Nutrition Corner On a daily basis I'm asked what sweeteners are the best to use and which are the best to avoid. I believe that avoiding sugar as often as possible is a good thing. Sugar can be a tough habit to kick and experts say that consuming sugar in excess on a regular basis is known to weaken the immune system, cause inflammation in the body, increase body weight and increase your risk of other serious diseases. If the average person were to consume five hundred calories of added sugar on a daily basis, that would be equal to one pound of body weight per week. If you are making an effort to cut down on sugar or remove it completely from your diet, you may be familiar with other low calorie sweeteners but keep in mind that many of them are artificial. While replacing one sweetener with another isn't necessarily the best way to get rid of your 'sugar' habit, stevia is considered to be a natural, zero calorie sweetener that is derived from the stevia plant. Stevia is a green, leafy plant native to South America. This sweetener has become quite popular over the past few years and you may notice it listed as an ingredient on of a number of items in our nutrition department, such as flavoured protein powders, energy bars, hydrators and other beverages. Stevia tends to be much sweeter than sugar, in fact, it is said to be one hundred to two hundred times sweeter than regular, white sugar. Not only is stevia thought to be a healthier option than sugar, it is also said that part of the stevia plant has been used medicinally for many years. If you have considered using stevia in your coffee or in your baking you will want to start with smaller quantities rather than replacing it teaspoon for teaspoon. Of course, everything in moderation...removing all of your sugar and replacing it with excess amounts of stevia might not be the best choice. Do your research to determine if stevia is the right choice for you. Please email Erin if you have any questions: nutrition@countrygrocer.com
