Revised Remembrance Day Parade
Poppies In The Post
Due to the current situation regarding Covid-19, this year’s Remembrance Day parade will not be as per usual. It is proposed that all standard bearers and wreath layers, (those who wish to march), assemble in the vicinity of Kings Street Square in Kings Street at 10.30am. Under the command of the Royal British Legion Parade Marshal the parade will march up Kings Street and onto the Market Square via the opening in front of the Red Lion and take up position.
The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign held every year in November, the period of Remembrance.
The Mayor of Thetford and Councillors will then assemble on the Market Square at 10.45am. This year the ceremony will be as follows: A prayer led by the clergy, the last post will be sounded and the two minutes silence observed. At the end of the two minutes the wreath laying will commence. The parade will then dismiss. All those participating and members of the public must maintain social distancing with the required two meters.
Thanks to the Appeal, we can ensure our Armed Forces community and their families, both past and present, receive the support they need and deserve. Every year, our volunteers distribute over 40 million poppies to help our vital work in supporting the Armed Forces community. Due to COVID-19 this year, many of our volunteers are unable to help. That’s why we are asking kind supporters like you to help distribute poppies to your friends and neighbours, and ensure we can continue to help our Armed Forces community in their time of need, ensuring their contribution is never forgotten. Your Poppy Appeal needs you! Request 20 poppies free of charge by completing the online form. You can then give them to your friends and family and ask them for a donation to support our Armed Forces community. Along with the poppies, you will also receive information on how you and those you share your poppies with can give as well as how to distribute the poppy safely and ensure everyone can wear the poppy with pride. Please request your envelope by 31 October to ensure you receive it in time. Thetford Honours Forgotten Soldier The family of Private Norman Stevenson of the 5th Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment, attended a ceremony at the Far East Prisoner of War tree at Nun’s Bridges along with the Mayor of Thetford, Royal Air Force Association reprentatives, RAF Honnington, plus FEPOW representatives, and citizens of the town for the 75th Anniversary service of the end of the war in Japan. After the last post, and the wreath laying and prayers, the family were invited by the Thetford Royal British Legion to attend a small ceremony at the Market Square Cenotaph for the unveiling of Norman Stevenson’s name which has now been finally inscribed and remembered after his death in the Far East in 1942.
