David Unveils His Latest Book Local historian and author, David Osborne has released the latest in his series of Thetford’s Inn, Pubs and Beerhouses books, The Anchor Inn. Anyone who has either been on one of David’s guided walks or been to his Pubs and Beerhouses talks will know just how knowledgeable and passionate he is about the subject. His series of books have been a real labour of love and have given readers a real insight into past life in the town. The Anchor Inn was built on the site of the Christopher Inn alongside the river by the town bridge in 18th century and underwent many changes over the centuries. Famously the Anchor was also the location for the first scene in the first episode of Dad’s Army and had a strong link to the TV series as it was also a favourite haunt for some of the cast. Speaking about his latest book David said, “The story of the Anchor itself is fascinating. It has an interesting history and I’ve enjoyed looking at what has happened over the years.” The Anchor like many of the local pubs held Coroner’s inquests, but the Anchor’s were for those who had drowned in the river, it once had a bowls club and there is only one instance of the premises being listed as a coaching inn despite employing an Ostler and having stabling. Auctions were also held at the site, and gruesomely in the 1860s the body of a baby was found in the privy. David continued, “The building itself has changed dramatically over the years, the mock Tudor façade we all remember appeared in the 1930s and the Norvic Room was built

the

David signing one of his new books, The Anchor Inn

around the same time. I’ve brought the story up to date with the opening of The Light Cinema in 2016.” There was a long campaign fought by the local community to try and save the Anchor building before the site was redeveloped. After its demolition the site underwent some archaelogical investigations which David has covered in his book along with the local protests. David says that he has enjoyed writing his books and is looking forward to releasing his 5th book, Thetford Beerhouses in 2019. “You never know what you might discover, it’s always a big thrill when you make a new discovery in a record office or library. I am also indebted to Stuart and Sarah Wilson for editing the book, and to everyone who has lent photos and shared information with me. I hope people enjoy the book.” ‘The Anchor’ is on sale for £7 at Leaping Hare, 20 King Street, Thetford, Norfolk www.leapinghare.org

The Battle’s Over - A Nation’s Tribute The Loyal Company of Town Criers and other Town Crying Organisations throughout the World are playing its part in ‘Battle’s Over’. This is an international commemoration marking 100 years since the guns fell silent at the end of World War I. Organised by Pageantmaster Bruno Peek, Battle’s Over takes place on November 11th 2018, with events throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, and at scores of locations overseas, including New Zealand, Ireland, Australia, Bermuda, France, Belgium, Canada, the United States and Germany. It begins at 6am with over 1,000 lone pipers playing Battle’s O’er, a traditional Scottish air played after a battle, outside cathedrals and other individual locations throughout the country and overseas, following which a specially written tribute will be read out. At 6.55pm buglers will sound the Last Post at more than 1,000 locations, where at 7pm WW1 Beacons of Light will be lit in a tribute signifying the light of peace that emerged from the darkness of four years of war. Then at 7.05pm over 1,000 churches and cathedrals will ring their bells as part of Ringing Out for Peace organised in association with the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers, which represents 65 societies of ringers from the British Isles and overseas. Also at 7.05pm, more than 140 town criers will perform a specially written ‘Cry for Peace Around the World’, the first of them in New Zealand and then across the globe through the various time zones. Autumn Brings New Season Of Silver Social Activities The Silver Social will be returning for its Autumn Programme with Breckland residents spoilt for choice with workshops and performances from outstanding international performers, Edinburgh Fringe award winners and prestigious London Southbank artists. Zimbabwean singer Anna Mudeka returns to Breckland in early November, as she takes you on a journey through the music of her homeland. Seamlessly weaving story with song, Anna will share her experience of southern African culture to local audiences. Her powerful vocals and instrumental artistry will bring alive the rich musical tradition of Zimbabwe in a performance that is soothing, uplifting and educational. This year Silver Social have commissioned local musicians Joe Mace and Carl Cole through Aldeburgh Music to bring five fun-filled musical workshops to our district in November. Everyone is encouraged to come along and meet new people while having fun ‘playing’ with music. In late November Breckland will welcome the awardwinning Bowjangles, an all-dancing, singing, juggling and joking string quartet, fresh from the Edinburgh Fringe and Wondergound Speigeltent on London’s Southbank. Their new show, Excalibow was a huge success at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival with five-star reviews and romped home with the prestigious ‘Spirit of the Fringe’ award. Not to be missed!

The Silver Social is an exciting programme in the heart of Norfolk, aimed at bringing arts to older people in rural communities. As an Arts Council strategic touring funded project, managed by Breckland Council, Silver Social brings something a little different to daily life in towns and villages across Breckland, Norfolk, through touring circuits of creative workshops and live performances.

This month’s Thetford Faces are Safina Karim and Tracy Terry from Thetford Academy. Safina teaches English and Tracy is the 6th Form Raising Achievement Manager. The former Staniforth Secondary Modern School pupils met at West Suffolk College in 2009 when they did their degrees together. They have embarked on a series of challenges together whilst raising money for charity. The Great Wall of China where Tracy and Safina will undertake their challenge and walk 70km.

Tracy Terry (left) and Safina Karim

Have you lived in Thetford all your lives? Safina: I moved here when I was 12 years old with my Stepfather’s work. Tracy: I moved to Thetford in 1979 when I was 11, my Stepfather was originally from Thetford and we moved back for work. He worked at Danepak. What made you decide to walk the Great Wall of China? Safina: We had a discussion one day about my bucket list which included walking the Great Wall of China, Tracy mentioned that she’d seen it as a Discovery Adventure fundraiser and that started our adventure. I definitely think it was Tracy’s idea. Tracy: Saf turned up at school and said, “that’s it – I’ve signed up, it’s your turn”. Safina: I was feeling a bit panicked by this point! I guess you could say it was a combined idea that got us started!

What made you choose the Alzheimer’s Society to support? Tracy: It was a joint idea, we both worked with someone whose son worked for the Alzheimer’s Society. Originally we signed up for a Memory Walk with a group of TTA staff in Norwich last year, because we did the memory Walk we decided to continue with the Alzheimer’s Society. The year before we raised money for CRUK through the Shine Walk. Safina: My Father in Law is showing early signs of having the condition. We just wanted to help the charity. We have raised £5,335.00 of our £6,600 target so far. How did you plan your fundraising? Tracy: We thought about all the different community events we could be part of and what we could offer. We also had lots of support from our colleagues at school and the kids. We’ve made gifts to sell at the Christmas Market and started a street food stall. We also took part in The Punjabi Festival and Cricket Club events. Safina: I decided to shave my long hair off, I raised £580. Several teachers had their beards shaved off at school, the kids have given us endless support and been phenomenal. We did quiz nights, bucket collections, CBC events, fun days and on it went. My tutor group gave up their Saturdays to help me and we’ve had support from several local businesses too. Have your fundraising efforts inspired the students at Thetford Academy? One of our Year 7’s has a parent with MS, after seeing

some of the activities we were doing she was inspired to raise money for the hospital where her loved one is being treated. Everyone joined in to support her. The 6th Form Student Union have now started to do fundraising. They’ve seen what we’ve done and want to raise money for the 6th Form and the Rucksacks From Rotary Project. What has been your favourite fundraising activity? Safina: I think the Curry and Folk Night was one of my favourite events. Tracy: I enjoyed the Cricket Club 18 All Out event, it had a great atmosphere. We also did a curry night at the Football Club with around 15 different dishes, that was quite something.

Tracy and Safina serving their street food at an event, shortly after Safina had her long hair shaved off

Safina: Did we really do all of that?! We did really work hard to raise the money, but we did it because Thetford got behind us. We made the guarantee point in August. Has there been an outcome from your fundraising that you will continue? Tracy: We’re going to continue with Aya Cuisine because we’ve had such positive feedback from people. It was Safs idea, someone asked why we didn’t do a curry night as a fundraiser, so we did! Safina: It gives us a real sense of achievement when we see people enjoying real authentic Indian food. We’ve always cooked a curry for the staff on the last day of term and it’s just grown from then. What do your family think about your adventure? Safina: We couldn’t have done it without their support. They’ve all got behind our fundraising and think it is a great thing that we are going to do in China. Tracy: Especially our husbands, they’ve been incredible with their help. We couldn’t have done it without them.

Your fundraising has been a mammoth task, but only one part of your adventure. How do you feel about the walk? Safina; We knew from day one why we were doing it, the fundraising kept us to plan. It’s a chance in a lifetime Tracy: I think I’m still in denial about the walk, we have to carry everything! I’m gutted that David Beckham was there a week before this interview. It’ll be interesting to hear how the others in our group have raised their money. There are 29 people in our group from all over the UK. How far will you be walking each day? Tracy: We’ll average 10km each day, the walk is about 70km over 7 or 8 days. Safina: It’s going to be a massive culture shock, I’m a bit nervous. One night we are staying in a farmhouse with a family. What’s the best thing about living in Thetford? Safina: Seeing the children that I went to school with have their own families, I’m now teaching their children! I love working with all the local families. My husband always says he can’t imagine living anywhere else. It’s the people that make the town. Tracy: From a work point of view, it’s seeing the growth of the students as they start 6th Form, then when they leave and go off into the world. I love being down town and hearing “Hello Miss”. Between us it feels like we know everyone! There are some amazing people in Thetford. Have you lined up your next challenge? Tracy: We are doing the MacMillan South Coast Mighty Hike next year, it’s only a one day challenge this time! Ignition For Centre’s New Projects Charles Burrell Centre is set to launch some exciting new projects in coming months supported by regional and national funders who have taken a keen interest in the development of the former high school building. Since opening in 2014, the centre has created a number of new businesses, community groups and employment opportunities whilst providing access to vital services in education and wellbeing. The latest plans are to refurbish the former school canteen and kitchens to create a very unique space for visitors to enjoy food and drink as well as the creation of training hub to help individuals gain qualifications in the catering industry. This development will also support community and corporate events hosted in the former assembly hall which has recently been refurbished as part of a grant from Big Lottery through Power to Change. It is hoped that the project will be ‘ignited’ through a funding opportunity with the Aviva Community Fund. CBC is one of many local organisations to have qualified for an online poll which is now live on the Aviva Community website. Supporters of the centre can now vote for CBC to receive funding. The grant would be used to recruit an Event Coordinator who will be responsible for hosting at least one community event each week ensuring that they are accessible for all ages and abilities. In recent weeks the centre has gained recognition from Norfolk County Council for helping to combat loneliness and isolation through providing volunteering and work experience opportunities. The new projects will increase those opportunities further and support the long term sustainability of centre. To register your vote online for Charles Burrell Centre’s ‘Project Ignition’ please visit:

The Charles Burrell Centre team pictured following the recent CBC Open Day in September

Lions Club Thank-You Thetford Lions Club would like to thank all those who have supported our town centre fundraising efforts in recent months. Most recently in September our stalls raised £132 for our community service funds. We are beginning to get a response to our appeal for people to get in touch who have concerns for which a little help could make a big difference. The Club contact details can be found on our website or Facebook page.

Out and About Thetford

Storytelling Success at TGS A delighted audience including the Mayor and Mayoress of Thetford enjoyed a bumper evening of storytelling in the atmospheric Old School building at Thetford Grammar School. Fresh from her performances during the Festival of Thetford and Punjab, Sarah Brady drew roars of laughter as she introduced herself with tales of discovering life in England, her desire to share her love of literary references and her quest for the perfect life. Sarah continued to tell the story of the Battle of Gettysburg, the audience was gripped as Sarah took them back to the battle scene with a story of adversity, courage and determination. Following Sarah was former Bard of Marion and Sarah with the Mayor and Mayoress Cambridge, Marion Leeper returning to Thetford once more to share her own take on the Italian 16th century epic Orlando Furioso. Marion captivated the audience with her magical stories of knights, hippogriffs, weapons of mass destruction and Angelica, the object of desire for all. Anna Jenner, Chair of Friends of TGS said, “We are delighted to welcome such incredible storytellers here this evening and to have Old School open to the public as part of our programme of events.” New Team Rector For Thetford Decked out in beautiful autumnal flowers, St Cuthbert’s Church was packed full of invited guests, parishioners, friends and the family of Revd Dr Peter Herbert as he was inducted as Team Rector of Thetford Team Ministry. The congregation were welcomed by Rt Revd Alan Winton, Bishop of Thetford who led Revd Herbert through the Institution process before Archdeacon of Norwich, the Venerable Karen Hutchinson then led the Induction ceremony. Introducting Revd Herbert to the congregation, the Bishop thanked everyone who had worked together since the retirement of Canon Bob Baker in October 2016. “Peter comes with rich ministerial experience and I’m am delighted to welcome him to Thetford” Revd Herbert has a background in science, with a PhD in the field of Astro Physics and lists cosmology as one of his interests. Speaking about his Institution and Induction, Revd Herbert said, “Caroline and I are hugely excited to be here with you. Thank you to all of you for being here with us this evening, it’s lovely to have so many of you from our new church family welcoming us.” Revd Herbert also joked whilst thanking the coach load of well-wishers from his former parish in Cromer that he hoped they’d come to send him off and not to make sure that he’d really gone! However, judging from all the warm comments, and laughter from the pews, Revd Herbert and his wife Caroline will be sorely missed in Cromer. A reception in the Carnegie followed. Preview Evening For Local Businessess

Thetford Business Forum enjoyed their latest twilight meeting at The Courtyard, Elveden. These sessions enable the group to get together in a more informal setting than the regular breakfast meetings. Twilight meetings are usually hosted by a member who would like to share what they offer as a business with the group. With over 80 members from small and large businesses across the town, TBF has been working to promote Thetford as a thriving place for business and career opportunities. The group also support mainly Matthew Emery with members of Thetford Business Forum local initiatives and have partnered with West Suffolk College to offer young people meaningful work experience placements through the Place 21 scheme. During the meeting Matthew Emery showcased a new range of hampers and TBF members were able to sample canapes made using products available in The Courtyard Food Hall. Speaking about the event Chris Kennard, Chair of TBF said, “I’m very grateful to Elveden for hosting our quarterly twilight event, it’s also been good to see some new faces join us this evening.” For more information about TBF visit www.thetfordbusinessforum.co.uk Torch of Remembrance Visits Thetford The Mayor, Mayoress, Members and officers of Thetford Town Council were joined by Royal British Legion members from Thetford and across the county as the Norfolk RBL Remembrance Torch stopped in the town as part of its tour of the county. The torch started its poignant journey from the Menin Gate, Ypres, Belgium as part of the Great Pilgrimage, GP90. At noon on October 17th Thetford held a short service to remember those who gave their lives during WW1. Rev Helen Jary opened the service reading In Flanders Fields, Mike Wabe acted as MC for the event and the last post was played by local musician Andy Reeves before a two minute silence. The torch was handed from a veteran serviceman to a young person as a symbol of remembrance from one generation to another; two 6th Formers from Thetford Grammar school were chosen to receive the torch. In his speech, Mayor of Thetford Cllr Roy Brame said, “It’s an honour to be Mayor during this year of remembrance. It’s a proud day for Thetford to be part of the RBL Norfolk torch tour. To the generations that follow today, I hope you won’t be asked to make the ultimate sacrifice, please remember and do not forget them.” Thetford has had its branch of the RBL since July 1921 and was one of the first towns to do so in the UK. The Thetford branch is responsible for organising the Remembrance Parade and service each year on the Market Place. November - Time To Review The Year November is a good month to review the past year's successes and problems and, as usual, the most important factor was the weather. Although we grumbled about the coldness of the Spring conditions, that kept the blossom from opening too early on fruit trees. In the end they set fruit so well it was necessary to take off a large number to encourage a good size. Then the heat and dryness had its own problems – lethal for lawns unless they were watered. It is now a matter of interest to watch them returning to normal – perhaps even improved with a bit of extra attention. On the plus side, how magnificent the African marigolds were and how well the Cosmos recovered once there was a little rain. These are 'musts' for the garden next year!

From now till March you can plant bare rooted roses and other bushes and trees. Doing so early lets them develop roots before the frosts set in. If you cannot spend the time planting them in their final position as soon as they arrive, heel them in to give some protection from frost and also to prevent the roots drying out completely. Fallen leaves will keep blowing in from other people's gardens for a while yet. Once they are wet, they stick together in a thick layer which stops the light. This is fine on bare earth but will kill grass, especially if you have fresh shoots coming from seed. So rake the leaves up for the compost heap and you protect the lawn as well as increase the compost to use next Spring. Leaves round the base of plants like roses can harbour pests so ideally remove these too. If you have apples in store check the fruit every time you fetch some into the house. With the fruit set out on trays, at least any problem is easy to spot and remove. What a wonderful smell there is from sound apples.

If you have any conkers left from picking up the shiny nuts in September, you can (apparently) use these to discourage spiders. I think it is the smell rather than the appearance so a little heap is supposed to drive the scuttling creatures back outside. Personally, I think spiders do a good job in catching flies but I know some people have a real phobia about them. Even so, I think everyone enjoys the sight of the webs covered with dew in the Autumn especially when the sun catches the drops of dew - better than any man-made decoration! This a good month to clear up the garden but think about some protection for your hands and eyes. Time To Listen It might sound strange but most birdwatchers probably use their ears whilst out birdwatching as much as they use their eyes. Most will have heard of the dawn chorus that can be heard daily from mid-March to early June; at this time birds are in full song and a walk in the forest can resound with the songs of a dozen or more different types of song bird, but of course that is during the spring. Not many birds sing during the autumn and winter months, there really is no need as they don’t have a territory to defend, or, with the breeding season long gone, a mate to attract. There are a few species that can be heard singing right now, Robin is the most obvious and can be heard late into the night singing beneath the artificial light of a lamppost. If there are few birds singing, why might now be a time to listen? All birds have a distinctive song, that of the Robin is a high-pitched, thin reedy melancholy song, whilst that of the Wren, which will also occasionally sing at this time of the year, is a loud explosion of sharp, warbling notes that finishes in a stuttering machine-gun like rattle. All birds also have distinctive calls too, the Robin’s is a short, sharp, ‘tic’ and the Wren’s a low pitched ‘churr’ but there is one bird that it is really worth listening out for right now, and that is the Redwing. The Redwing is a member of the thrush family that breeds in Scandinavia but departs there as the weather turns colder; crossing the North Sea to spend the winter months in a relatively balmy Britain. Being on the east coast, East Anglia is well placed to receive these Nordic wanderers. Redwings migrate in flocks and utter a distinctive flight call as they fly overhead, probably as a mechanism for keeping in contact with the rest of the flock. The Redwing flight call is a thin, high-pitched, drawn-out ‘tseep’, and whilst this can be heard from

Redwings as they move around during daylight hours, most Redwings migrate at night. During cloudy nights Redwings can be heard on migration just above our rooftops and it is worth getting out into the garden, or local green space, an hour or so after dusk to listen for them. October and early November is the best time to do so, and don’t forget the amazing journey these birds are undertaking. 100th Birthday Celebrations For RSPCA Man Jim Jim was born on the 18th October 1918 in Cromer overlooking the pier, his parents were entertainers and Jim lived with a succession of foster parents in various localities. Later he became a boarder at Manor House School, Clapham Common. With his school days over by 1935, Jim chose to train for two years in at Chadacre Agricultural College near Stowmarket. During WW2 Jim joined the Essex Regiment and spent the entire six years of WWI2 overseas with no home leave. Jim was part of troop movements that secured Iraq and Egypt for the Allies, and then took part in the second wave to liberate Italy. The war finally drew to a close and he found it a relief to come back to Britain. After a reunion with his mother, Jim, wearing a demob suit, scythed grass to earn money during his on-foot passage back to Suffolk. Returning to a farming family that Jim had known in Stowmarket led to a job on the land. There he met and married Pamela, and gained the stability of a home life for the first time. A number of jobs followed, culminating with management of the Poultry Farm near Cambridge. The family grew to include Roy and Susan and always, a cat. Jim was always keen on animal welfare, he decided to retrain and became an inspector in the RSPCA, arriving in Thetford in 1960.

Jim was an inspector through the rapid expansion of Thetford and despite the many changes it still remains his favourite place to live after nearly 60 years. At the age of 40 Jim took up Yoga, eventually becoming a Yoga instructor at the Breckland Leisure Centre and in his house until he was over ninety. Jim can still touch his toes today and enjoys a few self-led Yoga sessions each week. When asked what Jim’s secret to a long and happy life is, his daughter Susan said, “Jim has always spent his time keeping fit, not smoking, apart from when the services encouraged him to in the War, eating healthily and always being occupied physically and mentally.” For over 35 years Jim led an active retirement tending to his garden and an allotment by the railway station. Jim’s former hobby of butterfly collecting later changed to butterfly conservation, breeding and releasing quantities of Peacocks, Red Admirals and Tortoiseshells across Breckland. Appreciating that he needed a little extra help with day to day living, Jim chose to move into Red House in 2017; enjoying the care he receives. He is often heard singing show songs, especially in the morning. To celebrate Jim’s birthday a party was orgainsed by staff at Red House. Brindley and Hume created a street party theme, several of his former yoga students joined in and local RSPCA Officers presented Jim with an Outstanding Service award. Red House also presented Jim with a butterfly design garden bench in honour of Jim and his lifelong passion for butterflies. Speaking about Jim’s 100th birthday Sue Baker from Randale Care said, “It felt like a real privilege to be able to be a part of Jim’s day and an honour to help him celebrate. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed to making it so special.”

Thetford Rotary and Rotary@CBC News Thetford Rotary Club has been established for many years in the town and meets 3 times a month, at varying times of day to suit different work patterns. Recently the Club held a “Learn About Rotary” evening, open to members of the public and guests of members. The even was an opportunity for people to find out more about Rotary International and what the club offers at a local level. Showcasing the latest intiative from the club were members of Rotary@CBC, the new satelite club based at the Charles Burrell Centre. The current President of the Club John Gallen welcomed everyone and encouraged guests to explore the displays showing different facets of Rotary, giving guests the opportunity to find out about the fellowship and the charitable activities undertaken by Rotary, locally, nationally and internationally. Continuing the theme of fellowship, coupled with internationalism, the meeting in early October was held at Thetford Raj where everyone enjoyed a great meal. For more information or to join please email: secretary@thetfordrotary.org Thetford Rotary Club are also supporting Rotary @CBC’s first fundraising event in aid of Thetford Foodbank, Race Night on November 9th. Old Skool Bar and Aya Cuisine are providing food and drink, and the tote will be run by Thetford Rotary Club. If your horse comes in you stand the chance to winning a share of 50% of the pot, with the remaining 50% going to Thetford Foodbank. “We’ve hosted Race Nights like this in the past and it’s a really fun way to raise money for a charity. People can even join in by becoming a jockey” explained Rotarian Gary Goodchild. Event organiser and Chair of Rotary@CBC Karen-Emma White said, “We can’t thank our sponsors enough for their support. With the introduction of Universal Credit we know that the Foodbank will be facing an unprecedented demand on their service and wanted to help.” Races have been sponsored by The Mulberry, Party Poppers, Simon Long Removals, Thetford Business Forum, East Anglian Swift Transport, Mark Skinner Funeral Service and Thetford Rotary Club with prizes sponsored by Lovewell Blake and Shadwell. We meet at 11.15am in the Williamson Hall of Thetford Grammar School to rehearse carols and Christmas songs, the familiar and the new, and prepare for an afternoon singing in residential homes across Thetford. After a party tea, we end the day with a concert in St Cuthbert’s Church (6.30pm - 7.15pm) for families, friends and other guests. And this year there is more. We have been invited to sing at the Farmers’ Market at Wyken Vineyard, Stanton the next morning (Saturday 22nd December). Thetford Society Our monthly evening meeting began with a brief summary of issues across the town, notably the reduced water flow on the river which is particularly notable around the Coffee Mill and Kiosk. Our speaker for October was Roger Pugh who spoke on ‘Uncle Sam’s roots in Eastern England’. Roger began with an explanation of America’s first flag which had the Union Flag in the corner with 13 alternate red and white stripes symbolising the original 13 British colonies. For a country which was about to enter into a war of independence, this may seem a little odd. That is until we realised that in the early days, the colonies were largely populated by British citizens bound by blood and culture, they referred to themselves as colonials. Even the new national anthem was actually a modified English tune, that with different lyrics was a popular drinking song. So, who from this region influenced the fledgling country? Jamestown is regarded as the birthplace of America and was designed by Bartholomew Gosnold from Ottley Hall in Suffolk; his wife Martha Judd, came from Bury St Edmunds. On his second trip to what later became known as New England he died within four months and was buried overlooking the sea back to his birthplace. The Pilgrim Fathers were Puritans who were trying to escape the different religious views in England. They were originally from the Boston, Gainsborough area (both names remain on the other side of the Atlantic). Over 100 years after the Mayflower, our own Thomas Paine came to the fore when he arrived just in time for the revolution and his pamphlet “Common Sense” was read or recited to almost every rebel at that time. Roger told us of many other fascinating links which we do not have the space to discuss here. Roger’s previous book ‘The most secret place on earth’ is available to purchase at Leaping Hare in Thetford.

Thetford Society Next Event At 7.15pm on Tuesday 6th November 2018 at the United Reformed Church on Earl Street, we will listen to Fred Wickens, who has made ropes and swags for royalty. New members are always welcome at our meetings, we look forward to seeing you then. Only £2.00 for non-members.

Probus AGM Combines With Member’s Talk At Thetford Probus Club’s AGM in October a healthy balance in its finances was reported, albeit slightly down on the previous year, so there is no change to the membership annual subscription. Chairman Nigel King was delighted to introduce a new member who was a former RAF colleague, but concerns were expressed about a general decline in membership and efforts to try and boost numbers is now a priority. After the formal business of the AGM was concluded, member John Hobday-Pepper spoke about his job as Technical Director of Omar Park & Leisure Homes before he retired in 2017. He explained the highly efficient production line process at the firm’s Brandon headquarters and Hull subsidiary. 372 staff work at Brandon making it one of the biggest employers in the area. A further 68 staff are employed at the Hull factory. Bringing together the many different components needed to build a home is a complex task and requires many specialist skills, but the result is 15 completed homes and lodges a week. The speaker illustrated his talk and showed the range of homes and lodges all luxuriously equipped, and fully furnished, matching anything conventionally built homes have to offer. He explained that the buildings were transportable and relocatable incorporating wheels. Once installed on residential or leisure parks they are designed for permanent use. As to the cost of the homes, Mr Hobday-Pepper said that prices varied due to the customers’ specifications and the size of a home which could be up to 1450 square feet of sheer luxury. Members of the audience might well have been excused from thinking why homes constructed in this way couldn’t help solve the shortage of affordable housing, the speaker will cover this topic in a future talk.

New Opening Hours at Thetford Library Norfolk Library and Information Service are working on a project to widen access to library materials, public computers and quiet, creative spaces to meet or study even while the building is unstaffed, making your library available at times that are convenient for you. A system to allow self-service customer access, called Open Libraries has been installed in a number of libraries, including Thetford Library. This system will be installed in more libraries over the coming months. If you have a full adult library card, you can apply to use the library in these periods by talking to a member of staff. Once you have registered, you will be able to scan your library card and type your PIN into the access point near the library entrance. Only cards belonging to people 16 and over can be granted access, although children can of course go along if accompanied by an adult. Items can still be borrowed to take home from the self-service machines. Access to Thetford Library is now available via Open Libraries: Monday to Friday 8am - 7pm, Saturday 8am4pm and Sunday 10am - 4pm. Staff will continue to be available Monday to Friday 10am-7pm and Saturday

Thetford Library on Raymond Street

10am-4pm. Ask staff at your local library to see if it is an open library and enjoy the benefits of visiting when it suits you best.

Book Sale

Thetford Library will be hosting a week-long book sale from the 19th to 24th November. People can stock up on their holiday reads, discover an affordable classic, or find a book which will teach them how to learn a new skill or language. Breckland Cats Protection Ticks love the autumn weather! However, unlike fleas – which largely cause skin irritations in cats and their owners, ticks can also carry a range of serious infectious diseases. Ticks can be found in long grasses and wooded areas, especially where there is wildlife such as deer and hedgehogs. They attach using mouthparts and will feed on blood from their host for several days before dropping off. Ticks can cause Local tissue reactions where redness and swelling appears at the attachment site. They can also spread diseases which pose serious health risks to pets and humans: • Lyme disease, also called borreliosis, is spread by ticks. Affected pets (and also humans) can develop swollen joints and stiffness. They can also develop a fever, anorexia and lethargy. In some cases, the disease causes life-threatening kidney disease. • Babesiosis (caused by Babesia Canis) is an emerging tick-borne disease, which destroys red blood cells and causes acute signs of anaemia in affected dogs. • Erlichiosis also attacks red blood cells and can be fatal. Current evidence suggests that tick-borne diseases aren’t transmitted until hours after attachment, so using a product that rapidly kills or repels ticks will help to reduce the risk of these diseases. No tick product is 100% effective however, so cats should be checked regularly and any ticks found should be removed with a special tick remover. Never pull a tick out, as the body will detach and the head will stay in the skin and cause a nasty reaction. Your vet can advise you on keeping your cat safe from tick-borne diseases.

while fleas are in decline outside, they are quite happy to live in our centrally heated homes! Keep up with your regular protection and do check with your vet that it covers all the right beasties! Firework night is fast approaching which can cause anxiety for our pets. Even seemingly relaxed pets might display subtle signs such as yawning, panting, restlessness and hiding. Preparation is key! Coping with fireworks takes planning and preparation before and during the event. Many pets will benefit from calming supplements such as plug-in diffusers. In severe cases, anxiety relieving sedative medicines can be used to reduce a pet's fear response and help them to be calm and settled. On the night, keep cats inside to help prevent them getting injured or lost. Closing the curtains and playing calming music or keeping the television switched on may also be helpful.

Rebellious Sisterhood Performance Hailed A Success Broad Horizons Theatre Company brought their play Rebellious Sisterhood - Votes for Women to the Carnegie Rooms Thetford on Thursday 4th October. The play took us through the final years of Emmeline Pankhurst (played by Shirley Day) and a rare glimpse behind the scenes at the private lives and the personal cost paid by the leaders of the Suffragettes. Having experienced the fabulously talented Kiara Hawker’s acting skills (this time playing young firebrand, Grace Roe) before as part of Thetford Festival, I was really looking forward to seeing this play and it did not disappoint on any level. The whole team took us on a journey and had the appreciative audience enthralled from start to finish. The ability to ask questions of the writer Karen Forbes, Director Cordelia Spence and Judi Daykin (who played Ethel Smyth, composer and friend of Emmeline Pankhurst) afterwards was the icing on the cake.

Lionesses Celebrate 30th Anniversary The Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses welcomed The Mayor and Mayoress of Thetford and guests from 12 Lioness and Lions Clubs to join them to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of their Certification. Six of the original members were able to join in the special day. A delicious meal was enjoyed at the Thetford Golf Club, followed by an interesting talk from Jason Middleton, who welcomed guests on the history and qualities of ‘A Pearl, a famous Gem’. Over the years the Lionesses have held many fundraising events that have benefitted both local and national charities. These have included the annual ‘Winter Warmer and Pudding Quiz’ evenings, the selling of knitted Easter and Christmas novelties and cake stalls. Most recently a very successful Autumn Flower Demonstration Evening was held which raised over £400. The money the Lionesses have raised has enabled them to make donations to many worthy appeals. These have included £500 to Blood Bikes, a charity that transports blood and other needed specimens between hospitals, and £1500 to Hope for Tomorrow, a charity that has specially adapted buses that provide support and treatment for cancer patients. Thetford is fortunate to have visits from such a bus. The Lionesses support ‘Clowns in the Sky’ which is an appeal to support children with brain tumours at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. After initially funding a trolley containing craft equipment and activities for the Specialist Ward they now give an annual donation to restock the trolley. The club’s target to mark their 30th year was to raise £4000 to sponsor a Medical Detection Puppy through its first year of training. They were delighted to report at their Anniversary Celebration that this target had been achieved.

Would you like a Maid to Clean your home?

In addition, at the celebration, Lioness President Dorothy presented a cheque for £500 to Multiple District Lioness Chairman Jeanette for her charity ‘Tiny Tickers’. This charity aims to improve the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of babies with heart disease. Currently the Lionesses are supporting the local Matthew Project, which helps the rehabilitation of alcohol and drug users as well as the homeless, by providing household items including blankets, crockery, and toiletries. They continue to collect rags and exchange them for money and also to recycle spectacles. Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses also held a successful MacMillan Coffee Morning at Kings Court, Thetford recently. A selection of home-made cakes and tea or coffee was enjoyed by the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Thetford, Kings Court residents as well as members of the public. A total of £161.79 was raised which will be donated to MacMillan Care. The Thetford (Breckland) Lionesses meet on the 2nd and 4th Monday of the month at Kings Court, Earl Street. Hair Removal And Skin Rejuvenation In A Flash! This November is a good time to start upon permanent hair removal and or skin rejuvenation treatments. Most holidays are a memory, and tans are fading, which for our particular treatment, is important. We are offering free consultations and patch tests during November between 5th-17th for both hair removal and skin rejuvenation. It’s important the clients tan is not active as this affects the effectiveness of the treatment. During the treatment we recommend wearing sunscreen SPF 30 on the area, as it can make the skin sensitive to sunlight. We use Ellipse Intense Pulse Light (IPL) which destroys the root of the hair using flashes of light. The hairs fall out a week to 10 days later and the process is repeated approx 4-6 weeks later to treat new hairs that have grown through. Most clients need between 6-8 treatments. No need to let the hairs grow long, they actually need to be as short as possible to allow the energy to go directly into the root of the hair. All areas can be treated such as facial hair, legs, under arms, forearms, backs, bikini area, we treat both men and women and have several transgender clients,

Lots Happening At Thetford Inner Wheel At their October meeting the club was enthralled hearing of the travels of Fiona Witton. Based in Ecuador as a teacher she travelled, during her holidays, to Peru, Chile, Argentina and even found a train cemetery in Bolivia! Her photographs were amazing showing wonderful scenery and the magnificent colours of South America. It was decided at the meeting to send £200 from the charity account to the DEC fund for the Indonesian Tsunami disaster. Members also collected donations for Thetford Foodbank which is very short of supplies. Last month some members went on a trip to Riga with Thetford Rotary. A most enjoyable time was had in a town full of museums, restaurants, galleries, churches and cobbled paths. They left before the weekend stag parties arrived!! Finally plans were put in place for an Armistice Day lunch on November 18th. Limited tickets available from 01842 754526. At a coffee morning held at a member’s home over £200 was made for funds.

Too busy?

Pigmentation patches can also be treated and usually only need 2-3 treatments. It’s also great for fine lines and wrinkles as it makes the skin produce its own collagen and elastin. During November we are offering pay for 5 IPL treatments and get the 6th free. Treatments must be paid in advance and all for the same area.

Peter Reflects On 37 Year Career It was 1981 when a young 18 year old Peter Wade started working in Genesis a hair salon opposite St Cuthbert’s Church and upstairs from The Wool Shop. Shortly after starting his hairdressing course at King’s Lynn College and his Saturday job at Genesis, the salon was bought by the John Oliver Group and Peter started his 37 year career with the company. Peter has now been a partner in the business for 22 years and has been in his current salon in Guildhall Street for 15 years. “It’s been interesting. Hair styles always change and every day is different,” Peter explained, “It’s nice to get to know people and shape their hair.” Peter says that he doesn’t have a favourite decade in terms of hair styles, “I enjoyed all the styles at the time, I look back with fondness at some of things I’ve done, fashion should be right for the moment, occasionally you look back and wonder why you’d dress like that, but at the time it was a trend.” Today the Thetford salon is one of 7 in the John Oliver group across Norfolk and Suffolk. The salon is bright and welcoming, fully accessible on one floor with a team of 4. Stylists Peter and Tracey, with assistants Ricky and Lorraine, are on hand to ensure every client has a pleasurable experience. Peter continued; “What we specifically do is to have a full consultation with everyone when they come in. We find out what they want, or what they’d like us to do and also give recommendations. I hand choose the brands we want to work with, I’ve worked with KMS for styling products and Goldwell for colouring for many years.” John Olivers Thetford pride themselves on offering precision cutting, expert colouring and perming. They also offer an ammonia free colouring service, kerastraight hair smoothing treatment and patch tests 48 hrs before new treatments. Peter said: “We’re always pleased to see new and old faces, we keep an eye on the latest trends and what’s happening online, in magazines and on tv but we like to keep it real so people can look after their styles themselves at home.” For more info call John Olivers on 01842 763145.

Consultation Open On Closure Of Thetford Children’s Centres Parents, grand-parents and concerned members of the local community are being urged to take part in a Norfolk County Council consultation regarding children’s centres after plans for their closure were announced. Last month it was revealed that due to budget cuts both Thetford children’s centres may be forced to close along with 44 others across Norfolk. That would leave just 6 centres in the whole county with the nearest to Thetford being located in Attleborough. The Council has launched a consultation about the closures which is open until the 12th November, which can be accessed by visiting; https://norfolk.citizenspace.com/

Wretham Harvest Celebrations Around 50 villagers and visitors enjoyed the annual Harvest Supper in the Village Hall, organised by the church at Wretham but aimed at anyone wanting a bargain night’s food and fun. It included five hot dishes, with accompaniments, followed by a choice of sweets and hot drinks. Thanks came from the Rev Tony Heywood at the end of an evening where a non profit making fiver a head function still turned a profit for church funds of over £250 – largely due to chefs seeking no recompense for their work! Abrey Farms had provided baking potatoes for the night and also boxes of vegetables to boost the decoration in St Ethelbert for the following morning’s Harvest Thanksgiving service led by the Rev Nigel Ransom in a building filled with flowers by Sara Banham. The congregation paid into church funds to take away vegetables, with the remainder being delivered to an appreciative John Room House in Thetford after the weekend.

Since before the great days of steam engineering, Thetford has had a reputation for growing engineering and manufacturing businesses and developing people and their skills in the sector. Calling All Muddy Obstacle Runners! The East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) has now opened entries for their 2019 super-gruelling, super-muddy obstacle course challenge. The ever popular event at Elveden Estate is set to take place on Sunday 7th April 2019, and provides both a 6 and 10 mile course, with 20-35 obstacles, lots of mud, slides, straw bales and challenging hurdles. The charity will be offering an early-bird rate until the 30th November so get your entries in quick to secure your place. EAAA is a charity providing a life-saving helicopter emergency medical service for the people of East Anglia, and this event is an exhilarating way to get involved with raising funds. The Only The Brave (OTB) challenge is now in its fourth year, and has grown every year with last year’s event hosting 1,650 racers, who all helped raise funds for the charity. EAAA is asking for each racer to try and raise just £50 each – this would make a phenomenal difference to the life-saving care they provide. This obstacle course really is for everyone and hosts competitive runners sprinting for the time, people who want to have a fun team day out with their friends or work colleagues, people who want to set themselves a challenge and run their first race to people who want to just take part in a fun event. Catrina Miller, Events Manager for EAAA said; “We are so proud that every year Only The Brave continues to grow, and people come back every year and support the event. We take on feedback every year and tried to make the event bigger and better. This time we are running waves an hour apart to keep up with demand for spaces. We are so excited for the 2019 event and can’t wait to see lots of new and returning faces. Can we say a big thank you to Breakwater IT and Lovewell Blake who have once again chosen to sponsor the event, we can’t wait to see you all racing again.

Participants of the 2018 Only The Brave event

The early-bird rate running until the 30th November provides several options ranging from £25 upwards. Every entry will receive an OTB official t-shirt, a medal and a goody bag when they finish the course. There are also plenty of opportunities for sponsorship and other ways to get involved with the event.

Boxing Club Unveils New Minibus Following the successful opening of their club in April 2016, Thetford Town Boxing Club heads into the new season with high hopes after its recent minibus fundraising was a success. The club has now taken delivery of its new minibus complete with club livery. The club minibus is an essential item to enable the team to travel far and wide, and has already taken boxers to Ipswich for sparring events. Donations flooded in from many sponsors to make this happen including Tesco Bags Of Help scheme, Old Skool Bar, Graham Russell, Mr & Mrs Dyson and Mr Cooper. In two years the club has continued to develop and now has a thriving Junior and Senior section and three ABAE qualified coaches. Speaking about the club, Head Coach Matthew Dean said, “I do believe that Thetford has needed a place like this for a long time to get the kids off the streets. We’ve also had a big Eastern European interest, so I hope it’ll bring the different communities together as well. Once we are in here we are all a team.”

Winter Is Coming! The nights are closing in sooner, the clocks have just changed and the temperature has dropped – winter is coming! I dislike winter. It’s not a season I look forward to, mainly because when you wake up it’s dark, cold and wet outside, you end up spending extra time in bed and what normally suffers because of that extra few moments of warmth and comfort is your training session! It’s this time of year where motivation lacks, we start enjoying more wholesome meals which are filling and warming and we dive under a blanket or duvet at any chance we get! Our training regime will often change too. If you’re used to getting out there with the elements, winter can really dampen your experience! Not only do you run the risk of injury but cold weather training can also lead to hypothermia. It’s advisable to change or add clothing after training. If you hang about for a chat after, definitely take extra layers in to consideration as the body cools down.

Netball Club Benefits From Lottery Our Breckland Lottery is helping Thetford Netball Club encourage more people to turn to this fast-paced game. The team is using money raised through ticket sales to support fundraising efforts for new equipment and coaching courses. As a registered ‘good cause’ with the Breckland Council initiative, the Club are now receiving 50p from every £1 ticket sold to their supporters. Thetford Netball club was first formed just over 20 years ago, with the past 10 years seeing the club membership soar and success on the court matching their high ambitions. Currently there are 4 senior teams and 3 junior teams playing in multiple leagues, with more players joining up every week. The club has 2 senior teams in the Norwich UEA winter Netball League in Divisions 1 and newly promoted to 5 this season. They have 2 senior teams in the West Suffolk Winter league. The Our Breckland Lottery was set up earlier this year and gives players a chance to win up to £25,000 every Saturday. The club is planning to use funds raised through lottery ticket sales on purchasing more training equipment. “Replacing training balls as well as updating fitness equipment is really essential for a club rapidly expanding like ours,” commented a club spokesperson. “The extra funds raised via Our Breckland Lottery will also help to put our coaches through training workshops and develop their coaching qualifications, which will ensure all of our players receive even better coaching experiences. As well as our success for our senior teams in various local leagues, our Junior players have taken part in Nation Club competitions.

Parkrunner Of Month - November Lucas has just turned 15 and is in year 11 studying for his GCSE exams and is one of our youngest registered members who has actually never run or walked a parkrun. Lucas first spectated at Fountains Abbey parkrun in Ripon, during a family break, Easter 2017. Kate, Lucas's mother introduced Lucas to the parkrun team to volunteer as part of his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Lucas started volunteering on the 30th September 2017 and now has volunteered 28 times. Lucas has completed majority of the volunteering tasks, from marshalling on the course, to timekeeping, scanning participants when they finish and handling out their finishing tokens. On New Years Day, Lucas completed a double volunteer takeover by volunteering at both Thetford and Brandon parkruns. Lucas will be continuing to volunteer towards his silver award and is going to start training towards becoming a Run Director. This will make him one of the youngest parkrun directors in the parkrun UK group.

https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/ lucasmeasures1 We asked Lucas why he has never run or walked the 5k course and he says he just simply hasn't wanted to do it but one day he will get round to it. If anyone would like to volunteer please contact the parkrun team at: thetfordhelpers@parkrun.com

During 2018 Lucas and the 1st Ixworth Scout Group completed a volunteer takeover at parkrun, covering all of the volunteer roles. They did a brilliant job and after parkrun they held a cake sale raising funds towards his trip to the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia in 2019. Lucas is still raising for his trip and if anyone can support him by donating at:
