A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Whenever I hear true fans of RENT talk about why they love this show, there is always a reverence for the community that was created by the characters in Alphabet City in the mid-90s. RENT debuted in 1994 highlighting the chaos of the decade-long global AIDS crisis, the height of the crack epidemic, and rampant homelessness amid corporate greed and urban gentrification. A bold move for a Broadway show, following years of government, medical and social ambivalence to “the gay cancer,” trickle-down economics, and a war on drug users rather than drug makers. In 1992 the CDC reported that AIDS was the number one killer of men aged 25-44 and by 1994, the year RENT debuted on Broadway, it was the leading cause of death for all Americans in that age group. Amid government denial, social scorn, religious disapproval, and medical procrastination; the multiple crises of the 90’s seemed to target the vibrant, artistic, creative, fun-loving sections of society who already felt disenchanted with the establishment. Just like in La Boheme and the artist colonies of Paris in the 1890’s, our struggling artists paint a world where society is quick to make anything operating outside of the strict norms and conventions of sitcom styled suburban America. So, I understand why people hold the show in a special place in their hearts, RENT resonates with anyone looking for a place that celebrates finding your tribe and “being an ‘us’” as the lyric goes in “La Vie Boheme.” It’s important to remember those times – but also to look at our current world through that lens. What have we learned since then? How have things changed and how have they stayed the same? I’m grateful for the Count Basie Center and Phoenix Productions who are working on being the change. Dedicated to creating a place that celebrates everyone, lifts all voices and endeavors to authentically provide a space for everyone to be seen, feel welcome, and grow their passion for creating... for their community. At the end of the day all we can do is measure our lives in love.
Enjoy the show.
