SUMMER 2010

FROM THE EDITOR: its world-class concert venues to the local F rom artists and the neighborhood bars they play, Chicago is truly country music’s “second city.” Over the last several years, major touring country acts like Kenny Chesney, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood have reached record-breaking feats when their tours stopped in Chicago. Why is country music so successful in Chicago? Most importantly, it’s the fans. Chicago’s country music fan base is extremely dedicated to the artists and the venues they play. Some would say it’s the outlets that allow fans to connect with their favorite artists. In Chicago, some of these outlets include the critically acclaimed concert venue, Joe’s Bar; the largest country radio station, US99 and one heck of an online country music community led by CountryMusicChicago. com. The sum of these parts equals “sweet-home” Chicago for the country music industry. Looking at this sumLuke Bryan at Joe’s Bar - courtsey mer’s country music concert lineup, the success will continue in 2010 for both the artists and the fans. From the lakefront concerts to suburban county fairs, newcomers and diehards fans alike will converge on some of the hottest ticket shows in town. While it’s extremely impossible to come up with the top concert list, later on in this guide we’ll look at some of Chicagoland’s top “hot 15” country music concerts of the summer. See you in the crowd,

In the country music world, the state of Wisconsin is known for more than just its cold beer and fine cheese. A n n u a l l y, from early June to late August, our friends to the north pack plenty of brews and bust out all-weekend-long the mega country fests. For those who tote an Illinois driver’s license, don’t fret. With a few fun-tips and this handy guide, Illinoisans can learn how to play incognito to avoid looking like a sausage (err. Bratwurst).

Survival Guide to Wisconsin Summer Country Festivals

Depending on how far fans are willing to travel, there are several ways strategically make summer plans. Most of the festivals are a week apart therefore; proper planning can maximize the “superfan” experience. In June, Country USA kicks off in Oshkosh on June 22 while Country Fest fires up in Cadott on June 24.

The annual CMA Fest, now in its 49th year, features three days of performances, family events and the coveted Fan Fair autograph session. In the past, country music greats such as Reba McEntire, LeAnn Rimes and Taylor Swift have participated in the star-studded exposition. The Ryman Auditorium 116 Fifth Avenue North, Nashville ryman.com Just north of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum sits another piece of historic Nashville real estate. The Ryman Auditorium, often referred to as the Church of Country Music, has been the host of some of the biggest names in music over the years and was even the home the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Even today, with acts like Lady Antebellum and Bake Shelton, the Ryman still serves as a downtown concert and event venue. Self-guided tours of the facility are available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Lodging Union Station Hotel 1001 Broadway, Nashville unionstationhotel.com The Wyndham Union Station Hotel located on upper Broadway, just a few blocks from the downtown entertainment district. As the name suggests, the building, once served as Nashville’s main train station. Today, it’s one of Nashville’s premier hotels and in the guest rooms; visitors would never guess the building was over 100 years old.

Entertainment District & Broadway Ave. visitmusiccity.com Along Broadway Ave, visitors will find souvenir, leather goods, music shops and bars down “the strip”. By day, the streets are busy with tourists and shoppers and by night, the co-mingled honky tonks are playin’ it live and loud. While it would be easy to spend several hours walking along the strip, there are a few must-stop shops along the way. Ernest Tubb Record Shop 417 Broadway, Nashville ernesttubb.com As most record shops across the U.S. have gone to the wayside, Ernest Tubb’s is still alive and very vibrant. They also have a second location in the Opryland area. Ask for a mail order catalog! Dolly Parton’s Trinkets & Treasures 125 2nd Ave, Nashville dollypartonmusic.net One of the newest downtown attractions, and quite possibly one of the most colorful, is Dolly Parton’s signature shop. Officially opened in March 2010, the Dolly inspired shop features a mix of Dolly-centric items for fans of all ages, including a music selection stocked with Parton’s records. Nashtrash Tours Farmer’s Market - 900 Rosa Parks Blvd, Nashville nashtrash.com Several tour companies operate downtown sightseeing tours but only one tour-ticket comes

Like most downtown hotels, visitors should prepare for valet parking but guests typically do not need to leave much by car as many attractions are within walking distance.
