Amnesty International’s ‘I Welcome’ Exhibition Hits Home This September Thetford’s own dedicated branch of Amnesty International celebrated a successful exhibition displayed across the town’s key locations, including the Charles Burrell Centre, Thetford Library, and several prominent local churches. Striking and emotive, the exhibition saw a great turn-out and left a lasting impression on those who came out to see it. With subjects spanning over 70 years, the photographs explore the lives of refugees past and present escaping their war-torn neighbourhoods, housed in uncertainty, desperately trying to grant their children normal lives.

Thetford Grammar School welcomed the exhibition, allocating an evening for students and parents to experience the display alongside an arrangement of books of a similar theme; even going as far as incorporating the images into their classrooms to help pupils gain an understanding of the reality and magnitude of the refugee crisis.

As a town with a large migrant population, the exhibition held significance in Thetford. Chairman of Amnesty Thetford, Simon John: “I was pleased that the exhibition was shown so widely in Thetford. We are privileged in the West to live in an era of relative peace. This exhibition opened our eyes to the suffering endured by those forced to flee from the bombs we in the West made and dropped upon them." The free photographic exhibition, neatly crossing paths with World Peace Day, tackled the ongoing refugee crisis with a candid yet cultivated approach, taking the audience on a journey through thirty unforgettable images of a world-wide, timeless struggle for safety and settlement. Made up of photographs from the renowned international collective Magnum, the exhibition also offers a free audio guide, read by Amnesty International UK Ambassador Juliet Stevenson.

The exhibition appeals to our human instinct, daring us to picture our own sons, daughters, elderly relatives, or indeed ourselves in such states of peril. It achieves this by portraying refugees at their most human; children playing amongst rubble with make-shift toys; the faces of those whose lives have been devastated by war before backdrops of smoke and debris; communities caravanning together. In the past 2 years the UK has offered refuge to 168,937 people, while the small country of Jordan has welcomed 2.8 million people. Those interested in becoming a part of Amnesty Thetford are invited to sign-up and join the meetings - these take place monthly in The Bell Hotel, King St, Thetford, IP24 2AZ. The exact dates of meetings can be found on the Amnesty Thetford Facebook page.

Manager at Thetford Library, Kayleigh Garrod said: “One of the images that particularly struck me as a young person, was of dozens of mobile phones being recharged on the go - suggesting how what is today treated by young people as an everyday tool of life, is inaccessible to people for long periods at a time."

generously providing all the pumpkins. With 250 pumpkins on order, let us hope there is enough for everyone!

Brandon Country Park’s Pumpkin Fest started life as a project with IES Breckland School, Brandon. In 2015, Year-10 pupils planted a pumpkin patch in the park’s historic Walled Garden. They tended the patch throughout the year and were then set the task of deciding how to best use the patch come Autumn. Full of imagination they decided on a Festival, with pumpkin carving, a scary trail, theatre and music. Now in its 3rd year Pumpkin Fest has grown to involve other community groups in Brandon, including Shoestring Theatre, Face-It painting and Brandon Tesco’s, who are

Charles Burrell Centre to House ‘Community Business Weekend’ On Friday 6th of October, the Charles Burrell Centre will be taking part in the nationwide ‘Community Business Weekend’. Launched by ‘Power to Change’, the initiative has attracted 150 community businesses across the country and is designed to promote and support valuable organisations making a difference to their local community. One of the more creative uses of space at Charles Burrell Centre: Sign-makers West Brothers Ltd renting the former swimming pool

A free coffee morning, which will also serve as an open day for CBC, will be taking place from 10am-12pm to provide visitors with an opportunity to tour the site and meet the tenants and organisations that have made CBC their home. In the last 3 years alone, Charles Burrell Centre has seen 26 businesses establish themselves in its functional and versatile spaces. The affordable rates offer an essential stepping-stone for small business to find their footing, develop cliental and store products, while the online social media presence – such as #TenantTuesday – allows businesses to build rapport with the public. Amongst the businesses enjoying CBC is ‘Hats Don’t Sell’, who are able to launch their business and build cash flow before establishing themselves in high-cost retail space. Also with the space available at CBC, Liberty Christian Church, who initially struggled to find a premise for their FoodBank, have been able to provide 20,000 meals per year to those suffering from homelessness or insecure housing by working out of their studio - providing ample room for storing donations and constructing a soup kitchen.

Out & About Thetford

New networking group opens The first meeting of the Thetford Bizmums group was held at the early in September at the Grand Central Restaurant at Anchor Place. A group of 15 local ladies came together to exchange ideas and develop their businesses. Each participant was given a goodie bag to take away and allowed to introduce their business to the group. The businesses represented varied from Health Professionals, legal services, publishing, clothing to confectionary. With over 80 meetings across the UK and 10 around Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire, Bizmums enables working mums to develop industry networks. The new Thetford group is hosted by Billie Lawler who organises the monthly meeting and speaker. CBC Manager Mark Snowdon presented a talk about the success of rebranding a former school into a business and community hub alongside using social media marketing. The group meets at 9.30am on the first Tuesday of every month at Grand Central. For more information on Bizmums or how to join the Thetford Jen Pickering and Billie Lawler group contact Billie on bkins1971@googlemail.com Red Lion book launch Local historian David Osborne was joined by an enthusiastic group of Thetfordians, friends and family for the launch of his latest book. The Red Lion is the third in his series about Thetford’s Inns, Pubs and Beerhouses. Speaking about his new book David said, “There’s been all sorts of activities going on in the Red Lion and Red Lion Yard for many years. In 1890 a great new invention of the time, Edison’s Phonograph was demonstrated here. It was the first time a lot of people in Thetford had heard a recording of the spoken voice.” David went on to give a brief history of the Red Lion to an enthralled audience. Toward the end of his speech he said, “One thing that researching and studying local history has taught me and made me appreciate is just how much change is an inevitable part of life, and very little appears to standstill for very long.” David then told the audience that 45 years ago he met his wife Joy in the Red Lion. “It was a completely different place then, the room we were in was the lounge bar with carpet and flocked wallpaper. It was very posh!” David then thanked George Angus who worked as a carpenter on the Boughton refurbishment in the late 1950s and gave John Atkins with enough information to have a plan drawn of the Red Lion pre 1960. Local artist Christine Sanderson created a drawing of the Red Lion for the book and long-standing collaborators Sarah and Stuart Wilson, Graham Jacobs and Trevor Bowden helped with editing, photography and publishing. David also thanked the manager of The Red Lion, Matt Colman, for hosting the launch before presenting the Mayor, Cllr Dennis Crawford with the first copy. “If anyone would like to write a story or history, all I can say is go for it!”. The Red Lion is available from Leaping Hare, King L to R: Matt Colman, David Osborne and Mayor of Thetford Cllr Dennis Crawford Street, Thetford. Hotel hosts KSFL relaunch A new Kick Start Fat

Loss menu has been created at the Thomas Paine Hotel. Michelle Jermy from the Core Studio who runs the KSFL programme, worked with the hotel to develop the new menu. Michelle discovered KSFL when she was researching a lactose free diet for a child. “Everything works for different people, it’s nutritious, using no processed food but there are plenty of quick and easy recipes that will rebalance your hormones and reset your body to help burn fat” Michelle explained. Thomas Paine Manager Lindsey Auburn said, “It’s a new venture that the hotel is very excited about, and it’s a great opportunity to work with Michelle and offer a well balanced fresh menu. The menu is available to everyone, all we ask is that you book in advance and let us know you want the KSFL menu as everything is prepared fresh. We also offer a discount for a large group booking, which is great if you are watching your weight but want to get together and enjoy a meal out.” KSFL works by changing eating habits alongside exercise. In one of her previous groups, Michelle had a lady who lost 2 1/2 stone in weight over 3 months using the food plan and attending a class. Another participant Claire, lost 5 stone on KSFL, “At first I made myself do it, I didn’t enjoy it but I wanted to get fitter. I couldn’t do hardly any of the exercise, but then it became routine. I did 20 minutes of exercise a day.” Claire now teaches classes at Core Studio and is joining Michelle as a KSFL Coach. For more information about Kick Start Fat Loss contact Michelle on michelle@michellejermyfitness.co.uk School celebrates another successful year For the second year running the Thetford Grammar School’s annual Speech Day was held at St Edmundsbury Cathedral. Guest speaker and prize presenter was current OTA President, Jim Bacon. Along with the school orchestra, talented pupils Henry Bittleston and James Robertson performed during the ceremony, Henry on the piano and James on the Cathedral organ. 25 pupils made speeches about the activities during the annual report including some of the younger pupils from the Prep School alongside their Senior school and Sixth Form peers. The Cathedral was packed full of pupils, parents, guests and past pupils who listened as meteorologist Jim spoke about embracing change but keeping traditions alive, “It is almost 50 years since I last attended Speech Day in a TGS uniform in Fulmerston Hall. My time at the school has shaped my career, the names you hear on the school prizes, Gordon Carter and Beales, are all teachers from my era. The feeling of belonging needs preserving, no matter how much it changes.” After encouraging pupils to join the OTA and maintain friendships forged at the school, Jim added “Congratulations everyone on another successful year for the school and I hope many more to come.”

Remembrance Sunday 2017 Preparations for the annual Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service in Thetford are now underway. The Royal British Legion - Thetford Branch would like local organisations such as civic societies, scouts, girl guiding and the emergency services to attend the annual Parade & Service on Sunday 12th November 2017. Groups interested in taking part should email the Parade Marshall: Waine47@btinternet.com

2016 Remembrance Parade by Maria Cooke

The parade will form up on the Tanner Street car park, to the rear of the former Argos store, and you are asked to be there no later than 10:10am to be formed up and ready to march off at 10:30am. All organizations should come prepared for cold and wet weather. The route for the Parade will be the same as last year, out of car park, right along Tanner Street, left up Well Street, around the roundabout, along Market Place and onto the Market Square. The Parade will be led by the Pipe Band.

Thetford Society At the beginning of September, the Thetford Society Annual General Meeting took place, there were the normal parish notices, followed by a more formal round up of the year’s events and happenings. The Committee were all re-elected and a couple of proposals were passed with majority support, the most notable being the £1.00 charge per member for each evening when there is a guest speaker. Unfortunately, this has come about due the rising costs of the speakers’ expenses, the room hire and magazine printing. It was felt that our magazine is such a quality item that we should continue to pay for it within the annual charge. The meeting fee will come into effect in January 2018 and will be reviewed at the next AGM. The evening was rounded off with a very enjoyable cheese and wine social. The Society are always happy to welcome new members, if you are new to Thetford or you are born and bred here and fancy an interesting evening out once a month then please feel free to come along and give us a try, you might just enjoy yourself! Over the coming months we will be hosting Jo Reynolds, Britain’s first female fire fighter, Rachel Duffield with a 1940’s song book, to Dr Paul Richards speaking of The Port and Merchants of Georgian Kings Lynn 1714 1830, so you can see we have a real mixed bag.

John Waine, Parade Marshall said: “I look forward to seeing you all once again and hope the weather is kind to us, the Royal British Legion will be holding an open day and the club is open to all for refreshments afterwards. I will be on the parade area from 8am on Sunday for any last minute queries.” Members of the public are also invited to join in the service, please gather around the edge of the market place by 10.30am. The annual Remembrance Service will also be taking place from 10.30am at the Cromwell Memorial at High Ash Picnic Site in Thetford Forest. The last post will be sounded at 11am by the Desert Rats Association Bugler Mr Bill Wells.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday 3rd October 2017 at 7.30pm at the United Reformed Church. On Saturday 7th October, there will be a charity quiz night at the Cloverfield Community Church in aid of the Thetford First Responders defibrillator fund. The doors will open at 6.30 and the quiz will begin at 7pm sharp (previously advertised timings were incorrect). Teams of 4, £5.50 per person to include cheese biscuits and table snacks, bring your own drinks. To register you team contact Pat 01842 752854 or Wendy 01842 755962.

Ask The Undertaker Q “My family is not religious. What alternative funeral services are available?” Peter, Thetford In answer to your question, below are a couple of possible options for you to consider for a non - religious funeral service. 1) A Humanist Officiant – this is someone who does not believe in any God and will conduct a service for you that will reflect this. 2) A Civil Funeral Celebrant – this is similar to the humanist approach, however Civil Celebrants do not bring an opinion of their own, they are there to reflect the wishes, beliefs and values of the deceased and of their family. Both options are very popular nowadays and both put together excellent tributes and services based upon the memories and reflections of family and friends. The services can include any favourite music, poems and readings that may be suitable, with the main part of the service being a really personal tribute to the deceased. For more information on alternative services please call our office, we will be happy to send you full details of all the local officiants and celebrants.

Mark Skinner - Our ‘Ask The Undertaker’ Columnist

If you have a question that you would like to ask Mark, please send it to: mark@mark-skinner.org.uk which we would suggest contacting the funeral director. We would normally then take your loved one into our care, this would usually mean that they are taken to our chapel of rest. At this time we can give you all the advice and support that you will need and remember everything we do is to suit you. So we can come straight away, but if you would prefer a bit of time before anything happens that is fine.

Q “I am worried that my Father, who lives on his own, will not be with us much longer. I visit him every day but am concerned about what I need to do should I discover he has passed away. Who do I need to contact and what process is involved?” Marjorie, Thetford.

With regard to registering a death, this usually needs to be done within 5 working days and usually at a registrar’s office within the County in which the death occurs. It is quite usual for the funeral director to liaise with the GP and Registrar so that everything runs smoothly and all necessary appoints are booked on your behalf. If you require more detailed information on what to do when a death occurs please visit our website www.markskinnerfunerals.org.uk where everything is explained.

I am sure that this is very difficult for you to think about, so it is good to be prepared. If you were to find that Dad had passed away at home the first people to contact would be his Doctors. They would usually attend to confirm that he has passed away, sometimes this may be done by the out of hours GP service, paramedics or “district nurses if his death was expected”. If the Doctor agrees to sign a death certificate, this is the point at

Thetford Inner Wheel

Wanted For U3A

In July, the incoming President, Jackie Clark, invited Inner Wheel members to afternoon tea at Lynford Hall. A very good afternoon was had by all with a delicious tea, but unfortuntatly the weather conspired against us and so a stroll in the grounds was not possible.

Every member of Thetford University of the Third Age would agree that they derive great pleasure from attending their various U3A activities. We learn new things, get better at others, meet interesting people and have fun. For many, Thetford U3A has been a life line. We are a charity run exclusively on the goodwill of many volunteers and this is where YOU, members, are WANTED! Many Trustees will soon come to the end of their term of office. It would be good if potential candidates could show an interest now in order to get acquainted with the different positions available. We need a pool of volunteers too that we can call upon to help out when necessary. Without YOU, YOUR U3A cannot run and believe me, you will get as much pleasure giving something back as you have taking it! Interested? Get in touch with one of the Trustees or come to our next monthly talk (Romany Life by Charlotte Paton) at the Carnegie on Thursday 26th October 1.45pm. (£2 for non-members payable at the door). We would love to have YOU on board! Visit the website for more info: www.thetfordu3a.org Christiane Banton, Thetford U3A Committee Member

The September meeting, being the first meeting of the year, was held at Wereham House where it was decided that £500 should be put towards a ShelterBox. ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity, founded by Helston Rotary Club, that provides temporary shelter and life saving supplies to displaced families. Each ShelterBox contains a tent designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, water purification kits, blankets and tools to help survival after a disaster, but the contents are adapted to suit the climate and area of disaster. They are distributed by teams working with local organisations, international aid agencies and Rotary clubs world wide. Liz Hodgson

Thetford Probus members could be excused for thinking they had been on the flight deck of an airliner after their most recent monthly talk by Captain Sean Manning (pictured)

The September Dinner Meeting was held at The Thomas Paine Hotel, Thetford, when our President Brian Farrell welcomed speaker Stephen Bell a Trustee from the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum.

As one of TUI (Thomson Holidays) most experienced pilots, Capt Manning took his audience on a tour of the aircraft he flies - the world’s best-selling Boeing 737. He explained the layout of all the key cockpit controls and instrumentation and how the 737 has evolved since it first took to the air in 1967. He pointed out that the latest version is bigger, quieter, more economic and has a greater range thanks to the use of materials such as carbon fibre and design innovation, notably the so-called winglets on the tips of the wings. As a pilot in Britain’s third biggest charter airline since 2000, Capt Manning said he had clocked up 11,000 hours of flying time. Before that he was an RAF fighter pilot with Honington and Marham, two of the local bases from which he flew. He spoke about the difference between airports and between Boeing and Airbus airliners. And, although he pointed out that computer systems and advanced technology were now at the heart of today’s aircraft, controlling systems, performing functions and providing navigational and weather information, pilots remained as indispensable as the many millions of passenger they fly safely to destinations around the world.

The Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum was first set up in 1961 in a field in Flixton loaned by the local pub, with aeroplane parts that had been found in the area and dating back to the second world war. The museum is run by volunteers and has regular visits from school groups eager to learn about aviation history and the first and second world wars. Over the years the museum has grown and become more and more popular with an ever growing range of aircrafts and aircraft paraphernalia. It is open Sunday to Thursday inclusive throughout the summer months and just three days a week during the winter months. The museum is in the process of expanding and building an extension to the training area with possible funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Our Story Project Brings The Community Together The Abbey Centre grooved to the sounds of the sixties recently as residents and invited guests enjoyed an exhibition by the art group based there. The exhibition and 1960s themed lunch was the culmination of the ‘Our Story’ project hosted by Keystone Development Trust. Funded by Heritage Lottery Fund, the project enabled the group to research their local heritage focussing on the Abbey Estate. Topics explored included Thetford Pulpware, stories from residents on the estate and collecting original images of the newly built estate. Youth worker Roni Dean and Abbey Centre Co-ordinator Alison Jueno both wore 60s themed costumes and Liam and Sophie from the Youth Café created a 1960s inspired buffet lunch. Guests included the Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Dennis Crawford who said he thoroughly enjoyed his lunch and talking to everyone. “I’ve learnt something new about Thetford’s history which is lovely!”

and St Albans. I was interviewed by John Kitson for the Thetford and Watton Times as my wife Esmé and I were forerunners, one of the first seven families to move here.” David moved to Thetford with Jeyes who remain in the town today and employed many of the Abbey estate residents. The exhibition also brought together a group of friends who hadn’t seen each other for 47 years. Pauline Barsby, Maureen Cunningham, Marion Maltwood and Jean Gardner (pictured, left hand column) were originally good friends who were part of the WI together and involved in the estate playgroup. Pauline moved to the estate in 1969, opening Barsby Butchers shop with her husband in York Way. “I remember the ‘Welcome to Thetford’ talks in the Guildhall, and the estate was lovely.” Jean who moved to Ripon Way was involved in the original playgroup set up on the estate. “We were given a house on Canterbury Way to use as it was before the community centre was built.” The ladies also remembered attending talks held by Jeyes in 196768, preparing them for the move to Thetford. Pauline continued, “It’s been great today, we enjoyed the lunch and catching up with people.” Maureen continued, “I’ve come over especially from Bury St Edmunds today, Abbey Garage AD.qxp_Layout 1 17/07/2017 14:36 Pag it’s been lovely to see so many people we knew in the photos.” Karen-Emma White

ABBEY GARAGE

The exhibition included stories from residents, paintings, embroidery, papier-mâché objects, collage, photographs, themed decorations and a VW campervan photo booth. One of the favourite displays was a map of the estate with images, recollections and business advertisements flags which prompted lots of ‘remember when’ comments! One of the residents keen to share his story was David Hutchenson who moved to the estate in early 1970, “There were only three roads built when I moved here, Ripon Way, Salisbury Way

Dementia Friendly Thetford The first steering group meeting to move Thetford into becoming a dementia friendly community has been arranged for Wednesday 4th October 2017 at 5.00pm, the meeting will be held in Thetford Town Council Chambers which are in Kings House on King Street.

The Old Rent Office King’s House, King Street THETFORD Norfolk. IP24 2AP

A dementia friendly community is one that is dementia aware but also aware of all the needs of vulnerable individuals, not just those living with dementia. Thetford and District Dementia Support group will be leading this initiative but, for it to be successful we need local businesses and community groups to get involved and be willing to support and promote Thetford as a dementia friendly town.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club If you have lived in another town you will really appreciate the number of mature trees in Thetford. One of the great places to enjoy them is King’s House Garden – a real haven right in the centre of the town. Now we have more information about the trees there in the form of a printed Tree Trail. You can pick up a free leaflet from King’s House which includes a map as well as some information about the trees and history of the house and gardens. The only downside of all the trees is how many leaves end up on your lawn. You’ll need to remove them before a layer gets established on top of the grass and weakens it. Remember to gather all that wonderful material for composting into leafmould. Leaves are rather dry material so take longer to compost, but are worth the wait. Borders will look better if they are tidied up and there will be fewer places for pests to overwinter too. Stack up dry and woody material to provide a hibernating place for a hedgehog who might eat up your slugs. Old canes can provide a sanctuary for ladybirds too, and ivy left to tumble over a wall will make a refuge for birds and insects. Now is the time to plant wallflowers, primulas and winter-flowering pansies as well as spring flowering bulbs. Some heathers are tough enough to flower even in the winter – just check the label of any purchases to be sure you are choosing those which tolerate lime in the soil unless you plan to put them in tubs of ericaceous or lime-free compost. On the allotment, you can start winter digging as crops are cleared from the ground. The rain and frost open up the soil during winter months so that new roots can make their way easily next year. If you have planned your planting for the next season, you could make a trench where beans are to be grown and fill this with waste material to rot down for the spring. Runner and climbing French beans need moist soil to sustain their rapid growth and even partly composted material can act as a sponge to hold water. If you are lucky enough to have apples to store over the winter, they are best kept in single layers so that one rotten fruit does not contaminate the others. The cardboard fruit trays given away free by supermarkets are perfect for this purpose

and their design allows for a good air flow even when they are stacked. A cool dark place is the ideal, so in the garage rather than the house. The sweet smell of apples in store is a late autumn pleasure in itself. Our meeting this month is on Thursday 26th October at 7.30pm in the United Reformed Church as usual. Our October speaker is Stuart Wright who will be talking about Thetford Past and Present. All are welcome. Sue Pilgrim

Cuckoos Really Are Amazing Birds During the last six years the British Trust for Ornithology have been following Cuckoos as they make their way to and from Africa, in order to find out if there might be pinch points on these trips that could be contributing to their decline here in the UK. We have lost almost half of our breeding Cuckoos during the last twenty-five years – and in England three-quarters of the population disappeared during the same period.

RUN AQU

We fitted cuckoos from East Anglia, northern and southern England, Scotland, and Wales with tiny satellite tags that track their every move. The tags transmit for ten hours before powering down for forty-eight hours to allow small solar panels on the upper surface of the tag to charge the batteries. So far, the project has discovered that British Cuckoos spend the winter in the Congo rainforest irrespective of where they were tagged. The cuckoos choose one of two migration routes out of the UK; one via Italy and the eastern Mediterranean, and one via Spain and the Western Mediterranean. Those Cuckoos that take the eastern route mostly fatten up in Northern Italy, in and around the Po valley. From here they can complete the crossing of Italy, from north to south, the Mediterranean and the Sahara desert in one non-stop flight, a distance of almost 2,500 miles! Those that take the western route mostly rest up and feed in southern Spain, and it is these birds that seem to run into difficulties, with mortality over twice as high as those migrating further east. Birds here aren’t finding enough food to successfully fuel their flight over the desert.

Moving through southern Europe two to three months after the adultsOpen Monday to Satur Sunday 10am—4pm,Clo might mean that they have to use different stop-over sites, or even take slightly different routes.

What we do know is that these young birds migrate to Africa entirely on their own, having never seen another Cuckoo; young Cuckoos are brought up by host species, in England mainly by Reed Warblers and by Meadow Pipits in Scotland. All the information that they need to be Cuckoos is contained within the egg laid by their mother. Cuckoos really are amazing birds.

So far, only adult Cuckoos have been tagged as the juveniles are too light. We currently have no idea if young Cuckoos behave the same as the adult birds, and it isn’t safe to assume that they do. The adult Cuckoos begin leaving in the first few days of June, whilst the young

Secrets of Thetford Library Collections Thetford’s historical significance is no secret; boasting revolutionary writer Thomas Paine amongst its alumni, our town holds significance to the U.S.A and as the former religious capital of England. However, what might be considered a lesser-known treasure of Thetford is the archive of fascinating and rare artefacts that fill the Collections Room of Thetford Library. Local community librarian David Nichols shared with us his knowledge of the collections with a contagious enthusiasm; carefully pulling down hefty green boxes filled with original antique illustrations of familiar streets, local halls and landmarks; sifting through heavy leather-bound books, some gilded with dates as far back as the 1700s. The collections room, nestled in the far corner of the library’s first floor, harbours an overwhelming amount of history for such a modestly sized room. Navigating your way through the collections your attention is drawn to Duleep Singh’s personal assembly of historical drawings and documents. Maharaja Duleep Singh, later in life nicknamed the Black Prince of Perthshire, was the last Maharaja of the Sikh Empire and the first Sikh to settle in Britain. Duleep Singh’s second son, Frederick, was one of Thetford’s most prominent benefactors.

‘The History of the Town of Thetford in the Counties of Norfolk and Suffolk’ by George Burrell This special edition was owned and added to, from the earliest accounts to the present time, by the late Thomas Martin of Palgrave, Suffolk. Burrell added many additional plates and engravings form earlier volumes, plus original artworks. Burrell also cut and pasted in many signatures of Thetford’s past mayors against a list of office holders. ‘Portraits in Norfolk Houses: Volume III’ by Prince Frederick Duleep Singh Collected between 1917-27, this unique unpublished album of original photographic prints - some images found in the very limited editions of volume 1 and 2 is an invaluable tool for portrait historians as so many house collections have since been split up.

Inspired by what the collections room has to offer, About Thetford has chosen our best-loved secrets of the Thetford Library Collections:

Duleep Singh’s ‘Image Collection’ A substantial collection of mostly engravings and lithographs of buildings across Norfolk, from the 17th Century into the early 20th; however, many original images by amateur and professional artists are to be found. Collected by Prince Frederick, but we have no information as to why or over what period of time, these images are currently not catalogued. Thetford Library Archive Friends The recently launched Thetford Library Archive Friends are a group of dedicated volunteers looking to catalogue the collections. The group meet at the library on the third Thursday of each month at 10:30am; those who are keen to join are encouraged to contact the library on the number below. The next meeting will be on the 12th October 2017. Items from the collection can be viewed by appointment - call the library on 01842 752048 or e-mail: libraries@norfolk.gov.uk

Have a Spook-Tastic Halloween! October brings beautiful colour tones, falling leaves, cosy nights with lovely candles and of course the most commercially successful holiday after Christmas, Halloween! Orange and black are the traditional colours. Orange is associated with “Fall” or “Autumn” and black is associated with death and darkness. Chocolate appears to be the “Treat” that’s most favoured.

Be sure to keep a stock of face wipes to make removing Halloween make up easier. A lot of the make-up sold is wax or oil based and won’t remove easy with just water, too much rubbing on sensitive skin can cause irritation and make the face sore. Make sure that you aren’t allergic to any ingredients in the make-up before applying. Some of the cheaper brands will contain cheaper ingredients. Sounds silly, but you will be surprised how many people are allergic to face paints. So be safe, whilst you have lots of fun.

WEA Courses For 2017/18

5 Steps For Healthy Glowing Skin

Our Autumn subject will be a look at Victorian society. “Dressing the Victorian Woman” will look at how clothes were produced and what events required a special form of dress. Changes in attitude during Victorian times were reflected in changes in style so this is a springboard for considering social and economic aspects of society. If you have old family photographs you could learn something about their date or the event which they commemorate. This is a change from the planned topic printed in the WEA booklet. Please come along if you think this would be of interest. The first meeting of 8 will be on Monday 9th October in the Methodist Hall on Tanner Street from 10.30 to 12.30. The fee is £57.60 which is waived if you receive Pension Credit or similar.

Here are the top 5 steps to help keep your skin healthy: Firstly, pre-cleansers; these are usually oil based, working on the principal of like attracts like, they are designed to remove make-up and daily grime. Follow this by cleansing the skin with an appropriate cleanser to aid lifting out impurities and to prep the skin. The next stage is exfoliation. There are excellent daily microfoliants available now which are designed to be used daily and are not harsh. They help to remove dull surface debris and to even out the skin tone. After which toner may be applied, this is to help increase hydration and also aid product penetration. Lastly is the application of a moisturiser, this acts as protection against environmental triggers and also premature ageing. All of the above will help maintain healthy skin if done regularly. Kind regards, Lisa Stallings, Halcyon Days

Our Spring course will look at the connections in style across the boundaries of art and literature in the 19th and 20th Centuries. There will be 10 sessions from 10-12 starting on Monday 8th January and the cost will be £72. As those who came to our courses last year on Italian Opera and Life in Communist Russia will know, whatever the subject our speakers have always provided unexpected and fascinating insights into their subject. Our Monday morning meetings can be quite an entertainment and certainly serve to widen our horizons!

Thetford Women’s Institute

Now into September we’re reflecting on our interesting year so far. Earlier in the year we were entertained by Ashley and Charlotte Baxter who took their three children all under 12, backpacking from St Petersburg down to Thailand over a period of just ten weeks. What an experience and what adventures they had. Our birthday party in June was held at Croxton Village Hall on a lovely sunny evening, and we had all the fun of the fair with sideshows and guessing games. On another evening, we also had the pleasure of listening to Gerry Foster telling us about her experiences as a sheep-dog trainer and trailer. Something few of us knew anything about. We welcomed Barbara Miller back to give us another of her historical talks, this time hearing all about The Great Hospital in Norwich. We learnt such a lot and hope we might be able to pay a visit there later on.

We are planning to hold another Craft Day in March next year which will be held at Barnham village hall and will be open to everyone. Further details to follow. A few members continue to help out at the Elders Lunch Club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Our Book Club continues to provide lively discussion evenings, and the Lunch club enjoy tucking in at different food venues. The two darts teams have successfully completed their season and have done extremely well.

WASPI/PAIN Norfolk Group The group held a well attended coffee afternoon during August in Sainsbury’s cafe.

We also took part in Burston Strike School Rally near Diss in September where we joined the march around the village and manned a campaign stall which was very busy. The WASPI women were born in the 1950s and have seen their State Pension Age change twice with little or no notification. Many are now waiting an additional 5 or 6 years for their pensions. We do not disagree with coming into line with men, just the harsh speedy way it was introduced without adequate notice or any transitional help. If you are affected and would like to meet other women in the same position, please contact us: E-mail: pensionactioninnorfolk@yahoo.co.uk Website: pensionactionnorfolk.wixsite.com/pain Lynn Nicholls

ASD Helping Hands ASD Helping Hands was set up in 2010 to provide support to those affected by an Autism Spectrum Disorder. We have been running for 7 years providing support on issues relating to education, social care and behaviour, while also holding regular support groups for people to attend. We have support groups based over Norfolk with a Family Support Group and a Teenage Support group in Thetford. ASD Helping Hand’s Thetford Family Group is open to anyone including siblings, that is affected by an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosed or not. The group provides a safe and secure environment for you to seek support and advice from others in a similar situation while also giving the children a chance to socialise in an understanding situation. Activities include arts and craft, cooking as well as many other sensory related activities, depending on interest. We also host days out. The Thetford group is held every two weeks on a Saturday morning between 10:00 and 12:00, at the Meet Up café on Redcastle Estate and we charge £3.00 per family for attendance.

Black Cats Black cats are the hardest colour to home. Even black kittens are left until last for adoption, whilst their more colourful siblings are chosen first. Some black cats spend many months, sometimes even years, waiting for someone to see past their colour. Between 2007 and 2013 the Blue Cross saw a 65% rise in the number of black cats they took in annually. Black cats are traditionally considered to be good luck in Great Britain and Japan, and in Scotland finding a black cat sitting on your porch is a sign of riches and happiness to come! However, some countries in Europe have considered black cats to be a symbol of evil omens and the familiars of witches. The RSPCA say that 70% of the 1000 cats in their care are black or black-andwhite. Some of the reasons they are harder to home is because they are more difficult to tell apart and they don’t photograph as well. Black cats are stunning, regal looking animals with all the charm and charisma of their more colourful cousins. There are good reasons to choose a black cat when considering adoption: They are always cool and sleek looking. They match any decor. They are mini house-panthers and they can always be found in the snow.

Seen recently at one of our rescue centres is the following poem called Pick Me: I once was thought lucky, but now that’s old hat I’m not in fashion, I’m a small black cat The visitors come and they pass with a smile I’m young and friendly, but I’ve been here a while. ‘We wanted a tabby,’ I’ve heard them request, I know I’m not tabby, but I’m doing my best. I’ve tried rolling over and waving my paw But they just take a glance and pass by my door. Maybe a ginger, that one looks nice, But a small black cat, well no one looks twice. If you come to the centre, just watch and see, They’ll choose all the others, But no one picks me.

Dr Allan Minns First Black Mayor Talk This month we are thrilled to welcome Dr Richard C. Maguire, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Public History at the University of East Anglia, Norwich on Tuesday 10 October at 2.30pm to talk about Dr Allan G. Minns . He was the grandson of an enslaved woman, a man who was born and raised in the Bahamas and then took the huge risk of moving as a teenager to England. He became the first Black man to become mayor of an English town when he was chosen to be Mayor of Thetford in 1904. Dr Allan G. Minns' life is a fascinating story with its roots in Caribbean slavery and finishes in the heart of English local life. A respected GP and local politician in Thetford during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Dr Minns raised his children in the town and became a well-known figure amongst Norfolk's political and medical establishments. This talk will discuss his successful life and consider what his life story can tell us about responses to race in nineteenth and early twentieth century Norfolk. We are also pleased to host A New Project for High Lodge – Discovering its Hidden Heritage talk by Anne Mason on Tuesday 17 October at 2.30pm. Anne will discuss the new heritage trail at High Lodge, Thetford Forest, Ancient House Autumn Opening: which has been awarded Heritage Lottery Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm Funding, and describe opportunities to take Telephone: 01842 752599 part in researching the historic landscape beneath the trees. Story of Henry Cable Comes To Life Thetford provided a full house for the final performance of The Amazing Story of Cable and Holmes by Well Made Theatre Company. The story of Henry Cable is popular in Thetford and has featured in historical walks and previous performances. The performance was a brand new interpretation of the story, written and directed by Vince Gregory. With a packed audience for the seventh and final performance of the company’s tour, the Thetford venue was particularly poignant as the Guildhall hosted the Thetford Assizes where both Henry and Susanna were sentenced before meeting in Norwich Prison. Opening in the small court, the audience were transported back to 1783, the very beginning of the story. This set the scene for a move into the large court and the story unfolding in Norwich Prison. Short scenes kept the story moving and the audience wanting more, by the end of Act One the audience was left on tenterhooks as to what was to become of Cable, Holmes and their child.

acting by the rest of cast brought the characters alive and kept the audience spellbound throughout both acts. The story itself gave an insight into the life of a prisoner in Norwich during the 18th century. Speaking about the performance a member of the audience said, “It was fantastic, I really enjoyed the evening.” The Amazing Story of Cable and Holmes finished with a biography of their lives in Australia and how they are celebrated as part of the First Fleet. Finally, the audience showed its appreciation with a rousing round of applause for the actors and crew.

Leo Oakley and Rebekah Casey provided strong leads as Cable and Holmes alongside Vince Gregory’s compassionate portrayal of jailer, John Simpson. Strong

Celebration, Celebration Thetford Voices celebrated ten years of its popular youth singing programme with a memorable workshop and concert recently.

Free MOT with Major service

Fifty children aged 5-15 and their adult leaders met in Thetford Grammar School to Celebrate with Songs, rehearsing and giving a 45 minute performance, twenty numbers, after just two days. The programme saw the group revisiting songs sung in the previous decade like When I grow up, from Matilda, and The Clouds by American composer Cynthia Gray which was performed by the older group members with a sensitivity that brought tears to more than one eye. Not to be outdone the 6-8 year olds delighted with the vocal vivacity and crisp moves of Let's go to the planets, from a Jim Parker space musical. Other numbers included a Beatles medley marking the Sgt Pepper anniversary, a pair of nineteenth century Harvest songs led by guest folk musician Alan Helsdon and the rich harmonies of African lullaby and play song At the heart of the undoubted success of this workshop were two inspirational song leaders Sarah Skinner (who was also responsible for an inventive Toddlers Hour for the five and unders) and Polina Sosnina. Their energy, warmth and musicality drew a terrific response from the young singers. Who in their turn must take the plaudits, among them those of Alan Helsdon who praised “the tremendous self-discipline of the young people”.

Auction Success For St Cuthbert’s

Barry Martin

On a beautiful August evening, St Cuthbert's church held a Summer Party in the garden of Rivers Meet. Our hosts Margot and Keith provided a stunning venue with gazebos and chairs and a table for the auction lots. Cocktails including a Gin Sling, Whisky cooler, Blue Lagoon, Pimms and a James Bond Martini were duly shaken or stirred by David! Delicious canapés were prepared and served by Felicity, Jenny and Rod.

n Ceramic wall & floor tiling n Natural stone, mosiac, porcelain etc n Free quotes available Call 01842 761269/07747 773144

The auctioneer Keith wore an attention seeking hat and provided light entertainment while making sure the bids added up to a tidy sum for the church. After more sweet treats of cakes and fruit kebabs, our host Keith sent firework rockets into the air, to end the evening and let Thetford know that something special was happening in town! So thank you to all those who donated auction lots and helped in many ways to make this evening so successful and raise over £900 for St Cuthbert's church redevelopment fund.

Local Organic Business Celebrates Successful First Year With organic September complete, Nick Kington is celebrating his first year of bringing fresh, organic, seasonal produce to people across Thetford.

Do you waste hours of time on paperwork you loathe? Or do you loathe it so much that it’s not getting done at all? Make life easy, call for a free consultation:

A year ago, Nick Kington swapped his high-flying marketing job in Reading for a new life as a selfconfessed veg nerd. As a Riverford franchisee, Nick owns a local business delivering organic produce to homes across the county. Twelve months in, Nick hasn’t looked back. “It was a pretty drastic change”, he says, “but the time to break free from 9-5 office and urban life felt right. It’s not always been smooth sailing but the highs far outweigh the lows. I’m so grateful to all my customers for giving me such a warm welcome.”

Nick now delivers more than 350 boxes of organic veg, fruit, dairy, meat and other produce, each week. Grown on Riverford’s regional farms and by a network of local organic farmers, the company aims to provide good, fairly produced food to as many people as possible. With this year’s Organic September expected to be the biggest yet according to organisers from the Soil Association, Nick is hoping to encourage more people to learn about how organic food is produced.

Sound advice, that comes from knowing you well

Monksgate Yard Sales Friends in Monksgate want to say a sincere thank-you for the wonderful support given to the recent Yard Sales. The generosity of neighbours, families, friends, colleagues and members of Thetford Methodist Church was fantastic. Plus, a great crowd of the good people of Thetford supported by supplying goods to sell, as well as practical help, buying and making items. The strength of our three hunky men, Malcolm, Dave and David, soon made light of all the heavy work, not forgetting David, the magician and Penny selling ice creams! Once again a great event for which the final total was £800 for Cancer Research UK. Thanks for all your cheerful help and cooperation and here’s to next year’s Yard Sales, Saturday September 1st 2018! Sue Webber

Success For Third Iceni Marathon The 3rd Thetford Iceni Half and Full Marathon event took place on Sunday 10th September. The event sold out for the third year attracting runners from as far away as Kent and London. Thetford Town Council closed off the Market Place which was the start and the finish points to both events. The Red Lion was the race headquarters for registration for the 3rd year. The Thetford Town Crier started the runners off at 9am. The route went through the town, by the river Thet, through Castle Park, Butten Island and Abbey Meadows before taking the Angles pathway towards New Zealand Cottages. The runners went through checkpoints which were marshalled by the 1st RAF Honington Cub and Beaver Groups and Thetford F.A.S.T. Every finisher received a finisher medal and a t-shirt. The design of the medal was completed by 11 year old Jasmine Dawes, from Thetford who won a competition to design the medal earlier this year. Chilterns Estate Agents sponsored the finisher tops and water and fruit was supplied by TESCO and handed out by Community Projects Manager Sarah Douthwaite.

Fitness Column #3 - Your Diet A lot of us are scared of the word ‘diet’. Why? Diet usually means being strict with ourselves; no snack bits or take-aways, no full fat drinks or sweet treats. In actual fact we should concentrate on what’s in our diet, which doesn’t mean we can’t be naughty! I’m a great believer in everything in moderation. I have a slight addiction to pic ‘n’ mix sweets, I’ll eat chocolate cake until the cows come home and I can be found raiding all snack cupboards for crisps and snacks - all treats I allow myself. Telling yourself you can’t have something only makes you want it more, so if you’re heading in to a new food routine, it’s better to ease the bad foods out slowly.

This month’s Fitness Column is provided by Richard Taylor from Tiger Fitness

Top tips; Avoid the aisle-end discounts. Set weekly targets. Have plenty of choice in your weekly meals. Eat 3- 5 times a day, including small snack (nuts, boiled eggs, fruits); and Consume 2-3 litres of water a day. A good tool to monitor your daily diet is an app called ‘My Fitness Pal’ you can download it for free and scan the barcode of what you’re eating and drinking. Once scanned, all the information will be logged on to your daily diet counter.

Planning - We’ve all heard ‘failure to prepare is preparing to fail’ well that’s exactly it in this case. By sorting a new food plan, knowing when you’re eating and what you’re eating is half the battle. Preparing your food the night before and actually looking forward to eating it will make a lot of difference. Talk To Someone In The Profession - Getting advice from someone who knows what they’re talking about is a great way to get started. See if they have any techniques that can make food preparation easier and maybe ask them what they do in their diet. I include Herbalife in my diet and have done for years. One shake for breakfast and I’m sorted on my morning commute to work!

If you Fitness have questions or would 1like14/08/2017 advice, contact Tiger AD.qxp_Layout 14:12 Page Richard via email: tigerfitness@hotmail.com

Tiger Fitness Circuit Classes

Cheat Meals - Giving yourself a day of the week where you can have a cheat day can often slow your weekly progress. I would always suggest, if you fancy something, have it! Not to the extent that you’re eating a take away every night because you fancy it, but maybe have that tiny piece of chocolate to curb the craving!

Monday and Friday evenings held at The Charles Burrell Centre.

involved this year, and thought what better way than to encourage team work, as it is such an important part of our work at EAAA. We are delighted to have such a variety of inspiring people launching the event this year, and we want to encourage all participants to get involved with our Only The Brave 2018 Facebook page and tell us who is making up your teams.

EAAA is a charity providing a life-saving helicopter emergency medical service for the people of East Anglia, and this event is an exhilarating way to get involved with raising funds. The Only The Brave (OTB) challenge is now in its third year, and this time the whole event will take place on a Sunday. As a nod to the incredible teamwork and bravery of the crews aboard their two helicopters, EAAA is this year encouraging teams to get involved and highlight the individual skills they each bring to make their team work.

Tim Papworth, who was 2017’s top fundraiser at the event and an ex-patient of EAAA, said of the event; “EAAA perform miracles, as I know, I’m one of them! Without public donations and fundraising they would not be able to save lives. I managed to raise so much money due to the generosity of my friends and family”

The EAAA team launching this event is made up of The Inspiration, The Leader, The Motivator, The Brains and The Fit One, and consists of EAAA crew, an ex-patient, a fitness guru and last year’s OTB winner.
