Anniversaries– 5 years!

Congratulations to Josh Steffler, bakery clerk in our Esquimalt store celebrates 5 years with us!

Nutrition Corner The over-eating season is upon us, and with it comes post-mealtime sleepiness, gas, bloating, cramping, heartburn, acid reflux, and general digestive disorder & discomfort associated with food sensitivities & over-eating. Digestive enzymes are a great way to reduce these symptoms as well as the symptoms of other health issues associated with deficient digestive enzymes in the gut that may include obesity, arthritis, depression, allergies, autoimmune disease, eczema, acne, and chronic fatigue, to name just a few. This variety of illness can spring from chronic malabsorption of nutrients due to a lack of enzymatic support. If your body doesn't have the basic nutritional building blocks it needs, your health and ability to recover from illness will be compromised. There are several things you can do to restore and maintain a healthy gut flora, aside from adding a digestive enzyme to your meal plan: ● Chew your food thoroughly, and avoid drinking large quantities of liquids just before or with your meals. ● Chewing and saliva production cues the stomach to excrete enzymes. This readies the stomach for the food that is headed its way. ● Eat more raw foods and fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, kombucha and sauerkraut. ● Take a probiotic supplement. ● Take an omega 3 supplement (fish or flax oil) to ease inflammation. ● Get rid of yeast, parasites or bacteria overgrowth that may be lurking in your gut. There are detox kits and other supplements to support this. ● Take the steps needed to manage the stress in your life. Exercise, sleep, massage and stress support supplements will help. According to enzyme pioneer, Dr. Howell, “When your gut is healthy, your immune system works well. When your immune system works well, so do you. Giving your body digestive enzymes to help aid digestion is like hiring more workers for an extremely large task. The more workers you have, the better executed the task will be. Digestive enzymes are the key substances of the digestive process, working to break down our food for proper absorption.” (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/08/21/enzymes-specialreport.aspx) Next time you are in the store, ask the Nutrition Advisor for more information on available digestive enzyme products to assist you in attaining and maintaining healthy digestion!
