COUNTRY ARTS SA GUIDE

2016 WELCOME TO A YEAR OF GREAT ART Artwork detail by Pungkai. Nyapari Ngura Wiru, 2012, synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 180 x 279 cm

ART WEAVES ITS WAY THROUGH ANY COMMUNITY, SMALL OR LARGE, BINDING IT TOGETHER AND KEEPING IT STRONG. Art is important in shaping the identity and culture of a region and letting it thrive. At Country Arts SA we want to bring the arts to life here in the Limestone Coast, not just for those who live in Mount Gambier, but also those further away. That’s why we’ve put together this handy resource containing all the information you need about what’s going on in your region throughout the year, from theatre performances, visual arts, local work and cinema screenings to funding opportunities and workshops for artists. We trust there’ll be something to engage and inspire every member of the family in this guide, and hope you will join us in celebrating the arts in your community. 2016 also marks the 19th year SA Power Networks has supported us in bringing the best in Australian and international performing arts to audiences across South Australia. Thanks to SA Power Networks, our Principle Corporate Partner, we’re in for a great year. Steve Saffell CEO, Country Arts SA

Jack Snelling MP Minister for the Arts –

Rob Stobbe CEO, SA Power Networks –

When challenged by cultural and economic boundaries, particularly those compounded by distance, the most interesting success stories are often in the arts.

SA Power Networks is proud to partner with Country Arts SA in its mission to bring the best of the arts to people right around South Australia.

The arts help us make sense of the world around us by broadening our understanding of it. It not only connect us to our past experiences, but also to worlds so far removed from our own we may not have imagined them possible.

In 2016 we are partnering for the 19th successive year with Country Arts SA. Over this time, people in every corner of the State have been entertained and inspired by the productions Country Arts SA has brought to their doorstep.

Wherever you live in South Australia, we want you to have access to the worlds and experiences the arts provide.

As SA Power Networks continues our task of safely distributing power to about 850,000 customers across South Australia, we’re pleased to also help deliver quality arts events right around the state too.

Whether you attend a production or workshop, receive support or funding, take in a visual arts exhibition or a cinema screening, you’ll be experiencing some of what Country Arts SA has on offer for your region. The organisation is committed to delivering high quality arts to regional and rural parts of the state so you don’t have to travel so far. While Country Arts SA connects you to other worlds, it can also help connect you to your neighbours just down the street and to likeminded people all over your region, through a medium that knocks down the divides and brings communities closer together. So join your community and your local Country Arts SA staff for a year of great art in 2016!

Congratulations to Country Arts SA on another terrific program – here’s to a great year of art in 2016!

BASED ON THE MUCH-LOVED PICTURE BOOK CHARACTER CREATED BY TED PRIOR Following sold out seasons across the world (including Broadway in New York), our amiable little megastar returns home for a strictly limited season. Grug began his life as the top of a Burrawang tree that fell to the ground. Resembling a small, striped haystack with feet and a nose, Grug is fascinated by the world around him and solves everyday problems creatively and without fuss. When dancing instructions are too difficult to understand, he invents his own dance and calls it “The Grug”. When snails eat his cabbages, Grug plants more cabbages so there will be enough for both him and the snails. Ted Prior’s hugely popular character (with over 110,000 Facebook fans!) is brought to life in this magical stage production for our very young theatre lovers.

Meet Lee and Maz. Best mates, invulnerable. Both young and beautiful, tanned and strong. It’s summer, their last year of school and they are ready to have the time of their lives. One fateful night they are driving on the highway, drunk and high. Life shatters and only one is left to pick up the pieces. That’s where Lola comes in. She looks exactly like Maz, which makes sense; she’s his sister. His twin sister. In the face of tragedy she’s looking for answers. A theatrical thrillseeker ride, Gorgon looks at the tricky dividing line between friendship and love, anger and grief. With a perceptive and sympathetic ear, it charts one of the most difficult moments of transition in life, from late adolescence to adulthood. You can’t say ‘no’ to the people you love - or the mob. In Francis Ford Coppola’s 1975 ground-breaking film The Godfather, the head of a prize horse is savagely cut off and placed in the bed of a hotshot Hollywood film director for the refusal of a favour... ever thought about the two guys that had to put it there? From award-winning playwright Damon Lockwood comes a whip-cracking tale of two men (The Fonzie Brothers) given this viciously gruesome task to ensure their future with the mob. The play has had sold-out seasons in Perth (nominated for the Western Australian Equity Guild Award for Best Play), Melbourne, New York and Italy, winning the 2012 Rome International Fringe Festival along the way. It is dark and funny and very much a tribute to the astounding Godfather Trilogy… but don’t worry if you’ve never seen any of the films (what have you been doing?!) – the play stands by itself.

Classic and statuesque, pianos have often lived many lives before ending up with their owner. A piano has the ability to transport us through time and space, taking us right around the world to lives they’ve had before us. Created with Circa’s distinctive physical style, Reclaimed Pianos features three of Circa’s acrobats uniquely accompanied by music played live by a professional pianist on a local, restored piano. Country Arts SA and Circa will work with local communities to find pianos and uncover the stories behind each of them. Circa’s Reclaimed Pianos bring together the magic of a beautifully played piano, the classical canon and world-class acrobats giving physical life to the music.

GET INVOLVED Circa’s Reclaimed Pianos performance will be inspired by the rich content and connections community have to music and their pianos. In April, Circa will visit Ceduna to hear local stories and develop creative ways to share them. If you have a special story to share please contact tammy.hall@countryarts.org.au In September, Circa will tour Reclaimed Pianos to Ceduna, Cummins, Lameroo and Bordertown. If you are from Cummins, Lameroo or Bordertown you will also have an opportunity to contribute to the unearthing and sharing of your local piano stories. The Orchestra-In-Residence of the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre returns for its fourth season in 2016. Under the baton of its conductor Angus Christie, this seventy piece orchestra will present an exciting program of works ranging from classical repertoire to popular film and music theatre pieces with a new composition by a regional Australian composer. This year the Limestone Coast Symphony Orchestra undertakes its most ambitious project to date, a performance of the Grieg Piano Concerto with internationally acclaimed soloist Kenji Fujimura. The musicians will relish the musical challenge of performing one of the great works of the late Romantic period, while offering our audience a chance to hear this gem played by an acknowledged keyboard master on the theatre’s concert grand piano. Other guest soloists include accomplished concert violinist Virginia Weekes and Bronson Pfeiler, a rising young vocal talent. A special feature of the season will be the introduction of a newly formed choir made up of enthusiastic singers from across the region. The Limestone Coast Symphonic Chorus, which will gather together each year to perform with the orchestra, is under the leadership of Jodi Swiggs, Director of Phoenix Studios.

After debuting at the Adelaide Fringe in 2015 with an encore performance later in the year, Helpless – The Songs of Neil Young returns in 2016 with an even better show to delight regional audiences. Spearheaded by Adelaide-based musicians Todd Sibbin, Tom West and Ryan Martin John, the band will tour South Australia with a more expansive set, delivering the same high energy performance that won over crowds in 2015. August’s encore performance earned a 4.5 star review, with the show described as “remaining faithful while skirting outright imitation, [the performance] captured the spirit of the songs’ originator, mixing skill and musicality with a loose feel and heartfelt execution.” Returning to the Gov in the state’s capital during the Adelaide Fringe 2016, the band is excited to also bring their energetic performance to new audiences in the regions.

This Chinese fable has been adapted by Chinese director Shi-Zheng, who has formed a bridge between his culture and Western artistic approaches to create a work that will appeal to both new and existing audiences. Reels is a regional not-for-profit film society run by volunteers who are keen to share the magic of cinema.

WHAT’S ON IN 2016

Since August 2008, Reels has brought arthouse Australian and international films to Mount Gambier and the Limestone Coast.

A Spanish Affair aka “Ocho Apellidos Vascos” 2014 (Spain) Romantic Comedy

In 2015, with the support of Country Arts SA, Reels moved to the Sir Robert Helpmann Theatre where the society’s members continue to enjoy exposure to a wide range of film genres and award winning cinema from all over the world. One of the society’s hallmarks is the camaraderie that exists amongst members who gather each month to socialise with fellow film aficionados over pre-screening nibbles and drinks. Many meet afterwards at nearby cafes and bars to rate and review the monthly movie and unwind. Wherever possible, Reels seeks out short films made by South Australian filmmakers to accompany the monthly feature. The society is a member of the Federation of Victorian Film Societies whose patron is the internationally recognised film critic, David Stratton.

EMINENCAL Portraits by Ron Penrose

MICHAEL BRYANT The Space In Between

30 January - 28 February Opening: 29 January, 6pm

5 March - 10 April Opening: 4 March, 6pm Opening Speaker: Lucia Pichler

The selected works for this exhibition all stem from the artist’s deep interest in portraiture and its validity in sourcing the truth of his subjects. Penrose’s passion for oil paint and the particular manner in which he applies it to the support is fundamental to his practice. He strategically manipulates colour and texture to capture the personalities of those who sit for him. “I feel planned understatement can create a sense of mystery to what is predominantly self-evident imagery. Under finish can be a legitimate mechanism in attracting viewer interest,” said Ron. Ron is offering a workshop during the exhibition with times and dates to be announced. — THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF DR MAYHEM AND THE CHONGA BARZ Recent works by Matt Sheehy and Anthony Hamilton 30 January - 27 March Opening: 30 January, 4 - 6pm This exhibition by two Mount Gambier artists, Matt Sheehy (Doctor Mayhem) and Anthony Hamilton (The Chonga Barz), has been curated by Gina Raisin who hopes to bring their work to the attention of a wider audience of community members and art lovers. Matt creates finely detailed universes by introducing new worlds and characters. Anthony uses multimedia and aerosol to invent crazy visions of life as he sees it, quite often with a comical twist.

Michael Bryant’s strong personal style and technique have been honed over many years of concentrated painting. The works and their content would be best described as contemporary figurative. Bryant’s paintings identify with the random world around us, drawing from nature and popular culture. His main source of inspiration comes from found images which are recycled through the process of random association, adaption and reconstruction. Bryant aims to create paintings that remain ambiguous not necessarily resolvable offering the opportunity for reflection and interpretation by the viewer. — MAX & OLIVE From the National Gallery of Australia The photographic life of Max Dupain and Olive Cotton 19 March - 8 May Opening: 18 March, 6pm Max and Olive is the story of two of Australia’s most significant photographers, during a key period in Australian history – the period leading up to, during and immediately after the Second World War. Dupain and Cotton shared a long and close personal and professional relationship and produced some of the defining images in Australian photography.

The expeditions, known as The Black Journey (Africa) and The Yellow Journey (Asia) traversed sparsely populated territories and wild terrains. The expeditions were covered extensively by the international press and sponsored by National Geographic. Both expeditions were made up of teams of well-respected and multi-skilled experts, with Iacovleff, the official artist and ethnographer on both. Lacovleff had an unquenchable appetite for travel and was able to work under difficult circumstances and his drawings and paintings helped to make the journeys even more famous and successful than they already were.

ARTS AND MENTAL HEALTH RESILIENCE FORUM WHEN May 2016

WHERE Adelaide

REGISTER YOUR INTEREST merilyn.denys@countryarts.org.au

The intersection between arts and health is playing a growing role in the area of health and wellbeing. As the discussion grows and the benefits of this area of practice are documented, focus is now being shifted to how practitioners from both the health and arts sides of the conversation deliver their business. Artists are showing health practitioners new ways of engaging with their clients, creating more positive health outcomes, but also generating creative new ways of delivering health messages and practices. Working with the Institute for Creative Health and the South Australian Arts and Health Leadership group to develop the program for this one-day forum will ensure we find the leading edge of the conversation in a South Australian context.

Service providers, health workers, local government staff and artists will come together to explore ways of working together to expand the pool of people able to contribute to the wellbeing of their communities through embedded arts programs. Keynotes and panel discussions will bring context to participatory activities and demonstrations which will enable participants to experience first-hand the kinds of activities they could employ in their work. Held in Adelaide, the forum will offer a second day workshop option designed for artists and mental health workers. If you would like to be added to the mailing list to receive information as details of the forum are finalised please email: merilyn.denys@countryarts.org.au.

THIS IS A BORDER(TOWN) WHEN February - December 2016

WHERE Tatiara

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Malcolm McKinnon, James Dodd and Mark de Nys

In this increasingly globalised world we are confronted daily with continual reappraisals and reassessments of the physical and psychological borders we as humans have to manage. More and more frequently borders of national, political and economic significance are being redrawn and redefined with little to no understanding of how they might and/or are affecting the individual. We use borders to define our personal space such as bricks and mortar for our shelters. Our passports reveal the very borders of our own identities disclosing our age, nationality, gender and incidentally which country’s borders we ourselves have crossed. What sort of self-discipline will be required to survive a borderless / globalised society? And what psychological borders will we choose to build in order to live in this seemingly ever increasingly chaotic, challenging and complex world?

Taking these provocations as a starting point Country Arts SA will curate a 12 month program within the Tatiara with a focus on Bordertown, which sits 18kms from the South Australian / Victorian state border. The projects included in This Is A Border (Town) will venerate the human in what sometimes seems to be an inhumane world and through another limited edition publication like our This is A River magazine these stories will be compiled alongside writings and thoughts from local residents and national experts.

CONNECT A NEW PROGRAM FOR CURIOUS MINDS

CONNECT Have you ever wondered how comedians come up with their jokes? How many hours an opera singer spends preparing their vocal cords? Or how a curator selects works for an exhibition? This is your chance to join the conversation with some of Australia’s top arts practitioners & find out more about how their art comes together. In 2016, we’re launching a new program called Connect. This is your opportunity to connect with the people who make the art happen and get behind the scenes at your local theatre.

Connect is a new program for curious audiences; and people who like to get more out of their theatre experience. Invite a friend along or come alone and meet likeminded people who want to experience a deeper connection with the arts.

Turandot on Sydney Harbour Join a special guest from State Opera of South Australia and be introduced to Puccini’s Turandot. Find out about what goes on behind the scenes long before the curtain goes up.
