Thetford Celebrates Anglo Sikh Connections This summer a special festival will be held in Thetford celebrating one of the town’s most interesting cultural links. The ‘Festival of Thetford and Punjab’ will take place over 2 weeks in July, following a successful Heritage Lottery bid by Essex Cultural Diversity Project. Thetford’s connections with the Punjab, a northern state in India stem from Maharajah Duleep Singh, last Maharajah of the Punjab, who lived at Elveden Hall. International Sufi star Satinder Sartaaj has agreed to be the festival Patron. Satinder is best known locally for his portrayal of Maharajah Duleep Singh in The Black Prince film. Jonathan Curzon Chair of ECDP said, “We are keen to work with such a range of partners to deliver a high quality project that has been supported by Heritage Lottery Fund. The festival will be groundbreaking cross-cultural collaborations between diverse and East Anglian based artists or creative/cultural practitioners including dance, visual and performance art, literature, craft and theatre.” About Thetford magazine’s Assistant Editor Karen recently visited Gravesend Gurdwara, one of the festival partners. and was finally finished in 2016. It is a community Gurdwara that offers support across the Gravesend community. A thriving Day Centre has been established and caters for the over 60s. Towards the end of May the ladies from Ancient House Museum’s Knit and Knatter and spinning groups visited a group of ladies at the Day Centre. The ladies shared pieces of textile work that they had made, explaining how each piece was created and shared different textile skills. A joint textile project is planned and will be displayed in the window of Ancient House Museum during the festival.

The Gravesend ladies will make a return visit to Thetford on July 19th. The Thetford ladies also had a tour of the Gurdwara with Rajbir Kaur. Rajbir leads many of the schools visits to the Gurdwara and is delighted to be guiding visitors from Thetford. “This Gurdwara prides itself on being for the community. We all have a common end, we all come together and set our differences aside. It is a joy to be able to share this beautiful building and how we use it.” The Gurdwara also offers a wide range of sports including Boxing, Gatka, Kabaddi, Netball, Basketball, Football, Karate and running at its Guru Nanak Sports Club. Mukhtar Singh told Karen that sport was an important part of life at the Gurdwara. Local organisations have joined together with ECDP to create an exciting programme of events; Ancient House Museum will host a series of activities including free admission days on each Saturday of the festival. Casualty of War, a painting by well known Sikh artists, the Singh Twins will also be displayed. The festival finale will form part of Thetford Town Council’s River Festival on July 21st where Jugnu Bhangra Dancers will perform alongside Morris Dancers and you can be amazed by the skill of Ghakta (Sikh martial art) . 5,000 New Houses – The Town Boundary Change Issue Explained “I write as a Thetford resident deeply concerned about the implications of the new ‘Kingsfleet’ (urban extension) being excluded, from the start of the build, from the Thetford town boundary. Breckland Council has already started the second stage consultation and they clearly want the boundary to remain unchanged. Unfortunately, Thetford residents generally believe that they and their wishes are ignored by Breckland - for example the Bus Station - so let’s look at the plain facts surrounding this boundary issue: • The 5,000 Kingsfleet houses will definitely be built, with a population explosion of many thousands more. • Currently, Kingsfleet will be outside the town boundary and within the Croxton, Kilverstone and Brettenham village parishes, so their residents will pay considerably less council tax contributions • Kingsfleet residents will still be using the town and its facilities, so it’s only fair that they should pay the same as Thetford residents will have to. • If the boundary remains unchanged then a heavier cost burden for additional facilities and infrastructure will fall on the Thetford residents. Not fair.
The Thetford Boundary consultation stall at Thetford Market Place every Tuesday and Saturday until the middle of June
• If the boundary changes to include Kingsfleet this won’t affect the existing village parishes. We urgently need 5,000 ‘signatures’ DISAGREEING with Breckland that the boundary should remain the same. It must be changed to include Kingsfleet. We’re on the Thetford Market, Tuesdays and Saturdays and we need YOUR help!” Rob Butler, Thetford Resident For up to date information about the boundary review consultation, visit the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/401763200298832/?ref=bookmarks

Out and About Thetford
The Best Of Will The collaboration between Well Made Theatre Company (WMTC) and Thetford Academy has been hailed as a great success with plans afoot to continue the partnership. Described as the most unique classical performance to date by Well Made Theatre Company, the production successfully toured to two other venues along with the gala evening at Thetford Academy. Speaking about the collaboration Vince Gregory from WMTC said, “I’m very proud of the actors, I’ve Helen Thomas-Jones, Vince Gregory and Jane James (centre) with the been teaching and mentoring them and cast of The Best of Will after the Gala Evening performance integrating the group into WMTC. I’m delighted at how well it’s turned out.” Along with Emma Kelly and Barry Bailey from Thetford Players, regular WMTC members were joined by Daisy Wilson. An enthralled audience enjoyed scenes from some of Shakespeare’s most loved plays, Macbeth, 12th Night, Cleopatra, Richard III and A Midsummer’s Night Dream. Eryn Freeman, Emilia Scerri, Sapphire Flint and Abbey Walters joined past Sixth Formers, Jacob Bell and Connor Browne for the performance. Emilia admitted that they were all feeling a little nervous about the first show. Eryn said, “I’ve found working with the professionals great. I’ve done Shakespeare before but this was a new experience.” Sapphire continued, “I wanted to try something new, I’ve never done Shakespeare before or worked with a professional company.” Both 12th Night and A Midsummers Night Dream drew roars of laughter from the audience. Barry Bailey’s performance as Thisbe was highly entertaining “Before I did this, I didn’t understand or even like Shakespeare,” said Barry “It’s been like a light bulb going off in my head. I can now see the influences in modern comedy such as Monty Python., and I really enjoy it”. Macbeth kept the audience spellbound whist Cleopatra allowed the students to fully explore their roles. Directed by WMTC Assistant Director Jane James who said, “I’m really pleased with how the students developed their roles and the direction they took the scene in. It’s been a real pleasure working with them.” Head of Drama, Helen Thomas-Jones said the project had been a great success and had given the students the opportunity to experience a wide range of roles within the theatrical arts sector. Rotarians Launch New Club Thetford and District Rotarians presented plans to ensure the future of Rotary in Thetford to a large group at the Charles Burrell Centre, during the centre’s Community Business Weekend. The satellite group is aimed at young business people who would like more informal meetings and to give something back to their community whilst helping to develop their businesses. Speaking about using the CBC for the launch, Gary Goodchild explained, “We think it’s a worthwhile project, it’s marvellous for new businesses and we hope it continues long into the future.” Club President Brian Farrell explained the aims of Rotary and highlighted some of the projects the Thetford and District group have supported. “We are keen to support the new group in any way we can” Brian continued, “We’ve been in touch with another satellite group near by and we really think it’s the future, these days people are so busy with their work they don’t have time for formal dinners and lots of meetings.” The first meeting of the new group will be on Tuesday 12th June, 12:30pm at the Charles Burrell Centre. Alumni Talks Inspire Students Seven former students of Thetford Academy (including Staniforth and
Rosemary Musker High Schools) gave a series of short presentations to the current pupils of year 8 and 9 as part of the Take Your Place initiative led by NEACO. The Network for East Anglian Collaborative Outreach aim to inspire and help young people with little or no experience to engage with higher education. George Green, Daniel Wright, Andrea Farmer, Georgina Brinkley, Charlotte Patterson, Julie Dean and Jay Aldous all spoke about how accessing higher education opened doors and set them on their current career paths. Each speaker had a different story to tell, but were united in sending out the same message that studying hard and getting good GCSE grades is key to having as many options as possible once you leave school. Some of the speakers had attended University, some have made the most of work related training opportunities and one left full time study for an apprenticeship, this will give her the education, skills and work experience to step into a management level position within the construction industry. Jay Aldous, currently a 5th year student doctor at the UEA urged the pupils not to waste any opportunities. The afternoon finished with a question and answers session and a recap on the top tips shared during the event. THIS Celebrates New Project The Horticultural Industry Scheme (THIS) has launched ‘THIS Works’, a
12 month £26,000 project funded by LIFT (Local Investment In Future Talent Fund). THIS will match fund the project using other funding and sales of their produce to local restaurants. Guests and supporters joined Georgina, Tim, Craig and Duncan for a garden party to celebrate the launch, and hear how THIS has progressed over the past year. For the next 12 months THIS will work with 15 participants for periods of up to 4 months at a time with the aim of getting at least 7 participants into stable employment, whilst increasing the productivity of the produce grown at the project’s Thetford base. Speaking about the project, CEO Georgina Keatley said, “We are very grateful to Norfolk County Council who manage the LIFT grants scheme, this money will allow us to help people make significant changes to their lifestyles.” Helen Read from NCC responded, “We were really pleased to give funding to THIS Works. Georgina and Tim were early applicants and we have worked hard with them to prepare the application for the Brecks Local Action Group. I am looking forward to hearing about the progress as the project moves along.” The allotment site is now fully cultivated with the addition of 2 new poly-tunnels and a beehive. Georgina continued, “We are looking forward to our first colony of bees and are grateful to The Mulberry for their support in getting the beehives started.” Georgina then thanked Craig and Duncan for all their hard work so far this year , and Tim said he was looking forward to creating a Bee Experience once the new colony had settled in. Visit www.this.org.uk for more information about the project.

Refurbishments And Fundraising Continues At Centre Lots of developments have taken place since our last update with our Power to Change funded project. The three new office spaces in the library are very near completion and we are now taking enquiries for these spaces. We also now have an additional nine office spaces in the old school changing rooms. All of these new spaces once occupied will generate additional revenue impacting on the overall sustainability of the centre and increasing our benefit to the community. Our next phases are the development of our brand new toilets, roof repair and installation of solar panels to one section of our roof. Our fundraising total to date is £21,100 – with just under £16,500 still to raise. A number of fundraising events have taken place recently including a Ladies Night, Pilates Partner Play hosted by the Core Studio and we attended the East Anglian Game and Country Fair with our brand new gazebo. Our second Community Business Weekend was also held in May with the theme ‘local people, local power’. We were joined by around 40 people and businesses who attended a presentation delivered by the Rotary Club and a tour of the recent refurbishments. The Rotary Club very kindly sponsored two of our balcony chairs - another £550 towards our target!

Great Days Out At Country Shows The first country shows of the season have proved a great success. Despite the cold and wet weather crowds thronged to the second East Anglian Game and Country Fair held at Euston Hall. Thousands of visitors enjoyed a variety of countryside activities as well as great entertainment across the last weekend of April. The JCB Dancing Diggers headlined the main arena, performing in one of only three shows in the UK this year, and drew a big crowd of all ages which clamoured to see their unusual display. Also popular were the top class cookery demonstrations by local well known chefs, using locally produced ingredients and showcasing East Anglian produce as world leading. The forestry village demonstrated the skill and craft that tree surgeons need to have alongside some superb chainsaw carved sculptures. With 350 shopping stands selling everything from original art to farming equipment there really was something for everyone.
An award winning sheep at South Suffolk Show
Hungry visitors enjoyed a great selection of live music from local artists and groups in the picnic area, and a great selection of food stalls to browse and choose from. Tea Cards Tell A Story Describing himself as an enthusiastic amateur, Rob Butterworth’s talk to Thetford Probus members at the club’s May meeting proved both fascinating and unusual – it was based on a series of Tea Cards. Like cigarette cards, tea cards were once commonly included in packets of tea, but nowadays the Butterworth brand of tea can claim to be the last to give these cards. This unique way of promoting the quintessential English cuppa has proved a winner for the Bury St Edmund’s-based tea blending and coffee roasting company, run by his son now that Rob senior is retired. The cards also make a ready-made presentation for an illustrated talk as each not only feature attractive pictures painted by accomplished local artists, but carry the speaker’s carefully researched description on the subjects depicted. The cards have various subjects, all of which have become sought after by collectors, but for his talk, Rob chose to screen a series of 24 on World War 1, tracing some of the momentous events and notable figures involved in the catastrophic conflict. A dramatic picture of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife being assassinated set the scene, while other cards covered everything from the first Christmas on the Western Front when troops from both sides stopped shooting to chat and exchange gifts. Rob’s tea cards also brought into focus heroes and heroines with local connections; two soldiers of the Suffolk Regiment who won the Victoria Cross and Edith Cavell the courageous Norfolk nurse who saved the lives of soldiers from both sides, but was executed by a German firing squad for helping Allied soldiers escape. Among the other cards shown was a Zeppelin raid, Indian troops who bravely fought on the Western Front, the naval Battle of Jutland, the British army’s revolutionary tank and the new aerial battles

dubbed dog fights. The presentation concluded with cards portraying the vital part that women played in the war, not only in traditional fields such as nursing, but also as munitions workers and military despatch riders just some of the 50 occupations they were to do in place of men. It was something that was to change the role of women dramatically in years to come. After questions, there were complimentary samples of Butterworth tea for members and those keen to get started with their card collections were also able to purchase packets of tea.

Our June ‘Thetford Face’ is 19 year old Ryan Vickers. Ryan is currently studying at West Suffolk College on a level 3 Mechanical Engineering Aprrenticeship and making headlines in the world of British Superstock 600 racing. Part of the Mototeckniks Yamaha team, Ryan can race in his current class until he is 25 years old. He was given the opportunity to ride for Honda on a World Super Sport 600 curcuit at the end of May. Have you lived in Thetford all your life? Yes, I’ve always lived on the Abbey Estate and went to Norwich Road School followed by Rosemary Musker High School. Thetford will always be my home wherever I am; Thetford people have given me lots of support. Have you always been interested in bikes of some kind? I learnt to ride a pushbike by the time I was 3 ½ and I still enjoy mountain biking. I’ve always been interested in motorcycles in general because of my Dad. He did the world wheelie competition when I was around 4 years old. My Dad came third and it really inspired me to get on a motorbike. I started riding a small motorbike and by the time I was 7 years old I was involved in off road racing. I raced in the British Championships, the 2nd Red Bull Pro nationals and was British Youth Club Champion 8 times.

Oulton Park. I have a 24 point lead. My next race is my home race, British Superbikes at Snetterton on the weekend of the 15 – 17 June. Since I’ve been doing the British Superstock 600 people have started to recognise me because it’s on TV. At the moment I live a bit of a double life, I’m well known at race meets but just me in my every day life. Sometimes people come up to me if they’re interested in racing. Do you devote most of your time to motorbikes? I spend most of my weekends riding and train in the gym during the week. Motocross was mainly in East Anglia, but I have to travel further now for the British Superstock 600 circuit. We race from the end of March until mid October. I now have a mentor, Alan Carter who is an ex Moto GP racer. I met him at Silverstone Moto GP in 2016 and Alan has helped me get sponsors, plan my strategies and prepare for races. It’s been great for me but also for Alan, who told me that helping me has given him a new love for the sport. What’s the best thing about living in Thetford I like Thetford because it’s quite a small town but there’s lots of stuff going on. Plus, you don’t have to go far to be in the countryside if I want to go cycling - I love to get on my mountain bike and explore the forest.
Ryan celebrating after a succesful race
Who sponsors you locally? I’ve been really lucky to have support from some great companies in Thetford. Boniface Engineering, Vanilla Group, Thetford Autoparts, Vickers Motors, Body Concept Gym and Peels 4U have all been great. I’m also supported by Lomax Spiral Systems in Snetterton and Square Deal Storage in East Harling, Mototechniks in Stowmarket, Shoei Helmets and Yamaha. Without their support and that of my family I wouldn’t be able to race. What are your long term ambitions? Initially to finish my level 3 diploma and focus on racing as much as I can. In the long term I’d like to make enough money to be able to concentrate on racing as it’s hard sometimes to fit everything in! I want to go into Motor GP and race all over the world and then come home to Thetford.
Ryan competing at Brands Hatch
Have you had a lot of support locally? Lots of local companies have supported me, either financially or with bike parts. There are lots of motorbike fans in Thetford, and I have a big fan base here. I ‘ve also had a lot of support via social media. My high school were also very supportive, allowing me to have time off and giving me work to do at home or at races, especially doing my exams. I think I get support locally because it’s something different, so people want to get involved. My Dad does the mechanic work on my bike along with Marcus Hill our race technician. My Mum is involved too.

Get Ready For Open Gardens 2018 Thetford Open Gardens is growing thanks to the hard work of lots of people in the town, especially our gardeners, who welcome visitors from far and near to their own piece of nature tamed and fashioned to represent their vision of beauty. Surprisingly it is often people, who live on their doorsteps, who are amazed at what lies behind the garden gates. This year we have 11 new gardens to tempt you, with a cat called Dave and a dog that dances, bees making honey and lots of butterflies on the flowers. If you are feeling competitive, then you could try your skills at archery in one of our gardens, with an archery experience for 2 courtesy of Explore 4x4 up for grabs. (suitable for ages 14+ and additional fee of £2 which be donated to the Open Gardens total). Your day out is made easy this year by following the trail of golden balloons around the town as we celebrate one couple’s Golden Wedding and the sterling efforts of all our gardeners to make this a day to remember. Refreshments can be taken in many gardens, while you relax and enjoy the view.

We hope to have a truly golden year and raise over £10,000 for the hospice, and with your help we will. Admission is by programme - available from Thetford Garden Centre, Thetford’s Great Information

Gardening Notes For June June 21st is the longest day of the year and the extra light and warmth mean this is the best month for vigorous growth – of both your plants and those weeds! The downside is that the lawn will need cutting at least once a week. You can safely plant out any summer bedding and be sure that runner bean plants will survive – provided they escape the slugs. When the plant is a foot or more tall, they seem to lose interest – one of the reasons for starting plants under cover. If you have seeds in reserve, look out for gaps in the line; if the ground is moist newly sown seed will soon race away and I think slug pellets are justified for this situation. This is a good time to prune spring flowering shrubs such as forsythia. This stimulates the bush to form new flowering shoots and keeps it in shape for the rest of the year. If you prune in the autumn you cut off the flowering stems. You may also want to trim back the leaves of any phormium which got scorched by the savage blasts of ‘the beast from the East’. It took until the end of April for the damage to show but the plants will not die and new growth will be developing. These are difficult plants to trim with sharp points at eye level and cutting edges to the leaves – so eye protection, gauntlets and long-handled loppers would be the ideal (if you cannot persuade someone else to do the job). Take the prunings to the tip as they would take ages to decompose. There is still no charge for green waste and you can even buy sacks of compost made from the material brought in. On the veg patch you should be harvesting lettuce and radish and even early potatoes. You should resist harvesting asparagus from about the middle of the month so that the plants can produce fern to feed the roots for next year. A sprinkling of fish, blood and bone
Thetford resident Claire Vittles’ allotment is looking great this year!
will help this as will a mulch of compost if you have some available. Any time spent hoeing will ensure that water and food go to benefit the seeds you have sown rather than the weeds; the broken surface of the soil also makes it easier for water to soak into the ground which can bake hard and impenetrable in hot sun. The June meeting of the club is given over to our summer show. There is the usual emphasis on roses and sweet peas so the United Reformed Church should be full of fragrance on Thursday 28th June – do come and have a look. Setting up begins at 6.30 and judging at 7.30. The full schedule is in members’ handbooks and can also be collected from the Leaping Hare. Enjoy your garden! Sue Pilgrim

Men’s Shed Is Looking For Members! The Thetford Men’s Shed, a member of the UK Men’s Shed Association, invites men of all backgrounds and skillsets to join the movement in one of three Shed ventures. The Bike Shed is now two days a week at Thetford Men’s Shed “headquarters” in Exeter Way. Shedders are kept busy fixing and fiddling with donated bikes to make them suitable for resale, as well as doing repairs and servicing on customer bikes. Any profit from sales and repairs is put directly back into the Shed. For those green-fingered fellas, The Grow Shed offers an opportunity to dig, plant, weed and nurture. Spring is in full swing and the Shedders are making the most of the sunny weather, while it lasts, and the more help the merrier. The newest member of the Shed family is the Wood Shed which started coming into being at the beginning of the year. Based in an actual Shed at the Riversdale Centre in town, Wood Shedders are trying their hand at making items out of old pallets. These will then be sold to get some more income for the Shed. The Sheds are a fun and relaxed place to meet people, learn new skills and share knowledge.
If you or someone you know may be interested in joining a Shed, please get in contact using the details below or pop along to one of the sessions.

Where Are All The Rabbits? It might seem strange for a research organization that works on birds to be talking about rabbits but the British Trust for Ornithology not only produces national bird trends, it does so for a few mammals too, nine in all. 2,800 volunteers take part in the BTO/JNCC/RSPB Breeding Bird Survey, undertaking two visits during the spring and early summer to randomly selected 10km squares to record all the birds they see and hear. This has been the case since 1995 and has allowed scientists at the BTO to keep an eye on our breeding birds. As a result we know that some of our birds are doing better than others, and, more importantly, to what extent. We know that that since 1995 we have lost almost half of our breeding Cuckoos, and over half of our Swifts. Conversely, Great Spotted Woodpecker and Red Kite have increased by 126% and 1,475% respectively.
A Stone Curlew photographed by P Doherty / BTO
Whilst they are counting birds they also see other animals and counting those too seemed an obvious thing to do. From this we now know that since 1995 the UK rabbit population has fallen by two-thirds. In some parts of East Anglia, and indeed close to Thetford, some warrens have seen a fall of 95%. So what might be causing decline and what 1might the implications Premierthis Paving.qxp_Layout 12/06/2017 13:13 be?
Rabbit phtographed by John Harding / BTO
Locally, the Brecks landscape has been shaped by rabbits for around 1,000 years and they are part of the unique ecology of the area. Without them many of the rare Brecks plant species would struggle to survive, along with some of our ground nesting birds. The Stone Curlew is one of these and has its stronghold in the Brecks. A few of the short, rabbit cropped heaths in the area are now covered in long grass, a direct result of the loss of rabbit grazing. It is thought that one of the main causes is a virus called HRD, or Haemorrhagic Rabbit Disease, which results in the death of the rabbits in their burrows. It was first seen in the UK in the early 90s with its origin being in China. Myxomatosis is also still present in the rabbit population and can only add to the pressure they are under. There are areas in the UK and locally in the Brecks where rabbits still seem to be doing well, and there is hope for the future. Young rabbits seem to have some immunity and this may well grow throughout the population. If this happens, rabbits have the capacity to bounce back. Thetford Society At our May meeting we welcomed Rick Lewis a carpenter, joiner and historian. His talk covered the tradition building skills from the woodland to the finished frame of the house. To dispel some myths, he explained how the huge single standing oak trees found on parkland estates were less than ideal for building due to the irregular shape. Whereas closely planted oaks and limes have to compete for the sun and tend to grow straight and are generally ready for felling at about 25 years. Around the base hazel are planted, which also grow straight towards the light and can then be used for many other aspects of the traditional building process (such as wattle and daub walls). Print records from as early as the 15th Century show broad hand axes, 2-man saws and the mortice axe were the tools of choice. This tough, labour intensive practice continued through the centuries until the arrival of the industrial revolution which saw mechanisation across the country. Frame saws over trestles or pits were seen in pictures from France around the 1890s and in some parts of central Europe this traditional method of house building continued into the 1930s. Pictures from Germany show how sawmills would produce the raw materials into timbers for the craftsmen to lay out the pattern of the building on the floor whilst joints are cut and each one would have a specific number carved into its union point. This meant that the whole building frame could be manufactured, transported, then re-built on site – perhaps the first pre-fabs? Rick continues this traditional craft today and his passion for its history were evident in his enthusiastic delivery. Also at the May meeting we were reminded of the importance of the SUE boundary consultation and were urged to complete the forms that were available at the market stall on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Touching on the importance of careers fairs for young people today Carla Barreto, Director of Inspire Focus said; “It gives youngsters more information about options for their future employability in order to “give them a broader view of what’s available.” At Inspire Focus young people are provided with the “opportunity to build skills before they grow into a course of study or employment.” In addition to the careers fair, an Apprenticeship event was also held after school where both members of the public, students and parents alike were invited to learn about the possibilities apprenticeships hold in our area. As a sixth form student in my final year (year 13) my time at the Thetford Academy is coming to an end. Having had the opportunity to attend and participate in careers fairs throughout my time at the Academy, through beginning to end, prepared me to make an informed decision about my own future. The Honourable Patron of the Festival of Thetford & Punjab Dr Satinder Sartaaj “To be Patron is a huge honour for me. I hope to come to Thetford before my tour reaches Canada.”
Introducing the Festival of Thetford & Punjab 2018 is the 125th anniversary of the death of the last Maharajah of the Punjab – Duleep Singh. The Festival of Thetford & Punjab will be a cultural celebration and exploration of the story of Maharajah Duleep Singh and his cultural legacy. This includes his family, the political and cultural context of the time he was living, and how this has influenced Thetford and the surrounding area today. It is also a chance to further explore the under-appreciated links between Thetford and the Punjab due to this shared heritage. This provides opportunities for audiences around Thetford/Norfolk, Suffolk and across the UK to learn more about this story and to get involved in a range of cultural activities during the core Festival dates 7 - 21 July. The cultural legacy of Duleep Singh is as significant for the Thetford/Elveden area as it is for the Punjab. The young Maharajah was taken to England to separate him from any possible Sikh claims to the Punjab, and he ultimately lived lavishly at Elveden Hall near Thetford. He was a favourite of Queen Victoria who called him her ‘Black Prince’. A film called the The Black Prince was recently screened at cinemas worldwide. This has generated even more interest in the story of Duleep Singh and the many heritage sites that relate to him and his family in the Thetford area.

A Memorial Day To Remember
Fun Run for Dogs and Friends
The upcoming Desert Rats Memorial Day promises to be a great day out for all the family on 17th June.
Explore Paw x Paw on Sunday 1st July is a 5km woodland fun run or fun walk for dogs and their humans complete with optional obstacles!
Held annually, the event is based at the 7th Armoured Division Memorial, High Ash on the A1065 two miles north of Mundford. Organised by the Desert Rats Association, the Memorial Day is a must for those who enjoy all things 1940s or have an interest in Military History. Under the banner of ‘Making sure our history is not a thing of the past’ the event will mark the service of those during WW2 with a memorial service along with showcasing current Army regular and reserve units. Running from 10:30am until 3:30pm, military vehicles, 40s singers and a marching band will provide an exciting programme of entertainment alongside a wide variety of stalls including food and drink. This year the Desert Rats Association are raising funds to renovate the Sandhurst Desert Rat Memorial Stone and to incorporate it into a larger memorial to all the soldiers that served in WW2, Northern Ireland, both Gulf Wars, Operation TELIC and Operation HERRICK. The new memorial will be put in the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.
Located at the beautiful Elveden Estate on the Norfolk/ Suffolk border. You will venture through off road terrain and woodland – which means lots of exciting smells for our doggy pals! We want to support the team at ‘Our Special Friends’ charity because they are working tirelessly in Suffolk and Norfolk; they take away the worry of pet care when life takes an unexpected turn. The course is 5km, the ground is uneven and off road, therefore we let you (or your dogs!) decide the pace you want to go. Whether you’re a seasoned 5km runner looking to beat your personal best or if you would prefer to take your time and walk the course with your furry friends – it’s completely up to you! Don’t forget to wear sturdy footwear, whether that’s trainers or wellies. Ticket Prices: Human and one Dog - £15, Additional Dogs - £5. Humans without a dog - £10. Family Ticket (4 human and 2 dogs) - £40. Registration from 10am, set off from 11am. For full event details, Terms and Conditions and to buy tickets visit our website: www.explore-4x4.co.uk Click on the ‘Explore Paw x Paw’ button or e-mail: events@explore-4x4.co.uk

Sue Celebrates Leading Choir A loyal audience was enthusiastically greeted by Choir leader Sue Webber as she celebrated 25 years of leading the Methodist Family Choir. “It’s 25 years since Rus and I joined the choir. They asked me, and I said if Rus could come along I’d give it a try. And with that Rus’ singing career really took off, he’s sung at the Royal Albert Hall and Westminster Central Hall”. The programme for the evening was an affectionate look back at Sue’s time with the Choir and some of the achievements of the choir members. Ably accompanied by Margaret Gibson on the piano and church organ, the programme referenced Sue’s family and members of the choir. Starting with 1994 and celebrating singing at the Royal Albert Hall with the London Emmanuelle Choir, Sue selected a series of songs and hymns that marked a significant moment at the time. Along with the beautiful singing, Sue provided entertaining commentary throughout the programme, describing herself in 1996 as like the old woman who lived in a shoe – with so many choir members she didn’t know what to do. “Sometimes I didn’t, but I never let them know that.” Sue chuckled. By 2001, the choir was enjoying parties, trips out, shared suppers and a choir weekend. “We really were a family.” Sue continued. The following year, Marion reached the milestone of singing in the choir for 50 years. New members continued to join, Jayne told the audience, “In December 2004 I came to the choir carol service with my family. I decided I wanted to join, so in 2005 I did”.
Sue Webber being presented with celebratory flowers by Marion Hodson who has been in the choir for 62 years
The audience was then treated to a reprisal of Rus’ first solo keyboard performance in 2011. Appearing to play with great concentration, Rus soon had the audience giggling. “You only get out of life what you put in, don’t mention that rude word to me!” said Sue when the word retirement was mentioned whilst she reminisced about 2011, the year in which she had reached 20 years leading the choir. The evening came to a close with the first performance of Psalm 145, a piece especially composed by Sue and Rus’ daughter Sarah Adams.

Thetford Inner Wheel The club welcomed the District Chairman Gillian Smith to its May meeting. She reported on the very successful Annual Conference held in Bournemouth in March which took place in spite of the snow! The Association President this year is Liz Thomas from Great Yarmouth in our District. Gillian told us about the charity, Chicks, which she is supporting this year. This charity has homes around the country where children aged 8-15 who are carers, bereaved, bullied or generally disadvantaged can go for a week’s free holiday to enjoy themselves. President Jackie Clark presented Gillian with a cheque for her charity and also a gift of a Thetford Jigsaw Puzzle as a memento of her visit to the club.

Ask The Undertaker Each month we invite readers to submit questions to our resident undertaker - Mark Skinner. Here are some questions that have been submitted this month.
Sara – Thetford: “When my father passed away we were told that he should be embalmed. Will I have to be embalmed when I die?” Sara. The simple answer is that this does not have to be carried out, however sometimes we may recommend that a loved one is embalmed. This could be for a number of reasons, it could be that we need to prevent deterioration of the deceased or maybe that a loved one may want to rest at home prior to the funeral taking place. Sometimes we may feel that this process would improve the appearance of a loved one. We do not embalm everyone and would not do this without a family’s consent. If you would like more information about what embalming involves feel free to get in touch.
Arthur – Croxton: “I have noticed that you are encouraging people to make donations in lieu of flowers online, is there any benefit in this, and will I still be able to send a cheque to you as I have in the past?”
Arthur, if you are a UK tax payer you are able to gift aid the donation you make. Overall this is a great help to the charities as they receive additional funds. We set up a giving page in the online donation section of our website for each client and this is very easy to access and operate. So far it has proved very successful. For those people who prefer to donate by cheque or cash this will carry on as usual, so all options are available. If you have a question that you would like to ask Mark, please send it to: mark@mark-skinner.org.uk

‘Ministry Of Biscuits’ Performance by the Foundry Group Set in London, 1948, ‘The Ministry of Biscuits’ cast their sinister shadow over every tea time elevenses in the land. Thetford U3A The AGM was held on the 26th April in the Carnegie rooms. The new officers elected to the board of trustees are Catherine Dubois, Chairman, Peter Fenton, Vice Chairman and Sue Smith, Treasurer. The two new members who were elected to the committee are Rosemary Madders and Lesley Braund. After the closure of the AGM we were delighted to listen to a talk on security in the home by two firefighters. This promoted much interest and many questions from our members. It was however a surprise to find out that many homes did not have a smoke alarm. The Fire Service offers a service free of charge to installing, checking on old ones and replacing them. They encouraged people to contact them as it has been found that house fires are now very infrequent due to smoke alarms. We warmly thanked the firefighters who their very valuable time.

Dad’s Army’s Norfolk Roots 50 years ago, in May 1968, the first episode of Dad’s Army was broadcast by the BBC. Although this first episode received some lukewarm reviews, the series soon gained popularity. It is now one of the most beloved of our old sitcoms. Set in the fictitious Walmington on Sea on the south coast, it was actually filmed principally in Norfolk and Suffolk and mainly in the Thetford area. Dad’s Army was a colloquialism for the Home Guard, a local defence group comprising those ineligible for military service. Those either too old, too young or in reserved occupations. It had a mixture of humour and slapstick but it is the characters that endear it to us the most. Captain Mainwaring is the local bank manager and very pompous. His subordinate both in the Home Guard and at the bank is mild mannered Sargent Wilson, who went to public school and is actually more intelligent than Captain Mainwaring. Lance-Corporal Jones, the local butcher, is an old soldier but prone to panic. Private Walker is a cockney spiv who operates on the black market. Private Frazer is a dour pessimistic Scotsman who is the local undertaker and Private Godfrey is dim and elderly and lives with his sister. There is also the ARP warden Hodges and an ineffective vicar. The vicar gets caught in the middle of Mainwaring and Hodges dislike and determination to get the better of each other. The first two series were shot in black and white then subsequent series in colour. One episode broadcast once in 1969 was lost for forty- seven years. There still remains three episodes of the second series missing and two of four Christmas sketches. There has also been a radio show and a musical stage show. In 2016 a film was made. It was set in 1944, after the events that occurred in the series. Although different actors and actresses had to be used to those in the series, they very much kept to the character of the original sitcoms.

In June 2010 a life- sized bronze cast of Captain Mainwaring was unveiled, sitting on a bench by the site of The Anchor Hotel, Thetford. Cast and crew used to stay there sometimes during filming. Sadly, the hotel closed in 2006 and has now been demolished. The statue is impressive and in a lovely location down by the river. In 2013 Jones’s van was purchased and restored thanks to benefactors of the museum. Since then the museum has raised the money to pay for the van. Jones’ van is an iconic part of Dad’s Army and the opportunity could not be missed. It is housed in the Charles Burrell Museum, down the road. Walking tours are also available for a charge and incorporate the Charles Burrells museum too. Dad’s Army will always be a part of Norfolk, so it is well worth a visit to Thetford this year of the 50th anniversary of the first broadcast. Dad’s Army is what many of us grew up with. Its popularity continues to this day with the making of the film and episodes still being broadcast. Take a step down memory lane. Customised Brows It seems that we are not happy bunnies when our eyebrows look untidy! We have a steady stream of clients who fly into the salon regularly in a mad panic saying “Help! Can someone sort my eyebrows out?”. For such a small thing they certainly can cause major upsets. Most clients’ eyebrows need attention every 3-4 weeks to keep them looking pristine, we use a combination of methods from organic wax, tweezing and trimming to tinting the brows to give them more definition. Great also for clients with fairer hairs or to camouflage grey hairs. A patch test must always be carried out minimum of 24 hours before. Eyebrows frame the eyes and show our expressions so they are a very important part of how we look. Well maintained eyebrows can enhance the eyes making them appear more open, neat and giving the face a clear well balanced appearance. It is said in the Chinese face reading that brows that meet in the middle mean a person is bad tempered! Once someone has had their brows shaped professionally there is no looking back. It is hard to get the same effect at home without spending a huge amount of time and often one brow ends up thinner and then it is a battle to try and match them up! That’s when a fringe can come in handy!

Breckland Cats Protection You may remember that we recently ran a neutering campaign whereby anyone could have their cat neutered for ÂŁ5. Although I sent out Neutering Vouchers for over 140 cats, only half of them have been neutered. This is very disappointing, as we were giving cash in hand to get any cat neutered. Neutering has many benefits, as well as helping to reduce the number of unwanted cats in the UK. Male cats are more likely to get injured or catch diseases from fighting with other unneutered tom cats. They may become victims of road accidents since they travel many miles looking for a female. Male cats also spray smelly urine to mark their territory and attract females and they are at risk of tumours of the testicles. Once neutered they become 'homebodies' as they roam less and they are more unlikely to contract diseases such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus or Feline Leukaemia Virus. Unneutered females frequently become pregnant at four months of age, when they are still growing. They can give birth at 7 months old, when they still don't have all of their adult teeth. Females can have 3 litters of kittens a year which adds to the overpopulation problem. They will call and wail every 3 weeks during the breeding season until they become pregnant. Like male unneutered cats, females are more likely to contract diseases spread through sexual contact and are also at risk of cancers of the ovaries, uterus and mammary glands. Cats Protection recommend neutering at 4 months of age for males and females. All of our adult cats are neutered before they are homed and the adopters of kittens receive a neutering voucher to take to the vet when their kitten is 4 months old. If you need help with the cost of neutering, please contact us on the number below. We will send you a voucher for ÂŁ25 for a male cat and ÂŁ40 for a female cat which you
can take to any vet towards the cost of neutering. With the weather warming up, parasites such as fleas and ticks become more of an issue and become resistant to all parasite products eventually, so make sure you have the latest treatment available from your vet. We have a Summer Fayre on Saturday 9th June at St. Cuthbert's Church Hall in Thetford from 9.30am to 1.30 pm. Tombola, bric-a-brac, jumble, books, craft, jewellery and lots more. Hope to see you there. For advice or information, our number is 01842 810018. Rita Thompson

Attract, Train & Retain... A recent change of venue with greater capacity has seen The Thetford Business Forum (TBF) membership grow further to over 80 members now representing over 5,000 employees locally. Working with West Suffolk College, the TBF roadshow has been busy getting the message out that Thetford is a great place to start a career. Further, the TBF HR group’s collective buying of training supports the learning and growth of the young and aspiring. As an example, an ILM (Introduction to Management) course is being run in Thetford for the next generation of managers and through collective buying, a 50% saving was achieved – the power of working together.
Known for its advanced manufacturing competence and with fantastic road links the economic success of the town is growing. Central to the Cambridge-Norwich Tech corridor growth is also rapidly gathering pace. Advanced thinking around supply chain consolidation through blending manufacturing and logistics is already happening. Our membership is very positive about the future, although with some reservations around retaining the right people to support that growth Our next challenge is to work towards a quality of life for all employees new and existing. The Cambridge/Norwich effect on local residential rents is frustrating for young couples wanting a home of their own and to retain this next generation of employees we need to ensure their aspirations are achievable.
Thetford Business Forum display at the 2018 Mayor Making Ceremony / Civic Reception
In short we will be looking to work with Parish, Town and District Councils as well as developers exerting pressure when needs be, to address the shortage of affordable and in particular social housing in Greater Thetford. Young families bring energy and vibrancy to a community which has a knock on effect in town centres as quality of life improves. We can only achieve that if we can provide homes for them and to do that we need to work with town, parish and district councils recognising the importance of this commercial / social dynamic and making it a priority over short term land-owner and developer profit expectations. Thetford is a community and not a cash cow for the privileged few. This we believe to be the last piece of the jigsaw to ensure the town is Brexit ready and able to take advantage of global opportunities. The next few years are going to be exciting as challenges are met on the front foot. Mike Brown, Vice Chair, Thetford Business Forum The next Thetford Business Forum breakfast is on the 4th July. RudlingsWakelam Solicitors Challenging a will under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 There have been many examples reported in the press recently of wills being challenged by people who have been excluded from a will or feel that they have been insufficiently provided for. Such challenges are generally brought under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975 and are becoming more common due to increased wealth, cohabitation and second families.

Bowls Team Hosts Tournament Recently, short mat bowls teams from Harling, Hingham, Shropham, Thetford and Watton descended on the Main Hall at the Charles Burrell Centre to play in their end of season tournament. All games were played in a sociable, friendly manner on Thetford’s newly acquired mats. After 5 sessions and 20 games, Hingham were the eventual winners, with Thetford coming second (a pleasing achievement for this fledgling club). The Afternoon League was the brainchild of Eddie Bebee from Watton and is primarily for those players who are new to the game and/or do not play in other leagues, giving them the opportunity to play on other mats in different surroundings.

AGM Hears Of Club Success Thetford Town Boxing Club held its second Annual General Meeting (AGM) recently as it enters its third year. Chairman Pat Pearson told the meeting that the club was a success with many of the sessions running at full capacity, with 21 registered and carded boxers. The board chose not to increase membership fees as the club heads into its third year. This year will see the club’s first ever presentation evening for both squad boxers and recreational boxers help on June 9th. The club’s second home show will be held at the Charles Burrell Centre on the 3rd November 2018, the show promises to again be a sell out. A lot of the meeting was spent discussing fundraising with the club minibus fund going strong, after Tesco’s £2,000 ‘Bags Of Help’ scheme adding to the tally. This season Thetford town boxers have attended 16 different events from as far as Nottingham and down to Portsmouth, and the next two months are just as busy. The club had six boxers out recently. Ashton Thorpe fought a tough opponent in a skills bout while Declan White secured a stoppage victory in an action packed bout. Kyle Mckechnie had a tough bout with Khann from Dagenham showing a good display of skills but

lost on points, a return match to Dagenham scheduled for 26th May. Callum Mcelvogue and Tommy both had skills bouts, boxing impressively and outclassing their opponents.

Parkrunner Of The Month
Summer Has Arrived!!
James Scott, 23, pictured below, joined Thetford Parkrun in 2015. His journey is pretty remarkable because he has Cerebral Palsy and weighed almost 20 stone when he started parkrun.
The evenings are drawing out and there is more time for you to play 9 or even 18 holes of golf. Feltwell Golf Club offer a very competitive rate for Twilight Golf, from 3pm each afternoon. So why not come up after work or on a weekend, relax, play a few holes of golf and enjoy a pint and something to eat in the Clubhouse. The Clubhouse is open until 6pm on Tuesdays and Fridays, 9pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays and 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
James has managed to lose an impressive 11 stone in weight. He says that his slowest parkrun was 1 hour and 1 minute and his best 5k time is 28 minutes and 57 seconds - impressive improvement in just under 3 years of running. James said friends recommended parkrun to him and he has recently completed his 100th parkrun. On the day James reached his milestone, Melanie Sturman, Parkrun Event Director tweeted his story on Twitter. The story was shared globally, as far as Durban parkrun in South Africa. James inspired Chrissie Wellington, Norfolk GB Tri-athlete, World Record Holder and Head of Well-Being for parkrun Global to tweet her congratulations back to James.
For those of you who are new to golf we offer lessons on our excellent Practice Area, which boasts a full length Driving Range, Practice Bunkers, Chipping Areas and a fast Putting Green. There is also a 3 Hole Academy Course below the Practice Range for you to practice your short game. Call the Club on 01842 827644 or Jo direct on 07855 821116 for more details. There is something for everyone at Feltwell Golf Club, no matter how old (or young!) you are. For more information on Green Fees, Twilight Rates and Membership please contact the Secretary at Feltwell Golf Club on 01842 827644 or Denise Whiting on 01842 862079. We look forward to welcoming old and new buyers & sellers
Sunday Car Boot & Cafe Open from 8am to noon Plenty of parking available nearby
James now has the confidence to complete longer distances and has successfully completed various 10k events and may even attempt longer distances in the future. James was nominated for a TARA in 2016 and was one of three finalists for the 2017 event, Young Person Category. James says he likes running for the amazing outdoor experience and has made many friends enjoying the social side too. James would like to say “thank you” to the fellow parkrunners for their support and believing in him.

NEW Lego Club Lego clubs have started at a dozen libraries in the county, where they are proving popular with both children and adults. Now we have one at Thetford Library. Manager Kaleigh Garrod said: “Our new club has been a great success, the children really enjoy themselves – and it’s great to have so many parents staying to join in too.” What’s the connection between Legos and books, you ask? Promoting play contributes to early literacy development by increasing attention span, memory, creativity, and language and vocabulary skills. It also lays the foundation for logical mathematical thinking, scientific reasoning, and problem solving—things they’ll carry with them throughout their school years. The club runs every Friday 3.45 – 5pm at Thetford Library based on Tanner Street in Thetford.

‘18 All Out Music Festival After its most successful incarnation to date in 2017, the All Out music festival returns to Thetford Town Cricket Club on 30th June. By popular demand, and showing the band’s own appreciation for the reception they received last year, Jam tribute band The Jexit are again travelling over from Japan, specially for All Out ’18. They will be joined by a strong bill of local bands and artists, including festival regulars Ben Says Alright, who get better every year, and the slightly-older Mick & Doski. Other bands appearing will include Back Seat Passenger, B4 and Back 2 Front, with more to be confirmed. On the quieter side, singer-songwriters Curtis Cronin and Alton Wahlberg also make welcome returns. As well as the music, there will be face painting and bouncy castles for children, a licensed bar and the ever-popular selection of real ales for adults, and a cricket-themed coconut shy! Food stalls will cater for all tastes, including Thai, doughnuts, Indian and candyfloss. The event is the club’s major fundraiser for the year, contributing to long-term plans for improvement to the

infrastructure to support the development of facilities for the town. Thetford’s First and Sunday Teams have had a string of successful seasons and increasing numbers of boys and girls are joining coaching sessions. Local companies compete in the midweek, 8-a-side, John Mayes Shield. The hope is that the future will see a new clubhouse, an electronic scoreboard and more junior and senior teams giving more local people the chance to play cricket. Summer Is Coming! So, we’re now hitting what should be the summer months. A time of beer gardens, bbq’s and summer festivals. There’s nothing better than an ice cold beer or cider in the sun with the people you love around you and food cooking on the bbq!
A lot of people revolve their training around this time of year, usually a holiday, wedding or special occasion. It’s great that these events happen as they give us goals to reach. If you’re going away this summer or even just want to feel better in your body while the sun has got his hat on, here’s a few things I’d suggest to help you along your way:
The Old Rent Office King’s House, King Street THETFORD Norfolk. IP24 2AP
Track Your Consumption – I don’t mean count everything you’re consuming by the calorie. I mean just be wary of what is going in. Enjoy yourself but don’t be surprised with how you feel the day after if you’re having too much of a blow out. Size Matters - Smaller, more frequent meals will help increase your metabolism. Aim for three meals a day, with small snacks in between. Make sure you get lean protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats each time. If you’re looking for help towards that summer body, wedding or special occasion, please feel free to contact me – richard@tigerfitnessclub.co.uk

Stay Hydrated – It’s easy to get carried away with activities when the sun is hitting 30 degrees but it’s really important to keep your body and mind lubricated with H20. Jolt Your Workouts – We all go through the motions of working out. If you want extra results in your training, make the most of the exercise. Put the phone down between sets and really push yourself. Explosive sets are much more effective.
