Another success story… MORE SOLD BOARDS than any other agent! We are incredibly proud to have once again won the coveted claim of MORE SOLD SIGNS THAN ANY OTHER AGENT in Thetford. Rarely is this claim won with such a dominant market share. 37% of the SOLD boards displayed were Chilterns boards. Andrew Overman (Manager) commented, “The team have worked incredibly hard to establish such market dominance. We had as many sold boards displayed as our second and third placed competitors combined!” According to RightmoveIntel (the platform offered by rightmove.co.uk to agents to monitor and track performance) Chilterns also have Highest success rates (highest percentage of stock sold) Most sales agreed (of any agent in IP24) Fewest reductions (proving accuracy and honesty of valuation) Speediest sales (shortest time on market of any agent in IP24) More property views (more portal views means greater exposure!)

Shadwell Bids Farewell To Martin Having always wanted to work with horses, Martin Wixey started his career as a stud hand, working with mares foaling at night. Over the years he worked his way up to become Estate Manager and has just retired after 28 years at Shadwell. Martin has helped with a number of local events over the years including the school painting competition ensuring the animal sculptures are delivered for decorating and judging and the Anglo Sikh Cricket Match. Just before he retired Martin took an afternoon out to give About Thetford a special tour of the estate. Purchased in 1984 from Sir John Musker, the estate employs around 180 people and covers approximately 6,000 acres. Livestock personnel live on the estate as the foals with their mothers receive 24 hour care for the first six months of their lives. Along with the stud the estate hosts private shooting events and the landscape
alongside stallions, broodmares and foals. The estate also includes a commercial forest and a tenanted farm along with the Shadwell Court where scenes from Stardust were filmed. After being responsible for such a large estate including the specialised equestrian areas, Martin is now moving to the Norfolk coast to KB Roofing.qxp_Layout 1 13/06/2017 enjoy a slightly quieter life! Gardens Wow for The 11th Year Over 600 people from Thetford and as far away as Lincolnshire enjoyed visiting 30 gardens across Thetford on Sunday 25th June. Organiser Rachel Woods was delighted at the turn out, “It’s a phenomenal day in terms of the feel good factor for the people of Thetford and a great charity to support. Everyone involved has worked really hard to make sure all the visitors enjoyed the gardens. Without the support from them and our sponsors we wouldn’t have the event that we do. There are so many people to thank, it’s impossible to name everyone, but I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped, sponsored and supported.”
showcases front gardens, year on year these entries are becoming more popular and are some of the most inspirational spaces. Opening for the first time in Monksgate, Matt Soane had his parents on hand to explain how they’ve used sand bags to create height and interest whilst developing a rockery in the large open space at the front of his property. During the morning Ben from Lawsons teamed up with Jake and Gemma from Thetford’s Great Information Centre to sell on the day programmes at the market place. They were delighted to have been spotted by staff in Wetherspoons who appeared with coffee to keep the team refreshed and encouraged their customers to pop a few pennies in the donation tin. Lawsons, along with many businesses in the town have been long term sponsors. Another sponsor, Thetford Garden Centre reported record sales of brochures by Johanna on Sunday, who ran out twice! To discuss opening your garden next year, e-mail Rachel Woods via: rwiad@talktalk.net
Rachel, along with fellow organisers Suzanne Norman and Susie Dowling have been busy co-ordinating the 11th annual Thetford Open Gardens which included 14 new gardens this year. Rachel continued, “Suzanne’s cakes are so popular that you could barely move round her garden as it was full of people eating cake and having tea! Susie also had a successful day serving lunch, her quiche sold out and one visitor on enquiring if the quiche was homemade, then asked Susie to marry him as it was the best quiche he’d ever had!” Food plays a huge part in Thetford’s Open Garden offer, from bacon butties in the morning to lunch at Boscombe House and Riversmeet. Across the event a variety of food and drink was on offer from Wine tasting, Pimms to Rum Punch, homemade cakes, Eton Mess and jelly and ice-cream.

Be Part Of It This Summer As VW Whitenoise Returns For Another Year
Event organizer Lucy said, “We are a local couple and bought our first VW Camper back in 2001. We currently own a ’71 early bay called Mrs Butterworth, a ’71 Fiat 124 called the ‘Grandad car’ and are starting to transform a battered, Danish MKP Smutti caravan, hence the introduction of the new ‘Otherness’ car show competition for 2017, on the Saturday, to include more diverse retro motors. We grew up camping and love good music and theatre and spend all year planning the show in every moment of our spare time.”
Established over 15 years ago and the first VW and music festival in Norfolk, VW WhiteNoise has always been very family friendly and also welcomes well behaved pooches. In true festival style there is an array of diverse, affordable food available every year, alongside a fantastic line up of music on four stages, including local rapper Franko Fraize and headliners Beach Boys UK, The Allergies and DJ Cheeba.
From the quirky custom bicycle competition and battle for the new ‘Otherness’ trophies (open to VAG, Rods, Custom and Retro) on the Saturday to the final day of VW Whitenoise which culminates with an impressive ‘show n shine’ attracting hundreds of motoring competitors. Top notch examples of the best loved and rare VWs – from Split screens to Karmann Ghias, to top class modern day VW Golfs, T4s and T5s are all on display. There are rewards for Best Rod, wildest ride and Furthest Travelled judged from an eclectic mix of vehicles and this is a must see for car fans.
Entertainment includes the Woodland Folk Music Stage, the Garlic Theatre Company Puppetry magic, Aerialism workshops and free activities for children in Planet Kids. The popular eclectic trade village will be back with an array of stalls selling everything from hats to VW parts. One of the reviews from last year’s festival summed up the spirit of VW Whitenoise, “I really loved this festival. It was so retro the bands were great the fairground had something for everyone (the Wall of Death was amazing good value) I had a hot shower every day and the toilets were cleaned every morning! And the sun shone every day” Lou Lou Norwich.
Earlybird tickets are available from Leaping Hare in store at King Street office or www.leapinghare.org

Out & About Thetford
Norwich Road Academy unveils new nursery On a hot sunny morning, invited guests
joined local dignitaries to officially open the newest building at one of Thetford’s oldest schools. Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Dennis Crawford was joined by Principal Tracey Thurlby and School Ambassadors James and Katy for the ribbon cutting ceremony. Designed and built by Net Zero Buildings, the new nursery is a ’Schollhaus’ design featuring a solar PV roof and has a negative carbon emission rating. This new eco build is so energy efficient that it will have no impact on the school’s running costs. Chair of Governors, Caroline Foot said, “We now have a brand new purpose built building and can offer a bigger nursery provision in the middle of town. Children can start here at 3 and stay all the way through to senior school.” Fellow Governor, Stuart Wright added, “As a former pupil it’s lovely to see the investment into the school and to see it built for the future as the school has been a part of the history of the town.” Once inside, despite the heat outside, the nursery was beautifully cool with a large classroom, kitchen, toilets and changing area. The current nursery and reception class entertained delighted visitors by performing a selection of nursery rhymes and actions. Several of the visitors were prospective pupils including Scarlet & Bayley who were busy trying out the new equipment. The twins mum Sherri told Karen, “I have a friend who has children here, it’s really nice, the twins look happy and I like the new building.” To find out more about the nursery provision go to www.norwichroad.attrust.org.uk
Friends of Thetford Museum visit Sutton Hoo A bequest from former Friends Chair John
Rogers enabled a large group, including the Mayor Cllr Dennis Crawford, to visit one of the country’s best archaeological sites. John was a very keen supporter of the Ancient House Museum and enjoyed taking groups on tours of the town’s archaeology sites such as the Priory. Dr Keith Robinson, the current Chair suggested Sutton Hoo as a suitable site for the visit. The group were able to explore the Exhibition Hall, Tranmer House and the grounds before hearing the story of Edith Pretty and enjoying a special guided tour of the burial mounds. Maggie Findlay, Treasurer and organiser said, “We decided to organise the excursion for half term so some of our family members could join us. It’s been a lovely trip and we’re now considering a trip to Kings Lynn Heritage Quarter next year.” A vote of thanks to John and the committee was given by the Mayor at the end of the day. Friends membership is available at Ancient House Reception or Thetford’s Great Information Centre. Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

Lily celebrates her milestone birthday in style Alexander Court resident Lily Simpson reached
her 100th birthday recently and marked the occasion with a surprise trip in a horse drawn carriage before enjoying a family lunch with her grandchildren. Lily Read was born in Maidenhead during WW1, the youngest of 14 children. On leaving school she worked in her local Woolworths, which she says she loved. She met her late husband John at a dance in London and married him during the early years of WW2. John was away fighting in the army and Lily played a part in the war effort working in ammunition factories. Eventually they settled in East Anglia before moving to Thetford around 20 years ago. Lily has lived in Alexander Court for 3 years and has become a firm favourite with the staff. A delighted Lily received a card from the Queen and Lorna Thompson created a special horse themed birthday cake as Lily’s daughter Tina works in Newmarket. Save The Children Den Day at TGS The younger pupils at Thetford Grammar School discovered the importance of having a home by taking part in a Save The Children initiative. Den Day encourages children to learn about the importance of shelter and raise money to help change lives across the world. Boxes were donated by Simon Long Removals and Tesco. Lydia, aged 4 in EYFS explained, “They are building a den and I am helping. It’s good inside the den and cosy.” Working together in their house teams led by the year 6 House Captains, the children had to make a den that they could sit inside and eat their snack. Nicki Peace, Head of Prep School said, “It’s about teamwork and overcoming challenges, and about empathising with other people who may not be as fortunate as they are.” Ailish in year 5 told Karen, “It’s quite fun and exciting, it’s a bit of team work, independent work and also a great opportunity to raise money for Save The Children.” Senior School pupils were invited to view the dens and give feedback once the dens were finished before Head of DT, Heather Pringle judged the dens on stability, longevity and design. For more information go to denday@savethechildren.org.uk
And finally….. As part of our commitment to helping Thetford
become a Dementia Friendly Town, Karen was delighted to meet the first resident at the new Redgate House Residential Home on National Care Home Open Day. Audrey was enjoying a few days respite care and looking forward to meeting the second resident to arrive on the following Monday. Manager Tessa Bramley told Karen that Audery had been enjoying watering the plants in the garden, having her nails painted and was looking forward to a visit to the shops to stock up on chocolate! If you have an event you would like Karen to cover, please send your request to karen@aboutthetfordmagazine.co.uk

In Good Company With U3A Thetford U3A is proud to be part of the Tackling Loneliness campaign run by Norfolk County Council. The key message is that no one should spend a lonely day in Norfolk if they don’t want to. Alleviating loneliness can help people lead independent, happier and healthier lives, for longer. Thetford U3A has monthly talks (the next one is on Thursday 27th July, 1.45pm, Carnegie Room, when Judith Muncella will tell us about The Lighter Side of Life) and many activities for retired and semi-retired people catering for all tastes and abilities: languages, sports, science, games, crafts, history, travel and more. The emphasis is on having fun, making friends, learning from each other, enjoying life and keeping active. You can try any group before joining so why not have a go? This is what our members say: 'As I live alone, I have ready access to like-minded people' ; 'It helped me through the period after the death of my dear husband'; 'Coming to a new area, the U3A has been a saviour as I have met friendly people'; 'As a recently retired person, the U3A activities help me get out of the house'.

Thetford Rotarians Raise Money For Good Causes On Saturday 2nd June The Rotary Club of Thetford, held their Annual Charity Concert in the Carnegie Rooms, Thetford. Performed by the Royal Air Force Honington Voluntary Band the theme was ‘The Life and Times of David and Anne Croft’. Ticket sales were strong and it was heartening to see many members of the Croft family in the audience. The Director of Music, Tom Milford gave a potted history of the Crofts ranging from their early work right through to the collaboration with Jimmy Perry on David’s latter-day successes with Dads Army and other family favourites. The informative narrations were accompanied by slide and video material and interspersed with music from their many shows. All in all a very successful event which raised in excess of a £1000 for local charities. Finally the President of the Rotary Club of Thetford thanked the Honington Band for their performance and the audience for supporting the event. Later in the month Rotary and Inner Wheel held a “Race Night” at Great Hockham Village Hall raising a further £1,400 Current and past members of the club and their wives bid a fond farewell to Brian Boughton at a special Lunch at the Thomas Paine Hotel. He has spent more than sixty years in Thetford Rotary Club and has decided that the time has come when he can no longer make regular attendances at Club Meetings. He was presented with a scroll to commemorate those sixty years by President Gary Goodchild.

Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses
Amnesty International Thetford group has a meeting on 13th July at 6.30pm in the Bell Hotel lounge. New members are always welcome. We are ordinary people from across the world standing up for humanity and human rights. One of our human rights’ actions this month is to demand a retrial for 2 surviving boys 15 and 17, (of 7 boys) in Somalia – they were arrested, locked in shipping containers, violently tortured and face life in prison after forced confessions. Five other boys (from a minority ethnic group), aged between 14 and 17, were executed after confessions forced under torture. There was no objective evidence of their guilt. The action link can be found at:
Lioness Dorothy and Lioness Karren attended the Felixstowe 29th Certification Anniversary Lunch held at the Holiday Inn Ipswich-Orwell. It was an opportunity for Lionesses to reconnect and to acknowledge past achievements. Following a good meal and speeches, Martin Walklate gave an entertaining talk about fraud. Lioness Gillian thanked everyone for attending. Also.... Lioness President Sheila hosted a Mad Hatter Evening recently. Good food and company ensured an enjoyable social time. Lioness Lesley challenged our knowledge on hat related topics. Money was raised for Macmillan Cancer Care. Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at Kings Court. New members are welcome; for details please 1st Choice Locksmiths _Layout 1 09/12/2015 12:40 P contact Dorothy on 0845 8334764.
http://bit.ly/2tEWHBG We are also getting ready to mark AI Thetford Group’s 10th anniversary next month! In September as part of Amnesty's "I welcome" campaign we will be showing in the town a photographic exhibition providing a striking insight into global refugee crises over the last 70 years. Powerful images from the famous Magnum photographers collective reveal what it means to be a refugee - to be forced to flee your home, to face danger, upheaval, uncertainty, violence, even death, in a desperate bid to find a place of safety.

Today's refugee crisis appears to be a vast, intractable problem. No one wants to take responsibility for the 21 million people who have fled their country. Probus Members Hear of Stanta Significance Making sure that the Stanta Battle Area near Thetford is fit for purpose falls to a small team of army and civilian personnel explained Lt Colonel (Retd) Tony Powell MBE in his talk. Lt Colonel Powell’s job as deputy commander of Defence Infrastructure covers all similar facilities in the Eastern region stretching from the River Humber to the Thames. “The job of our team is delivery of safe and compliant training places, which are safe for military personnel and the public.” What makes Stanta so special is not just its size, the UKs third largest training area for the British Army but also it is unique in being the only one not accessible to the public, although its distinctive landscape has been seen by millions in television’s Dad’s Army. Stanta began with controversy and drama. In 1942, during World War II, there was an urgent need for all-arms battle training area; residents in four villages and two hamlets were given just three weeks to evacuate their homes to make way for the military. Little did they know that they would never return. Some remains of the ghost villages can still been seen including the churches. One church features the outstanding work of ecclesiastical architect Pugin, who designed the Houses of Parliament. As the English villages, one was modelled on a typical German village and more recently villages like those found in Iraq and Afghanistan have been constructed. Troops are able to experience the environments they will experience before they go into theatres of conflict.
Actors including Arthur Lowe, John Le Mesurier, John Laurie and Clive Dunn on set for filming an episode of Dads Army - a number of episodes were filmed at the Stanta battleground near Thetford. Photo by BBC are another aspect of the battle area with everything from butterflies, moths to otters thriving alongside the thousands of troops who train there every year. Probus Chairman Gerald Goucher expressed thanks to the speaker and member David Wood added praise for the talk which he was the clearest and best he had Powerclean QPsaid Portrait Advert_Layout 1 23/02/2017 14 heard of the battle area’s history.

Speaker Provides Euston Estate Insight The June meeting of the Thetford Society began with a resume of upcoming social events and the fact that we are in our 25th year as a society. Mike Brindle made a request for any article relating to a significant anniversary which could be used in our next magazine. Our Speaker was Andrew Blenkiron the Estate Director at Euston. He gave us a fascinating insight into the history, day to day running and future plans for the Duke of Grafton’s ancestral seat. Andrew explained the many challenges that he faces as the Director, which include ensuring the 17th century hall (pictured) is maintained as a family home. There are many wide ranging activities which take part on the estate. In farming alone, there are 6,500 acres of crops ranging from potatoes, carrots, onions, barley, oilseed rape and sugar beet. Also, there are 1500 acres of grazing for sheep and cattle, 300 acres for chickens, 200 acres of stewardship margins which increase wildlife and also a Suffolk Punch Stud. Recent investment saw the building of an Anaerobic Digester which turns green crops into methane, which can be fed back into the gas network. Andrew described this technology as basically “large concrete cows”.
The original William Kent and Capability Brown designed gardens have had much work done in recent years to bring them closer to the original plans. By managing the waterways, in which they cleared over 600 tonnes of wood and silt; the landscape has been dramatically enhanced, with an increase in fish numbers and wildlife diversity. This work has also benefited Thetford as it reduces the chance of flooding. Perhaps one day we will be able to copy such a project and enhance our own rivers which would benefit the wildlife, and visitors alike. We meet next at 7.30pm on Tuesday 4th July Barbara Miller will talk about “Edith Cavell” at the United Reformed Church. New members are welcome.

In May, eight members of Thetford Inner Wheel had the privilege of visiting the East Anglia Air Ambulance base in Norwich. Thetford member Jenny Childerhouse, who is the Inner Wheel District Chairman, had chosen this as her Charity to support during her year. Luckily the air ambulance was not out on a call so members were shown all round the helicopter (even sitting in it!) by the team of a doctor paramedics and the pilot and saw the room where all the equipment for the packs is kept and learnt that the helicopter is off the ground in a very few minutes from when a call comes in. The helicopter covers Norfolk and Suffolk but also overlaps into other counties when needed. Each mission costs on average £3500 so every pound raised is very much appreciated.

Would your community house a clothing bank in aid of two local charities? East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) is delighted to be working with The Salvation Army on a new clothing bank collection scheme. The first two containers have now been placed in Diss and Garboldisham, and the charities are now calling on residents of local communities to put new suggestions forward for further locations. This is a new fundraising initiative for EAAA alongside The Salvation Army with all money raised from the clothing banks being divided equally between the two charities. The clothing banks will be managed by The Salvation Army, with the aim to increase donations for both charities. The charities are aiming to place new containers in locations such as village halls, recycling centres, sports clubs, supermarkets, pubs and car park, so if you own or are responsible for one of these hubs and would like to offer the location for a charity clothing bank please contact EAAA.
Stuart Wyle, Head of Community Fundraising, said: “This is a great opportunity to work with a new partner in the charity sector and benefit both causes from a joint venture. It also gives us a way of involving and interacting with the local communities who want to help out, so please do get in touch if you have a suggestion for a location.” Kirk Bradley, Key Account Manager at Salvation Army Trading Company, said: “We are very pleased to be working alongside EAAA and believe it’s important that, as charities, we help each other where possible. For more information about the initiative and to offer your suggestions for a new local site, please contact corporate@eaaa.org.uk or call 08450 669 999. Thetford Joins In With The Great Get Together Local businesses and members of the community came together on the weekend of Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th June to support the Great Get Together in honour of Jo Cox, the Member of Parliament who was tragically killed last year. Small grants were available from Breckland Council to put on an event to bring local communities together. These events were part of a national celebration of community spirit in the memory of Jo Cox. Up at the Barnham Cross estate, the Charles Burrell Centre hosted an open morning, whilst over on the Abbey estate Keystone Development Trust hosted The Big Abbey Clean Up! Despite the hot weather residents of the Abbey Estate banded together to make a difference in their community. Young and old armed themselves with pickers, gloves and hi-vis jackets and took to the estate streets to litter pick. After a hot morning of picking a

total of 16 bags of rubbish, helpers were rewarded with hotdogs at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre, prepared by Keystone’s Youth Café. Lotti Fraser, Community Development Manager said, “A big thanks to all those who helped and Keystone looks forward to hosting more community events in the future.” It was cakes galore on the Redcastle estate where Redcastle Action Group partnered with the Meet-Up (Benjamin Foundation) to organise a ‘Best Bake’ competition for residents of all ages. Adults, senior school pupils, and primary school children were asked to enter their best bakes into the competition which was then judged by local residents on their taste. Children were also able to practise their cupcake decorating skills in theElectrical craft room..qxl:Layout The winners each category Brunning 1 from 25/11/2013 23:53 Pag and age range were all awarded a trophy to celebrate

their successful baking skills. “We really appreciate the time and effort made by our budding bakers; their creations looked and tasted fantastic. It was enjoyable to watch a healthy competitive spirit between the entrants; although, perhaps surprisingly, this was more noticeable in the adult categories,” explained Kate Mansfield, Chair of Redcastle Action Group. Families enjoying a chat over afternoon tea at Fulmerston Church
Special Activities Co-ordinator Barbara Bysouth said, “We are very grateful to Breckland Council for supporting our celebration with a grant of £200. It was great to see so many people from across the age groups and from across the Barnham Cross community coming together in this way and we’ve had a lovely time”. As a going home treat the children were given another symbol of peace, a rainbow bracelet.

Over at the Charles Burrell Centre, event organiser Joanne Jenkins was feeling jubilant, “The event has been a total success, it’s been wonderful seeing the Thetford community all chatting, eating and drinking together. I’d like to thank each and everyone who has supported the various stalls and activities. It’s great to see we have so much in common.”
Funding Available For Community Projects The Trustees of The Cynthia Della Hoy’s Croxton Charity are able to make grants from their retained funds to charities and other organisations benefitting the communities of Thetford, the villages of Croxton, Kilverstone and East Wretham all being within Thetford Team Ministry. Since the charity started operation in 2012/13 we have granted over £13,000 to local Community, Youth, Village and Church groups. Charities, community groups and other organizations within the area outlined above who wish to seek assistance from this charity for themselves or on behalf of another, may request a grant application form from the charity’s secretary. The following day, Fulmerston Family Project at Fulmerston Church hosted an afternoon tea for 56 people of all ages. Using the theme of ‘peace’, children were able to take part in craft activities including making doves and key rings featuring symbols of peace. Just before enjoying their afternoon tea, participants took a few moments to think about the various symbols of peace displayed around the Church, and then held a minutes’ silence to remember the recent terrorist attacks in Manchester and London, the residents of Grenfell flats and Jo Cox and all that she stood for.

Taking a Chance on Love by the Thetford Methodist Players
Lord Walsingham Court 2017 Open Day
Friday and Saturday 9th and 10th June saw the Methodist Players on stage once again, performing a medley of songs and sketches, showing the various aspects of love. Sounds serious? Only in part! It was a cheerful, comedic, tuneful and tongue in cheek take on the subject.

The players excelled in the variety and spread of their abilities and their enthusiasm delighted the audience. The show was devised by Wendy Serjeant and Thelma Smith with Wendy choosing the songs to fit the theme and accompanying the cast on the piano and Thelma writing the sketches but in the end it was the players interpretation and presentation that made the show. Hats off to everyone who sang, acted, operated lighting and sound, set scenes, provided refreshments (with thanks to Tesco for lovely cakes) sold tickets (thanking Leaping Hare for excellent advertising), set out seats and worked together to bring about the performance.

WASPI Day Of Action Norfolk group ‘WASPI - PAIN’ held their Day of Action recently on 2nd June. WASPI stands for Women Against state Pension Inequality with the Norfolk group called ‘PAIN’ standing for Pension Action In Norfolk. The day of action started in Norwich with members talking to the public and handing out cakes and leaflets. This was followed by a march through the city centre. Members had a very good response and several Norfolk candidates for the general election came along to see the WASPI table in Hay Hill.

Staying Calm
Halcyon Days
In the last issue we discussed how the skin can become sensitised and the main differences between sensitive and sensitised. This month we are looking at how best to keep the skin calm and reduce flare up.

IPL Hair Removal
Research at the International Dermal institute has revealed that when certain active botanical extracts are combined, they will help with the control of redness that accompany inflammation and also reduce the signs of sensitivity and irritation without affecting the body’s natural defences including wound healing and bacterial defence.
IPL Skin Rejuvenation Permanent make up Dermalogica Facials Eve Taylor Facials Opi Nail Treatments
Key ingredients to help calm and soothe are: Avena sativa (oat kernel) proven to have natural anti-irritant and anti-redness properties. Zingiber Officinale (ginger) extract and Bisabolol (from chamomile) work synergistically to reduce redness, inflammation and irritation. Boerhavia Diffusa (Red Hogweed) root extract - this targets neurogenic inflammation, promotes production of natural anti-inflammatory agents in the skin. Its properties provide immediate and long lasting effects to restore the skin’s normal sensitivity levels. There are several other ingredients which also help to calm the skin such as aloe vera for instance, but it is very important not to overload the skin with too many products. Use the less is best rule. Avoid products containing colouring and perfumes, even fragrant detergents and softeners can aggravate the skin. Never wash with hot water, this strips the skin’s barrier, instead use warm water. Don’t smoke. Smoking drains the skin of vitamins A and C and constricts blood vessels – meaning smoking is somewhat like suffocating the skin from the inside. It also dehydrates the skin around the lip area causing wrinkles. Excessive alcohol, caffeine and certain medications can trigger dry, sensitive skin. Loss of existing sebum, the natural body oils, caused by over washing, showering, scrubbing or using harsh soaps. Shaving without a protective medium can weaken the skin’s barrier function.

What is mineral make-up? How is it different? In a world that has gone make-up mad, it’s hard for Accredited beauty therapy courses the best of us to know which Adult cocktail pamper parties type, colour or make we should choose for our skin Handmade beauty products type. Now the sunshine is upon us, our make-up Fun taster beauty workshops selection may change and become lighter or have steppingstonestrainingacademy.co.uk different colour choices. This month I decided to shed Made to Measure 1/8th Advert_Layout 1 10/02/2017 some 1 light on the ever popular facts about “mineral make-up” and what indeed this means.
MADE TO MEASURE
What is mineral make-up? Mineral make-up is exactly as it sounds, it is made up from the earths naturally mined minerals such as Zinc oxide, Mica, and Talc. These are crushed and ground up to make fine powders that are used to make mineral make-up. Is it good for my skin? Generally yes. Although nothing is 100%, it depends on the history of the person using it and their skin. Mineral make up generally is free from preservatives, dyes, perfumes and oils that can play a part in causing skin irritations. Can I still get good coverage with it? Yes, as you can generally build up the layers to create the coverage that works for you. It mainly comes as a loose powder base. What skin type is it good for? All skins, particularly great for oily, problematic skins because of the oil absorbency properties the minerals have. It won’t irritate acne skins because it doesn’t have the ingredients that generally cause irritation. At Stepping Stones Emporium accredited training academy, we work on offering enrichment days for school and college students 14+years and post 16 years. We cover sessions teaching our students how to work with colour pigments used in make-up and especially mineral make up. During these sessions students get to learn about key ingredients and their benefits on the skin and how to add colour pigments to create different make up products. They get to make their own make up to add to their student kits such as eye shadows, highlighters, bronzers and blushers. We find this is a very popular session with the students and really gets them looking at the science behind cosmetics in a fun and creative way.

Centre Celebrates 3 Year Anniversary Charles Burrell Centre has recently celebrated its three year anniversary since reopening the former high school building on Staniforth Road. It’s been another year of progress for the non-profit organisation with the total number of tenants that rent rooms now above forty. In recent months, a women’s clothing boutique, a sports massage therapist and a horticulture scheme to help ex-offenders find employment have all joined the growing network of businesses and community groups that utilise the site.
Renovation work is also being completed to create a volunteer hub to support individuals with personal development on the path to employment and also a brand new sports studio to help support the growing number of groups that hire space for fitness classes. Centre Manager Mark Snowdon described the developments as “Important steps to support the centre’s continuous development.” The centre is home to West Suffolk College Thetford, two pre-school nurseries, a toy library, Foodbank, The Core Studio, a café, community nurses and much more. For more information search ‘Charles Burrell Centre’ on social media pages or visit: www.charlesburrellcentre.org.uk
Annual General Meeting Charles Burrell Centre Ltd will be holding its AGM on Wednesday 12th July 2017, from 7pm at the Centre. All are welcome to attend. Deaf and Blind Cats
By Breckland Cats Protection Loss of sight is often very gradual and owners don’t realise how bad a cat’s eyesight has become until it is identified by a vet. Blind cats usually adapt very well to the loss of sight, compensating by using their other senses more. Some cats are born with no or limited vision and compensate from birth. The common causes of blindness are due to herpes virus or an eye injury. High blood pressure resulting in detachment of the retina, caused by an overactive thyroid or kidney disease, can all result in blindness. Sometimes, if caught early enough the blindness can be reversed. Glaucoma, cataracts, degeneration of the retina, tumours of the eye and scarring of the surface of the eye caused by trauma or infection can all cause blindness too.
easily startled. Signs of dizziness or disorientation and no longer being afraid of the vacuum cleaner are also signs of deafness, as is shaking the head or clawing at the ear, or a discharge or unpleasant odour from the ear. As deaf cats are unable to hear danger, such as cars or other animals, it is best to keep them indoors for their own safety. Deaf cats can learn to recognise hand signals or flashing a torch if they can’t hear you calling them. Make sure the signal you choose to call your cat is distinct and consistent so he doesn’t get confused.
If blindness is caused by disease or injury, one or both eyes may be removed. In this case the cat may become disorientated and be unwilling to leave his sleeping area, or be unable to find his litter tray. Some tips to help him are not allowing him to roam outside for his own safety. Encourage him to walk around indoors on his own. Cats have scent glands on their paws that leave a trail to follow. Talk to him as you approach to avoid startling him. Avoid moving furniture, food and litter trays and don’t leave obstacles where your cat could walk into them. Whiskers become more important to blind cats to judge his proximity to an object. Encourage him to play with jingly toys so that he can exercise to avoid becoming overweight. Some cats are born deaf, but many cats lose their hearing gradually as they age. Sudden loss of hearing is normally a result of illness or injury and may be temporary or permanent. Deaf cats compensate for their lack of hearing by using their other senses more, so much that it may be hard to tell whether or not they are deaf. Deafness maybe caused by tumours, outer and middle ear infection, wax build up or ear mites. Some of these causes are reversible by treating the underlying cause. Other causes are where the nerves associated with the ear do not function properly due to genetic problems, noise trauma and age related degeneration.
For help or advice, or if you need assistance with the cost of neutering, please all us on 01842 810018.
You can tell if your cat is deaf when he calls out more often and more loudly, as he cannot regulate his own volume, while others become mute. Some symptoms may be failure to respond when spoken to or being Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Gardening Notes for July The priority for July is to walk round your garden admiring the flowers – but have secateurs or scissors with you to deadhead as you go. This not only improves the look of a flower bed but helps keep the plants in shape and encourages further flowering. Some bushy plants like hardy geraniums are worth taking the shears to and clearing off all the old flower heads to encourage a second flush. Hanging baskets and containers deserve special care as the plants bred for these will send out fresh shoots if straggly growth is cut back – easy to do when you are on your daily watering round. In the veg patch there should be plenty of salads to pick. Don’t let broad beans get too big or they take on a mealy texture. Keep an eye on courgettes once they start flowering. The fruit develops rapidly but can hide shyly under the leaves until you find you have several long thin marrows. I am growing a yellow courgette this year and hope that means I will find them more easily. Leeks and brassicas should be planted out this month to get well established for the autumn and the nitrogen in the soil after growing beans will be a benefit. If you haven’t pruned your gooseberries and currants, now is the time to thin and train these bushes to make life easier next year. If you have a huge crop of apples or pears, thin the clusters so that good fruits form. If you are planning to replace a rose bush with a container plant, it is a good tip to put the new rose inside a cardboard box (a wine box is ideal!) and plant this.
The cardboard will rot down but it gives time for any problem affecting the soil from the old plant to die away. Bonemeal and compost in the hole will give the new plant a good start of course. Another, slightly stranger, suggestion related to roses is that you can strike a cutting by sitting the stem in a potato! You need to put the potato in a pot of compost, remove all the leaves and top bud and cover the stem with the top of a clear drink bottle. You can see this on YouTube, a source of much strange information. Allotment holders with any chance of winning an award from the Council in the various categories for Best Kept Allotment will probably know that a preliminary selection is made on the 5th and the independent judges make their visit on the 12th. The allotment sites look quite impressive when the annual tidy up has taken place! A treat for members and friends is the Quiz Night on Thursday 27th July starting at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church as usual. Our chairman always finds a good range of questions to entertain us. The Table Show should be interesting as well. Thetford Station Celebrates History and Welcomes Wildlife Over the last couple of years, Thetford Station has been undergoing a transformation. Wildflower beds have been planted and photos celebrating the station’s history have been put up for commuters to enjoy as they wait for their trains. All this hard work has been undertaken by Fiona Rhind and the ‘Friends of Thetford Station’ volunteer group. Breaking New Ground, a landscape partnership scheme in the Brecks, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund provided the group with a small community grant in 2016 to fund the purchase of nest boxes and a long term supply of bird seed. It is hoped that the bird boxes and feeders will encourage swifts and sparrows, two species which are sadly in decline nationally. The wildflowers planted by the group have already attracted butterflies such as the Orange-tip, Comma and Brimstone, as well as bees and lots of other insects.
From left to right: David Stancombe – Breckland Society, Alan Trett – Greater Anglia, Andy Richardson – Friends of Thetford Station, Keith French – Friends of Thetford Station, Charles Napier – Friends of Thetford Station, Ed Goodall – Breaking New Ground
Nick Dickson, Project Manager for Breaking New Ground said “It was obvious from speaking with the Friends of Thetford Station how passionate they are about their local area and increasing biodiversity. Celebrating the vernacular architecture of the station buildings which are made from local flint was a fantastic added bonus!”. James Parry, chairman of The Breckland Society, added: “We are delighted to support the magnificent work done so far by the Friends of Thetford Station and to help raise awareness of the important history and wildlife value of the station and its setting.” James Reeve, Area Customer Service Manager, Greater Anglia, said: “We are very grateful to the Friends of Thetford station for their continuous hard work and dedication. We would also like to thank the Breckland Society for funding the panel, and Steve Mead for his work, which looks magnificent. We hope our customers enjoy the panel, which enhances and celebrates the character of the station.”
Volunteers spent a lot of time researching the material for the interpretation panel which features tales of royal visits and wonderfully preserved Victorian architecture. The panel has been funded by the Breckland Society, and installed by station operators Greater Anglia on Platform 1. A local artist, Steve Mead, produced a fantastic Brecks-inspired painting to showcase local wildlife species, which forms part of the new installation.
The work doesn’t end here though for the Friends of Thetford Station, they will continue to plant wildflowers and improve the experience of Thetford Station for everyone who passes through.

We had a pretty full programme planned and of course, a full programme needs lots of people both to run and also to support it, and everybody did that with so much cheerfulness, willingness and generosity that it was a joy to be part of the team. Nocturnal Special Guests In Thetford Forest If you go down to the woods today… Or to be more precise, if you go down to Thetford Forest one evening in July, you might be in for a lovely surprise indeed. At this time of the year, Thetford Forest is home to the mysterious Nightjar. These unusual birds are rarely seen by day, mostly because you simply wouldn’t know they are there – they blend in beautifully with their surroundings and keep perfectly still, either on tree branches or on their ground nests, which they won’t leave unless you are about to step on them! At dusk, however, all this changes. The males perch high in the trees and make a magical ‘churring’ call. When they fly around, they clap their wings and utter a high pitch cry. In flight, I think they look like a marionette, suspended from above. My words simply cannot do the whole spectacle justice – you just have to see it if you can. In the past, superstition surrounded Nightjars. They were called ‘goatsuckers’, accused of stealing milk from goats, and indeed they can open their gape suspiciously wide when startled.
Nightjar, by John Proudlock
wintering locations of Nightjars for the first time. They mostly spend Christmas in the Congo, although one bird went as far south as Namibia! Our research and monitoring has generated recommendations for optimising Nightjar habitat management, and in recent years things have started to look up. In 2015, the Nightjar was moved from the Birds of Conservation Concern Red List (highest concern) to the Amber List (intermediate concern). This is very promising news indeed, and it’s always nice to hear of a conservation success story for a change. So remember to keep your eyes and ears open for this fantastic bird the next time you’re out and about in the Forest this summer. We are very fortunate indeed to have this species on our doorstep. Best wishes, Viola Ross-Smith, BTO
During the mid to late twentieth century, Nightjar numbers declined and their breeding range suffered a catastrophic contraction. It almost seemed as though Nightjars would take their mysteries with them to local extinction. However, my colleagues at the BTO began working hard to better understand the ecology and conservation requirements of Nightjars breeding in Thetford Forest (and elsewhere). Each year, for most nights in the summer, you’ll find a party of dedicated BTO staff and volunteers out searching for nests and adult birds. In recent years, my colleagues have been attaching tiny GPS tags to record the movements of individual Nightjars. This tells us that Nightjars breeding in the Forest actually leave this area to feed, heading into the surrounding farmland. We also now know the

‘Business Matters’
Negative leverage: This is a threat based form of leverage, which means one side can make the other side worse off. This type of leverage relies on loss aversion.(No one likes to lose) negative leverage can be powerful but it could be a bomb waiting to come off and bring strong reactions from the other side and stop negotiations all together and then no one wins.
By Ryan Windsor The 3 Types Of Negotiation Leverage Leverage is all about influence and gaining control. The ability to award benefits or impose costs on the other side and thus move closer to their ultimate negotiating position. This is especially important in business negotiations and it is a skill we all need to learn, practice and improve if we want close a deal or make a sale.
Normative leverage: Relying on the other side’s social standards, norms and encourages consensus. By agreeing on social standards. The power of this type of leverage stems from people’s desire to conform and be consistent with their values and beliefs. Example; when negotiating with a late paying customer, if they establish themselves as always paying on time, you could use this to set the norm and get them to comply with this past consistent behaviour.
The role of leverage in negotiations is so important, that even those with poor negotiating skills will be able to close a deal, if they have strong leverage. For leverage to really work though it is important that both the threats or promises offered must be perceived as credible by the other peoples. These do not have to be based on facts but the other person believes that the specific threat or promise will be carried out and that would result in a loss or gain for the the other side. This comes down to what one side would lose from not coming to an agreement and generally the side that needs the agreement the most has the least amount of leverage. Conversely the side or group that is willing to walk away from the deal has more leverage and bargaining power.
Remember these are just the types of leverage people may or may not use. It is important to be aware of them and to use them only if you have to. The end goal of any negotiation is to come to an agreement and win/win is always better than win/lose. Would you like to ask Ryan a business-related question? Email ryanwindsor89@gmail.com
There are 3 types of leverage that may be used in a dynamic negotiations and these are: Positive leverage: The ability to provide things that the other side wants or needs, this is particularly powerful as you can either give or withhold a needed item or action and the strength comes from other alternatives to the opposition. This is often referred to as “BATNA” or best alternative to a negotiated agreement. If others can fulfil their items or actions the leverage is weakened.

Take a closer look at Thetford’s History Open the door of Thetford’s Ancient House Museum and you step into a treasure house of local history. Why not reacquaint yourself with the town and area’s remarkable history this summer with a visit to your award-winning Museum? Visitors are welcomed in the airy reception and shop area, from where you can browse the Tudor-style garden or take a seat and watch one of the short films about the area. Discover the story of the house or about local heroes Thomas Paine and Duleep Singh. The old kitchen is a favourite and is displayed as one from 100 years ago complete with a range and mangle. Our current exhibition is all about Thetford Pulp Ware, a distinctive local industry made in the town from Victorian times to the 1950s. The Hall of the house is the room with wow factor with intricately carved ceilings and fireplace, and displays set in Tudor times. The room opposite features items from 90 years of collecting with clay pipes, bronze age tools found in the river and a fierce stuffed pike. Head upstairs you can see carefully made replicas of the Roman Thetford Treasure of jewellery and spoons.

Sing and Celebrate Young singers are invited to help Thetford Voices celebrate their tenth anniversary at 2017’s Summer Singing Workshops on 8th and 9th August. Over these two days 6-18 year olds will come together to learn songs and perform them in concert for friends and family on the last evening. This year's songs are grouped appropriately around the theme of Celebration. We’ll revisit some of the most popular songs from past programmes and introduce standout new numbers. Songs are targeted to groups within the age-range so beginners and more experienced singers will find plenty to enjoy, from big choruses and comedy numbers to action songs and singing in parts, all with an upbeat flavour and great to sing.

Sarah Skinner leads a team of regulars and guest song leaders to deliver the two day course for 6-16 year olds. We’ll also have our popular Toddlers’ Hour for 3-5 year olds (at 10.00 on Tuesday 8th) and for older students – 15 and over – a mixed voice Harmony Session from 4.15 - 5.45 that same evening. As in past years, the course is based at Thetford Grammar School and with the generous help of our sponsors Cynthia Della Hoy’s Croxton Charity, Thetford Town Council and the Chivers Trust we are able to keep course fees at last year’s low level. They are £10 for the Main Course (£5 for a single day) and £3 for Toddlers’ Hour and the Harmony Session. Full supervision is provided by an experienced DBS validated team over two friendly days of good singing. As ever, we hope to be joined by old and new members from across Breckland, Norfolk and Suffolk. We look forward to a memorable 10th birthday. High Kicking and High Flying The 2nd and 3rd of June saw the UEA Sports Park once more hosting the World Kuk Sool Association National Black Belt Testings and European Championships. Thetford practitioners joined 700 other competitors with great success and massive smiles. Black belt candidates Isobel Nicolaou, Jenny French and Anthony Elmer were put through their paces in a grueling and humid three-hour blast of their syllabus. Challenging them both physically and mentally. In between now and this time next year they will complete six further in house tests and a final National Testing in order to achieve their first dahn black belts. One student at the end of that marathon is Leon Racey who was promoted during the Masters Exhibition that followed the competition. Fifteen year old Leon has been practicing for four years and is Master Instructor Kris French’s first Thetford student to go all the way from white belt to black belt. Four years ago he was a slight, shy and nervous boy, but through his training he has become a strong, capable and confident young man. His family, friends, classmates and his instructor are all immensely proud of his achievement, no mean feat considering he is also currently neck deep in his GCSE exams! Leon and his classmates also achieved top four places in the European competition, which was attended by practitioners from all over the continent and the United States: Results Leon Racey, 4th place self defence techniques Daniella Dunsmore, 1st place sparring and 3rd place self defence techniques Mari Parker, 2nd place traditional forms and 4th place self defence techniques. Plus, 4th place staff spinning Kevin Barreto, 2nd place self defence techniques and 3rd place traditional forms

Sincere congratulations and thanks go out to all those who took part, and their families for supporting them. Hopefully next year Thetford will offer a bigger presence and scoop up more medals. Time For 9! Take the healthy option, play 9 holes of golf, taking over 5000 steps and burn 450 calories. 9 Hole Golf is growing rapidly across the UK and Feltwell Golf Club has joined forces with England Golf through their Golf Express Campaign to promote this growing format. The shorter game is also getting support from top players, such as Martin Kaymer, Padraig Harrington, Justin Rose and Charley Hull, to name but a few. We are always being encouraged to do more exercise but trying to fit this into a busy work/life schedule isn’t always easy. However, 9 holes is achievable for most busy people and is an ideal opportunity to get that exercise and fresh air, in really good company. If you are new to golf, don’t worry, we were all there once and there is plenty of help available! If you have played before and given up because of time restraints or family/work commitments, why not come up and try again, we are open 7 days a week and are looking forward to welcoming you to the Club! For more information please contact Kim Heybourne, Secretary at Feltwell Golf Club (next to Feltwell Air Base) or Denise Whiting (Ladies Captain) on either 01842 862079 or 07986 290532.

Thetford Town Boxing Club The month of May proved to be a very busy and successful month for Thetford Town Boxing Club. Roni Dean kicked things off by travelling up to Coventry for Willenhall ABCs home show. Roni out classed Tracey Shephard from Bell Green ABC, showing class and power to win all three rounds. The main event of the month was Eastgate ABC’s show in Bury St Edmunds on the 12th May. Eastgate kindly offered Thetford the chance to put all their available boxers on display in an action packed show, the two clubs putting on an quality evening of boxing.

Thetford's Declan White boxed Charlie Grant of City of Leicester ABC, a very close fight with White getting the split decision. Keiren Keen then took on Nathan Johnson from Hoddesdon ABC. Johnson started strongly in the first round but Keen stepped it up in rounds two and three to take a split decision. The next two Thetford boxers in Conor Dean and Kyle Mckechnie both lost close bouts on split decisions. Thetford youngster Tommy Ivanicki had a skills bout against Thomas Mcmillan of Hoddesdon ABC, impressing the crowd with a great peformance in the second round. Then last but not least was Mason Elliot against Teddy Fleming of Chalvdon ABC. The Chalvedon boxer had a massive height and reach advantage but Elliott put in a spirited and determined performance, much to the delight of the crowd. The last action of the month saw Tommy Ivanicki and Keiren Keen travel to Basildon for Brentwood Youth's home show. Ivanicki boxed a difficult southpaw in a great skills bout showing some great improvement. Keen had a tough bout against a home fighter, getting a well deserved win on a split decision.

Thetford Town Cricket Club U9's V. Hethersett & Tas Valley U9's Thetford Town Cricket Club’s U9s entertained Hethersett and Tas Valley in their 1st ever South Norfolk Cricket League match on a beautiful summer Sunday morning at the Thetford home of cricket. Thetford Captain Theo Piggott won the toss and elected to field in glorious conditions, and this decision paid off as opening bowlers Megan Haynes and Archie Jackson bowled well to restrict the H&TV opening batters to 17 runs. The next partnership of Piggott (2 wkts) and Callum Chisholm (1 wkt) saw the opposition wickets fall with only 14 runs conceded. This trend continued into the 3rd pairing with Dillon Cummings (2 wkts) and Megan Sharland bowling well to restrict H&TV to 19 runs with 2 further wickets falling to excellent run outs by the Thetford fielders. With the final H&TV pairing needed to increase the run rate, they did with some beautiful hitting scoring 28 runs from the final 4 overs from Euan Sheridan and Chisholm. The final total was 178 for the loss of 7 wickets which gave an aggregate score of 143. The Thetford opening pair of Jackson and wicketkeeper Ollie Byford went about the task cautiously and batted very sensibly losing only 1 wicket for 12 runs. The 2nd pair of Chisholm and Cummings batted well and took charge, playing some positive strokes to keep Thetford ahead of the run rate, again losing just 1 wicket. The 3rd pair of Sheridan and Megan Sharland batted very well to lose only 1 wicket whilst adding valuable runs to the Thetford score. The 4th pairing of Piggott and Haynes came together meaning that Thetford needed just 4 runs without losing a wicket from the final 4 overs to win the game. Haynes started very positively dispatching the loose balls to the boundary for 4 runs and with Piggott playing technically correct and running quick 1's and 2's the H&TV

aggregate score of 143 was eventually surpassed Thetford finishing on 177 for the loss of only 3 wickets which gave them and aggregate score of 162 and victory by 19 runs. This was an evenly contested and wonderfully natured match with plenty of local and opposition support in glorious conditions.
