Grab Yourself A Bargain And Help A Good Cause The annual Monksgate Yard Sale is now well established on the Thetford calendar having been organised by Sue and Rus Webber each September for the past 9 years. Every year Sue and Rus set themselves a target of raising £3000 for Cancer Research UK and proceeds from the Yard Sale always make a significant contribution to the total. Along with the array of stalls in residents’ front gardens there’s always a fantastic cake sale. Everyone who books a pitch along with many of the neighbours donates a delicious homemade bake, so even if you don’t want to shop, it’s worth a visit for the tea and cake! This year 22 stalls will be dotted along the length of Monksgate creating Thetford’s very own brocante, there’s always a bargain to be had from general bric a brac to plants and home made pies. “The best thing about our sale is that you never know what’s going to be there, we’ve had some amazing things on people’s stalls in the past. Everything from vintage clothes to new toys still in the boxes. There really is something for everyone” Sue and Rus spend several months collecting a wide variety of items for their CRUK stall so an electic mix is guaranteed at no. 19. “It takes a lot of work but we love it,” continued Sue “We are enormously grateful to our friends, family and neighbours who are so generous. If they can’t have a stall they often lend us their garden and pass on bit and pieces for us to sell. Our Yard sale is always completed by a visit from The Mayor, we really appreciate the support of our marvellous community.”

All The Fun Of The Fair Generations of Thetfordians have enjoyed a thrilling visit to L Gray & Sons Funfairs on Melford Common. The Gray family have a long established link to the town. Larry Gray Senior has been bringing the fair to Thetford for over 50 years and his Uncle Herbert brought the fair to town during the war years. It was Herbert Gray’s dodgem rink that was kept tucked away on Melford Common and used for dances during WW2. These days Larry Gray Senior runs the fair with his three sons Larry, Renny and Sheldon and daughter Tiffany. “We love coming to Thetford,” said young Larry, “We’ve made some good friends over the years, we always look forward to our visits in September, April and of course in November for the fireworks. We love what we do and will carry on for as long as people keep coming to enjoy the rides and stalls.” Young Larry regularly supports a number of town events including the Christmas Light switch on and the CBC Community Day by providing rides or on occasion - sacks of coconuts!

Out and About Thetford

TADDS Celebrates of 5 years of support

On the 25th July 2014 Thetford and District Dementia Support group held its very 1st group meeting. Having worked for the Alzheimer’s Society for several years, CEO Jo Mountjoy-Dixon could see that there was need for support in her hometown. “At the start there were more volunteers than people attending, and the volunteers felt anxious that maybe Thetford did not need such a service.” Jo explained. In the following 5 years the group has grown so large that it had to move premises to accommodate the growing number of people attending. Each week over 45 people attend the Jo Mountjoy-Dixon holding the TADDS birthday cake with session at Cloverfield Church with around 30 people Steph and a mini donk, Yvonne, Doreen, Sylvia and Jo staying for lunch. “We have achieved so much, not just from the sheer number of people needing support but also with other groups such as Cloverfield Church where we were instrumental in achieving the lovely new kitchen. It’s fair to say that TADDS would not be where it is today without the full support of the committed volunteers.” The TADDS vision is to continue to support the growing number of people living with dementia in our local area, providing somewhere where they can come and enjoy a day of activities and chat. Jo continued, “We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over the past 5 years with time or donations. Please feel free to drop in and see us, share some refreshments and cake!” To mark the occasion the group held a birthday party with a beautiful cake, singing from Thetford Rainbows, a visit from the ever popular mini donkeys and an ice cream van. The group is not statutory funded and relies on funding or donations. Recently Amanda Salmon raised £200 from her first 10k run. “I first visited TADDS when my mum brought my dad over and was so impressed with the group and support it offers for both carers and sufferers.” Vince Gregory will continue the fundraising when he undertakes a day walk into and out of the Grand Canyon towards the end of September. Sikh Relics Uncovered Historian and researcher Gurinder Singh

Mann recently visited Thetford to talk about the Sikh objects held in British collections as part of the Festival of Punjab and Norfolk. Some of the finest items from the Sikh Empire are held in the UK but not on display. Gurinder explained that many of the items in British collections could be said to be trophies of war, as are British items taken by Sikh warriors. This includes the Norfolk Regt who have relics within their collections following the Anglo Sikh wars. After 1849 Lord Login catalogued the Royal treasury before items were taken by Lord Dalhousie and the East India Company, providing evidence of the Treasury contents. These items included weapons of Guru Gobin Singh, the 10th Guru and of immense importance. Eventually the weapons were returned by the Dalhousie family to the Indian Government in the 1960s, who then returned them to the Sikh community. Other items were sold in the Punjab eventually returning to the UK. Between 1850 – 51 there were 7 sales of collections by the British. In his later life Maharajah Duleep Singh protested that the British had sold objects belonging to him personally, not just state items for which he was never compensated. Impressive jewels were not

the objects taken by the British. In the British Library a manuscript from Guru Nanak belonging to Rani Jind Kaur (Duleep Singh’s mother) can be found; there are Sikh manuscripts spread across the UK in library and university collections. The family of Maharajah Duleep Singh also sold jewels themselves. Prince Victor sold his some of his inheritance in 1899, the jewels were purchased by Major Carnegie who subsequently gave the collection to the National Museum Scotland in 1911. During his research Gurinder came across gold pen cases from the early 1800s that once belonged to the Maharajah along with much older jewellery from the Punjab. Not all of the Duleep Singh jewellery is in the UK. One of Princess Sophia’s armlets, originally belonging to her grandmother, Rani Jind Kaur and studded with semi-precious stones is now in a private collection in Lahore. The lack of access to these objects led to Gurinder asking himself how he could show the collections to a wider audience. He pointed out that he isn’t a collector or in a position to purchase objects but could recreate them using 3D technology. The idea of a virtual museum was born, and the museum now has 20 objects covering different aspects of Anglo Sikh history. Using a touch screen and virtual reality the objects can come to life and be viewed from all angles. There has been huge international interest in the project which led to the launch of the virtual museum on August 8th. Princes Trust Scheme Success 14 young people from Thetford and the surrounding area are looking

forward to the future after completing a Princes Trust programme in the town. Delivered by Inspire Suffolk and aimed at young people not in employment, training or education; the group of 17 – 24 year olds enjoyed a residential trip before delivering a community project and undertaking work experience. Over 4 days they took on challenges such as zip wires, archery and team working activities to uncover hidden skills. Jaden said that the residential week had taken him outside his comfort zone but had improved his confidence so much that he now wants to go on a computer game design course. Having learnt to work together during the first week, the group then planned a bake sale and tombola to raise money towards the materials needed for their project. They chose to redecorate the Youth Room at the Riversdale Centre in town and also helped in the garden. “We are really happy that we achieved our goal,” said Katie “I was so nervous when I first started, but I enjoyed baking the cakes and the bake sale. Thanks to my team mates for bringing me out of my shell and not judging me.” Katie says she is now ready to find a job and is starting a Maths GCSE course. The experience has helped the group not only to gain confidence but also to understand the kind of work they would like to do in the future, or shaped plans for further study. For the final part of their course the group presented their stories to invited guests including the Mayor, Cllr Brenda Canham, friends and family. Jo moved to the area from London and told the audience that she felt proud of the challenges she’d overcome during the course, she volunteered in a charity shop to gain retail experience in order to get a job. “I have constantly been told that I don’t have enough experience, but Princes Trust has helped me to change this.” Leon had a successful work placement with The Lively Crew where he gained valuable skills in the marketing sector. “I really enjoyed creating newsletters and social media posts during my placement. I’m going on a digital media course as a result.” After presenting the group with their certificates the Mayor thanked the group for supporting the Riversdale Centre where she is a trustee. For 40 years The Princes Trust has been working to improve the lives of young people and has had great success with training into employment collaborations with partners such as Inspire Suffolk. Inspire Suffolk is running another session in Thetford starting Tuesday 30th September. For more information on Princes Trust course visit; www.inspiresuffolk.org.uk Team leader Jacob with some of the participants and the Mayor of Thetford after their presentation. Heritage Open Days 2019 With a dynamic programme of over 5,000 events, Heritage Open Days is England’s largest annual festival of history and culture. Every September, doors are flung open at some of the country’s best-known attractions, as well as private and community spaces, thanks to support from the National Trust and players of People’s Postcode Lottery. To celebrate the festival’s 25th anniversary, 25 new places are opening their doors, from country houses, museum archives and gardens, to theatres, wildlife reserves, distilleries and even a solar farm. Many of the venues taking part for the first time are not normally open to the public, including the Mausoleum at Castle Howard and the Burnley Empire Theatre, which is opening its doors for the first time since closing in 1995. Other events are offering behind-the-scenes access to their buildings and archives, such as the Prince Philip Maritime Collections at Royal Museums Greenwich, with items being presented by local community groups as part of this year’s People Power theme. While Eton College Collections are welcoming visitors to special curators’ choice trails, opening an appointment-only exhibition.

The 25 new places cover a wide range of topics. Near to Thetford, the Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire is one of the 25 opening this year. See the House and grounds transformed with colourful pop-up dahlia installations, in an event keen gardeners won’t want to miss. Visitors to Dazzling Dahlias will be surprised by artistic cut flower art, complementing the gardens, which this year feature over 80 varieties of this floristry favourite. Thetford venues participating include Thetford Library, Dad’s Army Museum, Thetford Guildhall, St Cuthbert’s Church, Ancient House Museum, Riversdale, Charles Burrell Museum and others. Mobile Offer For Small Businesses

Brandon Photographic Club

The Digital Phone Company have recently celebrated 25 years of operating locally on the high-street.

We are fast approaching our first meeting of the new season. Meetings are held at the Baptist Church Hall on the High Street, Brandon. There is plenty of parking at the rear of the building and we meet on alternate Wednesdays starting this year on the 4th September. Make it a date and come along to meet us.

The firm, located in Thetford as well as other Norfolk towns, offer the local community mobile phone solutions on their doorstep. The company’s success has been built around providing customers ongoing support throughout the duration of any contract, a service often charged for by larger national stores. This service has seen Digital Phone Company retain their loyal customer base and is why the high-street remains a focal point for the business. As they enter their 26th year of trading, Digital Phone Company are adding something extra by offering Sole Traders, Partnerships and Small Businesses bespoke mobile phone packages. These customers usually have to “make-do” with standard retail offers, which often fail to meet their specific needs.

We have an interesting and eclectic year of topics ahead of us, including tutorials and workshops on Depth of Field and Focusing; using a Flash and Multiple Exposures; Composition, Cropping and Cleaning-up Clutter and Macro Photography, so don’t miss out. Come along on Wednesday 4th September to meet the members, hear all about the year to come and watch a DVD on the Art of Travel Photography (Getting Beyond the Postcard). You don’t need to spend a fortune on expensive cameras to start learning about photography, many phones, compact and bridge cameras take some really good images and these are well worth looking at. Give it a go and see how you get on. Everyone is welcome to join in and we look forward to seeing you at the start of the new season on Wednesday September 4th 2019. Don’t forget you can follow us on Facebook and keep up to date with what’s going on.

“We understand that as a business owner, a Sole Trader may have different demands to a normal phone user, our business tariffs allow us to adjust the tariff to suit the customer rather than making do with a “one-size fits all” approach. As an example, the contract length may need to be of a specific tenure or data allowances may need adjusting to the demands of the business” said Richard King, Sales Director.

FLEXIBLE CONTRACT LENGTHS

Whether you are a plumber, a singer or operate a website from home, if you run your own business you will qualify for these bespoke business plans. Small sole traders as well as larger businesses are able to access this service; the company also state that the packages are very competitive and beat many online offers. Packages start from just £12.50 per month, with all makes/models of handsets available including Apple iPhone, Samsung, Sony, Nokia and Huawei.

40 Libraries Across Norfolk Now Open For Longer More library customers than ever in Norfolk can now take advantage of the long summer days and light nights, with 40 libraries now offering extended opening hours since the beginning of the year. The scheme, called Open Library, gives customers, partners and community groups access even when a library is unstaffed. It was rolled out in June 2018, with 30 libraries initially. With these 10 new libraries, the overall number of hours libraries are now open to the public has increased, to 1,360 hours extra per week. Margaret Dewsbury, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “We know the current opening times mean some residents may not be able to visit their library during the working day. So by extending the opening hours, we’re offering unprecedented access to all the vital resources our libraries offer to people in Norfolk. We also want to make Norfolk’s libraries more accessible to a new audience, who have not traditionally used the library service because their local branch isn’t open at a time when they can visit.” To sign up for Open Library, people just need to talk to a member of staff who can add the access to their library card and give them a PIN number. The library user presenting their card at the scanner, and entering their PIN number on the keypad, and they will be able to enter. They can then use the computers and borrow and return books using self-service machines as they would if staff were present. Open Library requires a full up to date library membership and users must be aged 16 or over. Children need to be accompanied by an adult during Open Library hours.

to use the facilities outside of core opening hours, to deliver their services in a safe and trusted space in the local community. Library friends and community groups will also be able to use their library for regular meetings and activities, if they are not reliant on staff being available to open the library for them. Most branches offering Open Library will be accessible during standard hours of 8am-7pm Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm on Saturdays, and 10am-4pm on Sundays. There will be some exceptions to these hours for certain branches, so people are encouraged to check the exact times for their local branch online at; www.norfolk.gov.uk/OpenLibrary

Make Your Home Safe With 1st Choice Locksmiths Did you know that your insurance may well be invalid? Local locksmith Sean Rickard says that many people are surprised to find out how easy it is to have your insurance invalidated without realising. “New insurance rules have been introduced regarding locks; some companies have made the new requirements clear whilst others have hidden the detail in their small print. It’s definitely worth pulling out your policy and checking” Sean advised. All locks on your property should meet British Standards and have an anti-snap and anti-drill feature on them. Yale locks should be fitted alongside a mortice lock and not on their own. “Unfortunately, locks can become out of date for insurance purposes and people are not always aware of this.” Continued Sean, “I offer a free no obligation consultation and quote service for this reason, I’m happy to come and take a look at your locks and give advice.”

Group Looks Forward to First Exhibition

Thetford Inner Wheel

For King Street Quilters, it is an exciting month as they are exhibiting their work for the first time in September. They are a small happy group of ladies who meet on the last Thursday in the month between 7- 9pm at the Baptist Church on King Street. Speaking about the group, quilter Helen Garner said, “It doesn’t matter what level you are at, when I first joined I hadn’t done any quilting before. We have a tutor, Carol, who helps us all with various projects; sometimes individual and other times as a group.”

August is a quiet month for Inner Wheel in Thetford but two members, Marie Muir and Marian de Bass were privileged to visit the The Nook Hospice before it opens in September. EACH is a charity we have supported over the years and it was wonderful to see the new building nearly ready to receive its first children. The building is set in large grounds in the countryside and will provide much improved facilities including a hydrotherapy pool and a sensory room. Quidenham will eventually close and everyone will move to the new site. £1m is still required to reach the original target.

The exhibition opens between 10am - 4pm at King Street Baptist Church. Tickets for the exhibition are £2 per person which includes a cup of tea or coffee and can be purchased at Leaping Hare in advance or on the day. Helen continued, “We welcome all, and would love to see our numbers grow, so come along and meet us either at the exhibition or on the last Thursday of the month.”

Silver Social – The Origin Of Species Tangram Theatre will be performing “The Origin of Species” for residents this October. The show is a joyful, exhilarating musical comedy about Charles Darwin, whose (r)evolutionary ideas would change humanity forever. The Origin of Species has now been performed over 200 times at leading international venues and festivals including the Royal Albert Hall and the Natural History Museum, receiving critical acclaim and standing ovations across the world. The performance is part of Silver Social, an exciting daytime touring arts programme, aimed at older people in rural communities in Breckland. The project, which is run by Breckland Council and funded by Arts Council England, Breckland Council and Norfolk County Council Public Health, brings something a little different to daily life in towns and villages across Breckland, Norfolk, through alternating circuits of creative workshops and live performances held in familiar community venues. Whether you want to meet new people over a cuppa, take part in new social pursuits, or you know a neighbour or family member who might like to join a new group, they aim to bring high quality accessible arts to a friendly, familiar space.

Charity Concert For Wings Appeal The Wings Appeal is the RAF Association’s on-going fundraising campaign that runs throughout the year. It is the fundraising arm of the Association and helps raise the vital funds needed to support serving and former RAF personnel and their families, whenever they are in need. Whether it’s an injured airman fighting to get back onto his feet, a young child missing their parent away on overseas operations or a WWII veteran needing a shoulder to lean on, we are here to help. Since its beginnings in 1951, fundraising for the Wings Appeal initially centred on the Battle of Britain week (Wings Week), however, over time, fundraising methods have diversified and fundraising has become an activity that spreads throughout the year rather than concentrating on the Wings Week in September. In Thetford an annual concert is held in September at The Carnegie. The ever popular Taverham Band will be headlining alongside Honington Military Wives Choir and Thetford Players who will perform songs from the musicals. The concert starts 7:30pm (doors open 6.30pm). Light refreshments will be available along with a raffle. All proceeds in aid of the 2019 RAFA Wings Appeal. Tickets are £10 per person and available from Leaping Hare Box Office

Thetford Rotary Club At a dinner meeting in early June, members were given an excellent talk by Group Captain Terry Holloway Rtd, who is the archivist for Marshalls Aerospace in Cambridge. He described Marshall’s first involvement with aviation in 1912, when their motor mechanics helped repair the engine of a British Army airship which had landed behind their garage. They went on to own and maintain a large number of aircraft during World War Two, when they trained over 20,000 pilots. They carried on developing and maintaining aircraft, including the Valiant Victor (one of the three types of aircraft commonly referred to as V-bombers), and later designed and manufactured the droop nose for Concorde. Marshalls continues today to operate at the forefront of aviation and is one of the regions, if not the countries major success stories. At the end of June, President John Gallen hosted afternoon tea at the Riverside Hotel in Mildenhall. Guests included members’ wives and partners, together with some former members. A highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of a Paul Harris Award to member Gary Goodchild, to recognise his significant input into the furtherance of Rotary Ideals. Paul Harris was the founder, in 1906, of the Rotary Movement.

Early July was handover time when President John passed on his chain of office to Colin Mackay. John reminisced about his year, and in particular the successful setting up of Thetford’s satellite club, Rotary@CBC largely thanks to the efforts of Gary, and the satellite’s first President, Karen-Emma White. The speaker at August’s dinner was John Ford, a retired senior RAF officer, and former member of the club, who talked about his involvement in Rifle shooting, which he Sullivan 1-8th 1 14/12/2016 08:28 has developed toAdvert_Layout the level of representing his country in Page an international match in South Africa.

Talk About Time-Saver Way Of Building Probus members were given an insight into housebuilding of a very different kind to the onsite bricks and mortar method. Speaking at the club’s August meeting, member John Hobday-Pepper expanded on a talk he gave last year, when he outlined his job as Technical Director of Brandon-based Omar Park Homes from which he retired in 2017. Although Park Homes & Lodges now account for most of the company’s business, there is a lesser-known area where its expertise had historically been used to design and construct permanent housing. He showed pictures of housing developments including Norwich, Thetford and Mildenhall which, built using prefabricated modules, looked no different to homes constructed in the conventional way, yet took only a fraction of the time to complete. Among the many projects he co-supervised was the construction of apartment blocks. To save on costs, modules were made in the company’s Polish factory then shipped to their sites in Norway for assembly. One of most unusual projects which Mr Hobday-Pepper worked on involved developing floating homes moored around a privately -owned island in the River Thames. This also led to

Nigel King presents new member David Childerhouse with his Probus badge

the creation of a lagoon within the island for additional floating homes. Also at the meeting, members were delighted to welcome another new member to their ranks, David Childerhouse, who is a retired gas industry engineer and has local family farming connections. He was presented with his Probus Club badge by Chairman Nigel King.

River Day Outing For Thetford U3A Thetford U3A had a stall on the market on Thetford River Day. It was very windy and Gil the Membership Secretary and I spent the whole morning picking up our leaflets which kept blowing everywhere. Eventually we had to give up as the wind increased but this was the time the rain came down in bucket loads so we staggered wet through to the nearest coffee shop to dry off. We have had a few members interested in having a signing group. At the latest meeting we now have 7 people wanting to attend. If any of our members reading this would be interested will you please contact me and we can take things further. It will take about two months to set it up but I think this would be a worthwhile experience and might help other people. We now have a new acting chairman Mike Sweeting so please introduce yourselves to him at our next meeting. On October 10th we will be having an Emergency General Meeting to deliver the accounts. There will be more information at a later date. Meetings are held at the Carnegie Room Thetford every 4th Thursday of the month at 2pm. Free to Members, £2 for Visitors. Free Hearing Care Event in Thetford One local business is holding a free hearing loss awareness event to encourage the residents of Thetford to prioritise their hearing health. Hearing loss affects 1 in 6 people in the UK and it takes 10 years on average before those who have noticed a loss in their hearing choose to seek help. Research has also proven that other than a reduced quality and experience of life, hearing loss can also lead to cognitive decline resulting in conditions such as depression and dementia. The Hearing Care Centre, which is a family -run business with 26 centres across East Anglia, will hold a special Hearing Care Day at their clinic in Thetford Healthy Living Centre on Tuesday 1st October. Karen Finch, founder and lead audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre said “Hearing loss is a real issue in the UK. More often than not it's a gradual process, it's not always easy to tell if you're losing your hearing. Therefore it is so important to have your hearing assessed on a regular basis to intervene at the earliest stage possible.” For more info or to book an appointment, call 0800 096 2637 or visit; hearingcarecentre.co.uk/thetfordhlc

This month’s Thetford Face is Lynn Nicholls. Lynn has lived in Thetford for many years and most recently has been leading a group campaigning for women’s pension rights both county-wide and nationally. When did you move to the town? We moved here in 1975 with London Overspill as my husband got a job at Jeyes. We knew we wouldn’t be able to get a house in London, so to be offered a 3 bedroom house was great. We moved to Abbey Estate and made our home. What was your early life like in the town? After a year we moved to Frobisher Close as the Admirals Estate was being built. I worked for Eastern Gas on Bury Road. I loved living in Thetford, everything you needed was here and you could walk to it. I used to walk down Priory Park to get to town and one day I spotted a bungalow up for sale, which we brought and renovated. I’ve been living in central Thetford for 31 years now.

Norfolk Broads Pension Action In Norfolk organisers, L to R: Lorraine White, Lynn and Annette James

Are you involved in any community organisations? I’ve taken part in over 200 Parkruns. I joined up because I’d signed up for Race 4 Life and thought it would be a good idea to get a bit of practice in, but I loved it and I’ve been there for 5 years, I really enjoy Parkrun on a Saturday morning. Most of my involvement is with sports groups, I’m also a member of Thetford Shortmat Bowls Club. We wanted something to do together and enjoy the social side. I also go to Paracise classes on a Wednesday morning, it’s a great group recommended for people who can’t do normal exercise classes. The other group I enjoy being part of is the Crafty Cuppa group at the Salvation Army on the last Friday of the month. I helped create the knitted garden for Thetford Open Gardens. Lynn and her husband Henry (known as Nick)

How has Thetford changed over the years? There have been lots of changes in the town since we moved here. There’s not so many shops on the high street, more housing and the town has spread out as it’s got bigger. In many ways the changes have been good, it’s more diverse than when we first moved here, we have retail parks and a cinema again.

How did you become involved in the pension campaign? In 2016 I saw on Facebook that ladies were talking about having to wait longer for their pensions. One of the ladies had a meeting set up with local MP Clive Lewis and I went along to support her. Clive suggested we create a group so Pension Action Norfolk was born. We started a Facebook page and women affected started to join.

Please mention the About Thetford Magazine when responding to advertisements 26

Who does the Pension issue affect? The change affects ladies born from 1951 onwards, time is not on their side and we need help now. In Norfolk 45,000 ladies are currently affected by the changes. We’ve now opened our Facebook page to ladies born in the 1960s. We are the generation of carers, looking after parents and grandchildren and trying to manage without pensions. A woman born on 5th January 1953 will have received their full pension in 2015, a woman born on 5th July 1953 had to wait until 2017 for their pension and a woman born on 5th December 1953 had to wait until March 2019 for her pension. How can this be fair? What does Norfolk Broads PAIN (Pension Action in Norfolk) offer? We hold meet up sessions around the county, these have turned out to be really helpful, ladies are discovering that they’re not on their own and can get support. We’ve since contacted all the Norfolk MPs to get support. Norman Lamb, Clive Lewis and Henry Bellingham have all been very supportive. We want to get acknowledgement that we’ve had an injustice, that we weren’t given enough notice. I had 2 years notice that I’d have to work an extra 5 years.

from all relevant groups rather than from one. ‘Back to 60’ group have taken out a judicial review and we supported them outside the Royal Courts of Justice. What are you currently working on as a group? We’ve asked Norfolk County Council about bus passes being given to ladies when they reach 60 to match other areas in the country. Our ladies are willing to contribute towards a bus pass like London ladies do. Cllr Judy Oliver put through a motion of support for the group and we’re hoping that council will support our bus pass request. Our next meet up is Saturday 7th September at City Hall, Norwich from 10:30am to 1:30pm. What you enjoy about living in Thetford? You can get everywhere really easily and we’re surrounded by the forest. We’ve been married for 44 years and Thetford has always been good to us, we’ve had a good life here. We’ve made some good friends and enjoy joining in with community events. The West Norfolk Aviation Society's Summer Frolics As the Mundford Bowls Club need their premises for its own activities at this time of the year, our club took to the road in July and August and headed to The Imperial War Museum at Duxford where we were treated to displays of fighter and training aircraft which were rehearsing for the weekend’s air show. Between the pauses in the flying displays we viewed the exhibits in the Land Warfare Building and visited the workshops where the vintage aircraft are restored. The combination of the fine weather, excellent flying, interesting exhibits and convivial company made the day memorable and worth repeating next year. In August, a few more of us set off for the Norfolk & Suffolk Aviation Museum at Flixton. Most of us had been there before but, with so much to see, interest was maintained for the whole five hours we were there. Whilst sitting aboard a Vickers Valetta – which served suitably as a reception centre – we were briefed by Steve, the chairman of the museum, who gave us an extensive and entertaining account of the initial and continuing developments of the project which functions

almost entirely on volunteer support and public donations. Steve then took us on a private tour of some of the exhibits and even allowed the lucky few an opportunity to perform a simulated flight in a converted Bristol Sycamore helicopter. Another member of the crew, Ray, a wartime avionics expert, endowed some of us with his knowledge of early radar wizardry. We owe both chaps a debt of thanks for their attentiveness and tolerance towards our ribaldry and banter. Best wishes to you all at Flixton; you deserve it. If our pursuits raise your interest in the group, please join us at our next meeting in Mundford. You will be made very welcome. Squawk Like An Egyptian Have you ever wondered what those conspicuous goose-like birds are, the ones often seen paddling around local water bodies or striding across our green spaces? With a pink beak and legs, orange eyes encircled by brown ‘goggles’, and a striking combination of black, white and orangey-brown wing feathers, Egyptian Geese are certainly eye-catching! However, they are neither exclusively Egyptian nor true geese, being more closely related to the Shelduck. They share the hole-nesting habits of that species but unlike Shelduck, which tend to use rabbit burrows for their nests, Egyptian Geese seem to prefer using holes in trees. This can make for a surprising sight when you spot one or both of a breeding pair perched near their nest hole, which can be as much as 80 feet above the ground. Egyptian Geese are not native to the UK. Their natural range extends across most of sub-Saharan Africa. The first introduction was into the King’s collection in St James’s Park in 1678; their numbers subsequently built up in places where landowners wanted to adorn their estates with these exotic-looking birds. When I was a lad, holidaying in north Norfolk in the 1980s and 90s, Holkham estate was one such place and was one of very few locations where I could expect to see them. The combination of old woodland, grassland and plenty of open water make several of the large estates in that area particularly attractive for these birds, perhaps because of the similarities of such parkland to their typical habitats in Africa. Between the first atlas of breeding birds in Britain and Ireland, led by the British Trust for Ornithology during 1968–72, and the most recent one (2007–11), the UK range of the Egyptian Goose has expanded by a staggering 1,172% which highlights how widespread they are becoming. Non-migratory throughout most of their natural range, the species’ rather short, stubby wings are better suited to flying into and out of trees, rather than traveling

efficiently over long distances. That said, Egyptian Geese can form flocks of 100 or more in late summer and early autumn, and will sometimes fly to and from favoured communal roost sites in noisy flocks, much like our local Greylag and Canada Geese (both of which hail from wild relatives that are strongly migratory in their native ranges). One other interesting fact about Egyptian Geese is that they often start breeding in late winter, so it is not uncommon to see them wandering around with their cute black and white goslings as early as Valentine’s Day! Garden And Allotment Club Notes September is a month of ends and beginnings. The Club Annual Show, which has been moved to Saturday 14th, gives us the chance to celebrate success in the garden. This is an open show so anyone can enter – setting up times are between 8.30am and 10.45am. With over 100 classes the display in the Methodist Hall should be a sight worth seeing and visitors are welcome from 1pm with prize giving at 3pm; this includes the Council’s awards for the best-kept allotments across all its sites. Some crops are still going strong – Autumn fruiting raspberries should be at their best while beans and courgettes should go on producing if you keep picking the young vegetables. Apples and pears are best picked when they will come away from the stem with a twist of the wrist. If they are firmly attached, leave them to ripen for a few more days. If you have enough to store, keeping the fruit from touching can save losing the whole crop to mould. There will be damaged fruit so a session of stewing fruit to freeze or making chutney will reward you with good flavours later in the year. Chutney will have matured nicely by Christmas and could come in handy as a gift. It is easy to make but make sure the internal kitchen door is shut as the smell of boiling vinegar is quite pungent! If you have green fingers, you can take cuttings of pelargoniums, fuschias and osteospermum this month. For those of us less gifted, it is also time to divide herbaceous perennials and these will root quite easily in the warm soil which should be holding the moisture better as the days shorten. Hardy annual seeds can be sown for an early blooming next year – cornflowers, marigolds, poppies and larkspur all grow without much trouble and will self-seed given half a chance. Spring flowering bulbs are available now if you want the widest choice or a particular item.

Hanging baskets have given everyone passing by a lot of pleasure all summer. You may get a late flush of colour from them if you trim the straggly growth back and boost the watering regime with plant food but, if it is too late, you could replant the basket with a winter selection – trailing variegated ivy, heather, winter pansies and miniature bulbs. A pond is a wonderful wildlife asset for any garden but it does need looking after. Leaves will be falling soon and any that blow onto the surface of the pond will get wet, sink and start decomposing. This robs the water of oxygen and ultimately harms all the other life there. So fetch out the netting to give the pond some temporary protection until the worst of the leaf fall is done. The club holds its AGM and Harvest Supper on September 26th and this gives us the chance to review the year past and hear about plans for the future. The AGM will start at 6.30pm in the United Reformed Church so that we can move on to the Supper at 7.30. Soft drinks will be provided or bring your own and the usual entrance charge of £2 will be waived if you bring a contribution to the feast.

New Group For Children & Young People Thetford Woodcraft Folk has started up a new group for children and young people. Members of the movement take part in weekly group nights, and have opportunities to go on residential and camping trips with their peers. Woodcraft Folk is a national charity which aims to provide education for social change but until now the nearest groups have been too far away to reach young people in and around Thetford. Young people from Thetford now have the opportunity to take part, starting with a Pioneer group for 9 - 12 year olds run by local volunteers which has been running this term. In September the district is hoping to expand by opening new groups for young people age 6-9 and 13-15. Activities are centred on co-operative principles with games including everyone and promoting teamwork. Children are given many opportunities to directly lead and make decisions in the group, supporting each other to create an environment for nurturing self confidence and building strong friendships. The organisation encourages youth to understand and participate in their local, national and international communities, whilst having lots of fun together. A typical group night might include co-operative games, activities exploring current social justice topics, bushcraft skills, arts, crafts and singing. The new group in Thetford is part of a wider project supporting Woodcraft Folk to grow in East Anglia, funded jointly by Department for Digital Culture Media and Sport and the Big Lottery Fund. Development Officer Susan Jones said “We are excited to be working on the new groups project and bringing the opportunity to join Woodcraft Folk to even more children and young people across the region. Opening a group in Thetford has been a huge milestone and is thanks to the hard work of volunteers who have come forward to lead the group.

Celebrate Local Produce This Harvest Discover the abundance of locally produced food this September when St Gregory’s Church, Barnham hosts its first community Farmer’s Market. The local area is home to a wide range of producers. Stalls include bespoke spice mixes from Curry With Love, local honey, homemade fudge, local sausages from Barnham, free range eggs, Flavoured tonic waters (including exciting flavours such as rhubarb and ginger), apple juice and cakes baked by the Women’s Institute. Refreshments include a BBQ using Euston Estate meat and Criterion ice cream from Thurston. Organiser Revd Sue Nutt said, “This market is all about bringing the community together in the wonderful setting of St Gregory’s churchyard. We are delighted to be able to offer people the chance to come together this harvest time and sample some of the wonderful local produce on our doorstep. Nothing will have travelled further than 10 miles, so it really is local at its best. We don’t have any shops in the village, we don’t have a pub, just the school and the church but we can come together as a community for events such as this.” Revd Nutt is hoping that to be able to hold a regular

Farmers market at St Gregory’s every 3 months, with a Christmas Market planned for early December. Barnham Farmers Market is open from 10am – 2pm on Saturday September 14th, St Gregory’s Church, Euston Road, Barnham, IP24 2NJ. For more information call Revd Sue Nutt on 07818 670124

New Conservation Group Launched A brand new conservation group is being launched in Thetford aiming to give a wide range of people the chance to get close to nature and help look after some of the town’s fantastic green open spaces – which include a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a scheduled ancient monument, two woodlands and large stretches of beautiful riverside. Thetford Conservation Group will run free activities every Thursday, with a mixture of practical conservation tasks and opportunities to learn more about local natural history. “You don’t have to be physically fit or strong, or have any previous knowledge or experience in order to take part”, said Thetford Town Council’s new Countryside and Planning Officer Mark Webster, who has been running projects like this since 1993, “Anyone over 18 can join in and make a positive difference for local wildlife.”

An Orchid spotted on Town Council land recently

Council’s Amenities, Land and Property Committee, said “We are very lucky to have so many wonderful green spaces freely accessible to the public on our doorsteps. This new group will give local people the chance to meet new people and learn new skills, whilst helping to improve our special wildlife habitats.”

The group will tackle a wide variety of tasks, from bringing abandoned allotment plots back into use, to helping conserve rare wildflower species on Barnham Cross Anyone interested in joining in with any of the group’s Common and HP planting and trees. Hazardous Waste Events Across Norfolk In September And October For the sixteenth year running, Norfolk's residents can get rid of unwanted household chemicals, safely and securely, at a series of household hazardous waste events at seven of Norfolk County Council's recycling centres this September and October. Waste is hazardous if it can cause harm to humans or the environment. This type of waste is not normally accepted at recycling centres as it needs to be dealt with by specialist waste disposal contractors. The annual events give people an opportunity to safely dispose of their hazardous waste such as wood preservatives, insecticides, weed killers, paint, thinners, varnishes and special cleaning products. Cllr Andy Grant, Cabinet Member for Environment & Waste, said: “We all need to dispose of hazardous waste very carefully so this is why we offer these free events across the county each year to help people get rid of a range of hazardous items safely and responsibly. Leftover paint is the number one item brought to our annual events. But I’d always urge people to save a car journey by following one of our top tips – firstly to plan any DIY job very carefully to cut the amount of paint left over. And if you can’t use up that little bit of leftover paint, or give it away, remember to dry it out and you can then put the tin in your kerbside rubbish bin.” Janice Coglin-Hibbert, Waste Reduction Officer at Norfolk County Council, said: “These are very popular events so you are likely to find queues. The sites are open until 5pm in September so please come later in the day if possible”.

To help with this identification and sorting people are urged to: • Keep containers clearly labelled where possible • Keep all products in their original containers and not mix them together • Make sure that the products are properly sealed to avoid leakage

Thetford Society News The Thetford Society August meeting could have been a disaster, only days before he was due to appear our booked guest speaker cancelled due to ill health. After several panicky phone calls and announcing that we were having a mystery evening, a stand in speaker was found. And how lucky we were with our replacement; we were treated to a trip down Memory Lane back to the 1950’s courtesy of Lois Gill from the Petal and Purl group. Many people may have recently seen some of Lois and her team’s work covered by local and national media, they held a Spectacular Festival in the Norfolk village of Caston inspired by the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and the twist was that everything was knitted! Literally everything, from near life sized people, kitchens - including food and appliances, the Queen at her Coronation to pigeons and a wireless set. Lois brought along with her three of the figures and a wonderful selection of other knitted items and led us through the story of how the group came about. It was a charming evening and everyone agreed what a talented bunch the Petal and Purl lot are. If you are interested in discovering more about what they do, there is website called Petal and Purl and also a Facebook page.

Summer Singing Workshop Success Young people aged between 6 and 16 enjoyed two full days of singing during the latest Thetford Voices Workshop, called The Strong Song Sing. Leaders John Weeks, Sarah Skinner and Polina Sosnina took the groups through a full programme that would have tested the best of adult singers, ready for a performance at the end of the second day. Family and friends joined the Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Brenda Canham for a superb performance. Addressing the audience John weeks said, “The Strong Song Theme produced a nice range of material, heroic actions, becoming strong and helping to be strong. Congratulations to all the children, I think they’ve come up trumps” From the opening number, ‘Freedom is coming’ to the very end of the programme the audience was absolutely enthralled. The Hakka performed by both groups was worthy of striking fear into any rugby team. “That was awesome!” one audience member exclaimed. The younger group used actions along with some of their songs and melted everyone’s hearts whilst the older group demonstrated their vocal power with beautiful harmonies and clever rallies. The quality of their performance was outstanding considering they had only learnt the songs the previous day. It was clear that both groups had put in an enormous amount of work during the workshops.

How Acne Impacts On All Ages Acne is undoubtedly one of the most common disorders to be treated by dermatologists and as a skin care therapist we can really help with dealing with the condition. It is estimated that more than 90% of the world’s population is affected by acne at some point in their lives. Although, Acne is more commonly associated with teenagers, it actually affects many in adult life on and off for many years. It maybe classed as a skin disorder but it has also been linked to both emotional and psychological problems, such as low self esteem and depression. It effects women and men of all ages and in adults can be really painful. Many causes can be linked to hormones, stress, diet, health and lifestyle and skin sensitivity. Using the wrong products can actually worsen the condition. Depending on the severity, it may be advisable to seek professional medical guidance to ensure they receive the correct treatment for the seriousness of the problem. In the skincare salon, we can offer treatments to exfoliate, help remove excess sebum, calm the skin if inflamed and create a customised homecare routine. Using topical products to help boost exfoliation, stop the build up of dead skin cells and reduce the chance of scarring. We have also found the use of our Intense Pulse Light has been extremely effective at helping to treat acne and reduce scarring by encouraging the production of the skin’s own collagen.

Breckland Cats Protection Following last month's article seeking homes for 2 of or our long-stay cats, both have now found fantastic new families. With the kitten season in full swing I need to remind you of the importance of neutering. New adopters at Cat’s Protection receive a voucher which pays for the full cost of the operation at a vets of their choice, ensuring that all our cats are neutered. However, if you have obtained a kitten from someone else, please make sure he or she is neutered as the cat population is ever-expanding. Kittens should be neutered at 4 months of age when they weigh 2kg. Females in particular can come into season at 4-5 months old and by 6 or 7 months old they can have a litter of kittens. If you need help with the cost of neutering please call us on the number given below and we will help you. We recently sent a neutering voucher to a member of the public who got in touch and asked for our help. Unfortunately, he mislaid the voucher and his female cat became pregnant. Sadly, there were complications at the birth and the little cat ended up at the vets with a bill of £700!! Pleased be warned, it is advisable to get your cat neutered early.

They come with 28 days free pet insurance and their adoption fee is £60 each which goes towards their vet bill. If you are interested in meeting these beautiful girls, please call us on 01842 810018 or if you need help or advice or assistance with the cost of neutering. We are here to help you. Rita Thompson

This month we are looking for homes for two lovely girls: Pearl and Pippa. They came into our care after a traumatic experience in their previous home. New To Training If you’re new to training or overweight and just recently started training OR you’re one of the lucky ones who remains slim but has a poor diet you’ll probably feel uncomfortable before, during or after exercise! I’ve chosen the word ‘uncomfortable’ but there are better words that I’m not allowed to write but we all know what I mean, don’t we? That feeling where the body starts to heat up, our heartbeat rises, the lungs are taking more air in more often, our sweat glands open filling our clothes with the tears of fat and sometimes we can start to lose our heads a bit! Guess what, it’s natural!! The great thing is that the more consistent you are with making fitness a priority, the better you’ll feel during and after fitness, the faster you’ll recover and actually, the more you’ll enjoy it too! I recently remembered just how much I hate that feeling! It was the Tuesday after going to a festival. The Monday was a write off (obviously) and Tuesday wasn’t much better. I’d relaxed my ethics and gone on a day sesh with a few pals, neglecting my food routine and exchanging it with beer and spirits. By the time we got back to the hotel, I hadn’t eaten anything all day and I’d returned to a share bag of Kettle Chips – I ate them all! When it was time to train I felt awful! Lethargic, slow, un energised and totally unable to do what I normally can BUT I did it, it was horrible but all those toxins had started to make their way out of my system and after, I genuinely felt better. What I’m trying to say is nothing good is never easy and anything easy is never good. Start today, let me know how you feel next month. Richard Taylor Richard Taylor runs Tiger Fitness. Parkrunner Of The Month Our parkrunners of the month are a husband and wife team, Alan Dean and Agnieszka (Anna) Dean. Anna was injured and couldn’t train or run and was inspired by a friend to register for parkrun in 2014. Anna's aim of joining parkrun was to volunteer and marshal as a way of keeping in touch with the running community. Soon Anna started to run again and she enjoyed the Saturday parkruns at Brandon. Anna's best time for that course was 25 minutes and 54 seconds. Alan also registered with the aim of improving fitness and meeting other people. Unfortunately in October 2016 Anna was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis which left her unable to walk. Anna thought her running career was over and wasn’t even sure if she could walk again. Thankfully with advanced medical help from her rheumatologist consultants, nurses, Anna's family, friends and as a result of her own determination, Anna started to very slowly walk again. Anna re-joined Thetford parkrun. At first Anna walked but gradually she started to try to run more and more. Anna started to make many more friends and enjoyed the company from the lovely people at Thetford park run. Anna's best time for the course is 26 minutes and 36 seconds. Anna's slowest time is 57 minutes and 08 seconds when volunteering as tail walker. Anna has completed 74 parkruns. Alan has completed 149 parkruns - the fastest 5k is 25 minutes and 59 seconds. Alan's slowest parkrun is the same as his wife when they volunteered together. Alan also enjoys supporting others to achieve their running goals. Both Alan and Anna can be seen running the 5k route with their Border Collie Blue merle, Dobbie. Dobbie has completed over 200 park runs and is a firm favourite with the parkrunners.

Football For Jordan RAF Honington recently hosted the RAF Regiment football team kicking off with two fundraising football matches. Norfolk teams East Harling and Thetford Town played the RAF Regiment in support of fundraising for RAF Serviceman Flight Sergeant Jordan Brown, who in 2017 was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour. Jordan loves football and said that he hoped to relight his own desire to raise more to live longer. Neither local team were a match for the RAF Regiment and both were greatly defeated with East Harling losing 4-1 and Thetford Town’s final score 10-1 to the Regiment. Tom Morton, manager for the RAF Regiment Football Club said: “We put together a very strong 20man squad for the 2 days, the lads were excellent and it’s a pleasure to work with such a talented and professional set of blokes. To manage my Corps team is always an honour, to put a squad together to help one of our own and to see Jordan and his family smile is the ultimate, it doesn’t get any better.” Over 20 Servicemen made up the Regiment team, some from Honington with others travelling from RAF Brize Norton, RAF Leeming, and RAF Northolt to support the match and their fellow Serviceman. Supporters and local donations at the match made nearly £500 in total which will go towards medical treatment for Jordan who is currently looking at options in Canada or the MD Anderson Centre in America. He has come to the end of the road with the NHS capability here at home and health insurance is proving difficult as he has now out lived his diagnosis. During the last 2 years we’ve seen leopard crawling around the camp perimeter, tractor tyre flipping, coffee mornings, bake-off’s and many anonymous donations.

Two of the players in action at the recent fundraising football match

A Go Fund Me page was set up whereby Jordan says he was ‘astonished by the amount of RAF and Tri-Service personnel as well as complete strangers that have donated.’ Just to send Jordan’s medical notes to America will cost them $20,000.

The Team would like to thank all the players, staff, supporters and of course East Harling and Thetford Town Football Clubs for their team1 spirit and support Mr G's QP Advert.qxp_Layout 11/01/2018 16:20 Page to the event.
