Children ‘Go Nuts’ for School Art Competition Judging took place recently for Shadwell’s annual school art competition with the standard of entries as ever very high. Eight schools took part and Shadwell’s Chris Kennard had a difficult job judging the entries: “Congratulations must be given to all the children, who created such a colourful display and imaginative approach. Shadwell selected the delightful red squirrel this year to highlight the sad fact that they are declining in numbers and classified as an endangered species. The winning squirrel, ‘Hazel Nut’ from Bishops Church of England Primary Academy made the best use of every part of their statue” Mayor of Thetford, Councillor Denis Crawford said that he was very happy that he did not have to judge as the competition was very good. He added, “We are very proud again to have this here in King’s House Gardens”.

All eight squirrels will be on display in King’s House Gardens for two weeks from Monday 21st August. This year Shadwell will be giving schools the option to raise further funds by auctioning the squirrels. Look out for more information on how you might buy one soon. School Art Competition Results: Bishops Church of England VA, ‘Hazel Nut’ - First Redcastle Family School, ‘Conserve & Preserve’ - Second

‘Hazel Nut’ wins £2,000 for Bishops Academy, with £1,000 for second place Squirrel ‘Conserve & Preserve’ from Redcastle Family School and third place ‘Steve’ winning £500 for Raleigh Infant School & Nursery. All highly commended winners receive £100.

Raleigh Infant School & Nursery, ‘Steve’ - Third The following were all highly commended: Barnham Primary School, ‘Ruth’ Drake Infant School & Nursery, ‘Skittles’ East Harling Primary School, ‘Spirit’ Admirals Academy, ‘Wirrel’ Norwich Road Academy, ‘Acorn’

Liz Russell Deputy Head Redcastle Family School said: “We’re delighted to have taken part in this great community event and are thrilled to come second”.

Local Author Launches New Book Local historian and author David Osborne is launching his latest book in his Inns, Pubs and Beerhouses series this month. Friends and fans of David’s work (which also includes the Past and Present page) are invited to join him on 3.30pm, Wednesday 7th September at The Red Lion on Thetford’s market place, for a book signing and brief introduction to his new publication. Now under the management of Wetherspoons, the building itself belongs to the people of Thetford through the ownership of Thetford Town Council, occupying its present site since 1838. Originally The Red Lion stood where the war memorial now stands; the site it now occupies was known as ‘the townhouse’ and was purchased by the Corporation 401 years ago with money bequeathed by Margaret Eden. As with many of Thetford’s old inns, The Red Lion has had a varied history, it has been a school, the Baptist Church held their meetings in the stables and one of the rooms was used as a court house.

Dad’s Army Museum Update The season has been very busy so far with numbers on a par with those of the last three years which has seen 10,000 visitors each year. As well as the thousands that flock to the museum on Saturdays and Tuesdays, visitors are increasingly taking advantage of the walking tours that take in many of the filming locations around Thetford. This year more tours than ever have taken place and they book up very quickly and there are more to come. In addition, the museum has run bus tours to some of the outlying filming locations – the first two booked very quickly such that a third is now planned in October. Details as always on the museum’s web site: www.dadsarmythetford.org.uk

Many regular visitors come in to have a cup of tea and home- made cake in our lovely Marigold Tea Room. Our volunteers are often trying new WWII cake recipes so there is often something new to try. Our Jones’ van has also been to the City of London to take part in the Cart Marking event courtesy of Ian Lavender. Free Concert The Salvation Army, Magdalen Street, Thetford Saturday, 7th October @ 7pm by Norfolk Choral Fellowship Collection will be taken on behalf of the work of Salvation Army All are welcome

Buon Viaggio U3A!

Thetford Rotary Club

The Holiday Group travelled to the Italian Riviera in June and enjoyed the hot weather and atmosphere thoroughly! They visited Lucca, Pisa, Cinque Terre villages, Portofino, ate pasta and pizzas, drank Chianti and revelled in the Italian way of life. Bellissimo!

The Rotary Club of Thetford recently held a charity band concert in the Carnegie Rooms featuring the Breckland Brass Band with some help from members of the Newmarket Brass band.

The Breckland Brass Band, pictured above, have not performed in Thetford for many years and were delighted to be back. The band last played in King’s House gardens and on this occasion they played a variety of different music from popular to traditional and a solo singer with a first class voice performed in each part of the show. Many thanks to the public who supported this most enjoyable evening. The concert raised over £400 for local and international charities. To find out more about Thetford and District Rotary Club please contact Gary Goodchild, Membership & PR Officer by email: thetfordrotary1@gmail.com

This visit has left some eager to learn Italian, so the U3A would like to find someone with enthusiasm and knowledge to start an Italian language group. Our group coordinators will give all the help needed. Anyone interested? If you want to join the Holiday group on their next trip to the Isle of Wight or learn more about all our other activities, come to our next monthly talk (Gemstones by Jason Middleton) at the Carnegie on Thursday 28th September starting at 1.45 pm (£2 for non-members). New members are always welcome! For more info, visit: www.thetfordu3a.org

St Mary’s Row stood under the shadow of the tower of St Mary’s Church for many years, until the early 1960s when the flint built cottages and houses were demolished. Brandon Engine House Opening The Breaking New Ground Landscape Partnership and Suffolk County Council’s Brandon Country Park were delighted to open the newly restored Brandon Engine House at Brandon Country Park on Wednesday 9th August. Brandon Park was a large estate of almost 3,000 acres and in the late 19th century, an Engine House was built over the well to mechanise the process of drawing water up for use in the mansion and auxiliary buildings on site. Later on, the engine also produced electricity for the site. Once mains electricity reached the Park, the Engine House continued to provide water for the estate and was used as a workshop for many years. More recently the building was used for storage, as a kennels and workshop, while slowly deteriorating through lack of maintenance.

The Project Team. Volunteers John Bowes - centre left and Ronald Rule - centre right

at Brandon Country Park. It will be used by the park, local community groups and organisations, providing a new venue to deliver training, run volunteer workshops, events and meetings. The buildings were officially opened by Ronald Rule, a 91-year-old project volunteer, who was born at Brandon Park, just a few yards from the buildings themselves. His father was the chauffeur for the estate owners and looked after the collection of motor vehicles they owned as well as the Engine House machinery. New interpretation panels have been installed in the engine room, which celebrate the history of the Park and buildings, along with lighting in the well, allowing us to see down all 150ft for the first time!

The Breaking New Ground LP, hosted by Suffolk County Council and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, have now completed a programme of restoration of the Engine House and Bothy, connecting the two with a brand-new link building. The work was carried out by Suffolk company Gipping Construction. This fantastic Premier Paving.qxp_Layout 1 12/06/2017 13:13 new resource, owned by BNG partners the Forestry Commission, will be leased and managed by the team

Matthew Hicks, Suffolk County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Protection said “SCC is delighted to have been involved in a wonderful project that has brought such a historically significant building back into use at Brandon Country Park. It presents an opportunity for visitors to the building to understand the role it played in providing power and water to the main house, and will provide a fantastic Page 1 new venue for local groups and organisations to meet, train and hold events.”

Thetford Society

Win a set of Dishwasher Safe Placemats and Coasters, in your choice of colour

Our August meeting began with the Chairman reminding us of the AGM at the beginning of September, to which we should bring our annual subscription fee. It was also stated that the increase of £1.00 on all membership types would take affect from this meeting.

worth £24.80!

Intech Developments Ltd, based in Bury St Edmunds have a 4x4 set (4 placemats, 4 coasters) to giveaway to one of our lucky readers! Available in 13 colours , you can soak them in a sink or leave them outside in the rain. The stain resistant, shatterproof mats are also heat resistant to 140°C and ideal for protecting your dining table. Unlike silicone mats, these mats are not floppy but are lightweight enough not to damage tiled floors if you drop them.

We were lucky this month to not receive one but two guest speakers, Phyllida Scrivens and the subject of her first published book Joe Stirling.

“Does exactly as described. Very hardwearing and cleans up a treat in the dishwasher, result!!” Amazon customer.

Phyllida gave a quick introduction and then stepped aside to allow Joe to begin his recollection. With a mind as sharp as a pin, 92 year old Joe recounted his incredible story as a young German Jewish boy who escaped the Nazis. After a failed attempt to make his own way to England when he was only 14 he was eventually transported on the Kinder train just before the beginning of WWII. He went on to tell of his battles to learn English and to fight in the war against the Germans, both of which he succeeded to do. After his discharge from the Army he settled in Norfolk, the home county of his wife Jean. They went on to have 4 children, his eldest daughter was born here in Thetford. The rest of Joe’s life has not been as harrowing as his early days, but it has been no less eventful, he is a well known and highly regarded citizen of Norwich where in the 1970’s he held the esteemed position of Sheriff. He is still involved with many charities and organisations today.

To win a 4x4 set please email your FULL details to info@leapinghare.org by Friday September 29th. The winner will be the first name randomly selected and will be notified by Friday October 6th.

Care Home Residents Tesco Trip A group of residents from Ford Place Care Home recently enjoyed a day out at Tesco Thetford. For most of us a trip to the supermarket might not seem much like a treat, however for the group it is somewhere they don’t normally go to and just being in such a busy environment made a change to their normal day to day activities. Community Champion at Tesco, Sarah Douthwaite regularly visits Ford Place and helps with activities such as bingo, flower arranging and spending one to one time with residents. “I would like to work with some of the other residential homes in the town. Sarah has been busy recently supporting TADDS, the Charles Burrell Centre and Fusion amongst others. During one of her visits the group mentioned they’d like a trip out so with the help of colleague Tracy Thomas, Sarah decided to lay on a roast dinner followed by a walk round the shop. Sarah explained, “I enjoy going to Ford Place. I like to put a smile on the resident’s faces, or at least try to have a giggle with them. After the success of this visit, I’ll be looking into ways of bringing the residents out more. All the food was cooked by me and Tracy in the staff canteen. The residents had a table laid out for them and colleagues got up from their breaks to help serve meals.”

Ask The Undertaker

Well Frank, this is a very easy one to answer. If you are to be cremated you will definitely be cremated in your own coffin, this has to be done as a suitable coffin has to be used for health and safety reasons. It doesn’t matter what kind of coffin you have as long as it complies to regulations set out by the Cremation Authority. Coffins can be made from cardboard, willow, or an easily combustible timber construction, these may be veneered thereby they look just like solid wood but are much more sensible both in cost and their impact on the environment.

Here’s the second installment of our new monthly column from Mark Skinner where you get to ‘Ask the Undertaker’.

Q "I am planning to give my body for medical research. However, I am a Christian and believe I should still have a religious 'send-off'. How would that work?" John, Thetford John – That should not be a problem, we usually find that a memorial service can be arranged in the same way as a funeral would be, the only difference is that there would be no coffin present at the Church as the School of Anatomy would need to take you into their care quite quickly. It would mean that friends and family would still be able to pay their respects to you and that you would be able to have a Christian Funeral.

With regard to the cost of coffins, they don’t have to be expensive. These days there are many to choose from ranging from very simple to totally personalised print designs and elaborate caskets. The important thing to remember is that this is all about personal choice and what you feel is right for you. As Funeral Directors we are here to give you all the choices and price information that you require.

Q “Will my body be cremated in the coffin I've paid for or will I be taken out and the wood recycled? The reason I ask is that I might as well have a cheap cardboard coffin if it's going to get burned. It seems such a waste to splend a lot on a fancy coffin if it's just going to go up in smoke! Frank, Thetford

Lindsay’s Story Lindsay Dixon-Iles served as one of the ‘Mayor’s Ambassadors’ last year as part of a campaign to help inspire young people in Thetford. In this article she speaks with About Thetford Assistant Editor KarenEmma White about her story.

How did you feel when you were asked to become a Youth Ambassador? “I was very apprehensive. I wasn't sure I could offer anything to the role. Being low on self confidence because of bullying, I didn't believe I had achieved anything”. What did you aspire to be when you were at school? “I never really wanted to ‘be’ anything at school, other than when I was small and wanted to be a princess. I always just wanted to be the best mother I could be and have a great family. I never really thought I could be anything else other than a mother and wife. I grew up believing university was for people who wanted to be doctors and lawyers. I never got, or was open to the support I needed while thinking about college. So when I became pregnant at 16 it was an easy way out of education and into a life I thought I always wanted. School was always a 50/50 experience for me. I struggled with the learning aspect, I had problems with concentration and I could never keep up with others and I felt that I couldn’t go to the teachers for help because they wouldn’t listen to me and help because I was seen as ditzy so I didn’t bother to ask questions when I really should have. The pros to school for me were the great small circle of friends that I had, some of which are still my friends, 20 years later. There were a few bad eggs in that group that I knew at the time weren’t great friends for me and there was subtle bullying and manipulation going on but when you are a teenager you try to please everyone and you worry so much about what people think of you. If I could tell my 16 year old self anything now, it would be to listen to my gut and to know who my true friends are and to not be afraid to be myself. To have fun with friends but to put yourself and your future first because in 20 years, you probably won’t have those same friends and if you are lucky enough to still have them, then they will want the best for you.”

Lindsay Dixon-Iles - who has recently gone back to college and completed a Diploma in Art and Design

sister-in-law and telling her how nervous I was and how I was going to give up on the whole idea, she told me about how West Suffolk College offers these kinds of courses, she works for West Suffolk at the CBC and helped me with finding the information I needed and helped me sign up to the course I wanted”. What made you feel that you couldn’t be anything more than you wanted? “I think that because I had all my life priorities in the wrong order and because I grew up in a very traditional household, where the men worked and the women stayed home, kept house, and raised the children that is all I saw for my future. It just wasn’t for regular people. This thought was magnified while in high school because university was never spoken of. College was seen as the highest education possible and I had no real ambition by that point so being pregnant and starting a family sounded great to me. It is just so different now. My Daughter has been learning about the

Car Parts & Accessories, Audio, Batteries, Starter Motors, Number Plates & much more Trade Welcome, Local Delivery Service

What made you decide to go back to education? “When my daughter started to think about her GCSE’s, I started to think about my life and what I had accomplished. After thinking about what I wanted to do and what I was good at, I decided to do an interior design course online. While discussing this with my

process of university since the end of year 9. She knows all of her options - she’s very lucky”. What has been the highlight of your past year in education? “I originally signed up to do an interior design course; but because I had had such a big gap in education I had to do an access course to get me back into the swing of things as it were. I wasn’t very happy about this at first because I was not interested in doing an Art course but It ended up being the best thing I could have done. I have had one of the best years of my life, I was pushed out of my comfort zone constantly, I connected with new amazingly talented people, I got to curate a gallery exhibition, where I sold a piece of my art and I passed my course with distinction which I never thought I could do, the whole year has been a highlight because it has made me realise who I am as a person and that I can achieve anything I want to, even if I get scared, I just have to take the first step”. Did your highlight inspire you to move onto something else? If so - what? “My time doing the Foundation Diploma Art and Design course at West Suffolk College has been hard work but also so brilliant and I don’t want to stop learning and not just about art, the course has opened something in me that I never knew was there, I have a thirst for learning and information now that wasn’t there before and I love it”. What are your next steps? “The next steps for me are to continue my education. The past year has inspired me to attend the University of Suffolk and study Graphic and Communication Design and go into publishing when I graduate. I did very badly in my GCSE’s 16 years ago and I didn’t leave myself many options but there are so many more choices now that weren’t there when I was 16. A letter or number on a piece of paper at 16 years old does not determine how the rest of your life turns out”.

Some of Lindsay’s work on display at her exhibition at West Suffolk College

As a community, what could we do to support the aspirations of our young people? “I think the most important thing we can teach children is that getting an education is the most important thing they can do. They mustn’t take education for granted, it is such a privilege that we have and that so many don’t. My children have been my motivation all the way through, I have struggled the past year doing my course but I kept going for them”. What’s the best thing about being a Thetfordian? “I just love it here, it is pretty central to anywhere else you may need to go. It has good amenities, the people are lovely and it is so beautiful”. Note from Karen: Thanks to Lindsay for sharing her story. I found it to be a really inspiring story and I’m grateful for her honesty and openess which shines through in this article. start dividing herbaceous perennials and improving the balance of a border. Spring flowering bulbs are now on sale and they are worth the outlay for that early splash of colour. Just remember the muntjac will eat your tulips so stick with daffodils in vulnerable areas.

Thetford Garden and Allotment Club This summer I was amazed by the national rhubarb collection in the walled garden at Clumber Park; they have 150 different strains of rhubarb! If you see your neighbour has a particularly fine plant it is worth asking for a chunk of the root as the plants have to be split up every few years to refresh their growth and you need a plant that is suited to local conditions. Clumber Park is a National Trust property and a great place to take a break if you are travelling on the A1 near Worksop, they even serve their rhubarb in the café. In the veg patch you should still be picking Autumn raspberries which are one fruit birds and other pests don’t seem to attack. If you have potatoes still in the ground, they should be lifted before slugs cause damage. Let them dry in the fresh air to harden the skin before storing in paper sacks or cardboard boxes to keep them dark and dry for the winter. If you have had problems with storing onions it might be worth spreading them out again to make sure that they are fully dry before storing in small nets – alternatively you could plait them in ropes to hang up in the traditional style – either way it is the circulation of dry air which is essential for onions to keep. The lawn would reward you for time spent scarifying and aerating – even our light soil gets compacted after a summer of use. Then a treatment with an Autumn lawn feed high in potassium will help the grass harden up for winter. This is also the time to set about creating a new lawn with turf or seed – the cooler, damper conditions help the new grass get established. Looking ahead to next year, you can

Mysteries Of Our Nearest Neighbours Two years ago, on the August Bank Holiday, I was helping to run a bird ringing demonstration at the BTO, when a local man appeared with a baby bird. It was a tiny House Martin, whose nest had been destroyed by predators and its parents and siblings were gone. Usually, our advice is to put young birds back in the nest, or to leave them for their parents to look after if they’re close by, but in this case, neither was possible, so I raised it myself. Over the next fortnight, I watched ‘Martin’ grow from a fluffy chick to a sleek flying machine. I took him to work with me – my BTO colleagues had no problem with him sitting on my desk or joining us in meetings – and let him practice his flight skills in my living room. Once his feathers were fully grown, I started taking him to local House Martin colonies, like the one at the power station on the Little Ouse. After a couple of these outings, when he just listened to and watched the other birds flying overhead, he one day left my finger and took to the air. He flew around my head cheeping several times, and then joined the rest of the flock, until eventually I lost sight of him. That was in mid-September. Martin presumably made his way south with the rest of the flock, but we don’t know where to. Despite living so close to us during the breeding season, we have very little idea where in Africa our House Martins go during our winter. Only one ringed bird from Britain has been found south of the Sahara, and the sort of tracking technology we use at BTO to uncover the migration mysteries of other species is not yet small enough to safely fit on a 19g House Martin.

Let Your Hands Do The Talking!

Halcyon Days

It is often said that our hands show our real age! This cannot however be the case for everyone as treatments are now available to reverse the signs of skin ageing. Many people try lotion and creams to brighten their hands but this can be slow to show results as our hands are in constant use and it’s hard to keep creams on when every time you wash your hands the cream comes off!

Skin Care & Laser clinic

IPL Hair Removal IPL Skin Rejuvenation

Â

Permanent make up Dermalogica Facials Eve Taylor Facials Opi Nail Treatments

The reason our hands tend to show more signs of ageing is because we expose them to all weathers and the sun / ultra violet light is the number one cause. Today Age spots, and pigmentation can be treated very successfully in as little as 1-3 treatments using Intense Pulse Light ( IPL for short). The energy from the light is attracted to the pigment in the skin, this causes it to heat up and turn darker immediately after treatment. A few days later, the dark patches will shed from the hands and the new skin will be brighter. This treatment is known as skin rejuvenation and can be used for many things such as sun damage, age spots, freckles, enlarged pores and acne. It is suitable for use on the body and face. Several clients like to have it as a facial treatment, as the skin will be tightened and firmer with the production of collagen and elastin. As with all IPL treatments a consultation, including medical history and patch test must be carried out prior to any treatments. Best wishes, Lisa Stallings

Lovely Lavender

What benefits does it have to offer? Acne: Lavender is one of the most valuable oils for the treatment of acne. It has anti-bacterial effects, helps to rebalance the production of oils in the skin, plus reduce scarring. Insomnia: To help induce sleep, pop a few drops of lavender oil on a tissue inside your pillow or duvet. Muscular aches and fatigue: Add a few drops into some Epsom salts and add to a hot bath to soothe tired muscles. Eczema: Massage a few drops of lavender mixed with a carrier oil such as Sweet Almond oil and massage into itchy, dry skin. Menstrual Cramps: Massage a few drops of lavender oil to your lower abdomen or add to a hot compress onto the area.

This month I wanted to share the wonderful benefits of Lavender, after I got to complete one off my “bucket list” and actually go to the fields. I got to pick the lavender and then arrange it to be used within my beautiful handmade products such as floral water, oils and bath bombs. How amazing is that? I got to pick it straight from the fields, prepare it for the next process of drying and then actually get to make the handmade product it goes into. What an amazingly rewarding feeling to see it go through the whole process.

There are many more I could add to this list. But hopefully this has given you some ideas of how else you can use it. Look out for all our lovely handmade products from Stepping Stones Emporium coming your way just in time for dare I say…….Christmas!! Find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Too busy?

Love & Sparkles, Caroline King caroline@steppingstonestrainingacademy.co.uk

So, I personally feel lavender as a plant, has a bit of a hard time because many associate it with their Nans or Grannys from years ago as being old and frumpy. When it has so much more to offer than just the scent. Granted, its scent I feel, is lovely and sweet depending on the variety of lavender you use. But I do get that it’s not to everyone’s taste.

Breckland Cats Protection You may recall that I recently wrote about Dora, a cat in our care who suffered a collar injury, due to an ill fitting collar. Dora managed to get her front leg through the collar, causing a large split to occur where her leg meets her body. She was seen several times by our vet, who tried to stitch the split together, but because it is a moving joint, the stitches just pulled out again. The only solution he could recommend was to remove the front leg. This is a bit drastic because there is nothing wrong with her leg, so Dora was referred to a specialist centre where they have a Soft Tissue department. She is now receiving oxygen treatment which means she is put into a hyperbaric chamber several times a day where she receives 100% oxygen at 1.5 - 3 times normal atmospheric pressure. This treatment enhances wound healing and Dora is doing very well. It is hoped that the wound will heal enough to allow them to stitch it back together. All the nurses at the hospital love Dora, as she is so friendly and purrs all the time, despite the ordeal she is going through. However, this specialist treatment is likely to run into several thousand pounds and we are therefore appealing for funds to help us pay for Dora. We have a Just Giving site on our Facebook page ‘Cats Protection Breckland’, or you could send a cheque to Wendy Raphael, 113 Bury Road, Thetford, IP24 3DQ, or you can ring me on 01842 815550. The photograph (top right) is of Dora in her pen at the hospital, where she looks very comfortable. For help or advice, or assistance with the cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. Rita Thompson. Deadline for inclusion in the October edition will be the 15th September 2017. Send articles to: aboutthetfordmagazine@googlemail.com

The Amazing Story of Cable & Holmes

Schools Are Back! Now the children are returning to school. Have you found yourself thinking ‘What do I do for myself?’ ‘I would like to lose weight’ or ‘I want to get fitter’? We can help you! At The Core Studio we offer early morning classes straight after the school run. Suitable for the busy mum or carer, a quick 45-minute session of Pilates & Yoga, flowing to music is a guaranteed sweat! If you are looking to ease yourself into exercise we have a 1 hour traditional Pilates. I promise you will be amazed at what you can achieve.

Well Made Theatre will be performing a brand new play about one of Thetford’s most infamous inhabitants – Henry Cable, once incarcerated in Thetford Gaol. The play is based on the story of Henry and Susannah Holmes who were both charged separately for theft in 1783 and tried at the Thetford Assizes held in the Guildhall. Both Henry and Susannah initially received death sentences which were then commuted to transportation to the American colonies. Thomas Paine the most notable son of Thetford, had incited the colonies to revolution and with the birth of the USA, transportation was then changed to the Australian colonies. Henry and Susannah were held at Norwich Castle Gaol where they met and fell in love and had a child, Henry Junior. Permission to marry was refused and when the baby was 5 months old Susannah was separated from Henry and taken to Plymouth to await transportation. The Amazing Story of Henry and Susannah written by Vince Gregory tells the story of how with the help of Gaoler John Simpson, the couple were reunited and follows their story as they are transported to Australia. Using historical notes Vince discovered that Henry was probably the first person and the first prisoner to set foot on the cove which has since become Sydney Harbour. Henry and Susannah became the First Family by virtue of being the first non-indigenous family to have children who then grew up and had children of their own. Their journey from Thetford Assizes to taking part in Australia’s first wedding ceremony in 1788, will be played out by actors in full costume in the Guildhall and Small Court on the site of where their trials were originally held. The Amazing Story of Cable & Holmes, Saturday 16th September Doors Open 7pm. Tickets £9 from Leaping Hare Box Office, 20 King Street or: www.leapinghare.org

If Uni Is Not For You From my own personal experience, as you progress through school, the pressure that seems to be mounted upon you to ‘know your future’ increases. The idea that university is a crucial part of achieving a successful career is the belief in a lot of young people’s minds, an idea which I shared to begin with. It wasn’t until I was completing a week of work experience at Lovewell Blake, when I learned that the firm had an intake of new trainees each year, including school leavers. The firm offered fully funded professional qualifications alongside a fulltime job. I then realised that there are so many opportunities for young people to find career paths which will enable them to have successful careers and gain highly sought after, well respected qualifications. It was not long after completing my work experience that I applied to Lovewell Blake and was offered the job. At the time, I was still unsure what I wanted to do but the opportunity was there and so I took it. Three years on, working at Lovewell Blake has allowed me to gain experience in a professional environment, develop a range of skills and also expand my knowledge of accountancy. I have studied towards an AAT qualification with the hope to progress on to one day become a fully qualified chartered accountant. Aside from the various opportunities I have already had at Lovewell Blake, these qualifications will enable me to progress further in my career and will hopefully open a lot more doors.

Pictured: Alex Clark from Lovewell Blake shares his story about a career in accountancy

I attend various careers fairs on behalf of Lovewell Blake and always enjoy sharing my experience with younger students. We continuously update our website with new opportunities (www.lovewell-blake.co.uk/careers) and most recently have released a video ‘Life at Lovewell Blake’ which showcases the work ethic and amazing atmosphere at the firm.

Sound advice, that comes from knowing you well

How do I start running? You don’t need lots of fancy equipment to start running, but a new pair of shoes are essential. Worn-out shoes are a leading cause of injury, and often wear and tear isn’t obvious to the naked eye. Go to a running shop where you can get help finding a pair that offers the support and fit that your feet need. All you need then is the motivation to get out the door and run! Find your local running group or parkrun. Looking to push yourself? Are you looking to push yourself or for your next challenge? Why not find local running events like The Charles Burrell Centre 10k Forest Run on the 26th November 2017? Our annual Charles Burrell Centre 10k Forest Run is a crosscountry trail run across Barnham Common and surrounding forestry into the beautiful Breckland scenery. Entry is £15 (discount available for those that participated in our 5k Run in March) and includes a bespoke medal, refreshments and various goodies. Places are limited. The Power Of The Squat

What benefits will you get from squatting? Squatting is a great all rounder, not only will you strengthen and tone your legs, you’ll also tone and lift your butt, engage your core muscles and when using weights you’ll engage your upper body muscles. Squatting also creates more endurance in the legs, if you’re looking to get a better time at your local park run, training for a marathon or a race, squats will definitely provide your legs with the power they need.

We are always taught from an early age that when picking up things up off the ground, we’re to bend the knees, keep the back straight and push through the legs, creating lift. Basically, we’ve been taught how to squat for years! Squatting isn’t easy at all, there’s so many things to consider, so before you start your squat, check your stance. For best results, make sure you’re on flat ground with your feet shoulder width apart. Lock your heels in strong and begin to lower. As you lower, you need to push your bum out while keeping your back straight, making sure your knees don’t cover your view of your toes. Once you’ve hit a 90 degree angle, it’s time to come up. Push through your heels, keeping your back straight and pulling your chest up

PC or Laptop running SLOW? Got A Virus? Need help?

If you’re new to squatting, do not attempt with weight until you have the correct technique. A great way to learn is to squat in front of a mirror with a chair behind you. When you come down, you’re aiming for your butt to hit the edge of the chair, once you’ve just touched, it’s time to push back up and come to a standing position. If it fails, at least you can take a seat before trying again!
