California Calling For Travis Thetford Anti Bullying campaigner Travis Sturman is getting ready for the opportunity of a lifetime this summer. 17-year old Travis previously suffered significant bullying, both physically, and mentally and emotionally online. This had a huge effect on his mental health. To counteract this Travis took up running and joined Breckland Advisory Board (YAB) when he was 13. The YAB group work with the community and local businesses to educate how bullying impacts society and the detriment it has to young people’s mental health and wellbeing. As part of YAB, Travis helped to organise and facilitate a conference to empower people to recognise bullying in places such as schools and on buses. Travis has used his running to fundraise for charity and last year he represented the UK at the World Anti Bullying Seminar held in Dublin. He also travelled to Amsterdam, visiting schools there and researched how the Dutch look after their teenagers’ mental health, as they are recognised as world leaders in this field. Passionate about the subject, Travis has been on TV and radio talking about bullying, his experience and how he overcame his challenges. At the beginning of the year Travis received a TARA award in recognition of the impact he has had locally. Now at college, Travis would like to become a Police Officer and work with young people. This summer Travis has been invited to attend the All It Takes Youth Leadership Summer Intensive in California with Breckland Youth Advisory Board.

The trip will give Travis the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences about mental health and what can be done to prevent bullying in schools, with other young people from across America. To fund this, Travis is working part time, has organised a bake sale and offered to do car washing, gardening chores and dog walking for his neighbours. Travis is also looking for sponsorship from Thetford businesses, groups or people who would like to support him. Speaking about Travis, his mother Clare said, “As his parents Adam and I are immensely proud of what Travis has done and continues to do. Having a child who is being bullied is a horrible experience that affected everyone in our family. We've worked really hard with Travis to try and find something to help him be the best he can be. We will continue to support him with all his amazing adventures.” If you would like to support Travis please Mr G's QPvisit Advert his 01.22.qxp_Layout Go Fund Me page:1 12/01/2022 09:22 https://gofund.me/d178323b

STAG (Safer Thetford Action Group) The Safer Thetford Action Group panel, or STAG for short, holds quarterly meetings that are open to the public. They were brought into being some years ago now with the aim of providing those who live and work in the Thetford area the opportunity to discuss directly with local Police and partners (such as Local Authorities, community figures and voluntary and charity organisations) concerns or issues which directly affect or impact on the day to day lives of the community or individuals. The STAG meetings are held every three months throughout the year, in January, April, July and October and are open to the public and supported by our Local Police Team and Police Engagement Officer. The STAG process offers community members and residents the opportunity to chat with your local Beat Managers about anything that may be causing an issue in your area. The Beat Managers provide updates on work that they have been doing over the previous three months and give any updates on matters such as court results for investigations that have concluded. Attendees are invited to put forward and discuss any concerns that they have in their community, after which issues raised will be voted upon, deciding the next priorities for the Policing Team.

If you can’t attend STAG meetings and would still like to raise an issue or concern with the Local Policing Team Beat Managers, please email them direct at: SNTThetford@norfolk.police.uk STAG held a meeting on Thursday 7th April, at which the following priorities were upheld: Police Priority 1 – Anti social behaviour (ASB) in the PSPO area of Thetford town centre. Police Priority 2 – Drug misuse. Police Priority 3 – Illegal off-road vehicle use and car meets at retail parks. STAG Project 1 – Community impact assessment (CIA) and reduced strength scheme. STAG Project 2 - #30 for Thetford (blanket speed restriction within town boundary). STAG Project 3 – River safety signage and safety equipment. STAG Project 4 – Town Centre wheeled ASB. The next STAG open meeting takes place on Thursday 6th July, from 7pm in the Large Court of the Guildhall. For more information, see the ‘Safer Thetford Action Group’ page on Facebook or email: stagforthetford@gmail.com

St Nicholas Hospice Care’s Girls Night Out walk returns to Bury St Edmunds on Saturday, 10th September, and walkers are being urged to sign up quick to receive a £5 discount on registration fees. Struggling To Cope With The Rising Cost Of Living? Many households have told Thetford Citizens Advice that they were already struggling to stay on top of household bills with food budgets not stretching as far anymore and now energy bills are going up too. First of all, you are not alone in this and there’s support to help you. It’s always worth checking if there are benefits you don’t know about that you’re eligible for, including support with your energy costs and living costs. On the Citizens Advice website there’s a benefits calculator, advice on how to reduce living costs and information on other ways to increase income. Thetford is fortunate to have community fridges at both the Charles Burrell Centre and Abbey Community Centre, as well as the Burrell Shop. There’s also emergency support that you may have access to, such as food bank vouchers or fuel vouchers. You could contact your local council to see if they could also offer support. If you’re struggling to stay on top of bills, it’s really important to understand what money you have coming in and going out each month. Citizens Advice has a budgeting tool on its website that can help with this.

And if you’re already behind on bills, prioritise paying your rent or mortgage, plus energy bills and Council Tax first. Not paying these bills has the most serious consequences. You should speak to the person or company you owe money to, to see if they can help you repay your bills sustainably. We know that times are incredibly tough but please remember, you don’t have to face this alone, do contact us for help finding a way forward. Citizens Advice Thetford offer free, impartial and confidential advice. You can email for advice via our website; www.cadat.org.uk or contact the Advice line on 0800 144 8848. One of the aspects of strolling which has figured largest in walking Thetford has been the effect on my mood of different places. Whatever the weather, the river will always instil a feeling of wellbeing. More pertinent perhaps, is the way buildings affect the psyche. All urban spaces are built by people for people, so perhaps this should not come as a surprise - but it was only after chatting with a friend the name of the phenomenon came to light. My pal Kate Askew (née Jackson) is a hugely talented artist and singer you might know best from her work with Sheffield-based post-punk band the Long Blondes. Chatting with her on the subject she used the term “psychogeography” to describe the phenomenon. A genuine movement originating in the 1950s, psychogeography is used to describe the interaction between individual walker and places or routes within an urban landscape. Many of us have a “happy place” but once that emotion is extrapolated it is easy to also find say, boring, lively and frightening places too. Both Kate and myself find beauty in 60s brutalist architecture – and many of her paintings are re-interpretations of icons such as the Trellick Tower and so on. Moving closer to home, Thetford’s Redcastle Furze estate is a classic piece of happy, brutalist design. I have no idea what the homes are like to live in (many houses of the era have not lasted well) but walking along Canons Walk is every bit as much my happy place as the Haling Path. The reverse would be the areas I feel lost and alone. There are too many buildings in the town that could have been built any time in the last 30 years and within any area of the country.

Kate Askew’s painting of Brooke House, Basildon

Just as they lack time and place in construction, so I lose bearings being around them. Please be clear, this is no reflection on the inhabitants of such places - such is the lack of housing, beggars cannot be choosers – with affordability and location far more important than vague and slippery notions of location. Ultimately, I’ll always revert to my happy place. Terry Land, The Flâneur

May Society Meeting

The next meeting of the Thetford Society will be on Tuesday 3rd May at the United Reformed Church at 7.30pm when Mervyn Lynford will give a talk and poetry reading entitled ‘East Anglian Miscellany’. New members are always welcome.

The Norfolk Jubilee Challenge At Charles Burrell Centre The Norfolk Challenge badge is a challenge for everyone; no matter what age or ability. There are four challenges to qualify for a badge and certificate, and the opportunity for groups or individuals to undertake all the challenges at the Charles Burrell Centre. And once completed there will be a presentation day when the badges and certificates will be handed out by someone from the Norfolk Lieutenancy. Each participant or participant group decides for themselves what level of challenge they will take on. By setting their own challenges, participants will gain self-reliance, self confidence, and a sense of achievement while celebrating the Queen’s extraordinary life long achievements. There is a website where participants can sign up and have a secure portal to put in what they plan to do. Leaders will need to do this for their groups. After each challenge you simply upload your evidence. Once all four sections had been marked as complete, you will receive an email starting the process of awarding the badge and a commemorative certificate, either digitally, by post or at a group presentation. The Challenge Badge, an enamel lapel badge incorporating the Platinum Jubilee emblem (with a hint of Norfolk) is being specially commissioned. If you compete the challenges at CBC we will sign the form to confirm what you have done.

Chance To Help Shape Norfolk Cycling And Walking Route Plans People are getting the chance throughout May to share their thoughts on where they would like to see new cycling and walking routes created across the county. Norfolk County Council is working in partnership with all district and borough councils to create a Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) for Norfolk. The Norfolk LCWIP builds on plans already completed for Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn and Greater Norwich. A survey has been launched which will allow residents of Norfolk to suggest locations for where they’d like to see new routes, as well as having their say on what would encourage people to take up more active forms of travel. For the first time in a survey such as this the council will be using innovative technology to allow people to draw lines on a digital map to show where they would like new routes to be. Matt Hayward, lead projects manager said: “The wider plan for Norfolk is still at an early stage so any feedback is crucial in helping to shape this important project. We want to know what you think will work, and what could help people to cycle and

walk more. As well as suggesting locations where cycling and walking routes could be developed. By improving the cycling and walking network within Norfolk we can help cut congestion, improve air quality and help combat climate change. Which are all in addition to the health and wellbeing benefits gained through regular exercise.” The aim is to develop a countywide walking and cycling network, and identify infrastructure improvements over the short, medium and long term. The plan will support the delivery of a low carbon, well-connected transport network. People can take part in the survey until the 30th May. To find out more and have your say visit: www.norfolk.gov.uk/activetravel

We are delighted that our afternoon talks programme is back at the museum. Our talks will be available in-person in our Tudor Hall or via live stream. On Tuesday 10th May, Dan Morgan, Secretary of the Friends Committee will tell the story of the Victorian toy theatre. The idea of a toy theatre with paper actors and scenery seems inextricably linked with Mr Benjamin Pollock, and in London today it’s possible to find both a shop and a museum bearing his name. In this talk we will explore the rich and colourful history of an ephemeral toy that began in Regency London, became a staple of Victorian childhood, was blown up in the Blitz, but even today has a small but dedicated following. Upcoming Talks • 14th June: Medieval Women – Elaine Rushin • 12th July: Life In A Roman Army – Nigel Amies • 13th Sept: Picturing The Past - Dan Morgan

This national festival celebrates the power of creativity and culture to improve our health and wellbeing. In Norfolk, you’ll find a mix of in person and online events on offer from Norfolk County Council’s libraries, adult learning, museums and record office, as well as Norfolk Music Hub and local artists and arts organisations. There are activities to suit all ages and abilities, including art and craft workshops, meditation, yoga, storytelling and singing for people living with dementia. During the pandemic many of us discovered that spending time outside and connecting with nature improved our sense of wellbeing. This year’s Creativity and Wellbeing Week encourages us to get outdoors and get creative. Look out for community walking events, history walks and trails as well as outdoor shows and experiences presented by the Norfolk and Norwich Festival. Getting Your Cat’s Diagnosis Right In cats, hypertension aka high blood pressure usually occurs as a result of another underlying disease, for example kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. It can also occur as a primary problem in itself. The organs most vulnerable to high blood pressure are the eyes, kidneys, heart and brain. There may be very few signs of high blood pressure, particularly if it is the primary problem, but sometimes the signs can occur very suddenly. Signs include blindness, changes inside the eye including bleeding, disorientation and seizures. If left untreated these signs become permanent, so seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. If the hypertension is caused by another underlying condition, the signs will relate to that disease. It is diagnosed after a thorough clinical examination. Your cat's blood pressure can be measured using a cuff device applied to the leg or tail. Repeated measurements are normally taken over a period of time, so a short stay at the vets may be necessary to stop the stress effect that will increase all cats' blood pressure.

treatment is often long term for both this and the hypertension. The most common treatment is oral drugs and it’s important that your cat's blood pressure is regularly monitored to allow any necessary adjustments to the medication, which may be needed for life. Many cats can go on to lead relatively normal lives following diagnosis and stabilisation of hypertension, but this will depend on the type and severity of any underlying disease. If left untreated signs such as blindness may be irreversible. If you have any problems giving your cat tablets, we have come up with a cunning plan! If your cat likes Webbox – the thin, long, soft cat treat, you can hide tablets inside! Just cut off a small piece and then partly cut it in half, like a bread roll, and put the tablet inside and squash the piece of Webbox back together. Most cats really like it and it makes it much less stressful for the cat than trying to give him tablets orally. For help or advice, or if you need help with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018.

If your cat has an underlying condition, this should be treated first. However, due to the potentially severe consequences of high blood pressure, it may be necessary to start medication immediately in some cases, such as hyperthyroidism. Other conditions such as kidney or heart disease,

A New Generation Of Gardeners Inspired In Thetford Pupils at a primary school in Thetford have swapped textbooks for gardening tools and litter pickers, with the help of Breckland Council and local businesses. It is part of a green project to teach young people how to grow flowers and vegetables in a sustainable and cost-effective way, whilst learning how litter affects communities. Breckland Council's officers, in partnership with local businesses Thetford Garden Centre, Wilko and Not Just Books have helped children at the Bishop's CE Primary Academy learn about the basics of gardening, highlighting how everyone can reuse waste items from home to develop a bountiful garden. Pupils also took part in a public gardening event in the Abbey Estate, planting flowers in public flowerbeds with the support of Serco staff. From milk containers, wellies and even broken buckets holding compost and seeds, council officers showed pupils how household items can be reused to help grow beautiful plants and tasty vegetables at home. Pupils will now carefully grow the plants and vegetables with a competition over the coming weeks and months.

Pupils from Bishops CE Primary School

Chris Read, Interim Headteacher at the Bishop's CE Primary Academy commented; "We are incredibly proud that our pupils, who care deeply about our environment, have taken up this green challenge with energy, enthusiasm and green fingers! This project has offered our pupils an exceptional learning experience about how to be self-sufficient, grow healthy vegetables to eat at home and help reduce waste in our community. All of the learning today, and over the coming weeks, will be now linked into our core curriculum areas”. Councillor Susan Dowling who represents Priory Ward on Breckland Council said; “I’d like to thank the children for all their efforts with this project, they did a great job giving the area a makeover. I hope they enjoyed the activities and learnt a lot in the process”.

We are Thetford's local trusted kitchen fitting service that installs every style of kitchen. Our friendly knowledgeable team are there to guide you through the process from start to finish.

Thetford Garden And Allotment Club This month feels like a transition between Spring and Summer! Night time temperatures can be very low compared to temperatures in the day so one must not be in too much of a hurry to plant out tender crops, best to wait until the end of the month when the risk of frost is less. Our Spring Show last month didn’t attract many entries but they were of a very good quality. Brian Farrell, our Chairman, entered some beautiful daffodils, tulips and primulas and was rewarded by scooping a fair number of prizes!

If the weather is dry, watering veg crops and fruit trees is important but with chilly nights it’s preferable to water mid morning when the temperatures are mild, evening watering can chill the roots. Watering can be helpful when fruit is setting. The grass is growing fast now, mow lawns weekly and trim the edges. This is the quickest way to improve the look of your garden if you have limited time available. If the weather is warm weeds start appearing, choose a warm, dry day to hoe them off, this is a job that if carried out regularly, makes a huge difference, catching the weeds while they are small. Bedding plants can be planted out later in the month and can brighten the borders or pots immediately. If you have a greenhouse it is now probably bursting at the seams! Remember to open windows and doors on warm days to allow good ventilation and air circulation which helps to prevent disease. Hang fly traps to control whitefly and thrips. This month marks the return of RHS Chelsea Flower show to the Spring after two years of the pandemic. I’m hoping to visit during the week and am looking forward to seeing the show gardens, visiting the Great Pavilion and perusing the trade stands for those ‘must have’ buys! Our meeting this month is on 26th and our speaker is Brian Butcher from the National Trust, 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church in Earls Street.

Garden Surprise For BTO’s Nick For an avid birdwatcher (or ‘birder’) like me, working at the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO) in Thetford is a real privilege. Our head office, the Nunnery, is situated in the middle of East Anglia – the most species-rich part of Britain. The Nunnery Lakes nature reserve is on our doorstep, hosting Kingfishers, Lapwings, Great Crested Grebes, Otters and much more. On top of that, there are many like-minded colleagues to share stories with, not to mention the tens of thousands of keen members of the public who take part in our volunteer surveys and tell us what they’ve seen and heard. Occasionally though, it can be frustrating to be reading about all the exciting wildlife other people are seeing on a computer screen, rather than experiencing it in person. Particularly galling are the many tales of unusual species that turn up in gardens – why couldn’t that be in my garden?!

A Black Redstart spotted in Thetford

Imagine my delight then when I opened my curtains on 13th April to see one perched on our fence: a real red (start) letter day! I guess the moral of the story is to pay attention to, and make the most of what’s on your doorstep. You never know what surprising wildlife encounter might be awaiting you when you pull back the curtains. And if you do see a Wryneck, Rose-coloured Starling or any other unfamiliar bird in the Thetford area, try to get a photo and please do let us know!

BTO’s long-running Garden BirdWatch survey, a weekly count of all the birds and other animals visiting participants’ gardens, helps us monitor wildlife in this hugely important yet often very undervalued habitat. Garden Bird Watchers Find out more about: BTO Garden BirdWatch and regularly spot oddities, especially during the how to contact us at www.bto.org/gbw spring and autumn migration periods. At these times of year we receive a steady trickle of photos Article and photo by Nick Moran of scarce birds like Wrynecks (a cryptically patterned member of the woodpecker family) and Rose-coloured Starlings (like a normal Starling but with a pink waistcoat and a fancy hair-do) in people’s gardens! Black Redstart is another such species. As few as 60 pairs breed in the UK (compared to around 5,000 pairs of Kingfisher, for example) and a few hundred individuals winter around our coast, particularly in the south and southwest. Teaming up with the Thetford Garden and Allotment Club again, the ever popular annual plant sale will be held at 28 Arlington Way. From garden favourites to veg plants, there’s always a wide variety of plants available all at a great price. If you’re setting up a brand new bed, or want to improve your garden, the knowledgeable team are more than happy to share their expertise and make suggestions. Organiser Karen-Emma White said, “It’s always exciting to see what we have on the stall each year and a great opportunity to grab a bargain and help the hospice at the same time.” If you have any plants that you would like to donate, please message the team on their Facebook page or drop round to 28 Arlington Way. Cream teas with homemade scones in Sue’s garden will also be available for £5 per person. The team have been busy organising this year’s grand draw and have some fantastic prizes up for grabs including some luxury luggage and a trip in a 1926 Hispano Suiza car with afternoon tea. Tickets are available from Everything Thetford in King Street, Charles Burrell Centre main reception, garden owners and the organising team.

Blood, Sweat And Fears, A Talk For Probus Retired Forensic Biologist Mary Newton delivered a fascinating and occasionally emotional talk recently for members of Thetford Probus, covering aspects of her career in the forensic services. Many of us feel that we have some appreciation of the way that crime investigation works from watching programmes like Silent Witness, but Mary told us that real life and TV forensics are very different. She explained that the work is often difficult and mundane, with a constant need to wear full ppe to avoid contamination of specimens. The search for, and analysis of DNA evidence is now vitally important because everyone has an individual code, except for identical twins and those where two types may be present, such as after a bone marrow transplant.

Mary Newton, second left, with Club Members Jennifer Bullock, Jill Wood and Leni Wright

murders of Stephen Lawrence in 1993, Lin and Megan Russell in 1996 and Billie Jo Jenkins in 1997, as well as the murders committed by Dennis Nilsen to 1983, all of which are clearly very much fixed in the speaker’s mind.

Thetford Probus welcomes retired business and professional people to its weekly meetings. West Norfolk Aviation Society This month, Flight Lieutenant Andy Tennant was the star attraction at the Mundford Bowls Club where he captivated members of the West Norfolk Aviation Society and, a contingent from the Norfolk Aviation Group. The attendance figures soared to new heights! Andy has modestly entitled his talk: ‘Some Flying Stuff’ and when one hears stories of rags to riches, Andy’s own draws some parallels. From a relatively humble beginning and an early interest in flight he soon became an air cadet and, with a later visit to Duxford his sights were firmly set; by sheer determination and hard work he joined the RAF without any assistance from a university education. From what was available to read in his log book it was soon clear that it might have been easier to list the aeroplane types that he hadn’t flown rather than the ones that he had. Favourite talking points were: Jet Provost, Hawk, Canberra, Jetstream, Hercules and Tucano. During his time with the RAF he was invited, with his wife, to spend some time in the US as an instructor. When he was 38 he retired and joined the world of civil aviation and spoke with affection for a number of these giant conquests, his favourite being the Jumbo 747.

Andy lives in Feltwell so it won’t be that far away for us to entice him back to talk about the ‘stuff’ he left out: perhaps a deeper appraisal of the effects of volcanic ash on airworthiness? The meeting was punctuated by a few side shows including a record raffle, the auction of a valuable aeronautical tome which went for a song but, to a worthy recipient; a charismatic barman and an equally charismatic fare stewardess. A missing sideshow unfortunately, was the ever popular Chairman-cum-comedian, Chris H, who sent his apologies for absence following a covid outbreak in his family. Next month there are plans afoot to visit Marham. How Allergies Affect Us At least 50% of us experience an allergy at some point in our life. For the majority of us they go undiagnosed even though we may have symptoms. In the United Kingdom we have one of the highest allergy rates in the world, but no one really knows why this is. We are learning new things every day so more and more information gathered will help to improve treatments to be more effective in the future. An allergy is when your immune system overreacts and treats a perfectly normal, harmless substance as a threat. This in turn can cause things like rashes, dry itchy skin and swelling. Food allergies seem to be the most common, followed by hay fever. Pollen affects about 26% of the population. Allergies happen at any time, food, hay fever and allergic asthma tend to happen early on, whereas a reaction to things like, bee and wasp stings or medicine become more common in later life. Genes seem to play a big role in developing allergies. If you have a parent with an allergy you have a 30 - 50% chance of developing one yourself. If both parents do, then it jumps to 60 - 80%!

Lots of studies suggest that bacteria in our guts play a vital role in us developing allergies. If the balance of the gut has been disturbed with antibiotics then that can affect us developing allergies in later life. So, early exposure to these bacteria at a young age may make it less likely to get hayfever or eczema if youngsters are exposed to these germs. Even babies have been seen to be less likely to get food allergies if they are in a home which has a dog. Lastly, if you see someone having a severe allergic reaction, antihistamines will not be enough to tackle it. Speed is of the essence. Find the person’s adrenaline pen and help them if needed, if symptoms don’t improve call for an ambulance.

Not Just Books We were delighted to welcome Jon McGregor to the shop last month on the last stop of his signing tour by bicycle! The Reynard Reads Book Club book for May is his mesmerizingly tender novel Lean Fall Stand and we still have signed copies available in the shop if you would like to join us discussing this on Wednesday 18th May at 7pm. May’s Fiction book of the month is Black Butterflies by Priscilla Morris. Set in Sarajevo during the spring of 1992. Each night, nationalist gangs erect barricades, splitting the diverse city into ethnic enclaves; each morning, the bemused residents - whether Muslim, Croat or Serb - push the makeshift barriers aside. Zora, an artist and teacher, is focused on her family, her students, her attic studio in the old town. But when violence finally spills over, she sees that she must send her elderly mother and ageing husband to safety with her daughter in England. Reluctant to leave her work, or to believe that hostilities will last more than a handful of weeks, she stays behind as the city falls under siege. As the siege deepens and everything they loved is laid to waste, black ashes floating over the streets, Zora and her friends are forced to rebuild themselves, over and over. Inspired by real-life accounts of the longest siege in modern warfare, only thirty years ago, Black Butterflies is a heartrending

and utterly captivating portrait of disintegration, resilience and hope and sadly provides a timely reminder that peace should not be taken for granted. The children’s book of the month for May is Cerrie Burnell’s Wilder Than Midnight. You may recognise Cerrie’s name from her time as a presenter on CBeebies where she broke down barriers, challenged stereotypes and overcame discrimination to become one of the most visible presenters on children’s TV. Wilder than Midnight is a bold and evocative adventure centred around sisterhood and the power of myths and storytelling, perfect for readers aged 9 and above. Set deep in an enchanted forest, the atmospheric story offers a fresh spin on classic fairy tales and features an empowered heroine inspired by Cerrie’s own experiences of limb difference, the book also celebrates individuality and found family. We read an advance copy of this a few months ago and were thoroughly captivated by it! Looking forward to June and the Jubilee, we’re delighted to team up with the team at Location, Location for a great competition where the winner will win 5 Children’s Books all relating to the Jubilee theme – watch out on social media for further details soon! Happy reading from the team at Not Just Books!
