Local Youth Groups Share £5,698 From Mayor’s Charity Fund

Several groups will be using the money towards special trips. The Police Cadets are raising money for an outdoor pursuit trip to the Peak District next year. “The Cadets will be experiencing a range of outdoor activities designed to teach them team building skills, resilience and also experience a different environment. This is particularly important when it comes to these hardto-reach young people that we work with” explained Inspector Paul Wheatley.

Eighteen local groups and organisations who support children and young people in Thetford have benefitted from a share of the Mayor’s Charity fund - raised during the 2016/17 Mayoral Year. Just short of £6,000 was raised for charity during the year thanks to a range of fundraising activities including the annual Mayor’s Ball, Curry Night, 80’s disco and Christmas Quiz. Over £1,000 was distributed prior to Christmas 2016 but the majority of the money was shared between groups attending a cheque presentation during October. The money will be spent on a wide range of projects and equipment. From funding youth volunteer schemes to a research trip to London, all the groups had something that was vital to continue their work on their wish list.

Thetford Dolphins will experience swimming in an Olympic pool when they have a special coaching session at the Olympic Park in London shortly before Christmas. The groups receiving a share of the funding were: Thetford Foodbank, Thetford Music Project, Thetford Community Association, Thetford and District Girlguiding, Benjamin Foundation, EPIC, Polish Language School, Thetford Toy Library, Charles Burrell Centre, Fulmerston Family Project, Thetford Dolphins, Thetford Town Football Club, Thetford Cricket Club, Bulldogs Football Club, Face 2 Face Educational Trust, Thetford Police Cadets, Teenage History Club and Third Thetford Scouts.

Councillor Terry Jermy, Mayor of Thetford during this period said: “There are so many groups providing services and support to children in Thetford. Singling out one or two groups to be beneficiaries would be difficult. This way as many groups as possible are receiving a share to help them carry on their good work and I know that a little can go a long way”.

Speaking at the event, Terry said: “I would like to thank everyone who attended and supported the events and raised the money we have awarded today. Particular thanks to my Consort for the year Corinne Fulford. I would also like to thank all the businesses that supplied raffle prizes or financially supported the events, there are too many to list here, but thank you everyone.” Karen-Emma White

One of the recipients, The Benjamin Foundation, said, “We are very grateful for this donation. We will be purchasing some new sports equipment. It is so nice to have our work recognised and appreciated. Our young people enjoyed their trip to King’s House today”.

Out and About Thetford

Euston Hall Wows The Crowds After some

extensive restorations Euston Hall opened its doors to visitors this year and has proven a huge draw. Visitors have been able to get close to the extensive art collection housed in the hall whilst on their guided tour. From Stubbs, Van Dyke to Reynolds and drawings by Capability Brown, Euston Hall has a fine collection of Steward Art second only to the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Other interesting curiosities include Nelson’s telescope and a nightshirt case that once belonged to Charles II. Whilst walking around the hall signs of the current Duke and Duchess of Grafton are ever present, including the Duke’s electric guitars. A visit to the tea room is a must. Ably manned by one of the estate WI groups, there was a delicious range of homemade cakes, scones and gluten free goodies along with tea and coffee. All the proceeds from the Hall open days will be donated to local charities. Tours will restart next spring, for more information contact www.leapinghare.org Dementia-Friendly Community Launched A group of interested businesses and residents joined together at the Thomas Paine Hotel for the launch of Thetford and District Dementia Support (TADDS) project to get Thetford recognised as a Dementia Friendly Town. TADDS will be the main stakeholder and the referral point for groups. Organisations such as Tesco, Randale Care, Leaping Hare, EPIC, MCP Solicitors and The Light Cinema have signed up to work together to create a more supportive and educated community. Jo Mountjoy-Dixon from TADDS introduced the meeting with her favourite quote, “People with dementia and their carers will be empowered to have high aspirations and feel confident, this could be shopping in the supermarket, visiting a garden centre etc, without feeling conscious about their dementia.” Jo went on to explain that the feedback they get at TADDS is that some of the taxi companies in Thetford are already very good; they are patient, making the journey to TADDS a pleasant experience. “We want to hear more stories like this” said Jo. “This can make all the difference to people with dementia and allow them to live their lives to the full.” Tall Orders and Costa have also come on board to support the project. The project will run for 13 weeks, having been involved in creating Dementia Friendly Towns across Norfolk already, Jo is confident that Thetford will be successful. “Four months goes very quickly and there’s a lot of work to do. People don’t always know what they can claim, council tax disregard, attendance allowance, blue badges just to start. Tesco are planning a wide, slow checkout aisle. Roys have taken on dementia friendly community principles and The Light Cinema have trained their staff so they can host dementia friendly screenings.” Jo now needs to get more businesses involved across the town. “The value of the silver £ in Thetford is huge, a dementia friendly community is good for everyone”. Local Author Launches New Book At Elveden

Roger Pugh, a Thetford author with a keen interest in local history unveiled his second book during an afternoon at Elveden Courtyard. Uncle Sam’s Roots in Eastern England explores the links between our region and the United States of America. An enthusiastic crowd filled the café to hear how our associations go back beyond the USAF bases we are all aware of at Lakenheath and Mildenhall. Speaking about the book Roger said “Elveden Courtyard has provided a fitting venue as in 1943 the 3rd Air Division USAF used Elveden Hall as its HQ during WW2. The airmen were delighted to find out they were so near to Thomas Paine’s birthplace that they named a bomber Tom Paine and embellished it with a quote, Tyranny, like Hell, is not easily conquered.” Most of us are used to seeing stars and stripes but in 1776 and most of 1777 it featured a Union Jack and stripes. In fact the American anthem is a tune stolen from a traditional British pub song. Many who played a significant part in American history came from East Anglia, Benjamin Franklyn from Norwich, Thomas Paine from Thetford, Abraham Lincoln from Swanton Morley and Lord Arlington from Euston Hall gave his name to the Arlington National Cemetery. Even the White House is white thanks to the British, the forebears of the Royal Anglican Regt burnt down the house in 1814, when the building was refurbished the black burn marks remained so the house was painted white to cover the marks. Even one of the most iconic of American brands, Harley Davidsion has its roots in East Anglia. The Harley family came from Littleport near Cambridge before they moved to America. You can find a monument to Harley Davidson in Littleport, and sit on a copy of one of the bikes! Roger’s extensive research covers Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire. This book is a great read for those who enjoy local history and uncovering interesting facts linking the UK to the wider world. For more information visit

Family Afternoon Success Redgate House residents along with

their family and friends enjoyed a great afternoon of live music recently when Brian Ray performed there for the first time. There was plenty of fun dancing and singing as Brian performed some old favourites, “I’ve really enjoyed the lively crowd and how they are responding to the music, it’s been a great afternoon.” Along with the live music the residents also enjoyed a raffle and rounded off the afternoon with a buffet tea. Speaking about the afternoon organiser Sue Baker said, “We are really thrilled to have Brian back with us, he always goes down well at Red House, so it’s lovely to see him here. We’re delighted with all the families support, it’s been great to see everyone here.” Also joining with the fun was new member of the team, gardener Becky Worth. Becky is an experienced therapeutic horticulturist with specific training in working with older people who have specific support needs including dementia. She will be using her skills to promote the health and wellbeing of the residents at both Red House and Redgate House, RandaleCare’s two Thetford homes, as well as designing and developing the gardens to ensure that the are rich and restorative spaces for all to enjoy. Thetford U3A is our lively local division of the wildly successful University of the Third Age, a movement encouraging groups of people in their ‘third age’ to come together and fuel their enjoyment of learning, or indeed discovering, subjects of interest to them. Established 4 years ago, Thetford’s U3A enjoys 360 members and coordinates countless groups, including: photography, holidaying, wine tasting, music, science & technology and several languages - boasting over 105 members in their largest group. The philosophy is one of togetherness - “members for members” - alongside maintaining passions and interests, zeal and intrigue, into later life. Elderly citizens can often be affected by isolation and stifled by routine, so U3A inspires them to reclaim their vigour and enthusiasm.

Another Succesful TU3A Open Day

“The roots of togetherness are solidly planted” says Catherine Dubois, Vice Chair of Thetford U3A. “We must make sure that we water them properly.”

TU3A Wine Tasting Group at Adnams Brewery

Whilst the organisation is solely for those in retirement, Madame Dubois, who has been a citizen of Thetford for over 40 years, tells us that the TU3A age-range varies greatly; their youngest member being born in 1956 and their eldest in 1924. The groups offer a broad spectrum of activities; from the social to the educational, from sports to recreational. There is even an Industrial Tourism group who explore a range of industrial institutions to discover how they tick, Short tennis is played indoors with a low net and a soft foam ball every Tuesday (except school holidays) for one hour from 12:15pm at the Leisure Centre in Thetford. Cost is £1 per session and the only requirements are “comfortable clothing, suitable footwear and good humour!” Beginning with 6 members, the TU3A Music group has now expanded to 14 and has played publicly for a year, performing in venues such as Red House, Lord Walsingham Court, TADDS and the U3A Christmas Party. Colin Wallis runs the group - “Our aim is to improve our musicianship through playing together, learning from one another and at the same time enjoying ourselves.” One of the group’s members was the late “Ricky” Peter Longstaff, who sadly passed away on Thursday Morning 12th October. The group played a final gig with Peter on Monday 2nd October in his care home of Ford Place.

TU3A Music meet weekly; every Monday from 9:30am12:30pm in Croxton Hall. Those keen to join will need to bring their own instruments. The gardening and woodwork groups provided a fabulous table display for the last Mayor’s Ball. The colours of the U3A, yellow and blue, were prominent both in the flowers and the stand. Furthermore, TU3A were one of the charities of the year for Lakenheath Co-op and were awarded a generous grant (see picture top right of page). At the annual Open Day last March, visitors flocked in the main hall of the Thetford Leisure Centre to check out the activities and see the displays. Visitors could also try out badminton, short tennis and table tennis. The TU3A music group provided musical entertainment.

A popular and longstanding group is Genealogy, allowing members to explore their lineage and share their findings. The Indoor Bowls Club was established within a few weeks of TU3A. Thetford Elders Lunch Club worked tirelessly to provide tea, coffee and cake followed by a tasty jacket potato lunch to over 200 visitors. Dementia Friendly Screening Proves Successful For the first dementia friendly film screening at the Light Cinema visitors were treated to the delights of a singa-long version of an old favourite ‘Calamity Jane’ with Doris Day. Over 20 people, including the Mayor, members of the public and the TADDS (Thetford and District Dementia Support) group arrived at the cinema at 10.30am. They were greeted with free snacks and drinks to enjoy with a chat before the film started at 11.30am. Event organiser Kirsten Roberts, Marketing Manager at the Light, was there to meet people and ensure everything ran smoothly. The snacks were kindly provided by Iceland Foods who have agreed to do so for future shows. At a cost of £5 per ticket (carers go free) this is a very cost effective way to enjoy a feel-good singalong on a Wednesday morning. Subtitles played on the screen during each song so viewers could join in, lighting was dimmed but not dark, and people could move about should they feel the need. These screenings are open to anyone who would like to come along to enjoy a film knowing they are with people who understand the difficulties that someone living with memory loss

and their carers face, and that they will be in a safe environment. Future screenings will be held on the first Wednesday of the month, with films already arranged up to March 2018 including: November 1st – Singin’ in the Rain and December 6th – White Christmas. Earlier the same day the team at the Light Cinema (pictured above) took part in a Dementia Friends info session, run by Jo Mount-Joy Dixon; becoming one of the first organisations to join up to move Thetford to being a Dementia Friendly Community. The Light Cinema has also been working with a project called A Life More Ordinary. To find out more about the project please go to: dukes-lancaster.org/alifemoreordinary

Q “I have been considering a funeral plan, but I am unsure how these work or if my money will be safe” Barbara Crowther – Thetford Barbara - many people ask me about funeral plans and of course they are a very important thing I set up correctly. Firstly we have the Pre-Arranged Funeral Plan: this is where we record the funeral wishes of our clients, so that everything they want to happen when the time comes is recorded for family and next of kin. We print copies of the arrangements for our clients to keep, along with copies for their family so that their funeral wishes are known. There is no cost for this type of plan and funeral expenses are paid at the time of the funeral. Nowadays many people wish to pay in advance for their funeral and this is called a Pre-Paid Funeral Plan. So how do these work? Well, they are very similar to pre arranged plans, your funeral wishes are recorded, we then provide all of the funeral plan costs for you to consider. These reflect the cost of the funeral at today’s prices. If you then decide to pre pay all payments are made to our funeral plan provider who is regulated by the Funeral Planning Authority. This has to be done, as by law funeral directors cannot retain these funds (they must be placed into a proper trust fund). This way your funds are safe and available when they are needed for your funeral. All of the plans we provide are guaranteed against rising cost which means that nothing extra needs to be paid at the time of the funeral (some however are not, so this should be checked). Payments can be made in full or by instalments so there are many options to suit each client’s own situation. One note of caution which I think should be mentioned is that there are many plans available and many marketing companies now trying to directly sell these to you, either by telephone, online or even cold calling (always check that they are regulated by the Funeral Planning Authority).

If you have a question that you would like to ask Mark, please send it to: mark@mark-skinner.org.uk Q “Is there still a death grant available to help with funeral costs?” Peter Smith – Thetford Peter - I am sorry to say that the death grant ceased in 1986, however it is possible to get help with funeral expenses from the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). To get a payment the person applying must receive a qualifying benefit such as pension credit, child tax credit, housing benefit or universal credit. The DWP will also take into account any savings or insurance the person who has died may have had. So typically if your claim is successful a grant of between £1000.00 and £1700.00 could be made. This is quite an involved subject, so I will be placing a really detailed explanation on our website, we also have fact sheets available for anyone who may need to know how the funeral grant works and of course we are always willing to help with the application forms.

Barry Martin n Ceramic wall & floor tiling n Natural stone, mosiac, porcelain etc n Free quotes available

Personally I would always recommend that you speak to the funeral director you wish to carry out your funeral; they will guide you through the whole process, give you correct information and look after your best interests. If this is all done properly, it takes away all of the worry for yourself and those left behind.

This year’s Remembrance Sunday service for the villages covered by the Wretham and Hockham Royal British Legion branch is at St. Ethelbert’s Church at Larling , starting at 10.45am on Sunday November 12th. The service to remember all those who died in two World Wars and other conflicts moves annually between Wretham, Hockham, Shropham and Larling. Four days before that, on Wednesday November 8th, St Ethelbert at Wretham will once again be the scene of a Service of Remembrance focussing on the Czech and Polish aircrew who flew from the WW2 airfield at Wretham. Military attaches from European embassies in London will join local people in a ceremony at the war memorial outside the church gates, starting at 10.30am and led by the Rev Helen Jary, before planting poppy crosses at the 14 war graves in a corner of the churchyard. Thetford Society In October we were lucky to have a local heroine recount her story. Many people may have heard of, or perhaps remember Jo Reynolds, the country’s first ever female firefighter. She was of course based at Thetford Fire Station and she told us about the path that led her to that point. Born in Bishops Stortford, she moved with her mum to Pembrokeshire in Wales when her parents split. This meant complicated long trips to Norwich to see her father during the holidays. At 16 she moved from the comparative boredom of rural Wales to be with her dad in the bright lights of Norwich. She was not sure what career was to follow. From school and after the usual waitressing job she saw an advert for Junior Fire Fighters and with her 4 O’ levels in tow, went for it. Little did she realise that she would be the only girl amongst 400 boys. She had to complete tests such as climbing a 40ft ladder, hook her leg over the rung and lean back, carry a sand-filled dummy and negotiate a confined space blindfolded. To her amazement she was selected for an interview with a panel of 5, passed and went on to 15 months training with 5 boys.

Jo’s book ‘Fire Woman’ available to purchase from Leaping Hare, King Street for just £9.95

Jo read an amusing passage from her book about the escape and capture of the Kilverstone Zoo monkey, we then had a question and answer period. After this many copies of Jo’s book, were duly signed and purchased. On Saturday 7th October the Society had a charity quiz night in aid of the Thetford First Responders Defibrillator Fund where we raised £309. The next meeting will be Amanda Sutherland with a talk on “Theatrical Costumes of the Stage and Screen” on 7th November at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church on Earls Street. It’s About To Get Fruity During the next few weeks we will get a good idea of the extent of the Scandinavian invasion that occurs at this time every year. Being located on the eastern side of Britain, we are often the first to get plundered - or at least our berry-bearing trees and shrubs are. In some winters around two to three million thrushes, Redwings, Fieldfares, Blackbirds and Song Thrushes cross the North Sea in search of milder weather and a good supply of food. To experience this arrival, the east coast during a light east/north-easterly wind is the place to be. Seeing these birds coming in over the sea as they complete the 500 mile crossing takes some beating, and in the right conditions this natural wonder can be experienced anywhere along the North Norfolk coast. However, these birds can quickly make their way inland, in search of the berries in our hedgerows and gardens, and for a couple of hours flocks of Redwings and Fieldfares in particular, can be seen making their way west over Thetford. As the winter progresses and stocks of berries in the countryside begin to dwindle, winter thrushes often move into gardens. Windfall apples are a firm favourite, particularly if the weather turns cold. But they will also gorge on the berries of shrubs such as pyracantha, berberis and guelder rose, amongst others.

Photo by Jill Pakenham / BTO

on closer inspection Redwing has an obvious pale stripe over the eye, dark streaking on the underparts – Song Thrush is spotted – and a red patch on the side just below the folded wing. Song Thrush shows neither the stripe over the eye or the red flank patch. Fieldfare is a little larger than Blackbird and has a very different appearance. It is a mainly grey bird, with a chestnut back, pale grey rump and black tail. The upper breast is streaked on an ochre background, whilst the flanks show dark chevrons on a buffish colour. It is a striking thrush. As the winter progresses keep an eye out for these amazing travellers, and for more on their identification visit the free BTO identification videos at: http://bit.ly/2yrqiEM

So, how to tell them apart? Identifying male Blackbird should be fairly straightforward. They are one of the larger thrushes, all black with black legs; some may still show a yellow bill and eye-ring too, whilst others, often the Viking wanderers, have a dusky, sooty appearance and a black bill. The females can look a little more Song Thrush like, brown with faint speckling on the breast. However, they will always sport black legs, unlike Song Thrush, which always has pink legs. Redwing and Song Thrush are superficially similar in appearance, however,

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club November Is Time For Preparation If you are intending to take on an allotment, now is the best time of year to make the arrangements (rent was due in October, so the council will know of plots that have recently been given up). It takes time to clear the ground and loosen the soil structure ready for planting and sowing in March, so now is a good time to begin. As winter deepens the ground becomes very damp and easily compacted so you will want to avoid treading on the soil if possible. If your plot has no perennial weeds, you can use a rotovator to turn the soil quickly but this is a disaster if you have couch grass on your land. Each piece of couch grass root will sprout and create a new plant; the trusty fork is needed to reveal the root system and help to lift it. There is still time to plant garlic cloves and winter onion sets. While onions like to sit proud of the the soil, garlic needs to be 3 or 4 inches deep. It can take months for the green leaf to shoot so the area needs to be clearly marked. Pots can be planted up with tulip bulbs for a spring show (or indeed, the Spring Show); keep these where the muntjac cannot get at them as they think tulips are a great delicacy and will clear the lot as soon as they look like flowering. November is a good month to plant bare-rooted trees and shrubs so that the roots are in the soil before the frosts. The internet gives us the chance to have plants sent from anywhere in the country though it is always sensible to go by recommendation or reputation. If you have a corner for autumn-fruiting raspberries, do try them; they are such an easy plant and to pick raspberries in October when leaves are already falling from the trees is most satisfying. These and rhubarb crowns can be begged from a gardening neighbour as they spread vigorously. If you have plants in pots it is a good idea to raise them off the ground so that they do not get waterlogged. If you aren’t sure that a big pot is frost-proof then a bubble-wrap muffler is a good idea to prevent pots from cracking. You might want to provide the same protection for any outside taps or pipes at the same time.

Breckland Cats Protection Our Breckland branch is made up of some 20 volunteers; including fosterers, fund raisers and those who hold positions such as our welfare and homing officers, co-ordinator, and treasurer. We are proud of our achievements in 2017, having homed 32 adult cats and 66 kittens in the first two thirds of the year. Currently we have 8 adults and 16 kittens in our care, as well as a waiting list of cats to be housed here once we have an empty pen or spare bedroom. We have neutered 382 cats so far this year, some of which have been in our care and some of which belong to members of the public who needed help with vet’s fees. We are always happy to help anyone on a low income with the cost of neutering. We have three little 5-month-old kittens looking for new homes: Zebedee, Ermintrude and Bryony. Though they were initially a little timid, they now greet their foster family with glee. They enjoy being stroked, cuddled and having their chins scratched. Ermintrude likes nothing better than a warm lap and tummy tickles, and Zebedee will chase you if he thinks he hasn’t had enough attention. They all get along well with the fosterer’s gentle dog and her resident cat. They have been neutered, fully vaccinated, had flea and worm treatment, and been microchipped.

Zebedee - One of three cats looking for new homes at Breckland Cats Protection

We also have 2 adult black cats looking for forever homes: Belle is a 2-year-old female cat who loves human company and would make a great companion or family pet. Mimi is a 4-year-old black female cat, who is very friendly and loves a fuss. Our adoption fee for each cat or kitten is £50, which helps towards our large vet fees. They also come with 4 weeks free pet insurance. All our cats have been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped. If you feel you can give a home to one of these lovelies, please contact our homing officer, Ann, on to 01953 681092. Made Measure 1/8th Advert_Layout 1 10/02/2017 1 Rita Thompson

Thetford Faces Each month we will be featuring somebody who lives in the town and has put Thetford on the map in some way. For our first feature we will be focussing on Mrs Dolly Knights, 95, who was recently recognised for 80 years of continuous service to the Salvation Army. Dolly is believed to be the only person to have received this award which came from the Salvation Army HQ.

How did you feel about receiving the award? “It was so unexpected, I didn’t know a thing about it and I’m very grateful to my friends at the army for giving me the award. It was so lovely of them. There are years missing though because I was at Sunday school before I became a Senior!” Dolly Knights with her certificate recognising 80 years continuous service to the Salvation Army

How long have you lived in Thetford? “I’ve lived here all my life since I was born in St Nicholas Street in 1922. I’ve loved living here, I still do, I love Thetford!”

streets along with horses and carts. I grew up in St Nicholas Street; we had a cellar that was used as an air raid shelter for the whole street. I went to Norwich Road School until I was 14, then I worked at Norfolk House in White Hart Street for Mr and Mrs Woods. I helped in the house during the morning and then in the afternoon I worked in their wool shop by the town bridge. I spent most of my time at the army; we used to have band practice one night, songs to learn another night, home league on an afternoon. It was a social thing too”.

Tell me about your life as a member of the Salvation Army: “I was dedicated into the army as a baby and put on their roll. Every year until I was 5 I received a birthday card and then aged 5, I was able to join the Sunday School. When I reached 6 years old I became a Junior Soldier and got my first uniform. I used to sing and play tambourine. I did this until I was 15. After that I joined the Senior Soldiers. My dad taught me to play the baritone and I joined him in the band. I went to regular practices at the army, on a Sunday we had three open airs and three meetings. We had a big band with around 30 members. Lord Fisher paid for our citadel to be built in Magdalen Street and the YMCA next door. It’s the Conservative Club now. I still go on a Sunday and my bonnet is the original one that was made for me when I became a Senior aged 15. I write significant dates and events in the front of my bible. Years ago there was a fire at the Salvation Army, when it was refurbished they asked the oldest member and youngest member to enter the hall and I was very proud to see my husband Russell was chosen”.

Did you make lifelong friends at the Salvation Army? “I met my husband Russell through the Intech Gecko REV.qxp_Layout 1 22/08/2017 Salvation Army atADSunday School. We were together in 14:21 the army until he went to war in 1939. He was a rear

Gunner in a Lancaster bomber, but he did come home at the end. I have many friends at the army”.

Did you stay in Thetford during WW2? “No, I worked in an engineering factory for most of it. I was sent to Letchworth to train and then I went to Welwyn Garden City to work. I had to share a room and a bed with another girl. She was Catholic so we took it in turns going to each other’s services. My mum had to let my room out to an evacuee. We didn’t have much spare time but when we did we cycled round Hertfordshire. I had to come home in 1944 to look after my mum as she became ill. When I was back in Thetford I carried on as normal going to the army and playing in the band. Russell was listed as missing in action, but he was helped by the French resistance and escaped”. ran the nursery. I also continued to look after my mum. I used to go round the pubs in Thetford on a Friday evening selling the War Cry magazine for many years.

Dolly receiving her certificate from Captain Chris Mulryne at Thetford Salvation Army

What did you do after the war? “We got married and had a family, I have four children. Michael, Christopher and Rosemary. All played in the army band with me. Carol went to St Cuthbert’s because she had hearing problems and the vibrations from the noise used to cause her problems. I worked as a waitress at Ben Culey’s Anglia Café in King Street and then as a cook at Castle Day Nursery when Rosemary

What is your role at the Salvation Army now? I still run the Cradle Roll, when members are expecting I ask if they want their babies on our roll, and then I take them a birthday card each year until they join Sunday School. My children, grandchildren and great grandchildren are on the roll in Thetford. I’m still involved with the home league, but sadly I had to give up the band last year. Every week I attend Sunday services. Editor’s Note: Karen thoroughly enjoyed talking with Dolly and found her story to be fascinating. We hope you enjoyed reading it! Thetford Peace Centre and Garden Thetford United Reformed Church opened its doors on a Thursday between 12 noon and 3pm for anyone who wants to spend time in peaceful reflection. In March they dedicated their Peace Pole as a centre piece in their garden and it is now part of the Thetford trail of Peace Poles. “We are hoping that the Centre will be a place of welcome, of chat, of friendship and a venue for quiet reflection for everybody in the town and area”, said Robert Ogden who is leading this development. “We hear constantly of the need for well-being, of the plight of people who are lonely and also of the busyness that life has become for people, so providing a centre where they have time to themselves or can simply share conversation over a cup of tea or coffee is something that we can offer”.

Events at Thetford United Reformed Church for the Advent Season and Christmas There are a number of events planned for the Christmas Period. December 7th 6:30pm Light Up a Life Service in support of St Nicholas Hospice December 10th 3:00pm Christingle Service for all the family December 17th 6:30pm The Waveney Choir Christmas Concert December 24th 10:30am Family Christmas Celebration Service

The Peace Centre has hosted two evening discussion groups on the theme of Peace in our Community and more are planned. There is also a small exhibition reflecting peace. Tea and coffee are given to those who drop in and during the winter months, soup will be added to the refreshments available. The idea of developing this Peace Centre followed a visit to the Royal Foundation of St Katharine in London. St. Katharine’s is a place where many visitors have recognised its sense of calm and peace and that this can transform the way they feel so “we hope that we can replicate this to benefit the people of Thetford”.

Cre8tive Hair November 2017.qxp_Layout 1 12/10/201

Rosacea Rosacea is an inflammatory disease which affects an estimated 6 million people in the UK alone. Its cause is still relatively unknown, but it is likely to be a mixture of both hereditary and environmental factors. It causes small facial blood vessels to vasodilate, inflame and cause pustules. There are four types of Rosacea. Clients normally flush easily and this is followed by persistent redness on the face and also with or without clusters of small spots or pustules.

Although the cause of Rosacea is not fully understood it is thought to be abnormalities of the blood vessel wall which could be a factor. Certain triggers which may make this condition worse include: spicy food, alcohol, temperature changes, cosmetics which include, alcohol, menthol, and witch hazel, fragrances and certain other foods, caffeine.

There are treatments which can help Rosacea conditions. We offer IPL treatments in the salon for the types with flushing and dilated capillaries and find this treatment to be very effective. For the types with pustules and lesions topical metronidazole gel, or possibly oral antibiotics, these need to be medically prescribed. However, good consistent skincare is very important and especially the use of a broad spectrum UV block. Although Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition, it can be managed by avoiding the triggers, consistent good skincare routine, healthy diet and medical intervention. These have proven to help sufferers to lessen the negative impact on their self esteem.

Smooth Operator

Here`s my simple recipe using left over pumpkins from celebrating Halloween. I`ve devised you a lovely simple exfoliation recipe that will not only be perfect boost for the face and neck area. If you haven’t got any pumpkin substitute it for sweet potato or banana.

This seasonal transition is a great time to re-evaluate our skincare routines and give them a little pick-me-up boost. This doesn`t need to be expensive, items can be found simply by looking through your kitchen store cupboards, using ingredients that you probably use for cooking anyway. By taking some much deserved “me” time for your skin, you will help to prevent dry chapped skin and help to boost your skin. Think of how our skin is our protection, treat it mean and it will show. Keep it keen and it will glow! I`ve collated a list of examples, of food items you can use to help smooth and exfoliate your skin without paying the price tag.

Stepping Stones Emporium, Homemade Face and Neck Skin Exfoliator: 1 cup of sugar granules (brown is best but white is fine), 1/8 cup of melted coconut oil ½ cup of pumpkin puree, Fragrance (optional) vanilla extract is nice or sprinkle with a little cinnamon to add seasonal spice. Combine all ingredients into a bowl and apply to the face and neck starting from the neck upwards working in small circular motions to increase circulation and bring fresh blood to the surface. Work gently, remember our skin is delicate. Wash off with warm water and moisturise. Exfoliate your skin 1-2 times per week. Happy exfoliating!

• Walnut Shells: Packed full of Vitamin B which helps to moisturise as well as exfoliate. • Ground Oats: Fantastic for sensitive skins such as those that suffer with eczema or acne. Helps to lighten the complexion. Perfect on the face and neck. • Poppy Seeds: Great for inflammation of the skin such as those suffering from spots or acne. Perfect for back, neck and shoulders as well as face area. • Sugar: Much gentler than salt as it has smaller granules. It is a natural humectant which means it locks in moisture. Lovely on the face and neck. • Salt: Great on oily skins, boosts the circulation and opens up pores nicely. Great on the body such as legs. • Ground Coffee: Increases the circulation and reduces puffiness. Great on lower body and legs. • Sunflower Seeds: Contain essential fatty acids excellent for production of elastin and collagen and we need these to help support our skin, make it smooth and keep it supple. Perfect for face and neck area.

Thetford Inner Wheel The Thetford Inner Wheel meetings will, for the rest of the year, be held at the Thomas Paine Hotel.

I’m NOT Hormonal!

Do you suffer with any of the following: Mood changes? Disturbed sleep? Anxiety/depression? Resistance to weight loss? Problematic skin? Feeling tired, lethargy? President Jackie Clark and Mr John Brown

Our speaker for the most recent meeting was John Brown, a farmer from Icklingham. He spoke about the problem of illegal metal detecting on farms people known as ‘Night Hawks’ as they go out in the dark treasure hunting. This area is of special interest because of our historical background. It became apparent that a large haul of antiquities, known as the 'Icklingham Hoard', had been stolen from his land. It ended up in private ownership in America. A court case followed the knowledge of its whereabouts, the outcome of which means that it will be bequeathed to our country on the death of the present owner. Liz Hodgson

How many times do you hear ‘Must be time of the month!’ or ‘Blaming the Menopause again?’ The truth is hormonal imbalance can really impact your life & those around you, but there is something you can do. Give us 28 days and we can change how you think, feel & look. Contact us for further information or simply express interest in our free clean eating for hormone balance guide & we will happily drop it into your inbox today!

Thetford Women’s Institute Congratulations to the Thetford W.I Darts team at the County finals in Norwich when they were runners up, the winners - Coltishall W.I.

The October meeting took place on the same evening as the finals darts match so we were waiting to hear results. Our speaker was Jill Macready who talked about growing vines for English wines. Jill has a long family history connected with wine making as her father began his love affair with wine making whilst working in Africa. On returning to the UK he bought a large estate in Suffolk to pursue his hobby. Jill and her husband went on to set up a vineyard in the walled garden of the National Trust property at Ickworth House. They were very successful and won many awards for their wines. However, the National Trust decided they didn’t want a vineyard on their premises and the vineyard had to be scrapped. Jill and her husband sold off the vines on a “buy a vine” basis and people all over the country purchased these vines. Joyce Doubleday gave a vote of thanks expressing our pleasure in listening to such an interesting story. Anyone wanting to know more about Thetford W.I. can get further information by contacting Rose Peterson on 01842 754273. Barbara Youngs

England and Portugal: A Celebration Of World’s Oldest Alliance Thetford’s own Inspire Focus hosted a fascinating and in depth presentation recently on the lineage of the world’s oldest alliance; Portugal and England. Heritage researcher Adelina Pereira shared some of her historical discoveries as part of the ‘Sharing Heritage’ Lottery-funded project: Portuguese Roots. The heritage project “explores the many centuries old history, the interplay between the two countries, inter-migration, the personal stories and the cultural and social exchanges between the world’s oldest allies.”

Europe on their way to the Holy Land. During this pilgrimage, Constable of Suffolk, Hervey Glanville, was requested by Afonso I to help conquer the city of Lisbon from the Moors – leading to what would later be coined the ‘Siege of Lisbon’, seeing Lisbon under definitive Portuguese control. Now, in 2017, after a long and interwoven narrative involving saints and monarchs, Portuguese presence in East Anglia and indeed throughout the UK resonates. Religious, monarchical and political relics of Portuguese influence are ample in London’s churches and palaces, and gleams of Portuguese culture can be found within towns across the country. Simon Goodwin, About Thetford Reporter

A captivating and informative video written, directed and filmed by the young people of Inspire Focus was broadcasted during the event. The short film included a brief and quirkily animated history of the long-held alliance and eye-opening interviews from local Portuguese citizens, giving a present-day context to an ancient kinship. The presentation was followed by a workshop exploring personal heritage stories from the local Portuguese-speaking community. Mark Ereira-Guyer, Director of Big Society Funding who helped organise and fund the event, felt that the event was a great success, “I am delighted to see local young people from Thetford work collaboratively with us to explore the 860 years of Anglo-Portuguese partnership and friendship - and to celebrate our joint heritage. This small project has truly come alive, and we hope the resulting exhibition later this year will then enable more local people in the town to learn more about how people from Portuguese backgrounds have contributed to economic, community and social life”

Why Not Give Volunteering A Try? As many of you will be aware, a lot has been happening in recent months at the Charles Burrell Centre (CBC) from Open Days, an 80’s night and strictly dance classes to name just a few. However, I wanted to take this opportunity to talk to you about a subject that is close to my heart - volunteering. Here at CBC we are keen to develop, promote, host and champion community-based volunteering without which we would not be able to offer the services and opportunities that we do.

Burrell Memorial Garden opposite our centre. CBC team members the local community recently restored the garden to its former glory. There is still much work to do and many more volunteering opportunities available. If you would like to get involved, become a member or your business would like to support us. Why not pop in for a chat or come and see what we do. You can contact me on 01842 779867 or visit us at Charles Burrell Centre, Staniforth Road, Thetford IP24 3LH. I am also available by email and can be contacted directly via: tom@charlesburrellcentre.org.uk

We recently organised a number of volunteering days to help us improve the 12 hectares of our grounds. Tesco’s Community Champions helped us to sort out the green spaces at the front of our centre; planting and tidying in preparation for our recent open day. This was followed by a highly successful courtyard gardening project undertaken by members of the ThunderCats cheerleading squad where they not only restored flowerbeds, cleaned, painted and planted the courtyard but learnt all about horticulture and the many different plants that now call our courtyard home. A huge thank you to all who supported our recent projects particularly Youth Social Action, Tesco’s Community Champions, ThunderCats, Routes and Roots, Shadwell Estate Nova Training and of course our team members here at CBC.

Tax Clinic By Colin Chamberlain

TAX ASSESSMENTS ARE BACK! I am old enough to remember the time before selfassessment tax returns. In those long-gone days the then Inland Revenue would raise an estimated tax assessment, the taxpayer would appeal, a tax return would be submitted and the figures would be agreed and the tax paid. New Simple Assessments By virtue of powers given to them in the 2016 Finance Act, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is turning the clock back over 20 years and has now started to issue new ‘simple assessments’. This is all part of the Government’s bold initiative to, as far as possible, abolish the tax return. A simple assessment notice (form PA302) may be issued by HMRC and must be based on information held that has been provided by the taxpayer or third parties (eg an employer or pension provider). A simple assessment notice is a legally enforceable demand for payment. As simple assessments are based on information already held by HMRC, it is important to note that, if a taxpayer has other income or capital gains that are not included in the simple assessment notice, there is still a requirement to notify HMRC of any chargeability to tax in relation to these. Payment of Tax Where a simple assessment has been issued, the amount of tax assessed is generally due on or before 31 January after the end of the tax year concerned. So, for a simple assessment relating to the year ended 5 April 2017, the tax is due by 31 January 2018. However, if the simple assessment notice is issued after 31 October, payment is due three months after the date of the simple assessment. Right of Appeal Taxpayers do have a right of appeal against a simple assessment. However, there is no right of appeal until the taxpayer has raised a query about the simple assessment and been given a final response by HMRC. The right to query must be exercised within 60 days of the date of the simple assessment notice. If HMRC

decides that it needs time to consider the query, it has the power to postpone the notice, in whole or in part. After the query has been considered by HMRC, it must confirm, amend or withdraw the simple assessment and notify the taxpayer concerned. The First Simple Assessments At first, the simple assessments will be issued to the following groups of taxpayers who are not already within self-assessment: • Those who started to draw the state pension in the 2016/17 tax year and who have total income in excess of their personal allowance for that year (£11,000 for 2016/17); and • Individuals taxed under PAYE who have unpaid tax for 2016/17 and who cannot have that tax collected through PAYE. Other pensioners with a state pension greater than their personal allowance will be taken out of self-assessment for 2017/18 and subsequent years. Check the Figures If you receive a simple assessment from HMRC, it is important that you check the figures. In my experience, ‘simple’ and ‘HMRC’ rarely sit comfortably together and there may well be errors in the simple assessments that are being sent out, especially in the early days of this new system. If you have any concerns, it is vital that queries are raised with HMRC within the 60day time frame. After this, the simple assessments become binding and it will be very difficult to get them overturned. Conclusion: If you have any questions about simple assessments or any other area of tax, I can be contacted at c.chamberlain@lovewell-blake.co.uk or on 01842 755032. Don’t be frightened of your staff

F

The reality is that you can never be sure that an employee will not make a claim, however with the requirement that all claimants make an Early Conciliation Notification to ACAS prior to their claim being accepted by the Employment Tribunal an employer ought to have advance notice that a claim may be issued and should therefore have an opportunity to consider their position and whether defending that claim or settling it is more appropriate at that stage.

or employers an employee or former employee bringing a claim against them in the employment tribunal is a problem best avoided.

The costs involved in dealing with such disputes, both in terms of financial burden and management time, can escalate quickly taking valuable resources away from the day to day running of the business. So is there anything that an employer can do to avoid such claims being made against them?

Once ACAS issue a certificate confirming that the Early Conciliation requirements have been met then the Claimant may issue proceedings in the Employment Tribunal.

Of course there are steps which can be taken to minimise the risk. Ensuring you have good management procedures in place will help, as will providing your employees with Contracts of Employment and having an Employee Handbook which is easily accessible to employees. It will depend on the size of your organisation and the type of business you operate as to what areas those policies and procedures contained in the Employee Handbook will cover but, at the very least, you should ensure that grievance and disciplinary procedures are clearly set out and are in line with the ACAS Code of Conduct. An Equal Opportunities Policy coupled with relevant training is also important to minimise the risk of discrimination claims.

It is important that employers seek advice from an experienced solicitor at the earliest opportunity when faced with a potential claim by an employee. In order to minimise the risk of future claims, and to ensure you are best placed to deal with them if they do arise, it is prudent to have an experienced solicitor review your employment contracts and existing policies and procedures on a regular basis to ensure they comply with current law. For more information, please contact Clare Riches on 01842 754151 or via email: clare.riches@rudlings-wakelam.co.uk

When problems do arise, ensure that you follow your own policies and procedures and make sure that any meetings are documented. If your employee later brings a claim against your organisation those notes, taken at the time, will be invaluable as evidence.

Thetford Business Forum The Thetford Business Forum (TBF) has 75 members and meets quarterly for breakfast. The Forum is a collective of business people representing companies and other organisations in the area. The main aim of the group is to have a collective voice to support Thetford with a focus on the economic growth of the area. The TBF committee is made up of a cross section of business leaders and has recently developed a strategy to take the forum forward at a time when Thetford is anticipated to grow at a greater rate. Keen to ensure jobs and business is at the forefront of any council plans for the area the TBF has rebranded and will be rolling out a new website in the coming months.

A recent meeting of the Thetford Business Forum held at the Bell Hotel

Representatives from TBF sit on committees and attend meetings of local and district councils and other organisations, through invitation in many cases. Given the authority to represent the local business community by the TBF members. This ensures the local commercial economy is given a voice as the town develops. TBF also works with local schools and supports the town’s tourism office through Leaping Hare. Mike Brown is a local businessman, founding member of the TBF and Vice-Chair of the forum. “With the considerable number of houses planned for Thetford, the town needs to ensure the right facilities are in place to support the growth which includes job creation. Having a strong business voice in town and as a collective will help towards maintaining that focus”.

The TBF has recently introduced networking offshoots to engage with local businesses and to include bringing into the fold the next generation of business leaders. New groups set up to support specific employment areas include: • Thetford Young Business Group – a social post work group which meets regularly in town and attracts 18-35 year olds working in business in the area. • Thetford Manufacturing Club – involving business people working in manufacturing. • TBF HR Group – HR Managers and others in business, interested in developing, training and growing their workforce by employing local people or attracting job seekers to the town • TBF Twilight Meetings – welcoming anyone working in business in town keen to meet and network with like-minded, Thetford focused, people.

Help Your Mental Health The Impact Of Sleep By Emma Williams

Lack of sleep impacts upon us in a variety of ways. We become anxious, stressed, dry skin, experience a loss of energy, weight gain and a weakened immune system. I recommend reviewing your sleep routine with simple changes. It will have a positive impact on your life.

AYd D N r

O tfo M The Recommendations • The Natural Sleep foundation recommends 7-9 hours for 18 – 64yrs and 7-8 hours for 65+. • Get up the same time every day. Work out how much sleep you need to function at your optimum and what time you will be getting up, this will give you your bedtime. If you need 8 hours sleep and want to get up at 6.30am, lights out at 10.30pm. • If you are tired, don’t lie -in in the morning. Go to bed early that night. • Give yourself time to unwind. Switch off screens an hour before bedtime. • Get some exercise to help you sleep better • If you have to nap, make it 30 minutes maximum. • Relaxation techniques. Close your eyes and feel your whole body relax as you breathe out. Focus on your belly and relax all the muscles, relax your chest and shoulder. Relax the face, let the teeth fall apart and the tongue rest in the back of the mouth. Take a long breath in through the nose and a long breath out feeling the rise and fall of the belly. Do this 3 times and then take the focus back to the shoulders and body, relaxing down into the bed as you breathe out. Now just breathe naturally letting the breath come in and out of the belly, on every out breath feel the body melting into the bed. • Look on line and listen to a number of guided sleep relaxation/hypnosis guides. Find a voice you like with appropriate music to help.

Wiggle the Niggle Many lifestyle factors can contribute to aches and pains in our bodies. Whilst having a professional massage can help eliminate toxic build up between muscle fibres and promote healing, the great news is that there are some simple self-massage techniques you can do to prevent and treat minor muscle irritations. Reflect Health would like to share with you a general guide on self treatment.

Emma (left) and Dione (Reflex Health)

Identify where you feel pain, warm the area and apply pressure. Don’t worry about getting it right or being ‘professional’, be guided by what your body is telling you. Simply press and rub around the general area of where the pain seems to be coming from and notice any points where the pain gets a little more intense. Once you’ve found the spot, apply pressure using fingers, hands or any other tool that reaches to press on the spot until it’s uncomfortable (but not painful) and hold until you feel a reduction in the pain. And breathe....! A tennis ball and a wall can be really useful in getting to spots you can’t reach. Just place the ball between you and wall and move until you hit the spot and hold. A foam roller is another great tool you can use for a larger area, simply place on a hard, flat surface and roll your body over it. And remember, prevention is better than cure. Get conscious about what your body is telling you and treat as you go.

New Exercise Taster Sessions

Following the success of the Life is For Living exercise group, a new pilot group is being set up in town. Thetford Local People’s Programme will be hosting 6 free taster sessions of Chair Based Exercise for over 50s at the Church of the Nazarene, from Monday 6th November 2017 finishing with the last session on 11th December. Sessions are completely free from 10-11am with light refreshments provided afterwards. Come and join our friendly fully qualified instructor Emma for an hour of fun gentle exercise followed by a cuppa and natter with the rest of the group. Just turn up in comfy clothes on the day or contact Sheena Tate by email: sheena.tate@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk or call on 07442505603 for more details.

Fitness Column #4 - Mental Health If we’re not seeing it on the television, we’re hearing it on the radio or we’re seeing it on social media, ‘It’s ok to not be ok’. Mental health awareness is everywhere at the moment and it’s nothing to be ashamed of. We all suffer in our own way, have our own insecurities and anxieties and it’s important to know we’re not alone. What is important to know are the ways you can combat your daily stresses, anxieties and self-confidence issues. Some people may get their nose into a good book, some may whack head phones on and run a few miles, some look to their family and loved ones for support – I, personally, turn to my training. If I’ve had a particularly rough and stressful day, nothing helps keep that stress under control better than either going to the gym, hitting a fitness class or doing some sort of exerting activity. Fitness classes are ace to help you build your self confidence and help work towards your anxiety issues. Be part of a small community that’s welcoming, friendly and where everyone all has the same interests while keeping up with your fitness – winner!

messenger that carries signals between brain cells. It often gets blamed for addiction – which can be a good thing. When you do something you enjoy doing, dopamine gets released as a reward and fills you with good chemicals. Half the reason we go back to any certain thing. Unfortunately, this also works with drugs and alcohol. If a human takes a drug, drinks alcohol, the body releases dopamine because it thinks this abuse is a good thing, hence addiction. Especially smoking. The same happens when you work out. Have you ever heard someone say, ‘you’re addicted to the gym?’ In some cases, this could be true, a person can get such a dose of dopamine release that they enjoy working out so much, training becomes a big part in their lives. My point: Stay healthy, join a gym or group exercise and get your endorphin and dopamine release the happy and healthy way, your body will thank you for it in the long run. Starting out? Taking that massive leap and actually walking in to a room can be the most daunting thing in the world. A lot of people I talk to have raised their concerns about taking that first step. I always offer to meet them at the door of the building and we’ll walk in together. Bring a friend – studies show that you’re 60% more likely to hit a target when doing it with a buddy. Encourage a friend or family member to come with you, it can really help to know someone when you walk through the door, it calms anxiety and self-confidence issues and you get to have some team building with your chosen work out partner!

Are you a member of a local group?

If so, send us an email with details of your activities and we may be able to include them in future editions. The deadline for inclusion in the December 2017 edition will be the 15th November. Brunning Electrical .qxl:Layout 1 25/11/2013 23:53 Pag E-mail: karen@aboutthetfordmagazine.co.uk
