Enhancing St Cuthbert’s Place At The Heart Of Thetford The congregation of a Grade 2* Listed, 13th Century church in the heart of Thetford has raised over £200,000 to adapt their church building, to create a flexible interior which will be suitable for worship and community use. Speaking about the project, the Revd Dr Peter Herbert, Rector of St Cuthbert’s said “Changes in society mean that our buildings need to adapt to better serve their community’s needs. Our challenge at St Cuthbert’s is to redevelop the building to keep it a hub of Christian and community life in Thetford.” The plan involves installing a fully equipped catering kitchen, redesigning the toilets and improving access for people with disabilities. With the new flexible interior and fully equipped kitchen the church will also set up a new social enterprise café. The café will provide jobs, training and work experience placements for people in the Thetford area. The café also aims to work with disadvantaged groups, such as people in recovery from substance misuse and those experiencing difficulty in getting back into employment, as an opportunity to experience work in the growing food sector business. Peter Thomson, Church Council Secretary of St Cuthbert’s said: “Within our Church family we have people with extensive experience in finance, catering management and of working with disadvantaged groups. Our staff will be able to provide specialist training in food preparation, food hygiene and health and safety, covering all aspects of how to operate in a fast-moving catering environment. The hope is that this new café will generate a minimum of 2.5 full time equivalent jobs and we consider that the potential scale of the project over five years could generate up to 4.5 full time equivalent jobs.” The café will be open to the public most of the week but will also be available to be booked by individuals and organisations. The menu will be designed to include local food and drink to make use of products from local producers wherever possible, supporting local suppliers and growers. The congregation of St Cuthbert’s hope that this phase of the development will enable them to reorder the main body of the church in the future. This includes replacing the pews with flexible seating which would enable the building to be hired out to individuals, organisations and community groups.

Some of the team at St Cuthbert’s Church getting the redevelopment work underway

The Revd Dr Peter Herbert said: “The Church has a long history of social action. In the 18th Century Christians taught children to read in the first Sunday schools. In the same century, the advocacy efforts of William Wilberforce and other Christians helped abolish the slave trade throughout the British Empire. Today social action inspired by the love of Christ happens through many churches.

This month’s Thetford Face is June Lewis. Since retiring June has been supporting a number of organisations around the town, helping older residents live life to the full. She is also responsible for the fabulous costumes that appear in Thetford Players productions each year. How long have you lived in Thetford? I moved here in 1975 with my family from Essex. You’ve lived here for over 40 years, what do you like about the town? I really like the friendliness of people here and I think it’s a pretty town with so much history. I don’t think we promote our history enough. Why did you get involved in volunteering? When I was at school I had wanted to be a nurse. I’ve always wanted to help people. It pleases me to think that I’m helping the community through volunteering. When did you first start volunteering? In the mid 70s I helped at Abbey Farm Nursery, then I helped with cooking at Queensway school. I also helped at 4th Thetford Cubs when my sons were young. I was also a member of Thetford Trefoil Guild. In the 1990s I did the accounts for Age Concern at Riversdale, I’ve been a member of the town’s Twinning Association and the Lionesses, helped at the Concert and Festival Society and have taken part in Thetford Open Gardens over the years. I’m just an ordinary person.

June (far right back row) with the Life Is For Living group and trainer Emma O’Dohery (centre front)

June Lewis believes that volunteering can deliver rewards for those involved

How did Life Is For Living start? Many years ago, Michelle Jermy ran a class called Pacers, I used it when I needed some rehab. Unfortunately, the funding ran out in 2003. For years we said the town still needed a group and eventually with the help of Michelle I got some funding together and we were able to start a pilot for Life Is For Living. We made ourselves sustainable and Michelle trained Emma who now leads our class. The weekly class we run is not hi-energy but it’s quite active, we have 60s music playing and you don’t have to wear any special kit. We finish the class with tea and biscuits and once a month we meet for lunch, along with two social outings each year so we’re a social group as well as an exercise class. You’re now part of The Thetford Local People’s Project, what made you become involved? Three years ago, Sheena Tate from RVS came to the Life Is For Living group to see what was going on as she was looking for recruits for her new project in the town.

Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 8

She signed me up as a volunteer and I joined the Thetford Local People’s Project steering group. I help decide the projects for the over 50s that we deliver and look out for areas where things can be improved on the estates where the project is based. I love seeing the projects come to life and how they’ve grown. We’ve created an arts and wellbeing group, supported TADDS Befriendingproject and started a spin off chair-based exercise group attended by 15 – 20 people each week. I’m glad I’m involved because we are trying to meet the needs of older people in Thetford. It’s important to give people the opportunity to get out and see others. Do you have any ambitions for The Thetford Local People’s Project? I’ve been working on a drop in service, Canine Café. We want to encourage people to bring in their dogs for people to enjoy, perhaps giving the dogs a pat and giving the opportunity to have a cup of tea and see a friendly face. How did you become involved with the Thetford Players? I just happened to be walking to the Healthy Living Centre when I bumped into Keith Eldred. Keith said Thetford Players needed help with their costumes for their first panto. A few more pantos later I became the Wardrobe Mistress and I’ve been in charge of the costumes ever since!

What does it mean to you to be Thetford Player’s Wardrobe Mistress? I really like to make sure that when the cast go on to the stage they feel confident to play their part. Sometimes once a costume is put on the part becomes alive. I enjoy being creative and sewing. The Players are like a family. It’s been good to see the younger members grow in confidence and ability. It makes me feel really proud when I watch them on stage. For further information about any of the activities that June is involved with, see below: The Thetford Local People’s Project is funded by People’s Health Trust and overseen by the Royal Voluntary Service. For more info about the project email; sheena.tate@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk Life Is For Living meets on Fridays at the Terrapin behind Fulmerston Church at 10:30am. Comfortable clothing is advised and a small fee of £3 per session is charged to cover costs. for more information on the group please contact June on 07771637821. For information about Thetford Players please visit www.thetfordplayers.co.uk June is always keen to hear from those interested in helping with costumes.

Out and About Thetford

TADDS Enjoy A Doggy Delight Karen was delighted to be invited to one of TADDS regular Friday morning

sessions to meet Spencer from Therapy Dogs Nationwide. The group meetings normally start with a warm drink and the chance to play some games, enjoy a puzzle or have a light snack. Marion who cares for her husband said, “I get to chat with other carers, you hear what they have to deal with and how they cope, and it reminds you that you’re not the only one. Plus, it’s a break for me.” One of the key benefits for those attending the Friday group is the sense of friendship and the relaxed atmosphere. The group is run by volunteers and provide an important service for the community. “I moved to Thetford a couple of years ago and wanted to find something to help at. I really enjoy helping here” said volunteer Beverly. Therapy Dog Spencer is a regular visitor to the group and has a really interesting story. After being rescued in Cyprus he now devotes his time to helping others. His owner Neil explained that although Spencer is a Cypriot Hunting Dog, he was always the well behaved one during Neil’s visits to his rescue centre. Neil decided to adopt Spencer along with Ziggy and brought the dogs back to the UK. Spencer and Neil have since been through the Therapy Dogs Nationwide assessment programme and Spencer has now been a Therapy Dog for the past 16 months, even winning awards for his training. Spencer visits a number of care homes locally and has taken part in Thetford Library Paws and reads as part of his work with children. He loves his visits to TADDS and is always keen to greet everyone wagging his tail with excitement on arrival. Spencer’s morning at TADDS usually involves a wander around each table with Neil and plenty of pats, cuddles and tummy rubs. Spencer brings a lot of happiness and has made plenty of friends at TADDS. TADDS Trustee Billie Lawler explained, “We had to apply to Therapy Dogs Nationwide and get checked out ourselves, Neil went through a similar process and then once we were accepted it becomes more of an informal agreement and we love having Neil and Spencer visit.” Helen Morse, a Joint Dementia Research Co-Ordinator for the NHS was also visiting the group to talk to members about the latest dementia research going on and what members can sign up for. Research projects often offer consistent support during the study project, after diagnosis some families can feel that they are then left to cope on their own. By taking part in a study, an opportunity to see the same clinicians regularly is provided. To find out more about current studies taking place visit www.jointdemetiaresearch.nihr.ac.uk Therapy Dogs Nationwide are looking for more volunteers in the area for more information please visit the website: www.therapydogsnationwide.org You can follow Spencer’s story on Facebook: Ziggy Spencer

Open Gardens 2019 Season Kicks Off Thetford Open Gardens kicked off their 2019 season with

their first ‘pop-up’ garden of the year. The Paddocks was bathed in winter sunshine as visitors enjoyed the crocus, snowdrops, hellebores and river view. Sue Norman was on hand to tempt the steady stream of visitors with one of her famous cakes whilst other enjoyed homemade soup and bread, “Business during pleasure!” chuckled Sue as she brought out another piece of cake. “It was lovely to come out this morning and find my first Iris out. I love spring and coming out in the gardens this time of year,” explained TOG organiser Rachel Woods “People think there’s nothing going on but there’s lots happening. It’s a great start to Thetford Open Gardens, and we have lots of surprises this year!” The Paddocks is normally open during summer, so the early opening gave visitors a different view, many regular Open Garden fans popped in to see the architectural elements, plant structures and of course the glorious carpet of snow drops. Last year Sue baked over 50 cakes, she is planning to bake more this year and following an appeal, donations towards the cost of ingredients have been raised. “Miranda from St Nicholas Hospice suggested we looked for donations as we were covering the cost ourselves’” explained Sue “we’re overwhelmed by the offers of support, it surprised us at how many people came forward and said they would help.” Alongside Sue’s glorious cakes this year visitors at the various garden will be able to sample bacon rolls, homemade sausage rolls, takeaway lunches and new for this year pre-ordered picnic baskets. Over £100 was raised from the ‘pop-up’ garden kick starting a great season of fundraising. For more information about Thetford Open Gardens can be found on Twitter @ThetOpenGardens, on Facebook or by email thetfordopengardens@gmail.com

News From Thetford Society On a cold February evening the members of the Society were treated to the dulcet tones of an accent that was far from local. The owner of the voice was Sarah Brady an American currently living in a Cambridgeshire village with her children and her husband who is serving with the USAF. For Sarah having a chance to live in England is a dream she has harboured since childhood. Born into a military family, she spent most of formative years in South Carolina. Much of her free time was spent reading. She had a particular interest in English authors and great fascination in modern military history. Sarah studied Performance and Interpretative Speech, at College which enabled her to expand her knowledge of English literature. Her first overseas adventure was to England where she spent a very short week in London with an even shorter day trip to Oxford. After that holiday her desire to return to Blighty was even stronger and in 2017 when her husband received his orders to serve in Suffolk England, Sarah was obviously delighted and just a few months later she arrived at Heathrow with her daughters. Sarah’s talk went on to charm us with her humorous accounts of moving to a new country, how she and her family coped with the local accents, how they had learnt to live with military issue furniture until their own possessions arrived and the easier job of making new friends within the local community. Since their arrival, they have taken full advantage of the local area, making wonderful memories by visiting attractions all across East Anglia. There are plans to expand their travel around the rest of the country before they sadly have to return home. The March guest speaker will be Frances Hart who will talk about Celia Fiennes the 18th century explorer. This will be on Tuesday 5th March from 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church on Earl Street.

Have A Baa-mazing Time At The Museum This Month On the last Thursday of every month we run a Mini Museum Club with activities specifically designed to appeal to the very youngest museum visitors, children aged under five. Pre-schoolers are encouraged to explore the museum through songs, stories and crafts. Each month we explore a different theme. Plus, older siblings and friends are welcome too. Last month we were thrilled to welcome members of Breastfeeding Mum Meets and we’d like to remind readers we are breast feeding friendly.

Innovation At The Heart Of Keystone We are often familiar with names of organisations, but at the same time know little or nothing about what they actually do. Keystone Development Trust is perhaps a classic example and at Thetford Probus Club’s February meeting, guest speaker Louise Humphries set out to remedy this. As Chief Executive of Keystone she heads one of the largest development trusts in England, and although not widely known, the trust’s work in Thetford, Brandon and Mildenhall is extensive and touches many lives. Keystone was formed in 2003 after receiving EU support and other grants. Its purpose is to invest in projects and enterprise infrastructure that create jobs and bring other benefits to the whole community. To underpin this, are its investments in commercial property, with the Innovation Centre In Thetford being the most well-known. Not only is this Keystone’s base, it also offers multi-levels of office and conference space along with the popular Café One on the ground floor. Sketching in her own background, which involved working on development projects in Africa, she has drawn on this experience in helping to shape Keystone since joining the organisation three years ago. Louise leads a team of Trustees and 40 mostly part time employees and volunteers, together they are responsible for the Trust’s ambitious projects and investments. These range from attracting tenants for the office and factory buildings it owns, to initiating and supporting community projects such as the Men’s Bike Shed and the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre. It especially aims to help young people. Dr Humphries said that the challenges of building up financial reserves by generating rental income and attracting grants is crucial

Louise Humphries outside the Keystone Innovation Centre on Mundford Road

to the Trust’s success, and so, too, is the need to get local people involved with its community projects. There was an animated questions and answers session and thanks to the speaker were expressed in the usual way. In other matters at the meeting, Chairman Nigel King led congratulations to member Gerald Bass who celebrated his 90th birthday on the day of the meeting. Community Heroes Celebrated Thetford community heroes were celebrated at the 4th TARAs (Thetford Awards Recognising Achievement). Organiser Mark Robinson said he was nervous but excited at the beginning of the evening. The awards have grown in popularity year on year with over 200 nominations this time. The judging panel was made up of John Evans from Tuddenham Hall, Town Clerk Tina Cunnell, David Brooks, Tesco Manger Andrew Doherty, Mark Robinson and Archant journalist Conor Matchett. “The judging process is always very difficult each year,” Mark continued, “When I think about Terry Clucas, it is the very essence of why we do the awards, this is someone who has given decades of service to the community in both public and private. He was a foster carer, so he was helping less fortunate children, as head swimming teacher at Charles Burrell School and heavily involved in Thetford Dolphins and continued fundraising even though he was suffering a second bout of cancer. He encapsulates everything the awards are about those unsung heroes.” The evening was hosted by Mark Jefferies and Jennifer Davies. Guests enjoyed a delicious meal by Shefs and entertainment by Alton Wahlberg. Kicking off the evening was the Young Person Award. The winner was 12 year old Harry Turberville who said he felt really appreciated, “I love my job as Thetford Town Crier”. Winner of the Good Neighbour award, Alan Horler has dedicated many years to helping residents of Lord Walsingham Court. “This is incredible, I’ve been helping people in Lord Walsingham Court for over 28 years and my family has extended to 100s. It’s the best job in the world!” Former Mayor, Terry Lamb was awarded the Service to Community award and received a standing ovation – the first of many during the evening. The Sporting award was presented by Mel Sturman, a previous winner “I sponsored an award because I wanted to give something back to the community, there are so many deserving people, so I thought let’s help reward those people.” Winners, Thetford Bulldogs were delighted to receive the award and said it was third time lucky and all involved were very pleased. It was 4th time lucky for Fuzion who won the Community Event after raising £46,644.32 over the past 6 years. “We’ve been here every year, and now we’ve won!” One of the organisers, Louise Dixon aka Zumba Lou Lou continued, “We couldn’t do it without the support

of our sponsors, thank you everyone.” The Outstanding Contribution Award saw the second standing ovation of the evening. The award was presented posthumously to Terry Clucas and collected by Terry’s son Dan and President of Thetford Dolphins John Gooch who said, “Terry was such a great man, loved by everyone.” Dave Ward presented the Volunteer Award on behalf of the Thomas Paine Society, “I think it’s a very good way of keeping the name of Thomas Paine in the public eye in Thetford so that’s why I do it.” Winners Sex, Rock ‘n’ Roll ‘n’ Weeding help keep Thetford town centre weed free and tidy for all to enjoy. The award was collected by members Glynis Irish, David Osborne and Caroline Jacobs. Perry’s Taxis won the Business Award “We are totally shocked as we were up against some really strong competition” said Donna Perry. The next standing ovation came when local Historian David Osborne was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by the High Sheriff of Norfolk, Charles Watt. During his acceptance speech David talked about over 40 years of research and studying local history, “I’ve done lots of talks and town walks and published books, I’m so grateful that so many people have benefited from this, I’m just about ready to retire from local history and I hope there’s some young people in the town who will carry on and look in the record office, library and so on and carry on with what I’ve been doing.” Summing up the evening Mark Robinson said, “Most of all I love the community, the vibrancy of our community so it is my privilege with the help of many, many people to host an event like this and I thank you all for being part of it.” The 2018 finalists have collectively given over 9,228 hours to our community, raised over £27,885 for charities and donated 17 ½ tonnes of food to Thetford Foodbank.

Cats Protection Does It For £5! £5 neutering and microchipping for cats available in the Thetford area until the 26th March. As part of World Spay Day, the charity Cats Protection is offering a special deal on both cat neutering and microchipping in Thetford, for just £5 your cat can be both snipped & chipped! Neutering offers solid benefits to both male and female cats including: • Neutered females cannot become pregnant, adding to the number of unwanted kittens. Left un-neutered, a female cat can have up to 18 kittens a year. • Neutered males are less likely to roam, reducing the risk of them being involved in car accidents • Neutering means males are less likely to display territorial behaviour such as spraying, while females will not call or wail. • Neutered males are less likely to fight, reducing the risk of them getting injured or contracting serious diseases such as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or Feline Leukaemia Virus (FeLV) Cats Protection believes neutering is an essential part of responsible cat ownership and helps neuter around

Zentangle At Thetford Library What is a Zentangle, you ask? In short, it is an artform that is created by combining different patterns and designs to create unique images. No two Zentangles are the same, but each is beautiful in its own way. It is not only fun, but it also develops mindfulness which is a practical life skill. Practicing mindfulness increases focus and reduces stress. It allows us to be aware of our surroundings; it allows us to enjoy the present moment; it allows us to acknowledge our feelings and emotions. As Zentangles are drawn in pen, there is no erasing.

Pick up a pen and enjoy discovering Zentangles

This should be a quiet and meditative work, because concentration and focus are encouraged when drawing the intricate and detailed designs. Something beautiful can always come from mistakes made along the way! It’s on every Tuesday afternoon at the Library, 2 - 4pm.

Teenage Skin Our clients will often ask our therapists for advice regarding their children’s skincare. We have two ranges of skincare products that are specifically designed purely to target younger skins. It is not necessarily problem skin, but it can just be that they need advice on a daily regime that teaches their children the optimum way to care for their skin. There are many products on the market, but it is important to do your homework. Make sure they contain ingredients that will not strip off the acid mantle - a protective film that protects the skin from bacterial infection. Alkaline products, such as traditional soap, will remove this invisible barrier and it can take 6-8 hours for the acid mantle to be replaced, leaving the skin susceptible to bacteria. We recommend a ‘teens facial’, this is where we gently steam-clean the face, carry out a light exfoliation, and remove comedones, (blocked pores) by gentle extraction. This is followed by an appropriate masque and afterwards a light moisturiser. We follow this up with a written prescription sheet with a recommended homecare routine customised to their needs. It’s good to teach children the correct, healthy way to care for their skin, just as we would in caring for our teeth. We offer facials to our client’s children from the age of 12 or 13. Advice is available to all, there is always a professional available at reception to discuss treatments or a variety of product recommendations. Thetford Inner Wheel

Thetford Lionesses

At our February meeting we welcomed three members of the Full Steam Ahead service which is based at, and run by, the Charles Burrell Centre.

Lioness President Dorothy recently handed over a cheque for £4,000 to Norma Howell, from the Charity Medical Detection Dogs. This was for sponsorship of a medical assistance alert dog or a bio detection dog.

Project Leader Lyn Keane told us about the excellent work that they are doing providing skills development opportunities to get people back to or into work. This may involve improving CVs, updating IT skills and helping with interview techniques. Since the project started last year 18 people have found employment. As this is only funded for two years, they are actively looking into ways to gain further funds to continue their work beyond this period.

Norma gave an interesting and informative talk about the role of the dog in assisting people with conditions and the detection of diseases. Alert assistance dogs support people with complex health conditions or those who often have no awareness of an impending life threatening medical event. By assisting these people the dogs help reduce the paramedic call outs and reduce hospital admissions, thus giving people and families greater confidence, freedom and of course independence. Bio detection and research dogs are trained to detect minute odours associated with many cancers and other diseases. This research could help develop faster, cheaper and less invasive methods of diagnosis. Norma answered questions relating to the detection dogs and the Lionesses were able to give suggestions for a name of the sponsored dog. Thetford Lionesses meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at King’s Court, Earls Street, for further information, and to book for the quiz please contact Dorothy on 0845 833764.

From L to R; Julie Smith and Lyn Keane from Full Steam Ahead with Inner Wheel President Jenny Childerhouse. Kyle Swinger - FSA participant

At this meeting we decided to donate £100 to ‘Mary’s Meals’. This is a charity which makes sure children get a meal at school every day. It was started initially as a one off donation of aid to Bosnia by a Scottish family. It has grown to a worldwide organisation giving over 1,100,000 children, a meal each day at school. Our donation will be doubled by the Government on a matching scheme for charities. We also gave £100 to the Linus Project who we heard about last month to buy materials for their quilts. These beautiful and colourful quilts are given to children in need as a comfort blanket often whilst in hospital. President Jenny Childerhouse told us plans are now well in hand for our 60th Charter Dinner in April. Our national Association is over 90 years old so we are mere youngsters! Our Association President Ann Acaster will be present with our District Chairman Linda Fellas. Our Speaker will be Ms Michelle Jarrold of the Norwich Department Store. What Is #SeeMe? A National non-profit campaign supporting women living actively with disabilities be it physical, mental or quiet. We are aware that society likes to give us a neat label if we live with a physical and/or mental impairment that has a long term negative effect on your ability to do normal activities. We are also aware there are a number of women living positively despite their physical and/or mental impairment & face discrimination as a result. We welcome ALL women including ‘quiet disabilities’, conditions that have a significant effect on life affecting self-worth and wellbeing that may or may not fit into the ‘box’.

Private landowners are responsible for removing rubbish dumped on their land and picking up the bill for doing so, which can often run into hundreds of pounds each time. With nearly 1-million incidents of fly-tipping nationally last year action is clearly needed to combat this issue.” For more information about the campaign, fly-tipping and legal ways to get rid of unwanted items, visit: www.norfolkrecycles.com/scrapflytipping Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 31

Thetford Garden And Allotment Club - Notes For March The 1st of March is St David’s Day so the daffodils in your garden should be putting on a good show. They are such a welcome sight in Spring and the shorter, single forms cope with wind and even snow quite cheerfully, springing back after a buffeting. If there is an empty corner where they would catch the eye you could resolve to plant more bulbs in the Autumn – or even buy a pot in bud now for immediate pleasure. Lots of things will be bursting into life in March – and unfortunately this includes SLUGS. They always like the young and tender shoots so you need to be on the attack in the vegetable garden from the beginning. There aren’t many creatures that like eating slugs but if you have a hedgehog visiting, or even a slowworm, give them every encouragement as they will be out at night fighting your battle. Slugs don’t like grit and if you are a keen coffee drinker, you could try putting the grounds round the new brassicas or other young plants. As well as the texture, I wonder if the smell masks the vegetable aroma – the way that slugs head towards cabbages suggests they are sniffing them out even if it is hard to visualize a slug with a nose! In the end most of us will put down slug pellets but try to put the pellets under an old saucer or similar so that hungry birds do not take the poison. The lawn should be growing now so a light trim on a high setting will help even out its appearance and stimulate growth. Towards the end of the month a top dressing designed for Spring/Summer will provide a boost of nitrogen to encourage growth. If you have time to go round the edge with a half-moon blade the general appearance of the garden will be much improved; put the trimmings on your compost heap and the bacteria in the soil will help the decomposition of kitchen waste. A win-win situation! The ground needs to have lost its winter chill for seeds to germinate so cloches or plastic sheeting can be used to encourage the warming up process. Once the soil is ready, a variety of veg can be sown – peas, spinach, chard, radish, leeks, broad beans – a mouth-watering list. Early potatoes can be planted; these have a shorter growing time than maincrop so there are fewer tubers – but the first few meals of earlies must be among the best flavours of the year. The material from your compost heap can be scattered across the cleared area in your veg plot with the rougher stuff going into a bean trench to continue rotting down.

Each month seems to bring a different pruning job and this time it is the turn of bush and climbing roses. Although the recommended cut looks savage, pruning acts as a stimulus to growth and gives you a chance to shape a plant to its location. With its energy focused the plant also produces denser and richer flowers – so harden your heart and prune ruthlessly. The club meeting this month is on 28th March (at 7.30pm in the United Reformed Church Hall as usual). Members and non-members alike are welcome to come and listen to Stephen Poulter give a talk entitled To the hammer born – tales from an auctioneer. The Spring show is on the first Saturday in April so this month is the time to check pots of bulbs and start making your Easter bonnet! The member’s diary also contains a lot of information about showing flowers and vegetables and includes the schedule and entry form for each show on separate sheets. Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

Waders Winging It Back To The Brecks Waders, or shorebirds as they are termed in the States, are often characterised by having long thin legs and beaks, allowing them to wade in shallow water and probe into the substrate for their invertebrate prey. Although such adaptations might seem better suited to coastal rather than Breckland habitats, there are several wading birds that make our area their home for the breeding season. Perhaps the most conspicuous of the long-billed waders around Thetford is the Oystercatcher – these distinctive black and white birds with straight orange beaks have a tendency to ‘cleep’ loudly, particularly when they are on the wing. They can often be found relatively close to our towns and villages, and are happy nesting in such diverse spots as roofs of small buildings and busy roundabouts! Like most of the locally breeding waders, Oystercatchers vacate our area during winter, many relocating to the food-rich wader wonderland of the Wash. However, they don’t waste any time and return to inland haunts from mid February onwards.

beak that perfectly equips it to pick beetles and other invertebrates from on or near the surface of dry ground. Most Stone-curlews leave the UK altogether in winter, with some going as far as sub-Saharan Africa. Given that they have further to come, it’s no surprise that they take longer to arrive, though they are still one of our earliest-returning migratory birds and will be back by mid to late March. Last but not least among Thetford’s regular breeding waders is the Lapwing. Like Stone-curlews, these comically-quiffed birds have short beaks and feed on morsels on the surface. Although they appear black and white when seen in their staccato-flapping flight, their upperparts are actually a rich bottle green.

Look out for them in open grassy habitats, like the paddocks along the north side of the River Thet between Melford Bridge and the Nuns’ Bridges. In most years, one or two pairs breed at the BTO Nunnery Lakes. Curlew, named for its far-carrying, evocative call rather than its decurved beak, is the other regularly seen longbilled wader around Thetford. These stately waders are typically found in wilder places; locally they are most often seen on open, short-cropped grassland such as Thetford Heath. They too are quick to return to their breeding grounds and the first few will already be back on territory in the Brecks.

Scanning the Nunnery Lakes from the viewpoints on Barnham Cross Common or the new viewing platform on the BTO reserve itself are good places from which to see these spectacular birds. Sadly several wader species are in decline across the UK, so if you do see any of those mentioned, please log your sightings in BirdTrack www.birdtrack.net to help conservationists plot the fortunes of these fascinating but vulnerable Sullivan 1-8th Advert_Layout 1 14/12/2016 08:28 Page birds.

Not all waders have long beaks, though. Thetford’s superstar of the wader world, the iconic Stone-curlew – with its Gruffalo eyes and wailing cries, sports a short

Will anyone ever forget the Easter Chicks knitted by Wendy Greenwood and friends and stuffed with cream Easter eggs last year! At £1 each, they proved to be such super money raisers for Cancer Research UK that the girls are repeating the project again in 2019 and hope to beat the 2018 target of £300. Again, they have been overwhelmed by the generous donation of eggs by Thetford shops, including Aldi, Sainsbury, Tesco, Roy’s, Wilko, Iceland plus staff at The Range in Bury and so far the girls have been given nearly 300 eggs..and it’s still only March! Terry and Sally, friends of the knitters, have also donated eggs. Louise at Style Lounge is selling the chicks to clients and they will also be on sale at the Big Bargains Bonanza to be held outside Thetford Methodist Church on Saturday 13th April, from 9.45am - 11.45am in aid of CRUK. So well done to Wendy Greenwood, Sylvia Saunders, Janine Moore, Geraldine Cook and Laurel Fadden. Keep the needles clicking, girls.

Rudlings Wakelam Charity Drive One Hope Foundation is a UK registered charity and international NGO established in 2016 by a group of young people determined to make a difference to the lives of those afflicted by poverty and distress. Shaz Butt from the Brandon Office of Rudlings Wakelam is one of the founding members and uses his annual leave each year to work for One Hope Foundation. The group took their ideas to the wider community and were pleased to get the support of many to put their ideas into practice. Just a few years on the charity has become a globally recognised charity.

What does the ‘One Hope Foundation’ aim to do? Feed and clothe the homeless and less fortunate individuals in our society Sponsor Orphans to provide education, food, shelter and clothing Provide water facilities to communities with no clean drinking water Provide food, water and clothing to refugees worldwideFund operations for cataract and cleft lips for disadvantaged individuals They carry out all of their projects with great care and diligence. They only take on projects that they can fully guarantee 100% of the funds will be used for the cause in question. Every project is monitored from start to finish by one of the trustees of the charities. Every single penny is accounted for to ensure money is spent wisely.

Shaz (L) and Nicola have also held a cake sale to raise money for One Hope Foundation

Recently they visited Pakistan, Bangladesh, Greece, Germany and France to provide Humanitarian aid. Nicola Greenough from the Thetford Office is currently fundraising for One Hope Foundation.“I started running 2 years ago with the help of the couch to 5k app and on the 24th March I will be running first half marathon.” Nicola secured her place in the London Landmarks Half Marathon though a ballot entry, and decided that she would still raise money for charity. “I chose the One Hope Foundation as they are a smaller charity with a 100% donation policy. The charity is aimed at helping the less fortunate in society in the UK and abroad.” So far Nicola has raised just over £500. RudlingsWakelam Solicitors What is a Leasehold Property? Leasehold properties hit the headlines when it became evident that developers were selling properties as leasehold and retaining the freehold title. Issues arose as clauses in the leases could see Ground Rent double over short periods and Service Charges increase at substantial levels. This created a negative perception of leasehold properties. However the creation of a lease can be an extremely useful and practical method for dealing with certain properties such as flats and apartments. Provided that the terms of the lease are fair and that the purchaser understands their responsibilities under the Lease, there is no reason to not consider buying a leasehold property. Below are just a few terms you will want to be familiar with when considering purchasing a leasehold. What is the difference between a Leasehold and Freehold Property? A person who owns the freehold owns the property and the land which it stands on outright. Whereas, a person who owns a leasehold title will own the property for a set period of time (“the Term). At the end of the Term, the land and property will revert to the owner of the freehold title.

How long should my Term last for? There is no prescribed time limit for how long a leasehold Term can last. Most lenders require a minimum amount of time to be remaining on the Lease. This varies between lenders and you should ensure your Solicitor has checked your mortgage offer and the Lender’s requirements. What is Ground Rent? Ground Rent is the sum payable for your use of the property. It is important that you are aware much is payable, how often, when it is due and whether it will increase during the Term of the Lease What are Service Charges? A service charge is payable payment made to the Landlord or Managing Agent in relation any costs they have incurred for the management and maintenance of the building, for example painting the communal areas of a block of flats. The cost will be divided between the properties contained within the building or estate. Again, you should ensure you understand how much is payable and when, so you can budget accordingly. These are only a few of the points to consider when purchasing a leasehold property. You should ensure that you raise any concerns you may have with your Solicitor.

Students Jump To It With Olympic Hopeful Zeeks Young athletes from a Thetford school have raised hundreds of pounds for school sports equipment in a sponsored circuit training session with an international long jumper.

Dolphins Enjoy County Championships Thetford Dolphins swimmers had another eventful time at the Norfolk County Championships at Norwich UEA producing 3 Golds, 5 Silvers, 1 Bronze, 10 club records, 18 finalists, 8 1st places and 30 personal bests.

Ezekiel ‘Zeeks’ Ewulo put four classes of Thetford Academy students through their paces when he visited the school recently. After the sessions Zeeks, who has competed for Nigeria and Great Britain and is hoping to be picked for the next Olympic Games, gave an assembly talking about his career and the challenges of becoming a professional athlete.

He also demonstrated his long jump technique, although not quite matching his career personal best of 7.9m – more than half the width of the school auditorium. PE teacher Katie Allcock, who organised the visit, said: “The students were highly engaged and asked interesting questions.” The visit raised £700 in sponsor money which will go towards sports resources at Thetford Academy, including a PE celebration event, and the Sports For Schools project which aims to inspire young people to keep fit and gives support to promising athletes.

Ladies Scoop Golf Prize For the first time a female pairing won the Thetford Winter ProAm which took place in February. Saffron Walden professional Sarah Smith and Wendy Cook from Colne Valley – who is a Breckland member at Thetford – showed the men the way to do it with a better-ball score of 67. That was two better than Chris Soanes and James Nolloth, Paul Maddy and Christian Weisner and Miles Collins and Roger Toone. Collins had the best pro score for the second month running with 70 (four birdies and two bogeys) while Maddy returned 71, Adam Pike 72 and Andy Marshall 74. A strong, cold wind had made conditions difficult. The AmAm prize went to Tom Hatton and Dean Brace, who said afterwards: “As usual the course was fantastic.”

Trevor Cave and James Ong had a 69, Steve Harvey and David Bell 70 and Peter Robinson and Graham Horsfield took the fourth prize on countback after a 71. Are you a member of a local sports group? Jason originally weighed 82.5kgs lost 12Kgs before joining Thetford Parkrun on 23rd March 2013. During 2012 Jason had completed a couple of 10k events and joined parkrun to maintain weight loss and improve his fitness. In 2013, Jason's parkrun finish time was 24:56 and has since achieved 19:35 at King’s Lynn parkrun and 19:39 at Thetford parkrun. During the last 6 years Jason has run over fifty 10k events with a personal best time of 40 minutes and 30 seconds in a London event. Jason was first male winner at the Thetford Iceni 10k in 2018. He has completed ten half marathon events with a personal best time of 1 hour and 30 minutes on 10th February at the Olympic Park event. Double HIIT With Heidi And Stacey

Love Yourself

Double HIIT is led by local fitness instructors Heidi and Stacey. It’s a 60 minute class, which combines two workouts: half an hour of Insanity, followed by half an hour of Metafit. Both workouts are a form of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training), meaning you work as hard as you can through quick bursts of exercise followed by a short recovery and then the process is repeated. This type of interval training keeps your body working at maximum capacity throughout the entire workout, leaving your metabolic rate higher for hours after exercise, allowing your body to burn calories when your workout is over for a longer period of time. It’s a bodyweight workout, so there’s no need for equipment and it’s suitable for all abilities.

Recently I delivered a ‘Health and Nutrition’ presentation to the learners at Catch 22 College as part of their ‘Love Yourself’ themed class and it got me thinking, do we love ourselves enough? With lives as busy as they are, how often are we skipping meals and going to bed late? How often do we deprive ourself some fresh air in return for scrolling through social media? How often do we put others first before thinking of our own health and fitness? I’d take a guess at saying a lot of people fall in to the category where ‘quite often’ would be the answer. Over the last few months I’ve stepped back and taken a different look at things around me. I’ve started to ask myself ‘why?’. Why am I reaching for my phone when I have a spare minute? Why am I unjustifiably scrolling through Facebook complaining I’m bored? Why am I not putting myself first instead of comparing my life to others that I choose to follow on social media? I answered that question of ‘Why’ - it’s habit. I reach for my phone because it’s out of habit. It takes no energy and can keep me amused for a while but it’s actually not really what I want. It doesn’t make me happy. What makes me happy personally is seeing people that I genuinely like. It’s spending time doing things I’m genuinely interested in and it’s keeping my body healthy. I eat clean and well, I’ve got people around me who are good for my mental health and I do things that are of interest to me. Do something for you today, it’s not selfish, it’s a selfless act to keep your happiness where it should be. When you’re happy, you give off more positive vibes which in turn makes other people happy and when they’re happy, life is so much better.

We are a friendly class and welcome everyone, whether you are a first timer or an advanced gym goer. So why not come and see what it’s all about?
