Antique Auctions Return

Inspired by his Grandad, Sam Royall has followed his dreams and opened his own antiques shop, BA Royall Antiques, at the Charles Burrell Centre. “My Grandad used to have a stall on Great Yarmouth market selling china including Charlotte Read, Susie Cooper and coins, I’ve loved antiques since I was 8 years old.” Sam started his career at Gary Emms Auction House as a porter, then moved to Clare Auction. These days alongside the shop you’ll find him with a gavel at the Rare Auction in Great Thurlow and from January 2022 at his antique and collectables auction in the main hall at the CBC. “I’m looking to put together auctions that have a bit of everything, at a price for everyone.” Sam continued, “I’ll be holding valuations beforehand, and we’ll also provide a reserve price offer.” Sam prefers traditional in the room bidding with the catalogue available a week before the auction. Sam is aiming to hold 6 auctions in Thetford during 2022. Since starting his own business Sam has moved from china to teddy bears, his favourite being Stieff bears, modern or old. Sam also loves Whitefriars Glass, especially the Geoffrey Baxter texture range and says it’s his favourite type of art glass. Sam has recently started to buy modern collections including collectables such as Wallace and Gromit, comics, computer games and autographs. He wanted to bring in collectables that engage with a younger market and hopes this will encourage younger people to learn what’s good and how to sell. He is keen to help new dealers avoid getting ripped off and is planning a YouTube channel. Sam is a member of EADA (Essex Antique Dealers Association) a trade body that regulates dealers and offers a good network of experts. The shop stocks a diverse range from traditional antiques to retro and vintage. Prices range from £1 to £2000 with Sam happy to help budding collectors build their collections.
