COUNTRY ARTS SA GUIDE
2016 WELCOME TO A YEAR OF GREAT ART Artwork detail by Pungkai. Nyapari Ngura Wiru, 2012, synthetic polymer paint on canvas, 180 x 279 cm
ART WEAVES ITS WAY THROUGH ANY COMMUNITY, SMALL OR LARGE, BINDING IT TOGETHER AND KEEPING IT STRONG. Art is important in shaping the identity and culture of a region and letting it thrive. At Country Arts SA we want to bring the arts to life here in the Mid North and Yorke, not just for those who live in Port Pirie, but also those further away. That’s why we’ve put together this handy resource containing all the information you need about what’s going on in your region throughout the year, from theatre performances, visual arts, local work and cinema screenings to funding opportunities and workshops for artists. We trust there’ll be something to engage and inspire every member of the family in this guide, and hope you will join us in celebrating the arts in your community. 2016 also marks the 19th year SA Power Networks has supported us in bringing the best in Australian and international performing arts to audiences across South Australia. Thanks to SA Power Networks, our Principle Corporate Partner, we’re in for a great year. Steve Saffell CEO, Country Arts SA
Jack Snelling MP Minister for the Arts –
Rob Stobbe CEO, SA Power Networks –
When challenged by cultural and economic boundaries, particularly those compounded by distance, the most interesting success stories are often in the arts.
SA Power Networks is proud to partner with Country Arts SA in its mission to bring the best of the arts to people right around South Australia.
The arts help us make sense of the world around us by broadening our understanding of it. It not only connect us to our past experiences, but also to worlds so far removed from our own we may not have imagined them possible.
In 2016 we are partnering for the 19th successive year with Country Arts SA. Over this time, people in every corner of the State have been entertained and inspired by the productions Country Arts SA has brought to their doorstep.
Wherever you live in South Australia, we want you to have access to the worlds and experiences the arts provide.
As SA Power Networks continues our task of safely distributing power to about 850,000 customers across South Australia, we’re pleased to also help deliver quality arts events right around the state too.
Whether you attend a production or workshop, receive support or funding, take in a visual arts exhibition or a cinema screening, you’ll be experiencing some of what Country Arts SA has on offer for your region. The organisation is committed to delivering high quality arts to regional and rural parts of the state so you don’t have to travel so far. While Country Arts SA connects you to other worlds, it can also help connect you to your neighbours just down the street and to likeminded people all over your region, through a medium that knocks down the divides and brings communities closer together. So join your community and your local Country Arts SA staff for a year of great art in 2016!
Congratulations to Country Arts SA on another terrific program – here’s to a great year of art in 2016!

It’s the first day of school for Broer & Zus – recent immigrants from a ‘faraway’ place to Australia. The day starts off feeling like the end of the world, but through song, dance, comedy, circus and a day-dream sequence, they overcome their fears. BASED ON THE MUCH-LOVED PICTURE BOOK CHARACTER CREATED BY TED PRIOR Following sold out seasons across the world (including Broadway in New York), our amiable little megastar returns home for a strictly limited season. Grug began his life as the top of a Burrawang tree that fell to the ground. Resembling a small, striped haystack with feet and a nose, Grug is fascinated by the world around him and solves everyday problems creatively and without fuss. When dancing instructions are too difficult to understand, he invents his own dance and calls it “The Grug”. When snails eat his cabbages, Grug plants more cabbages so there will be enough for both him and the snails. Ted Prior’s hugely popular character (with over 110,000 Facebook fans!) is brought to life in this magical stage production for our very young theatre lovers.

Meet Lee and Maz. Best mates, invulnerable. Both young and beautiful, tanned and strong. It’s summer, their last year of school and they are ready to have the time of their lives. One fateful night they are driving on the highway, drunk and high. Life shatters and only one is left to pick up the pieces. That’s where Lola comes in. She looks exactly like Maz, which makes sense; she’s his sister. His twin sister. In the face of tragedy she’s looking for answers. A theatrical thrillseeker ride, Gorgon looks at the tricky dividing line between friendship and love, anger and grief. With a perceptive and sympathetic ear, it charts one of the most difficult moments of transition in life, from late adolescence to adulthood. Part nightmare, part time capsule, part gift. A surreal physical poem. Combining dance theatre company KAGE’s signature style of dance and humour, Marieke Hardy’s witty script and electronic music by Alisdair Macindoe, Picnic is a new solo dance theatre work by KAGE Creative Director Gerard Van Dyck.
Picnic uses the great Australian tradition of picnicking as an analogy for happiness and addresses themes of isolation, innocence and creativity. Gerard is both dancer and storyteller in this intelligent, cross-disciplinary and highly accessible work. Picnic combines whimsical anecdotes with nuanced and athletic choreography to present an absurd meditation on the importance of creativity.

You can’t say ‘no’ to the people you love - or the mob. In Francis Ford Coppola’s 1975 ground-breaking film The Godfather, the head of a prize horse is savagely cut off and placed in the bed of a hotshot Hollywood film director for the refusal of a favour... ever thought about the two guys that had to put it there? From award-winning playwright Damon Lockwood comes a whip-cracking tale of two men (The Fonzie Brothers) given this viciously gruesome task to ensure their future with the mob. The play has had sold-out seasons in Perth (nominated for the Western Australian Equity Guild Award for Best Play), Melbourne, New York and Italy, winning the 2012 Rome International Fringe Festival along the way. It is dark and funny and very much a tribute to the astounding Godfather Trilogy… but don’t worry if you’ve never seen any of the films (what have you been doing?!) – the play stands by itself.

Beautiful, insightful and surprising, Life is Short and Long brings to life a multitude of characters and stories told from the point of view of a traveller who discovers unexpected turns of life for herself along the way. Performance-maker Emma Beech visited Wirrabara in the winter of 2013. What she found was lots of greatness in a town almost forgotten. Emma turns a bitter-sweet catalogue of human resilience in the seemingly disparate locations of Barcelona in Spain, Wirrabara in South Australia’s mid north, and Port Adelaide, into a magical, witty and occasionally utopian meditation on human nature.
Life is Short and Long is a performance installation created from Emma’s three years of travel yarns and investigations into how people respond to crisis and change.

August’s encore performance earned a 4.5 star review, with the show described as “remaining faithful while skirting outright imitation, [the performance] captured the spirit of the songs’ originator, mixing skill and musicality with a loose feel and heartfelt execution.” Returning to the Gov in the state’s capital during the Adelaide Fringe 2016, the band is excited to also bring their energetic performance to new audiences in the regions.

In 2016, Puccini’s final opera comes to you direct from a pop up opera house overlooking Sydney’s famous landmarks at the water’s edge. When the heroic top notes of Nessun Dorma ring out, the soul stirs - it’s impossible to resist the climax of an exotic adventure captured perfectly in music. This Chinese fable has been adapted by Chinese director Shi-Zheng, who has formed a bridge between his culture and Western artistic approaches to create a work that will appeal to both new and existing audiences.

ARTS AND MENTAL HEALTH RESILIENCE FORUM WHEN May 2016
WHERE Adelaide
REGISTER YOUR INTEREST merilyn.denys@countryarts.org.au
The intersection between arts and health is playing a growing role in the area of health and wellbeing. As the discussion grows and the benefits of this area of practice are documented, focus is now being shifted to how practitioners from both the health and arts sides of the conversation deliver their business. Artists are showing health practitioners new ways of engaging with their clients, creating more positive health outcomes, but also generating creative new ways of delivering health messages and practices. Working with the Institute for Creative Health and the South Australian Arts and Health Leadership group to develop the program for this one-day forum will ensure we find the leading edge of the conversation in a South Australian context.
Service providers, health workers, local government staff and artists will come together to explore ways of working together to expand the pool of people able to contribute to the wellbeing of their communities through embedded arts programs. Keynotes and panel discussions will bring context to participatory activities and demonstrations which will enable participants to experience first-hand the kinds of activities they could employ in their work. Held in Adelaide, the forum will offer a second day workshop option designed for artists and mental health workers. If you would like to be added to the mailing list to receive information as details of the forum are finalised please email: merilyn.denys@countryarts.org.au.
