Freedom of Thetford for RAF Honington RAF Honington which was formed in 1937, proudly announces that the Freedom of Thetford is to be presented to the Station on Sunday 9th June 2019. There will be an official Freedom Parade whereby the Title Deed of Freedom will be presented officially by the Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Brenda Canham to Station Commander Group Captain Matt Radnall who said “We are delighted and immensely grateful that Thetford has seen fit to honour the serving community at the unit with the Freedom of the Town. It is significant particularly as the station enjoys such close ties with Thetford, which has become home for many of our former and currently serving members who have chosen to settle there.” RAF Honington was originally granted the honour by former Mayor Roy Brame. The Freedom of Thetford is an ancient sign of trust allowing RAF Honington the freedom to march with “drums beating, flags flying and bayonets fixed”. The opportunity to parade through Thetford is a momentous occasion, particularly given that the town has never before conferred the honour to any other military unit. Personnel from RAF Honington will be parading MCP HP1500 Advert 11.18.qxp_Layout 1 19/11/2018 Currently personnel work at Honington supporting 09:41 Page 1 through Thetford on Sunday 9th June 2019 the RAF at home and abroad.

Time To Enjoy The Diversity Of Thetford Open Gardens Green-fingered fundraisers are urging people to enjoy a collection of diverse gardens opening their gates across Thetford while raising funds for charity. The popular Thetford Open Gardens event will take place on Sunday 23rd June, and will once again see gardens of all shapes and sizes showcased in aid of a good cause. This year you will be able to find beautiful gardens belonging to friendly and welcoming nature loving owners which have rivers running through them and back onto the British Trust for Ornithology. The town’s Crafty Cuppa Club have been busy knitting their own garden which will be on display during the event. Last year’s event attracted hundreds of visitors and raised £11,412 for St Nicholas Hospice Care, which will also benefit from the 2019 day. Miranda McCoy, St Nicholas Hospice Care community fundraiser, said: “Thetford Open Gardens is a treat in the open gardens season. From the small yet fully packed treasures to the larger gardens, there is something for everyone. I hope as many people as possible can join us on the day.”

Discover a wealth of interesting gardens across Thetford on Sunday June 23rd

Organiser Rachel Woods said, “Visit the Market Square to see our ‘garden in a carriage’ and then turn south for lots of new ones. It is very exciting to have 33 gardens opening this year. If you need plants for your gardens, there will be sales at gardens 4,5,6,16 and 23. If you need refreshments to keep you going then every other garden has something to keep you satisfied!” Admission is by programme - available from Thetford Garden Centre, Leaping Hare in King Street and on the day from the Market Place in Thetford town centre.

Out and About Thetford

The cast of Doggonit take a final bow after two successful performances. Photo credit: Maria Cooke

Young Stars Of The Future A delighted audience of family, friends and Players fans were greeted by a group of smiley faces as Thetford Players Youth members presented their first full production – Doggonit. Directed by George Cooke and Leanne White, the young cast were triumphant and proved the time was right to have the spotlight shining on them. Fulmerston Family Church provided the perfect intimate venue, with senior members providing support with props, music and front of house. The laughter rang out as the young Players brought their characters to life with William Bailey following in his father’s footsteps and demonstrating his future potential as a fantastic Panto baddy or dame! Fabulous make-up delivered the cuteness overload for the cast of dogs, especially Dakota played by Chloe Preston. All the performers were at the top of their game with some superb singing performances alongside strong acting skills. One thing is clear, Thetford has some seriously talented young people! Thanking the audience George Cooke said he hoped that everyone enjoyed themselves, and thanked the cast and crew for their support. “It’s been an absolute honour to work with the children, it’s been a privilege and they’re a talent for the future” said co-director Leanne. Thetford Players children workshops will return during the summer. For more information visit; www.thetfordplayers.co.uk/childrens-workshops/ Rain Doesn’t Stop Play! Despite the awful weather East Anglia Game & Country Fair proved a great draw

at Euston Estate. Visitors were able to enjoy a huge array of activities and displays throughout the weekend. Ye Olde Redtail Falconry entertained younger visitors with Axl the Peregrine who swooped above their heads in the main arena, The British Scurry and Trails Driving drew contestants from as far away as Jersey, Windsor and Derbyshire, the smaller the pony the bigger the cheers especially for ‘Meatball’ who at 29” tall was the smallest competitor on Sunday. Another highlight was the organised chaos of terrier racing where visitors could enter their dogs, “I’ve never seen anything like it!” laughed one spectator as small dogs raced round in all directions. Shoppers were well catered for with stalls for everything, from socks to cars and all things doggy. Over in the Cookery Theatre Michael Chamberlain from The Victoria Inn, Holkham was talking about mental health issues with chefs during his demo of some truly sumptuous food. The Dog and Duck pub hosted live music along with an escape from the weather. The East Anglain Game & County Fair will return to Euston Estate April 25th - 26th 2020. www.ukgamefair.co.uk Meatball races round the British Scurry and Trails course during the Sunday competition Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 8

Thetford Showed Them How Great They Were The main Hall at the CBC was packed out as Thetford Town Boxing Club hosted its first stand alone Home Show. Boxers from outside the club used the Show as a venue to fight and came from as far away as Woking. The Show consisted of 16 fights, 6 skills bouts for up and coming boxers and 10 amateur bouts. Welfare Officer Bridget Cobb said, “We wanted to add another event in the town, to give squad members another opportunity to fight on their home turf.” For some of the fighters it was a family affair, Feltwell Primary pupil Jay Russell aged 10 had his fourth fight with the club, “I’ve been with the club for two years and have lots of family watching tonight,” said the confident youngster, “My cousins Vinny and Kieron are also fighting here tonight.” Dad Darrell said he was feeling very proud and that the Show was a family affair. “The Thetford set up is very professional and supportive, I’m really pleased with how they’ve brought on Jay.” The Show proved to be a great success for the squad with wins for Vinny, Josh, Roni, Kieron and Roman, with an exceptional bout from Kieron. The squad was well supported by fellow TTBC members who were not only cheering on, but the younger members were also Roni Dean after her succesful fight sitting together and learning from the bouts. “This is a great venue; the atmosphere has been perfect, and I’ve really enjoyed the evening. I’m really pleased with how the club is developing, it’s been 5 months since the Black Tie Show and I can see the improvement in the squad since then, tonight they are fighting to win,” explained Chairman Pat Pearson. At the end of the evening Thetford’s Kieron Keen was awarded Bout of the Show. School Celebrates 80th Birthday In September 1938 a brand new school opened in the village of Old

Buckenham near Thetford. To mark the occasion pupils and staff at the school have been busy documenting their history and organising a celebration event. On July 7th past and present pupils, staff and their families will join together to enjoy a very special garden party and tree planting ceremony. One of the organisers, Paula Fraser was also a pupil in the late 1970s and has worked at the school for 26 years. “The school buildings haven’t really changed much except the science block, but I’ve seen lots of staff changes over the years. I’m looking forward to catching up with old colleagues at the garden party.” Fellow organiser Caroline Wabe, Additional Needs Instructor and Co-ordinator said the garden party was about showcasing the kids and what they can do along with taking a trip down memory lane. Pupils from year 7 to 11 have worked with English teacher Dena Eden and BBC Voices to create a film about the past 80 years at the school. The young volunteer film makers discovered that in its early days children started the school aged 4 and left aged 15. The group interviewed one past pupil who was at the school in the 1940s and were surprised to hear that pig husbandry lessons were part of his timetable along with horticulture lessons. “We prepared our questions but also elaborated on anything surprising that came up during the interviews,” said Sophie. “It’s been so much fun, I’ve really enjoyed it and its been nice to hear from the community,” explained Mia. The school has young people from a wide area across Norfolk with many pupils from Thetford. “I really love it here and I’m glad it’s my school,” said Oli who joined the school last year from a Thetford primary, “I love the Drama department and all the activities that the school runs.” Below: Young film makers Mia, Elena, Sophie, Toby and Oli

Care Home Welcomes Young Visitors A room full of laughter welcomed About Thetford when Karen dropped in to one of the multi-generational sessions being run at Randale Care’s Redgate House. Six pupils from Norwich Road Academy Reception class were enjoying their weekly afternoon session with the residents and had been busy baking together and decorating cakes. The collaboration between the school and the care home has been running since March and is based around a series of planned activities. The project has been a great success with both the children and residents benefitting from creating new friendships and enjoying new experiences. Everyone loved the Jack and the Beanstalk puppet show, some of the residents joined in with the story whilst others just enjoyed watching the children being busy.

Breckland Cancer Support Group We are a relatively new group of people that have had our lives touched by cancer, whether directly ourselves or by the illness of a close relative or friend. Several of us met when we attended a free 6 week HOPE (Helping Overcome Problems Effectively) course in Thetford which was run by Survivorship Coordinators from the Macmillan Centre at West Suffolk Hospital. We liked the idea of keeping in contact once the course finished and our group was formed. More people have joined since, with some from Mildenhall, Lakenheath, and Brandon. We hold monthly meetings for refreshments and a chat at the Keystone Innovation Centre on Croxton Road, Thetford, IP24 1JD. We occasionally have talks by health professionals on relevant topics and also arrange outings in the locality to meet up for a cuppa or have lunch together. We aim to support sufferers, their families and friends, through social interaction, friendship and a mutual understanding of some of the difficulties of dealing with cancer-related problems. We have access to support materials if needed. We have a public Facebook page (search Breckland Cancer Support Group) and also a closed Group which members can join and use to keep in touch with each other. If you, or someone you know, has been affected by cancer please pop along to meet us. The receptionist will let you know which room we are in. There is just a small charge of ÂŁ2 per person to cover the hire of the room and the cost of refreshments. Our next meetings, at the Innovation Centre, will be between 10.30am and 12.30pm, on the following Wednesdays: 12th June, 10th July, 14th August & 11th September. If you need any further information please contact us on our mobile number 07922525375 between 10am and 8pm. We also have a Facebook page where you can post a message or ask about us at the Macmillan Centre at West Suffolk Hospital.

Directors Katie Wright and Craig Plumley, said, "South Pacific is a joy to direct for us. We are extremely fortunate to have such a strong cast that are already delivering great performances in rehearsals. The show’s dramatic story line is allowing us, as directors, to really stretch the actors to their true potential. There is nothing more satisfying than watching your vision come to life. We are loving the experience as much as the cast are. It will be a true spectacle for Thetford." Those who know Julie Settle from Thetford Singers are in for a treat from her performance as Bloody Mary, “Bali Ha’i is a song I’ve always loved so when I heard the Players were doing South Pacific I decided to audition. I haven’t acted since school although I’ve done lots of singing. Learning the lines has been quite a thing for me!” explained Julie.

Julie Settle as you’ve never seen her before, going to town as Bloody Mary during a rehearsal

Set against the dramatic background of an idyllic South Pacific island during WWII, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific intertwines the themes of romance, duty, and prejudice to create a story that is all at once hilarious, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking. Based on the anecdotes of a real-life U.S. Navy commander who was stationed on an island, the musical follows two intercultural love stories: Nellie, a spunky nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with Emile, a French plantation Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 15

Nordic Approach To A Balanced Life At their May monthly meeting members of Thetford Probus were transported to a country of forests, wide open spaces and a sparse population. Speaker Robert Ogden, a former teacher at Charles Burrell School and now a United Reformed Church Worship Leader, gave a fascinating talk about his long association with Sweden which grew from an encounter at a Camp America over four decades ago. Robert explained that it was the beginning of a close and enduring friendship between a Swedish family and his own, with regular exchange visits to each other’s country. As a result he had gained an insight into the country and people along with its traditions and way of life. Hardly surprising then that his talk and well-illustrated presentation was titled ‘The Swedish Art of Balanced Living’. While Abba, Ikea, Volvo cars and vast forests might immediately come to mind when thinking of Sweden, Robert highlighted many other features, most notably the Swedish characteristic of being tolerant and their consensual approach to most things. And although it is one of the largest countries in Europe, its population is only about 10 million. He explained the country’s cradle to grave system covering everything from welfare, healthcare and education, which is the envy of many other countries as is the high standard of living, but added that the Swedes accept and understand this has to be paid for by high taxes.

The talk conveyed the appeal, charm and nature of Sweden and its people. Describing an aspect of, ‘when in their country do as they do’, which involves having to take body and mind-numbing dips in frighteningly icy water as part of the healthy outdoor lifestyle it brought plenty of laughs from members. Robert concluded by LJ Taxis 1/8 AD.qxp_Layout 1 08/11/2017 15:51 Page answering questions and was applauded for his talk.

Peace Comes To Thetford The Forgotten Soldiers Leaping Hare CIC has received a grant of £10,000 from the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a project ‘Peace Comes To Thetford – The Forgotten Soldiers’.

To mark the Centenary of the First World War, the project will enable local people in Thetford to come together to preserve the memories and heritage of The Forgotten Soldiers. Our local historian David Osborne will work alongside other key advisors to engage with schools, community groups and volunteers to record people’s memories and experiences, through workshops, talks and more. The project will involve researching the location of graves and exploring what we can find out about their lives and ensuring their stories are told. We are also looking for local connections to family members or relatives or contemporaries who will still be alive today. There will be opportunity to learn new skills and be involved in a valued community project. The project will also explore how peace was celebrated in Thetford and how the town commemorated the conflict. We aim to discover and catalogue the local graves of First World War soldiers (interred between 1914 – 1935) leading to the construction of information boards at Thetford Cemetery including the local Forgotten Soldiers and ensure that they are finally recognised. The Forgotten Soldier’s story will then also be the focus of three further events – a community street event on Saturday 20th July, a Christmas Tree Trail and inclusion in Heritage Open Days. There will then be a further celebration event for all participants as part of Heritage

Open Days 2020. We aim to have an on-line archive where everyone can access information. The archive will allow the public to discuss, contribute, share and research information. Commenting on the award, Corinne Fulford from Leaping Hare CIC based on King Street in Thetford said: “We’re delighted that we’ve received this support thanks to National Lottery players and we’re looking forward to co-ordinating this project on behalf of many Thetford QP June 19.qxp_Layout 1 23/05/2019 13 groups andRaj individuals”.

Awarded through its First World War: Then And Now programme, the project will focus on the story of The Forgotten Soldiers – the men that survived the war and returned home, but who later died of their wounds or survived but they and their families suffered life changing circumstances. These men, often in their twenties and thirties were never commemorated, there is no record of what happened to them and sadly they are not recognised.

Town Of Sanctuary Plans Launched Could Thetford be designated a 'Town of Sanctuary'? Yes was the emphatic answer given by an enthusiatic audience after hearing a talk by Ben Margolis from the City of Sanctuary charity, a rapidly expanding national movement. Ben is regional co-ordinator and explained that the charity's aim is to build a practice and culture of welcome for refugees and asylum seekers. It has worked with many organisations and cities around the country including Norwich, which has been designated a city of sanctuary, because of its many inspirational projects. Research has proven that the most dynamic and flourishing communities are those that embrace diversity. Thetford has a brilliantly diverse population and Councillor Roy Brame, former Mayor of Thetford, who attended the meeting, spoke in support of the movement's aims. He felt that anything that could further enhance the quality of life for everyone in Thetford was worth developing. People agreed and signed up expressing interest. Thetford's Amnesty group, which arranged the event, pledged to call another meeting and Thetford Library agreed to offer a meeting place. The group thanked Ben for an inspiring talk, Kaleigh and the Library for hosting

it and all those attending for showing, yet again, that Thetford is a caring and outward looking town. Andrea, one of the Nightshelter organisers, said how amazing Thetford people had been about supporting that venture and felt people of the town would get behind this too. For information about the Amnesty group please visit @AmnestyThetford on Facebook. For more info about the City of Sanctuary please visit their website: www.cityofsanctuary.org

After the closure of the AGM we were given a talk by Kate Brewster from the Dogs Trust at Snetterton. We were surprised to learn that during the war long coated dogs fur was brushed, washed, dried and spun into lovely warm socks for our soldiers. Kate had prepared a presentation of the various centres around the UK plus a cartoon depicting a dog called Charlie who had been a victim of puppy farming. The Dogs Trust are putting a great effort in trying to stop these farms but unfortunately people are still buying from them without a great deal of thought of problems that exist with these puppies. The U3A Industrial Tourism group are planning a visit in October to Snetterton. Our next meeting is on June 27th and we welcome Philip Caine speaking on his travels titled ‘Barrow to Baghdad and back again’. Meetings are held at the Carnegie Room Thetford at 2.00pm. Festival Of Norfolk And Punjab Discover Princess Sophia Duleep Singh On show at Ancient House Museum is a new exhibition about Princess Sophia Duleep Singh. This will run from Saturday 15th June – Saturday 3rd August as part of this summer’s Festival of Norfolk and Punjab. The pop-up exhibition explains the extraordinary life and contributions of Sophia Duleep Singh: suffragette, nurse, princess and dog lover. The display graphically tells the story using rare photographic images and an interactive touchscreen, on loan from the Sikh Museum Initiative. Princess Sophia spent her early life with her family at Elveden Hall near Thetford and also lived at Blo Norton and Old Buckenham as well as a grace and favour apartment in London opposite Hampton Court. She was a militant campaigner for woman’s right to vote, and was often seen selling the newspaper The Suffragette outside Hampton Court Palace. In later life, she stated her life’s purpose was “the advancement of women”. Princess Sophia Duleep Singh has come to the public eye in recent years as an unsung hero of the suffragette movement.

Connie's Colander by Gaye Poole Connie is a retired domestic science teacher. Emily, her daughter, is enjoying hosting her first TV cookery show: Connie’s Colander, bringing her mother’s recipes onscreen and up to date. Sensitively, with humour and tenderness this newly written play traces the evolving relationship throughout their lives, and the impact of Connie’s Alzheimer’s. Can their relationship, and the TV show, survive? Performing on Friday 14th June 2019 at Thetford Library. Running time 50 mins. Followed by a 20 minute post-show Q & A with a dementia specialist. An informal atmosphere is created for the Q & A, which is facilitated by the two actors, with local dementia specialists able to signpost people to their local services. Peter Cresswell Speaks At Thetford Society The May meeting began with the usual summary of our upcoming events. They are proving very popular but there is still limited availability on some of the trips which will take place this summer. Our May speaker was Peter Cresswell, whose life in the entertainment industry started in his home town of Great Yarmouth where he began working at the Wellington Pier. In his early 20s he was responsible for a 1200 seat theatre, the Winter Gardens and an outdoor roller-skating venue (very popular back then!). The early 1960’s was the heyday of seaside entertainment, where Easter rolled straight into the summer season with acts such as Morecombe and Wise, Val Doonican, Mike and Bernie Winters, Lesley Crowther, Bruce Forsyth and Tommy Cooper. Yet it was the well known entertainer Des O’Connor who managed an incredible 98% capacity for the whole season. After 10 years in the industry, Peter decided to try something different; he saw an advertisement in the Stage magazine for an Entertainments Officer in Cambridge. Here he organised everything from Nana Mouskouri to Medieval Jousting, a Folk Festival and a concert by the London Symphony Orchestra but he missed being tied to a venue. When the opportunity arose to do this in Worthing Sussex he jumped at the chance. A highlight from that period was the annual London taxi outings which took disabled war veterans for trips who were then entertained by Vera Lynn. Before his retirement, Peter rescued a modern venue in Royal Leamington Spa which had got off to a bad start, but that’s another story!

National Recognition For Local Business Lawsons Estate Agents have just won the British Property Award for Thetford, for the third year running. Their team performed outstandingly throughout the extensive judging period, which focused on customer service levels. Lawsons Estate Agents have now been shortlisted for a number of national awards which will be announced later in the year. The British Property Awards provide agents throughout the UK with an invaluable opportunity to compare the service that they provide against the service provided by their local, regional and national competition. Agents who go that extra mile and provide outstanding levels of customer service are rewarded with the accolade, which acts as a beacon to highlight these attributes to their marketplace. Speaking about the award, Ben Turner, Sales Manager said, “We’re delighted to have been recognised again by the British Property Award for the service we provide. Our team strive to do their best to make each sale and purchase run as smoothly as possible.” Lawsons Estate Agents are also well known for their support of Thetford Open Gardens, having been the

main sponsor for the past 13 years. “It’s been a great pleasure to support Rachel and her team fundraise for such a worthwhile cause,” explained Matt Lawson, “We enjoy working with the local community and further strengthening our links. Thetford Players – Cheque Presentation

Thetford Flower Club

Each year members of Thetford Players amateur dramatic group, pick a local charity to support and throughout the year raise money to help with the work they do. Fundraising this year has been through raffles and collections at shows, including the first Thetford Players Youth musical, as well as a fun quiz night.

At the last meeting of Thetford Flower Club, Mrs Clair Lee was presented with the Peggy Bullard Trophy for the most liked Spring Arrangement, by Chairman Lorraine Scott. It was the National Association of Flower Arrangers (N.A.F.A.S) Annual Celebration this month and flower arrangements and tied bouquets were left by club members around the town, at Hanover Court and Ford Place. The club meets every 3rd Thursday at the Church on the Way, Churchill Road, Thetford. Visitors are welcome at a cost of £5.

Emma Kelly, Players Chair, said “Link Up, Breckland’s Talking Newspaper have many volunteers who give up their time to ensure that those who are visually impaired or blind have access to current news and events. In recognition of the fantastic work that Link Up undertake, they were selected as our charity for this year. We were very excited to be able to pass on a cheque in the sum of £1000, and hope that this will go some way to help support their work”. Sharon Nash from Link-Up said, “We are so grateful that Thetford Players chose us as their charity of the year as, because we are a very small local charity, we have no regular income. Donations such as theirs go a long way to help keep us going. We are all volunteers, and in order to provide a free talking newspaper to blind or visually impaired listeners, we do need money! As well as producing each edition, we also provide the hardware our listeners need in order to hear what we've recorded for them. Throughout this year we have really enjoyed having a stand at the Panto, Wizard of Oz and the Children’s performance at Fulmerston Church and we wish them well for their forthcoming production South Pacific and of course their next panto, Beauty and the Beast”. This month’s Thetford Face is Yvonne Warren. Yvonne is a Trustee at Thetford and District Dementia Support and has been helping to champion Thetford as a dementia friendly town. How long have you lived in Thetford? I have been here about 49 years. Originally we came here to visit friends who’d moved here, and we really liked Thetford, so we decided to move here too. Don my husband was an accountant but to move here took a job at Thermos. We had to wait to get a house, but Rev Room who was a Councillor at the time, helped us to get our house on Kimms Belt.

Yvonne Warren at home in Thetford

Yvonne, far right singing with Pam Spencer (C) and Rosemary during a performance of the Dad’s Army production

Did you get involved in any activities in town? I joined Thetford Music and Drama Society and really enjoyed it. I was in several productions including the Dads Army production that David Croft produced for us. We took it to the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds in 1981. The production was my favourite because of my links to the cast. I enjoyed the music nights and being in My Fair Lady, I often sang with Pam Spencer and Ann Swaine. One of my funniest memories is when we had to use a big dog instead of a goat in the Sound of Music because we couldn’t get a goat on stage. Did you ever have any ghostly experiences when you worked at The Bell? Yes, we did have a few experiences, but it never really bothered me! We had

a lady ghost in the old part of the hotel that caused a few problems sometimes. I worked at The Bell behind the bars under Johan Bolling for around 4 years during the time when the Dad’s Army crowd were in. We knew them when they were out of character, but they almost mirrored their characters and used to bicker amongst themselves! My favourite was Clive Dunn, he was a gentleman, people didn’t recognise him out of character very often. They used the lounge area as their base and were fun to work with.

opening. I invited Johan up to have dinner and to see if I could get the girls jobs. Johan then asked me to move with him to be the Front of House and Guest Liaison Manager. It was lovely to work with Johan again; in those days Centre Parcs was owned by a Dutch family and was a great place to work.

Yvonne, far right with some of her Sea Cadets Photo: Norwich Mercury

You’ve enjoyed being part of the community, what inspired you to get involved? In the late 70s. early 80s we ran The Dolphin. I was the landlady for 5 years. During our time there we had the CB Club, Locomotion Club and started an annual Pancake Race. It was a good time to have a pub in those days, every pub in the town was busy. I don’t remember any ghost encounters when we were there, but we did have to put blocks under the furniture to get it to stand straight. My son Geoff joined the Sea Cadets because he wanted to be in the Marines and I became involved because they announced that they wanted to start a GNTC, Girls Nautical Training Corp at Croxton Road Camp. I had a lady called Bernie who helped me set up the unit. We did anything to do with Navy training, went on Navy Days and encouraged the girls to have a go. One of my girls went on to join the Navy. After 3 years in Thetford I moved over to Bury St Edmunds as I was asked to open a unit there. How did you end up at Centre Parcs? I moved to Centre Parcs when it first opened with Johan. At the time I was working at the M&S Warehouse in the town and when it was announced that M&S were closing us down, it was at the same time as Centre Parcs was

Yvonne, far right with her TADDS colleagues

How did you become involved in TADDS? I was involved in dementia care because Don had dementia for 10 years. I did my dementia nursing training so I could look after him at home. I met someone who mentioned that Jo Mountjoy-Dixon was starting up a dementia support group. Jo talked me into helping and I’ve been involved for 5 years now. When we first started my granddaughters made a pile of friendship bracelets which they sold and that £100 was the first funding that we had for TADDS. I think about Don all the time when I’m there and I’m proud to be the Treasurer and a Trustee. I enjoy meeting our members, helping and supporting everyone. I just wish there had been something to help and support me all those years ago. What is your favourite thing about Thetford? You’re so near to the countryside and nature. It’s a beautiful town, especially Nuns Bridges and places like that. I just like the people who live here too. I’m sad that the town centre is closing down We’ve had some lovely shops in the past.

Buckingham Palace Trip for Duke Of Edinburgh Trio Three former pupils from Thetford Grammar School recently attended a presentation at Buckingham Palace, London, where they received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh (D of E) Awards from celebrity presenter, Andi Peters, after sharing their experiences with Trustee for The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, HRH The Countess of Wessex. During the Gold Award Presentation, HRH congratulated Cecily White, Isabelle Todd and Jacob Wright on their successes and heard about their D o fE journeys, which took each young person 12-18 months of hard work and dedication. Those who achieve a Gold D of E Award will volunteer, learn a skill, get fit, take part in a week long residential and plan and undertake an expedition in wild country. Widely acknowledged as the world’s leading achievement award for young people, D of E programmes enable any young person, aged 14-24, to develop key skills for life and work, such as confidence, commitment and team working.

Cecily White, Jacob Wright and Isabelle Todd pictured at Buckingham Palace There are currently over 400,000 young people taking part in a D of E programme across the UK through a variety of centres including both state and independent schools, special schools, businesses, prisons, young offender institutions and youth groups.

To find out more about the D of E and how it enables people to succeed, please visit the website: 16:20 Page Mr G's QP Advert.qxp_Layout 1 11/01/2018 Speaking about her D of E experience, Cecily said, “I’ve young www.DofE.org enjoyed my D of E experience so much that I have now started my D of E Leader qualification and took my first group out on their Bronze practice expedition. I’ve learnt how to lead a team and overcome challenges through the programme and would recommend D of E to all young people.” Jacob continued, “The trip to Buckingham Palace made all the hard work worth it and it was great to meet the Countess of Wessex.” Finally Isabelle added, “Knowing that the expedition was my final challenge kept me going when it got tough, I’m so pleased to have achieved the Gold award”. After their Over 50s - 3 games for £6 visit to Buckingham Palace the group celebrated the (available Mon-Fri 10am-6pm) sucess enjoying afternoon tea on a river cruise. Schools Come Together To Beat Bullying More than 100 Norfolk schoolchildren have joined forces to say no to bullying. Pupils from 11 schools and sixth forms gathered at Thetford Academy on Thursday, May 2 to become Anti-Bullying Ambassadors in a training day run by The Diana Award, a charity set up in memory of the Princess of Wales to improve young people’s lives. Students from Thetford Academy, Jane Austen College, The Hewett Academy, Old Buckenham High School, The Nicholas Hamond Academy Sixth Form, Litcham High School and others spent the day exploring what bullying means, both face-to-face and online. In a series of workshops and activities they learned how to support their peers who have been affected by bullying, and put together an action plan to take back to their schools. Many of the new ambassadors said they had experienced bullying at some point in their lives and wanted to do their bit to stop it happening. Thetford Academy student Scarlett Pablo said: “The day was fantastic. I have learned a lot of different stuff about bullying and how to limit the impact of it.” The training day was the brainchild of the Breckland Youth Advisory Board, which works with Thetford Academy and nearby schools to give young people a voice about the issues that matter to them and their community. With bullying identified as a key concern for young people in the region, the board has been working with schools across Norfolk to ensure students and staff have the tools they need to tackle the issue.

Emily Holt, Head of Technology at Jane Austen College, said: “Our students were fully engaged with the training day and embraced every opportunity to discuss the causes and impacts of bullying. They are excited to start implementing their ideas and ensure their community is a safe and happy place to grow up in”

Garden And Allotment Club Notes Glorious June – so much to enjoy in our own gardens and those of other people: Yes, it’s Open Gardens time again! Get your programme in advance of the 23rd to plan a route that includes your favourites (from Leaping Hare or Thetford Garden Centre for £5) At last tender plants can be hardened off and set out to grow. Keep them well-watered and give them some protection if the weather forecast suggests cold winds. Begin to thin early sowings of lettuce and carrots if they are looking overcrowded. Take some measures to protect them against slugs and snails until they grow a little and harden off, I’ve recently heard that attaching crumpled tinfoil to the top of the pot can help. This is a good month to prune cherry and plum trees even if it means cutting out some fruiting wood. For apples and pears, there should be a natural shedding of excess fruits (the June drop) but it is best to thin out the tiny fruits to ensure an eatable crop. I left one tree to its own devices last year and ended up with hundreds of perfect apples an inch across! In your greenhouse you need to pinch out side-shoots from tomato plants so that the plant puts its strength into producing fruit. These shoots can be potted up to give you more plants. Take a pair of snips with you on an evening stroll round the garden to deadhead spent flowers. Sweet peas, however, should be cut as they come into bloom. The flowers do not last long indoors but the scent and cheerful colour is incomparable. And speaking of sweet peas – it is the club Summer show on Thursday 27th June, also called the Rose and Sweet Pea Show. Scent will fill the United Reformed Church that evening. This is an open show so anyone can bring blooms and set up between 6.30 and 7.30. The classes include hanging baskets and chocolate cake as well as the main event.

Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses Thetford (Breckland) Lioness Lyn and Lioness President Dorothy presented four medi-bears to the staff of the Rainbow (Children’s) Ward at the West Suffolk Hospital. The medibears have been fitted with medical devices such as canulae, stoma bags, bandages, and feeding tubes. The bears may help reduce worries and fears of the children as they become familiar with the devices in the bears, that they themselves may need. Tracking The Elusive Goshawk The Goshawk is a striking, powerful but elusive raptor that attracts much interest from birdwatchers in the UK. This fantastic species breeds across the northern hemisphere and is well-established in cities such as Prague and Berlin. In the UK however, it remains scarce, recovering from periods of effective extinction in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Breckland is a regional stronghold for the Goshawk, but their furtive nature means we know very little about the movements and needs of this so-called ‘iconic’ species of our area. Modern technology offers new opportunities to ‘observe’ this bird’s behaviour, through tracking devices (attached under licence) and remote cameras. The tracking devices give satellite fixes that are relayed to us via the mobile phone network, providing near real-time data on the bird’s location. Following several years of such study in Thetford Forest, we now have information on both the diet, via nest cameras recording prey items the adults bring to feed their chicks, and the movements of young birds from those nests. We are starting to understand where the birds hunt and where they disperse. We are also finding clues to the main causes of death and sources of risk to young Goshawks. The main prey items of our local Goshawks are Grey Squirrels and Woodpigeons, followed by the five crow species commonly found in and around the forest. The diet is broad and may reflect local abundances of prey, rabbits feature at some nests. On leaving the nest, young Goshawks disperse into the wider countryside. Sometimes they travel up to 20 miles away but often move only about 3 miles. Typically, their entire winter is centred on farmland rather than forest, where we think these naïve hunters are able to avoid older Goshawks (that may kill them) and find food more easily. In March, the young birds begin to interact with territorial Goshawks, spending more time over the forest once

again. Young females appear to make wide-ranging exploratory journeys at this time, sometimes covering much of East Anglia, presumably in search of unattached males. Most birds settle to breed one year later, though. The smaller males are very active at a local scale but are not so exploratory come the spring. We have learnt more about local Goshawk movements in the last three years from tracking work than during decades before. We know that the Breckland population is unlikely to be isolated. When it comes to mortality, we know road traffic collisions, predation (probably by other Goshawks) and disease all play a part, while some birds simply go missing. The study is ongoing; you can find out more by searching ‘Tagging tagging Goshawks in the Brecks’ on BTO’s new website: www.bto.org Ian Henderson

Could Moisturising Twice Daily Prevent Age-Related Chronic Diseases? Recent reports in the latest beauty magazines reveal that according to a study by researchers at the University of California, regularly moisturising the skin could prevent age-related chronic diseases. The Californian team were investigating whether keeping skin moisturised to decrease inflammation could also reverse the risk of developing chronic conditions such as heart disease, alzheimer’s and diabetes. Only a very small group of people took part in the study and so it would be necessary to carry out more studies before jumping to conclusions. However, this study came about because another team of scientific researchers discovered small cracks in the skin released cytokines into the blood supply. These in turn had led to systematic inflammation and also disease. In younger skin cytokines are very effective at helping to repair cracks, but the body will continue to release inflammatory messengers in older skin because the skin is much more difficult to heal. When the cytokines reach the bloodstream they are able to travel around and cause inflammation. The study group had to apply moisturiser twice a day for 30 days and had their cytokines measured before and after the trial. All levels of cytokines were reduced in the blood and also appeared lower than adults of the same age after the trial was completed. It sounds really interesting and will be great to hear what comes of this interesting study in the future. But at least for now I am going to continue with my moisturising regime. Breckland Cats Protection If you are a cat owner, irrespective of your age, it is sensible to make provision for your cat if anything should happen to you. We at Cats Protection often receive calls from members of the public whose relatives are no longer able to look after their cats. Unfortunately, we are a very small branch with space for about 10 cats and are often unable to take in any more. Cats Protection offer a Cat Guardian Service and if you register with us then we will arrange to bring your cat or cats into our care if you should pass away or are no longer able to care for your cat. It does not cost anything to sign up to Cat Guardians, but many people chose to remember Cats Protection in their will. The gifts that are left to us are vital as more than half the work we do to help cats and kittens throughout the UK is funded by this incredible generosity. You can register with Cat Guardians by calling our team on 01825 741291 or email us at www.cats.org.uk/catguardians. The peace of mind that you receive, knowing that your cats will be lovingly cared for while we search for a new home for them, is truly valuable. Students Complete Film Project Place21 students made a great impression as they showcased the results of the project they have been working on since January to produce a booklet and video to promote the Charles Burrell Centre - a community and business centre in Thetford. The West Suffolk College Level 3 Business students, Millie Atherton, Max Barnett, Tom Everitt, Tom Gerrell and Abigail Register worked together as part of the Place21 GOLD Club initiative along with Place21 Project Leader Andrew Wheeler, West Suffolk College Thetford and Place21’s Suzanne Connolly, Neil Foley from The Business Growth Club and Ola and his team from the film making company Just Another Label. The students worked together to research the history of the Centre and interviewed tenants and the sessional hirers to ask about their businesses and what brought them to the centre. Their focus was on the uniqueness of CBC and how much it offers with varied businesses and group sessions for fitness, education, health & wellbeing, printing & promotional needs, car hire, vintage and new clothes, toys, art and hobby groups and so much more. CBC is home to many diverse groups and individuals who together make it the success it is, including ‘Bear’ the neighbourhood cat and Sid the West Brother’s dog who both love a bit of a fuss and attention. The Place21 students, through their booklet and video, have managed to capture a part of what the Charles Burrell Centre is and the innovative ways the businesses have adapted the space. This is only the start of their story as the CBC is looking to grow with a new Business Manager in place, the launch of The Engine Room Café and the recently formed Forge business. Place21 Gold Club plan to return in the new academic year to offer the chance for new students to discover the importance of social enterprise projects.

Celebrate Your Baby's Milestone With FotoArt Studio! A Sitter Session, otherwise known as a milestone photoshoot is a celebration of your little one learning to sit up, it won’t be long before they are running around so don’t miss out on capturing this special stage. The session takes place when your baby can sit and crawl, but doesn’t yet walk. Every baby develops differently, so a sitter session is usually scheduled when your baby is around 6 to 9 months old. Babies are very interactive at this age and are full of genuine expressions. They smile easily, they giggle and make these adorable faces.

Brandon And District Photographic Club We are now coming to the end of our year for the Photographic Club and we are looking forward to a summer of taking photographs ready for next year!

A photo from last year’s Weeting Steam Rally

For these sessions we allow up to one hour, which allows plenty of time to change outfits and set ups. Sitter session outfits and use of all props are provided within your session price. If the whole family would like to join in, I love to include Mum, Dad and siblings in these photography sessions too! PhotoArt Sitter Sessions include: 1 hour of studio time, Full use of props 3 edited digital images The session fee is £60.00 You will also have an option to purchase more images if you wish to do so. To book or find out more about this session please contact the studio: E-mail: info@fotoartstudio.co.uk Website: www.fotoartstudio.co.uk

The new calendar will be published very soon giving you all a chance to look at what we have to offer as well as the subjects for the coming Competitions, Tutorials and Talks. It promises to be a very varied and interesting year. Though our year is officially at an end we will still be taking a stand at both Hockwold Country Fair and Weeting Steam Rally this summer, so be sure to come along to both these events and visit our stand. We will have a selection of some of our best prints from this year and you will get an opportunity at Hockwold to walk away with a picture of your choice simply by entering our Prize Draw. If you are new to the art of photography then please come along to either of these events, meet our members and see how joining us can improve your photographic skills. More experienced photographers are also welcome at Brandon & District Photographic Club, we all like to share our experiences and our knowledge and encourage skilled photographers to join us; we can all learn from each other. Partnership Benefits Students This year’s career fair at Thetford Academy was a joint partnership between the school and Catch 22 College. Tutor, Sue Scott said that the event had been an exercise in applied learning for the college students, “Students from Catch 22 have been working on event management, risk assessments, table plans and job roles. Now they are delivering the actual Careers Fair for the students of Thetford Academy. I’m really pleased with how it’s come together, there’s been good support from the community and lots of interactive stands.” Lindsay Armes, Careers lead at Thetford Academy was delighted with the inaugural event delivered by the college, “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students to meet local businesses who maybe are their potential employers and it has been great to work with Catch 22, some of whom are former pupils.” Over 500 students from Thetford Academy had the opportunity to talk to a wide range of employers and higher education providers. One of the businesses that was represented, ARP, based in Breckland House, were looking for administration apprentices starting at Level 3. Manager Julie Dean explained that as a business they strive as to offer great job satisfaction at every level including offering family friendly flexi hours. “As a team we cover Breckland, East Cambridgeshire, West and East Suffolk and Fenland authorities. We’re here today to talk about our opportunities and what we have to offer our staff.” Charlotte Harris continued, “We’re looking for dynamic, enthusiastic and computer literate people who are independent thinkers with great attention to detail,” As part of the event About Thetford invited a Year 12 student, Spencer Hornsby to contribute to the report about the event, see below; “Thetford, a town of opportunity. Well that is evident after visiting the careers fair at the Thetford Academy. Businesses from all over Thetford gathered to promote their companies and discuss future opportunities with enthusiastic students. The appearance of universities and colleges from all over Norfolk and the Country had the students engaged and wanting to know more about the opportunities in front of them. Arranged by Catch 22 College, which offers training experience and individual learning to 16 to 19 year old people based in Thetford, the whole event was a success. Organisations attending said members of the Academy had a ‘diverse range’ of interests and credited them on their politeness.” Spencer Hornsby

Parkruuner Of The Month This month we would like to feature husband and wife team Tony and Judith Friend. Tony, 56 started parkrun first on the 28th February 2015 and his wife Judith, 59 joined parkrun on 21st March 2015. Tony and Judith live near the parkrun route and used to watch the parkrunners run near their home on Saturday mornings and thought they would join the event as a way of getting fitter without paying gym memberships. Tony and Judith have since become regular runners and volunteers at parkrun. Tony has completed 166 events and Judith has completed 126 events. Tony has volunteered at Thetford parkrun 46 times and Judith has volunteered 7 times. Their slowest parkrun was 1 hour and 14 minutes. Tony said they were volunteering as tail walkers and were supporting an older gentleman who was using 2 walking sticks to complete the 5k course. Tony's fastest parkrun is 29 minutes and 48 seconds, Judith's fastest is 40 minute and 30 seconds. Both Tony and Judith have overcome some serious health issues which makes their journey even more impressive. Judith underwent treatment for Leukemia 10 years ago but the treatment left her with damage to one lung. Running has helped Judith with her breathing and boosted her fitness levels. She has become more confident with running and this year she feels fit enough to take on the Run Norwich 10k. Tony and Judith will be running the Norwich10k together to celebrate 10 years in remission this July and celebrate her 60th birthday. Tony used to spend too long behind the driving wheel of his car with a chocolate bar for company and had become quite unfit. Their daughter wanted to try parkrun so Tony offered to keep her company for a couple of weeks. A few weeks later Judith came along to see what it was about along with their son David, daughter in law Hazel and grandson in his buggy. Since starting parkrun Tony and Judith have taken part in numerous events from the great South Run in Portsmouth, The Kelpies Supernova run in Scotland and the Spitfire 10k at RAF Cosford. Tony and Judith will be taking part in various local events plus their big events, Run Norwich, Spitfire 10k at RAF Hendon and the Great South Run. Tony says "HMS Victory is so iconic to run past, everyone should do it once". Since Judith was ill they have supported the work of Bloodwise (Leukemia Research) in various running and cycling events over the UK and have raised in excess of

Tony and Judith Friend - Parkrunner of the Month

ÂŁ3000. Tony extends his love of running beyond parkrun and has been integral with setting up a social run, for walkers and runners of all abilities. The social run takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at 17:45pm from Iceland car park and distances completed range from 5k-10k. Tony always ensures the slowest participant is supported and not alone. Tony is popular with a lot of runners and has organised the Thetford Runners and Walkers group tops and teams at various local events. Are you a member of a local sports group?
