with Award Alvaton School student Braden Ussery was honored last November at the meeting of the Warren County Board of Education for winning a “Yes I Can” Award from the Kentucky Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). Braden, who is severely vision-impaired, demonstrated how he uses technology provided by the school district to adapt and succeed. The “Yes I Can” Awards honor children and youth with exceptionalities who shine. CEC has recognized the accomplishments of thousands of students since the program started in 1982. McNeill Third Graders Share New Inventions The W.R. McNeill multi-purpose room was filled with new ideas and inventions at the 3rd Grade Invention Showcase held in March. Ideas ranging from multi-use art supplies, organization tools, accessories for health and wellness, cleaning and convenience items, new games and more were all on display as students presented their products.
Students Donate Hair to Cancer Patients Leadership Day at Alvaton included an unusual, real-life example of several of the Leader In Me habits as many students and teachers received haircuts in front of the entire school. As they explained, the participants started with Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind back when Ms. Rupsch’s 4th grade class and Ms. Borland’s 5th grade class were setting personal goals. Ms. Rupsch wanted to grow her hair longer throughout the school year so that she could donate it to Pantene Beautiful Locks in honor of a friend’s child who had undergone chemotherapy and needed a wig. Several young ladies from the primary grades also participated, and stylists from local salons volunteered to do the cuts free of charge.

South Warren High Sophomore Sarah Pemberton has been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Phenom Watch List. She is the only player in her district selected for the list. The AVCA Phenom List is for high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The athletes on the Phenom List have received some type of honor (All-State Team, USAV Training Teams, AVCA/Max Preps Players of the Week, etc.), identifying them as a top player in their region.

Two Warren County Public Schools high school seniors, Katie Losekamp of Greenwood and Evan Poff of South Warren, have earned National Merit Semifinalist honors from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Only 16,000 students nationwide were selected for this recognition. The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Losekamp, an Academic All-State performer in cross country and track & field, is an Advanced Placement Scholar who recorded a composite score of 33 on the ACT. A member of the National Honor Society at Greenwood, she has a grade point average of 3.96 and is currently taking three Advanced Placement classes. Poff has a perfect 4.0 unweighted GPA. Factoring in AP class performance, he has a weighted GPA of 4.26. President of the SWHS Beta Club and a member of the National Honor Society, Poff has had perfect attendance throughout middle school and high school. A member of the SWHS academic team and band, Poff also competes in track & field.
