Smoke Detectors Save Lives
t
i
I r
t
The recent house fires in Thetford have caused concern and raised residents’ awareness of keeping safe at home. Did you know that you are around eight times more likely to die in a house fire without a working smoke detector, that every 3 days across the UK someone dies from a fire in their home started by a cigarette, and 90 people die each year because their smoke detector wasn’t working? A smoke detector (aka smoke alarm) is a warning device that detects smoke at the earliest stages of fire in your home. It emits a piercing sound to alert you as soon as possible so that you have precious minutes to escape. Norfolk Fire & Rescue Service encourage everybody to fit them in their homes because they will alert you to the danger, alert neighbours and allow us to attend to you sooner rather than later. If you suspect or see fire in your home, we ask that you – GET OUT, STAY OUT and GET THE FIRE SERVICE OUT by dialling 999. How many smoke detectors do you need?
If your home is on one level (a flat or bungalow) you need to fit at least one smoke detector. Ideally you would want to place it near your main living room and bedroom. If your home has more than one floor you will need to fit one on each level, with a detector in the downstairs hallway and then on each landing. If you fit more than one alarm, they should be linked to one another, which means if one detects smoke they will all alert you. The best place to fit a smoke detector is on the ceiling and try to keep them at least 30cm (1ft) away from walls, lights, doors, heating or air vents. Please test them...
i r
t t
i
Once fitted, please test them. Can you hear it loud and clear from each room in the house? Test it again with the doors closed, particularly from the bedroom where it would be more difficult to hear if you were asleep. Smoke detectors need to be regularly tested to ensure that they remain in good working order. We say ‘Test it Tuesday’ as it is easy to remember. Ideally you should test them at least once a month, using the test button on the alarm. Remember to change the battery once a year unless they have a 10-year battery. Keep them clean, don’t stick anything on them or paint over them. A gentle vacuuming around the casing will help to keep them dust free. Every 10 years you will need to replace the smoke detector with a new one. Perhaps change the battery on your birthday or at Christmas, keeping your family safe is the best gift of all.
A smoke alarm will give you vital minutes to escape from a fire and could save your life
Plan an escape route... Once you have fitted your smoke detectors, plan a safe escape route. Keep your chosen route clear as we want you to leave the house quickly and safely. Most house fires happen in the night, so consider keeping a phone in your bedroom and keep keys where you can find them. Consider closing your doors when you go to bed, this adds to your protection in the event of fire and practise your escape plan with all members of your household to make sure it works.
r
r r
Be aware of risks in the home…
We attend accidental fires in many homes due to careless smoking. It’s safest to smoke outside but make sure cigarettes are put right out and disposed of properly. Never smoke in bed and avoid smoking on armchairs and sofas, especially if you are tired. A lit cigarette dropped onto a bed, chair, fabrics or combustible materials can quickly cause a serious fire. People react differently when accidental fires occur, this can be due to an individual’s mobility, age, and ability to react. Older people may find it more difficult to escape their home quickly due to poor health or reduced movement and younger people may be distracted by their technology, particularly mobile phones, gaming equipment and headphones. Wearing headphones can dramatically affect your ability to hear and therefore react to a smoke alarm sounding. Please consider your own personal risks within your home and visit our website to use the Home Fire Risk Self Checker. If you are over 65 or have a disability which could make it more difficult to react to a fire, you may be eligible for a free home fire safety visit to check your home for risks. Do you or someone you know need a little extra help? Please use the request form on our website: www.norfolk.gov.uk/safety/ norfolk-fire-and-rescue-service/ or by email at: hq@fire.norfolk.gov.uk or phone 0800 9178137. Thetford Priory To Host Live Theatre i

t i t t
The medieval Thetford Priory is to be transformed into a theatrical backdrop this summer, as Breckland Council has organised for two exciting open-air theatre performances to take place. Chapterhouse Theatre Company will perform a new production of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet on 31st August, followed by family favourite pantomime, Cinderella the following day (1st September). The shows have recently been touring across Ireland and the UK. Councillor Paul Claussen, Executive Member for Economic Development and Growth said: "We're thrilled to be bringing these fantastic performances to Thetford and to be making the most of the wonderful Priory, thanks to the support of English Heritage which owns the site” Romeo and Juliet, a classic story packed with feuding families and two star-crossed lovers trying to find happiness is sure to be a highlight for the open-air theatre season. Meanwhile, Cinderella will take attendees on a magical journey to a far-away enchanted kingdom, featuring silly songs, panto puns and pumpkin carriages, where nearly anything is possible especially if it's before midnight. Children and visitors of all ages are invited to dress in their favourite fairy tale characters and join the midsummer ball! Councillor Susan Dowling, representative for the Thetford Priory Ward said; “Thetford has so much to offer in terms of its rich heritage. The Priory will provide a wonderful backdrop for this live theatre event and I am pleased that we’re making use of it in this way and celebrating this wonderful asset.” Breckland Council are using these events to pilot the place branding ambitions set out in the Hemingway Design work conducted last year. The events will celebrate Thetford's rich heritage, the river, and our active community, as part of a
programme of summer activity. Breckland Council has subsidised the cost of the performances at the Priory and are working closely with local partners to offer several free events to be confirmed soon.

Thetford Singers Perform With Katherine Jenkins

A group of Thetford Singers marked the Platinum Jubilee in a very special way by performing with Welsh superstar mezzo soprano Katherine Jenkins at Sandringham Royal Parkland. All the ladies sing in the Honington Military Wives Choir, who are celebrating their 10th year of singing together, as the charity marks the 10th anniversary of their official formation. Military Wives Choirs (MWCs) exist to support women whose lives have been impacted by their military connection, including serving personnel, veterans, wives, widows, partners, mothers, sisters, daughters and women employed within the military community. Their motto is Sing, Share, Support. It has grown to nearly 2000 women in 72 choirs across the UK and internationally. They come together to celebrate a love of singing and a communal understanding that comes from shared experiences of the Armed Forces.

The three choirs have previously sung together at Ely and Norwich Cathedrals and St Mary’s Church in Bury St Edmunds, and joined other choirs in Colchester to record their last album ‘Remember’.
Back in December 2021, the charity was asked to perform alongside Katherine Jenkins in Sandringham Royal Park over the Jubilee On June 3rd, the choir performed to over 3000 weekend. individual choirs, Honington, Simon LongThe HP Advert 2018.qxp_Layout 1 13/09/2018 10:01 Page 1 Wattisham and Marham were contacted in March people, their largest audience to date. Military Wives film and their latest album. The choirs had a 30-minute slot to sound check for their own set, then a rehearsal for the finale song with Katherine Jenkins. Katherine and her team chose the final song, Dancing Queen by Abba, with the arrangement specifically written by David Harrington. This was chosen as a tribute to our Queen who reportedly loves Abba. The choirs had great fun with this song and the audience loved it. They finished off with a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ mix of patriotic songs. Speaking about the performance Jo Cooper said, “What an amazing day! Katherine was very gracious, complimenting the MWC on how we all sounded and that she had enjoyed singing with us. We were able to have a photo opportunity with her during the interval;
although there was no real opportunity to speak to her individually, she always had a smile or a wave. I feel very honoured to have been singing at Sandringham for the Platinium Jubilee with such an amazing group of ladies, Katherine Jenkins was the icing on the cake! Whenever I sing, it's for my dad and it can be so emotional; I know this would have made him proud.” Following the show, Honington MWC went straight into rehearsals for their next events, opening the Beer Festival in St Edmundsbury Cathedral, on 14th June and then St Albans Cathedral on 18th June with over 200 members of the Military Wives Choirs to celebrate the 10th Year Anniversary. The team at The Mulberry are looking forward to a busy summer season and marking their 12th birthday this autumn. The family owned, much loved business has become a Thetford institution over the years, it’s been the place to celebrate birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and all manner of special occasions. The menu is British with a Mediterranean twist, using as many locally sourced ingredients as possible. We had so much support from the local community during the height of the covid pandemic, it kept us going through some difficult times. We’re now pleased to be welcoming back familiar faces along with new customers.” Karen hasn’t forgotten the help they received, and when a regular customer asked if there was any work available for the 17year old Ukrainian, that they had sponsored recently; she didn’t hesitate to help. “He’s here with his mum and sister and is super nice but is really keen to go back and finish his studies. We’re just pleased we were able to help” she explained.
The brand new menu launched on June 14th, includes dishes such as Blackened King Prawns To book a table from with watermelon, feta, Tuesday to Saturday pea shoots and sweet please call Karen on onion, plus Herb Butter Dishes from the new summer menu at 01842 824122. Our aim is to promote well-being through social interaction, friendship and mutual understanding. We have been very keen in the past year, since Covid restrictions have eased, to organise trips to a variety of places such as National Trust properties, garden centres and gardens, and members have also attended well-being talks. Our meetings are relaxed and informal, often we have quizzes or play games, but have also invited people to give artistic demonstrations such as glass-fusing. We occasionally invite speakers along who are able to advise on topics such as diet or appropriate exercise, although we do not give medical advice, we may offer suggestions of other organisations that might be able to help. If you, or someone you know, have/has been affected by cancer please pop along to meet us. In addition to our Facebook public page and closed member only group, we are also listed in Leaping Hare’s online directory and we have recently set up a website at: www.brecklandcancersupport.group

New Mental Health Cafe Opens In Town This week regional charity Access Community Trust proudly opened its third purpose focused Mental Health café on Tanner Street in Thetford. f f

Access Community Trust promotes social inclusion for the community benefit by preventing people from becoming socially excluded, relieving the needs of those who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society. The community cafes run by Access Community Trust across Norfolk and Suffolk were Highly Commended by the Third Sector Awards in 2020 and have continued to offer a high standard of support to the community. The Steam House Cafe has transformed a former ground floor eatery, which has been closed since the beginning of the pandemic, into a modern and welcoming space providing holistic mental health support to those in need within the local community. The new community resource complements the existing wellbeing offering already available from the charity’s existing multifaceted free support service called The Crossing, which is situated above the cafe and already supports a growing client base seeking support due to the pandemic and current cost of living crisis. Open Monday to Friday from 10am until 4pm, the cafe provides a safe, friendly space where members of the community are able to simply seek mental health guidance and support in a relaxed setting. Alongside this drop-in service, the fully trained team offer 1:1 appointments and a growing range of group activities including yoga, mindfulness, and arts/craft therapy. Gemma Bush, Regional Service Manager for Access commented, “We are delighted to be opening our third Mental Health focused Steam House Café in Thetford. We purposely choose a highly visible town centre premises because it is easily accessible to those seeking support and guidance. Mental Health is no longer a taboo subject and everybody should feel comfortable talking about it. By taking that important message directly to the high street and supporting the local community with a range of support and drop-in therapies, we have made it easier for people to

Thetford’s Punjab Links Celebrated

The Festival of East Anglia & Punjab explores the cultural links between the two regions through the story and legacy of Maharajah Duleep Singh and the last royal family of the Punjab, who lived in Norfolk. This year also marks the 75th Anniversary of India and Pakistan independence, and the Partition that divided Punjab into two halves, when the once vast Kingdom of Duleep Singh was separated between two nations. With events taking place across Essex, Suffolk and Norfolk, the Festival of East Anglia & Punjab will bring communities together to share cultures, customs and traditions through heritage and the arts. With a wide range of activities planned, from melas, music and performances, to talks, food and family events, the festival will have something for everyone, appealing to people of all ages and from different backgrounds. Highlights include an exhibition on Princess Catherine Duleep Singh and an exciting programme of events
at Ancient House Museum; an exhibition on Maharajah Duleep Singh at Norfolk Record Office showcasing original artefacts from the Bance Collection; and Thetford Mela. The festival is back after a break of two years and has developed with a wider reach to new audiences, partners, and programming. The events will promote cultural tourism and the support the local economy in the Eastern Region. On Sunday July 10th a riot of colour and sound will descend on the town as dance, music, gatka, bhangra and Punjabi food will be celebrated from 1 – 5pm ‘On The Green’. Ancient House Museum will be open from 10am – 5pm, where costumed characters will share the connections between the Norfolk regiment and Duleep Singh. The Sikh Museum Initiative will also be demonstrating their digital Sikh relic object handling. Tips For Brow Grooming Here are a few little tips for unruly eyebrows! Occasionally, brows grow too long and can look very unkempt. People often pluck out a hair which maybe too long or coarse instead of opting to trim. This can leave brows looking patchy and uneven. If your brows like to do as they please instead of lying flat, a handy tip is an old mascara brush, wipe off any excess and use it to comb gently through the brows. It will keep them in place and can help to make them appear a little thicker and less uneven. If some of the brows appear too long, then brush them upwards and trim a small amount from the top. When you then comb them to lay flat towards the side of the face, they will not be too short and lay neatly. We often tint brows in the salon, this helps to give them more definition and to pigment any coarse, grey/white hairs. This is a better option than to pluck out random white ones leaving the brow looking too thin. Another option is permanent makeup. I really enjoy doing this as eyebrows frame the face and give us so many expressions. Some of my clients need full brow reconstruction as they may have over plucked over the years or for other reasons their brows just may have stopped growing. I always work by measuring the correct width and determine the shape by the client’s natural face shape and then work out which shade would best suit them. Brows are naturally always a few shades darker than your hair colour, but our skin has different under tones, some are cool and some warm. So there is a lot to consider before I even pick up my tattoo handpiece! The finished result will look very natural once it is healed and the true colour will be seen about a month after treatment. It’s called permanent makeup because the pigment always remains in the skin but I use soft tertiary colours so they fade natural over time hence, clients need a refresh of colour between, 12 to 18 months as a guide. Have a wonderful July, Kind regards, Lisa Stallings Halcyon Days Skincare Ltd

Thetford Flower Club held their second meeting on Tuesday 14th June with a summer party theme in recognition of the recent Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The club was delighted to welcome back Crystal Dyball with a colourful demonstration entitled ‘Up The Garden Path’. As well as keeping busy with orders for floral occasions, Crystal is a National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies area demonstrator, she travels widely, all over the Eastern region and demonstrates flower arranging. She also gives tutoring workshops to flower clubs, WI’s and others. Crystal bases all her workshops on fun, friendship and flowers! Crystal entertained members and friends with her beautiful arrangements and informative chat. This was followed by a raffle supplied by committee members, and a second raffle of Crystal’s flower Arrangements. The group then enjoyed a lovely cream tea which was much appreciated by all

Our commander, David A, convened the meeting at 1930hrs on Monday 6th June and reported that the Chairman had sent apologies for his absence. He had a sort of excuse; he went fishing in France. Apologies were also made for the absence of a speaker this month but, to compensate for this an arrangement has been made by John B to visit the Bentwaters Cold War Museum next month. There was a universal vote of acceptance among the crew for this opportunity; details will be posted on the website: https://sites.google.com/view/wnas-uk/home To compensate further for the disappointments, the commander announced that a number of film recordings had been made available. The most popular choice was the story of the WW2 Mosquito, a rival in popularity to the Spitfire, the Hurricane and the Lancaster. Some would say it out-performed the latter three challengers; the film certainly demonstrated the Mosquito’s versatility: with a lightweight wooden fuselage, twin Merlin engines, and a two man crew, the aeroplane duelled as a bomber and a fighter.

It had the ability to fly higher, lower and faster than its contemporaries: higher and faster to escape enemy threats and lower to avoid radar detection when flying at ground level and releasing bombs directly into many Nazi headquarters throughout Europe. Archive footage showed that much of this destruction occurred in 1943; an interesting experience for one or two of our members who were born in the same year; a touch of fake nostalgia perhaps. (It’s interesting to note that in a recent Google/Android blog by Botany One there are limited citations recording evidence of the types of wood used for the manufacture of the Mosquito fusilage; there’s a tease. It could be that some of our crew are old enough to remember). An Enigma for Probus t
t
t
r j t
At a recent meeting of Thetford Probus, Mike Wickens discussed the Allies’ response to the Nazis’ use of Enigma machines to send encrypted messages between their forces during World War 2. Although Allied listening stations heard the messages, they needed decryption before giving useful information. The simplest encryption is to change A to B, B to C, etc or A to C, etc, so that CITY would become DJUZ or EKVA. If you know what had been done, the message can be read, but you can also use trial and error as there are only 25 alternatives. Enigma was much cleverer: an electric typewriter with 3 rotors, chosen from a group of 5, each of which could be set in 26 positions, with a current flowing from the key through the rotors to light a lamp showing the first letter of the encrypted message. The rotors moved as each letter was typed, eventually encrypting the whole message. There are now over 1 million possible setups, making trial and error virtually impossible. Extra wiring attached to the machine’s circuits and extra rotors could increase the figure to almost 160 million million million. Trying each possibility for just 1 second would take longer than the Universe has existed! At Bletchley Park, Alan Turing and Gordon Welchman knew that machines like their Bombe were the only way to decrypt these

messages and Tommy Flowers, Bill Tutte and others developed Colossus, “the world’s first computer” for the same purpose, reducing the length of the war by an estimated two years. Do you fancy joining us at Probus? Contact our Secretary at: john.bet@btinternet.com

The Annual Open Day has been running since 2004 and allows veterans, families and anyone who wishes to commemorate the only time in its history, that the 7th Armoured Division (The Desert Rats) was in the UK. Having been formed in the deserts of Egypt, where it fought its first battles, it travelled to Italy before returning to the UK to prepare for the Normandy Invasion in June 1944, here in Norfolk. After sailing at the start of June 1944, the Division has never returned to these shores. This annual memorial day allows people to remember the sacrifices of past generations who wore the Desert Rat on their arm, in WW2 and conflicts since and continue to do so in the modern era. Anyone attending will be able to see vintage military vehicles, plus visit trade stands and the museum. You can also observe the service of remembrance and see the marching band. Volunteer Award For Community Stalwart

490 volunteers have been crowned ‘Platinum Champions’ by the Duchess of Cornwall and amongst them is Thetfordian, Barbara Bysouth. The Duchess of Cornwall headed a star studded judging panel that included Alex Jones from the One Show, Gethin Jones from Morning Live, Felicity Kendall, Elaine Paige, Myleene Klass and TV presenter and wheelchair basketball player, Ade Adepitan. Speaking about the awards the Duchess said, “The Platinum Champions Awards launched by the Royal Voluntary Service in honour of Her Majesty the Queen’s 70 years of service, have given us the opportunity to celebrate the remarkable contribution of all volunteers, who truly are the backbone of our country. Congratulations to all our Platinum Champions – and my heartfelt thanks to you and to the millions of volunteers across the UK who give their time and talents so generously.” Catherine Johnstone, Chief Executive of Royal Voluntary Service, said, “Our judging panel rose to the challenge, selecting 490 Platinum Jubilee Champions from thousands of inspirational stories and dizzying achievements, spanning all corners of the UK. We are extremely proud of and grateful to all the Platinum Champions, each one has shown selflessness beyond measure, sheer brilliance and boundless energy. We are thrilled to see so
many phenomenal volunteers commended.” All 490 winners have received a specially designed pin badge and a certificate signed by the Duchess of Cornwall. The Platinum Champions Awards were organised by the Royal Voluntary Service, of which the Duchess is president, to celebrate the 70-year reign of the Queen, who is patron of the charity. Barbara was one of two hand-picked volunteers from the Breckland area to be given the award, after thousands of people aged from 16 to 101 from all over the UK were nominated. She was nominated by her brother Andrew and daughter Christina who said, “As a family we are incredibly proud of Mum. We laugh each time we visit that we can’t go anywhere without her stopping to talk to someone she has helped so it’s lovely to see the important part she plays in the community and so many people’s lives honoured in this award. Mum has the community at the heart of everything she does in her day to day life. Through her kindness and generosity, she supports many charities in the work she performs daily and makes a real difference by enriching and enhancing the lives of the community.” Barbara has made a significant difference to the local community via her commitment, generosity and inspirational leadership. She’s been involved with a huge number of projects over the years from running preschool sessions to supporting fundraising activities for local foodbanks and litter picking. She has made a difference by providing families with experiences they would not normally be able to afford and has encouraged others to join the community events and become volunteers. Her friend and fellow volunteer, Helen Kittlety said she first met Barbara when she supported her family, “She is the most generous, kind, warm, big-hearted friend that I’ve ever had. She started working with my children and then pulled me in. She’s everyone’s Auntie Barbara. It was because of Barbara that I ended up working in a school. She helped me believe in myself.” Having lived in the town on the Barnham Cross Estate since moving here with her family in the 1960s, Barbara is one of those people who helps because she can and wants to, without seeking any recognition, and has been doing this for many years. If there’s a job to be done to support the community, you’ll usually find Barbara there. Barbara has been known to take over 100 people to the circus when it comes to town, she leads an environment club in two infant and primary schools and twice a week you’ll find her volunteering in

Until her recent retirement Barbara worked at Diamond Academy, having started her connection with the school as a parent governor many years before. She has been involved in Fulmerston Family Project and continues the work of Thetford Community Association as a volunteer. When the news of her award came through Barbara said she was completely taken aback and had no idea she’d been nominated. Congratulating Barbara on her award, Charles Burrell Centre CEO, Nik Chapman said, “I have only known Barbara for 18 months but in that time, I have been inspired and humbled by the contribution that she has made to the community through her volunteering and many projects over many years. Barbara is one of Thetford’s treasures. This is exemplified in the personal stories from those she has helped or given opportunity to whether a first trip to the seaside or the pleasure of learning how to cook. She reflects what is best about this community, compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain simple love for fellow human beings. She is an exemplar for us all to aspire to. We salute and thank her.”

We are part of a river litter citizen science project which tracks how micro plastics get into our food chain and the North Sea. This is a tiny caddisfly nymph which has built its A Caddisfly nymph casing using a bit of blue with micro plastic plastic that was dumped into the river. So please, this summer let‘s enjoy our lovely refreshing rivers and have fun without leaving any litter on the ground or in the river. It is home to hundreds of different creatures – some of them are tiny!

We have had great support from the local community in the past, and that helped us to buy safety equipment like buoyancy aids but these have a limited life span of five years, and we are getting to the point when they will be out of date very soon. We need to replace some of our safety kit, like life jackets so we are asking if anyone can support us, even with a small a donation. Here is our Go Fund Me link: www.gofund.me/321d70f9

Two species of gull now breed in Thetford town; the Herring Gull and the Lesser Black-backed Gull. Both are large, white-headed species and have a fearsome reputation in seaside resorts and cities as noisy predators and scavengers.
However, it may come as a surprise for you to hear that these species are of conservation concern (falling numbers led to the Herring Gull being added to the Birds of Conservation Concern Red List in 2009, while the Lesser Black-backed Gull is on the Amber List), and are struggling to thrive in their natural coastal habitats. In the winter, Thetford attracts rare gulls. In previous winters, unusual species included Caspian Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Iceland Gull and Glaucous Gull, some of which come from as far away as the Baltic and Russia. Yet, should we be encouraging Thetford’s gulls or trying to control them before they too are regarded as pests? As intelligent species, they are of course capitalizing on available nesting sites and food to feed not only themselves, but also their chicks. Many of the gulls roost and nest on the flat rooftops of the industrial estates, which provide them with a perfect, predator-free habitat. In recent years, gulls have started nesting on people’s homes; Lesser Black-backed Gulls in particular can be found on estates most of the time now, during the summer. In my opinion, our gulls currently co-exist with us harmoniously, yet I appreciate they are noisy and can act aggressively when they perceive danger to their offspring. Individual gulls learn to specialise on particular feeding methods, so we mustn’t encourage birds to specialise on our sandwiches and ice creams being enjoyed by Thetfordians in the summer months. We can do this by not leaving leftover food in places gulls can easily access, like on tables outside or next to litter bins, and also by not feeding the gulls in public places. If food is being left out in your garden for smaller birds, consider using a bird feeder off the ground.
Gulls are fascinating birds. At the BTO, we have used GPS tags to track individual Lesser Blackbacked Gulls nesting in East Anglia to as far away as Mauritania in winter! Given how much of our wildlife is in trouble due to human activities, perhaps we in Thetford could set an example? Instead of engaging in conflict with them, we could find a way to live alongside our local gulls and show other towns and cities how proud we are to welcome so many different species throughout the year. For more information on gulls and BTO research, see the website: www.bto.org/understanding-birds/articles/ gulls-allowed Emily Cuff, Training Officer, BTO

Don’t Be Fuelish! ‘
‘Fossil Fuels’ - pretty much a dirty word these days; and fills me with guilt and dread as I need to use petrol to get to work and gas to heat my house, all the while contributing to the exacerbation of climate change which I actively campaign against.
I
I’m sure many people feel the same and are unsure what they can do to mitigate their impact, so here are a few little wins:
•
• Get radiator thermostats and only heat the rooms you use
•
• Turn the heat down a couple of degrees and put on a thick cosy jumper; and maybe a throw or two on the sofa to snuggle into with the TV
•
• If you need a new oven, change to electric
•
• Car share where you can, and only use the car when you must and plan your trips to minimise mileage
•
• Use public transport. Lobby your MP for better, affordable local transport
•
• If you need to replace your car, consider electric Pretty obvious options even if a little inconvenient. But here’s one I bet you haven’t considered –

• Change your Bank account to an Ethical investor Did you know that the majority of our High Street Banks invest heavily in fossil fuels with the UK’s top five banks providing around £220bn in finance for fossil fuel projects from 2016 to 2020, and your money is helping them! If we all transferred our accounts, pensions and investments to ethical providers then they wouldn’t have the money to support the fossil fuel industry. And here’s another thing I’m fairly certain you won't know anything about - Schlumberger. The world's largest oilfield services company, providing oil and gas extraction technologies to fossil fuel companies including Shell and BP. It operates in 85 countries and, it’s Schlumberger Gould Research Centre in Cambridge (deep connections to University of Cambridge), has developed some of the industry's most harmful technologies: Arctic exploration, deep-sea drilling, tar sands, fracking and "re-fracking". Support For Dog Owners f

Emily Bright is a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, freelance writer and trainer/owner at Bright Dog Training. Emily has always been interested in how dogs think and was fortunate to grow up with several dogs – mainly terriers in both breed and character! After gaining her first postgraduate mental health qualification, Emily decided to bite the bullet. After all, working as a therapist not only gives her excellent skills to coach and give emotional support to dog owners, but there are similarities with training dogs too.
Sea To Chalk: Restoring Sea Trout And Eels This project led by the Brecks, Fen Edge & Rivers Landscape Partnership will see the removal of in-river structures and create fish passes on the River Lark to enable the free flow of native wild brown trout and other river species. It also provides a unique opportunity for six schools within the BFER scheme to learn about the local significance of European Eels, life cycle, habitat and role in the aquatic food chain. The Schools including Drake Primary, Barnham CEVC Primary and Forest Academy will be provided with specialist lessons and fish tanks to raise young eels in the classroom, with a river visit to release them into the River Lark. The aims of this project include improved fish and eel passages, restoring eels to the rivers within the scheme area, engaging young people with their native wildlife, as well as a way of facilitating learning and raising awareness of how people’s actions can impact the water system and how they can help improve water quality in their local area. Sea trout and eels are iconic species in Brecks rivers and indicators of their health. For more information visit: www.brecks.org

The main catalyst of Emily’s interest in working with dogs was her Belgian Shepherd, who had every behavioural problem under the sun. Emily has an empathic and non-judgemental approach. She has student membership of the International Society of Animal Professionals (ISAP) and is currently completing a level 5 diploma in Canine Behaviour. She has also engaged with training from the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers (IMDT). Emily is also a member of The Dog Welfare Alliance (DWA) and International Companion Animal Network (ICAN) force-free, positive training organisations. Emily has cared for and trained dogs at a large rescue shelter for 3 years, working with problems from kennel stress to stranger and dog aggression. She is passionate about using modern reward based and force-free training methods. Emily is currently based in Norfolk/Suffolk and offers 121 coaching both virtually and in person. A free assessment questionnaire is completed before the first session to make the most of the time in-session. The Benefits Of Neutering
t
i ' t il i t t t

We recently had a female cat come into our care who had a litter of 5 kittens. When the kittens were weaned, the other went to our vets to be neutered. The cat was collected from the vet later in the day and apparently she had an abnormal uterus and polycystic ovaries, which is very unusual in a cat. Polycystic ovaries are caused by hormonal changes in the female's reproductive tract, and the vet was surprised that the cat had delivered 5 healthy kittens. Another condition that can occur in cats and more usually in dogs is pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus and is considered to be a life threatening condition that must be treated quickly and aggressively. Following estrous or 'heat' progesterone levels remain elevated for several weeks, stimulating the uterus lining to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur for several estrous cycles, the lining continues to increase in thickness until cysts are formed in the uterus. The condition is called cystic endometrial hyperplasia. The thickened cystic lining secretes fluids that create an ideal environment in which bacteria can grow. Additionally the high levels of progesterone inhibit the ability of the muscles in the wall of the uterus to contract and expel accumulated fluids or bacteria. Another contributing factor is that during estrous, white blood cells which normally protect against infection are inhibited from entering the uterus. This normal occurrence allows sperm to safely enter the female's reproductive tract without being damaged or destroyed by these white blood cells. The combination of these factors often lead to infection. Pyometra may occur in any sexually intact young to middle aged cat, but it is most common in older cats, that have been in heat within the previous 4 weeks. The clinical signs depend on whether the cervix remains open. If it is open, pus will drain from the uterus through the vagina to the outside. If the cervix is closed, the pus is unable to drain and collects in the uterus causing distension of the abdomen. The bacteria release toxins that are absorbed into the circulation and the cat becomes severely ill very rapidly. The preferred treatment is to remove the uterus and ovaries by performing a spay or neuter of the female cat. Cats diagnosed in the early stages of the disease are very good surgical candidates. If they are not diagnosed until they are quite ill, then the procedure is more complicated and a longer period of hospitalisation may be needed. Antibiotics are usually given for up to 2 weeks after surgery. This can be a very costly time.
Neutering your cat can prevent a number of conditions and avoid costly vet treatments
To avoid all this suffering it is best to have your cat neutered as soon as it is big enough – usually by 4 months of age when it weighs 2 kgs. That goes for male cats too as they are prone to other diseases if left unneutered.
t
If you need help or advice, or assistance in the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. You can also see more information on our Facebook page: @Breckland-Cats-Protection or drop us an email: enquiries@breckland.cats.org.uk

Voices, Please l ʻ f

After a hugely enjoyable Spring course, which has left George Ezraʼs ʻBudapestʼ and Bugsy Maloneʼs ʻBad Guysʼ as ubiquitous ear-worms, Thetford Voices is now getting ready for August 9th & 10th and its two day programme of Open Workshops for 6 – 18 year olds. Sing, rehearse, perform, with a closing concert for guests, families and friends: all enthusiastic young singers are welcome, working with experienced leaders and our regular DBS-checked support team, as Thetford Voices enters its fifteenth year. This yearʼs theme of ‘Journeysʼ Ends’ means we shall be singing of both finishing and starting out on journeys, tasks and adventures of all kinds. Lord of the Rings and the Voyage of the Mayflower are just two sources but weʼll draw on music from many places and many times in a variety of styles - folk, pop, show tune, ballad and anthem, round and part-song, composed for children, borrowed from grown-ups...
(and there is an extra session of harmony singing for those aged 15 and above). The unique course timing (first day 9.30am – 3.40pm but the second day 1.30pm - 8.15pm) helps even the youngest to manage their energies and concentration over the two days and sign off with the jubilant closing performance that has been the feature of that fifteen year history.
So now we are looking for a new generation of young singers to join our regulars and help us refresh and reboot after the complications of the last couple of years. Fees have been kept at £5 Our aim is to provide an enjoyable and satisfying a day. Come and join us! Give singing together experience for first timers and more experienced a try. During lockdown, Daniel spent his time writing new songs and knew he needed a bigger and bolder sound. Since then has has collaborated with Jake Webb and Paul Burkett, two talented Thetford musicians. Lead guitarist Jake worked with Daniel on his first EP, offered his skills as a bass guitarist as well as lead guitar. Paul, a previous band mate with Jake, is a skilled drummer and was keen to help bring that bolder sound to the new tracks. On April 29th this year they released their first track called Boring or Ugly which was played on BBC Radio Suffolk on the BBC Introducing Show on 14th May. More recently, on 25th June their second single Cruel and Crazy World was released with more music to follow later this year. Daniel says that Cruel and Crazy World is about trying to make it as a musician at an older age and breaking the mould of having to be in your teens or early twenties to be in the music industry. The video for Cruel and Crazy World was filmed in the Carnegie, the area around Melford Bridge and The Albion, it features James Trayton and Frankie Soan from Thetford Players fame. Cruel and Crazy World is available to download and stream on all music platforms including Spotify, Amazon Music and Apple Music. Baking Masterclass For Families Soundly Fostering’s children and families all met up at the beginning of June and experienced baking in a professional kitchen. Tracy from the Burrell Kitchen gave everyone a master class in baking Jubilee Cupcakes. t r
t f
Everyone joined in mixing, baking and making their own cakes. We found that we have some real talent in the kitchen. Some of the boys were great at piping red, white and blue icing and the youngest twins, used lots of pretty sprinkles. Everyone’s cakes were delicious! Not only did we get to make and eat cake, but foster parents all had a chance to chat and catch up. After lunch, Soundly Fostering treated them to a relaxation class with Senara and the children had a taster martial arts class with Kuk Sool Won of Thetford. Everyone learnt new skills and some young people have decided to come back and carry on with martial arts. Our foster parents do lots of things with the children when they are at home and it’s fantastic to have family days out together having fun. If you would like to foster with us, feel free to pick up the phone or pop in for a chat. For more information, telephone Soundly Fostering on 01842 818793 or email: info@soundlyfostering.co.uk

Summer Reading Challenge l r I i I i i

The Summer Reading Challenge 2022 will be launching in Norfolk Libraries on Saturday 23rd July. It’s free, it’s fun, it builds confidence and supports children reading for pleasure. Children’s reading can ‘dip’ during the long summer break making it harder for them on returning to school. In addition, reading for pleasure has so many proven benefits including developing empathy by identifying with characters and improving mental wellbeing. This year the theme is Gadgeteers. It has been produced by the Reading Agency in partnership with the Science Museum Group and is a celebration of science and innovation. It will be delivered by Norfolk Library and Information Service and there will be lots of exciting activities in your local libraries. Over 700,000 children sign up to the challenge every year. You can sign your children up at your local library from the 23rd July. To join the challenge children will need to be a library member. This is free of charge and children will receive their own library card for which there are no overdue fees. Children will be given their Gadgeteers pack, have the opportunity to be involved in lots of fun, free activities and get to set their own reading challenge (we recommend six books over the six-week period).
Children choose their own books which can include e-books from our virtual library. The children will collect stickers along the way and on completion of the challenge they will receive a medal and a certificate of achievement. There is a digital platform too, so the fun can carry on at home! Children can take part in the Challenge at: www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk To find our more about Thetford Library events visit: www.libraries.norfolk.gov.uk/whats-on

As we write this, we’ve had some incredibly warm days and our thoughts turn once again to events. We’re thrilled to have been asked to host two author events as part of the final day of the Festival of East Anglia and Punjab. On Sunday 10th July, we’ll be open especially for this event and will naturally have the authors’ books available for sale. Scam Awareness And The Cost Of Living Crisis f il
With the cost-of-living crisis, many people are facing difficult financial situations, including not being able to afford essential goods and services, and at risk of getting into debt. Scammers are likely to exploit those in vulnerable situations, so it’s important that we raise awareness and empower consumers to protect themselves and others from scams. Some examples of scams to look out for include:
• l
• Scammers pretending to be energy companies, luring people with “too good to be true” deals in order to steal their money
•
• Fake sales representatives selling counterfeit shopping vouchers
•
• Fraudsters sending out phishing emails - usually pretending to offer an energy rebate or other government support to obtain people’s personal information.

‘Operation Protect’ Launched I
l l
• l •
The weather is finally picking up and the holiday season is well and truly with us. With this in mind I would like to offer some advice on how we can all protect ourselves from becoming victims of burglaries. I am pleased to be able to advise you that burglaries in Norfolk have been steadily declining in recent years and the county has the second lowest burglary rate in the country. However, as the summer months arrive, we do see an increase in these types of offences as people spend more time outside and homes are left unsecure with doors or windows being left open or unlocked. In June Norfolk Constabulary launched its Operation Protect, a campaign designed to reduce burglary offences even further and to catch and lock up burglars. Most burglaries are committed by opportunist thieves who will search a neighbourhood for homes that look empty or dark, with access to back gardens or with windows that have been left open or doors unlocked. To help reduce the chance of becoming a victim of a burglary remember: • Lock all doors and remove the keys before leaving the house. • Keep front doors locked even when you are home and especially if you are in the back garden.
• Close all windows before you leave the house. • Leave low-energy lights on timers • Keep your valuables, jewellery, cash and all important documents in a safe. • Never leave spare keys in an open place. • Don’t over-share on social media that you are going to be away from home. If you have any information about stolen property or burglary offences you can contact the police on 101 or report online at: www.norfolk.police.uk. If you prefer you can also contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or by visiting their website: www.crimestoppers-uk.org PC Paula Gilluley Community Engagement, Norfolk Constabulary

Wow! What a month June was at the Charles Burrell Centre and in Thetford generally – such a huge amount of community spirit shown at all of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Thanks must go to all staff and volunteers at CBC for the planning and running of the fabulously fun 5K Run and the delicious Big Jubilee Lunch. We saw about 300 people on that particular Sunday and were blown away by the laughter and happy faces. Thanks to all who attended – you made our day. Thank you also to Zumba Lou, Chris Riches and family, and UPP for the support on the day, it’s great to have you joining in with our events.
