A ‘Magical & Mystical’ Art Competition Following the success of the past six art competitions and the cheeky 'Squirrel Nutkin' in 2017 – Shadwell Estate went ‘Magical and Mystical’ this year and gave centre stage to some fabulous unicorns! Shadwell is one of the foremost Thoroughbred and Arabian horse breeding operations in the world and is rightly very proud of the work it does with the local community. Recently, Shadwell judges Mandy Forber and Sarah Exton had a difficult job but chose Starburst by Raleigh Infant and Nursery as the best - pictured on the front cover of this month’s magazine. Sarah Exton said: “A big thankyou to all the schools for the amazing effort that everyone has put in to making this another brilliant competition”. ‘Starburst’ wins £2,000 for Raleigh Infant School and Nursery, with £1,000 for second placed Unicorn ‘Unity’ from Garboldisham Primary and third place ‘Sheehan’ winning £500 for Barnham Primary. Bishops CE VA Primary, Admirals Academy, Drake Infant School and Nursery, Norwich Road Academy and Redcastle Furze Family School were all highly commended and win £100 each. The unicorns will be on display at the Charles Burrell Centre for the first week of September.

Represent your community and help shape future developments Do you live in or work in Brettenham, Croxton, Kilverstone or Thetford? Are you actively involved in your community with a good network of local contacts? Can you put forward ideas from the residents of the area you live in? Can you work positively and collaboratively? If so, this volunteer role may be for you! The Greater Thetford Development Partnership (GTDP) is currently seeking four Volunteer Community Representatives to join its Community Sub-Group. The GTDP is a strategic partnership made up of representatives from county, district and parish councils, working together on exciting projects to improve the lives of residents of Thetford and the parishes of Brettenham, Croxton and Kilverstone. As a member of the Community Sub-Group, the Volunteer Community Representatives will ensure future development in these areas is shaped by the views of local people, as the Sub-Group holds regular public meetings and then shares feedback with the overarching GTDP Board. More information about the GTDP and its Community Sub-Group can be found online at www.gtdp.org.uk. Application forms can be downloaded from www.gtdp.org.uk or obtained in hard copy by calling 01362 656870. The application deadline is noon on Monday 1 October. For informal enquiries, please call Cassie Ruffell, Breckland Council’s Regeneration Manager, 01362 656870. Applicants must be aged 18+ and live or work in the parishes of Brettenham, Croxton, Kilverstone or Thetford. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend an informal interview. Boundary Change Moves To Next Stage Further to previous articles published in the About Thetford magazine, we can report that a meeting recently took place in Dereham which resolved to recommend that Thetford’s parish boundary is indeed altered to incorporate the new housing due to be built on the edge of the town. This followed nearly 4,000 people participating in a consultation on whether or not the boundary should be moved with 3,855 people voting in favour of moving the boundary and just 92 wanting it to stay the same. People are now invited to have their say on the next stage. The consultation was announced earlier this month by Breckland Council's Community Governance Review sub-committee, who have recently been considering proposals put forward by the town council to extend its boundary. The Town Council wants to include the area of the Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE), to the North-East of the town, where up to 5,000 homes are expected to be built over the coming decades. People are being asked for their views on latest proposals to extend the boundary of the town council to include the parts of the SUE which are currently part of Croxton Parish Council, that being land from the south of the A11 to the west of the A1075. Under the proposals, the part of the SUE area which is currently in the parish of Kilverstone Parish Council would remain unchanged, but a future review may be carried out once development of the land takes place in future years. As part of the current consultation, people are also being invited to share their views on plans to increase the number of town council members by two additional councillors, from 16 to 18, who will represent the expanded town council area. Consultation participants are also able to suggest names for the proposed new town council ward.

Out and About Thetford

Annabel Discovers Whitenoise!

The weekend of the 10th August saw the return of VW Whitenoise Festival to Euston Park in Thetford. The festival, in its 16th year, has previously been held in a number of locations across East Anglia, but seems to have found an ideal home in its third year at the Euston Estate. Euston Park, a country estate set amidst over 70 acres, was transformed as stages went up in preparation for the 10,000 festival-goers expected to flock to Thetford over the course of the weekend. The festival, known for its relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere, saw groups come from all over East Anglia and further afield. Once again, the weekend did not disappoint and there was something for everyone to enjoy. On the Friday, festival-goers were treated to magic shows and music from a variety of performers on the two stages, with head-liners Killamonjambo and The Allergies going until the early hours. Saturday saw even more, and attendees were able to dance the night away with funky music from Lakuta, Shades of Rhythm and many more. Music was not the only thing on offer though, and the whole family had something to do with funfair rides, events and workshops running. On the Saturday a fancy dress competition themed ‘Jungle Safari’ saw some impressive leopard print and safari-style outfits, with even some pets getting involved! On the Sunday, despite waking up to some drizzling rain, festival-goers came together united by their passion for motoring in the Shine ‘n’ Show car show, with many polishing up and putting on display their renovated VW camper-vans and vintage vehicles. To fuel all these activities people were spoilt for choice. There were all sorts of food outlets including mac ‘n’ cheese, BBQ, curry, and Thai, and some delicious sweet treats were on offer at the pancake and doughnut stalls; you certainly were not going to go hungry. All in all it was another very successful and enjoyable year for the family-run festival, and looks highly promising for the future as it only gets bigger and better. “I’d never heard of Whitenoise before and was very pleasantly surprised! I had a great weekend. My highlight of the weekend was watching Lukuta, she was brilliant. I would definitely recommend Whitenoise, especially for families it’s a great weekend.” Annabel Kennard, Guest Writer for About Thetford magazine Whitenoise will return to Euston Park from 1st - 4th August 2019. Essex Cultural Diversity Project Returns To Thetford Gentle Indian music greeted the

audience when they arrived at Thetford Library for an afternoon of storytelling. Fresh from the Festival of Thetford & Punjab and back by popular demand, storytellers Seema Anand and Sarah Brady joined forces to tell stories inspired by Maharajah Duleep Singh and Thomas Paine. Seema delighted everyone with her snake story. Transporting the audience to a time when Duleep Singh was a boy and would picnic in the cool hills of Mussoorie in Northern India and his first ever hunting experience. Seema’s boa constrictor song proved a firm favourite with younger members of the audience, who joined in and provoked plenty of laughter from the adults. Bringing the audience back to England and starting with a very loud cock-a-doodle-do, Sarah described the early morning scene of an 18th century garden when Tom Paine was a boy in Thetford. Treating the audience to a rendition of Paine’s short poem, ‘Here lies the body of John Crow’, Sarah quickly moved onto a story that Tom Paine would have learnt whist at school, the story of Gideon. Sarah’s skilled storytelling enabled the audience to really feel the angst and triumph of Gideon as they hung on her every word. You could have heard a pin drop! For more information about Essex Cultural Diversity Project and Suffragettes and Women’s Vote: a project inspired by Princess Sophia Duleep Singh visit www.essexcdp.com Rotary@CBC Plan New Projects The new Rotarian satellite group based at the Charles Burrell Centre is steadily going from strength to strength. The group meets every two weeks for a short informal meeting of 30 minutes. Speakers have included Richard Taylor from Tiger Fitness on the power of social media marketing and Tracy & Safina from Aya-Cuisine, who talked about their ‘Memory Walk’ which they will be going to China for on the 19th October, to walk the ‘Great Wall of China’ having raised £5,000 by fundraising for Alzheimer’s. As a group Rotary @CBC will be supporting Thetford & District Rotary Club with their Purple for Polio campaign in the autumn and teaming up with the club again for a charity Race Night. Members have decided to support the Thetford Foodbank, who are preparing to face a crisis in the light of the new benefit system being introduced this autumn. The group have also created a new project, Rucksacks from Rotary. The Rotarians have provided the group with a selection of good waterproof rucksacks which the group aim to fill with emergency items needed by vulnerable people in the town. The bag distribution will be overseen by Nadine, who runs TORRO (Thetford Outreach-Reach Out) an organisation run by volunteers that sign posts help available within our community for those with no fixed address or dealing with loneliness. Nadine also runs Starfish Lounge every Saturday morning at the Library where people can get warm, have a hot drink and breakfast, read a newspaper, charge their phones, use the internet, but most importantly have some company and be signposted if possible towards help available and have a snack to take away. Nadine will be the speaker at the next Rotary@CBC meeting on September 4th at 5pm in Training Room 1 at the Charles Burrell Centre. Anyone interested is welcome to join the group. More information can be found on the Rotary@ CBC Facebook page. New Award For ‘The Crossing’ The Crossing is proud to announce that we have been recognised for the work we do to combat loneliness and social isolation in Norfolk and as a result are now ‘In Good Company’ approved. Thousands of people in Norfolk are lonely. Loneliness can cause poor health and even lead to premature death. It can make people vulnerable to scams and fraud and increase their reliance on public services. But we also know that alleviating loneliness can help people lead independent, happier and healthier lives, for longer. In Good Company is a campaign to help combat loneliness and is being run by over 30 voluntary, statutory organisations and public service providers. So what is loneliness? Emotional loneliness is felt when someone misses the companionship of one particular person; often a spouse, sibling or best friend. Social loneliness is experienced when we lack a wider social network or group of friends. Loneliness or isolation? One can be lonely in a crowded room but one is not then socially isolated. Loneliness is linked to social isolation but it is not the same thing. At the Crossing we run a number of activities that promote inclusion,

Water Talk For Rotarians At their meeting at the end of July, Rotary Club members were pleased to welcome Andy Calvert, the President of Luton Someries Rotary Club, who arrived in Thetford in time for Thetford’s meeting, having walked, over eight days along 114 miles of Icknield Way from Ivinghoe Beacon, near Luton, in what must have been the hottest week since 1976! Not surprisingly, the object of the exercise was to raise funds for charities promoted by Andy’s Rotary Club, and anyone wishing to contribute can do so via: virginmoneygiving.com/TheAndyCalvert The Club’s meeting early in August, traditionally a dinner with a speaker, heard from Ben Hugg, who is a Resolutions Manager from Anglian Water. A very interesting (yes, really!) talk about Anglian Water’s plans for the future, including the installation of smart meters which will enable us, as their customers, and them, to identify leaks and wastage within their customers’ properties. Ben was proud that because of their efficiency we, unlike most of the country, are not suffering hosepipe bans or other restrictions.

Thetford Rotary members heard from Anglia Water this month about how they’ve avoided introducing a hosepipe ban this year despite the very hot weather

The Thomas Paine Legacy Each month, the About Thetford magazine aims to look at an element of Thetford’s history and share this with you. This month we’ve explored the history of Thomas Paine. When you walk down a busy King Street in the town centre of Thetford, it can be quite easy to go past the statue outside King’s House without asking any questions. Erected in 1964, the statue is dedicated to Thomas Paine, one of Thetford’s most significant figures; but who was Thomas Paine, a contemporary of Napoleon and Benjamin Franklin, and what did this Thetford boy do that made him so famous? Born in Thetford in 1737, and educated at the local Thetford Grammar School, Thomas Paine led a diverse life. Having worked for his father, a corset-maker, he sailed to Philadelphia in America in 1774. Paine was a man of many talents, but politics and philosophy were his focus and in 1776 he published his first work, titled ‘Common Sense’. The pamphlet is known for its uncomplicated language, making it accessible to the masses, and quickly rose to fame for promoting independence from Britain to the American population and exposing the faults of the English Constitution. As a result, Paine is recognised as a leading influence in the Declaration of Independence, and as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. However this is not his only significant achievement, and later on in 1791, having become interested in the revolution brewing across the channel in France, Paine wrote his ‘Rights of Man’, a work encouraging the French Revolution and criticising monarchic regimes, like that in England. Naturally, the English government were less than happy, and in 1792 Paine went under trial for treason, though he had already fled to France to avoid arrest and a close shave with execution. In France, Paine was elected to the National Convention, the new government and having escaped another execution for arguing against the execution of King Louis XVI of France, lived there until 1802. He then returned to America and died in 1809. Neither his name nor his image died with him, however. A number of statues and memorials have been erected across the world, in New York, Paris, and of course, Thetford, making his legacy and message, and the name of Thetford, somewhat immortal. These are only some of his achievements, so to learn even more about

Plenty To Do As Summer Draws To A Close Are you looking towards Christmas? Now there’s a scary thought! – September is the time to plant potatoes if you want new spuds for Christmas dinner; you will find packs of tubers on sale now and they can be container grown and given special attention. Also you could plant treated hyacinth and amaryllis bulbs to be ready as gifts (or for your own pleasure) in December and January. It is time to start planting garden bulbs too – the less time they spend in a package in a shop the better. Remember that muntjacs like tulips but will leave daffs alone! After the dry summer potatoes are likely to be expensive in the shops this year so cherish your crop. It is recommended to cut off the foliage about 3 weeks before harvesting. This prevents blight spores infecting the tubers and gives them a chance to start thickening up the skins. Once lifted, leave them on the surface for 24 hours to dry out thoroughly before storing. Use up any which have been damaged as soon as possible and store the sound crop in breathable conditions – paper or hessian sacks or cardboard boxes lined with newspaper. Store somewhere cool, dark and dry. Onions can sit in the sun in shed or greenhouse to dry off – do not try to store them before the necks have withered away. They need light and airy conditions to keep sound so hang up in netting sacks or make a plait if you have the patience. Autumn onions sets can be set out at the end of the month for an early crop next year; birds will probably pull a few out before they establish roots so they need frequent inspection and replanting. This is also the best time to plant garlic cloves rather than in the Spring. They go in an inch or two deep so mark the area clearly as it can take some time for them to show any growth. There is nothing worse than digging up something you have planted and spoiling its chances of growing well. Both these vegetables are thought to have health benefits – for coughs and colds, high blood pressure, high cholesterol etc. - and of course garlic is very good at keeping witches at bay – or is it vampires! If you tend to weep when preparing particularly pungent onions, try chilling the bulb in the fridge for half an hour before cutting into it. This reduces the volatile sulphur compounds.

Tomatoes and Cucumbers are still being harvested in many gardens as the summer draws to a close

set better if there is moisture around in the evening so spraying the foliage then could be a good idea – though surely we will be getting more rain by now. What these plants need most of all is a deep humus-rich soil so make sure all vegetable waste goes onto the compost heap to be returned to the land and work its magic. As gardens and allotments are tidied at this time of year there should be plenty of material to use. Break or chop stems as you add them to quicken the process of decomposition and turn the heap if you have room as this mixes the content and also speeds the process up. Alternatively you could bag up the compost at the bottom of your container for use in the Spring. The club meeting this month is the AGM followed by a Harvest Supper. This is at the United Reformed Church on Thursday 27th September. The AGM starts at 6.30pm so that the supper can begin about 7.30pm. Come along and hear what is planned for next year and share your grumbles! Soft drinks supplied or BYO. Don’t forget to visit the About Thetford website where you can view additional information and all past copies of the magazine. www.aboutthetfordmagazine.co.uk

Runner and French beans will go on cropping through this month if they are regularly watered and fed. New Woodcraft Folk Pioneer Group In Thetford For 9 - 12 Year Olds The first question most people ask is ‘What on earth is Woodcraft Folk?!’ We don’t craft wood (well sometimes we whittle a stick for toasting a marshmallow!) but Woodcraft Folk is actually about much more – society, co-operation, equality, the environment; about making new friends and developing confidence. Woodcraft Folk has been going since 1925, originally in London and big cities. When I had a stall at Thetford’s River Day recently it was great to meet a couple of ‘older’ Thetford residents who told me they’d been members of Woodcraft Folk as children in London and they’d absolutely loved it!

We have funding to start new groups in East Anglia and it’s my job to find volunteers and children and a venue in Thetford! (I recently set up a group in Diss). I will support the group for several months until it’s up and running. It’s been great to meet Thetford families at taster sessions and stalls over the summer. I’d love to hear from anyone keen to get involved. Volunteers will be supported and training is available. And I’d love to hear more from the older generation who used to be in Woodcraft Folk, perhaps in London. Maybe I could write down your memories to inspire the new generation! Hide And Seek You might have noticed that Blackbirds, Song Thrushes and Robins have disappeared from your garden, and that Blue and Great Tits have become a little more obvious. If you are out and about you might have also noticed that there are more Jays about; even if you aren’t seeing them, their raucous and grating call is difficult to miss – in Welsh their name is ‘Sgrech y Coed’, which in direct translation means ‘the scream of the woods’. So, what might be happening? Why have some birds become easier to see, whilst others have gone into hiding? The answer to this lies in their breeding strategy. Birds such as the Jay are single brooded, in that they only lay one clutch of eggs and raise one family per year, whilst those such as the Blackbird and Robin are multi-brooded and in a good year can raise two or even three broods of youngsters. Here is the crux of the matter. Blue, Great and Marsh Tits are all coming into gardens in search of food, along with Nuthatches too. For all of these birds the breeding season came to a close over a month ago; since then they will have gone into hiding to undergo a post-breeding moult, replacing those feathers that got bashed and worn whilst looking after their progeny. With moult now complete they need to get themselves into tip-top condition in readiness for the colder months ahead, hence the visits to our bird feeders. Jays are also single-brooded and are doing exactly the same as the tits and Nuthatches, only out in our wooded fringes and along tree-lined rivers. For the multi-brooded birds the breeding season is only just coming to a close, and it is now that they will undertake their moult into their winter finery. During the post-breeding moult the adult birds will replace all of

A Jay by Edmund Fellowes / BTO

their flight and tail feathers. They don’t do this all at once as this would render them flightless; instead they replace each of the wing and tail feathers one at a time. This leaves them with a small gap in the wing but they do retain the power of flight, albeit a little compromised. This is why birds undertaking their moult hide away as it does make them more vulnerable. Requesting Grow Your Own Enthusiasts In Breckland And West Norfolk An exciting project led by organic growing charity, Garden Organic, has been launched in Breckland and West Norfolk. Growing Communities encourages local communities of all ages and backgrounds to grow their own fruit and vegetables at home, on allotments or community gardens, on the balcony or even in their work place. The project is funded by Reaching Communities (Big Lottery), and is working in partnership with Family Action in Swaffham. The project will be working in two strands, on the ESCAPE allotment based in Swaffham, and through outreach work in communities. Four allotment and outreach work volunteers will encourage and support participants through a range of organic gardening and horticultural activities through the skills they have learnt in their training. This community gardening project brings together ‘volunteers’ and ‘participants’ from the local community to undertake therapeutic gardening activities, learn new organic horticultural and life skills, and encourage improved physical and mental health, promoting healthy eating and social interaction.

The project is looking to recruit volunteer Master Gardeners within the area to engage in activities in communal gardens, including at residential homes, and other community spaces including schools, libraries etc. Outreach volunteers will also attend events (promoting the project), and offer talks and demonstrations. So, if you live in Breckland or West Norfolk and are interested in becoming a Master Gardener contact the Garden Organic Growing Communities Co-ordinator Becky Reavill on 07454 509692, or email; breavill@gardenorganic.org.uk The next training session is scheduled for the week-end of 29/30th September in Thetford.

Championing Apprentice Training Engineering in Britain has suffered decline over many decades and for many reasons. But thanks to people like Richard Bridgman, the speaker at Thetford Probus Club’s August meeting, there is still a bright future for this vital area of industry. Plain speaking, a solid background in engineering, stemming from training as an apprentice, along with an entrepreneurial flair has served Mr Bridgman well in his career that has taken him from a start-up workshop in a lock up garage to state-of-the-art factories in Thetford manufacturing for clients around the world.

For example, he pointed out, the company’s winches which are used behind the scenes in top stage shows around the world including many in Las Vegas. He emphasized that success is the result of having a great team of talented people. Time and again he underlined the importance of apprenticeship training something he has always championed and which brought recognition in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours when he was awarded an OBE.

Moving from Surrey to Brandon some 42 July. There was also a presentation of the Probus badge years ago, Mr Bridgman said that initially he worked in to Peter Fenton who recently became a member of partnership, but soon set up on his own. New Opportunities At Thetford United Reformed Church

Pulse Youth Cafe At Church Of Nazarene

In 1981 and 1998, major changes were made to the inside of Thetford United Reformed Church on Earls Street to remove pews etc and convert the old balcony to a very useful community room. Since then, members of community groups have become older and some have been unable to climb the stairs to reach the room. June this year, saw the completion of a project to install a platform lift from the foyer to the upper room and a complete refurbishment of the room and its facilities for user groups and this brings new opportunities to local community groups. Thetford Town Council has supported this project with a grant of £2000.

Are you aged between 11-16? Are you free on a Tuesday from 3.45pm-5.15pm? Looking for something to do? Then Pulse Youth Cafe is just for you! We meet every Tuesday in the Church of the Nazarene, Thetford. There is a full-sized pool table, games consoles, table tennis, craft activities, football table, board games and much more! We offer a free milkshake and slice of toast and the café is open to buy more snacks and drinks. All welcome. We are re-launching in the newly re-furbished hall on 18th September with a pizza party. Come along and meet the team. For more info email Amy Cossey; amy@integrateyfc.org.uk

This month’s Thetford Face is Dave Ward. Dave is well known around the town for his love of Thomas Paine and is the Secretary of the UK Thomas Paine Society. Dave along with his wife Jean can normally be found supporting any number of local events and activities and is a passionate supporter of all things Thetford. Have you always lived in Thetford? I moved here in 1977 with Thermos as part of the London Overspill, with the promise of a council house on Abbey Farm. After a week at Themos, I got a job at Jeyes and stayed there for 21 years. What was life like on the Abbey Estate? It had lovely green spaces and a great community feel. Unfortunately in the 1980s it became clear there was a big problem with some of the houses and how they were built. Over a 2 year period I led a campaign and pressure group along with Colin Jones called Shaft – ‘Safe Homes for Abbey Farm Tenants’ to ensure every

building, our homes were repaired properly. We had a lot of press coverage and I still have letters from the then MP John MacGregor and Breckland District Council. How did running a campaign change your life? During this time I got to know many of the local Councillors well, especially Thelma and Albert Paines. In 1987 Thelma nominated me to become a local magistrate in Thetford. I was the youngest magistrate in the UK at the time and spent 7 years in the role. Jeyes was one of the biggest firms to move to Thetford as part of the overspill project, what was it like working there? When I started I worked on the production line and ended up becoming a Manager. It’s sad to see the name has disappeared from the town. My years in Jeyes settled me into life in Thetford. I was the Senior Shop Steward for 5 years and I loved it. I loved looking after people and I’ve always been a bit of a trouble maker so standing up for what I thought was right came easily. What sparked your interest in Thomas Paine? I suddenly realised who he was about 20 years ago, and he has become my absolute hero. He stands for everything I wish I could, aside from religion. Stuart Wright introduced me to the story of Thomas Paine; he was involved in the Thomas Paine Society which I then joined. Eventually I became the Secretary of the society and now I’m involved in promoting the work of Thomas Paine through the society. I’ve spent time researching Thomas Paine and searching for objects. My favourite work by Thomas Paine is Age of Reason. I also helped to organise the finance when a 1st edition French language copy of Rights of Man became available. With help from the Friends of Ancient House, the Society and other partners we purchased the book which is now on display at Ancient House Museum.

Dave with one of the local newspapers that covered the SHAFT campaign. He is top right in the photos.

How could we celebrate our links to Thetford’s most famous son? I’d like to see a Thomas Paine museum in Thetford, if you go to Lewes they even have Paine pound notes, we should have them here. The Thomas Paine Society are organising a visit from Ian

Ruskin who will be performing his one man show live in the town and hopefully working with the senior schools in March 2019. You are well known in town for championing Thomas Paine, is he your only interest? As a young teenager I was a very keen supporter of the free radio campaign. I belonged to the Free Radio Association and this led to a lifelong interest in pirate radio ships. In 2010 I became aware that there was a struggle to keep the last pirate ship, the Ross Revenge, home to Radio Caroline going. I got in touch and volunteered to help as part of a group of ex DJs and enthusiasts who worked together to save the ship. One of the ways I raised money for the campaign was by selling off pieces of the original transmitted masts to enthusiasts. These were no longer being used by the late 1980/90s but were in big demand as mementos. It’s now a museum and occasionally broadcasts. The ship has a great history; it was involved in the Cod Wars in the 1970s and also holds a cod catch world record. These days I often do talks on Radio Caroline and the history of pirate radio.

Dave in the Radio Caroline heritage studio, it was originally used as a transmission studio in the 1980s.

What’s the best thing about living in Thetford? I’m proud to live here, I love Thetford. I love the history from Boudicca to Thomas Paine, Duleep Singh and Dads Army. I was born and bred an Essex boy, I lived up North and in the West but Thetford is the only place where there is so much international history, yet hardly anyone knows about it! I brought 3 kids up in Thetford and not one has been in trouble or unemployed. For more information on the Ross Revenge visit www.radiocaroline.co.uk, to organise a visit call 07535493501 For information about the Thomas Paine Society visit www.thomaspaineuk.com

Norfolk Recycling Centres All Set For Hazardous Waste Days For the fifteenth year running, Norfolk's residents can get rid of unwanted household chemicals, safely and securely, at a series of household hazardous waste events taking place at seven of Norfolk County Council's recycling centres during September and October. Wood preservatives, insecticides, weed killers, paint, thinners, varnishes and special cleaning products are among the wide range of household chemicals that will be accepted – for free – at the weekend-long events. These are products that are too dangerous to be tipped down drains and can’t be put in our regular waste bins because they can damage the environment and they need to be dealt with using specialist disposal processes. Cllr Martin Wilby, Chairman of Norfolk County Council's Environment Development and Transport committee said: “Once again we are putting on extra dates at the recycling centres that were most popular in previous years as we’re keen to help people who are wishing to dispose of their household chemicals safely and responsibly. Don’t forget that if you only want to dispose of left-over paint you can save yourself a journey as there’s no need to bring it along to one of our hazardous waste days. Just dry the paint out and put it in your household rubbish bin at any time of the year. To help speed along the drying out process a top tip is to add sawdust or cat litter to the paint pot.”

There will be a designated area at the recycling centre for residents to take their hazardous waste which will be identified by two waste specialists and a chemist and then sorted for correct transportation and disposal. To find out more about the events including what can and can’t be taken along, visit the website: www.norfolk.gov.uk/hazardouswaste

The Lady Lord Mayors of Norwich, 1923 - 2017 by Phyllida Scrivens This was Phyllida’s second talk to the Thetford Society having regaled us exactly one year previously about Joe Sterling the young German Jew who fled the Nazi regime. During her research of Joe’s book, she had to interview a particularly feisty ex lady-Lord Mayor, Joyce Morgan who had worked with Joe. Unbeknown to Phyllida at the time, this was to be the beginning of her next book adventure. In this the 100th year since women struggled to get the vote, these women have been such a positive contribution to society. There have been 17 Women and 100 Men who have been Lord Mayors of Norwich, 9 of the ladies were still alive when she was researching her book. Whilst 6 of the 17 came from Norwich there were others who came from as far afield as Smethwick, the Wirral, Glasgow and even Czechoslovakia. During their year in office their duties are not only attending formal functions and events dressed in their robes, they also aim to raise money and support for many charities. Ethel Coleman served from 1923-4 and was not only the first Lady Lord Mayor of Norwich but the first in Great Britain. As may be guessed from her name she was part of the Coleman Mustard family and was well connected from the very beginning. However, Ruth Hardy (1950-51) on the other hand had a much humbler background as her father was a Rabbit Warrener. A truly fascinating evening that conjured up great images of strong women but also a wonderful insight into our social history.

Free Hearing Checks In Thetford Ten million people in the UK - one in six of us - have some degree of hearing loss. It's surprisingly tricky to spot gradual hearing loss as our brains are very good at compensating, so we're not even aware of how much we've lost until things are quite far advanced. The good news is that there are things you can do about it. The bad news is that there are potentially serious consequences if you choose to ignore hearing loss, including an increased risk of dementia. Local hearing care specialists The Hearing Care Centre, offers award winning hearing care services from 25 centres across East Anglia. This year they are celebrating their 20th year in business

Too busy?

Audiologist Karen Finch and her team will be holding a free ‘Hearing Care Centre Open Day’ at their local hearing clinic at Thetford Healthy Living Centre, between 9am and 5pm on Tuesday 25th September. During the event they will be providing free hearing assessments (usually £20), along with complimentary professional advice about your hearing test results and discussing possible solutions that could help improve your hearing. All services are available by appointment only. To book your appointment call 01473 230330 or visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk for more info.

At Thetford Library In September Would you like a Home Library Service? Or, do know someone that would benefit? The Home Library Service is aimed at older people who enjoy reading or listening to a recording but can't get out of the house. Our home library services offer a vital link to the local library. Royal Voluntary Service Books on Wheels volunteers bring a selection of books, large print, DVDs, CDs and audio tapes to older people in their home on a regular basis. The volunteer is also a friendly face and a useful check on the safety and well-being of the older person. Older people who sign up to the service are asked to complete a questionnaire to indicate their tastes and preferences. In many instances, however, our volunteers will get to know those they are helping to such an extent that they will begin to make their own recommendations and bring a selection of books they believe will be of interest. If you would like to use the Home Library Service contact Royal Voluntary Service on: 01603 397998 or email; norfolkhls@royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk For information on our opening hours and all our regular activities for children and adults from Baby Bounce and Rhyme to the Local History Group, Just a Cuppa to our code club call us on 01842 752048 or online at; thetford.lib@norfolk.gov.uk

Thetford U3A Update Our group leader in the spotlight this month is Chris Hayes. He is the group leader for a number of groups including Computing, Science & Technology and the Electronics Group. He is also the Group Leader of the Badminton group. If anyone is interested in joining any of these groups they will be warmly greeted. Please leave a message on our web page or come along to our next meeting on September 27th, at the Carnegie Room at 2.00pm. The October meeting will be held on the 25th at the same time and venue. We’ll be joined by Fraser Harrison who will be speaking about the Duleep Singh statue which promises to be very interesting. The Thetford U3A Electronics, Computing and Science & Technology groups have members from many professions and are all keen to learn and share their knowledge with others. Our current project is building a 3D printer. This is interesting in itself, and the finished article should be well worth the effort, but we are also enjoying the trip. Firstly, we pass a 2-dimensional machine which can be used to draw on paper or engrave lettering on things, or even a laser cutter which

one member has bought which can cut computer generated shapes in wood or plastic. We would welcome more members from those new to this field to seasoned engineers. All will be made welcome, so if you think you would enjoy computer-aided design, making metalwork, using stepper motors, programming Arduino, learning G code or any other engineering areas, then please come and join us. We meet at 2pm every Tuesday. For more info on the Electronics Group, contact Chris Hayes on 01842 762356

Breastfeeding Event Hailed A Success

World Textile Day

The first week of August was World Breastfeeding Week which aims to highlight the huge benefits that breastfeeding can bring to both the health of baby and mum. Sadly, Norfolk has one of the lowest percentages of breast feeding mothers at 8 weeks post birth. Thetford falls even lower then the Norfolk average.

World Textile Day returns to Mundford Village Hall on Saturday September 8th for its 6th year! With its mix of small specialist traders' stands, an exhibition, talks and home made cakes this show has gone from strength to strength with many fans coming back every year for the whole day. Each year World Textile Day has a new theme and the 2018 theme is "Working Together". At 11am special guest speakers Sue and David Richardson who lead textile tours to the Indonesian Islands, will be showing some of their wonderful collection of ikat weavings. At 2pm renowned textile collector and author John Gillow will be giving a short talk followed by three traders showing "one of their favourite textiles". World Textile Day East starts at 10am and entrance is free. The talks cost just £3 each and tickets are available on the day.

Three local mums came together to hold an event in August. The afternoon was greatly supported with a wonderful turn out and lovely atmosphere. The ladies would like to especially thank Castle Midwifes who came along to talk to everyone offering advice and support. All the local businesses that displayed a knitted boob and poster advertising the event including; CBC, West Brothers, Centre Stage, Tiger Fitness, The core Studio. Toy Library, CBC Cafe, Serenity, Chicc Boutique, Tall Orders, Costa, Thetford Funeral Services. It’s not stopping here, West Suffolk Hospital are in the process of advertising for a breast feeding support worker, there is a 24/7 advice line you can access and we want a regular meet up group back in our town. Michelle, Jade and Jasmine hope to see you in the near future. Also, remember that breast feeding mums can sign up to the Thetford Breastfeeding Support Page on Facebook.

John Oliver Sept/Oct 2018 Ads.qxp_Layout 1 18/07/20

Moving With The Times Next Month on the 1st October our family business will be 28 years young! Which means I have actually had the salon longer than I haven’t! I started out as Beauty Therapist in the mid 80’s and we offered basic treatments such as Manicures, Pedicures, Facials, Electrolysis, Waxing and Massage. Back then most people were not familiar with what a Beauty Therapist was, so I continually had to explain what I did. With a desire for knowledge we were regularly attending post graduate training courses in London at the International Dermal Institute. I decided to learn advanced electrolysis, which is for the removal of skin tags, milia and thread veins and ended up travelling all the way to Chester to attend the Lillian Maund School of Beauty - there were no colleges near offering this course. Our salon treatments have changed dramatically over the last 28 years. With advances in technology, the skin care treatments have become much more sophisticated, facial exfoliation is much stronger. Nail treatments have changed from traditional nail polish to high shines and Gel finishes. We use Intense pulse light and Laser technology to remove unwanted hair permanently, so electrolysis is not the only option. We can remove broken capillaries with IPL too, so electrolysis is not always needed there either. Brown pigmentation marks can be eradicated. In the old days our appointments used to be written down with pencil in a paper book, now we have computerised system and not one but two, just to keep things flowing. We never had a website in the early days, relying on newspaper adverts, yellow pages and personal recommendation. We send text reminders to all our clients to help remind them of appointments. 10 years ago I trained in the art of permanent makeup. I love creating brows for clients using fine hair strokes and also doing eyeliner and lip liner. We have had a great team of therapists work for us over the last 28 years. It’s gone so fast and I never imagined when we started how much things would change, but the basics of making your clients feel good about themselves and helping them achieve their goals is very rewarding indeed. Thyroid Advice For Cats You have probably heard of the thyroid gland, but may not know that problems with the thyroid gland are common in older cats. The thyroid is made up of two glands located on either side of the windpipe, at the base of your cat's neck. These glands produce thyroxine, a hormone which helps to regulate the metabolic rate. Sometimes the thyroid becomes overactive and produces excessive amounts of thyroxine and this is known as hyperthyroidism and it speeds up metabolism. It can be diagnosed by a blood test. The signs of hyperthyroidism are increased appetite and / or thirst, weight loss, hyperactivity and restlessness, vomiting and diarrhoea, poor coat condition, enlargement of the thyroid gland and a fast heart rate. If left untreated, hyperthyroidism will begin to affect other major organs, such as the heart or the liver and will eventually be fatal.

Once treated they will return to normal fairly quickly in most cases. If the disease has been detected and treated early on, the cat often lives several more years. The cat in the photograph above is Lucy, who belongs to one of our volunteers. Lucy has the opposite condition – she has hypothyroidism, which means her thyroid does not produce any thyroxine at all. It is a very rare condition in cats. Lucy therefore has to have thyroxine tablets every day of her life, to keep her alive and healthy. However, she has learnt that if she gobbles up her tablets by herself, she then gets 2 Dreamies!!

The treatment options include medication, surgery or radiation and in some cases feeding a veterinary diet. Drugs are available that block the production of thyroxine and are usually in tablet form and need to be For help or advice, or if you need assistance with the given daily for life. Blood samples need to be checked cost of neutering, please call us on 01842 810018. periodically to ensure that thyroid levels are within the Rita Thompson, Breckland Cats Protection normal range and, if not the dosage will need to be adjusted. Surgery involves removing one or both glands of the thyroid under general anaesthesia. Radiation is an irreversible treatment whereby cats are injected with radioactive iodine which destroys the abnormal thyroid tissue, while leaving the normal cells unaffected. A veterinary diet has recently become available which contains low levels of iodine and may help to normalise thyroid levels. But it must be fed as the only source of food with no access to other food, including prey. Each cat and owner is different, so it is important to discuss the different treatments options12/09/2013 with your vet 08:13 to decide MCP Editorial:TEMPLATE Page 1 what is best for your particular cat.

Norfolk Branches Team Up For Charity Football Match The England football team’s heroic efforts at the 2018 World Cup may be becoming a distant memory for most, but for the Dereham and Thetford branches of The Nottingham they live on as the catalyst for a great charity idea. Whilst Harry Kane was hitting the net and Jordan Pickford was keeping the ball out at the other end, colleagues Kayleigh Capps, Michelle Watson and Megan Colley began working on plans for their very own match of the day. The result?... a charity football match planned for Sunday 9th September that is looking set to score plenty of cash for charity SportsAid, which The Nottingham has been supporting since 2013. All money raised from the game will go directly towards aiding the sporting ambitions of the two local SportsAid athletes that the building society’s Dereham, Thetford and Fakenham branches are backing. They are England girls youth international footballer Blue Wilson, 16, from Sheringham and wheelchair athletics star Will Smith, 22, who hails from close to Dereham and who has competed at a Commonwealth Games and a World Junior Championships. Dereham branch Customer Services Consultant Kayleigh Capps explained: “With football fever having hit not just Norfolk but on a world stage this year Megan and I thought it apt to arrange a football match when we were discussing how to raise money for SportsAid. “Thanks to the support of many organisations and people in Dereham and Thetford we have been able to set up a match between two teams who love the beautiful game and there will also be lots of things going on besides the game too to make it a really fun day for all.”

Two of the match organisers, Megan Colley and Kayleigh Capps.

The match takes place on 9th September at Rocklands All Saints’ ground on Green Lane, Attleborough, NR17 1UA with a 1pm kick-off. Anyone is welcome to attend and admission is free. There will be food and drink available, including the clubhouse bar and a cake stall, as well as music and a raffle with some fantastic prizes donated by local businesses.

Solicitors

What are conveyancing searches? If these are not uncovered before you take When you instruct a solicitor to carry out the purchase of a property, they will need to conduct various searches before your purchase can go through. Conveyancing searches are necessary so that you can find out if there are any issues you need to be aware of before you take ownership of your new home. They are also a requirement of most lenders, who will want to make sure there is enough equity in the property they are lending on.

What types of searches are there?

There are several different types of searches your solicitor will conduct when you buy a property and some of the standard ones are listed below;

Local authority searches

Local authority searches are arguably the most important type of search your solicitor will arrange, as they will look at information held by the local authority. The type of information held can include past and present planning permission, confirmation of whether the road and paths leading to the property are adopted and information on whether the property is listed.

Environmental searches

An environmental search is important as it will establish whether the property you are buying is built on or near contaminated land or water, or an old landfill site. The reason this type of search is required is because many properties are built on land which was previously used for industrial purposes, and toxic substances could remain in the ground.

ownership of the property you could find yourself with a home that is impossible to sell later, or even worse is a health hazard. Water authority searches A water authority search will establish where your water comes from and whether there are any public drains on the property. This is vital, if there is one it could affect any building work you want to do in the future, such as an extension.

Location specific searches

Depending on the area where you are buying a property, your solicitor might suggest arranging some additional searches. For example, if you are buying in an area formerly used for mining, you may want to arrange for a mining search to be carried out, to establish whether the home you want to buy has been built on unstable ground and so is at risk of subsidence. Chancel repair search A chancel repair search is necessary to establish whether you will be liable for the cost of repairs to a parish church. During the middle ages, property owners rather than monasteries became responsible for repairing church chancels. A chancel repair search only costs a few pounds and you may opt to take out Chancel repair insurance instead, which typically costs around ÂŁ20. As a rough guide, searches typically take around two to three weeks to complete, but remember that the results are vital for a solicitor to fully advise you on a property.

Thriving Thetford Business Community The success of the West Suffolk College and Thetford Business Forum work experience project last year, created a “win win” situation for education and industry. Showing what a difference the two sectors can make working together on developing young people’s skills and preparing them for the work place. One output from the project helped create a strategy to take the Thetford Business Forum forward. Identifying several key industry strengths in town and the surrounding areas. These include Agriculture, Equine and Conservation, Tourism, Retail and Hospitality, Pharmaceuticals, Engineering and Manufacturing, Professional Services, Logistics and Warehousing and the Creative Industries. The project will be repeated in 2018/19, giving students valuable support, showcasing career opportunities. Sector Profiling: The Thetford Manufacturing Club has been re-established and is being managed by several local businesses and supported by Breckland Council. It meets regularly at different business venues and attracts a healthy sized group of business people keen to work together to promote the sector. You cannot fail to have missed the recently established events activity at Thetford Riverside “on the green” a Breckland initiative being delivered by the private sector and supporting retail and hospitality, boosting the town’s visitor economy. Friday 7th September: Supporting Tourism - The Visitor Economy. A Breckland Business Forum event bringing together industry leaders and the public sector to discuss collaborative methods of working together to grow the visitor economy in Breckland. A must for business people to attend, whether working directly or indirectly in the sector. Tourism, retail and the food industry are closely linked and touches everyone whether in work or in play.

Struggling With Motivation We’ve all been there, some of us more than others but when it comes to our training, we can push it back and let other things take over, especially if they’re easier and require less effort! Here’s a few tips on how to remain focused and get that motivation back ready for your exercise! 1) Put The Phone Down!! – Talking yourself out of a perfectly good fitness session and replacing it with injecting yourself full of social media should be a big no-no! It’s easier to sit there and scroll through other peoples lives than to workout. If this is you, give yourself a time limit and get back to your focus. 2) Plan Your Sessions – If you’re not attending a ready-made class which is going to kick you in to an Aerobic or Anaerobic state and you’re just aimlessly going to stroll in to the gym without a plan, of course your motivation is going to slip. Plan what exercises you’re going to do, with the required sets and how long for. Any good gyms will have staff to help you write these plans. 3) Think About Yourself – Leave work at work. As soon as you set foot in your training facility, that’s your time. Any stresses you’ve gained through the day from work, family, or any other worries, need to be left at the door. Concentrate on what you came to do, use the negative energy to fuel your workouts and leave calmer with a positive mindset.

5) Join Tiger Fitness – If you’re struggling with all the tips above then you may benefit from fitness classes. You don’t need to plan your workouts, you can’t access your phone, the timeframe is chosen for you. You need to enter with a can-do attitude and more often than not it’s the people in the class that’ll help you forget about your outside worries and encourage you in your workout. If you think you could benefit from help from myself or one of my team, get in touch with us today. #BecomeaBetterYou Enjoy your training and look after your body! - Rich Contact Richard via email: richard@tigerfitnessclub.co.uk

4) Give yourself a time frame – Once your session is planned, you’ve put the phone down and you’re thinking about yourself, it’s time to work. Stringing out a workout is unmotivating. Tell yourself you’ve got an hour and roughly plan how long you’ll take in each exercise, remain focused and work hard.

Shirley regularly runs and volunteers with her grandson Owen, who had his fourth birthday in August. Owen has been a regular at parkrun from 5 months old. His grandmother was regular seen running with Owen in his buggy. As Owen found his own legs he is often seen walking and running alongside Shirley. Until recently he would complete part of the course in buggy and part on his own two feet. Now aged 4 he can complete as much as parkrun as possible. On the 11th August he completed his first parkrun without his buggy in a time of 59 minutes and 37 seconds. Owen has volunteered 26 times with his grandmother and loves to marshal and gives and receives loads of high 5's from all of the parkrunners. Owen's favourite marshal spot is Jelly baby corner where he gets to hand out jelly babies.
