Thetford River Day Links With Festival of Thetford & Punjab This year the Thetford River Day will link with the Festival of Thetford & Punjab to mark the 125th Anniversary of the death of Maharajah Duleep Singh. This is a partnership project between Essex Cultural Diversity Project (ECDP) and Thetford Town Council to deliver a cultural heritage festival which will include a wide range of activities to take place along the River Ouse. There will be a major series of events that will collectively comprise a Heritage Festival engaging many local organisations and a range of creative cultural and heritage practitioners and performers from across the Norfolk area. The festival will be a celebration and exploration of the story of Duleep Singh and his cultural legacy. This includes his family, the political and cultural context of the time in which he was living, and how this has influenced Thetford and the surrounding area today. It is also a chance to further explore the under-appreciated links between Thetford and the Punjab due to this shared heritage. This provides opportunities for audiences around Thetford/Norfolk to learn more about this story, and to get involved in a range of cultural activities during the River Festival on Saturday 21st July. Indi Sandhu, Director of Festival of Thetford & Punjab said, ‘We are keen to work with Thetford Town Council to deliver a high-quality festival with ground-breaking cross-cultural collaborations between diverse and East Anglian based artists and creative/cultural practitioners including dance, visual and performance art, literature, craft and theatre.’ A procession through the town centre will feature Bhangra and Morris dancers, Bhangra Dhol Drummers, a Punjabi food stall, Sikh martial arts Gatka, henna hand painting, and storytelling activities along the River.

From Saturday 7th July there will be a new exhibition all about Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last Sikh ruler of the Punjab who lived at Elveden Hall. The exhibition is an opportunity to see first-hand the famous Casualty of War painting by renowned Sikh artists, The Singh Twins, on loan from the National Museum Scotland until December 7th. Families are invited to special free admission event days on each Saturday during the festival. Starting with the fascinating lives of the Maharajah’s children on the 7th July. Find out what they did in the First World War, their campaigns, and the museum’s special link with the family. On the 14th July discover the extraordinary life of the Maharajah himself. Meet costumed characters and handle real historical objects from the time at both events, with activities for all the family. Throughout the festival there is the “Spot the Khanda,” a family friendly trail with an opportunity to win a small prize for just 50p. Fraser Harrison, author of Duleep Singh’s Statue, will be giving a talk exploring the many intricate aspects of the Casualty of War painting. Thetford Riverside – “On the Green” Launch Of Outdoor Events For 2018 Thetford celebrated the launch of a new outdoor venue in the centre of town recently, bringing entertainment and hospitality together in the open air. The green space directly in front of the Thetford Riverside Leisure complex, on Bridge Street, provided a perfect riverside setting to play host to several events in the launch week, whetting the appetite of locals from both the business community and residents. In the opening week, the green welcomed over 1300 local people for an evening with popular Rat Pack meets Bublé singer Gary Winter. The evening was blessed with fine weather and on the warm and dry summer’s evening families socialised and enjoyed an entertaining set with a playlist containing something for everyone.

The Grand Central Restaurant and The Light Cinema are supporting the events and are pleased the activity has given them the opportunity to showcase their businesses. Themed events are planned moving forward including film launches. George O’Connor, Manager of the cinema said “An incredibly positive start to what should be an exciting event-packed summer which I am really looking forward to”.

This month we are featuring not one but three members of our community! Sean Ready, Clare Higson and Roseanne Gough are Thetford River Group, you may have seen them out on the water looking after the River Thet and Little Ouse. How long has Thetford River Group been going? Sean: I’ve been litter picking on the river for around 4 years, but the group as it is has been going for about 18 months now. The three of us are the steering circle, we plan the different projects we want to work on, wrote the group constitution and created the organisation. How did you all get involved in looking after the river and developing a river group?
L to R: Roseanne, Sean and Clare with one of their Crooked Angel posters by the river in Thetford
Clare: I was part of the CamEO Little Ouse and Thet Partnership which is funded by Anglian water, I’m also a member of Salmon and Trout Conservation and take part in Riverfly Monitoring (a citizen science project checking the health of a river). I met Sean at a River Day and wanted to become involved. It’s also about mindfulness for me. Roseanne: I went to a restorative river meeting at The Crossing, and got involved last February. I realised that I have a connection to wildlife and natural landscapes, so I’ve enjoyed learning the conservation aspect. Sean: My mum lived by the river, so I built a boat. I noticed the rubbish on the river and thought it would be good to remove it, and leave the river a nicer place for someone else. My favourite part of the river is the little bit between Nuns Bridges and Melford Bridge.
Since you started as a group, have you been working with any organisations?
the
Clare: British Canoeing have been super helpful, we’re currently going through River Steward training. We are also involved in Operation Safe Passage along with Breckland District Council. Thetford Town Council, and Paul Norris from Bush Adventures UK. The Wild Trout Trust have done a study and the Environment Agency have done a walk through. The Scouts haven’t been able to navigate upstream towards Thetford for two years because of the fallen trees and weeds near to Two mile bottom which we hope will be cleared soon. Roseanne: It’s very difficult to paddle in the river at the moment, we want to make it more navigable for paddle-craft as it doesn’t disturb the natural environment unlike punting can.

Have you had support locally for your group?
Sean: The local Thetford community fundraised for a replacement boat when my original wore out. It was so lovely that people wanted to give and support. It was really nice to feel recognised for what I‘ve been doing when I won my TARA. Local businesses have provided new kit which has been great. Clare: Some of the Thetford Town Councillors have been very helpful especially around the Butten Island area. I’ve been astonished by the local community’s generosity, it’s been amazing really, wherever we go people know who we are and what we’re doing. Roseanne: Our facebook page has been very popular, we’ve got lots of followers. People are keen to hear about what we’re doing to look after the river. You do regular litter picks on the river, have you ever found anything interesting?
Roseanne: We recently picked a litter picker out of the river with our own litter picker, we thought that was quite ironic. Sean: I rescued a child’s missing hat once, when Shane at Hat’s Don’t Sell heard about it, he replaced it with a version. My most interesting find was a safe – although it was empty! The Police were quite interested until I told them there was a big hole in the back.
Sean, Clare and Roseanne in their boat on the river, about to undertake a litter pick
Clare: We’ve founds guns before and pulled up a toy segway and the bin from the Methodist Church. Sean: We average 80 bin bags a month, that’s approximately 300 items a week. We have been working with some of the groups who regularly congregate alongside the river, we talk to them about what we are doing and ask them not to use the river as a litter bin. We are beginning to see some success as there has been a reduction in the amount of litter left discarded along some of the river banks, especially around the Butten Island area.

The River Group’s poster to highlight the danger of feeding birds too much bread
What is your Crooked Angel project?
Roseanne: It started with Clare discovering a link on how bread isn’t good for water beds. Then we found out that for birds, bread if it’s eaten on a regular basis can cause bones to grow too big which causes early death as the birds can’t fly, they struggle to get natural foods and escape predators. Sadly there are birds on the river in Thetford with this condition. We want to help people learn about the best way to feed birds and keep the river healthy and as rat free as we can. The best way to feed the birds is by throwing the food directly onto the river, rather than along the river bank. And finally....
Clare: We really want to bring about access to the river in a safe, non costly way. It’s the most amazing natural gift for the people of Thetford because it’s free and great for mindfulness. For more information about Thetford River Group and their projects visit www.thetfordrivergroup.org Editor’s Note: Our river in Thetford is one of our best assets. Thank-you to Sean, Clare and Roseanne for keeping it clean for us all to enjoy.

Feeling Inspired By Open Gardens? Open Gardens always provides us with ideas for changes and improvements. It is particularly noticeable how a well-kept lawn sets off the plants and shrubs around it so consider a dose of summer feed to perk up your grass, especially if you missed a spring feed. The weather this year has contributed to giving us vigorous growth. More than most years, it is necessary to thin out plants growing too close, stake any plants in need of support. Once plants like perennial geraniums have flowered a good trim will encourage them to bloom again so an evening saunter round the garden with snips in hand is a good plan. We actually have peaches this year because of the kind conditions and I am looking out some netting to protect the precious fruit from the birds and wasps. In the days of great houses with dozens of gardeners, they used to tie a cloth bag round each fruit and I might even go that far to make sure we get something to eat! Apples and pears have set well and the trees have shed some excess fruit with the “June drop”. Now you need to thin out the crop so that the tree can give you a reasonable quantity and quality. If you have trained apples or pears you should also give them their summer prune now. On the vegetable patch, you will be seeing the first flowers on courgettes and runner beans. The courgettes produce male flowers first so no fruits will start forming initially; you can pick the bright blooms to stuff and eat, though this is quite fiddly. I have noticed that the first runner bean flowers do not set either but cannot explain this. Anyway, once they start forming, the beans come fast and you must keep up an almost daily routine of picking. If you pick them young, the plant goes on flowering and setting new pods. While you’re at it, pull out the flowering head of any rhubarb; you may not want to eat the leaf stalks now but you want the strength of the plant to go back into the root for next year.

Turtle Dove – Sound Of The Summer? As a young birdwatcher I knew that summer was well and truly here when I heard the soft purring song of the Turtle Dove but it is a sound that is getting much harder to hear; 2017 was the first year in almost 45 years of watching birds that I failed to see a Turtle Dove. During the last twenty-five years we have lost 95% of our breeding Turtle Doves, with changing agricultural practice often being cited as one of the main causes of this decline. There are likely to be other drivers too, hunting around the Mediterranean, where Turtle Dove is a target species will be adding to the pressure this delightful dove is under. East Anglia has long been a stronghold for Turtle Doves, and probably still is even though they have become much more difficult to find, and, even though their number has been much reduced it is still possible with some effort to see Turtle Dove in Thetford Forest. Turtle Dove is our only long-distance migrant dove, spending the summer here and the winter in West Africa, as far as we know. During the summer of 2014 scientists fitted a Turtle Dove with a satellite tag in a bid to find out where our Turtle Doves spend the winter months. Titan, as he was named, flew from Suffolk, over the Atlas Mountains in Morocco and across the mighty Sahara before reaching his final destination in Mali, a staggering 11,200km from his Suffolk breeding site, where he returned to the following spring. The Turtle Dove is a close relative of the more familiar Collared Dove but differs in being slightly smaller, having a small patch of bare red skin around the eye and a ‘tortoiseshell’ patterned back. Its voice is very different too. Collared dove utters a three note ‘Ooh ooh-ooh’ call, whilst the soft purring song of the Turtle Dove resembles that of a very loud, very happy cat. The flight of the Turtle Dove is also faster and more direct
Turtle Dove by Mike Weston/BTO
than that of the Collared Dove, with the wing beats appearing much more ‘flicky’. If you want to see a Turtle Dove, walking the rides of Thetford Forest and checking out any of the clearings that you come across may well be the best bet, but you will also need a good dose of luck as this once fairly common bird has now joined the ranks of the rare. The BTO website contains a video that helps identify Turtle Dove from Collared Dove, it can be viewed here www.bto.org/about-birds/bird-id/668 About Thetford ad June 2018.pdf 1 25/05/2018 10:14:53

News From TADDS Thetford & District Dementia Support Group (TADDS) ended May on a high note with some donations being presented to us. Thetford Players generously gave £1,000 and we also had a visit from a previous member of the the 41 Club in Thetford who gave us a cheque following the winding up of their group. We are all very grateful for the donations and on behalf of TADDS would like to thank everyone for their generosity. At TADDS group we also support Carers as well as people living with a dementia. In June TADDS had a visit from our local Admiral Nurse. An Admiral Nurse is a specialist dementia nurse. When things get challenging or difficult, Admiral Nurses work alongside people with dementia, and their families: giving them one-to-one support, expert guidance and practical solutions. TADDS offers a Carers Corner on the first Friday of every month and the Admiral Nurse is a frequent visitor to these group sessions. On July 11th and August 15th, TADDS is also offering two separate half day Carers workshops, to give further information and insight into the different dementia’s and how to help someone living with a dementia. If you are a Carer and would like to know more about joining one of these FREE half day workshops, please contact us either through our Web Page or by emailing; taddsgroup@hotmail.com TADDS also offers a befriending service to people caring for someone with a dementia. Befrienders can visit once a fortnight or once a month or on a adhoc basis, All our befriends are DBS checked and have had training in how to support someone with a dementia. If you feel you would benefit from this service or if you would like to volunteer to be a befriender, please contact Jo Cooper - Befriending Co-ordinator on 07724 175827

Stanta Trip For U3A 33 Members of the ‘Industrial Tourism Group’ enjoyed a coach trip to West Tofts Army training Centre. This site has no public access but tours can be arranged. We were met by WL2 Smith who as we toured around, gave us excellent accounts of the history. We stopped at the beautiful ancient West Tofts Church and were allowed to take photographs. Stanta is used for training with six ranges, two of which have live ranges which attack simulated houses. Areas have been built to represent troubled areas to give soldiers an idea of the terrain they will be facing. The buildings of the Afghanistan village were created by taking aerial photography. 10% of the ground is dedicated to allow the stone curlews to breed. We were also shown an area where a few years ago Dads Army filmed a cricket match. There are 16,000 sheep on site & during March/April shooting stops to allow lambs to be born. Paul our coach driver had to perform some difficult manoeuvers of his own as the camp were preparing for a weekend of training. Barriers had been erected leaving a very small area for the coach to pass through. Paul passed with flying colours. The scenery around camp was stunning wildlife in abundance. A very enjoyable and educational trip.

Leaping Hare Leads Way In Boosting Town’s Tourism Thetford is too often underrated as a tourist town, but the truth is it boasts a combination of history heritage and attractions that are a match for anywhere else in Britain. This was Corinne Fulford’s message in her talk to Probus members at their June monthly meeting. As a Director of Leaping Hare in King Street, she explained how it had developed to offer a box office and ticket booking service for events and coach services besides being the town’s tourist information centre. She also spoke about the challenges of funding and of how volunteers play an important role in maintaining this service which is so important in helping to grow valuable tourism for the town. Quoting one of the comments regularly made by visitors, “We didn’t realize how much is going on in Thetford or how much there is to see and do.” She pointed to the Ancient House and Dad’s Army Museums as two of the key attractions that, along with many other hidden treasures, and the unique connection with important figures of the past such as Thomas Paine and Duleep Singh, provide the town with a huge opportunity to boost visitor numbers and spending in the future. Miss Fulford also highlighted the exciting events that add even more vibrancy, fascination and interest not just for those that live in the area, but for the thousands of visitors who come to the town every year.
Members of Thetford Probus with Corinne Fulford of Leaping Hare
During the meeting, Chairman Nigel King reported the sad death of member Bob Emberton, who was a wellknown businessman in the town and the meeting duly paid respect with a minute silence. The chairman also presented a scroll to long-serving member Dan Jeffrey marking his honorary membership of the club. He joins Mike Lewis, who was recently made an honorary member, Mike Kew and Geoffrey Hancock. Peter Benton, who recently became deputy chair of Thetford U3A was introduced as a (probationary?) new member. The Club’s monthly activities included a tour of RAF Mildenhall followed by lunch at the Riverside Hotel.
With a line-up of top entertainment, July’s Festival of Thetford & Punjab, linking the festivities with the 125th anniversary of Maharaja Duleep Singh’s death, promises to be a big draw for the town. From everything the speaker said, Probus members appreciated more than why the town proudly12/09/2013 proclaims ‘Thetford’s MCPever Editorial:TEMPLATE 08:13 Page 1 Great’.

Are Your Feet Summer Ready? At this time of year we are all happy to see some sunshine and take advantage of the warmer weather to get our summer shoes out. This can often result in problems manifesting with your feet, such as dry, cracked heels and skin and corns on your toes. Dry skin is often a result of not having enough moisture in the skin and often due to the busyness of life we don't take the time to ensure you apply plenty of moisturiser after we have had our bath or shower. Corns can manifest due to a change of foot wear and pressure being applied to various toes. Corns when left untreated can become extremely sore. Regular attention with a foot file when getting showered in the morning can help to keep the skin on the heels in check and stop it getting so dry that it splits and becomes acutely painful.
Husband and wife team Jo and Malcolm Ormrod are the owners of M & J Feet & Health Practice, an established Foot Care and Health & Wellbeing business based in the centre of the town, and would be happy to see you for all your foot or wellbeing problems. The Planes By Dr Rob Alliott For those who have lived in Thetford for any length of time, the Guest Speaker for the June meeting of Thetford Society will have been a familiar figure in the town as a local GP - Dr Rob Alliott. In June 1974 he became a partner in the Thetford practice and worked from the Red Cross Building on the corner of Cage Lane and Guildhall Street (now a solicitors). In 1985 Grove Lane surgery was built on an old lime pit and in the same year his family moved into the Planes. A great deal of renovation took place to bring the house up to modern standards, including the removal of the old lead gas pipes for the lights, which were still live! Built on the edge of the river with Button Island within its grounds, the grand house was constructed around a single atrium with a cupola providing light from the top. The Planes’ first owner was William Pechey a merchant who worked for James Fison in 1881 and went on to be Mayor of Thetford on six occasions. George Lambert was another owner who became Mayor three times - The Planes is obviously the place to be – future Mayors take note! During WW2 the Air Raid Precautions (ARP) were allowed to stable horses there and free entry to the garden for afternoon tea was offered by the owner to anyone in military uniform. ‘The Planes’ are named after the London Plane trees in the grounds, one of which is 98 feet in circumference and is considered to be the 3rd largest in the country. Our Next Event: At 7.15pm on Tuesday 3rd July 2018 at the United Reformed Church on Earl Street, Dr Nick Ashton will guide us through early humans from Happisburgh to Grimes Graves. New members are very welcome, we look forward to meeting you. In August we have Phyllidia Scrivens talking to us about Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich, on August 7th from 7.30pm.

Out and About Thetford
Euston Rural Pastimes Draws In The Crowds The glorious sunshine
drew out the crowds to the 28th Rural Pastimes Event at Euston Hall. From mini Shetland carriage driving, traction engines, falconry, ferrets, to the flower festival and numerous trade stands, visitors were treated to a day to remember. Boys toys were in abundance with vintage cars, motorcycles and tractors galore. Slightly more unusual was the Coracle Regatta on the Blackborne just in front of Euston Hall Burrell traction engines at Euston Rural Pastimes itself. Entertainment in the skies came from the Wild Cat display team and a flyover featuring a Spitfire and Lancaster Bomber. Visitor Sharon Bridgeman said, “We’ve been several times, it’s a lovely day out. There’s something for everyone.” Over in the Churchyard, the homemade cakes proved an irresistible draw for many visitors to the flower festival. Another popular attraction was the hunt dogs, especially the packs from Easton Harriers and Stow Valley Beagles. Nick Dodson from Stour Valley Beagles explained “We lay a trail with a smelly sock full of strong scented stuff and have the ultimate dog walk. We’re a foot pack. A walking hunt and you don’t need any special equipment, just a good pair of wellies.” Rural crafts have gained in popularity over the recent years, several forges and wood turners were busy demonstrating their skills and selling beautiful crafted goods. All proceeds from the event are split between St Nicholas Hospice and local churches. Birthday Celebrations For Thetford WI The ladies of Thetford WI enjoyed a wartime themed evening to celebrate the group’s 72nd birthday. A visit to the Dads Army Museum started the evening. Jessie Harding, aged 93 spotted herself in a photo on display, “I was one of 4 full time female fire fighters during WW2, we had a four woman pump. There were other girls who worked with me but they were part time.” Following the museum visit the group headed to the Methodist Church Hall for a 1940s celebration supper in the style of a street party. The ladies enjoyed a selection of spam, corned beef or egg sandwiches, jelly with condensed milk and cakes. “There were masses of cake despite the rations!” joked Tricia Harrison after the supper was finished. Many of the ladies reminisced about their lives during WW2, “We never had a milk ration as we lived on a dairy farm” one of the ladies told Karen. Fellow guest Wendy Serjeant then played a selection of wartime songs on the piano whilst the group sang along to old favourites such as Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major, We’ll Meet Again and The White Cliffs of Dover. Vivian Jack explained, “I chose the theme as we were booked in to visit the museum and many of the ladies were alive during the war, some helped the war effort and others were at school.” At the end of the evening Rose presented Wendy with flowers as a gesture of thanks and a birthday card for Jessie. Heating Services ‘Sunbeams’ - By Tim Bridge
There was an eclectic selection of photographs taken by our members under the subject heading of “Hockwold Country Fairs of the Past” and “Norfolk Countryside”. This year we, as we have done in the past, invited guests to select their favourite photograph but also encouraged people to take part in a Prize Draw for £1. At the end of the afternoon the winning ticket drawn entitled the owner to select the print of their choice to take home. The Public Vote resulted in a tie with 17 votes each for Liz Blake, with her print ‘Happisburgh Sunrise’ and Tim Bridge with his print of ‘Sunbeams’ and the Prize Draw was won by N. Ross from Hockwold and the print selected Tim Bridge’s ‘Returning to Nature’. Taking stands at local Fairs is a chance for members of the public to talk to us about the Club and what we get up to between September and May! Brandon & District Photographic Club is not all about Competitions and pitting one member against the other in a bid to win that all elusive (to some!) 1st Place, it’s about learning about photography and the skills involved in taking that outstanding shot. We hold several Workshops and Tuition Evenings throughout the year looking at Portraiture, Macro Photography, Mono Photography and Action Shots to name but a few and encourage our members to stretch and improve their skills. We are also taking a stand at Weeting Steam Fair on 21st and 22nd July, so please, while you are there come in to meet us and look at the photographs on show. We will be asking visitors to the stand to select their favourite picture as well as holding another Prize Draw, so for the cost of £1 you too could take home a picture of your choice. There will be plenty of members there to assist you and answer any questions you may have about the Club and about Photography. Denise Whiting

With the help of Harry Potter, Roald Dahl and others, we shall be targeting to groups within the age-range so that young and older, beginners as well as experienced singers will find plenty to enjoy big choruses, dramatic story songs, ghostly chants and murmurs, action and singing in parts. All building up to a spell-binding concert performance. The workshops take place in Thetford Grammar School. Sponsored by the Chivers Trust, Cynthia Della Hoy’s Croxton Charity, Thetford Town Council and Norfolk CC Arts Project Fund, fees remain: £10 for the Main Course (£5 for a single day) and £3 for Toddlers Hour and the Harmony Session. Supervision is provided by an experienced DBS validated team over two friendly days of great music making.
Mayoral Visit For Disabled Sporting Event The annual ‘experience day’ for disabled children run by the President’s Sporting Club and Essex Disabled Sports Foundation took place recently at Thetford Leisure Centre. Celebrities including Sir Trevor Booking, Bob Champion and Frank Bruno joined with Mayor of Thetford Councillor Roy Brame to take part in the activities with the more than 300 children.
Councillor Brame said; “This event has been one of the highlights of our year so far. The Mayoress, Karen, and myself were delighted to have been invited. The smiles and achievements of these children will be a marvellous memory. We must also thank the volunteers and coaches who give up their time to make these things happen. Thanks to all for a day we will not forget”.

Which Is Best? Venus Freeze or CACI? I have a lot of clients asking me what is a Venus Freeze and can they benefit from having a treatment, or is a CACI better? The answer is they are both very different types of treatments working with completely different methods. Both are designed to achieve great results. But as with all things some clients prefer one to the other. CACI (which stands for computer aided cosmetology instrument) works by using micro currents and re-educates the muscles to stay in a fixed place, we are fighting gravity! It will reduce the appearance of fine lines and enchance tissue repair. It’s mainly used on the face but can also be used on the body. Treatments take 75 minutes and the client needs a minimum of 2-3 weekly sessions with a total of 8-12. This treatment is very safe and comfortable and relaxing, it was first designed for use on Bell’s Palsy and stroke patients. The Venus Freeze is a device used to treat wrinkles, rhytides (wrinkles around delicate areas), tighten skin, reduce cellulite and circumferential fat. It is a non invasive treatment using Radio Frequency and Pulsed electro magnetic fields to treat all of your concerns simultaneously. Most clients receive 6-8 treatments per area with each session lasting only 30 -45 mins approx. Reduction in fine lines, increased elasticity and the skin will appear tighter. The long term effects will be cellulite reduction, inch loss and overall improvement of the appearance of the skin. The treatment is very safe, radio frequency and magnetic pulse have been used in medicine for many years and are proven safe and effective technologies. The treatment is very comfortable, relaxing warm and pain free. There is absolutely no down time, and it produces long term results. They are both beneficial treatments and lots of my clients will have a blend of the two for their maintenance appointment to get maximum results. Breast Feeding Awareness Week 1st - 7th August World Breastfeeding Week is soon upon us. It aims to highlight the huge benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both the health of the baby and mum.
Suffer with back pain? The Shell Stretch is an excellent way to relax and stretch the back. In this exercise, you are sitting on your heels with your legs bent underneath you. Your body should be bent forward over your legs with your forehead resting on the floor or a block. Your arms can be extended in front of you or on the floor. All you have to do is take deep breaths in this position and relax. Let us know how you get on.
Sadly, Norfolk has one of the lowest percentages of breast feeding mothers at 8 weeks post birth. Thetford falls even lower than the Norfolk average. Jasmine Foster (Positive Breast Feeding Advocate) supports many local mums through the Thetford Online Breastfeeding Support Group). She has teamed up with Michelle Jermy (Women’s Health & Exercise Specialist) and Jade O’Reily (previously Family Support Worker) to invite you to an event taking place here in Thetford Thursday 2nd August. The three ladies have very different backgrounds but one similarity; they are currently breast feeding. Each able to share their experience, knowledge & support. In recent years there have been campaigns against ‘Breast is Best’ and many health professionals do not enforce the benefits as pressure to not discriminate and be inclusive of the mother’s choice. There are many reasons some mothers may not choose or can’t breastfeed. Breast feeding awareness week is not a showcase of how amazing we are; all mums are amazing! It is to inspire and support anyone thinking of breast feeding, it is to normalise breast feeding, it is to increase numbers so mothers have the opportunity to experience the bond breast feeding can provide. It is to let anyone thinking of breast feeding know there are other mums that are willing to support you; listen to experiences and you soon realise though for many the early days are not the blissful experience you often think breast feeding should be, it comes with obstacles to overcome but the view from the other side is beyond rewarding. We will be inviting breast feeding mothers to send us their photos of them feeding in various locations locally. On Thursday 2nd August we will be holding an information event. There will be the opportunity to talk to other breast feeding mums, speak to health professionals regarding any concerns you have and be able to gather lots of information on local classes, groups and support available.
Breastfeeding Information Event Thursday 2nd August 2018, 1 - 3pm at The Core Studio, Charles Burrell Centre, Staniforth Road, Thetford, IP24 3LH

Keeping Your Cat In Good Health Cats commonly suffer with disorders of the teeth, the jaw and soft tissues of the mouth. Owners may not notice their cat is in pain because they hide signs of discomfort so well and may continue eating and drinking normally. Following treatment for teeth or oral problems, cats usually appear to be much happier and livelier so it is clear that oral health problems can be a significant source of pain and suffering for our feline friends. Maintaining good oral health is likely to extend and improve the quality of your cat's life. Your vet will often examine your cat's mouth at his annual check-up, around the time of booster vaccinations. Signs of oral health issues include: Reduced grooming activity, leading to poor coat condition, Bad breath, Drooling, Discomfort when eating, Pawing at the mouth, Bleeding gums and Reduced appetite or weight loss. All these symptoms will warrant a trip to the vet. Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums and if allowed to progress it can lead to the gums receding and loss of teeth. It occurs due to bacterial plaque in the mouth and is usually found where the gum meets the tooth. Dependent on the extent and cause of gingivitis, treatment may include antibiotic and/or antiinflammatory treatment, dental treatment under general anaesthetic and home-care management. A good diet, dental hygiene and routine dental treatment helps to prevent or control gingivitis. Left untreated it can progress to peridontal disease.
by bacteria or plaque in the mouth. Plaque is always present in the cat's mouth and can become excessive or cause disease for a number of reasons such as reduced natural cleaning of the teeth (due to poor positioning of the teeth), tooth loss or dietary factors. Increased inflammation of the gums is another cause and can be due to trauma, hair impaction, or other disease. Reduced natural body defences due to inherited defects of the immune system or influences such as kidney or liver disease, diabetes or viral infection can also contribute. Peridontal disease refers to inflammation and weakening of the tissues which surround and support the teeth, including the gums, the peridontal ligament securing the teeth in place, and the jaw itself. Inner Wheel Celebrates Succesful Year
Dinner Date Raises Charity Funds
The Inner Wheel Club of Thetford held its Annual General Meeting at the beginning of June. The club heard that over the year members had raised well over £1,000. Donations were made to Blood Bikers, Shelter Box, My Wish Charity at the West Suffolk Hospital for their Every Heart matters appeal, EACH, CHICKS and Reach - a charity which helps children born with a missing part of a limb.
Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses gathered at the home of Lioness Lesley for a fund raising evening. A light supper followed by a canine quiz and surprise parcels was enjoyed by all. A total of £170 was raised which will go towards the Lioness’s charity ‘Medical Detection Dogs’.
The Club had raised this money in a variety of ways including a Coffee Morning a Beetle Drive and a St George’s Day Lunch with Thetford Rotary. Members had also been entertained by various speakers over the year covering topics including Norwich Castle Museum. The club has also sponsored a local girl who is going to the World Scout Jamboree next year. At the end of the evening President Jackie Clark handed over the chain of office to Jenny Childerhouse. This will be the 60th Thetford Inner Wheel year so plans are in hand for a special dinner to celebrate. Jenny presented Jackie with a beautiful Lavender plant for her garden in appreciation of the hard work she had put in over the year.

A level students Lucy and Avek showcased their work which featured photography, short films and films and graphics. In September Avek is going to West Suffolk College to undertake a Foundation Degree in Art and Design. He told Karen; “I’m really interested in graphics, and I did feel that my graphics work was stronger than my photography. By mixing it up I’ve created some really strong work for my Unexpected Perspective project involving shape. I feel that shapes are easy to manipulate to create strong images”.
Lucy created two short films for her final piece highlighting her interest in social stereotypes and politics. “I’m really pleased with how things went; I joined the course halfway through year 12. Last year I did some work experience at national Geographic Kids and had an image of Big Ben published which was great. I really enjoy photography, my sisters feature in a lot of my work but I also took a lot of images when I went to Japan. I’m looking forward to studying photography at Uni.” Lucy will be going to Falmouth University to study Press and Editorial Photography. Make Music Day
Father’s Day Treat At Raleigh School
Thetford Music Project celebrated Make Music Day UK with an invitation to the local community to join them for some live music and the opportunity to try a variety of musical instruments.
Raleigh Infant School and Nursery hosted "Donuts for Dads" for Father’s Day recently. The children were able to invite dads, uncles or granddads to come and celebrate Father’s Day with them in their classrooms. They were treated to donuts and a drink as well as a healthy competition, a quiz which the children also joined in with. The children had also worked hard to make beautiful cards and poems for their dads.
Now in its 17th year, Thetford Music Project offers affordable after school music lessons for young people aged 6 – 17 years at Thetford Academy. Proud family and friends enjoyed the sunshine and showcase outside the front of Thetford Academy. Speaking about the event TMP organiser Ann Smith explained, “We wanted to join in with this national event and highlight the musical talent we have in Thetford. It’s also about having a go and finding out what we at TMP can offer.” Louise, parent of one member continued, “TMP has offered Elliott musical opportunities that he wouldn’t have had in his own school. It’s been great value. His tutor put him in touch with South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band and organised a band day at RAF Honnington where he’s now a band member.”

Thetford – At The Heart Of East Anglia If anyone should ever question why relocate your business to Thetford the simple answer is “why not?” – our town has been a central industrial hub for centuries and aside from being the natural gateway to Norfolk it is also perfectly positioned for easy access to all the major motorways, ferry ports and airports. Surrounded by thousands of acres of forest, employers and employees of local companies have the benefit of living and working in the middle of an area of outstanding beauty. Keen to push out the message that Thetford is “open for business”, the Thetford Business Forum launched a film recently; the premiere being held at The Light Cinema, Thetford Riverside. The film stars many local business people including owners, managers and employees. This film will be used to promote Thetford on the worldwide web as well as closer to home to encourage businesses looking to relocate to consider settling in or around the town. This is all part of the business forum’s strategy to raise the profile of the town and attract investment to make the place a better place to live and work for all.

Benefits of Leg Endurance Training! Our legs are our main engines and in our exercise routines, it’s vital we use them for a full beneficiary effect! Without training the legs your overall body power and strength will never surpass what you’re physically capable of. Because the legs have such big muscle groups within them, when we train them the body naturally produces testosterone which helps us recover and build. Although men naturally produce more testosterone, females do produce it and the use of testosterone has very good benefits for building and repair in both sexes. What are good exercises to help strengthen and build? Deadlifts – An all-round wonder exercise! Although primarily you’ll work your legs, deadlifts work the whole body and promote all round strength. Squats – Absolutely brilliant for the lower part of your body. When squatting you’ll increase your core strength. Explosive Jumps – Doing exercises such as squat jumps, lunge jumps, box jumps and floor to sky jumps only require body weight but are so effective. Introducing explosive movements to workouts can take your muscular endurance to the next level.
Castle Hill steps - providing a great exercise location for many
building leg strength. It’s always better to do it with other people! For any other training facts, tips or class enquiries, please email: richard@tigerfitnessclub.co.uk
Lunges – Lunges are so varied and not only encourage ankle, knee and core stability, they also help our balance and posture. There’s a handful of ways to complete the lunge and for me it’s a personal favourite. (Especially if you want to feel it in your glutes!) Recently, my members and I have been visiting Castle Hill steps. Although an eye sore for some, they have proven to be the ideal exercise location for building stamina, endurance and contributing in steady weight loss. We’re normally there for 45 minutes and I’d encourage you to come along if you’re interested in

Parkrunner Of The Month - July Meet Geoffrey Herschell - known to most as Geoff. He’s our July 2018 Parkrunner Of The Month! Geoffrey has been part of Thetford parkrun since its inaugural event in February 2013. Geoffrey, 52, saw an article in the Thetford and Brandon Times about parkrun and decided to give it a go completing his first event in 32 minutes and 15 seconds. Geoffrey has since completed 40 parkruns with 34 minutes being his slowest time to complete the 5k distance and 25 minutes and 42 seconds being his personal best time. Geoffrey has given up the majority of running, instead supporting the popular event as a volunteer. Geoffrey becomes only the 2nd person to complete 100 or more volunteers at the event on the 30th June. Geoffrey has marshalled once and completed the event as a tail walker 3 times. On the 30th June Geoffrey will complete his 100th time as Parkrun photographer. So how many photographs has Geoffrey taken? It is believed to be over 35,000 photographs! Geoffrey has shared 24,159 photographs on the Parkrun Flickr photograph page. Many photographs have now been shared in the weekly edition of the Eastern Daily Press parkurn feature. Geoffrey said he started to take photos at parkrun to give people a visual memory of them running. Geoffrey said he ran hundreds of races and only had half a dozen photos, but wished he had more. In Geoffrey's younger days, he was a runner. 10k was his favourite distance, regularly finishing in around 31 minutes. Geoffrey has also completed a half marathon in under 1hr 20 minutes and completed 6 marathons. The first marathon was completed in 5 sub 3hrs 30. Geoffrey has also represented RAF Honington, RAF Bruggen and RAF Brize Norton at various distances cross-country, track and road up to marathon.
