Nutrition Corner Eating a healthy well-balanced diet can contribute to maintaining electrolyte levels in the body. What are electrolytes you ask? Electrolytes are electrically charged substances found in your body and help keep a healthy balance within. Consuming foods and liquids that contain electrolytes will help to avoid an imbalance. We all know that water is the best fluid to keep ourselves hydrated and also for regulating body temperature, but water itself does not contain electrolytes. As we sweat, we release electrolytes. Consuming water with electrolytes while you exercise will assist in replacing those lost when you sweat. Sports drinks may be a regular addition to your grocery list if you play sports, work out in the gym or just keep active. Unfortunately, many sports drinks will contain a high amount of sugar. Coconut water may be a good source of electrolytes or you can try making your own electrolyte water to give your body the nutrients it needs while avoiding the added sugar. There are many recipes for electrolyte water that can easily be found on the internet. Vega is one brand on our shelves that offers an electrolyte hydrator that is not only alkaline forming, free from sugar and artificial sweeteners‌they also taste pretty good. There are several types of electrolytes, including magnesium, potassium, calcium and sodium. Eating a healthy, well balanced diet will help to maintain your electrolyte levels. Plant based foods, such as fruits and vegetables are said to be a good source of electrolytes. Nuts and beans are a good source of magnesium. Fruits and vegetables, such as bananas and avocados are a good source of potassium. We’ve all heard that calcium is good for our bones and teeth, but it is also the most abundant mineral in your body. Dark leafy greens and sesame seeds offer a good amount of this mineral. If you have not yet tried Himalayan salt, try adding a small pinch to your popcorn. Keep hydrated and please email Erin at nutrition@countrygrocer.com if you have any questions.
