Community Governance Review Moves To Stage 2 Consultation Following on from public consultations held earlier this year on the administrative changes requested by Thetford Town Council, Breckland Council is now calling on residents in these parishes again, to give their views on revised proposals. Feedback is also sought from those living in the adjacent parishes of Croxton, Brettenham, and Kilverstone. The consultation began on 16th April and will run until 22nd June 2018. Thetford Town Council submitted a proposal to Breckland Council earlier this year which triggered a formal Community Governance Review (CGR) - a statutory process whereby district councils can create parish councils, review and change boundaries and carry out a number of other reviews. The consultation is organised by Breckland Council, who are managing the CGR process. The first stage consultation for Thetford received 525 responses. Over 400 of these responses were in favour of the boundary being changed so that the 5,000 houses due to be built fall within the boundary of Thetford. Given that the residents in these houses will inevitably benefit from services provided in Thetford, the Town Council’s view is that they should be expected to contribute financially to them through their Council Tax. This will only happen if the boundary is changed. Despite over 75% of the responses supporting the boundary move, the Breckland Council committee conducting the process voted to support “no change” to the current boundary. Residents are now being consulted on this option. Cllr Mark Robinson, Breckland Council Executive member for Governance said: "I'd like to thank everyone who took part in the first consultation your views and suggestions have helped inform the proposals that are going forward for the second stage of consultation. Now we need you to get involved again all the information you need about the revised proposals is on our website and officers will be happy to help” Details of the changes requested can be found at: www.breckland.gov.uk/ CGR-secondconsultation-2018 Responses to the consultation should be sent via the online form on the website, by email to: elections@breckland.gov.uk
Map of the Thetford Council Boundaries
Thetford Town Councillor Chris Harvey said: “I am very disappointed that despite a clear majority of people being in favour of moving the boundary, this has been ignored. The committee noted that just 2% of Thetford residents responded to the consultation so I therefore call upon each and every resident to respond to this so that we turn that 500 response rate into 5,000. This is the single biggest issue facing Thetford and we need to pull together as a community”. You can also respond to the consultation by letter, send to; Breckland Council, Democratic Services, Community Governance Review, Elizabeth House, Walpole Loke, Dereham, NR19 1EE. All feedback received will be published on the council website in accordance with the statutory process. After the second stage consultations close, Breckland Council's Community Governance Sub-Committee will consider these responses before making a final recommendation to Council in the Autumn.

Marathon Challenge For Leaping Hare’s Jake Some of you will know Jake Shannon as Manager of Thetford’s Great Information Centre, where he began as a volunteer. His passion for all things Thetford shone through and an apprenticeship has helped him realise his ambition of conveying that passion to others. Jake is also part of the team behind the information centre – Leaping Hare CIC, which started in October 2010 with the key aim of providing the Town with an information centre. A CIC (community interest company) is a ‘not for private profit’ organisation and still a relatively new concept, first conceived out of a reasoned necessity that Charities and ‘not for profit’ groups needed to have flexibility to trade more conventionally as a limited company but maintain an ethos to foster a social purpose. We don’t receive regular funding and we believe that information needs to be free of charge so fundraising takes up a lot of our time. This year Jake decided to really up the ante and will run 10 marathons in 10 days - the Great Barrow Challenge. Great Barrow is the home of the only multi-terrain 10 day festival of marathon running in the UK and takes place Thursday 28th June - Saturday 7th July 2018. Jake was inspired by the lovely Mel Sturman who is helping with his training and will run with him. Many of you will know her from being behind Thetford Parkrun and being well on her way to running 200 marathons and this challenge will see Mel being the only British woman to achieve six 10 in 10s – wow!
Jake has set an ambitious target of raising £3,000. If you would like to help him, we have sponsor forms and a donation pot in the shop and an on-line donation link.
Mel says: “I know from experience how hard this challenge is but dedication and hard work will get him through. I hope people give generously for his efforts”.
Jake will also be blogging, so look out for our updates on Leaping Hare’s website; www.leapinghare.org Facebook (leapinghare) and Twitter (@leapinghareorg)
Jake says: “I know lots of people enjoy the services provided by Leaping Hare so any amount you can spare will be gratefully appreciated and remember I’m putting myself through this so that you don’t have to!”

Our May ‘Thetford Face’ is local historian and author David Osborne. Each month David supplies the images and information for our Past and Present page drawing from his extensive photographic collection. Have you lived in Thetford all your life? Aside from the 15 years when I was in the army. I was always going to come back here to live. What was drawing you back to the town? I always wanted to come back to the town where my wife and I grew up, so I bought a house in the town. That was when I started taking an interest in local history once I’d come out of the army. Did you do National Service? No, I was an army apprentice. When I left Thetford Secondary Modern School (now the Charles Burrell Centre) I went to work at a silk screen printing firm on the new industrial estate, and then into the army aged 15. What did you do in the army? I was an apprentice painter, decorator and sign writer. I always wanted to do something creative, but my Dad told me to get a trade. I enjoyed my time in the army and had plenty of adventures.
Marching through Stratford-Upon-Avon with fixed bayonets, March 1977. The Regt David was serving with had the Freedom of the town, so this was an annual tradition. David is the corporal in the middle, front rank.
What did you do once you returned to Thetford? I got a job at Green King Brewery as a Foreman Painter. I spent 18 years there before working for myself for 16 years. During this time I was also researching Thetford’s history and beginning to write my books. When did you publish your first book and how many books have you written since? In 1984, it was A View of Thetford Past, a small sized book with images of Thetford. I’ve written 15 books to date, I’m currently working on the history of The Anchor which is book four of my Inns, pubs and beerhouses series. I’ve really enjoyed finding out the history behind some of the town’s most well known buildings. In 2019 I will start working on Thetford’s beerhouses.

How have you been uncovering Thetford’s history aside from traditional research methods? Every now and again people approach me to tell me about Thetford. I’ve also helped on exhibitions and I’ve built up a big collection of watercolours, photos, ephemera, postcards, slides and mugs all about Thetford. When I do talks people sometimes bring bits to show me or occasionally give me things to add to my collection. I’ve also given a few bits and pieces to Ancient House in the past. Are you involved in any other groups within the town? I regular help the ‘Sex, Rock n Roll and Weeding’ group. We clean up and weed areas of the town once a week. I give talks to local groups around the town including the Ancient House Museum, and Thetford Society. Occasionally I also help the Thetford Society with their projects. I was one of the founding members, and attended the inaugural meetings in the early 1980s. The society started because the town had a bad reputation, and we wanted to present the town in a better light, a campaign for Thetford if you like. This year is the society’s 25th anniversary. I helped the Brecks Society with their vernacular architecture survey of Thetford. I’m part of the Thetford Remembers project, commemorating WW1. I was involved in the Burrell Museum from when it was first started until 2012. I painted several of the engines on display. Do you do anything else to promote Thetford’s heritage? I’m often asked to write pieces, including a blog for Norfolk Postcard Club, the Breck Society and the Past and Present page for About Thetford. Years ago I used to do a regular freature for the then Thetford and Watton Times on Thetford’s history.
David with his most recent book, ‘The Red Lion Thetford, A History’
I think about all the things that have gone on, good and bad. I feel like I’m a link in a long chain. My roots are really deep in the ground, I can remember Thetford before the overspill, in the 1950s when it still had so much of the Victorian town. We are lucky that within a few steps there’s the river, the countryside and there’s people doing all sorts of things to help the community. Sadly when I go, I’ll be the last Osborne in Thetford as my children have moved away.
Coming Up...
Next month we will be featuring a young Thetford motocross star who’s been making headlines and winning tournaments across the UK. What is the best thing about living in Thetford? Satinder Sartaaj and The Black Prince Karen was delighted to receive any invitation to interview Punjabi superstar Satinder Sartaaj before his concert in Gravesend recently. Karen and Satinder first met when she worked at Ancient House Museum and shared an interest in the story of Maharajah Duleep Singh and his family. Last year saw the release of ‘The Black Prince’, an internationally acclaimed film about the story of the Maharajah. Although well known for his music and poetry, Satinder Sartaaj is also a university lecturer and has a love of historic buildings and natural history. Are you pleased with the response The Black Prince received? The response was outrageous, so overwhelming across the globe especially in England. The film is a story about England as Duleep Singh spent most of his life in this country.
Satinder Sartaaj and the obligatory photo with Captain Mainwaring on a recent visit to Thetford
about him, looked at every picture of him. Looking through Peter Bance’s collection helped. I took acting and speech lessons in LA to learn how to speak with an 18th century English accent. It was a combined effort by historians, scriptwriters, directors and actors. It was a beautiful experience in my life.
Too busy?
Do you think that having an interest in Maharajah Duleep Singh helped you play the role? That was the beauty of The Black Prince, people from all round the globe said, “You were the best person to portray Duleep. You have that calmness, that face, that personality, that image.” People often think that my attire for the stage looks Maharajah like. I think The Black Prince had the best script and the locations were most astonishing. I think the film was the best I could do with the subject. I’ve had people comment to me about how well the Winterhalter painting and other family images were replicated in the film. How did you prepare for the role? That’s the beauty of the makeup and costume department. They did a great job all the way through, the art department too. I visited every single place Duleep visited, even where he died in Paris. The research behind The Black Prince was so good. It took 5 years of my life studying Duleep. I read every book

Has starring in the film impacted on your life? When I arrived in Heathrow and we were driving to Gravesend I felt so nostalgic to be back. The countryside is just so beautiful. I’ve been to Elveden Estate and met Lord and Lady Iveagh. We had dinner and they talked to me about the interiors of Elveden Hall and the land on the great Estate. I have a great affection for the Estate and would really like to see the interior of the Hall. You always receive a warm welcome when you come to Thetford, how do you feel about the town? I still remember the very first time I visited Thetford in 2010, it’s been 8 years since and every time I visit England, I visit Thetford, it was Duleep’s home and now Editorial:TEMPLATE I MCP think of it as my home as well.12/09/2013 08:13 Page 1

You have been asked to be Patron of the Festival of Thetford and the Punjab, how will you support the festival? It is a great honour to be asked. To be a Patron is a huge honour for me, it’s something I never expected and I will do my best. I hope to come to Thetford before my tour reaches Canada. The Black Prince sparked international interest in Maharajah Duleep Singh’s story and has raised the profile of Thetford, especially the Ancient House Museum with British Sikhs. Is this something you were hoping to achieve? Yes, because the majority of the community didn’t know about Duleep’s story. They didn’t consider him as an actual hero of Sikhism. Somehow they thought that because he had converted to Christianity, he never did anything for his religion, culture, language or society because they didn’t know the story of Duleep. After The Black Prince they saw his journey and his efforts for his country. Now everyone knows how he suffered trying to reclaim his country. That was an achievement and I’m glad that people understand Duleep’s story. That was why I did the film. Satinder Sartaaj recreating the famous Winterhalter painting usually on display at Osborne House
What was the impact like in Canada or other countries with large Sikh communities? After England, the biggest critical gathering was in Australia, the most growing market for Punjabis. It was amazing as it’s mainly 1st and 2nd generation Punjabis there, so that was a great achievement. After Australia, it was Canada, America then New Zealand. It was overwhelming in Canada as the film was not a Hollywood movie. How was the film received in the Punjab? It was good, but not as good as here in England. Mainly because it was in English, not that many people speak English in the Punjab; it is the 6th or 7th language there. But there were some people who watched it 16 or 17 times, taking different groups of people with them and sometimes they even had Langar (a symbolic free meal available in Gurdwaras) served in the theatres. That was a beautiful thing. I’m so happy about the response; I did have people tell me that they had heard about the film even though they hadn’t seen it. I think when we release the online version of the film before my Wembley concert, people will watch it.
What are you doing at the moment, are you hoping to make any more films? I am just starting my worldwide tour called The Black Prince, starting with touring across England. The DVD of The Black Prince film is just being released as well. I will only make another film if it’s unique, not just another movie. The Festival of Thetford and the Punjab runs from 7th to the 21st July. Further details will be available in future additions of the About Thetford magazine

Out and About Thetford
New Exhibition at Café One Keystone’s Art Café
and the Women’s Art Group have unveiled a joint exhibition celebrating Women. Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Denis Crawford joined invited guests at the launch to find out how women have inspired the groups and see the final pieces of work on display. CEO Louise Humphries explained, “We have been celebrating 100 years of women’s suffrage, researching, discussing and creating art. The project has been running since Women’s suffrage centenary in February. I’d like to Mayor of Thetford with members of the Art Cafe thank the Government Equalities Office for their funding”. Lead by artist Claire Nelmes, the group has not only produced pieces of art, but also their list of 100 inspiring women. Claire explained “It’s been really good for the Art Café, they’ve really responded to the theme. We’ve had lots of discussions over the 5 weeks, including the men and their work is the product of their own ideas. It’s also been good fun, it’s given the group an opportunity to put all the skills they’ve learnt over the past few years into practice.” The exhibition is open at Café One until Tuesday 22nd May from 9am – 2pm, Monday to Friday. For more information on Café One visit the website: www.keystonetrust.org.uk U3A Open Day Success Organisers of Thetford’s U3A branch are celebrating another successful Open Day and the recruitment of 25 new members. With over 40 different interest and activity groups, the branch is thriving. The Open Day gives existing members a chance to find out about other activities going on under the U3A umbrella. This year will see a big change at Thetford U3A, after 4 years Lynn Ready, the first chair will retire at the AGM. Speaking about the Open Day Lynn said, “It’s been a very good turn out, most of the groups are represented here. I’ve had lots of new people talk to me; it will be lovely to welcome them as new members. The Leisure Centre is a great venue for our Open Day as our sports groups can also join in. We’ve just gone over 400 members which is brilliant.” Catherine Dubois presented Lynn with a gift from all the groups as a token of their thanks for her leadership over the past few years. The latest Thetford U3A magazine was also available at the Open Day. The magazine shares stories of members achievements such as Judy Chisman’s Mont Kilimanjaro climbing adventure, and the success of the table tennis group who now pit their skills against a robot! Mr and Mrs Onner from Weeting told Karen, “We’ve joined today, a friend of ours belongs to this U3A, and we thought we’d come along after hearing about all the things she takes part in. We’re interested in the daytrip group and the art club.” Another success on the day was the photography group’s large display of their work; the group has 28 members of all abilities who all use a variety of cameras including phones. Many of the groups reported that they had attracted new members during the event. Spring Concert Triumph Thetford Singers were joined by Newmarket Chamber Orchestra and guest soloists
for a performance of Mozart’s Requiem. An eager audience filled the pews of St Cuthbert’s for Thetford Singers annual Spring performance. The church made the perfect venue, the Sequenz filled St Cuthbert’s with beautiful melodic music, creating a moving, intimate performance. With outstanding soloists, a superb orchestra and excellent musical direction by Chris Parsons, Thetford Singers proved again that they are just going from strength to strength. It was a real treat to see live quality classical music performed in Thetford. One of the highlights of the evening was Lacrimosa, a very well known part of Mozart’s Requiem. It was beautifully executed, a performance that any orchestra and choir would be proud of. Astonishingly, Thetford Singers met with Newmarket Chamber Orchestra for the first time that afternoon. It is a real testament to the talent of Chris Parsons that both organisations performed together seamlessly. Thetford Singers now have 57 singers including four young people and have seen an increase in the number of male voices joining their ranks. Thetford Voices have now joined together with Thetford Singers, and have established Quire of Voices, the junior branch of Thetford Singers. With this in place the future of singing in Thetford is now secure and can only benefit from such collaborations. Thetford Singers do not hold auditions; anyone with a love of singing is welcome to join. For more information visit: www.thetfordsingers.org.uk
Pip Jenson retires from Thetford Singers Well loved Thetford musician Pip Jepson recently retired
as Thetford Singers accompanist after 17 years. Pip has performed across East Anglia and is an associate of the Royal College of Music. Presenting a large bouquet of flowers, Sue Garland on behalf of the Singers said, “Pip, you’ve been there for all of us, you’ve been incredible, through thick and thin. You will be sorely missed.” Pip has been a feature on Thetford’s music scene for many years, when she first arrived in Thetford with her husband John in the 1960s, she started a string quartet, “I played the violin, Hector Sutherland played cello and the four of us gave a concert in the Guildhall.” Pip reminisced. After this Pip formed an orchestra, getting musicians together from across the district. “We rehearsed at Redcastle Furze School, people came from across Norfolk to join in.” Pip then decided that there wasn’t much going on in Thetford for music and drama so she helped to start the Thetford Music and Drama Group. “I had an idea to perform a concert once a month in the Guildhall and encouraged young people to play. I taught at Redcastle Furze for 10 years and was always keen to get young people involved in music.” In more recent times Pip continued to support singing workshops and groups in the town. John Weeks from Thetford Voices said, “Pip was a very supportive accompanist when I first worked with the Singing Groups at Thetford Music Project in the days before Thetford Voices”.

Back in the folk music heyday of the sixties and seventies, many of the country’s pre-eminent folk artists could be heard performing at Thetford Folk Club. Some forty years later, and with a few local musicians recognising a renewed audience interest in experiencing live music up close and personal, Thetford Folk Club has returned as a natural progression from the thriving Open Mic music scene in the town. Now with regular music nights at the Carnegie Room, Thetford Folk Club is proudly presenting fantastic folk, roots and acoustic music guest acts, along with floor spots from up and coming and established local artists. Remaining dates for 2018, all Fridays: 25 May, 22 June, 20 July, 24 August, 21 September, 19 October, 16 November www.thetfordfolk.club Come along and support local musicians and have a great night.
NEW! Save the dates: Friday 14 & Saturday 15 December Yes, we know it’s only May but be sure to put these dates in your diary as this will be one party you do not want to miss and reservations are already being made. These amazing parties will take all the stress out of organising this year as booking your places couldn’t be simpler and these are all about having a great night out right here in Thetford. Casino tables and a cocktail bar really add to the brilliant atmosphere that only Gary Winter can create. Gary is a great vocalist and always knows exactly how to get a party started! Christmas dinner will be accompanied by Simon Brown on piano. A £15 deposit secures your place (with remaining balance due by the end of September). Guest Singer For April Society Meeting The April meeting of the Thetford Society began with a vote of thanks for Pat Smith, one of our stalwart committee members who after seven years of booking our monthly speakers has decided to step down, whilst she is not leaving us, we will definitely miss her energy behind the scenes. We did not have a guest speaker this month – instead we had a guest singer! Rachel Duffield entertained us with a skip through her 1940’s Songbook. Her grand entrance was in period costume with a Union Flag laced through it and she started with the well-known, ‘It Had To Be You’. Rachel pointed out that many songs from this period were either very sentimental or upbeat and slightly flirty due to the war-time separation that many endured. Throughout her show there was audience participation and she embarrassed many a gentleman! There was much finger clicking to ‘Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy’ from the film ‘Buck Privates’ (1941). Train noises were demanded during ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’, some people seemed rather too enthusiastic with their Woo Woos! We were treated to favourites such as; ‘A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square’ (1939), ‘On the Sunny Side of the Street’, ‘I Got Rhythm’, ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’, ‘Sally’, ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ and a German love song from WW1 which was released in English by Marlena Dietrich in 1944 ‘Lilly Marlene’. To finish a thoroughly good evening in patriotic style, there was plenty of flag waving to hits such as ‘The White Cliffs of Dover’ and ‘There’ll Always Be an England’. Our next event will be at 7.15pm on Tuesday 1st of May 2018 at the United Reformed Church on Earl Street, when we will welcome Rick Lewis, with a talk on traditional carpentry from tree to house. New members are always welcome, our monthly meetings are only £1 entry, we look forward to meeting you.

Popular Open Garden Event To Return Green-fingered fundraisers are urging people to enjoy a collection of “golden gardens” opening their gates across Thetford while raising funds in aid of a charity. The popular Thetford Open Gardens event will take place on Sunday 1st July, and will once again see gardens of all shapes and sizes showcased in aid of a good cause. This year you will be able to find a golden yellow plant in each garden, generously donated by Thetford Garden Centre, and one garden celebrating a Golden Wedding, will be “dripping in gold”! Last year’s event attracted hundreds of visitors and raised £9,802 for St Nicholas Hospice Care, which will also benefit from the 2018 day. Each year visitors flock to enjoy the event with many remarking on how friendly everyone is and how beautifully diverse the gardens are. Miranda McCoy, St Nicholas Hospice Care community fundraiser, said: “Thetford Open Gardens is a treat in the open gardens season. From the small yet fully packed treasures to the larger gardens, there is something for everyone. It is a great day out for all and at the same time, all the funds it raises will help the hospice to continue to care for and support those in the

Thetford community and beyond. I hope as many people as possible can join us on the day.” Admission is by programme - available from Thetford Garden Centre and Thetford’s Great Information Centre. Gardens will be open from 11am-5pm. The event is being generously sponsored by Lawsons Estate Agent for the twelth year. Thetford Garden and Allotment Club At last we should be free from frost by the end of this month; but late frosts are still possible so it’s a good idea to keep some fleece to hand to protect fruit blossoms if your area is at all exposed. Potatoes will shoot again if they get scorched by frost but earthing up generously will give them some protection; the mound of earth also keeps the new tubers out of the sunlight and prevents them going green later in the season. Runner beans do not recover so well, so keep an eye on the weather forecast and give them protection if needed. Your seeds should get going quickly now so this will be a busy month for establishing the vegetable area. You can check if seeds from last year are worth sowing by scattering a few on a damp paper towel and seeing if they start sprouting. Be sure to make a note of what is where as well as the name and producer of the seed so that you can work out what you want to buy again next year. While the ground is fairly moist it is a good idea to spread compost in the flower garden. As well as keeping the ground damp, the humus will gradually break down into the soil, improving its texture and capacity to hold moisture. You can make the dryness work for you on the vegetable patch by hoeing regularly to keep weeds at bay. Insects are getting into their stride now. You can encourage some allies in the form of ladybirds, lacewings and hoverflies to keep the aphids under control by planting poached-egg-plants or fennel. Once you 1-8th have fennel, it will happily reseed itself 08:28 and Sullivan Advert_Layout 1 14/12/2016 make a dramatic addition to the garden.

Ladybirds are great at controlling aphids !
Our native birds are well into their nest making so if possible leave any major work on hedges till later in the season to avoid causing disturbance. If you are considering a new lawnmower, look at a ‘mulching’ or ‘recycling’ model which chops and spreads the grass as it goes. The cuttings break down very rapidly and this can provide 70% of the nitrogen needs of the lawn. This month there will be a plant sale outside St Cuthbert’s Church on Saturday 5th between 9am and 12 Noon. The club are combining with Thetford Open Gardens for this event so half the proceeds will go to St Nicholas’ Hospice. (The actual Open Gardens Day is on 1st July this year.) Our club meeting is on the 24th and our speaker is Caroline Spinks of the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. Non-members are most welcome – come along to the United Reformed Church in time for the talk to start at 7.30pm. Happy gardening! Sue Pilgrim

New Gardening Group For Women A new gardening group for ladies is starting at the Riversdale Centre on Tanner Street in Thetford. The group is part of a larger international project co-funded by the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund of the European Union. The aptly named Urbagri4Women project involves partners from seven different European countries with the UK group being run by GYROS, a migrant support charity based in Great Yarmouth and supported by local charity Keystone Development Trust. GYROS will be running two gardening groups: one in Great Yarmouth and one in Thetford. The project aims to bring women from all over the world together to engage in urban gardening as a social enterprise, with a training programme embedded. Participants have free rein to plan what they grow and where, and the training element covers topics such as European Languages, Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Cooking. Sessions will run from 10 – 2pm every Friday and will include lunch. All are welcome to join the group, and we are particularly looking to work with members of Thetford’s migrant communities.

The group hosted an open garden event in April with other events planned in the future. People are invited to drop in for some gardening and cake and see what the group is all about. Easter Monday’s bad weather prevented all but a small number of visitors attending – but over the two days, the total attendance at the gardens was around 200, which meant just over £1000 went to NGS charities. At the church, where visitors came in for a warm as well as the other things on offer, the two days yielded trading in refreshments, books, church guides and donations of over £500. Can You Give A Hen A Home? ‘Fresh Start for Hens’ is a not for profit organisation who work with farmers to try to rehome their hens at the end of their commercial lives, rather than have them sent for slaughter. These hens will be approximately 17 months old. Fresh Start for Hens collect the hens from the farms and they are then distributed around the country to a number of collection points. The local collection point is just outside Watton. People can reserve hens by going to our Facebook page, ‘Watton Norfolk Fresh Start for Hens’, or the main website: www.fsfh.org.uk We ask for a donation of £2.50 per hen. This covers payment to the farmer and costs involved in the rehoming, such as fuel, van hire etc. We do ask to see a picture of people’s coops and gardens/chicken runs to ensure that they are going to a safe secure home. We guarantee to take every hen from the barns when we collect. We won’t leave any hen behind. This means that we have to find homes for them all. I believe on the upcoming rehome we are looking to place 6,000 hens throughout the country.
As a pet, a hen is a wonderful choice. They are full of character, loving, entertaining and extremely intelligent. Plus, an added bonus is gorgeous fresh eggs. There is no better sight than a hen sprawled out on the grass sunbathing.
The Great Plastic Pickup Breckland Council, Thetford Town Council and Keep Britain Tidy are joining together as part of the national ‘Great Plastic Pickup’. Local residents are encouraged to take part on the 11th May 2018 from 9:30am - 11:30am. The aim is to try to inspire thousands of volunteers to collect 15 million plastic bottles plus aluminium cans and general litter nationally, and we would like Thetford to be a part of it. We would like this to be a large social spectacular with everyone showing support to Thetford and reducing street litter and river litter. The walk will start at 9am at Castle Park, walking down to the bottom of King Street, turning left towards the river side area, Button island, and then walking onto Spring walks and finishing around Nuns Bridges and the grass areas around 11am. Leave That Baby Bird Alone – Mum Is Watching The first baby birds are appearing in and around Thetford. Blackbirds have just fledged in my garden, three in all, and they look incredibly vulnerable as they sit around the garden calling to attract their parents in the hope of another beakful of worms. And this is the problem: they look helpless and all alone. In most cases this couldn’t be further from the truth. The parent birds will know where each of their youngsters are and will be busy collecting food for them, whilst keeping an ear and an eye out for danger. The young birds are also quite capable of scurrying, flapping and hopping their way out of danger and in most cases are best left to their own devices. The problem comes when they are in real danger. Twice this week I have moved a couple of the young Blackbirds from my garden path and placed them in the shrubs nearby. They would be easy prey to the neighbourhood cats on my path, but much harder to catch in the shrubbery. So, if you come across a baby bird the very best thing to do is to leave it alone, or, if it looks like it might be in danger of being run over, taken by a cat or trodden on, move it to a safer spot nearby. Make sure it’s as nearby as possible as the adult birds will be looking in this spot for their baby. To know if a baby bird is truly abandoned, watch it for a while. The adult birds should visit every twenty minutes or so with food, but if they’re not, consider calling a wildlife hospital. The nearest to Thetford is in East Winch. The staff at wildlife hospitals have the expertise needed to feed young birds. Feeding a young bird is very time consuming; they have to be fed every twenty minutes or so throughout the day, and the right kind of food. It’s a task that shouldn’t be undertaken lightly.

Local Business Donates To Charity Gardening Project The Horticultural Industry Scheme (THIS) based at the Charles Burrell Centre is now able to grow crops using a hydroponic system thanks to a generous donation from a Thetford based business. Thetford Urban Gardens Ltd based in Brunel Way organised the donation worth in excess of £500. Business owner Steven Baldwin said, “I’m a local lad, I’ve lived in Thetford all my life and just wanted to help. I went to the school and so did my kids, so I thought it would be great to help THIS.” Steven originally met Tim from THIS last year at the CBC Open Day and saw the vertical growing system the project had installed. “We’ve been in business for the past 5 years and I thought it was time to give some thing back and share my skills. ” Nutriculture donated a Wilma grow system which will be used to grow tomatoes and chillies, and Dutch Pro provided a selection of seeds and tools. Mark Price from Dutch Pro joined Steven when they visited THIS along with to hand over the equipment and give advice on producing crops. Georgina Keatley from THIS said, “We are delighted with the help Steven and Mark have given us, this is a really exciting system to learn how to use and it will be interesting to see how our crops come on. It’s great that another local business is willing to share their expertise with us and help the project.”

Talk Traces Changing Times For Town It’s not the first time that local historian David Osborne has given a talk to Thetford Probus Club members, but he never fails to come up with an entertaining and informative presentation, comprehensively illustrated with his own pictures and those from local archives. ‘Thetford Past & Present’ was the title of his latest talk at the club’s April meeting, and as it suggests, it explored the changes in the town, many of them taking place in our lifetime and also over past centuries. Mr Osborne emphasized that change is always taking place and he added that he would love to be around in another hundred years’ time to see what other changes there will be in the future. As to the past, he pointed out that Thetford had once been a busy inland port connected by a river network to the sea. During the 18th and 19th centuries there was a thriving trade with malt, leather, agricultural machinery and fertiliser made in the town, while coal, timber and bricks were brought in by the horse-drawn barges. Today, there are still reminders of the past, but the townscape has seen big changes and amazingly although traditional labour-intensive industries have long gone the population has more than trebled.
David’s books available to buy at Leaping Hare
Long before the creation of the NHS, the Cottage Hospital was entirely funded by public subscriptions and donations from local benefactors. While the Corporation of Thetford funded the local fire brigade, before the post-1939-45 War years, and the town’s single ambulance was donated by members of a local family and relied on public generosity. After taking questions, members showed their appreciation to Mr Osborne in the usual way. During April members have organised a visit to the Stanta Battle Area.
Mr Osborne’s encyclopaedic-knowledge of Thetford has been achieved by his enthusiasm for the town and his relentless research that might well be called detective work, which turns up some surprising secrets such the dungeons hidden beneath the old Gaol in Old Market Street. But in the case of other more familiar things that we routinely see, he also explained why they are there. The coat of arms on King’s House, for example, are those of James I who once owned the building.

Brandon and District Photographic Club Do you have a rarely used camera sitting in the bottom of your cupboard with a good layer of dust covering it due to lack of use? Now is the time to dust it off and give it an outing to the Brandon and District Photographic Club. No matter if it’s a very grand piece of equipment, with lenses and tripod, or a modest pocket unit. Film or Digital, a camera is a camera and should not suffer the indignities of lack of use. We, at the Club, will give you, and your camera, a hearty welcome and you can learn everything there is to know about taking images to your liking. Or, if you are fully conversant with the workings of your forlorn camera, you can, maybe, teach us all a thing or two! There are arranged trips out, workshops, tuition talks and demonstrations, exhibitions and competitions all arranged for meetings held twice monthly on a Wednesday evening.
We have two Competition Evenings coming up on the 25th April and the 9th May respectively. These evenings are a fun way to see member’s work. However, there is absolutely no pressure for anyone to enter any competitions. It’s entirely up to you. Why not pay us a visit? On the 23rd May we have Mr Nik Szymanak giving an illustrated talk on Astro Photography. The evening is open to family, friends and non-members at £5.00 per person including entry, tea/coffee and cake/biscuits. All are welcome, and this interesting subject is sure to encourage you to photograph the night sky.

Inner Wheel Celebrates Charter The April meeting of Thetford Inner Wheel celebrated the 59th Charter (Birthday) lunch and was attended by members and their partners, past members and members of Watton Inner Wheel. Thetford Rotary Club President, Brian Farrell brought greetings from Rotary and quoted from an address given in 1959 by Ellis Clark, after the Thetford Inner Wheel Club was founded. “In 1958 the Inner Wheel club of Thetford was formed and the Rotary club presented a president’s jewel to the Inner Wheel at their Charter Night which was held on the 3rd of April 1959. Three months later the members of the Inner Wheel did sterling service in providing tea to some two hundred and fifty visitors to the district church service at Elveden and on numerous occasions since the members of the Inner Wheel have cooperated with the members of the Rotary Club” - this is still true. Josephine Reynolds, the first woman firefighter in England, gave an interesting talk, amongst a lot of laughter on how she became a firefighter in the first place. Jo was the only girl among 40 boys who applied for the junior fire fighter course and who was then chosen with 5 boys to train. She then read a chapter from her book on how the fireservice eventually captured an escaped monkey which had arrived at Kilverstone wild life park the day before, and who had very quickly worked out how to leave her enclosure.

How The Environment Affects Skin The trouble with pollution is you can’t see or feel it, but it is more or less impossible to avoid and the effects it is having on our skin makes it equally hard to forget. We have countless environmental factors that contribute to skin damage. From spending hours a day at a computer screen to taking a stroll on a sunny day. Fortunately, there are now a host of products available to help combat these. Things such as diet, sun exposure, working in closed spaces and the daily exposure to HEV radiation (‘blue light’ emitted from computers, tablets and smartphone screens) have a strong impact. It is the particles from these hazards that can create and increase free radicals, these are the age-accelerating molecules which reduce the skin’s natural ability to act as a protective barrier. Free radicals are unstable particles, which, when they are left to their own devices, can go on to damage healthy cells. When they damage the DNA of the healthy cells, the collagen and elastin begins to breakdown which leads to premature ageing of fine lines, wrinkles, sagging skin and dullness. These tiny airborne particles have the capacity to clog pores, leaving our complexions dehydrated, fatigued and acne prone. The reason these microscopic particles have so much power over our skin is because the free radicals attack at a cellular level which causes the newly formed skin cells to deteriorate. To help combat this attack on our skin it’s a good idea to incorporate a good skincare routine, double cleansing, first to remove surface dirt and makeup and then again to penetrate pores and thoroughly clean the face. Exfoliating products are vital for removing dead skin cells and allowing the new cells to absorb any serums, soothing creams and barrier protection. Look to use products containing antioxidants such as vitamin C and E, beta carotene, bio-flavonoids, alpha lipoic acid, lactic acid and charcoal to name a few. By having professional skincare treatments together with a homecare of antioxidants and SPFs you will be guaranteed to have healthier, younger looking skin for longer. Vaccinations Key To Your Cat’s Health Vaccination is a safe and effective way to keep your cat clear from the potentially fatal threat of some infectious diseases. Under the Animal Welfare Act, owners have a legal duty of care to ensure their cat's welfare needs are met, including the need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease. Vaccines are usually developed for diseases that are debilitating or life threatening and easily spread. Cat flu is a very common virus often causing a severe and potentially life threatening illness. Cats may develop ulcers on the surface of the eyes which can lead to long term painful eye conditions. Other signs include sneezing, runny nose and eyes and a high temperature as well as loss of appetite. Ulcers can also form on the tongue, roof of the mouth or the nose, leading to dehydration and anorexia. Feline Leukaemia virus (FeLV) is a fatal disease which affects the immune system. It causes vulnerability to other infections, anaemia or tumours. Signs of the disease to look out for include recurrent respiratory infections, sore gums and digestive problems. Feline parvovirus (feline infectious enteritis) is frequently fatal. Signs include vomiting, diarrhoea and a high temperature. This progresses to a low temperature, watery diarrhoea with or without blood, dehydration or sudden death. FPV is a hardy virus, surviving in the environment for months or years. Cats are at risk through contact with other cats or the environment. The disease in cats can also be caused by infection with canine parvovirus (CPV) shed by infected dogs. FVP, cat flu and feline leukaemia vaccinations are usually combined. The primary vaccination course should be given to kittens from 9 weeks of age, with a second vaccine 3-4 weeks apart to ensure kittens and not left susceptible to infection. A booster vaccine should also be given one year later to keep immunity levels high.
Would you like a Maid to Clean your home?
lf vaccinations are not kept up to date, immunity may wane and cats will not have protection if they do become exposed. Boarding catteries have strict vaccination history requirements. Cats Protection advocates use of feline vaccination as the most effective way of controlling infectious diseases. All our cats and kittens have been vaccinated before adoption and we recommend that their new owners continue to give them regular vaccinations. Fundraising Continues At Burrell Centre Fundraising efforts have continued over the past few months in support of the Charles Burrell Centre on Staniforth Road. The former High School turned community and business centre has been working towards a fundraising target of £37,500 which is needed to unlock the full support from Power To Change, using Big Lottery funding. If the target is met, £112,500 will be provided by Power to Change to fund a range of improvements on site at the Centre. One of the creative methods being used to raise funds has been the ‘Sponsor a Chair campaign’ which has seen chairs in the main hall viewing balcony sponsored by individuals or local companies. Over 40 chairs have so far been sponsored. Sponsoring a chair is a great way to advertise your business or to remember a special teacher, in memory of a loved one whilst supporting a local community hub. For further information contact the centre on 01842 779867 or pop in at reception. The Centre has launched a special raffle for one of the ‘gold band’ balcony chairs worth £175. To be in with a chance of having your name placed on this, pop into the centre and purchase a raffle ticket for only £5. Former pupils and colleagues, led by Ron Wood, are also raising funds to sponsor a chair in memory of David O’Neale MBE (pictured, left). David, a former Charles Burrell High School teacher, passed away in March 2014 at the age of 59. He had been battling motor neurone disease for the last two years of his life. Donations can be made by visiting: www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/ in-memory-of-david-oneale

Can you help Louis?
TADDS News
Hello, my name is Louis. I’m an Arsenal fan, and my uncle Robert is a massive Spurs fan. I’m hoping to raise as much money as I can to help towards the treatment Uncle Bob urgently needs. I will be cycling 155 miles from Bob’s former home town of Thetford, Norfolk (my home town) to where he now lives in Brighton, Sussex. I will do this over two days on May 26/27th, stopping at his beloved White Hart Lane on the way.
Thetford and District Dementia Support Group (TADDS) new Helping Hands Befriending service is now accepting referral requests for a befriender to support a person living with a dementia, allowing their Carer some much needed time off.
My uncle Bob has recently been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, a crippling, degenerative, fatal condition. But miraculously we have found a doctor who is getting excellent results treating the illness. Our NHS does not provide treatment for Motor Neurone Disease but Dr Steenblock in San Clemente, California, USA does. He specialises in treating people with ‘incurable’ conditions using the latest advancement in medicine.
If you are looking after someone and just need an hour to yourself maybe to attend a Doctor’’s appointment or get some shopping, and need someone to sit with your loved one, give us a call. Befrienders can sit with your loved one, maybe play a game of cards, or do an activity, or perhaps even go for a walk. All of our befrienders are DBS checked and matched to the people they befriend. As a Carer what could you do with a spare hour a week? For further information on this FREE service, contact Jo Cooper (Befriending Co-ordinator) on 07724 175827 or email: taddsbefriending@hotmail.com Would you like to be a befriender? We are in need of more volunteers who could give an hour or two a fortnight or month. Would you like to know more? Email us on taddsbefriending@hotmail.com or contact us through our contact page on: www.thetford-dementia-support-group.org

Ask The Undertaker Each month we invite readers to submit questions to our resident undertaker - Mark Skinner. Here are some questions that have been submitted this month.
Peter – Thetford Area: “I recently attended the funeral service of a friend, he was taken to the Church on a tractor and trailer. My question is would it be possible for me to go to my funeral on a vintage truck that I have restored and would this be difficult to arrange?” Peter - The answer is of course yes, this can definitely happen, we have many requests for various modes of transport these days. We are able to organise things quite easily as we have a deck which we can secure your coffin to safely. Personally I think this is a great idea as you obviously have a keen interest in your truck. Recently we have had funerals with Lorries, Motorbike and Sidecar, a Morris Minor and even a gentleman who has pre –paid for his funeral with a tank hearse. Magda – Thetford: “I came to live in Thetford from Poland 10 years ago and now have my elderly mother living with me. Would it be difficult to have her taken back to Poland to be buried if anything should happen. This has always been her wish.”
Not your average hearse for a funeral!
Magda – nowadays this is quite easy to arrange, it is a case of preparing all the required legal documentation and notifying all of the relevant authorities. We then arrange for transportation back to the required destination. We also keep up to date on all relevant regulations within the Country we are repatriating to. If you require more detailed information and costings, please just get in touch. Contact details below.

Local Group Discusses Rights’ Issues The Thetford group of Amnesty International meets every month at the Bell Hotel lounge in town. Our next meeting is on Thursday 17th May at 6:30pm. We welcome newcomers. The last month has marked the 50th anniversary of the murder of Dr Martin Luther King. The great leader of the civil rights movement in the US, Dr King is best known for his inspiring “I have a dream” speech. However particular his cause he was a great human rights spokesman: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” He called everybody to service in the fight against injustice when he said “The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” Echoing Thomas Paine’s contemporary Edmund Burke he went further “He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.” Today, close to home, great evil is being done by our government in licensing the supply of bombs to Saudi Arabia that have been dropped on faraway schools, markets, homes and hospitals in The Yemen. The evil is done in the name of jobs, profit and influence with the Saudis. Britain supported the Arms Trade Treaty and it has become international law. It forbids the supply of arms where there is a clear risk of the arms being used to harm civilians. The British Goverment has licensed the export of £4.6bn of arms to Saudi: military aircraft, helicopters and drones, grenades, bombs and missiles. Last month, Unicef reported that thousands of children had been killed during the conflict. In January 2016, a UN panel of experts accused Saudi forces of “widespread and systematic” attacks on civilian targets. The British government has confirmed it is tracking 350 “possible” breaches of international

humanitarian law, but has yet to suspend any military licences to Saudi Arabia. Earlier this month, the UN declared the three-year war in Yemen to be the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with more than 22 million people in desperate need of aid and protection. A Saudi-led bombing campaign against Houthi rebels in the country has destroyed infrastructure including schools and hospitals. Amnesty International are a party to the legal proceedings, currently in the Court of Appeal, to stop the British government licensing the export of these arms. Rather than accepting this evil, join Amnesty International in the fight against injustice.” Simon John Thetford group Amnesty International

Air Ambulance’s Muddy Obstacle Race Proves That ‘Together We Are Brave’ East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) held their annual mud run on Sunday 25th March, and it proved more mud-filled and gruelling than ever. Around 1,650 runners took part, crawling through muddy tunnels and water pits, scrambling over straw bales and under rope netting, and being blasted by water jets as they took on the 6 or 10 mile challenge. Race goers have already managed to raise roughly £140k for the charity, and the figure is still rising. EAAA is a charity providing a life-saving helicopter emergency medical service for the people of East Anglia and as a community funded charity they rely on the kindness of public support to keep their helicopters in the sky. Their annual event, held at Elveden Estate, offered people an exhilarating way to get involved with an exciting event and raise funds at the same time. There was even a fly over by their Anglia Two helicopter – and despite their exhaustion runners were seen whooping and cheering as the crew flew by, reminding them why they were all doing it. Nick Long, Only The Brave participant 2018, said; “We got involved with this event to raise money for a fantastic cause, the work EAAA do is beyond measure and none of us know when we might need them. I am completely exhausted, covered head to toe in mud, exhilarated and shattered all at the same time, but we’ve had so much fun, the atmosphere and comradery has been incredible. Not only have we enjoyed every minute, but knowing the £1000 we have raised could help save someone’s life is amazing.” The overall 6 mile race winner was Nathan Howie and the first lady home was Ashley Barlow. The overall 10 mile race winner was once again the amazing Daniel

Rebel Queen:
a story of rebellion against Imperial Rome. Boudicca, legendary warrior queen or victim of Roman propaganda? Her very name means victory in the Iceni language. On Saturday 19 May in the unique, beautiful and atmospheric setting of Ancient House Museum of Thetford Life, right in the heart of Boudicca’s homeland, three storytellers spin the wild tale of her challenge to Rome in a dramatic and humorous show.
through the minds of the scheming Romans, explores the poetic beauty of the druidic ritual and leads us into the hearts of the battle commanders who must risk all to triumph in Iron Age Britain. There are heroic battle scenes, tender moments of motherly love and gentle beauty, and depictions of vast rugged landscapes. Although a tragic and serious story, the story tellers find plenty of opportunity to weave some humour into the show and explore some of the connections between today’s folk traditions and the ancient religion of the Britons. The show is suitable for audiences aged 14 + and is 90 minutes long with an interval. Rebel Queen will be performed on Saturday 19th May 7.30pm Advanced booking essential. Tickets are £6.00 per person or £5.00 for Friends and Norfolk Museums Pass Holders. Available from Ancient House Museum, White Hart Street, Thetford, IP24 1AD.

Norfolk Libraries have now opened their recruitment of young volunteers to help with the Summer Reading Challenge. Volunteering sessions take place between mid-July and the beginning of September, during the school holidays. We ask for a minimum commitment of two hours per week although there can be scope to do more volunteering hours, depending on the activities which are running at each library. Young volunteers are vital to supporting the Summer Reading Challenge within libraries, ensuring that children taking part are encouraged to keep their reading skills up during the holidays. Volunteers who are undertaking a Duke of Edinburgh award can use their experience towards their award. All young volunteers will receive a certificate to recognise their contribution and the library service offers young volunteers a reference for applications for work or further study. If you know of someone who would be interested in helping out this summer, contact staff at your local library or email: volunteercontact@norfolk.gov.uk to request an application pack.

Unfortunately for Landowners, obtaining Get off my land! The new Communications possession under the Code remains difficult and a strict process must be followed, Code is here. The new Electronic Communications Code was introduced on 28th December 2017 and replaces the provisions contained in the much criticised Telecommunications Act 1984, regulating telecoms operators who place and keep equipment on private land. Amongst a host of changes, the new Code removes the dual protection afforded to existing leases but, ominously for landowners, seeks to make it easier for operators to expand their networks. The old Code will continue to apply to existing leases, albeit with certain transitional provisions contained in the new Code. 30 years of dramatic growth and investment in the infrastructure that gives us all the go-anywhere digital fix so widely demanded by consumers has meant that the old Code quickly became outdated and in desperate need of modernisation. Possibly the most prominent example of this is the difficulty landowners have faced when looking to regain the land occupied by providers. In an effort to address the uncertainty created, communications leases granted after 28th December no longer benefit from security of tenure under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954 and instead enjoy security from the new Code only.
adhering to the statutory notice period of no less than 18 months and relying on the ability to establish one of the prescribed conditions. In the event that the prescribed condition is disputed the matter will be for the courts to decide. Separate to this, the landowner must follow the process for removal of the apparatus, which may also require court orders to be made . The new Code is, for obvious reasons, weighted heavily in favour of the operators. However, this must be balanced against the burden being placed upon landowners to prevent leases becoming unfeasible, and hindering the much needed network expansion that the Code attempts to achieve. If you are a landowner with an existing telecoms lease or considering the grant of a new lease, it will be important to keep this in mind and seek expert advice as soon as possible.

Thetford Business – Challenges In The Work Place Uncovering the business strengths in the town whilst working on the re-branding of the Thetford Business Forum, it became apparent the town’s industry is incredibly shy, or just too busy, to shout about the amazing career choices and diverse opportunities available to people of all ages and backgrounds.
A local business presenting to West Suffolk College students recently
Further research on career opportunities for young people (and there are plenty) showed a lack of understanding of what is out there for them; whether leaving education and looking to continue to study whilst “working on the job”, or for those finishing university and wanting to return to the town as well as university students who have come to the region and are keen to stay. Many businesses in town, including many of the members of the Thetford Business Forum, welcome young people fresh from education and leaving with different levels of qualifications. A good and positive attitude alongside good communication skills will open doors and several businesses are even offering degree level “on the job” training, to attract those with no desire to uproot to a university and the high costs associated with doing so.
them long term prospects as well as the right training and support behind their decision to support and grow with the industry in the town. One of the many areas of support, the 80 plus Thetford Business Forum community has set up is a bi-monthly HR Group meeting. Professional HR Managers from many of the large companies meet to develop strategies to help support those looking for work in the area whether it be young people, those looking for a change in career, people returning to work or someone just looking for a change.
Thetford really is a “world of opportunity”. As a business community eagerly getting on doing business, there is also a strong collaboration in town of business leaders keen to work together to get the message out. Parkrunner Of The Month - May 2018 Thetford Parkrun now boasts in excess of 3,000 registered participants and has held more than 250 events. Each month we feature somebody from our local parkrun who has an inspiring story to tell. Our Parukrunner of the month for May is Raymond Keevil. Ray was born in 1948 and started running at the age of 26. Ray joined Thetford Athletic Club in 1977 and also has run with another local running club - Brandon Fern Hoppers. Ray has completed over 100 marathons and has also completed a few ultra marathon events, which involved running up to 60 miles in a single event. Ray was an athletics coach for Thetford Athletic Club, taking a particular interest in beginners and slower runners. Ray was a spectator at the inaugural parkrun in February 2013, and made his parkrun debut from the 2nd event. Now aged 74, Ray has become the first person to complete an impressive 250 5k parkrun events with almost every one of his events completed at Thetford. Ray said he joined parkrun because he wanted to support an event that would be bringing something positive to the town.
Ray Keevil pictured with a running friend at a recent Thetford Parkrun
At the time Ray says he was not keen on the 5k catching up with him he finds running much harder than distance, preferring longer distances. Ray says he he once did but says the parkrun and fellow runners now has witnessed the benefits of the event for many help keep him going. individuals and has made many running friends. Why HIIT Workouts? Super-efficient HIIT is the ideal workout, especially if you have a busy schedule. Whether you want to squeeze in a workout during your lunch break or to get in shape for a fast-approaching event. Research shows you can achieve more progress in a mere 15 minutes of interval training (done three times a week) than the person jogging on the treadmill for an hour. And according to a 2011 study presented at the American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting, just 2 weeks of high-intensity intervals improves your aerobic capacity as much as 6 to 8 weeks of endurance training. This is something I also personally believe in. Burning Calories and FAT! Not only do you burn more calories during a HIIT workout, but the effect of all that intense exertion kicks your body's repair cycle into hyperdrive, meaning you burn more fat and calories in the 24 hours after a HIIT workout than you do after, say, a steady-pace run. Most people aren't used to pushing into the anaerobic zone (that place where you can't breathe and you feel like your heart is trying to jump out of your chest). But in this case, extreme training produces extreme results. Expect to be struggling for breath and sweating from everywhere! If you’re stuck for equipment, don’t worry - high knees, fast feet, or anything plyometric like jumping lunges work amazingly to get your heart rate up and fast!! In addition to increased fat burning and more muscle preserved, HIIT stimulates production of your human growth hormone (HGH) by up to 450% during the 24 hours after you finish your workout. This is great news since HGH is not only responsible for increased caloric burn but also slows down the aging process, making you younger both inside and out, and don’t we all want to look as well as feel younger!
