reconciliation action plan

Reconciliation is a priority for our organisation and inclusive of all the work we do. We recognise and respect that we are living and creating on Aboriginal Lands in South Australia and we are committed to working together to honour the living cultures of First Nations peoples. We aim to increase respect, understanding and equality of opportunity between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and the wider communities in which we work through partnership, dialogue and action. We believe the arts have an important role to play in reconciliation. By promoting the culture of First Nations peoples through our touring productions, exhibitions and cultural development activities, we strive to increase understanding and knowledge within the wider community. Through a program of education and cultural sharing activity for staff we will increase awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture in our organisation and enable our staff to share that knowledge with the wider community.

get involved! Reconciliation Week 27 May – 3 June 2015 National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements and to explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation effort. www.reconciliation.org.au/nrw

NAIDOC Week 5 – 11 July 2015 NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. www.naidoc.org.au

Outlaw, larrikin, national icon. Meet the man behind the legend. Kelly is a daring new stage production revealing the intimate details of Ned Kelly’s last night alive. Ned Kelly sits in his prison cell. Tomorrow he is going to be hanged. But his final night in prison is interrupted by the arrival of his brother Dan, disguised as a priest. Supposedly killed at the siege of Glenrowan, Dan is intent on moving north to Queensland and forgetting his past. To do so, he needs Ned’s blessing and forgiveness. But the last time they saw each other, Dan tried to shoot Ned dead. So begins a brutal brotherly confrontation. Facing sins of their past, each blames the other for his downfall. And neither escapes unharmed. History tells us that Dan and Ned never saw eye to eye and there is also myth that Dan escaped the fire and disappeared to Queensland. This makes for a brilliantly charged premise, explored beautifully on stage, weaving Kelly fact, theory and myth while exploring masculinity, brotherhood and the dangerous dynamic of mateship.

Nobody’s looking back at me. I’m in the underworld, now. Brought up on the wrong side of the tracks with an unrelenting limp, Chloe has had to develop a vicious outershell to shield against daily bullying. Moving to a new town in the middle of nowhere hasn’t made things easier. Chloe has bleak hopes for her future until she meets ‘Odd Boy’ Chris, the painfully unpopular son of her new English teacher. An intense bond is forged and the two outsiders begin to see the glimmer of new possibilities amidst their small town underworld. Evoking the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, Vivienne Walshe’s This is Where We Live is packed with vivid poetic language that is brimming with as much life and energy as its characters. This is an exceptional piece of exciting new Australian writing.

True stories from the men who flew in World War Two Based on his two best-selling books, Flak and Fly, Michael Veitch presents Flak, in which he takes on the roles of former airmen, recounting their extraordinary, true and largely untold stories of combat in the air war of 1939-45. Veitch’s passion has always been the air war, and over the course of three years and two books he interviewed more than 50 pilots, bomb aimers and air gunners, almost all of whom had never revealed their wartime adventures to anyone, including, in some cases, their own families. The stories they told are truly amazing. Veitch has an academic background in history, but made his name with ABC’s cult hit The D Generation, followed by Fast Forward, Full Frontal and more. Spend the night with the definitive seductress of the stage as she weaves her deliciously wicked wiles through one of Expressions Dance Company’s most loved productions. Performed to Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin’s gripping Carmen Suite by six EDC dancers, this iconic tale of Spanish heat and gypsy passion unravels when naïve soldier Don José has his heart ignited by the fiery Carmen. José’s attempts to tame the freedom-loving beauty are futile, and when she leaves him for the famous matador Escamillo, all three are engulfed in the flames of jealousy and revenge in this contemporary adaptation of ballet. Produced by Expressions Dance Company and Queensland Performing Arts Centre, Natalie Weir’s Carmen Sweet is a free spirit; dangerous, volatile and vulnerable, brought to vivid life by three dancers playing her different states of mind and alter egos.

THIS IS A RIVER TEN ARTIST RESIDENCIES ALONG THE MURRAY RIVER

2015 Projects

In 2015 Country Arts SA will place 10 artists in seven small communities and townships that hug South Australia’s 500 kilometre stretch of the Murray River.

Mike Tye: Raukkan

For their residencies, artists will explore the idea of “same place, different view” through the theme of Resilience as Process. The theme has a direct reference to the effects of the recent drought on River Murray towns and populations. Resilience is not a trait you either have or not; it is the process and outcome of adapting to challenging experiences. Country Arts SA is interested in understanding the communities’ processes of learning from the past, how they might share these through the creative and artistic lens of an artist in residence and preparing themselves for the next challenge. We are at an opportune time to discuss this as the waters have returned… to an extent… but what does it take for us not to forget?
