Breaking Good: Towering Tractors To Help Tiny Wildlife The Brecks is an area of unique climate and soils. A history of grazing and cultivation created an open landscape attracting rare flora and fauna. There has, however, been a severe decline in the creation of this bare, or broken (hence the term ‘Breck’), ground which has led to a decrease in the plants and animals that depend on it. As part of the Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership Scheme, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Ground Disturbance Project explores a range of different disturbance treatments in order to increase populations of plants, invertebrates and birds through varied habitat management and mosaic creation. Traditionally the creation of bare ground was achieved through grazing and by the huge populations of rabbits the landscape once supported, but since the planting of the forests and the dawn of industrial agriculture, these natural processes in The Brecks no longer occur on the scale that they used to.
Picture: Digger clears land at Brandon Heath to support wildlife and plant growth
invertebrate population will also provide feeding and breeding habitats for birds including nightjars, stonechats and woodlarks.” In the coming months, work will also take place at Cranwich Heath; 10 larger scrapes will be created, each approximately 30 metres in diameter. These will promote the spread of rare Breckland plants, and provide niche habitats for rare moths and butterflies. Similar disturbance work has already been undertaken on Weeting Heath and on road side nature reserves in both the Norfolk and Suffolk areas of The Brecks. A lot of preparation work is required before work like this can go ahead, not least by Norfolk County Council Historic Environment Service and Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service, who have been working alongside the conservation organisations to ensure the ground disturbance works do not damage archaeological remains. Initially, existing records were studied followed by field surveys of all the sites.
To combat the loss of these natural processes, a huge transformation has taken place this week using heavy machinery at Brandon Heath in the Brecks, managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust. The machinery is being used to scrape away the surface nutrients and expose the bare mineral soil below, creating ideal habitat for rare Breckland plants, solitary bees and rare moths. The removed soil has been piled up creating south facing banks that will trap seeds and provide burrowing opportunities for various insects and also rabbits. At Brandon Heath, the heather is prevented from rejuvenating naturally because many areas are dominated by mosses and grasses which would naturally have been kept down by grazing animals. A massive two hectares of bare ground will be created, made up of 60 small scrapes of roughly 7-8 metres in diameter each. These will allow space for the heather to grow and create a site with different ages of heather. This is really important, as without this sort of intervention the heather will degenerate and ultimately be lost to grasses and scrub.
Many archaeological features were discovered during the surveys, including a possible prehistoric burial mound, an Anglo-Saxon boundary bank, medieval and post medieval warren boundaries and locations of old quarries dug for sand, gravel and chalk. The ground disturbance works are being organised around all known archaeological features and where necessary are being carried out under the supervision of archaeologists. This project is part of the Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership Scheme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and is being delivered through the partnership of Norfolk Wildlife Trust, RSPB, Forestry Commission, Suffolk County Council, Norfolk County Council and University of East Anglia, and with the support of Natural England.
Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Brecks Heathland Project Officer, Andy Palles-Clark said: “Brandon Heath is particularly important for solitary bees and wasps which utilise it both as a nectar source and also require bare ground for burrowing into for breeding. Increasing the

Community Grant Scheme Launched The Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership announces the deadline of 31st March 2016 for applications to the ‘PEOPLE’S POT’ Community Grant fund. As part of the £2.2m Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership Scheme supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, a special fund is available for making grants of up to £5,000 in support of independent landscape and heritage projects in the Scheme area. private, voluntary and community sectors across The Brecks. Whilst applications from individuals are not precluded, all projects need to demonstrate firm evidence of public benefit and it is expected that in most cases applications will be submitted on behalf of organisations or groups of people. Although applicants need not necessarily come from, or be based in, the Scheme area, all project outputs must take place in the project area or be demonstrated to further the objectives of Breaking New Ground. To discuss project ideas or for more information please contact the Breaking New Ground team on 01842 815 465 or email bng.admin@suffolk.gov.uk Successful applications for grants in 2014 and 2015 included community art, film and poetry projects, some of which have just completed a month long exhibition at the Apex in Bury St Edmunds. Also supported is a Goshawk tagging conservation project and the well-publicised rescue of the flint mural masterpieces from the old Library in Brandon. This year the Landscape Partnership are seeking applications for projects that conserve or restore natural or built heritage features in the Project area. you a handle to help with moving the container about. This is a bit tricky for the first few so I lay the bucket on its side but once you have two dozen or so they support one another standing upright. The newspaper disintegrates in the soil once the bean is planted out. Very economical!

If you are planting up big tubs of flowers for show in the summer, try using broken up lumps of polystyrene in the base to keep the drainage holes open. This light-weight material which forms the growing trays for bedding plants will add nothing to the weight of your finished tub; that means it is easier to move round than if you put the traditional broken clay flower pot sherds in the bottom.
Hurrah - it’s March! After weeks of inactivity through bad weather and limited daylight, now the days are lengthening with British Summer Time starting on the 28th. This month used to be the beginning of the year in the distant history of Rome – they named it after the god of war, Mars, as they could begin to march about and fight. Now we take on the battle with the pests and weeds which are enjoying the milder weather too!
The meeting this month is on the 31st and Hilary Thomas will be coming to talk about Bulbs for Every Month – a chance to get some new ideas. The Spring show is on April 16th so it is worth checking the schedule this month to see where you can enter. As my daffodils started flowering in January, I don’t expect to have any to show but I’m sure someone will surprise us. It’s not all flowers and you don’t have to be a member – anyone fancy making an Easter Bonnet?
Onion sets and potatoes can be put in cleared and readied ground along with some early seeds. Now is the time you get your reward for winter digging but any neglected patch should be at least forked over. Compacted ground presents real difficulties for root growth for both seeds and established plants (except weeds of course). Root crops such as carrots and parsnips especially benefit from an open soil texture. In the garden, the lawn will be happier for aerating, especially anywhere that has been trodden repeatedly in the winter (e.g. along the track of the washing line, the route to the bird feeder etc.). You may not have the energy to deal with the whole lawn but sinking a fork into these areas will help them recover. Having said that, be cautious if you have not been active during the winter – it’s all too easy to put your back out. A couple of short sessions when you start digging will strengthen your back muscles and let you know your limits.

Runner beans are among the most productive crops you can grow (as well as fixing nitrogen into the soil). The trouble is getting the plants past the initial shooting stage. The shooting tips are loved by all manner of pests – slugs, mice and the dreaded pigeons. It is heart-breaking to see a row of beans with the tops nipped out. Most people will start them under cover to avoid this and to have plants ready to go once the frosts have finished. Here is a tip for the stingier gardener; rather than buy extra-tall pots so that their roots can develop, fold a sheet of newspaper to make a tube into which you can pour compost. I find half a sheet of the free paper gives a good height with a turn-over of about 2 inches at the base. Tuck a bean seed in the top and put this in a bucket or big plant tub. The bucket gives

The ‘One Show’ Comes To Thetford On Wednesday 27th January, the BBC One Show had a one hour special promoting the new Dad's Army film. As part of the programme a film crew visited Thetford on Saturday 23rd January and spent the day filming various groups around the town singing the Dad's Army song "Who do you think you are kidding Mr Hitler", and these were edited down to be included in the show. On the day of the show the outside broadcast crew arrived at The Bell Hotel and gathered together people who had appeared as extras in the original Dad's Army television show. These included Keith Eldred and his wife Margot. Keith was responsible for arranging what extras were required for the various episodes and as a result became the most popular man in town.

Stuart Wright, the Chairman of the Dad's Army Museum, came up to Bridlington with his family to appear as extras in the new film and spoke about the Museum acquiring many props from the film, which will be displayed in the Musem which opened for it's new season on Saturday 27th February. Brandon & District Photographic Club
I'm a self-employed woman and I’m thinking about starting a family. Am I able to take paid maternity leave?
Spring is on the way (I promise!). Brandon & District Photographic Club are planning an exciting number of activities over the next few months. A competition will be taking place on Wednesday 2nd March when we will be holding our second ‘JPeg’ Competition, and then on 30th March it will be the ‘Workshop’ Competition.
Maternity entitlements are different for self-employed women but financial support is still available. Selfemployed women who have a baby may be entitled to a total of 39 weeks Maternity Allowance. The maximum weekly rate you can receive is £139.58 but it does depend what your individual circumstances are. In order to get the full amount you need to have worked (either employed or self-employed) for at least 26 out of the 66 weeks prior to your baby's arrival. You should also have paid National Insurance contributions for at least 13 of those weeks and are required to have earned an average of £30 per week over 13 of the 66 weeks. However, if you don’t meet all of these criteria it’s possible that you’ll still be able to receive some support. You can put in a claim once your pregnancy reaches 26 weeks by filling in a MA1 claim form online or popping it in the post. The earliest you can receive the first payment is 11 weeks before your baby is due, or you can elect to start it as late as the day after the birth. Employees often have ‘keeping in touch’ days and the same stands for self-employed workers. You can work for up to 10 days whilst receiving Maternity Allowance, but go over this threshold and you risk losing your allowance altogether. If your household income isn’t enough to cover your costs you might also be entitled to further financial aid such as the Sure Start Maternity Grant or income-related social security benefits.
We are also planning two talks this Spring; the first being on the 16th March - a talk by Horry Parsons. Horry came to see us last year and talked about the restoration of St Edmundsbury Cathedral, which was a fascinating evening. Secondly, Barrie and Liz Hatton (EAF) will join us on the 13th April to give a talk on their Falklands Journey, some more beautiful photographs of birds, scenery and fauna as well as an amusing and informative talk. Everyone is welcome to come along to any of these evenings, meet us all, see what get up to and join in. Don’t forget to visit our website: www.brandonphotographicclub.co.uk Denise Whiting, Club Secretary

News from Thetford Probus Driving home a road safety message for seniors The acronym KIDS deceptively suggests something to do with child’s play. But think again or, better still, ‘Think! Road Safety’. At Thetford Probus Club’s monthly meeting in February, driving and road safety expert, Terry Plummer explained that his presentation dubbed KIDS stood for Keep Independent & Driving Safely, a subject that had his audience listening intently, because being able to drive is crucially important for older people, especially so for those living in rural areas where public transport is minimal. West Thetford Community Fly-tipping Project Report
in a great deal of action with garage areas being cleared and un-used garages being boarded up. The Clean For The Queen campaign gives the opportunity for more people to also be involved. I recently took part in a well attended litter pick at the Charles Burrell Centre and l am organising the event detailed below in partnership with Barnham Cross Action Group so please come along if you can. All who attend will be invited to a Family Tea at a later date, in honour of the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Sadly, we all experience fly-tipping at some point. It has different effects on different people but predominantly we all feel sad and disappointed when we witness it. There’s often an environmental impact as well. My role, which is part of a pilot project funded by Breckland Council, covers the three estates of West Thetford and I have been working very closely behind the scenes with both Breckland Council and Flagship Housing to try to improve the situation and reduce instances of fly tipping. Your help, as residents, is also crucial and can make a big difference. For example;
Fly-tipping has an effect on all of us, but by working together we can reduce it from occuring and help keep our communities clean and tidy. Best wishes, Barbara Bysouth
• If you see someone fly-tipping would you be willing to give a written witness statement? This happened recently and the issue is currently being investigated. • If you see a fly-tip please report it. The general rule is if it is on a green area or in an alley way, it is the responsibility of Breckland Council. You can either report on 01362 656870 or via www.breckland.gov.uk where you can also upload a photograph. Garage areas are generally the responsibility of Flagship Housing and you can report fly tipping on: 0808 1684555 but please also ask the person answering your call to also inform the appropriate Community Manager and Community Ranger. Flagship are keen to combat fly-tipping and treat any information about the perpetrators confidentially. • If you could also take the time to let me know when you have reported an incident, it would help me to define ‘hot spots’ that may need more frequent inspections. I worked my way from a casual lifeguard, working around 6th Form, to a ‘Quality Manager’ of a Leisure Centre, gaining first aid, pool plant and also Lifeguard Trainer assessor qualifications along the way. I was excited but apprehensive at the challenge ahead, with moving from a leisure environment with a large volume of staff down to a team of 3 core staff members, 2 sessional caretakers and a small team of dedicated volunteers, it was going to be different to say the least.
Pictured: Joshua Grayson, Deputy Manager of Charles Burrell Centre reflecting on his first few months
and safety matters. The future, what is round the corner, no one knows, but I for one am looking forward to being part of the development and future of CBC and the prospects and opportunities it brings. Thanks to everyone that recently supported our ‘Clean for the Queen’ efforts. We were delighted that 21 bags of rubbish were collected from around the Centre and also the surrounding residential area as part of this initiaitive. We will be organising a celebratory event to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday in the near furure.
The first 4 months at CBC has had its challenges along with its rewards. A major challenge has been starting projects from scratch, which, after being in businesses where the framework is already set up certainly put me out of my comfort zone, but nothing that I have not been able to be overcome with a bit of determination and hard work. Along with the challenges it has been great to see the rewards of the hard work in seeing the centre grow to over 75% capacity, meeting potential hirers and tenants, finding out about their visions and ideas and finding an affordable room to help them develop and grow.

Wild Walk in Thetford with the RSPB Why not join us on our next monthly wildlife walk starting at the Captain Mainwaring statue on Bridge Street in Thetford on Sunday 13th March at 11 am? The walk lasts about 90 minutes. We’ll be walking along the river, looking for birds and other wildlife. Everyone is welcome, from expert to beginner and the walks are aimed at adults and families with budding young naturalists. Wear stout footwear, wrap up for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them. These wildlife walks are free but donations are welcome! There is no need to book but for more information, contact 01842 753732 or email us: thebrecks@rspb.org.uk There is always something to see and February’s highlights included three species of birds of prey, wagtails and various finches and waterfowl and also featured the goldcrest, our smallest bird (weighing the same as 12 paper clips!). Stars of the show were the kingfishers – often at the top of people’s “wish lists”! We look forward to seeing you there!

Unfortunately, this year some of our long term fosterers are having to give up fostering for a variety of reasons. Therefore we are short of people who are willing to foster cats or kittens for us indoors. You need to have a dedicated spare room or conservatory, as Cat Protection cats and kittens must be kept separate from the resident animals in your household. Ideally the floor in your ‘cat room’ should be washable and be able to be disinfected. A carpet is not ideal.Cats Protection pay for litter, food and mileage when you need to take your foster cat or kitten to the vet. All our cats and kittens are checked by a vet and will need to be vaccinated, mircrochipped and possibly neutered, if the cat is old enough. So being a driver would also be an advantage. We use Eastgate Vets in Thetford and Mildenhall, so ideally you would be able to get to either vets practice. No payment is needed, as any treatment goes on our bill, which is settled by our treasurer each month. You should not be out of pocket and the only thing you contribute is your time. You should also be willing to allow members of the public, who have been vetted by our Homing Officer, to come and view the cats or kittens.

An appointment will be made that is convenient to you. You would have the choice of whether you want to foster adult cats, or mum and kittens, or just kittens. However if you opt for kittens you would need to be at home for most of the day as they need feeding at least 4 times during the daytime. Litters are seldom mixed, so it may be one litter of kittens that are weaned, or a single adult, or two adults if they are related. We can provide cat beds, litter trays, feeding bowls, toys, a scratching post and a cat carrier. So if you think you would like to try fostering for us and if you think you can part with a cat or kitten that you may have had for some time (there are always others waiting to come into our care), then give us a ring. It is a very rewarding way to help us and the cats of course. Call Ann on 01953 681092 or Jackie on 01842 754670. Rita Thompson, Breckland Cats Protection

thing as a ‘safe’ tan, the skin goes darker in colour because it is trying to protect the body from ultraviolet light. The U.K now has the highest reported cases of skin cancer in the world! Not something for us to be proud of. It has never been more important to be sensible & prevent burning or over exposing the skin to sun damage and wearing a high factor 25/30 sunblock.
Commonly Believed Myths I thought it would be interesting to dispel some of the myths clients often ask us when having skin care and body treatments. Eating chocolate makes my skin breakout in spots! Myth. Chocolate does not cause breakouts. It does however contain high sugar and fat content, so too much would not be good as a high fat diet can make the skin oilier.
Lisa Stallings Halcyon Days Skincare
If I shave hairs to remove them, they will grow back thicker and stronger? Myth. There is no way shaving can stimulate the roots of hairs. However, the hairs may appear thicker because the fine tapered end of the hair has been removed making the hair look and feel thicker.
Halcyon Days Skin Care & Laser clinic
Are the white marks on my nails caused by Calcium deficiency? Myth. It is not a deficiency in calcium that causes white spots but there are several other reasons we may get them. It could be injury to the nail base, bad manicure procedures pushing back cuticles too harshly, an allergic reaction to things like polishes or polish remover and even some hard hardeners. Acrylic nails can also cause trauma. Zinc deficiency is also a cause of white spots or streaks and can be corrected with diet. Protein deficiency shows as horizontal bands across the nail bed, they do not grow out. Diets rich in protein, turkey, fish, tuna, salmon, tofu, nuts, seeds all help. There are some serious diseases that present symptoms like white spots on the nails. Therefore, it is extremely important to see a doctor if you notice any discolorations in your nails. The earlier you see the doctor the more likely it is to treat the condition effectively. Liver disease, like hepatitis and cirrhosis, is one of the more serious causes of white spotted fingernails. Kidney disease also has symptoms that affect the nails, such as nails that are possibly white and pink. The nails can be turned partially white due to kidney failure.

Beauty Geek Column by Caroline King Make-up expiration dates: Keep it or bin it? Can you honestly say you throw out make-up once it’s past its sell-by date? Did you even know make-up had a sell-by date? I know I personally have boxes of make-up. Some I use regularly, and others I use on special occasions. Whilst the rest… well, I really am not sure why I keep it. Is it because it has sentimental value? I don’t want to waste it? Who knows! Like skincare, and toiletries, make-up will go off. This could then contribute to skin irritations, and worse case, infections. The most important thing to remember before you even start to look at make-up is to ensure your make-up bag, box, container or wherever you store it, is clean and hygienic. Plus the tools you use to apply the make-up such as brushes are thoroughly clean. Make-up brushes should be washed and air dried to ensure they don’t cross contaminate bacteria into your make-up that will be a breeding ground for those nasty bugs to grow.

Cynthia Della Hoy’s Croxton Charity
Thetford Inner Wheel: On 4th January members were treated to a talk by local Vet, Howard Truscot, entitled 'James Herriot to Super Vet'. It was an enlightening and amusing talk telling us of how he had qualified at Edinburgh university, having his first job interview with James Herriot which was unsuccessful, and accepting a job in East Anglia where he has been ever since. He has seen many changes in the practice mainly from large animals – including llamas and ostrich – to small, this having come about because there are now many more specialist vets and referral centres. He ended by showing us some of the implements needed in large animal practice.
Registered Charity Number 118374
The above charity was formed on the death of Cynthia Della Hoy who had many connections within the area and bequeathed properties and any subsequent surplus income for charitable purposes. The Trustees are able to apply any income of the charity to both the core village of Croxton and the local neighbourhood of the village, this being interpreted as the town of Thetford, the villages of Kilverstone and East Wretham all being within the Thetford Team Ministry. To this end the Trustees would like to highlight the availability of such funds to any other existing charities, community groups and organizations that may wish to to seek assistance from this charity, either for themselves or behalf of another.

Now for the good news The key is to seek expert advice mainly from four sources and stress test your investment against two KPI’s being, Return on Investment (ROI) and Yield.
What the Autumn Budget means for Property Investors
The four experts you need to have in your power team are.
‘Business Matters’ column, by Ryan Windsor
1. Accountant – ROI, Yields and Tax: It’s the accountants job to make sure you are turning a profit and the deal is robust. Make sure to get a customized management account from them so you can see what properties are performing and which are not and cut them from your business.
Do you have an investment property or would you like to purchase one in 2016? For many it is a way to secure a well-deserved retirement and provide an income for themselves and their family.
2. Broker – Can you get a Mortgage? Your new best friend? These guys are worth every penny and it’s critical to get one that knows investments too. They will help you get the property in the first place and select the most profitable deal - look after them!
But the shock budget announcement has made many uncertain of the feasibility and viability of such an investment. Below I will give my opinion on what the budget may mean to you and how you could still prosper in 2016. First thing first the bad news.
3.Solicitor – Keeping it Legal: Purchasing and selling a property can be tricky, working close with an expert solicitor should make this a smooth and air tight transaction in regards to contracts, especially if doing a Joint Venture.
1. More Tax: The amount of relief on interest from mortgages is being reduced to 20% by 2020. This means Landlords will not be able to claim back the interest payments as a business cost like many other companies. For example: A Landlord who invested in a property worth £100,000 on an 85% Loan to Value Mortgage with an interest rate at 5% could end up losing £100 a year. If the Bank of England raises interest rates and the Mortgage rate goes to 5.5% this could jump to a loss of £440 according to PwC.
4. Property expert – Mentor/ Coach: Working with someone who has years of experience and has the team in place can speed up your success why “reinvent the wheel”. Their knowledge about the industry and how to put a deal together could be critical to your success and mean the different between profit and loss.
2. Supply and Demand: Concerns about the supply of housing. Most of the stock around 57% has been brought for the Rental Sector between 1986 – 2012. Economists fear home builders will slow construction as demand will fall (Department of Communities and Local Government). This will ultimately push up the rental prices as demand for limited supply increases.
If you take these factors in I’m sure that your property investments will be more viable! Would you like to ask Ryan a business related question? Email: ryanwindsor89@gmail.com

STAG (Safer Thetford Action Group)
Breckland
Accountancy Ltd
During the STAG meeting in February, STAG members got an update about fly-tipping which is one of the 3 STAG priorities. The West Thetford Fly-Tipping Project which is being run by Thetford Community Association (TCA), also involves STAG, the residents groups in West Thetford and partner agencies. Barbara Bysouth (Project Worker) said that as well as reporting fly tips and collecting evidence for follow up actions, she is also working with Flagship Housing and Breckland Council to improve their reporting systems. This will enable local residents to also report fly-tipping more easily and quickly. As well as working with partner organisations to reduce fly-tipping and enforce penalties when there is sufficient evidence, Barbara is developing work to raise community awareness about the anti social aspects of fly-tipping and littering. As part of this, Barbara is working with a group to produce a community and schools education package about fly-tipping and littering, as well as encouraging and supporting ‘clean ups’ as part of the ‘Clean for the Queen’ initiative.

Finally, just a brief update about the STAG priority of the problems caused by heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) travelling ‘in the wrong direction’ along Bury Road. Norfolk County Council confirmed at the meeting that in response to earlier STAG concerns, they have previously installed improved HGV weight restriction signage on Bury Road which goes beyond the legal minimum requirements. STAG members are also looking into carrying out further community volunteer-led checks on traffic. We will report on the third STAG priority of anti-social behaviour in and around the town centre in future articles.
Local knowledge, personalised service
STAG is a multi-agency partnership and comprises five statutory bodies - Breckland Council, Norfolk Constabulary, Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service and Thetford Town Council. Flagship Housing and Victim Support are also actively and positively involved as are residents, community and volunteer groups.

Help On Hand For Cleaning Tasks Maid2Clean is the UK’s largest domestic cleaning agency. Maid2Clean Suffolk operates in 31 Suffolk postcodes and is owned and run by Sue Hall (pictured). “I have three dogs and I am a very busy woman. I know there are a lot of busy people out there or else they are just less able to do what they used to do around the house”, says Sue. Maid2Clean provide fully vetted and insured cleaners to do your housework. Same cleaner each week or fortnight and they also do one off cleans, using all your own cleaning products and equipment so there is no risk of cross-contamination. Sue says, “I have always had a cleaner, it is such a great feeling to come home and find my house all shiny, clean and smelling gorgeous. We are time poor these days and I want all my clients to have that feeling and spend their time doing something that they love to do instead of cleaning.” Maid2Clean Suffolk is also registered with Age UK Suffolk as a domestic cleaning provider and offers discounts on their hourly rates for elderly clients.

Litigated matters can take months and often years to reach the Court room. Mediation can resolve matters sometimes within a day and although the mediator’s fee is generally borne between the parties, it still represents a far more economic process than the incurred costs of hours of lawyers’ preparation leading up to a final hearing.

Mediation - An alternative to the court room
Mediation_Wordagram_2016.indd 1
Whilst there is no guarantee that mediation will be success in all cases, it is certainly a tool worth considering by persons party to a dispute. The fact that matters can be resolved in a more timely and cost efficient fashion is surely an attractive proposition to anybody who has had to resort to or consider the onset of litigation.
18/02/2016 11:31
Rachel Shaw on an option worth considering to bypass time consuming and costly litigation
T
Mediation also provides a certain degree of control for the parties over any outcome reached. In the Court room, the outcome of any dispute is ultimately decided by a Judge. Mediation can often assist in rebuilding relationships between the parties if they have broken down due to the dispute in question. The fact that both parties have voluntarily come to the mediation table indicates a certain amount of willingness to resolve matters, and in the majority of cases any settlement reached involves a certain degree of compromise on the part of the protagonists.
here has been a long held popular perception that litigation through lawyers can be a drawn out and costly process which can be stressful for all parties. Of course in some instances this has been true although the trend now is to try and streamline the litigation process both in the context of time and costs.
Mediation is becoming increasingly popular as a method of resolving disputes. This process involves a trained mediator, usually a lawyer, facilitating and negotiating between the parties with a view to reaching a settlement palatable to all, or at the very least narrowing the issues in dispute. There are many advantages to mediating a dispute. It is a flexible process that can be tailored to the nature of the dispute and to the parties. It can be allocated an hour, a day or longer if need be. The parties can sit together or in separate rooms. They may choose to be represented or unrepresented, although in most matters involving some degree of legal argument and principle, parties are represented by their solicitor or barrister.
For further information or advice concerning dispute resolution, please contact: Rachel Shaw on 01284 755771 or Email: rachel.shaw@rudlings-wakelam.co.uk www.rudlings-wakelam.com
