Ask the Guys Dear Classified Guys, A few months ago when I bought my condo, my Dad's advice was invaluable. He saved me a lot of time, energy and money. Now that the process is over, it's time for me to find a car to replace my ailing sedan. Once again, my Dad is there to help me shop the classified ads and pick the right one. However, there is one piece of advice that doesn't make sense to me. He says that when I go to look at a car, I should bring a large amount of money, like $600 to $800, to leave as a deposit. The cars are priced at about $6000 to $8000. I guess that's only about 10%, but with a new condo and mortgage payment, that seems like a lot of money to me. Can you guys tell me if that's too much to leave as a deposit or is my Dad's advice right on track again?

person to bring along with you. It's always advisable to have a second set of eyes when shopping for a used car. While you get to talk with the owner and inquire how he used the car, your dad could be looking over the vehicle in more detail. Carry: However, like you suspected, his deposit amounts seem awfully high. A deposit is usually given to a seller to show your intent to purchase and hold the car until you return with payment. Some sellers will simply take your word as intent if you plan on returning quickly. Others may ask you to leave a deposit amount. Cash: In any case, it's best to
leave as little as possible. Sometimes $20 to $100 is enough to show good faith on the deal until you can return with the remaining payment. That way, if anything ever happens and your deposit is not returned, your loss is minimal. Carry: Regardless of the deposit amount, be sure to document any transaction. Write out a receipt that shows how much you deposited and when you plan on returning for the car. Cash: And after your purchase, be sure to give your Dad a ride in your new vehicle. You never know when you may need his help again.

Children who eat a poor breakfast or lunch may give in to temptation. Offer healthier snacks such as nuts, dried fruit, or string cheese. Sneak some fiber in by offering a granola bar as a snack.
4. Don’t be afraid to offer a sweet treat. Instead of cookies or candy, offer low-fat yogurt. Buy the kind that comes in a squeezable tube. They can be frozen and will thaw to a creamy consistency by lunchtime. 5. If kids help select it or prepare it, they’re more likely to eat it. Give them some choices, but guide their decisions. Show them how to dip bite-sized veggies and fruits into their favorite dipping sauce. Let them shop the farmer’s market or the produce section to choose their favorites. Have them help make trail mix of nuts and dried fruit, then package them into single serving bags.

Make this the year you prioritize sleep for the whole family Parents, you can already picture those first mornings of the school year: the challenge of dragging cranky kids out of bed after weeks of mellow summer mornings. We swear we’ll do it differently this year. We will listen to the experts. Come August, we will adjust bedtimes back to a school-year schedule. We will dim the lights and draw the curtains in the evenings. We will remember the power of a good nighttime routine. It wounds wonderful. But each year, we pay for having ditched routines and being lenient about bedtime. Maybe we’ll really try to get them to bed early, but baseball games run late and trips to other time zones, and procrastination, and … Then we try to get kids up early for the first day of school. Their bodies naturally rebel. It’s never easy to be “waking up when you’re biologically ready to be asleep,” says Dr. Peter Franzen, child sleep expert at University of Pittsburgh’s Sleep Medicine Institute. Lack of sleep affects kids’ ability to learn, to remember, and to handle emotions he says. • Begin adjusting bedtime two weeks before school begins. Begin by moving bedtime back by about 10 to 15 minutes each night. “You don’t have to be really strict and jump into bed at 8 o’clock.” • The routine for young kids includes a warm bath and reading a favorite story. With older children, Dr. Franzen suggests a sit-down discussion about the importance of being rested during the first days of school. Plan a solid routine together, making sure they understand how much sleep is necessary. Children from toddlers to adolescents need 10 to
