Growkids Is Moving Growkids clothing bank was launched in Autumn 2020 as a project of Thetford Vineyard Church. With huge amounts of support from the local community, we set up a facility at the Charles Burrell Centre and have been giving out bags of pre-loved clothing, shoes and coats to families ever since with the help of our team of fantastic volunteers. We are soon to give out our 500th bag! As the cost of living crisis has compounded the financial damage of the pandemic, demand for our service is continually growing. We are so grateful for our time as part of the CBC family, but the time has come to expand! We are pleased to announce that we will be moving to York Way on the Abbey Estate - taking over the shop unit formerly used by the Thetford Men's Shed. The ‘Growkids Family Lounge’ will house our clothing bank, but aims to also be a place for families to come and connect, share their stories and get signposted to other support. We'd love to hear from any community workers (including midwives, community nurses and social workers) who may want to partner with us in the space. We are already making links with Citizens Advice and local toddler groups. As we increase our capacity, we would love to invite more members of the community to volunteer with us or give financially towards the project, follow us on Facebook or Instagram: @growkidsthetford for regular updates. We are so grateful to have received a fantastic £700 from Thetford Players recently - pictured top right. We have a wide range of volunteers from various places and ages, and will be holding volunteer information evenings if you feel that you might like to get involved. We need people who can create a welcoming environment, make cups of tea, fold and sort clothes, launder and clean. We are currently closed for general clothing donations as we relocate, but you can follow us on social media where we post appeals for items.

We are so grateful to have our rent for a year covered by the National Lottery, but we are going to need funds to fit out the lounge to make it a welcoming environment for families. If you feel that you could support us financially we would be so grateful. Not Just Books The first weekend in June marks the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and we’ve joined in the celebrations with our Jubilee themed window and we’re taking part in Breckland Council’s fantastic Jubilee High Street Trail to find the crowns around the district. Not only that but we have also launched a competition in partnership with Location, Location (Thetford) to win a collection of Jubilee themed books, just by sharing how you’re celebrating the Platinum Jubilee. To add to the events taking place in town, we will be holding our first Board Games Day upstairs in ‘The Den’ on Saturday 4th June 10am – 4pm. If you enjoy playing Board Games, come and join us. Bring your games if you like or come and play something new. Best of all: its free so bring friends! June 18th - 25th is Independent Bookshop Week and we’re really excited to be pulling together some fabulous offers to celebrate. We’ll have some great instore promotions (while stocks last) which include:

Orange Tree by Jokha Alharthi, the author of Celestial Bodies which won the International Man Booker Prize 2019. Bitter Orange Tree tells the story of Omani student Zuhur at a British University reflecting on her relationship with her grandmother who passed away just after Zuhur left the country. Bint Amir is not, we learn, related to Zuhur by blood – but by an emotional bond far stronger; as the historical narrative of the grandmother’s challenged circumstances unfurls, one narrative segueing into another as social status, wealth, desire and female agency are explored. The Children’s Indie Book of the Month for June is Fight Back by A.M. Dassu. Fight Back is a nuanced and accessible look at growing up as a Muslim in today’s Britain. This book will appeal to switched on kids everywhere with its clarion call for embracing diversity. We love the lead character, Aaliyah, and her stance against bullies by uniting her peers to halt the tide of hatred rippling through her community.

• Buy One, Get One Free and Buy One, Get One Half Price on selected items • Gorgeous giveaways • Exclusive Indie editions and signed stock We’re hoping to add to these offers so keep your eyes on our social media channels. Our Summer Books catalogue has arrived, so why not pop in and pick up your free copy and discover a special selection of this summer’s most enticing books ranging from Biography and Memoir, Fiction for the young and young at heart to Wellbeing. It’s perfect for picking those Summer Holiday reads. June’s Fiction Indie Book of the Month is Bitter

"I hope that was cleaned out before they brought it here!", "Why?", "It's a Blue Danube, a nuclear bomb, didn't you know?" Well, that's roughly how a conversation went between two members of the West Norfolk Aviation Society during an evening in May at Marham. My group was wending its way through a tour of the Heritage Centre, beginning at the First World War exhibits, moving through the WW2 artefacts and finally reaching the Cold War area. Our guides had kindly given up their own time to explain to us what we were looking at. And very successful they were too. They described the aircraft which had flown from Marham airfield over a period in excess of a hundred years: the biplane fighters sparring with Zeppelins, the Mosquitos 25 years later and the V Bombers and Tornados in more recent years. But Bunny, formerly an RAF Armourer, and Ken, who used to fly as a Navigator, took particular care to recall the contributions made by other people involved: the aircrews of course, the engineers, the parachute packers, the armourers, the cooks and particularly the relatives of those who were in harm's way when on Active Service.

During the intermission Chris, our Chairman and also a former armourer, produced refreshments, sandwiches and tea which he had made earlier. Our sincerest thanks are due to those two chaps for a fascinating couple of hours which we would like to experience again (our memories are not as good as they were!); perhaps in a couple of years' time. So, if you find yourself near Marham, check the museum's opening times on their website and spend an hour or two there. You will enjoy a very friendly welcome, a highly competent guide and a lot to learn! In the meantime, if you are interested in other subjects aeronautical, do peruse our website to see what we have to offer on the evening of the first Tuesday of each month in the Bowls Club at Mundford. www.westnorfolkaviationsociety.org.uk David Allen, WNAS

Home Show Success For Club Thetford Boxing Club are jubilant after the success of their sell out Spring Home Show, the first Home Show since December 2019. As promised they certainly showed how great they are, with a set of results to be proud of. With a new venue and format, spectators were treated to 18 bouts featuring fighters from Thetford, across East Anglia, and as far afield as University of Portsmouth and Birmingham. The show was sponsored by KM Eco with Barry Keymer presenting many of the trophies during the event. Danny Moloney returned as the announcer with Mark Alkins as the referee for the entire show. Other bout sponsors included Simon Long Removals and the Mayor of Thetford. Head coach Matt Dean said he was delighted to be back, “The Carnegie is a very different venue to what we are used to, and this show is different to our last, but I love the atmosphere and it’s really good to be able to host a show again.” Debuting for Thetford were Byron Neal, Bobby Zallums, Joshua James, Jacob Helzer and George Buckley. Byron and Bobby both aged 12, fought in their first Skills bouts; 3 rounds designed specifically for the development of young boxers with no winner declared. Thetford were first on the winner’s podium with Jhoni Huserek winning his bout against Elliott Camron from Norwich City ABC. Simona Zavicka quickly followed, winning her fight against Carris Williams from University of Portsmouth. As the bout sponsor, the Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Jane James, presented the trophies.

coveted award. “I feel wonderful, I trained so hard and proved myself today. Roni Dean encouraged me to take part in the show,” Simona explained, “she not only coaches me, but inspires me too. I’m really happy to get the result I did.” About Thetford about ad June 2018.pdf 1 25/05/2018 10:14:53 For more information Thetford Boxing Club visit: www.thetfordtownboxingclub.co.uk

John Tom Kerry was unlucky to lose his fight on a split decision whilst Gabriel Braz and Joshua James both won their fights, Gabriel Braz completely outclassing his opponent in the 3rd round.
