Another success story…

Thetford’s most expensive sale in almost a decade!

“A very big THANK YOU to the Chilterns team, especially Darren, for making the sale of our property in Thetford painless and a pleasant experience. Being owners of one of the few larger properties in Thetford, we decided to go for Chilterns based on their local knowledge and professionalism. Darren & team dealt with all enquiries from viewing to sale process and eventually completion very efficiently and kept us informed of progress at every stage. We are very happy with the service received and would recommend them to anyone who wishes to sell their house”. Mr & Mrs C, Brandon Road, Thetford (sellers)

Euston Rural Pastimes Event This annual celebration of rural pursuits and agriculture promises another great day out for all ages whilst raising money for a range of local charities and good causes including St. Nicholas Hospice Care. Euston Rural Pastimes Event has been a continuing success since 1979, when it was started to raise funds for essential repairs to Honington church roof. A group of volunteers were given permission to use Euston Park by the Duke of Grafton, who also permitted use of the Estate Farm team. The current Duke, Harry, has continued this generosity notably via the Estate Manager, Andrew Blenkiron. Half of the annual profits are given to St Nicholas Hospice and half to the Blackbourne Churches and local charities. So far after 23 years they have raised 1/2 million pounds through the generosity of the public who continue to come to see this magnificent show.

Out & About Thetford

Thetford Singers concert success

St Cuthberts Church provided a beautiful intimate setting for the Easter Concert, Celebration of English Music. Joined by members of the Bury Friendly Chamber Orchestra and Baritone Soloist Robbie Haylett, Thetford Singers continue to go from strength to strength. The ensemble included four new young members funded by bursaries and singing in their second concert. Starting with Sprig of Thyme by John Rutter, ‘The Keel Row’ trumpeted the arrival of spring, followed by a beautiful rendition of ‘I know Where I’m Going’ before ‘O Can Ye Sew Cushions’ transported the audience to times past. Beautiful singing enhanced by the orchestral accompaniment proved to be a triumphant collaboration. The second half comprised of non secular choral music including Five Mystical Songs by Vaughan Williams. First performed in 1911 at the Three Choirs Festival, Thetford Singers’ rendition of Antiphon created a wall of sound in the church and a fitting end to yet another great concert. New singers are always welcome, contact www.thetfordsingers.org.uk for more information. Local Historian launches new book An excited crowd joined David Osborne as he launched the second in his series of books about Thetford’s Pubs and Beer Houses. David explained, “ The Bell Inn is such an important hostelry in the town, there’s lots of history but unfortunately its early history is shrouded in mystery as so much is undocumented. At the end of the 15th century there’s a tantalising mention of the Bell in a deed, then nothing until the 17th Century when it’s mentioned in the diary of John Rous.” During his research David uncovered an interesting inventory from 1792, relating to Alexander Radcliffe, husband of Betty who also owned the Ancient House shortly after. An appraiser listed the contents of each room, including the yard and business meetings. Included in the book is a beautiful illustration by local artist Dan Morgan of how the inn may have originally looked. David continued, “If I live to be 100, I’d like to cover all the pubs and inns. I’m working on The Anchor at the moment, then Beer Houses as a group, then back to individual pubs.” David is launching his next book, The Red Lion during Heritage Open Day in September. Copies of The Bell are available from Thetford’s Great Information Centre. Eggs for everyone! Thetford Toy Library’s annual Easter Egg Hunt proved a huge success this year with 103 children and their grown ups attending. CBC based Hats Don’t Sell donated a special Magic Egg prize alongside eggs donated by Sainsbury’s. Organiser Michelle Gray said, “It’s our 18th year doing this. It’s lovely to be able to do this here at the CBC, who have been hugely supportive to us, for years we had to use a site away from our home. Now we’re here and everyone can see our facilities.” For more info: thetfordtoylibrary@gmail.com Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

Greenwell Pit opens to the public The team at Grimes Graves recently held a special event to launch the newly opened pit, named after the Cannon Greenwell. Greenwell excavated the pit in 1868 and one of his discoveries was an axe made of Cornish greenstone and the skull of a phalarope placed between two antler picks. These objects appear to have been deliberately placed in this configuration when the gallery was abandoned. Grimes Graves is the only Neolithic flint mine open to visitors in the UK and up to now only one pit has been open to the public. Thanks to a new winch and harness visitors will now be able to descend into the Greenwell Pit and see the mining shaft in its original architectural state. Following a welcome from English Heritage Historic Properties Director Steve Bax, who gave an outline of the plans to further develop the visitor experience, Curator Jan Summerfield explained the history and significance of the site to the guests including the Mayors of Thetford and Kings Lynn and Master Flint Knapper John Lord. Grimes Graves will be holding their second Flint Festival during the summer following the success of the event last August. With the Stone Age now featuring on the National Curriculum, the team lead by Manager Marie Spampanato are keen to share the secrets of this very special site. For more information including opening times and how to book onto Greenwell Pit tours visit www.english-heritage.org.uk

Players present charity fundraising cheques Members of local amateur dramatic group, Thetford Players have presented cheques to two charities recently. Every year they nominate a group or charity they would like to raise money for. During the 2016 Panto, Peter Pan, the group collected money in buckets and from a raffle for Great Ormond Street Hospital. The group then topped up the donations to £1000. Ezra-Mai, pictured above, who collected the cheque said, “As a patient of Great Ormond Street Hospital I would like to say thank you to you all for raising a large sum of money to support the charity. I see Great Ormond Street as a magical place and not necessarily a clinical hospital. I feel that GOSH have been a big part of helping with my treatment, to help me feel better and be able to do normal activities. The money you have raised helps go towards supporting other babies and children. Once again thank you ever so much. All donations help to keep GOSH running.” Over the past year the Players have also been fundraising for local group EPIC, who have provided First Aid cover during the group’s performances. £600 was raised from raffles and other contributions. EPIC founder Sharon Thompson said that EPIC are really grateful for the money which will be used to benefit the children in the group. Have Your Say On New Powers To Tackle Nuisance Behaviour

COMMUNITY CORNER

Resident group meetings taking place in May

Breckland Council is calling on Thetford residents to have their say in shaping new powers that will help tackle nuisance behaviour in the town centre and surrounding areas.

Abbey Tenants and Residents’ Association Meeting on Monday 8th May, 6pm at the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre. Contact Brenda on 07768974026 for more information.

Changes in legislation mean that, in October 2017, Thetford’s existing Designated Public Places Orders (known as alcohol exclusion zones) will automatically be replaced by Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs).

Barnham Action Group Next meeting will be Monday 15th May. 6pm - 6.30pm for surgery time with Councillors and agencies. 6.30pm main meeting. At Fulmerston Church on Fulmerston Road. Contact Ian Dixon, Chairman - 01842 765890 for more info.

These new PSPOs can be more flexible and could be used to place restrictions on other types of anti-social behaviour if these are detrimental to the quality of life to residents, businesses and visitors, and are persistent and continuing in nature. The Council is using this opportunity to get the views of those who live or work in Thetford and put in place wider powers if these are appropriate – these could include prohibiting behaviours such as spitting, or dog fouling. Let Breckland Council know your views by taking part in the online consultation: www.breckland.gov.uk/thetfordpspo

Norwich Road Residents’ Association Next meeting: Thursday 25th May at 8pm Church On The Way, Churchill Road. Redcastle Action Group No meeting in May due to Bank Holiday. Inner Wheel

Women’s Institute

The year began for us with an interesting talk by Judith Muncila an author from Barnham, who introduced us to some play-acting. Do we have some possible Oscar performers?

Croxton Village Hall was the venue on 6th May for the 58th Birthday celebrations of Inner Wheel. It was a very happy occasion with partners, past members and members of Watton Inner Wheel joining us. The speaker on this occasion was Peter Hesketh who gave a very interesting talk on the Circumnavigation of the World on Container Ships. Peter took 4 months travelling on 3 container ships from Southampton to China through the Suez Canal on the first ship. and then to Hong Kong on what he described as an 'unhappy' boat. Finally, from there, through the Panama Canal back to Southampton. While passing Somalia, the ship had crew on 24 hour watch, razor wire placed around the ship, hoses easily available, and then increased it's speed to avoid pirates – a very real threat even to a large ships.

With a membership now of 45 members, we had a good audience for our visit from Ali James from the Thetford Food Bank and we all learnt a lot that evening. Members were very generous in the food items brought in for Ali to take back with her. Quite a different evening was when we invited Genista Davidson to tell us about her passion with Art Deco. Genista came suitably dressed in clothing of the period and with her extensive knowledge, we learnt so much about the architecture, clothing, art and household objects. It was certainly an interesting period from about 1919 until about 1939 within a changing world. We were recently able to have a raffle at one of our meetings which raised £60 for the defibrillator appeal.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Gardening Notes for May At last the trees are in full leaf and new plants are surging into life – particularly the weeds! Although the Brecks are notorious for late frosts, you should be safe to sow seeds direct into the soil. You can also plant out tender plants now. If you have them indoors or in a greenhouse, they will benefit from “hardening off” being left outside during the day but protected again overnight for a few days while they adjust to wind and colder conditions. Daffodils and other bulbs are dying back now. Try to resist removing untidy green leaves as these are the only way you will get a flowering bulb to form for next year. The leaves can be pulled for compost once they start to wither. In the meantime, if you have bulbs that are crowded together or in the wrong place, now is the time to lift them with leaves and roots attached and put them where you want for next year. Primulas and polyanthus could be moved too as you plan your Spring show for 2018! The downside of all the blossom and colour at this time of year is the high pollen count on a sunny day, spelling trouble for those who suffer from hay-fever. Although it has no scientific proof, the consumption of local honey is widely thought to build up a tolerance to pollen. It needs to be a local product because it will contain elements of local pollen and will not have been pasteurised like most commercial honey. No promises that a spoonful a day will increase your immunity but what a good excuse to enjoy some glorious honey (and support our local bee-keepers– surely a win-win situation.) If you are thinking of growing green vegetables for April/May next year, you could give kale a try. The fully mature leaves are rather coarse and fibrous but I have found that if you allow flowering shoots to develop and pick them like sprouting broccoli they are very tender – needing only 2 or 3 minutes to cook. Lettuce and radish can be considered “catch crops” and you could be eating them within a few weeks of putting the seed in the ground. There are many different types of lettuce and Tom Thumb has a particularly sweet flavour and

Some Of The Plants on Show At The Thetford Garden and Allotment Club Spring Show

makes a neat little plant so that you can eat the whole thing at one meal. If you missed out on the bargains at the club’s plant sale outside Dad’s Army Museum, you have another chance to buy some very locally-grown plants as we are holding another sale during the morning of 6th May. The stall will be outside St. Cuthbert’s in the centre of town. Proceeds will be divided between St. Nicholas’ Hospice and the club so come and have a look. This month Don Andrews is giving a talk on his life as a gardener and his love for Dahlias at our meeting. As usual this will be at the URC at 7.30pm on Thursday May 25th; non-members are welcome – entry £2.50, which includes refreshments. There will be a raffle and display of vegetables and flowers in the monthly table-show competition. Do join us.Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

Past & Present

The past photograph of the Bell Inn was taken about 1936 soon after Thetford’s first automatic traffic signal lights were installed. About the same time, plaster was removed from the timber-framed façade of the Bell to reveal the close-studded timberwork. Photographs from the David Osborne Collection.

Thetford Probus Being born in a very rural part of Norfolk in the 18th century might seem an unlikely starting point for someone who became the first European to visit Tibet and other parts of Asia. The story of this extraordinary adventurer and explorer was the subject of a talk by Basil Abbott, of Diss Museum, at Thetford Probus Club’s April meeting. Thomas Manning’s most notable achievement was venturing into the Himalayas to reach Tibet and he met the Dalai Lama. When the present Dalai Lama visited Britain in 2012, he arranged for Thomas Manning’s great great nephew, Robert, to meet him at a celebration held in Westminster Abbey. Robert presented the Dalai Lama with a bottle of Norfolk Lavender Water, as a replacement for a gift given 200 years before that had been dropped by one of Manning’s servants. Manning was a contemporary of Thomas Paine who, for a time, worked as a stay maker in Diss. They met in Paris and, probably as a result, he was known to Napoleon. Years later when Bonaparte was exiled to St Helena, Thomas called at the remote island while sailing back to England and he met the former Emperor who was apparently delighted when Thomas addressed him by his title, much against the authority’s wishes.

Mr Abbott briefly mentioned the next subject which he is currently researching; a talk to honour the R34, the first airship to make a two-way crossing of the Atlantic in 1919, only weeks after Alcock and Brown made their one way crossing in an aeroplane. Deadline for articles and adverts to be included in the June 2017 edition will be the 15th May. E-mail: karen@aboutthetfordmagazine.co.uk Website: www.aboutthetfordmagazine.co.uk

Thetford AI Group Amnesty International (AI) is a global movement of more than 7 million people who take injustice personally. We are campaigning for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all.

presents

We are funded by members, ordinary people. We are independent of any political ideology, economic interest or religion. No government is beyond scrutiny. No situation is beyond hope. Few would have predicted when we started that torturers would become international outlaws. That most countries would abolish the death penalty and seemingly untouchable dictators would be made to answer for their crimes. Our members believe that it is better to light a candle than curse the darkness. Thetford has had an AI Group for many years. The Group meets monthly on a Thursday at 6:30pm in The Bell Hotel lounge. We write letters to government authorities for individuals at risk, usually prisoners of conscience(“PoC”). A PoC is someone who has been imprisoned for expressing their opinion without violence or its threat; often without trial or on a trumped up charge. Letters to authorities lead to the release of about 30% of PoCs and an improvement in prison conditions for most others. We also write to the individuals themselves. This gives them hope in a dark place. Group Contact: john_simong@hotmail.com

Charles Burrell 5K Run Success

Months of organising came through as 92 runners pulled on their trainers for the Charles Burrell’s first run of the year. Runners aged 12 years upwards including Cani- Cross Runners took part in a 5k run starting from the Charles Burrell Centre field and using parts of the Barnham Cross Common and a few wooded trails. Staff from Charles Burrell Centre have been busy organising the 5k for the last few months following the success of their first ever running event a 10km run held in November 2016, Joshua Grayson Deputy Manager at the centre said “it was great to see the amount of people supporting the centre and the community events it puts on especially after all the hard work that has gone into organising it”.

After hosting two successful running events, the feedback from competitors has been really positive. We are now looking to host our next annual 10k on 26th November. We will be unveiling a new bespoke medal design for this event and are really excited to increase the number of competitors to 150 with cani-cross runners also allowed to enter. We would like to thank all those that support our event West Brothers, Stemz Fitness, Tesco’s and Old Skool Bar, and in particularly the volunteers which make it all possible. A Visit To Skawina, One Of Thetford’s Twin Towns By About Thetford Reader, Graham Cooper Having spent three days in the beautiful Polish town of Zakopane in the Tatra Mountains I was driving north heading towards Krakow airport when I noticed signs for Skawina. I knew I had heard of this town and I recognised the name but I could not think why at first. Then realised it was one of Thetfords twin towns. I decided to have have a look around this town as I was early for my flight and I am very pleased I did. Skawina is a commuter town not far from the city of Krakow. It has a population of approx 27500, which is a few thousand more than Thetford. I was greeted by a very nice 'Welcome to Skawina' town sign which clearly shows Thetford as its twin town. Something our sign sadly lacks. On the outskirts of the town is a Tesco supermarket, just like Thetford. I discovered other similarities to our town also, such as a river flowing

A picture of the ‘Welcome to Skawina’ sign. Photos provided by Graham Cooper.

Everyone I spoke to was very proud of their town and interested to know I was from Thetford. They were keen to tell me about Skawina and asked me several questions about Thetford. There was a strong community feel, something that Thetford shares and which we should never lose. There was a sense of pride, streets were clean and I spotted several groups of people clearing flower beds and picking litter, like the fantastic and dedicated volunteers we have in Thetford. I was so pleased I stopped and discovered this town and took a few photos, which are here for you to see.

through the centre. A market square. Large industrial estates, several churches, a pedestrianised shopping street, a pretty town hall and a railway station. I enjoyed walking around the town centre. Despite it being a bitterly cold Polish day, the town had a 'warmth' about it. Not from the nearby huge power station, but from the people!

Editor’s Note: Thank-you to Graham for sharing his experiences with us. If you would like to submit an article that we may like to include in the magazine then please do get in touch: aboutthetfordmagazine@googlemail.com

Work Experience Project Gets the Green Light One of Thetford’s leading Businessmen, Richard Bridgeman of Warren Services (pictured) has launched a pilot scheme to enable young people to access quality work experience. 10 businesses so far have signed up to offer the placements which will initially be advertised at Thetford Academy. Richard explained, “Once we have completed our pilot we are looking to roll out the project to other schools. For over 25 years we have offered ‘work experience’ at Warren Services, many of our current employees started by this route. In fact we refuse to offer full time employment to young people unless they have spent an amount of time with us beforehand. This is twofold because we need to see if they are right for the business, but more importantly that they like us and what we do. I personally believe work experience is vital to young students and gives them a good opportunity to see what’s available for their future employment.”

1109 (Thetford) Squadron Interested in Flying, Gliding, hill walking, mountain biking, water sports, shooting, field craft, sports, the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme plus much much more?

Working with Ann Cutts from Business in the Community and the New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, Richard is now looking for more businesses to become involved and offer work experience placements for young people aged between 16 and 24, to take place during school holidays and at weekends. Once local businesses have produced an advert showcasing their opportunity, the applications will be coordinated by Ann Cutts. Placements should offer real life experience of the world of work, and not impact on the applicants learning, but enhance their career opportunities.

1109 (Thetford) Squadron Air Cadets are recruiting in readiness for their next intake which starts on Wednesday 7th June with an open evening. If you are between the ages of 12 – 17 years old (must be at least in school year 8) then please come down and see the fantastic opportunities which the Air Training Corps offers to young people! For more information and to book your place at the open evening please contact: Sergeant Matthew Drewry, Mobile: 07846 468 717 E-mail: adj.1109@aircadets.org The open evening will be held at: 1109 (Thetford) Squadron, RAF Barnham, Thetford, Norfolk, IP24 2PL commencing at 7pm on Wednesday 7th June.

School Performance Delivers Standing Ovations Thetford Academy Drama Department have celebrated one of their best performances to date, ‘Schools We Will Rock You’ was directed by Year 13 students, Joe Clarke and Jess Howell with the support of teachers Helen Thomas-Jones and Jacqueline Howell. For 3 nights, the cast and crew rocked the audience, ending each show with a standing ovation. The show started with the most entertaining housekeeping brief ever, raising the audience anticipation as to what was to follow. Complete with audio visuals and superb lighting effects, the cherry on the cake had to be the fantastic live band, performing under the guidance of ex pupil Maddie Soan. The group had to learn 32 pieces of music for the show, and as any Queen fan will appreciate, the quality of the music is what makes the show so special. Lead guitarist Jacob Dean explained, “It was a bit tricky, obviously coming from a very talented lead guitarist and there were a few 6 hour rehearsals. It’s definitely been worth it, it came together and I’m really pleased.”

Stealing the show from her peers was newcomer, year 8 pupil, Alicia Berwick in her first lead role. Regular leads Frankie Soan, Thomas Chamberlain, Yasmin Maloy and Luke Jeffries rose to the challenge and sang their hearts out; often with the audience clapping and singing along. A unique rendition of ‘Under Pressure’ followed by a fast paced performance of ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ left the audience aching for more towards the end of Act One. Act Two saw a reprisal of Jasmine Maloy’s superb Killer Queen with ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ and Tom Chamberlain in full rock star mode, encouraging the audience to join in with arm waving and singing during ‘We are the Champions’. Speaking about the performance Tom said, “I feel everything has gone really well tonight. The show’s come together brilliantly after all the work we put in.” Yasmin added, “We’ve all worked so hard for this and I couldn’t be prouder of everyone in it. This is my first major singing role; it’s been a big step for me.” For some of the cast this was their last show before leaving for University or College in the summer. With several younger cast members showing some considerable talent including Alicia, Anelise, Samantha and Jack, the future is looking bright for performing arts at the school and several of the older cast members will be appearing in Thetford Player’s My Fair Lady in July.

From the perfectly wacky Librarian to menacing Commander Khashoggi, the cast brought the performance to the audience, with some stellar performances from the lead actors.

Smooth Operator

Halcyon Days

It’s that time again when we start revealing parts of our body that have been covered up all winter and then have a mild panic about excess body hair. Fear not, it can be removed permanently by intense pulse light (IPL).

Skin Care & Laser clinic

IPL Hair Removal

No longer need we worry about trying to camouflage with make up facial hair or constantly having to shave under arms, bikini lines and legs. Also suitable for men we treat their backs, mono brows, abdomen or chest or if they suffer with problems of ingrown hairs along the collar line. IPL is a non invasive treatment which has the advantage of treating large areas relatively quickly. Another advantage is the hairs need to be quite short as the energy needs to be absorbed into the root and not the length of hair. This heats up the root and kills the hair. Because the hair needs to be in the right stage of growth several treatments are needed but the treatment is every 8—12 weeks depending where it is on the body. Electrolysis is another method of permanent hair removal, using a fine needle inserted into the hair follicle. Heat is applied and cauterises the root, the hair is then removed with tweezers. Many treatments are required as it is a much slower treatment. It can take years!

Waxing may be another option , however this is only temporary ( approx 4—6 weeks ) but the hairs feels softer and finer when they grow back through. What ever methods you decide on for hair removal make sure the treatment is carried out by a professionally qualified therapist. If you opt for the IPL treatment a full consultation and patch test is required prior to treatment. It’s good that we have so much choice these days and there’s no need to worry about embarrassment any longer!

The stage, which we shared with the Fakenham Brass Band, David Wakefield at the mighty Wurlitzer, two very lively ladies doing sign language and the speaker, Canon Heather Butcher, was enormous and the auditorium was so big that we couldn’t see everybody! A collection raised £2,850 for Age Concern Norfolk and the hymn singing had to be experienced to be believed. We all felt privileged to have been part of such an inspirational event and talk on the journey home was all about booking to go next year…and the pleasure of finishing our packed lunches!!!! Thank-you to the Choir and all the friends who helped to make it such a happy and rewarding day. See you on 4th March next year!

Beauty Geek Column ‘Pucker Up’ Season changes, from cold to milder months or from outdoors to indoor central heating often means that the delicate skin that form our lips can suffer. To help combat this I have an easy homemade remedy that works a treat. It’s a simple lip scrub made from items that can be found in your kitchen. Homemade Lip Scrub: 1 tbsp. of coconut oil (solid type), 1 tsp of brown sugar, 1 tsp of honey. Mix together and apply to your lips. If you have an old toothbrush, use this to help exfoliate into the lips and surrounding skin. Take care not to be too rough, as the tissue is very delicate on the lips. The exfoliation action will help to increase the blood supply, which in turn will help plump the lips. Do this 1-2 times a week or as needed. Rinse off once exfoliated and apply a lip balm to moisturise the lips after exfoliation.

Let Your Light Shine Brightly Inspired by #thisgirlcan - a celebration of active women who are doing their thing no matter how well they do it, how they look or even how red their face gets. About Thetford has recently featured articles on Ronnie Dean and Sophie John but when we heard about Josephine Reynold’s new book telling the story of how she was the first female firefighter right here in Thetford, we were intrigued and sent Corinne Fulford to find out more. It was 1986 when I first met Jo Reynolds, a beautiful force of nature. When we met up recently to chat about Jo’s new book, I was delighted to find she hadn’t changed a bit. Thetford is famous for ‘firsts’ and back in the 1980s when Jo was training to become a firefighter, no-one had even heard of the term.

“However, like everyone who works in the emergency services, I had to learn not to let things get to me. There was an unspoken understanding that bonded us like a close family.”

Jo had an early introduction to fire engines when at the age of 12 her rural Welsh family home caught fire. The bravery of the crews involved clearly left a lasting impression and when she saw a recruitment advert at the age of 17 she applied immediately. Jo writes in an easy, accessible style, telling her story of surviving in a male dominated world, where even today only 4% of all staff are female. The book is a great read, it has everything from an escaped ape from the local zoo to one of the worst forest fires on record. Although it’s a light hearted memoir of her time in the fire service, it also has its tragic moments too. She still has flashbacks.

At the age of 18, Jo was making national news headlines because of her chosen career: “I was only 18 and very self-conscious but I thought if I inspired one other woman to become a firefighter too it would be worth it.” Now she’s making history again, what’s next – a TV series, a film? We can’t wait and wish you every success - go Jo and go Thetford!

Breckland Cats Protection Across the UK more than six times as many kittens are being adopted instead of their more elderly friends. Figures across Cats Protection’s 31 adoption centres show currently nearly 10 per cent of cats in care are aged 11 and older. Kitten season is now underway, running between April and September, and with it brings a dramatic rise in older cats being left on the shelf. Across the charity, very young cats often only remain in care for up to 10 days, in comparison to older cats who are left behind for up to 59 days. Improvements in cat care have greatly raised the quality and life expectancy for cats across the UK and many household cats are now living into their late teens and early 20s in good health. Adopting an older cat has many benefits that people often overlook. * Older cats tend to stay close to home so make great companions.

Bonnie is a black and white 8 year old female, who came into our care due to changes in family circumstances. She is a lovely girl and would like a quiet household, where she can live out her years. Tilly is an 8 year old black and white female cat who has been moved from home to home through no fault of her own. She would make an ideal family cat who deserves a forever home.

* They are generally less demanding than younger cats.

All these cats have been fully examined by our vet and have no health issues. They are all neutered, vaccinated, micro chipped, flea’d and wormed. Their adoption fee is £50 which goes towards the cost of our vet bills. If you can offer one of them a home, please call us on the number below.

* They are less likely to scale the curtains or knock your ornaments off the shelf!

For help or advice or assistance with the cost of neutering, ring 01842 810018.

* They are still playful and enjoy companionship, and with many years ahead of them they are ideal for a mature family.

Cats Protection Summer Fayre

* Their characters are fully formed, so you know what to expect.

Saturday 3rd June, 9.30am - 1.30pm

We have a Summer Fayre at St. Cuthberts Church Hall on Saturday 3rd June, from 9.30am to 1.30pm where we sell bric-a-brac, books, jumble, lovely cakes, a tombola, and lots more. We hope to see you there.

Here at Breckland we have several older cats in our care who are looking for that forever home. Benji (pictured top right) is a lovely 6 year old black male cat who loves everybody young and old, and can’t get enough fuss and cuddles and loves to sit on a lap. However, Benji is allergic to certain pollens so he has to be an indoor cat.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust Breckland Local Group

Thetford Society We began the April meeting with a review of the current projects that affect the town and which the society supports. Our speaker this month was Claire Halls from the Raptor Trust, a charity that is manned by volunteers. Firstly, she explained how raptor populations were fairing across the country. She brought a few feathered friends along:

We reformed this group early last year and have held some talks and walks in Watton, East Wretham, Thompson, E.Harling and Thetford. We are now working on our promotions to try to raise awareness of the group and cast our nets a little wider. We hope some of you came to the BTO HQ in Thetford last month and enjoyed our guided walk there.

Owls: Barn Owls (White) hunt at dawn and dusk, whilst Tawny and Long Eared Owls are nocturnal. The Little Owl meanwhile, is a daytime hunter who weighs in at about 107g (about 3 packets of crisps). Despite their small stature, they are able to prey on rabbits, frogs and small birds. They have the ability to hear their prey’s heartbeats from 12ft away, and have eyesight 10 times better than a human’s. One of Claire’s friends was “Biggles” a Little Owl with ‘the character of a Jack Russell and a brain the size of a pea’ (Claire’s words).

On Sunday 14th May, we have a walk on New Buckenham Common with our local reserves officer, Matt Blissett as our guide. We’re hoping to see Green-Winged Orchids. It starts at 10am finishing around 12 noon. Ring 01953 717227 to book.

Don’t be frightened of your staff

F

The reality is that you can never be sure that an employee will not make a claim, however with the requirement that all claimants make an Early Conciliation Notification to ACAS prior to their claim being accepted by the Employment Tribunal an employer ought to have advance notice that a claim may be issued and should therefore have an opportunity to consider their position and whether defending that claim or settling it is more appropriate at that stage.

or employers an employee or former employee bringing a claim against them in the employment tribunal is a problem best avoided.

The costs involved in dealing with such disputes, both in terms of financial burden and management time, can escalate quickly taking valuable resources away from the day to day running of the business. So is there anything that an employer can do to avoid such claims being made against them?

Once ACAS issue a certificate confirming that the Early Conciliation requirements have been met then the Claimant may issue proceedings in the Employment Tribunal.

Of course there are steps which can be taken to minimise the risk. Ensuring you have good management procedures in place will help, as will providing your employees with Contracts of Employment and having an Employee Handbook which is easily accessible to employees. It will depend on the size of your organisation and the type of business you operate as to what areas those policies and procedures contained in the Employee Handbook will cover but, at the very least, you should ensure that grievance and disciplinary procedures are clearly set out and are in line with the ACAS Code of Conduct. An Equal Opportunities Policy coupled with relevant training is also important to minimise the risk of discrimination claims.

It is important that employers seek advice from an experienced solicitor at the earliest opportunity when faced with a potential claim by an employee. In order to minimise the risk of future claims, and to ensure you are best placed to deal with them if they do arise, it is prudent to have an experienced solicitor review your employment contracts and existing policies and procedures on a regular basis to ensure they comply with current law. For more information, please contact Clare Riches on 01842 754151 or via email: clare.riches@rudlings-wakelam.co.uk

When problems do arise, ensure that you follow your own policies and procedures and make sure that any meetings are documented. If your employee later brings a claim against your organisation those notes, taken at the time, will be invaluable as evidence.

Tax Clinic Making Tax Digital for Business (‘MTDfB’) By Colin Chamberlain Some of you may recall that, in his March 2015 Budget speech, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne outlined his new concept of ‘making tax easier’. He said that all the information relevant to an individual would be gathered into the taxpayer’s digital tax account and that this would herald the death of the annual tax return. As you may imagine, some of us in the accountancy and tax professions were somewhat sceptical as to how this would all work in practice and whether or not tax would in fact be made easier. Indeed it did not take long for the ‘making tax easier’ phrase to be officially dropped and replaced by ‘making tax digital for business’. In fact some of my more cynical colleagues have suggested that the resulting ‘MTDfB’ initials actually stand for ‘making tax difficult for business’! So what do we know so far? The following is a summary of our current understanding of the proposal. Digital Record Keeping Businesses and landlords will be required to maintain digital accounting software for their bookkeeping. Spreadsheets will be acceptable but the data created by the spreadsheet will need to be able to convert into a format that can be sent online to HMRC.

Colin Chamberlain from Lovewell Blake

anything which has not been reported in the End of Period Statement – for example, employment income or savings/dividend income – so, a bit like an annual tax return! Payment of Tax The new system will also give taxpayers an option to voluntarily ‘pay as you go’. Transition The new rules will commence at different dates depending on certain criteria as follows: • from April 2018 for taxpayers with turnovers in excess of the VAT threshold (currently £85,000) if they have profits chargeable to income tax and pay class 4 national insurance; • from April 2019 for taxpayers with turnovers below the VAT threshold and who have profits chargeable to income tax and pay class 4 national insurance; • from April 2019 for taxpayers who are registered for and pay VAT; • from April 2020 for taxpayers who pay corporation tax.

Quarterly Updates There will be a requirement to submit quarterly on-line updates to HMRC.

There is an exemption for businesses with a turnover of less than £10,000 and for those who can genuinely show that they are digitally excluded.

End of Period Statement The quarterly updates are not required to include any tax adjustments for items such as capital allowances or expenditure that is not allowable for tax. These adjustments will be made after the end of the accounting period on an End of Period Statement.

Conclusion MTDfB will herald a major change for the way which businesses interact with HMRC. If you would like more information on this or any other issue please contact Colin Chamberlain on 01842 755032 or at: c.chamberlain@lovewell-blake.co.uk

Final Declaration In addition to submitting the End of Period Statement, the taxpayer will be requested to make a Final Declaration. This will be used to report to HMRC

Thetford Dolphins

Let’s Get More Women Into Golf

Thetford Dolphins swimmers travelled to Kings Lynn for round 1 of the Anglian League and put in a creditable performance against strong opposition. Maisie Francis was victorious in the girls 13y/u 100m back(Pb) as was Alice Fasey in the girls 15y/u 100m back. Personal bests were achieved by Emily Duffy, Benjamin Flood, Alfie King, Georgina Dickenson, Daniel Clark, Alice Fasey, Maisie Francis and Benjamin Trowell. Well done to all Dolphins who competed.

Feltwell Golf Club is planning a Free Taster Day on Sunday 25th June, starting at 2.00pm as part of England Golf’s Campaign – THIS GIRL CAN, IN NORFOLK. Whether you are a beginner or have played for some time please come along on the 25th June and enjoy a couple of hours touring the Club, hit some balls on the Range under the supervision of a PGA Professional, getting to meet some of our ladies over a glass of wine or cup of coffee and maybe even take part in a Putting Competition. Taking up Golf is an ideal opportunity to get some exercise, fresh air and do all this in really good company and it needn’t take all day, we are a 9 Hole course, so a couple of hours is all you need and if you are new to golf, don’t worry, we were all there once! If you are a beginner and nervous about starting why not come one Friday at 9.30am, and meet everyone and just walk the course with us. For more information please contact Kim Heybourne, Secretary at Feltwell Golf Club (next to Feltwell Air Base) or Denise Whiting (Ladies Captain) on either 01842 862079 or 07986 290532.
