Nutrition Corner Happy Spring! If Spring cleaning is part of your regular routine this time of year, how about including a makeover for the fridge and/or the pantry? Try switching your breakfast cereals that are high in sugar for fibre rich oatmeal or your white pasta for whole wheat or even quinoa. Clean out the fridge and remove anything that may have expired and make a plan to fill up those fruit and veggie drawers. It is often said that in season produce contains the most nutrients…good time to start stocking up! J Try replacing those cupboard snacks that are high in salt with raw nuts and seeds. Almonds, walnuts, pistachios, pecans, cashews and brazil nuts are a good source of protein, healthy fats, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Add them to salads, enjoy them as a snack or turn them into homemade nut butter or nut milk! A palmful a day makes for the perfect mid-morning or mid-afternoon pick me up. Strawberries, blueberries and cherries will be plentiful very soon. Strawberries are a great source of fibre and vitamin C and they make for a great dessert...dipped in a little homemade dark chocolate! Blueberries are a good source of vitamin C, manganese and fibre. Cherries are high in fiber and potassium. Any of these berries are also a great source of antioxidants. Add them to salads, oatmeal, yogurt or smoothies… or just a bowl of them on their own for a sweet, nutritious dessert. Asparagus will surely be an addition to most grocery carts this time of year. Again, high in fibre and a good source of iron, vitamin C and some of the B vitamins. Try them steamed, grilled, sautéed or even as a raw, crunchy snack. Make some time for a kitchen spring cleaning this year. Replace processed foods with whole, minimally processed foods and give your body a boost into spring! -Erin Bosdet, Nutrition Advisor
