Out & About Thetford

Thetford supports the Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning Anyone who knows Karen, The Assistant Editor

will know she’s quite partial to the odd piece of cake every now & again! So Karen was delighted to be invited to cover several of the Macmillan Coffee & Cake mornings around town. First stop of the week was the Abbey Neighbourhood Centre for the Great Abbey Bake Off competition where a delicious Death by Chocolate Cake won 1st prize. Speaking about the event, judge Mike Towndrow said There’s been some real effort & time put into the cakes. I’m really pleased to have been asked to be a judge today.” Fellow judge Pat Pearson followed up with “I’m really impressed by the range of cakes here. There are good examples of good old Norfolk recipes as well as modern examples like the Death by Chocolate cake. I’m also really taken by the taste of the walnut & crumble cakes we’ve tasted” The final judge Town Clerk, Tina Cunnell added “It’s so lovely to see that this community centre is being used in such a positive way. The young people here are doing an incredible job.” A few days later it was off to Baron Court for more cake at Lynne Ready’s fundraiser to support the Chemo Bus service that local residents benefit from. Local residents turned out in force to enjoy some lovely home baked cakes in the riverside garden. Finally finishing the week at the Charles Burrell Centre at the opening of brand new tenant, Nadine’s Cakes & Celebrations for a drop-in open day & the chance to find out about the glorious cakes created by Nadine. Hosts of friends, family and CBC users were popping in throughout the event, either stopping for a cup of tea or buying some of awarding winning Nadine’s cakes to take away. Speaking about the event Nadine told About Thetford “I’ve had several friends & family members use Macmillan & so for me it was obvious thing to do. It’s been amazing, there have been loads of people, it’s been really good.”

Thetford Town Boxing Club officially opens it’s doors Boxing fans from across

the town came together on October 1st to watch two very special guests officially open the new club. Barry Trainor who ran Silver Ring Boxing Club and Veronica Nimmo, who’s late husband ran the Spartan Boxing Club in town for 16 years (and original taught Barry to box) cut the ribbon to mark the opening of Thetford’s latest Sports Club. Chairman Pat Pearson thanked everyone who had helped to establish the club. An award in memory of David Nimmo has been donated by Veronica. RVS Over 50s Wellbeing Day Success

The Carnegie Room thronged to the sound of merry chatter as it filled with older members of our community recently. Supported by the RVS (Royal Voluntary Service) the second Over 50s Wellbeing Day proved to be a huge success with visitors. Sheena Tate, Community Engagement Officer said “I’ve organised this as part of the Thetford Local People’s Project, we’ve been able to collect people’s opinions on what is needed in the town and point them in the direction of some of the organisations that can help.” Not only were people able to find out information about services and groups in the area, being part of a social experience was on the agenda too. Mid morning visitors were able to enjoy morning tea, coffee & cakes followed by hot soup and bread at lunchtime, along with more cake supported by Tesco’s Community Champion Sarah Douthwaite & the team responsible for the Methodist Church Lunch Club.

Choral Harmony Performance brings choirs together Thetford Singers were joined by their friends, the Stuart Singers for a one off concert in Garboldisham Village Hall. This was the second time the choirs have performed together , and proved to be an evening not to be missed. Thetford Singers returned to some of their Zimbe! favourites, whilst the Stuart Singers delighted the audience with an outstanding Les Miserable medley. The Stuart Singers Musical Director, Helen Sims congratulated the Thetford Singers on their renditions of the difficult John Rutter pieces, which the Thetford Singers performed beautifully. Both choirs sung together a rousing version of Siyahamba from Zimbe! as a finale. An encore quickly followed accompanied by the audience clapping along — proving a fitting end to an evening of outstanding singing. The Stuart Singers are based in Gloucester and have raised over £230,000 for charity over the past 23 years. Thetford Singers is a community choir for people who love singing, established over 40 years ago. Current Musical Director Chris Parsons and Accompanist Pip Jenson have created a choir Thetford can be very proud of.

Unused Room Quickly Becomes Hub For Learning & Improving Community Relations

Community Event To Promote Tolerance

Saturday 19th November 2016, 10am - 2pm

A previously unused room at the Charles Burrell Centre has been transformed into a bright and colourful learning environment in an effort to teach new skills and improve community cohesion. The former food technology room at the front of the Centre is now home to whats been called the 'Polish Language School'.

A community event is being organised for Saturday 19th November 2016 in Thetford as part of the ‘International Day of Tolerance’. The annual event is organised by the United Nations and provides the perfect backdrop to an event first mooted by Thetford Town Council earlier this year to recognise the contributions of all nationalities in Thetford. Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations said: "On the International Day of Tolerance, let us recognize the mounting threat posed by those who strive to divide, and let us pledge to forge a path defined by dialogue, social cohesion and mutual understanding." The event will be taking place throughout King Street and around King Street Square between 10am - 2pm on Saturday 19th November. Groups are being invited to showcase what they do locally. Anyone wanting to take part or for more information can contact David Brooks from the Town Council on 07553 388554.

The space which is entirely self-funded teaches English language skills to Polish nationals and Polish lessons are available as well for anybody wanting them. For Polish children born in this country they may be missing out on learning about Polish culture and traditions so the learning opportunities include traditional Polish songs and dances. At the launch recently there were representatives from the Polish Government who flew in specifically for the evening and they expressed their pleasure at the opening of the School. Anna Depta, one of the driving forces behind the school's creation spoke at the launch about how Polish people love living in Thetford and particularly enjoy the beautiful environment, the heritage and the number of community activities that they could get involved with.

Charles Burrell Centre Manager Mark Snowdon said: “The opening of the new school is a valuable resource for local families and has already helped to enhance relations within the community. Being based at the centre allows the chance to build stronger links”. Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements

circumstances which led to the battle. His grasp of facts and figures also the people in the command hierarchy made the talk a fascinating insight into the offensive, one that resulted in the opening assault becoming the worse day for casualties in the history of the British army. In the end not much territory was gained, but while the allies suffered very heavy casualties, the Germans lost almost as many and did not inflict anything like the number their excellent positions should have allowed.

Probus Club’s AGM held in October, saw the post of Chairman being taken by Gerald Goucher as Mike Brindle stepped down after his two-year term. Nigel King becomes Vice Chair, while a number of other committee members have retired including Secretary Les Howard, replaced by Tom Grove and Treasurer Roger Healey who is succeeded by Tony Boutle.

Is Rotary for You? Rotary brings together people from all walks of life. People who want to use their expertise for good. People whose sense of responsibility inspires them to give back to their communities. Rotary is also enjoyable. Clubs meet regularly and arrange social events and activities. Long term friendships are made with people who share common values whilst having a good time. If you enjoy helping others, Rotary gives you the chance to do something really worthwhile. Rotary is committed to ensuring your efforts in helping local, national and overseas communities are well organised, productive and rewarding. Whether you are 18 to retired, male or female, the Rotary Club of Thetford offers you opportunities and friendship and would welcome enquiries for membership.

Members showed there appreciation for the work done by all those retiring. Dealing with the club’s finances, the Treasurer reported that expenditure had been less than usual and that reserves had grown, so it was recommended that the annual membership subscription stayed at £25. It was acknowledged that the club needs new members especially younger ones to help reduce the average age of the membership. With official business concluded, Tom Grove, who happens to be the club’s newest member, gave a talk on the Battle of the Somme which took place 100 years ago. Common Sense Club Talk The 2016 event of Thetford’s Common Sense Club will take place on Friday 11th November in Old School at Thetford Grammar School at 7.30pm. Author and travel writer Fraser Harrison will talk about “The Man from Thetford – the story of the Thomas Paine Statue”. Harrison will describe how the statue came to be commissioned, and how Thetford reacted to the idea of commemorating its most famous son. Harrison will also talk about the way the statue’s sculptor, Sir Charles Wheeler, interpreted Paine, and will point to other portraits and statues that may have influenced him. Finally, he will assess the changes in Paine’s local reputation since the statue was erected in 1964.

Photo above: Thetford Mayor Richard Easten admiring the new statue with the statue’s funder Joseph Lewis in 1964. Photo below: Statue ready to be unveiled in 1964.

Stuart Wright, Chairman of the Common Sense Club and organiser of the evening, said, “It is a great opportunity to learn a little more of how Thetford’s Thomas Paine Statue came into being; the man behind the project and the influences of the sculptor he chose, as well as touching upon the controversy it ignited. We are grateful to Thetford Grammar School for allowing the event to take place in the very room where Thomas Paine was schooled over two and half centuries ago”. All welcome; entrance free.

Women’s Institute

Thetford Freemasons Local Charity Donations

As we near the end of the year, we’re reflecting on the interesting meetings and events that have taken place. Most memorable was our 70th Birthday celebrations in June when we were delighted to welcome our Mayor Councillor Terry Jermy with his Consort Corinne Fulford. They came to our Bar-B-Q and Race Night at Croxton Village Hall and after cutting the cake enjoyed some Horse-racing. A hugely enjoyable evening. In July we welcomed Barbara Miller who gave us an in depth talk about the life and times of Edith Cavell. On a lighter note, we invited the Blood Bikers to tell us about the voluntary work they do transporting bloods etc. around the region. With three bikers and their BMW in the hall, some ladies were close to palpitations! A team of our ladies did the refreshments for the successful Mayor’s Charity Disco recently, and a group of ladies regularly volunteer their help at the Elders Lunch Club. We also continue to knit hats, jackets and blankets for the Neo Natal Unit at West Suffolk Hospital. Our Lunch Club thrives as does our Book Club. We’re always happy to welcome new members, for more info about Thetford W.I you can call the President, Rose Peterson on 01842 754273.

Representatives from 'Breckland Masonic Lodge' (Thetford) donated the profit from their Summer BBQ to local charities to include: £150 to SERV Norfolk (The Volunteer Motor Cyclists Blood Service). £150 to the 'Silverthreads Club' (Over 60’s - young at heart) Thetford £150 to the 'Lazy Bird' Club (Severely Mobility Impaired,) Methwold A further £200.00 will also be donated to local causes.

Thetford Society

Christmas with Thetford Voices

The September meeting started with a round up of the latest issues concerning Thetford which we are involved with, in particular the concerns over the future HGV traffic which is to be routed through Thetford instead of East Harling. Guest speaker Vince Thurkettle gave a talk on his many years as a gold prospector. With all his spare time spent panning for gold he developed an understanding of where gold should be found, but in Vince’s own words he did it for the enjoyment and certainly wasn’t getting rich quick! A suggestion that he might like to try diving ship wrecks for gold saw him quit his job to spend months at a time diving on the wreck of the Royal Charter which sank during a hurricane off the coast of Anglesey in 1859. In 2012 he found Britain’s largest gold nuggetweighing 3.4 ounces, still only half the size of a small hens egg. The nugget is now in the hands of the Receiver of Wrecks, whilst Vince’s wealth remains in his fascinating adventures and stories.

Thetford Voices is once again inviting young singers from across the region to join them for a Christmas Carolling holiday workshop on the 22nd December.

The Society’s next meeting will be 7.30pm on Tuesday 1st November, United Reformed Church on Earls Street. “What we found under the stairs” by Ian Riches from the National Trust of Scotland. New members are always welcome.

The singers aged from 6 to16 years meet at 11.15am in St Peter’s Church, White Hart Street, Thetford to rehearse familiar and less well-known carols and Christmas songs with our band before an afternoon singing in residential homes across Thetford and collecting for EACH and the children at Quidenham Hospice. The day ends back in St Peter’s Church with guests joining us in a three quarter hour concert at 6.30pm for families, friends and members of the public. There is no charge for the day, made possible through the support of the Pearson Family Fund and Coach Services of Thetford who have generously provided our transport for the last nine years. Carolling Day is always a special day for audiences and performers alike, exuberantly celebrating the Christmas spirit. All enthusiastic singers are welcome; do come along. Application Forms and full details can be can be obtained from Music coordinators in many local schools, through e-mailing: thetfordvoices@gmail.com or by telephoning John Weeks on 01842 820060

Life Is For Living

Thetford & District Dementia Support

“If it’s fun, it does not feel like exercise.” That is the thinking behind the newly established class, “Life is for Living: Older Adults' Exercise”. Every Friday at 1.30pm a group of mature adults meet in the ‘Terrapin’ behind Fulmerston Church (IP24 3LE) for an hour-long session of both standing and chair-based exercises under the guidance of an expert leader.

The group were delighted to support another charity close to its heart, when it passed over the war memorial commissioned art to Royal British legion Thetford Club, as the new custodians. It is hoped the artwork, completed by local Thetford artist Bethany Russell, will be used by the Club to help raise much needed funds, and will be on display at Thetford British Legion.

The emphasis is very much on creating a friendly and encouraging atmosphere. For those who want to be more active and to increase their mobility, co-ordination and muscle strength, this class ticks all the boxes. New members can come along at any time - the classes run until 9th December and then restart on January 13th 2017. Judith, one of the members, says “ Such a lovely relaxed and friendly class” and Linda agrees that it provides “Excellent motivation” while others appreciate the choice of music. There is no need for any special clothing - just come prepared to have a good time and to go away feeling pleased that you made the effort. There is a charge of £3 per session. Afterwards there is always an opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea/coffee, a biscuit and a chat. For more details please contact June 07771637821.

Thetford British Legion Club is considering a named poppy dedication to be attached to its own memorial for the upcoming rememberance day and encourage anyone who may be interested in having a poppy dedicated for £1 to call in to the local club. Thetford & District Dementia Support Group were delighted to hear it put to such a good cause. TADDS meet on Fridays at Cloverfields Church.

Fancy Learning a New Language? Je m'appelle Monique, j'habite à Paris. Me llamo Carmen, vivo en Madrid. Mein Name ist Hans, ich wohne in Berlin. Can you translate? French, Spanish and German are the three languages offered by Thetford University of the Third Age. If you are a complete beginner, do not think that being retired or semi-retired, is a barrier to learning another language. If you learnt one of these languages at school, you will be surprised how quickly it comes back to you! So whether you are a complete beginner or can hold a conversation, you will be welcome in these groups led by members who speak fluently the language. You will learn in a relaxed, non-competitive atmosphere and in the process you will meet new people and make friends. If you know another language and are keen to pass on your knowledge or have always fancied learning Italian for example and are not afraid to start from scratch with the help of audio and visual aids with like-minded people, this is possible too. Thetford U3A has two group coordinators who will be happy to help you start a group. And if you fancy learning the three languages together, think of all the countries you can visit and astonish the natives with

your language skills: Tahiti, Guadeloupe, Seychelles, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mali, Cameroon, Belgium, Switzerland, Monaco, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Cuba, Germany, Austria...... But if languages are not for you, Thetford U3A has over 40 interest groups to choose from. For more information visit our website at www.thetfordu3a.org or come to our next monthly talk on Thursday 24th November where you will be entertained by a surprise speaker. Free to members, but non-members are welcome for a £2 donation, which is refundable if you join on the day. We look forward to seeing you. Open Mon-Fri 9am-4pm

At the October meeting of Inner Wheel, Keith Eldred gave a talk entitled 'Semi detached to a Scheduled Monument' which was about how he was born in London, lived his childhood in a semi-detached house in London, and ended up owning the old store for nuclear weapons on the Gorse Industrial Estate, Thetford.

MADE TO MEASURE Curtains • Blinds Roman Blinds

His talk was both amusing and interesting. He saw London Docks burning during the war. Later he studied as a Chartered Surveyor which has stood him in good stead in later life, and went on to do National Service as a wireless mechanic where he also continued his love of football which he had played at school. After National Service, he went to Hong Kong to work and there met his wife, returning to England when his first child was on the way, and ended up by buying a house in Thetford by pure chance. Keith then bought the nuclear storage site - which is now the Gorse Industrial Estate, at auction for a substantially reduced price. He ran a very successful mushroom growing business until a virus wiped them out, and since then, the old Government building which originally belonged to the Guinness family, has, with the help of English Heritage been made into a Scheduled Monument around which tours are taken.

Beauty Geek Column: Oil Pulling - “The Facts” What is “Oil Pulling?” Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice to improve primarily oral health but also, the overall health of your body. It can be done using coconut oil or any other healthy pure oils. What does it do? The action of swishing oils around the mouth gets rid of oil-soluble toxins in the body and mouth. How do I do oil pulling? Place 1tbsp of oil into your mouth before eating or drinking, ideally on an empty stomach. If using the solid coconut oil, melt first or preferably use fractionated coconut oil which is in liquid form already. Swish it around your mouth for around 15 minutes. To start with it will make your mouth ache due to the swishing action. So start off at 5 minutes and build up to the 15 minutes. Do not swallow the oil. After swishing dispose of into the bin NOT the sink as it becomes toxic from all the bacteria it has drawn off. Then rinse your mouth out with water 2-3 times. Brush your teeth as usual. What are the benefits? Mouth benefits include: Prevents bad breath, Removes bacteria from the mouth, Holistic remedy for bleeding gums, Whitens the teeth, Prevents plaque, gum disease and cavities.

Let Your Hands Do The Talking!

Halcyon Days

It is often said that our hands show our real age! This can not however be the case for everyone as treatments are now available to reverse the signs of skin ageing. Many people try lotion and creams to brighten their hands but this can be slow to show results as our hands are in constant use and it’s hard to keep creams on when every time you wash your hands the cream comes off! The reason our hands tend to show more signs of ageing is because we expose them to all weathers and the sun / ultra violet light is the number one cause. Today Age spots, and pigmentation can be treated very successfully in as little as 1-3 treatments using Intense Pulse Light (IPL for short). The energy from the light is attracted to the pigment in the skin, this causes it to heat up and turn darker immediately after treatment. A few days later, the dark patches will shed from the hands and the new skin will be brighter. This treatment is known as skin rejuvenation and can be used for many things such as sun damage, age spots, freckles, enlarged pores and acne. It is suitable for use on the body and face. Several clients like to have it as a facial treatment, as the skin will be tightened and firmer with the production of collagen and elastin. As with all IPL treatments a consultation, including medical history and patch test must be carried out prior to any treatments.

Runners Represent Thetford in France Regular Thetford Parkrunners, Lisa Perkins and Graham Williams woke up on Sunday October 23rd, pulled on their running tops and became ‘Team Thetford’ for the day and competed in a 10km run in Les Ulis, France. The pair were invited to take part by Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Terry Jermy after an invitation was extended by French officials. Lisa started her first Parkrun in July 2014, having been signed up for a race by a friend and deciding that she needed to embark on some training. With the help of regular running and attending Slimming World classes, Lisa has since lost 5 stone in weight. Graham started his running journey by walking his first Parkrun in February 2014. Just like Lisa, Graham has not only got much fitter but has also lost an incredible 9 stone in weight. Between them, Graham and Lisa have now completed 25 marathons across the country and the Les Ulis 10km run was the first time they had competed abroad - an exciting experience for both.

Janet Smith-Gibbons, Chairman of the Twinning Association said: “Thetford Twinning Association were pleased to support Lisa and Graham on their visit to Les Ulis. The Twinning Association’s objectives are promoting links with Thetford’s twin towns of Les Ulis (France), Hurth (Germany), Spijkenisse (The Netherlands) and Skawina (Poland) through social and cultural visits and exchanges by individuals and groups. This month our Association is also helping with the costs of Thetford Dolphins trip to Hurth, our twin town in Germany for the annual Links Swimming Gala between the Dolphins and teams from Hurth and Spijkinesse in the Netherlands”.

Speaking about his choice of runners, Editor Terry Jermy said “I’m delighted that Lisa and Graham were able to represent Thetford. Not only has the magazine sponsored the core of the cost, but local residents, members of the Thetford Town Twinning Association and Thetford Labour Party who also chipped in to help.

Thanks are extended to staff at School Lane Surgery who processed in quick time the medical certificates that were required for Lisa and Graham to participate. Find out more about the Twinning Association by visiting: www.thetfordtwinning.org.uk

Michelin Nod for Thetford’s Mulberry The owner’s of Thetford’s Mulberry Restaurant are jubilant after being listed in the prestigious Michelin Guide 2017. After building their business over the past six years, the resturant has gone from strength to strength and is seen as a great place in town for a special meal. Speaking about the experience last Spring Karen Connor said “We didn’t know anyone was coming, the Michelin isn’t something that you ask to be in or you know about, it’s completely on their recommendations and their experience when they come. It was a gentleman that ate on his own, I didn’t know who he was until after he’d eaten and paid. Once he’d done this, he announced who he was and gave me a letter. He also told me that someone else would have to come and verify what I’ve said.” The diner then told Karen how much he had enjoyed his meal and that everything was great.

Karen Connor with son Nathan in The Mulberry

Karen sees The Mulberry as a family business, alongside herself and chef Mark and son Nathan, her two longest staff members Nathan and Josh have been able to continue their professional development and are integral to the resturant’s success “Nathan was with us when he was doing his degree at Norwich, and now he’s second chef. He now has experience that will hold him in good stead moving forwards. Nathan now creates his own dessert menu with input from Mark. Josh joined us when he was doing a Btec in hospitality and he’s gone on from that. Now he could potentially go on to manage his own restaurant, he’s definitely qualified to do that now. In five years time, I’d like to see my Nathan doing something here, perhaps taking over from me, that would be nice! He’s definitely not interested in the kitchen side, but it would be great to see him working with us.”

Until the day the listing results were published, The Mulberry team had no idea that they’d been successful. Karen said: “Whether they came and just didn’t say, we don’t know. On the day all the stars were announced we had a look on the website and there we were!” Karen explained that for The Mulberry, this is the highest accolade they could receive. To work towards gaining a star, she explained “There’s a lot of different criteria to fulfil, a big checklist of things that you can aim towards if that's what you want. With what we do and how we do it, this is where we are. There are a lot of old fashioned rules about serving from the left and clearing from the right. Both on the service and food side, there’s a lot of things that you have to be able to tick the boxes for. Michelin is the one that alongside the Good Food Guide you cannot pay for. We think Michelin may have picked up on us because of our previous entry in the Good Food Guide.”

Fundraising Efforts In Memory of Grandad March next year will mark 10 years since Jodie McGill’s grandad Tom passed away. To mark this occasion Jodie wanted to do something in his memory and also to thank St Nicholas Hospice for the wonderful care they gave him and support they gave the family. Jodie has set herself the challenge of raising £10k in 10 months. From the outset she was very conscious that people are always being asked to sponsor and donate to all sorts of worthwhile causes so she wanted to take a slightly different approach by organising a number of events and activities that people could pay to take part in. That way people are getting something from their donation and she hopes to be able to encourage them to take part and potentially become more physically active. Jodie said: “I have been overwhelmed with everyone’s generosity and involvement. The current total is £7,102 and we’re only 4 months in which is amazing!”

So excited to say we have launched our new website! www.thecorestudiothetford.co.uk. On the website you will see our beautiful studio, read all about the classes, hear what our members have to say, meet the team and find out what membership is right for you. The Core Studio is a specialist Pilates & Fitness Yoga based studio, we offer personal training, rehabilitation from surgery, stretch and well-being classes through to intense calorie crunching plus KSFL nutritional support. MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS 10% discount off personal training, specialist programmes, clothing &

Activities so far have included: Bootcamp Beauties – every Thursday a fun fitness session run by Jodie for ladies who may never have done any exercise before. A charity bowls tournament – Thetford Bowls Club Vs an amateur team of friends and family. A 10K run around Thetford stopping at every pub with charity buckets The Thetford Games – A 5a’side and rounders game Bingo with cake sale and a darts tournament.

Volunteers Crucial Part of Growing Team at Centre Regular visitors to the Charles Burrell Centre may have noticed a very busy lady working on the gardens most days. Michelle has been a garden volunteer at the centre since August and has fully embraced life at CBC. Talking about her volunteering experience Michelle said “I feel that gardening gives me the scope to move forward because it’s very therapeutic, whether it’s a hobby or at work. I meet a lot of people through gardening and it’s a good conversation starter.” Originally Michelle trained under Lambeth Council and the GLC Parks Department. Her love of gardening comes from her Grandfather, an excellent gardener, who inspired the young Michelle to get involved from an early age with jobs such as weeding before moving onto growing plants. Michelle loves to create new beds, filling them with colour and bringing interest to the eye. Amongst her favourite plants are roses, ivy pelargoniums (or germaniums to the rest of us) and iris germanica. Michelle’s gardening heroes include Percy Thrower and Alan Titchmarsh and she’s been a fan of Gardener’s World for many years. Although she enjoys Monty Don as the current presenter she says you can’t beat Alan Titchmarsh for his charisma!

Can you help? If you would like to support Michelle’s voluntary work by either sponsoring a bed or donating plants please contact Manager, Mark Snowdon on 01842 779867 or email: mark@charlesburrellcentre.org.uk Michelle is part of a growing volunteer team at Charles Burrell Centre that support a number of tasks. Michelle continued “I love colour and natural planting, especially planning colour schemes to enhance the plants. At the moment I want to improve the soil of the new beds I’ve created to make them more water retentive. I’d like to add some hellebores in some of our shady beds to bring in some colour and introduce some hydrangeas”

compost on an industrial scale so there is an alternative to burning those prunings.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club

Winter digging is the order of the day at the allotment or vegetable patch. Any organic material can be added or left on top to weather. Not only does an area freshly dug and clear of weeds look handsome but the land is ready for action in March when everything will be happening at once.

Gardening Notes for November Daylight is diminishing and the weather is getting more miserable but there are still plenty of jobs to be done in the garden before the onset of really wintry weather. A thorough clearance of dead material especially leaves will mean fewer pests and diseases surviving the frosts. The leaves and other untidy material can be composted so that you have some good stuff to add to the soil with your spring planting (and it’s FREE). If you have more tender plants, these need some care now. Ideally move tubs into the greenhouse or to a more sheltered place in the garden. The roots of plants in tubs are particularly exposed to freezing conditions so if you cannot move them consider how you can protect them – perhaps with bubble-wrap in spite of its unattractive appearance. If you have an outside tap, it is worth checking that it is protected for the winter too. Before putting overwintering plants in the greenhouse, give it a good clear out and clean it with disinfectant. As well as protecting plants this is the perfect place for pests and diseases to overwinter. Mentioning overwintering reminds me that I found a hibernating hedgehog when I started to shift the location of my compost bin at the allotment. It was nicely tucked into a corner packed with dried leaves – this isn’t a perfect composting system which is one of the reasons I like to turn the material in spring and autumn. I moved the hog to the new site and set up a dry corner hoping it will survive to eat lots of slugs next year – I can guarantee a good supply. Please also think about hedgehogs if you are planning a bonfire. If possible stack the material in one place and build the fire nearby on the day you plan to light it. Your human neighbours will appreciate a swift, relatively smokeless fire which you will get from using dry material which gives a hot fire.Damp or green material will smoulder for hours and can be very annoying to anyone nearby with open windows or washing on the line – or just working outside. The recycling centre will take as much garden waste as you like and

Finally pruning apple and pear trees and gooseberries to an open goblet shape will set them up for a healthy crop next year. Grease-bands can be fixed to the trunk to prevent winter moth damage. The fight goes on! Two notices for club members this month, Firstly it was decided at the Annual General Meeting to move our Winter social to January. However there are plans to make the January meeting the occasion for a meal and jollity – further details next month! Secondly, the November evening meeting will be on the subject of Christmas decorations using plants with Louise Bond as our speaker. This may give you ideas for gifts as well as decorating your own home. Non members welcome at 7.30pm on 24th November at the United Reformed Church. Sue Pilgrim

RSPB Supporter Rewarded By Showy Rare Bird Chatting to Thetford resident Steve Wells about the work of the RSPB in the Brecks, I immediately noticed an enthusiasm for the natural world. Having explained that one of the many benefits of RSPB membership is free access to our reserves, Steve joined the ever growing ranks of people that become supporters of the RSPB. I sometimes joke that new RSPB members see more unusual birds and wildlife and that the birds know who’s helping them. Little did I know how much this joke might backfire and how jealous I’d soon be. Taking advantage of his new membership, Steve visited the RSPB reserve at Lakenheath Fen near Brandon, a wonderful wetland area that was once carrot fields. In September, a migrating osprey had stopped off at the reserve on its southbound journey to West Africa and the bird had obviously heard that a new RSPB recruit was on site. The photos of this magnificent bird of prey that Steve showed me the next week speak for themselves! I know who I’ll be tagging along behind if I see Steve at one of our nature reserves! RSPB Lakenheath Fen is well worth a visit with very good chances of seeing the resident bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers. If you’re lucky, you might also be rewarded with views of otters and water voles. Winter is a great time to visit the reserve to see birds of prey including ghostly, beautifulbarn owls. For more information visit rspb.org.uk/lakenheathfen If you’re interested in helping the RSPB to “give nature a home” why not consider membership as a Christmas gift? We’ve introduced a variable membership rate and there are options for families, children and individuals/ couples. Members receive regular magazines and a membership pack including a gift book. That will give you plenty of time over Christmas to gen up on your garden bird identification in preparation for the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch at the end of January. Tax Clinic, by Colin Chamberlain Beware bogus HMRC emails

I am afraid that over the course of the last few years there has been an ever increasing number of fraudsters using emails that purport to be from HM Revenue and Customs. These emails often try to fool you into believing that you are entitled to a tax refund, encouraging you to click a link, leading you to a form where you can claim the refund. The form will usually then request bank account details and other personal information, which will then be in the hands of the fraudsters. Another common scam is for an email to be sent claiming that you have incurred a penalty and that you need to give personal information in order to have the penalty overturned. How to tell if an email is fraudulent If you do have an email from HMRC, treat it with suspicion. Often the spoof emails contain spelling mistakes and poor grammar. There are also a number of other things you can look out for to help you recognise a bogus email. Incorrect ‘from’ address Look out for a sender’s email address that is similar to, but not the same as HMRC’s. Fraudsters often have email accounts with HMRC or with revenue names in them (such as ‘refunds@hmrc.org.uk’). These email addresses are used to mislead you. If you are not 100% sure that the email has come from HMRC, do not open it. If you do open the email but have some doubts, do not click on any links or downloads. Personal information Emails from HMRC will never; (a) notify you of a tax rebate; (b) offer you a repayment; (c) ask you to disclose personal information such as your full address, postcode, tax reference or details of your bank account; (d) give a non-HMRC personal email address to send a response to; (e) ask for financial

information such as specific figures or tax computations, unless you have given them prior consent and you have formally accepted the risk; (f) have attachments, unless you have given prior consent and you have formally accepted the risks; (g) provide a link to a secure login page or a form asking for information. Urgent action required Be wary of emails containing phrases like ‘you only have 3 days to reply’ or ‘urgent action required’. Bogus websites Fraudsters often include links to web pages that look like the homepage of the HMRC website. This is to trick you into disclosing personal/confidential information. Just because the page may look genuine, it does not mean it is. Bogus webpages often contain links to banks/building societies or display fields and boxes requesting your personal information such as passwords, credit card or bank account details. You should be aware that fraudsters also sometimes include genuine links to HMRC web pages in their emails. This is to try and make emails appear genuine. Common greeting It is often the case that fraudsters will send high volumes of phishing emails (a form of fraud in which the attacker tries to learn information masquerading as someone else) in one go. But even though they may have your email address, they seldom have your name. Be cautious of emails sent with a generic greeting such as ‘Dear Customer’. Emails from HMRC will: (a) Usually use the name you provided to them; (b) Always include information on how to report phishing emails to HMRC. Attachments Be cautious of attachments as these could contain viruses designed to steal your personal information. I know of many people who have been targeted by the fraudsters and it is easy for the unwary to fall victim to these scams. So please be vigilant. If you would like to talk to me about this subject or any other issue relating to UK taxation please feel free to contact me on 01842 755032 or c.chamberlain@lovewell-blake.co.uk Disclaimer: Please note that this article is provided for your information only. Collective Enfranchisement Provided that at least 50% of the flats in the building who are qualifying tenants participate and the building qualifies, the landlord is unable to refuse to sell the freehold. A number of leaseholders are growing increasingly dissatisfied with their management company for either excessively charging or taking too long to address their problems. In many cases the benefits of purchasing the freehold strongly outweigh the initial cost and additional responsibility for leaseholders. It gives the leaseholders control of their building – they can decide what work needs to be done and who is best value for money to carry it out. In addition to this in many cases it will increase the value and saleability of their property. The person named in the initial notice who will acquire the property from the landlord is known as the “nominee purchaser”. The most common practice is to set up a company that is registered at Companies House which is wholly owned by the participating tenants. The nominee purchaser will be responsible for the management of the building upon completion.

Luke Stockings at Rudlings Wakelam explains how you can buy your freehold.

B

ury St. Edmunds has seen a steady rise in the price of leasehold flats in the last 12 months. Property prices increased 9.26% in the ten months between September 2015 and July 2016, and the Brexit result, although a surprise to many, has shown little sign of slowing the growth of the leasehold property market in Suffolk. This has led to a number of leaseholders considering extending their lease or purchasing the freehold interest jointly with other leaseholders within their building.

Correct notices need to be served at the right time and information provided by the leaseholders to the freeholder within strict deadlines. Once the initial notice has been served the procedure is running and failure to respond within the deadline will risk the application being rejected as invalid. It is very important to ensure that if the nominee purchaser is to be a company, the company has been set up prior to submitting the initial notice.

A lease is a deteriorating asset - with every year that passes the value is reduced. By extending the lease or purchasing the freehold a leaseholder is protecting their biggest asset from being devalued over time.

The role of the solicitor includes the preparation of information for the action, setting up a company to be the nominee purchaser (if the chosen method), serving the initial notice, responding to the landlord’s request for substantiation of claim, providing evidence of title and amending the terms of the leases after enfranchisement.

Some leaseholders have the right, subject to qualification, to join together and buy the freehold and any head-lease of their building. This right is granted by law under the Leasehold Reform and Urban Development Act 1993 (as amended) and this Act outlines the complicated process and time restrictions governing “collective enfranchisement”.

To check the eligibility of the property, the lease and the leaseholder, to discuss the potential advantages of purchasing the freehold and to receive friendly and helpful advice in relation to this, please contact Luke Stockings on 01284 755771 or via luke.stockings@rudlings-wakelam.co.uk

In order to qualify for collective enfranchisement the property must contain at least two flats and at least two thirds of the flats must be owned by qualifying tenants (a leaseholder who has a lease that was initially granted for a term of more than 21 years).

Boston Success for Thetford Dolphins

Charter Standard for Thetford Bulldogs

Thetford Dolphins Senior squad made the long trip to Boston for the Anglian League Final and despite the strong opposition they did themselves and the club proud by finishing 5th place. Alice Fasey swam way above her age limit in the 15 years and under 100m breast and by not only winning her race she broke the 12 year club record with a time of 1.24.91. The following Dolphins achieved personal bests: Alfie King 100m IM, Daniel Clark 100m fly, Benjamin Flood 100m back, Maisie Francis 100m back & 100m breast, Amie Copp 50m free, Benjamin Trowell 100m IM and Alex Darton 50m fly, 50m free & 50m breast. Well done to all swimmers. Photo below shows Boston competitors.

Thetford Bulldogs Football Club was established 21 years ago. Initially it was based at various venues until the Club out-grew them all and eventually set roots at the Sports Centre. As the Club continued to grow, and became a Charter Standard Club, the facilities became stretched again so they moved to Euston Playing Fields. After a lot of hard work from everybody involved with the club, in 2013 they achieved the Charter Standard Development status and have continued to deliver a club that involves 30 coaches and over 200 children ranging from the training school to under 18's. In 2015 the Club moved training ground to the Charles Burrell Centre which was a bit of a disruption initially but in the end it was a great decision. Bulldogs FC will be working together and aiming to achieve the FA Community Charter Standard as well.

Success in Wisbech as well... Thetford Dolphins also travelled to Wisbech for the Senior Fenland League ‘A’ Final and an outstanding Pictured above: on Friday 14th October, Thetford display saw them finish 2nd place behind a very strong Bulldogs FC was awarded the FA Charter Standard West Norfolk. 3 New Club records were set by Kacie Development Club of the year award which is a fabulous Cooper finishing 1st place in the 50m breast for the achievement. CATS AND TOXOPLASMOSIS - THE FACTS

Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by a microscopic parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. As it is a disease that can affect unborn babies, many pregnant women are understandably concerned. Recent studies have shown that contrary to some beliefs, whilst cats are involved in part of the parasite’s life cycle, human contact with cats does not increase the risk of infection. For most people, cases of toxoplasmosis occur as a result of eating raw or undercooked contaminated meat, such as beef, pork or lamb. Fresh meat is more of a risk than frozen. Eating unpasteurised goat’s milk and cheese cured, uncooked meats such as salami and Parma ham, and may also be a source of infection. It is estimated that only between 0.2 and 1.5 per cent of women become infected while pregnant and congenital toxoplasmosis when the baby is born infected - is very rare occurring in one in 100,000 babies born in the U.K.

Cats make wonderful companions to young children, helping them to develop important social skills - so please don’t forget about your cat if you are having a baby - puss is part of the family too.
