Nutrition Corner With all of the recent additions to our nutrition department, there are bound to be a few items that you haven’t yet tried, or maybe even heard of. Maca root comes from Peru and will look very similar to a turnip in shape and comes in several colours. Maca is often referred to as a ‘superfood’ as it is a good source of minerals and antioxidants. It is said that regular use of maca may increase energy, improve memory, strengthen the immune system, balance hormones, assist with hot flashes and it may possibly have a positive effect on the adrenal glands. Some experts recommend using one teaspoon of maca per day for approximately three weeks out of every month and then taking one week or so off. You can find maca in capsules, tablets, liquid and powder. Gelatinized powder is likely the most common and is said to be the best choice because it blends well with liquids and there are possibly more nutrients than in the processed forms. Maca powder can be mixed in with smoothies, oatmeal, raw desserts or even baking. Here’s one of my favorite maca beverages: Into your blender… ● 2 tbsp of raw almonds ● 1 tbsp of cacao powder ● 1 tsp of maca powder ● 4 dates ● a pinch (or a drizzle) of vanilla ● 1 cup of water Blend until smooth and enjoy!
