Nutrition Corner Adding fresh herbs to your meals will not only add great flavor and spice up your dish, it may also add some health benefits. Rosemary, oregano, parsley, dill, basil, mint and thyme are just a few options you have when it comes to edible, fragrant bouquets. It’s a great time of year to purchase herb plants and plant them in your garden or just keep them on your window sill through summer. Dried spices will add the same flavor to dishes, but fresh herbs will likely have a more impressive nutritional profile as they contain vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Rosemary can be a good source of vitamin A and research has shown that rosemary may assist with healthy digestion. Add it to vegetable dishes for a burst of flavour. Oregano is high in antioxidants and is said to be a good source of Nutrition Advisor Erin Bosdet minerals such as manganese and iron. Dill contains a variety of nutrients but like most plants, it will lose many of its nutrients if overcooked. Try adding fresh dill to yogurt for a great dip or sprinkle it over top of freshly baked salmon. Parsley is a great addition to just about any dish, including green smoothies! Parsley is a great source of vitamins, including vitamin K and minerals, including iron. Aside from the nutrients that basil packs, it is one of the most popular herbs that can add tremendous flavor to any dish. Basil contains anti-inflammatory properties and may be useful in promoting good digestion. Mint comes in many varieties and can be used in sweet and savoury dishes. It is a great herb to make tea (hot or cold) to help ease upset stomachs. Thyme is actually part of the mint family and is one of the most versatile herbs for cooking. Try adding fresh herbs to your meals, not only for added flavor, but for added nutrients.
