Smart Ways To Save On School Supplies

Teaching Kids To Be Good Sports

Back to school season can be as expensive for parents as it is exciting for students. Once the initial letdown of the end of summer vacation wears off, many kids are excited to return to school, where they can see their friends, study their favorite subjects and participate in extracurricular activities. Parents of school-aged youngsters may share in that excitement while also knowing that back to school season can stretch their budgets. One of the ways to salvage those budgets is to save on school supplies. Fortunately, there are several ways parents can do just that.

Good sportsmanship is about playing by the rules, discipline, respect, and self control. A good sport has fun because he or she enjoys playing the game more than the final outcome.

• BE PATIENT. Shopping early can save shoppers money in many instances, but parents may benefit by exercising patience when it comes to buying school supplies for their children. Teachers often give students lists of supplies they will need for each class, and parents who wait to receive such lists can avoid spending money on items their kids won’t need. Even if you wait it out, you may be able to get a head start, as some teachers may post supply lists on school websites, while others might email lists to parents before back to school season hits full swing.

Here are tips to set your kid on the path toward good sportsmanship. 1.

Explain what sportsmanship is — using kid-friendly terms. As with any behavior, the first step is to let your kids know what’s expected. Sportsmanship is an extension of the golden rule. It’s treating others the way you want to be treated.

Be a role model on the sidelines. As a spectator, your job is to be a force of positivity. Cheer on success, efforts and progress. Hand out high fives as if they were Halloween candy. Congratulate both teams on a game well played. Kids really do take the example of the coach and the parents.

Respect the coach‘s role. Well-meaning parents try to instruct from the sidelines — only to get in the way of the actual coach. Parents should allow a coach his or her time to instruct. Your eyes are probably trained only on your child, but the coach is looking out for the entire team.

• TAKE INVENTORY. If you have more than one child, chances are you already have lots of school supplies around the house. Dust off kids’ backpacks and study areas from last school year to determine which supplies you need to buy and which you already have. Going forward, encourage kids to store their supplies in a predetermined area once the school year ends, as this will make next year’s inventory that much easier to examine and assess.

Don‘t make it all about winning and losing. Sure, trophies are cool, but the focus should be on nontangibles like learning the game, figuring out how to interact with others and — especially — just having fun.

• SPEND MORE NOW TO SAVE LATER. While inexpensive supplies can be hard to resist, such items likely won’t withstand the test of time, forcing you to spend time and money each year buying replacement supplies. Paying more now for certain items, including stronger backpacks and more highly rated calculators, may end up saving you money in the long run, even if the initial pill is somewhat tough to swallow.

Celebrate success as a group. NFL players may do individual victory dances in the end zone after every touchdown, but that doesn’t mean your kid should too. Keep celebrations low-key and communal. Try ending practice and games with a group high five.

Accept loss gracefully. When your child’s team comes up short, encourage the team to congratulate the opponents for a game well played. “Some of the best lessons come from losing—not winning,” says Dan Doyle, the founder of National Sportsmanship Day. Kids need to understand you can’t always win, and that’s okay. You can always come back and try again.

• USE TECHNOLOGY TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. Department stores and businesses that sell school supplies, such as pharmacies and office stores, may or may not discount too many items once back to school season hits full swing. But savvy parents can still find deals by using technology to their advantage when shopping for school supplies. Download apps like RetailMeNot to your smartphone and enable its updates so your phone essentially notifies you of any discounts the moment you walk into a given store. If you don’t receive any updates, search for discounts via the app or the Internet as you shop. Chances are strong that there are deals to be had, even if you don’t learn of the deals until you arrive at the store.

Present consequences for poor sportsmanship. What happens when things get ugly on the field? “The best consequence is to take a kid out of a game,” says Doyle. Or, better yet, support the coach’s decision to do so. If you need to talk to your child about attitude, do so after things have cooled down a bit. Get down on his or her level. Start with encouragement, then a constructive conversation about attitude and the consequences of poor sportsmanship. Commit to having your child attend both practices and games. Life with kids is hectic no matter how you slice it, and as a result some parents allow kids to skip practice repeatedly. Not fair! Your child needs to understand how his or her absence affects the team. If you make a commitment to a team, you need to have the courtesy of being there.
