RAF Honington Given Freedom of Thetford The Market Place was packed as people came together to witness RAF Honington awarded the Freedom of Thetford by the town’s Mayor. The sun shone and enthralled children delighted in the pomp and ceremony that accompanied the presentation. As a privilege granted within the Freedom, a parade of 120 service personnel from RAF Honington marched with drums beating, colours flying, and bayonets fixed after the Deed was handed over on Sunday 9th June.

The Freedom of Thetford is presented by the Mayor, Cllr Brenda Canham to Station Commander Group Captain Matthew Radnall at the marketplace

RAF Honington is home to the RAF Force Protection and the RAF Regt, and is only 6 miles outside the town. Joining the RAF Regt by the side of the parade ground were the Standards of Thetford Branch British Legion and Thetford 1109 Air Cadets. Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Brenda Canham welcomed everyone and said, “It gives me the greatest pleasure to award the freedom of the town to RAF Honington. When I moved to Thetford in 1979 it was the first time I had seen members of the Armed Forces.” She added, “When I became a Councillor in 2011, I became far more aware of the Stations near to Thetford.” The Mayor spoke of the many occasions when RAF Honington has supported the local community, namely the Poppy Appeal, the Beacon of Light ceremony held last year for Remembrance, and the great work of the Trainee Gunners with the River Restoration project and the Nature Reserve of Nunnery Lakes. Station Commander Group Captain Matthew Radnall resonded by saying that receiving the Freedom Of Thetford was a symbol of the special relationship in the country between the military and civilian sectors. “Many serving and former serving personnel have chosen to make Thetford their home. Though we are

from separate communities in the local area, we are from the same society, nationally and locally. Those on parade today are drawn from all walks of life, from all corners of the nation. We therefore represent and reflect that society.” The displays in the Argos car park included the RAF Heritage Centre. Retired RAF Regt Serviceman Bryan Thorpe who volunteers at the centre explained, “We’re here to promote the Heritage Centre in conjunction with the parade. We are open to the public and get lots of visits from groups. As we’re on camp visitors have to book at least a week in advance, we just want to keep our heritage alive.” For more info on the Heritage Centre visit: www.rafregimentheritagecentre.org.uk The deadline for receipt of articles for the August edition of About Thetford is the 15th July. Festival Of Norfolk And Punjab Launch June 15th saw the launch of the Festival of Norfolk and Punjab. This festival has developed from last year’s Festival of Thetford and Punjab and is now being rolled out across Norfolk as a whole. The Festival aims to explore the legacy of the Duleep Singh family who lived in the county for a period covering almost 100 years. Led by The Essex Cultural Diversity Project in conjunction with Arts Council England, National Lottery Heritage Fund, Norfolk Museum Service, Norfolk County Council and Breckland District Council the festival runs until August 3rd. The launch began with the opening of a new exhibition in the Ancient House Museum focusing on Princess Sophia Duleep Singh. Kicking off the events was author and journalist Sathnam Sanghera who recently presented the documentary, The Massacre That Shook The Empire on Channel 4. In Conversation with Santham Sanghera was held at Thetford Library with Sikh Historian and author Peter Bance, questioning Sathnam on his thoughts about the documentary.

Peter Bance (L) discussing the documentary ‘The Massacre The Empire’ with Sathnam Sangera

Talking about the Festival of Norfolk and Punjab at the end of his event Sathnam said, “It’s a brilliant event, helping to raise awareness of what Britain has done in the past, showing the development since then, and offering a chance to educate people on what schools do not. Having started in Thetford last year, to develop the festival for the whole of Norfolk is an impressive and respectable achievement and can only be seen as advantageous for the county. Discovering not only the Punjab link to Thetford but British history as a whole.”

When Spencer Met Sathnam

Before the event our student reporter, Spencer Hornsby was able to interview Sathnam. The discussion ranged from routes in to journalism to the history of the

empire, particularly the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. The Massacre took place on 13th April 1919. Santham spoke about being aware of the event but hadn’t considered researching the massacre until he grew older, finding a greater interest in history. On the Empire and its importance, Sathnam said that it was “as much British history as it is Punjabi”. He followed on, “Britain finds national identity too uncomfortable to talk about and there is a lack of acknowledgment and teaching in schools.” Sathnam explained that bringing it into the curriculum would be beneficial as the subject addresses the way we live today. “It explains a lot, our wealth, explains why there are so many Britons around the world, why we travel so much, explains why we are a multicultural society - it’s the reason I’m here, it explains our need to get involved in every crisis in the world, we’re a tiny country, why are we getting involved? It’s because of Empire.” For more information about Festival events or to book tickets please visit: www.leapinghare.org

Community Fun For Residents Staff at Randale Care celebrated National Dementia week by creating a week of activities for residents at Redgate House and Red House Care Home. When Karen popped in members of the Thetford Salvation Army were holding a sing-along musical. Favourites such as ‘Bring Me Sunshine’ and ‘Summer Holiday’ had everyone tapping their toes and joining in with tambourines, maracas and bells. Captain Diane Dickerson led the session and explained that members from Thetford Corps had recently attended dementia awareness training and had developed a dementia friendly singing group using Salvation Army resources. Diane said it was the perfect opportunity to use their new befriending skills at Redgate House. Business Manager Sue Baker explained, “We’re trying to involve the community as much as possible this week. Thetford Academy Health and Social Care students are coming to do a session, we have a trumpeter and of course our young visitors from Norwich Road Academy coming in.” The multi-generational sessions are always very popular with the residents. “It was really lovely chatting to them, they were really interested in hearing about my life, past and family,” remarked one of the residents, Gill. The annual Summer Fete at Redgate House is on Saturday 20th July, everyone is welcome. Artist’s Creative Workshop Success Participants were greeted

by a dazzling array of colour when they arrived at Thetford Library for the Silver Social Mosaic workshop. Led by artist Maggie Campbell, the group each created a tile using vivid glass tiles. Gladys Kennedy said she really enjoyed the workshop and was looking forward to the second session in July, “It’s amazing that all this stuff is here and it’s nice to have something to do. I’ve never made a mosaic before, so Participants with their mosaic tiles created with artist I’ve learnt something new. I hope they Maggie Campbell at Thetford Library continue to put on these activities.” The Silver Social is a project run by Breckland District Council delivering a programme of daytime events aimed at older people in community venues across the district. Locality Officer (Engagement) Stevie Spencer said she was delighted with the turn out, “This is the first in a series of craft based workshops and it’s been great to see people enjoying making their mosaics. To have an artist of Maggie’s calibre delivering session for the community is wonderful.” Denise Jones said she had enjoyed working with Maggie and working with good quality materials, “Whatever your limits were you didn’t feel out of your comfort zone thanks to Maggie’s help.” For more information about Silver Social events visit: www.thesilversocial.com

Prayer Pilgrimage Visits Thetford

The Bishop of Lynn, The Rt Revd. Jonathan Meyrick visited Thetford as part of the Deanery Pray Pilgrimage. The Bishop of Thetford and Bishop Jonathan decided rather than carrying out their pilgrimages in their own Deanery, they would swap with each other so they could engage with each other’s communities. The Bishop started his visit at Thetford Train Station and followed onto Bishops CE Primary Academy where he had a Q&A session with a Year 4 class. One of the children asked if the school could develop a link with the Bishops, whilst others asked about the Bishop’s cassock. “It was really lovely to meet the children, I was particularly touched the child who wanted to know why they couldn’t have a Bishop Revd Helen Jary, David Walls Manager at CBC, Bishop of Lynn, as they were called Bishop’s School.” The Bishop Revd Peter Herbert and Revd Matthew Jackson during their then moved onto Thetford Priory, King’s House visit to the Charles Burrell Centre and St Cuthbert’s. Bishop Jonathan even found time in his busy schedule to have his picture taken with the Captain Mainwaring statue! Later in the afternoon Bishop Jonathan visited the Charles Burrell Centre as he wanted to give The Horticultural Industry Project a blessing and also one for the Centre, “This is my second visit to the Centre, it’s a really vibrant community. What is being done here in lots of different ways is helping those little green leaves to flourish and develop. The focus of our day is making a pilgrimage of prayer, we’ve been trying to rejoice and engage in different ways.” If you have an event or activity that you would like Karen to cover please email karen@aboutthetfordmagazine.co.uk or call on 07540463662 (Tuesday - Friday) Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 9

Local Business Offers Great Deals Sole Traders and Small Businesses in Thetford are set to benefit from some great Business Mobile Deals. The Digital Phone Company have recently celebrated 25 years of operating locally on the high street. The firm, located in Thetford as well as other Norfolk towns, offer mobile phone solutions on people’s doorstep. The company’s success has been built around providing customers ongoing support throughout the duration of any contract, a service often charged for by larger national stores. This service has seen Digital Phone Company retain their loyal customer base and is why the high-street remains a focal point for the business. As they enter their 26th year of trading, Digital Phone Company are adding something extra by offering Sole Traders, Partnerships and Small Businesses bespoke mobile phone packages. Richard King, Sales Director explained, “These customers usually have to ‘make-do’ with standard retail offers, which often fail to meet their specific needs. We understand that as a business owner, a Sole Trader may have different demands to a normal phone user. Our business tariffs allow us to adjust the tariff to suit the customer rather than making do with a ‘one-size fits all’ approach. As an example, the contract length may need to be of a specific tenure or data allowances may need adjusting to the demands of the business” Whether you are a plumber, a singer or operate a website from home, if you run your own business you will qualify for these bespoke business plans. Small sole traders as well as larger businesses are able to access this service; the company also state that the packages are very competitive and beat many online offers. Packages start from just £12.50 per month, with all makes/models of handsets available including Apple iPhone, Samsung, Sony, Nokia and Huawei.

Activities Galore For Rainbows The local Rainbows have had a busy time lately. Quite apart from their fun, interactive weekly sessions they have enjoyed a camping experience, a “Parkrun Takeover” where they ran or walked the course, cheered runners on and had a bake sale too, a storytelling through music and dance session at Centre Stage Studio and taken part in a Festival of Words in Norwich where 2 of 3 prizes for short stories were awarded to our Thetford Rainbows! Most recently Rainbows offered to help make paper flowers for the Hand Made Garden at the Salvation Army Hall that was part of Thetford Open Gardens. Hilary from the Crafty Cuppa Club popped in to show us all how to make the flowers which of course were Rainbow coloured! The Units in Thetford (Rainbows, Brownies and Guides) are run by volunteers who help to encourage, inspire and educate the girls to be the best they can be, be thoughtful of one another and the wider community but of course have fun along the way.

New Kitchen for Cloverfield Church Cloverfield Church celebrated the reopening of its revamped kitchen during June and About Thetford magazine’s Billie Lawler was pleased to be invited along to the opening ceremony. For a couple of years the Church and the groups that use the facilities there had spoken about how wonderful it would be to have a brand new, modern kitchen and after much hard work fundraising the new kitchen was officially opened by the Mayor of Thetford Councillor Brenda Canham. Tim Peacock, a church elder spoke at the opening about how Cloverfield Church was an integral part of the local community, used not only by the congregation but many community groups and individuals. He was pleased that the modern kitchen would enable more groups to offer better services and that so many local people had collaborated to make the project work. The Reverend Helen Jary blessed the new kitchen and Jo Mountjoy -Dixon described what a positive difference the new kitchen was already making to the weekly lunch provision at TADDS (Thetford and District Dementia Support). All were in agreement that the kitchen would not have happened without grants and funds applied for and given from Trusts such as Celia Della Hoy Croxton Charity, the Pearson Family Fund and Garfield Weston (who donated £35,000 from a bid placed by the TADDS chairperson), All Churches Trust and more.

This month’s Thetford Face is James Samuel. James has been making his name in the world of magic from a very young age and most recently appeared in the final of TV show Britain’s Got Talent as part of the magic group 4MG. What do you like about growing up in the town? I like the fact there’s so many cultures here. You can go down town and taste food from all over the world. I think the multicultural mix in the town has made it more interesting. I’ve visited so many places with my magic, but I really like Thetford and being here. It’s always going to be my home.

James (right) at home in Thetford with his best friend Martynas

How old were you when you discovered magic? I was around 4 years old when I was given a magic set for Christmas or my birthday. I also used to watch Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow who used to do a few tricks in their shows. They really inspired me. When they brought out a magic set, I ran down to Woolworths to get one and have never stopped.

Have you got any other interests? It’s always been about magic, magic, magic. I just loved it from the moment I did my first trick. I spent all my money on DVDs, books and conventions, there’s nothing else I’d rather do. My brother who doesn’t like magic, changed his mind after seeing me on Britain’s Got Talent, before he used to get fed up with being my guinea pig at times! How old were you when you started performing? When I was 13 or 14 years old I started to do kids shows and birthday parties around the town. I found that kids really enjoy and respond well to a younger magician. I also used to perform at family events. I then started to move into close up magic which is what I really love now.

One of James’ earliest magic performances

How did you develop your magic? I started looking for professional tricks and advice online and to see what I could pick up. When I was 12 I joined a Magic Society in Ipswich. My parents took me to conventions around the country in places like Blackpool, Birmingham & London so I could learn and meet professional magicians. What’s the best thing about performing magic? Magic is so visual; it breaks down barriers. You can go anywhere in the world and people will enjoy watching a trick performed.

What is your advice for other young people? If you have a passion and you want to do something, you should go for it. It doesn’t matter what your background is, you can follow your dreams. I’ve been inspired by others who work hard and make the most of their opportunities. I found showing off tricks enabled me to talk to people. How did 4MG get together? I travelled to Kent to visit a magic shop, Harry and Theo were working in the shop and demonstrating tricks, Josh was another customer. We got talking and decided to get together and audition for Britain’s Got Talent. The audition was the first time we performed together .

Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 18

How did you manage to perfect your act when you lived apart from each other? We practised like mad, I travelled down to Kent each week and we just worked really hard to prepare ourselves. I knew magicians hadn’t always been well received, but I thought it was definitely worth the shot, the exposure we’d get if we got through would definitely be worth it. To get to the Palladium was incredible, but it was a long journey. When did you start the BGT process? We had our audition in January and had to keep it quiet until it was shown. It was quite incredible being on the show, Britain’s Got Talent have really looked after us well. At the start I was really nervous but being on the show makes you become a better performer and opens doors. We’ve gained followers from across the globe.

seminars, public speaking, gaming, or working out at Snap Fitness. Like anyone my age I go out on nights out with my friends and I’ve had the same best friend Martynas since we were in year 7. What is your favourite thing about Thetford? I just love the community; everyone knows someone who knows someone. I love the town, there’s some beautiful scenic areas that not many people talk about. For more information please visit: www.jamessamuelmagic.webs.com TRUSTED LOCKSMITHING SERVICES

Call your local 24 hour locksmith 4MG with BGT judge Amanda Holden during filming

Were you expecting the level of support you received locally? I’ve just been overwhelmed with the support from the town. We are hoping to do a show here at some point because the support was so fantastic, to say thank you. What’s been happening since you appeared on the show? At the moment I’m tied up with everything that being on BGT brings, but I know it’s short lived and I have other plans for my magic. I’ve always found my own work. I love performing at my old school, it’s crazy seeing my old teachers who can see what I achieved. I’d like to be able to start up some magic workshops or mentoring a young person. Aside from magic, what else can we find you doing? I really enjoy self-development books and

Shedding Light On A Seafaring Service For anyone involved with boating or shipping, the name Trinity House conjures up an important maritime service, but to others it is something of a mystery. At Thetford Probus Club’s June meeting, guest speaker Karl Lumbers, who described his mixed career as always involving ‘driving boats’, quickly shed light on the centuries-old organisation and its wide-ranging work perhaps best known for the powerful light its 66 lighthouses beam across the sea alerting seafarers to hazards around our coastline.

But while these iconic buildings are highly visible and fulfil a vital service, they are only one aspect of far reaching work that Trinity House does to ensure safety at sea. The charity’s origins stretch back over 500 years and the speaker explained the history and traditions that shaped it. The oldest duty is to provide support to aged mariners and as part of this it runs 18 almshouses. Besides charitable work, Trinity House has developed into an organisation employing the latest technology across a whole range of services from training for ships’ pilots, to the maintenance of over 10,000 navigational buoys, including those used by oil and gas rigs and wind farms. Pointing out that 95 per cent of all goods arriving and leaving the UK is by sea, the speaker showed how Trinity House’s role is vital in helping to ensure safety in some of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. The well-presented talk included videos and pictures. There was an opportunity for questions and members showed their appreciation in the usual way. BBC Big Painting Challenge Winner’s Work Comes To Ancient House Ancient House is excited to announce it will be displaying Suman Kaur’s Sophia Duleep Singh watercolour this summer as part of the Festival of Norfolk and Punjab. Suman Kaur won the BBC’s The Big Painting Challenge in 2017. Since then she has exhibited in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition and at the People’s Palace Glasgow for Billy Connolly's lifetime Exhibition. Speaking about the painting Suman said, “I was influenced by the painting of The Maharajah Duleep Singh by Franz Xaver Winterhalter and wanted to give the same strong stance to his daughter. I painted using fine art brushes and paper traditionally used for miniature paintings in India yet the style is based on western illustrations from the 1920s. There are key details such as duplicated jewellery from the family collection and an umbrella as per suffragette campaign umbrellas. Layers of the surface is something I have explored in my other works. I wanted to embrace both cultures I’ve grown up with as a British Asian and I reflect this here’. The piece was exhibited last year at the Faith in Peace and War display Kirkstall Abbey, as part of Leeds commemorations marking 100 years since the signing of the historic Armistice. Sophia Duleep Singh was a leading suffragette who marched at the infamous Black Friday March in 1910 and took part in the 1911 Census Boycott. During WW1 Princess Sophia nursed soldiers on the East Coast. The watercolour makes reference to this with the inclusion of a Red Cross. Oliver Bone, curator said, “We are delighted to display Suman Kaur’s work as part of our Princess Sophia exhibition in the museum.” The Duleep Singhs, the last Royal family of the Punjab, were associated with Norfolk for almost a century. Their legacy in Norfolk is far-reaching. Prince Frederick Duleep Singh founded Ancient House Museum in Thetford, saved many local churches from closure by raising funds and supporting renovation works, and was also a discerning collector, amassing a wonderful collection of books and portraits about the County, later donated to the borough of Thetford by himself and his sisters. Suman Kaur’s watercolour along with the Princess Sophia exhibition will be on show at Ancient House Museum until 3rd August 2019.

Over 50’s Taxi Scheme Continues

Colchester Trip For Thetford U3A

Following a successful 3 month trial launched at their annual Community Wellbeing Fayre, Thetford Local People’s Project are funding a 12 month Taxi Voucher Scheme for Over 50s in funded areas of the town in partnership with LJs Taxis.

Members of Thetford U3A’s Day Group recently went on a trip to Colchester. They divided into groups, with a few visiting the zoo and the remainder went into the town. They were lucky with the lovely weather and many wandered around, looking at the beautiful settings and variety of animals at the zoo. The other group were taking the time to view the shops and relax in the gardens at the beautiful castle.

Sheena Tate, Community Engagement Worker with the project says, “Engagement has continuously shown that there is a lack of accessible and affordable transport within Thetford for less mobile Over 50s and no community transport schemes. This has remained the priority issue for local people and we wanted to help address this by offering a voucher scheme whereby savings can be made on some journeys. LJs Taxis have two wheelchair accessible vehicles, both of which have capacity to take a manual or electric wheelchair using a ramp to enter the vehicle. They also have a step and well placed handrails to aid with access. We hope therefore that no one should be precluded from getting out and about and enjoying social interaction because of disability/ mobility and age related issues.”

Catherine Dubois, the Group Leader for Industrial Tourism Group said; “Since 2016 the group have been to the last shoe making factory ‘Van Dal’, Anglia Water recycling plant, STANTA the battle area, Shadwell Euston Estates, Gorse Industrial Estate, Thetford Town Hall, Thetford Fire Station, Sizewell B Nuclear Power Plant, Lakenheath ‘Liberty Wings’ Air Base and the British Trust for 0rnithology. The members enjoy going backstage to observe, listen, try to understand how some factories or companies function. Due to health and safety we’re sometimes not able to access places”. Details of this and other interest groups can be seen online at www.thetfordu3a.org. Groups are free to access for members, or £2 for visitors.

Further details of this scheme and vouchers are available to those eligble by contacting LJs Taxis on 07518 960182. This scheme is funded by People’s LJ Taxis AD.qxp_Layout Health Trust1/8 using money raised 1by 08/11/2017 Health Lottery15:51 East Page and supported by Royal Voluntary Service

Calling, Pubs, Cafes And Tea Rooms In Thetford New venues are sought to help combat loneliness and strengthen community links. MeetUpMondays is an initiative launched in 2018 which offers hospitality businesses the chance to strengthen their local community and show that the commercial world also cares about ending the scourge of loneliness. The simple premise is that once a week, pubs, cafes and tea rooms offer a couple of hours of free tea, coffee and nibbles to people who are fed up with their own company, giving them a chance to meet others and connect more with their community. The approach taken helps to normalise talking about loneliness without those attending feeling ‘labelled’ as lonely. It gives people not just something to look forward to, but reasons to get up in the morning; new friendships to make new plans with; company and comfort after bereavement; and gives people a chance to just ‘be’, in a ‘real life’ setting with company they might not otherwise have access to.

is key: offering a regular time every week and making a local setting familiar, opens up a whole new social world for the visitors. MeetUpMondays can be an important lifeline for some, so it should be something that is integrated into the normal, weekly running of each venue, rather than something to be trialled and then dropped, as visitors come to rely on its presence and regularity. In Thetford, MeetUpMondays runs at The Engine Room at Charles Burrell Centre each week from 12 noon until 2pm. Shut Out Due To Sight Loss: Three In Four Guide Dog Owners Illegally Refused Service New figures, launched today, show that three-quarters of guide dog owners (76%) have been illegally turned away by businesses and services, such as taxis, restaurants, shops, cafes, hotels and pubs. As well as being against the Equality Act 2010, these access refusals have now been shown to have a devastating impact on people’s mental health. The research, from Guide Dogs, shows that more than two thirds (72%) of guide and assistance dog owners say it negatively affects their ability to go out socially, 70% say it has a negative emotional impact and more than half (55%) say it negatively affects their quality of life. To tackle these refusals, Guide Dogs and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) have recently collaborated to create new support to empower those facing discrimination. The Equality Act toolkit provides information and advice to guide dog owners across England, Scotland and Wales, informing them of their legal rights and including practical information and guides to challenge access refusals.

calling for the Government to introduce mandatory disability equality training for all taxi and minicab drivers to help prevent refusals from taking place. A new jointly-produced toolkit contains details of a guide dog owner’s rights under the Equality Act 2010 (England, Scotland and Wales) or the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (Northern Ireland), a stepby-step guide to making a complaint, an example complaint letter, plus an advocacy letter from Guide Dogs and RNIB with a summary of the law and further information about the service provider’s obligations.

Too busy?

Guide Dog’s research also offers insight into where access refusals happen most often, with data showing that the most commonly reported businesses refusing access were:

Guide dog owners can get the toolkit from their local Guide Dogs team, or from RNIB on 0303 123 9999.

- Minicabs and private hire vehicles (73%), - Restaurants (71%), - Convenience stores (60%), - Cafes (59%). On Wednesday 19th June, 100 guide dog owners went to Parliament to speak with their MPs about their experiences of being refused access. Guide Dogs, supported by 30 organisations including the RNIB, is

Garden And Allotment Club Notes July already – and now you can enjoy the reward for your hard work earlier in the year. Lots of colour in the garden along with a fascinating range of leaf shapes and different shades of green. Perhaps treat yourself to a new seat or bench so that you can have another view of your garden, catching the sun or shade as you prefer. If you have a dry, sunny patch where ‘normal’ plants struggle, you could consider planting slow growing herbs. I find purple sage does better in my garden than the green variety and with oregano and mint, rosemary and a bay tree, you could have a fragrant corner requiring little work and giving you wonderful herbs for use in the kitchen. If you are going on holiday this month and can spare the time, trim off flowers where the plants will form new buds to welcome you home. Alternatively, if you are a ‘staycationer’ this year and have been thinking of getting an allotment, there are untenanted plots available now - imagine how fit and tanned you could become, bringing the land into use – get in touch with the Town Council if you are interested. It is St Swithun’s Day on the 15th with the tradition that rain on this day will be followed by 40 more days of rain. This seems very unlikely in Norfolk but we usually get more settled weather systems around this time of year. We’ll certainly hope it stays fine for the 27th which will be the second celebration of Norfolk Day and for the events of the Punjab Festival throughout the month. If that’s not enough, there may be someone in your household ready to celebrate World Chocolate Day on July 7th.

Georgette Vale will be appearing as Lucilla Reeve who was evicted from her farm to make way for Stanta. This is a story with great local interest and all are welcome to attend. Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

Fair Attendees Help Judge Photographs Hockwold Country Fair was regarded as being a great success for everyone taking part this year. The weather was glorious and there was plenty for visitors to see and take part in. Brandon & District Photographic Club asked all visitors to our stand to vote on the pictures displayed, either as a Free Vote or by taking part in the Prize Draw and it must be said that Pat Childerhouse had an incredible day. His picture ‘Hares at Play’ achieved the most votes in both the £1 Draw and the Free Votes, making it the overall winner on the day, Jeff Prosser came tied 2nd in both sections with Forest Sunrise behind Pat’s ‘Look into my Eyes, Fighting Pheasants, Wells, Little and Large and of course Hares at Play. Joint second in the £1 Draw Votes went to Denise Whiting with Working the Land and 3rd in the Free Votes went to Shirley Glaister with Dawns Rays on a Frosty Glade. The Prize Draw winner walked away with Caralyn Walker’s Flowers in Ice. You will get another chance this summer to see some of our member’s work at Weeting Steam Rally on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st July. Don’t miss it – you will again be able to vote for your favourite photo and there

Here Be Dragons! Mention insects to most people and their first thoughts are often of ‘pests’ such as wasps, mosquitoes or ticks – and the idea of specifically watching them would seem distinctly eccentric! However, there are some groups that are not only fascinating to observe but also easy to find, and very beautiful, too. Dragonflies and damselflies fall into this category, and they reach their peak numbers in the summer months. An adult dragonfly can be identified by its four long wings, lack of obvious antennae and long thin body, also known as the thorax. Dragonflies are further subdivided into two groups, dragonflies and damselflies, which are collectively known as ‘Odonata’. Damselflies differ from dragonflies by always folding their wings closed and parallel to the body when resting, whilst dragonflies always hold them in an open position, at right angles to the body. Dragonflies spend the majority of their life cycles as aquatic larvae, called nymphs, in small ponds, lakes and rivers. All nymphs are ferocious predators, catching prey such as mosquito larvae. The largest species can even tackle small fish and tadpoles! Adults emerge directly from the nymph stage, usually resting on a reed stem or other waterside vegetation to shed their final nymph skin. Adults usually live for several days or weeks, feeding on other flying insects such as midges. Even a small garden pond will attract one or two species of dragonfly, and it can be absorbing to look for emerging adults in spring or the nymphs later in the year. Away from your garden, a good place to start watching dragonflies in Thetford is along the Little Ouse, especially Spring Walk, where the very distinctive Banded Demoiselle can be seen fluttering low over the water. Seen in good light, males are an incredible iridescent blue, with large dark blue patches on the LIKE US ON

Dragonfly image by Stephen McAvoy otherwise translucent wings. Females are a deep green colour. For more of a challenge, head to the BTO’s Nunnery Lakes reserve where you can find dainty Blue-tailed and Common Blue Damselflies flying along grassy paths, while Red-eyed Damselflies dart out from the lilypads and other floating objects on the lakes themselves. Larger species, such as Four-spotted Chaser and Common Darter can be seen hunting over the reserve. These may even attract the attention of a passing Hobby, a small bird of prey which specialises in catching dragonflies on the wing. As well as the Nunnery Lakes, the area around Thetford has some outstanding sites for watching dragonflies, including Lakenheath Fen (RSPB) and Thompson Common (Norfolk Wildlife Trust), near Great Hockham. Further afield, the Norfolk Broads are home to a wide variety of species, and is perhaps the best area to see the rare Norfolk Hawker in Britain. If you are bitten by the dragonfly watching bug, the British Dragonfly Society website has more information, including identification guides. You can also log your sightings online via the BTO, who pass records to the British Dragonfly Society, at; www.birdtrack.net

Breckland Cats Protection As your cat enters his golden years, he’ll need some extra understanding for his changing lifestyle. Cats are generally considered geriatric from around 12 years of age and there are lots of simple steps you can take to ensure the later years of your cat’s life are comfortable and happy. You will be rewarded with a content pet, who is often happy to spend much time quietly at home as a wonderful companion. Ageing can affect your cat’s activity levels, appetite, vision, hearing, bowel and urinary systems, immune system and sleep. Alongside these, age associated disorders may develop, such as arthritis, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or renal impairment. You may also notice some behavioural changes. Some owners worry about mentioning problems they’ve noticed in their older cat to their vet, but it is important to remember that vets are concerned with providing the best quality of life for your pet. Regular trips to the vet are essential as your cat ages to ensure that he is not suffering. Reduced interaction with other pets can be a sign that your cat is not well. There are a number of small changes that can be made to your home which will have a big impact on the quality of your cat’s life. Allow your cat to reach favourite places to rest by strategically placing boxes or furniture for him to climb. Make sure he has a variety of cosy, well-padded beds in safe, warm places that can be readily accessed. Your cat may enjoy the hammock-style radiator beds as they are very warm. Provide several litter trays in the house at all times, even if your cat has toileted outside all of his life. There are also a variety of senior diets available to provide balanced nutrition aimed specifically for older cats. Older cats may also find it more difficult to wash and groom. You may need to help by grooming your cat gently with a soft brush.

Owners often comment on the special relationship they have with their older pet, enhanced by some simple measures and an understanding of his needs. For help or advice or if you need assistance with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. Rita Thompson

Benefits Of Tinting Many people have never considered having their eyebrows or lashes tinted, but it is a very simple technique which can create a great look. The benefits of tinting are that it is perfect for those of us who have fair skin, pale fine lashes and brows, or allergies to mascara or find it difficult to see to apply mascara. People who do lots of sports, swimming etc and don’t want mascara running down their face are perfect candidates. The colour gets right to the base of the lashes and makes them appear darker and longer. There are several benefits to having your brows tinted too. Eyebrows frame the face and by having them tinted and shaped it can really enhance a person’s features, Unlike pencil which washes off, it can last up to a month and lash tinting can last 4-6 weeks. It is always important to make sure and have a patch test first prior to any tinting and with current regulations and insurance policies a patch needs to be repeated every few weeks. Kind regards, Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days Skincare

Thetford Inner Wheel The June meeting saw the end of Thetford Inner Wheel’s year when Jenny Childerhouse handed over the chain of office of President to Cathy Witton. It has been a very interesting year when we had many varied speakers at our meetings. Successful fundraising events had taken place over the year including a wonderful Armistice Day lunch when Rotary joined forces with us. As a result of raising £1250 over the whole year we have been able to help various charities both local and overseas, the latest donations going to the Dementia Charity TADDS and a club run to teach children cooking.

Thetford Society News We began our June meeting with the usual round up of forthcoming events followed by a request for volunteers to fill several of our committee positions, in particular the Secretary and Membership posts. We are also seeking individuals who have an interest in historic buildings and our local environment to help with our capacity to lobby the authorities about Thetford’s heritage. Graham Mayhew is an author who has researched Lewes (close to Brighton) Priory and the Cluniac Order network, of which Thetford Priory is a part. The story began with William de Warenne and his wife Gundrada who wanted to make a pilgrimage to Rome but only reached Cluny in France where they visited the Benedictine order there. William was a leading Norman Baron with land in Sussex so he brought the idea back to Britain and built on the site of a Saxon Church between 1078 – 1082. Others such as Bermondsey, Thetford, Castle Acre, Wenlock and Pontefract were built later, whilst Reading and Faversham were influential Monasteries. Lewes Priory had may repairs and additions up until its dissolution in 1537 after Gorse Motors March 2016_Layout 1 16/02/2016 08:02 which it was briefly owned by Thomas Cromwell (Chief Minister to Henry VIII). As with most religious sites the buildings were destroyed with the stone being reused in the local area. It suffered further in 1845 when the railway cut a swathe through one side of it. This once magnificent building was a scaled down version of that which they saw in Clunes and measured 420 x 70ft wide; in comparison Thetford was 300ft long.

Club Enters Prestigeous Competition On Thursday 13th June Team TTBC travelled down to Alexandra Palace to take part in the Haringey Box Cup. This is a three day event spread over the weekend, with boxers potentially boxing three times in a quarter final, semi final and the final. The Haringey Box Cup is an international tournament with 5 rings set up and boxers travelling from as far as Canada! Kieran Keen entered in the Youth B 56kg category and Roman Novickis entered the Senior B 75kg category. Both boxers weighed in on the Friday morning and made their weights comfortably. Up first in the quarter finals was Kieran Keen boxing Taylor Jackson Smith, a skilful lad from Essex university, the bout was close but Kieran had the edge all the way through and got a unanimous win, securing his place in the semi finals. Next up Roman Novickis boxed Gibril Kamara from Brighton City. Roman boxed strong against a skilful boxer, out powering him with his hooks, however unfortunately he didn’t get the decision he wanted.

Coaches from Thetford Town Boxing Club along with Roman (second left) and Kieran (fourth from left) at Alexandra Palace

On Saturday Kieran came up against Anthony Kruger from Minster GG. Kieran boxed extremely well using effective counter punches, delivering punches to the head and body, it was a very close bout but unfortunately luck wasn’t on Kieran’s side and he didn’t get the decision. Although the boxers didn’t get the gold medals they were hoping for, they did however gain a really valuable experience that will push them forward with their boxing and prepare them for future competitions. Thetford Town Boxing Club are very proud of Kieran and Roman and hope to take an even bigger team next year. We would like to also say thank you to coaches Matt, Graham, Paul and Darrell who accompanied the boys. Roni Dean

National Call Up For Archy 17 year old Archy Stannard from Rushbrook is celebrating having been selected for the England Skeet Team. Archy will be the youngest member of the squad and one of 3 juniors selected to join the 10 Seniors, 3 ladies, 3 Veteran (60+) and 3 Super Veteran (65+) members. In August Archy will travel along with the squad to the Home Internationals in County Donegal, Ireland where he will compete over 2 days. “I’m very excited, it’s a dream come true to represent England,” Archy continued, “it was hard work getting through the trials but I was really pleased with my results.” Archy had to compete against the best 15 juniors in the country who were invited to 3 selection shoots. The best 2 scores from those shoots were then used to select the 3 squad members. In total Archy hit 588 targets out of 600 to gain his place. Gemma, Archy’s mum said she was very proud, “it’s been a big thing for him this year, the whole family are delighted especially his Grandad and Nan who are both experienced national competitiors themselves.” Adam Hart Photography can be found on Facebook

Logging Your Workouts Are you currently training at a gym, at home or with a friend with no actual structure? Many people I speak to often say the same things; Rich, I’m struggling to lose/gain weight. I find it really hard to gain muscle. I’ve been doing the same thing for a while now and nothing’s happening. This can be down to ‘tracking your workouts’. It doesn’t matter how good your memory is, you’ll never be able to remember the exact amount of reps you’ve done, on each weight, for how many sets and the rest you have between them! Physically making notes on your training sessions is the way forward to help you reach your goals. Grab yourself a notebook, the old school pen and paper will never lose battery on you and by writing these things down, helps you remember more and has less distractions than popping your notes down on your phone then social media surfing between sets! This is the same for your eating habits. If your main goal is to cut down on some calories to burn some fat, get it logged! There are some brilliant apps out there that can help you keep on top of your calorie intake and help you stay motivated while doing so! If time or direction is an issue, it maybe worth looking at a professional to help with your training and help keep you on track! Personal Training is offered at The Functional Fitness Suite between myself and another female PT, if this is of interest to you, then get in touch! If not, get those workouts tracked and what’s passing those lips! Richard Taylor, Tiger Fitness Deadline for inclusion in the August About Thetford magazine will be the 15th July. County Bowls Success For Club The Norfolk County Squad trials were held on Sunday 19th May at Hingham Sports & Social Club. There was a good turnout from all over the County and Norfolk County Manager, Simon Willies said “Overall the bowling on display was of a very high standard with some very close fought games and some good fightbacks. The Norfolk County squad is in very good hands with a blend of young and old talent and experience shining through. All of you certainly made the decision very hard as to who to include in the squad”
