of your financial means and this can be dealt with through solicitors or mediation and is also the first thing that happens if court proceedings to resolve financial issues need to be started.

At a stressful time such a meeting with a solicitor can be very important so be prepared to take a note or bring a friend or relative with you as two pairs of ears are definitely better than one.

At the initial meeting we can advise on keeping yourself safe both physically and financially during the breakup process. At all times we will listen to you and help to give you the confidence to make the right decisions for you and your family.

Celebrating Prince Frederick We are holding a very special event to celebrate the 150th birthday of our founder, Prince Frederick Duleep Singh at the museum on Saturday 20th January 2018, and we invite everyone to come and celebrate with us for FREE! Born on 23rd January 1868, Prince Frederick was the second son of the last Maharajah of the Punjab. He grew up at Elveden Hall and enjoyed the trappings of a lavish lifestyle. As he grew up he became a keen collector, historian and antiquarian, even writing a book on the subject! Come and explore with us the life of Prince Frederick, his family, Sikh culture, and the story of his generous gift of the Ancient House Museum to the people of Thetford.

crest to take home and display with pride, much like Prince Frederick did with his own. Discover Prince Frederick’s Indian connections, make traditional chapattis, and taste how good they are! We will also have tea, coffee, and biscuits for everyone to enjoy in our Great Hall. Explore and discover the museum using our new free trail, Prince Frederick’s Birthday Treasure Hunt. If you can find all the birthday treasure you win a prize. There will also be an opportunity to handle real Victorian objects and learn more about traditional Sikh clothing. Hall Of Fame Spot For Thetford Businessman Ryan A local businessman and charity director has been inducted into the LEA International Hall of Fame in Orlando, Florida, USA. Ryan Windsor, who grew up in Thetford, was recently inducted in the 20th LEA Hall of Fame for contributions to business, charity and supporting young business entrepreneurs. Ryan founded his first company, Windsor Properties, over ten years ago and holds a number of non-executive directorships for various charities including Charles Burrell Centre, Keystone Development Trust and the newly renamed homeless persons charity Emmaus Suffolk. Equipped with the experience of starting his own business, Ryan has branched out, and teamed up with different partners to grow new business ventures. Ryan’s roles include business strategy, client relations, and operations development. He co-founded and advises for Windsor Media Group – a digital marketing company, Cooper & Gracie – a cruelty -free pet care company, and Windsor & Patania – a London based architectural firm.

Ryan currently divides his time between coaching and mentoring starters in property and business, and further growing the group of companies he (co-)founded. Ryan imagines that “without the experience of local charity work I probably would have limited myself to investing in property, but since my involvement in the local community have found my passion; to help people fulfil their potential and the potential of business collaborations and partnerships.”

Ryan’s successes in property, business and charity have not gone unnoticed by the local community, and Ryan has picked up several awards during the past years. He was named ‘30 under 30’ by IQ magazine and received the Teresa Graham CBE Peoples award in 2016, and was awarded the Thetford Award for Recognising Achievement in business and the Cambridge Property ‘Rising Star’ award in 2017. Most recently Ryan thus was also inducted into the LEA International Hall of Fame in Orlando, Florida. This is Ryan’s first international award, which he received for his efforts in promoting ethical business, forming new partnerships and mentoring entrepreneurs.

Reduce Body Inflammation Inflammation is when the blood transports white blood cells to an area that needs healing and protection, thus resulting in swelling, redness and heat. Here are some top tips Reflect Health would like to advice in addressing this. Cooling: Depending on the severity and area, different methods can be used to reduce the heat. For severe swelling that has occurs from an injury for example, ice or something frozen can be applied. Be careful to protect the skin by creating a clean and sterile barrier such as a clean cloth wrapped around the cooling agent. For less severe symptoms such as skin rashes, cooling gels like Aloe Vera can be applied.

Emma Williams, left, with Dionne Wilson Reflect Health and Wellbeing - Waiting for your call to discuss your health needs

Diet: I know you hear it all the time but diet plays an important part. Include tomatoes, olive oil, leafy greens, nuts, oily fish and berries. Add turmeric and ginger to dishes to create flavour and health benefits. And of course avoid the usual toxic culprits, I am sure you know what they are ;-) For more information, visit: www.reflecthealth.co.uk or call 07788238814.

Heat: Heat can make an inflamed area worse. However, in some cases it can help sooth inflammation by relaxing the muscles. This is especially true when inflammation is causes by muscle illnesses such as arthritis or fibromyalgia. Treatments that include heat such as hot stones massage or applying hot pads to areas can help prevent flare ups and manage symptoms. However it is important that when having a flare up, these are avoided.
