Thetford Flower Club
Church Summer Flower Festival
Thetford Flower Club held their monthly meeting with a workshop by well-known flower demonstrator Brenda Tubb from Great Ellingham, who showed members how to produce a “mock-tied” bouquet - an easier version of the more difficult “hand tied” bouquet. Before the workshop, Lynda Moore (Chairman) announced a £100 donation had been sent to “Dogs for the Disabled” and a £300 donation was presented to Mrs June Lewis at the meeting for a new local group “Life is for Living”. June told members how the group had been formed with initial funding from Norfolk Community Foundation (Silk Purse) to support local residents with mobility issues.
Thetford Methodist Church are linking with ‘Thetford Remembers’ with their theme for the Flower festival being: ‘There is some corner of a foreign field which is forever England’. Each arrangement will depict poetry and songs from World War 1. The festival will be open from 10am - 4pm on Friday 24th June and Saturday 25th and from 12pm - 4pm on Sunday 26th June linking with the Thetford Open Gardens. Refreshments will be available with proceeds going to the St Nicholas Hospice Care. Also open will be our new Peace Garden and Pole where you can sit and relax.

Open Gardens - 25th June 2016 Thetford Open Gardens is almost upon us and there are two days of activities this year. On Saturday 25th June there will be a concert in the garden of Lake House on Castle Lane. The concert starts at 6.30pm but the garden will be open from 5.30pm for you to enjoy your own picnic. Bring your own seating and food, but there’s no need to bring heavy bottles, as soft drinks and wine will be available to purchase. The music will start with a fanfare and then you will be entertained by two bands “Striped Socks” and “Frankie’s Amigo’s”, along with the Honington Military Wives Choir. There will then be an interval before the second half when Thetford Voices and Thetford Singers will sing songs for summer and the concert will end with another fanfare. Entry is free as all performers are gifting their time and talents in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care. Hopefully you will show your appreciation by giving generously in the collecting buckets as they pass around.

COMMUNITY CORNER
Details of forthcoming resident group meetings taking place in June are below:
Within Thetford, reducing crime including anti-social behaviour involves a number of different organisations and groups. The one that most of us would immediately think of is the police. But they work in partnership with others and in the Safer Thetford Action Group (STAG), this involves Thetford Town Council and Breckland Council, as well as Norfolk County Council and the Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service. STAG is also supported by residents’ groups and their representatives attend the monthly and public meetings.

Out & About Thetford Thetford Tesco Defibrillator installed
About Thetford was delighted to be invited to the Kilverstone store, and to find out about the new lifesaving equipment recently installed. Statistics from the British Heart Foundation show that over 30,000 people suffer a cardiac arrest outside of hospital in the UK every year, but less than one in ten survive. The new defibrillator is portable, making it available for anyone to use in the surrounding area, not just in the store. People Manager, Matt Garrod said “Anyone nearby who needs to use this can drop into store and pick it up, it’s simple to use and we are going to offer training sessions for people who want to find out more.” For information about the training sessions please contact Claudia Underwood, Compliance Manager by email: claudia.underwood@uk.tesco.com Sarah Douthwaite, Community Champion & team with the new Defibrillator in Thetford
Sing Your Heart Out! Karen enjoyed meeting a lively choir in Thetford who are looking for new members to join them . Discord have been singing in Thetford and the surrounding area for several years, providing a life changing experience for many, and is now known as Discord, the wellbeing choir. Meeting on a Tuesday in Thetford, currently the group are singing songs from different Decades. They are keen for younger singers to join in the fun and prepare for a performance in November. Speaking about her experience in the group Jackie said “I lost my husband just over a year ago & its been my lifeline. It gives you a reason to go out & see people.” Another member, Paul talked about how he has developed his singing “It was an article I saw in About Thetford about 2 1/2 years ago that made me come along. I’m now in the ensemble for Oliver by the Thetford Players.” The choir is lead by Musical Director Michael Dann, a well known local choir master. The first session is free and £6 after. Royal British Legion 95th Anniversary The Royal British Legion this year marks the 95th Anniversary since its formation on the 15th May 1921. It was amalgamated from the Old Comrades of the Great War, National Association of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers, the National Federation of Demobilized, and the Officers Association. In 1921, the very first Poppy Appeal was launched, on the 11th November and the first Poppy Day was introduced. In 1971, the Royal status was granted and all serving and ex servicemen and women were granted the right to be members.
Celebration Parade: To mark this occasion, the Branch will be holding a small parade in Kings Street on Saturday 16th July at 12 noon in the presence of the Mayor, and guests. The Town Crier hopefully will proclaim this celebrative event in his usual manner. The Branch will be joined with members of the local cadet forces and Legion standards from other areas and associations. Afterwards there will be a buffet and refreshments at the Legion Club in the Market Square. The Branch and Club will have an open day policy and members of the public are invited to come along and find out about the Royal British Legion and the work carried out by the members and find out also Brunning Electrical .qxl:Layout 25/11/2013 23:53 Pag about becoming a member of this 1great organization.
The Legion is responsible for the Remembrance Day parades and Poppy Appeal Collections throughout the country. Today anyone can become a member of this great national institution and help serving and ex serving members of the armed forces and their dependants.
Thetford Branch Anniversary Our own local Branch also celebrates a 95th Birthday along with the Royal British Legion. It is one of the very few in the country which holds this distinction of being one of the “First”. The branch was formed on the 18th July 1921 and has served this community all through its history. The branch has been located in many venues during the 95 years, Wereham House which had a branch and club, then moved to Fulmerston Road Community Centre for branch business only. From there it moved to the Ex-Servicemen’s Club for a while before finally in 2004 establishing the branch and club on the Market Place next to the Guildhall.

Thetford Inner Wheel
Open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm
Another very pleasant and very useful 6 months as far as meetings, the raising of money for charity, and interacting with Thetford Rotary are concerned. Our monthly speakers have included Grant Elliot who spoke on 'Monopoly, More than just a Game', a local undertaker and a local vet, and this month, Edward Wortley gave a most interesting talk about the Euston Estate. We joined Rotary at one of their meetings and at a fundraising Burns lunch. Approximately £2,000 has been raised this year for local and international charities. Donations have been given to Thetford Food Bank and sewing boxes and items of clothing to the International Aid Trust. With Thetford Rotary, a wheelchair and car seat were donated to West Suffolk Hospital for use by children who had undergone hip surgery and had casts on their legs to aid healing. Our 57th Birthday lunch, celebrating the 57th year since Thetford Inner Wheel was granted its Charter, was succesfully held in April Our speaker, Ian Toulson spoke about his addiction to cycling for charity. We are delighted that Thetford members Jenny Childerhouse and Marion de Bass have both been elected to the District committee for next year.

Life is for Living This cheery group of older adults have been enjoying the weekly exercise classes that meet on Fridays at 1.30pm in the Terrapin at the back of Fulmerston Church on Fulmerston Road. The initiative had started last autumn with funding from Norfolk Community Foundation (Silk Purse) to support local residents with mobility issues. The instructor Emma (second from right) is keen to encourage all those who want to be more active or to have more mobility, co-ordination and muscle strength. Some of the activities are chair-based and some standing but everyone is able to work at their own level. Gary McGinty, one of the members, feels he has gained some strength and can now manoeuvre round the house without losing his balance. He says; “I like the friendliness of the group and being encouraged to stretch my abilities.” There are refreshments available afterwards with time for a friendly, relaxing chat. For more information, please call June 07771637821. Living for Life group pictured below.
A Mobile Chemotherapy Unit Near You Worshipful Master Mason Martyn Jordan and members from Yare Valley Lodge in Norfolk visited the West Suffolk Mobile Chemotherapy Unit in Thetford to present their cheque for £600 in support of the Hope for Tomorrow charity. Martyn’s wife Angela suggested her Ladies Night might be just the occasion to support the charity and the work it does in providing the mobile unit to West Suffolk NHS Trust to treat cancer patients closer to their own homes.
Martyn said, “I know first hand how traumatic it can be for cancer patients who are reliant on others to transport them home following treatment. The Mobile Chemotherapy Unit alleviates that by coming to a location near them, saving hours of stressful travel and waiting time at the main Oncology Centre. The West Suffolk Mobile Chemotherapy Unit is currently providing cancer treatment to patients in Thetford at the Healthy Living Centre on Tuesdays and Fridays and will be visiting Newmarket and Sudbury in the near future.

Wild Walk in Thetford with the RSPB Why not join us on our next monthly wildlife walk starting at the Captain Mainwaring statue on Bridge Street in Thetford on Sunday 12th June at 11 am? The walk lasts about 90 minutes but recently our walkers have wanted to go on a bit longer; it’s down to you! We’ll be taking a trail through some of the fantastic wildlife habitat in Thetford, looking for birds and other wildlife. Whether you are an expert or beginner, adult or family with budding young naturalists, all are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Wear stout footwear, wrap up for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them.
Pied Wagtail photographed by Andy Hay
We see plenty of other wildlife on our walks around Thetford and we even met a walker coming in the opposite direction who had spotted an otter along the river. We identified brimstone and orange tip butterflies as well as holly blues so if you’re a butterfly or plant enthusiast, please do come and share your experiences. The walks are turning out to be a delightful, informal way of getting out and engaging with nature, sharing wildlife stories and just having a chat so if you’re single, a couple, or a family, we look forward to seeing you there to help us add to our tally of birds and other 1st Choice Locksmiths _Layout 1 09/12/2015 12:40 P wildlife around Thetford!
These wildlife walks are free but donations are welcome! There is no need to book but for more information, contact 01842 753732 or email us: thebrecks@rspb.org.uk There is always something to see and at this time of year, much of our time has been dedicated to listening to birdsong. On our last walk we were able to listen to a blackcap and garden warbler singing at the same time which gave us a great opportunity to compare the very similar songs of these two summer migrants. We also picked out common whitethroats and chiffchaffs. This is a time where many young birds are around so it’s a great opportunity to identify birds that have recently fledged and to learn how they look different from their parents (and even sound different!). If you don’t know what a young robin or starling looks like, don’t worry we can start with the basics! May’s young birds included some recently fledged grey wagtails flitting around looking for insects on the river, some gosling Canada geese and Egyptian geese as well as a mallard trailing a rather large family. This is also a good time to identify the males of duck species in their handsome breeding plumage as well as getting to grips with their rather less colourful female partners before the males start moulting their colourful feathers and become a little harder to recognise.

News from Thetford Probus ‘Star of Roses’ Homes in on Another Star As a nine times winner of Thetford’s Horticultural Society’s Rose Competition, Joe King loves this quintessential English flower, but he is unlikely to be cultivating many now that he has returned to his roots nearly 5,000 miles away. After half a century in Europe, most of which have been in Norfolk and Thetford in particular, where he met his late wife, 83-year-old Joe, a Texan and former Master Sergeant in USAF, has headed home to the Lone Star State.
Picture: Joe King pictured with his Probus friends at the Club’s monthly lunch at Mildenhall’s Riverside Hotel, which was his farewell event before leaving for the States.
Joe said: “I didn’t plan to return, but being a widower with no family here and having suffered a minor stroke, I thought it was about time to make the move.”
it was from the then USAF Lakenheath base that he eventually retired in 1971, with 20 years’ service, having joined up as a 19-year-old. Joe’s move to Texas sees him taking up residence in a retirement village close to a USAF base at San Angelo where, as a retiree he is able to use the recreational and leisure facilities.
Naturally, it’s been a big decision and Joe concedes that he will miss many things in his adopted homeland, not least friends and neighbours in Abbeygate where he lived for 43 years. Joe was a member of the Horticultural Society for many years and a keen competitor in the local Cribbage Leagues played at the Rose & Crown. He was also a member of the town’s Probus Club for nearly 20 years, enjoying the camaraderie of fellow retirees from all walks of life.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Gardening Notes - June The major event of the month for gardeners (and nosey people) is Open Gardens Day on Sunday June 26th. It is so interesting to look round, both the big and grand and the small and intriguing, and of course there are wonderful refreshments to be enjoyed. I can also guarantee you will meet friends and acquaintances on your way; this really is the most social event. It is worth buying your booklet in advance so that you can plan your route; there will be too many to see them all so you can spend an enjoyable hour or two deciding on a route which will include old favourites and new delights. All profits to the Hospice – so look out for the raffle tickets and collecting tins. It is a real achievement to bring your garden to show state on a particular day. For lesser mortals who would still like to have their garden looking good for a family get-together or just the weekend, here are a few tips. Do your weeding, trimming etc in the week before and, if you want to splash out, put a few tubs with something bright like marguerites or pelargoniums in any gaps or dull areas. Then walk round removing empty plant pots, half-bags of compost etc and mow the lawn the evening before your event. This will collect any loose leaves and whip the tops off the daisies (and dandelions in our lawn) leaving a fine setting for the borders. If you have bushes overhanging the lawn that looks most attractive (and even clumps of nettles look good at a distance). Then put your garden chairs in groups so that there are shady and sunny sitting places. And if it rains, this will still look pretty good through the window! I hesitated over using the term pelargoniums as we all usually call them geraniums. They are such bright plants and survive with very little water. There must be room for them in every garden. However the true geraniums have a lot to recommend them too. These are hardy plants that spread with enthusiasm in our poor soil. The flowers are less showy than the pelargoniums but the leaves are very attractive with a great variety of feathery or divided shapes. They make dense clumps which look
good even when there are no flowers and these clumps can be divided and spread round the garden or given to friends. In the kitchen garden you should be getting strawberries and the first new potatoes. What wonderful flavours! It is worth earthing up the maincrop potatoes again to prevent the top layer of tubers from spoiling. This takes out weeds too so is good for keeping the ground clean. If you are planting out winter brassicas there needs to be a considerable space between rows so plant fast growing plants like lettuce or radish in between as they will be long gone before the sprouts or broccoli need the space. You should be planting out runner beans and courgette plants now. If you forgot to set the seeds, you can buy young plants at a nursery or on the market and catch up that lost fortnight. These are thirsty crops so land with plenty of compost to hold the water is the ideal. Runner beans are traditionally grown up bamboos in rows or a wigwam but they will grow up a trellis in your garden too and even thrive just scrambling about at ground level. I have picked some grown like this at a PYO farm and must admit the pods were rather curly – the traditional straight shape must owe something to gravity in their usual way of growing. Second only to Open Gardens, the club Summer Show is a most wonderful day. The main items on display are roses and sweet peas and the scent is amazing! This year the show is on Saturday June 11th at the Methodist Hall. After the setting up and judging, the show is open to the public from1.30 until 3pm, with the prize-giving at 2.45. Do come and have a look. No evening meeting this month as we are off on a jaunt to see what they’re up to in Essex. Sue Pilgrim Deadline for the receipt or articles to be included in the July edition will be the 15th June 2016

West Thetford Community Fly-tipping Project Report Firstly, a quick update on the wooded area at the top of Barnham Common: Serco have started to remove the fly tipping but this is going to take several weeks to complete so please be patient those of you who are keeping an eye on progress there. I organised a ‘flash litter pick’ in the area last week in order to allow Serco to concentrate on removing the larger items. Thank-you to those that assisted, including Councillor Chris Harvey - pictured top right with myself. Six weeks ago I went to investigate a growing fly tip on the opposite side of the road to Sainsbury’s. This can be seen clearly from the road and will be the first or last thing many people see of Thetford so obviously I wanted to arrange for it to be cleared quickly. As I walked into the small car park area I was faced with a pile of dumped tyres and plastic tubing as well as litter from packed lunches. Beyond this and down the bank was absolute carnage! Fifteen or so broken televisions, broken beds, sofas, a fridge, bags of household rubbish, rubble, clothing and much more! (picture below).
Barbara & Chris helping to clear the ‘Navarino Belt’
only add to the poor view of Thetford that some have. If you do happen to notice vehicles in the parking area and fly tipping taking place, please try to make a note of number plates and report as soon as possible. I hope to be able to give a more positive update next month. Crack On Foundation If you have good condition items that you would like to donate to Crack On please give them a call. Please DO NOT leave them outside their premises without their permission. THIS IS FLY TIPPING and you will leave yourself open to a fine. Their contact number is: 0844 372 7496 Don’t have a computer or the know how to report issues such as dog fouling, broken street lights or fly tipping? Please contact me and I will be more than happy to help you with this during a Coffee Morning held at Fulmerston Church during term time. Call me on 07835316370 to arrange a suitable time slot. Thanks, Barbara Bysouth If you would like to assist with litter picking in your local community, please contact Barbara for more information on 07835 316370
My first port of call to report this monster fly tip was Breckland Council who said it was not their responsibility and that I should contact Norfolk County Council Highways. They said it was not their responsibility either and suggested I contact X, Y & Z. I have been passed onto and spoken to nine different organisations, some of them twice. As you can imagine, this has taken many hours of phone calls, emails etc. just to get really frustrated and back to where I started from. This is a real hot potato that no one wishes to take the responsibility for and I can understand why as it is going to cost hundreds if not thousands to clear the site. However, in the meantime, we have a really ugly pile of rubbish that is continuing to grow by the day and will

Keystone Open Abbey Cafe
Musical Fun from Thetford Voices
Wednesday 8th June sees the relaunch of the Café at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre in Exeter Way. Over the past months, Keystone has been talking and listening to local residents to find out what they want in the centre – and reintroducing a café was a main priority. The café is part of Keystone’s reinvigorated commitment to the Estate. Other activities at the centre are growing with Zumba on Monday mornings, Kickboxing on Tuesdays and Saturdays, Bingo on a Wednesday, Aspire sessions for young people on Wednesday evenings, Young Enterprise on Thursday evenings, Art Recovery Project on Tuesdays and sessions delivered by ASD on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Last month, Keystone also relocated its Green Bikes shop to York Way which is now open Tuesday to Thursdays – for new and upcycled bikes and bike repairs. The Abbey Café opening will end a 5 year break since the last café closed on the Estate. It will work closely with other projects running from the centre.
Thetford Voices are now booking for their Summer Singing Workshops on 2nd & 3rd August.
Louise Humphries Keystone’s Chief Executive said “This is another great opportunity for Keystone to reconnect with its local community and offer new and enhanced services that local people want.”
As in past years, the course is based at Thetford Grammar School and with the generous help of our sponsors Cynthia Della Hoy’s Croxton Charity and the D’Oyly Carte Trust we are able to keep course fees low. They are £10 for the Main Course (£5 for a single day) and £3 for Toddlers’ Hour and the harmony session.
The café will initially be open Tuesday to Thursday from 9.00am to 2.00pm serving breakfasts, drinks, snacks, hot and cold lunches. So pop down and see what all the fuss is about! Of course, huge thanks to the funders – Breckland District Council for match funding the capital work; Cynthia Della Hoy’s Croxton Charity who are funding a staff member to get the systems and process in place and Breckland YAB who fund the young people’s activities. Visit www.aboutthetfordmagazine.co.uk for latest news and information
Over the two days 6-16 year olds come together to rehearse a varied group of songs on this year's theme and perform for friends and family on the last evening. And this year's theme - Fun (fun, fun) & Games promises plenty of up-tempo numbers. Everything from Caribbean singing games to Californian pop. There'll be a touch of samba for the Rio Games and good time subjects ranging from summer sports to all the fun of the fair. Songs are chosen to suit the spread of ages and experience and this year Miles Granger, an acclaimed songwriter and workshop leader from the Cotswolds (we’ll include some of his songs), joins local song leader Sarah Skinner to direct the programme. Sarah will also be running her popular Toddlers’ Hour for 3-5 year olds at 10.00 on Tuesday 2nd, while older students -15 and over -are invited to join a mixed voice harmony session from 4.15 - 5.45 that same evening.
Full supervision is provided by an experienced CRB validated team over two friendly days of good singing. We look forward to old and new members joining us in 2016. To sign up and for further information, pick up a Booking Form at school, from Thetford Library or the Leaping Hare, telephone John Weeks on 01842 820060 or email: thetfordvoices@gmail.com

THETFORD TOWN COUNCIL
Councillor Terry Jermy elected as new Mayor of Thetford The Mayor Making Ceremony on 10th May in the Guildhall saw Cllr Robert Kybird and Mayoress Glynis Irish handing over to Cllr Terry Jermy and his consort Miss Corinne Fulford. The ceremony was very well attended by the public who enjoyed music from the Grammar School Choir and Natasha Godfrey. Following this, the Annual Town meeting took place when the Council reported back on the work of each of its committees.

Redcastle Play Area On Wednesday 18th May, six companies presented their proposed designs for the new Redcastle play area to local residents at the Meet Up Cafe. The designs had been available for viewing since the previous week and over 200 people had voted on their favourite design. Once the votes have been counted the tender will be awarded and the winner published on the Town Council’s social media and website.
The Thetford ‘mace’ on display at Mayor Making
‘Inspiring young’ chosen as theme
The Council recently took on ownership of nine play areas in Thetford from Breckland Council. Many are in need of urgent repairs and upgrading. The Council is keen to work with local residents’ on the plans, through residents’ groups and would urge people to contact their local group if they would like to discuss their own local play area (see ‘Community Corner’ on page 6).
Councillor Jermy announced that his ‘theme’ for his Mayoral year will be ‘inspiring young people’. This is in part because it is believed that Councillor Jermy is the youngest Mayor of Thetford in its more than 800 year history of a Mayoralty. During the year he will be raising funds to support local organisations that support and inspire young people. He has recruited a number of ‘Ambassadors’ to support his year - these are people who went to school in Thetford who have now gone on to have careeers of their own. They’ve agreed to visit local schools and youth groups and talk about life growing up in Thetford and what they do now. If you have a community event or activity that you would like to invite the Mayor to, please contact the Civic Secretary, Kerry Leader on 01842 754247 or email: mail@thetfordtowncouncil.gov.uk

To Scrub Or Not To Scrub?
Halcyon Days
Does exfoliating help with the health of my skin? This is a question we are often asked in the salon. The fast answer is yes– exfoliation will help the health of your skin!
Skin Care & Laser clinic
Skin exfoliation improves the quality and tone of the skin by assisting in the removal of dead skin cells from the surface. In fact the human skin produces about one million skin cells per minute, which equates to over five billion skin cells per day! As our skin cells renew, the old surface cells harden and lose moisture, they eventually detach from the skin to allow new cells to come through.
IPL Hair Removal IPL Skin Rejuvenation Permanent make up Dermalogica Facials Opi Nail Treatments
These dead cells don’t always fall off very effectively, meaning they can dry and dull the skin’s surface and cause clogging and congestion. It’s important to have both professional and at- home exfoliation so that these dulling skin cells can be effectively removed and newer cells are revealed giving a fresher, healthier appearance.

It is always important to follow recommendations of your skincare therapist for optimum results. Exfoliation may not be the best option for some, especially if your skin has been sensitised, as it may further compromise your skin’s natural protective barriers.

Beauty Geek Column by Caroline King
• Strong cooking odours: Add 2 drops of clove, cinnamon and citrus essential oil into a pan of boiling water. Turn down to a gentle simmer; rid the air of strong cooking smells. • To clean burnt on food to pans: Add a few drops of lemon oil mixed with boiling water to remove burnt on food to cooking pans. • Shoe smells and foot odours: To eliminate the odour of shoes by adding 2-3 drops of tea tree oil and lemon oil directly into the shoes to soak up odours. • Carpet cleaner: Mix together tea tree essential oil with Borax to make a handy homemade carpet cleaner. • Freshen up the fridge: To add a lovely fresh, clean fragrance to your fridge mix in with water a few drops of lime, grapefruit and bergamot essential oils whilst wiping down the inside of the fridge. • Wheelie bin freshen up: To help eliminate strong smells from your wheelie bins add to a cotton wool ball lemongrass and tea tree oil and place in the bottom of the bin. This will fight odours and keep the insects/ flies away. This is also good to use in the kitchen bin. • Bathroom freshness: Place a cotton wool ball behind the toilet with 2-3 drops of lime and lemongrass essential oils to keep the bathroom fresh and clean smelling. • Kill pests: Add 3 drops of orange and clove essential oils to water and place in a spray bottle and use as and when needed to kill nasty pests.
Essential oil guide for cleaning your home This month I want to share with you the wonders of essential oils and show you that not only are they a wonderful aid in the beauty industry for well-being and therapeutic purposes, also, that they have great uses around the home for such an inexpensive way and using a minimal amount of the product. Your homes will have a beautiful fragrance with uplifting and wellbeing benefits. • All-purpose cleaner: Add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil and lemon oil into a water bottle with warm water and use as a natural disinfectant for counter tops. • Reduce tension and anxiety: Add 2-3 drops of lavender oil around the house to reduce the feeling of stress. Or wipe over light bulbs gently with your favourite essential oil. This will dispense a lovely aroma around the home once the light bulb starts to warm up. • Natural insect or mosquito repellent: Rub 1-2 drops of lemongrass oil and eucalyptus oil with coconut oil onto your wrists. Or add into a spray bottle and spray onto desired area when needed. This acts as a natural and pleasant smelling insect repellent. • Vacuum cleaner: Add 3-4 drops of your favourite smelling essential oil into the vacuum bags before using for a beautiful fresh smell that will fragrance the house whilst you vacuum.
As always, I love to hear your feedback on each month’s feature. Please get in touch via my website www.steppingstonestrainingacademy.co.uk Best wishes, Caroline King - Beauty Geek

When Personal Debt becomes a problem – Local help is available Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centres literally save lives. They keep families together, relieve stress, restore health, keep people in their homes and provide friendship during difficult times. When financial trouble hits, it’s easy to feel alone and like no-one can help, however CAP really can help, and is already helping hundreds of people who call up every week - CAP has a life-transforming mix. Every year more than 16,000 people access debt help across the UK and 7,250 people each year are visited in their own homes. More than 2,500 people go debt free each year through CAPs free service. Local churches partner with CAP to bring this service to people in their own homes, negotiating with creditors and supporting people all the way until they become debt-free. This whole service is free of charge and available to anyone regardless of age, faith, gender or background. Of over 300 CAP Debt Centres across the country there are now four in Norfolk and the Mid Norfolk Centre also covers five market towns, including Thetford. This means that local people can access the service, which is recommended by TV’s Money Saving Expert, Martin Lewis.
the phone rang. Working with CAP has given me relief. I now know that I don’t have to be afraid and I have regained my self-esteem.” Mid Norfolk Centre Manager Heather Nunn (pictured above) said, “Every week we see people who think there is no way out of their money problems and every week we offer them a solution that works. If you are struggling with debt then there is hope. We can help you.” To find out more, call Christians Against Poverty’s freephone number 0800 328 0006 or visit: www.capuk.org

Citizens Advice Bureau "My father recently had a stroke and I have cut down my working hours to care for him. He receives sick pay, but we are struggling financially. Is there any help available for us?" Financial support is available for people when they become ill, as well as for their carers. What is available will depend on your circumstances. Your father may be eligible for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) to help with his daily living and mobility costs. His eligibility will be assessed on how his condition affects him, and what support he needs. To apply for PIP, your father can call the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and then complete the form he is sent. He can request a form by post, but it is usually better to start the claim over the phone, as PIP payments are backdated from the day you made your claim. There may also be help available for you as his carer. Carer’s Allowance is a financial assistance for people who have less time to work because they are caring for someone. If you earn £110 a week or less from your job after tax, and care for your father for 35 hours a week, you may be eligible. You can make an application on the gov.uk website.
To claim Carer’s Allowance, your father needs to be in receipt of the component of PIP which covers living costs (as opposed to mobility costs). If you need help or information on applying for any of these benefits, contact your local Citizens Advice or go online at: www.citizensadvice.org.uk If you need advice on this or any other issue, please visit our website www.citizensadvice.org.uk, or pop in to see us. We are open from 9.30 a.m. to 2.30pm, four days a week (Tuesday to Friday) and we are based in Breckland House, St Nicholas Street, IP24 1BT (opposite the new bus station); telephone 01842 752777.

Thetford Society The May meeting welcomed Kate Brewster and her friendly dog from the Dogs Trust. She spoke of the history of the charity (formerly the National Canine Defence League) which is the largest dog welfare charity in the UK. The local centre at Snetterton rehomes dogs and we heard of the superior accommodation in which dogs are kept and the range of activities on offer for them until a new home is found. The next meeting is on June 7th at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church when Lord Iveagh will talk about the work of the Elveden Estate. New members always welcome.

Breckland Cats Protection We recently had a very upsetting story. A pregnant cat was taken into a vets struggling to give birth to a dead kitten, leaving the vet nurses very traumatised by her suffering. As the owner couldn’t afford to pay for any treatment she was handed over to us. The vet immediately took her to theatre and under anaesthetic removed the kitten, but he found there was a live kitten still inside her which he removed by caesarean section. She was neutered at this time too. The next day mum and kitten were doing well. She is now in our care and her fosterer has called her Hope and the kitten Harry. They are both tabby and will need new homes in about 8 weeks time. Hope is a very friendly cat. She loves cuddles and lots of attention and is such a good mum that she has taken on two other kittens from another mother cat in our care. They now have 3 kittens each which is much better for both of them, especially Harry who needs the company of other kittens when he is a bit older. However, if Hope had been neutered in the first place, she would not have gone through such a terrible experience. Also in our care are some adult cats that would love to have a forever home. Lulu and Lady are 8 year old sisters and have always been kept inside. When it was discovered that the new baby was allergic to the cats, they came to us. They are very sweet cats, and I am sure they would love to venture outside. They may be wary at first, but with patience they would start to enjoy the sunshine and the big outdoors. They may be homed together or separately.

one of our pens and is not happy being confined all the time. However this cat cannot be homed with children under 12 and needs a patient and understanding owner. All our cats are neutered, vaccinated and micro chipped. The adoption fee is £50 which helps towards our huge veterinary fees. You can call us on 01842 810018 for information, advice or help with the cost of neutering. Calling all Landlords and Tenants Do not get caught out by the new EPC standards Despite the scope for argument, MEES do not necessarily need to be a source of confrontation. Both landlord and tenant can benefit from the regulations where a co-operative approach is taken. On the one hand, a landlord should be pro-actively looking to ensure that the asset is protected against the rising thresholds of energy efficiency, the financial penalties associated with non-compliance and the reduction in value of buildings that do not comply with MEES. On the other hand, a tenant will benefit from reduced outgoings and better efficiency, while keeping in mind concerns addressed above should they have the ability to underlet. Existing tenants may therefore wish to harness a strong relationship with the landlord to achieve the benefits early compliance can bring.

Jason Sidney - Trainee commercial property solicitor suggests Landlords and Tenants adopt a co-operative approach before the new energy performance regulations come into force. Commercial_Property_2016.indd 1
10/05/2016 10:52
F
rom the 1st April 2018 it will be unlawful to grant a new lease of energy inefficient commercial or domestic properties in England and Wales. The new regulations, which have no impact on sales, set out minimum energy efficiency standards (MEES) and in essence make it unlawful to grant a new lease of a property that has an energy performance rating of below E.
While there is still plenty of time before the regulations come into force, many landlords are quite sensibly assessing the need for a proactive approach to evaluating and confronting the risk MEES present. It is also important that tenants are fully aware of these approaching restrictions, and the implications it could have on their new or existing lease. Only then can both parties make an informed decision and reap the benefits from such awareness in commercial negotiations.
Fundamentally this seems like a landlord problem – the legal obligation to comply, and the penalties of non-compliance fall at their door. However, the new rules will have ranging implications on both the grant of a new lease and, in certain cases, under continuing leases. For new leases the effect is obvious; for continuing leases the regulations will apply, for example, where a tenant benefits from a right to underlet. The burden will then fall on the tenant to ensure the property complies with MEES which could in turn have serious financial implications on the value of the underletting.
For further information please contact: Jason Sidney Trainee Solicitor on 01842 754151 email: jason.sidney@rudlings-wakelam.co.uk or Steven McGrath - Partner email: steven.mcgrath@rudlings-wakelam.co.uk
In negotiating new leases, MEES has the potential to be contentious, as the terms sought by the landlord in a new lease may attempt to shift the burden of compliance onto the tenant. Explicitly, this could be in the shape of passing the burden of work required to bring the property up to the minimum standard, or passing the financial penalties onto the tenant. However, tenants should be wary of more subtle restrictions on their rights, such as onerous clauses requiring access to

“Year of Youth” – Developing opportunities for young people.
This is why I was pleased to be at Terry Jermy’s Mayor Making ceremony this month where he became Thetford’s youngest Mayor in its history. I plan on helping support his “Year of Youth” as one of the town’s ambassadors for young people alongside my role as Norfolk and Suffolk’s Enterprise Advisor. I envisage a lot more support for our town’s young people, which I am sure will be welcomed by all in Thetford. I intend to do what I can to help inspire young people locally. Remember Fail is not the end it’s just the ‘First. Attempt. In. Learning’.
by Ryan Windsor “Help Young People. Help small guys. Because small guys will be big. Young people will have the seeds you bury in their minds, and when they grow up, they will change the world.” – Jack Ma.
Would you like to ask Ryan a question? Email: ryanwindsor89@gmail.com
The above quote really struck a chord with me this month, especially the line about young people. To me this rang true, we as adults are shaping the way young people think, act and behave and I for one want to make sure that I am a positive influence on the next generation. We have a duty to develop, coach, mentor and inspire these young people to fulfil their potential. This is not just the job of a school but a duty of everyone who comes into contact with that young person and I believe this is even more pertinent today than ever. It’s true young people are influenced by their surroundings and often are sold short by those who are closest to them. This is not because people want to see them fail or not reach their full potential but the actual opposite. It’s called subconscious sabotage where that adult figure the young person is looking up to for inspiration, guidance and validation is fearful of the young person failing and tries to protect them. This sees them try and limit the young person’s aspirations in an attempt bring them “back to reality”. This is short term thinking “go to school, finish, and get a job” Do we just want our children to survive or thrive? We need dreamers; for those who dream change the world and those who change the world lead the way for others to believe. We all have a duty to foster a growth mind-set in the young people of our town and help them thrive.

‘My Meet Up’ “My daughter frequently attends Meet Up, along with her friends. It’s a safe haven for her in the middle of a busy estate. Young people can take part in activities like cooking, art and sports. My daughter finds life hard, school difficult and was recently diagnosed with depression. It’s not been easy for her to accept, but Meet Up has been a beacon of light where no-one judges or pressures her to open up. Staff are fully supportive of her, warm and reassuring. Meet Up is playing an important part in helping her to build confidence.”
Mike Towndrow, manager of Meet Up in Thetford, with young people who enjoy visiting the community centre.
“Meet Up has brought big changes in my life too. Three years ago I started volunteering here. This has dramatically helped with my confidence and work skills. It’s really helping me to turn my life around, after nearly a decade of being a stay at home Mum”
The Benjamin Foundation launched Meet Up in Redcastle Furze, Thetford in 2009, taking over the lease of a disused community centre building. Services at Meet Up are funded by the Big Lottery but this generous funding does not cover renovation costs at the building.
“When the opportunity of a paid position at Meet Up came up I went for it and was proud to get the job. I get to work with the most amazing young people, some of whom have very hard home lives. They all come bounding through the doors eager to share their day with us.”
The Benjamin Foundation’s aims are to provide four main areas of help: Hope, Opportunity, Stability and Independence. Meet Up supplies these in abundance. To find out about Meet Up’s current fundraising campaign contact; 01842 820871 or email: mike.towndrow@benjaminfoundation.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Thetford, Brandon, Mundford,
Croxton, Barnham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
