Nutrition Corner Welcome Penelope from our Cobble Hill store who will now be writing our Nutrition Corner!! If you’d like to reach her, email cobnutrition@countrygrocer.com. Cold & flu season is here, and with it comes Echinacea! Also known as the Purple Cone Flower, this flowering herb has several species and belongs to the daisy family, Asteraceae. The generic name is derived from the Greek word echino, meaning "sea urchin," due to the spiny central disk of the flowering plant. The leaves, flower and root are used to make herbal preparations that can reduce the symptoms of cold & flu, and treat the symptoms of a variety of other infections. With the cooler weather and kids back in school, the incidence of cold & flu tends to increase at this time of year. Echinacea products are popular with those looking to treat symptoms naturally. Commercially available Echinacea products come in many forms, including tablets, drinks, tinctures, throat sprays, lozenges and tea. Preparations for children are also available. As with most herbals, pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid taking Echinacea. Echinacea seems to activate chemicals in the body that decrease inflammation, which may in turn reduce cold and flu symptoms. Laboratory research suggests that Echinacea can stimulate the body’s immune system, and also seems to contain some chemicals that can attack yeast and other kinds of fungi directly (www.webmd.com/vitaminssupplements). Gaining popularity since the 1980s, it has become the largest selling herbal preparation worldwide. To learn more about Echinacea, available products and their benefits, talk with your Country Grocer Nutrition Advisor next time you are in the store. Have a happy, healthy autumn!
